JULY 25 – 26, 2017, RADISSON BLU HOTEL, Nairobi - Kenya
Compliance best practice for the pharma and medical devices industry. www.pharmacompliance.co.ke
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Compliance best practice for the pharma and medical devices industry. Compliance in the pharmaceutical industry is a critical issue, particularly in Kenya. Pharmaceutical companies across the globe face unparalleled challenges in the dynamically changing clinical, regulatory and business landscape. As regulatory scrutiny of the Pharmaceutical industry continues to intensify, compliance teams face increasingly complex challenges related to Legal Frameworks and Compliance, Effective Third Party Compliance Strategies, Best Practice Compliance Strategies, Internal Controls and Risk Management, Complexities of HCP interactions. The inaugural edition of the Kenya Pharmaceutical Regulatory Compliance Conference will provide a venue for industry experts, policymakers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and inventors to discuss and debate the challenges they face as well as explore new strategies. This event therefore gives

compliance and risk professionals an unparallel opportunity to interact with the leading minds in the industry about the current state of laws and technology and government oversight and more, as the event format which includes panel discussions, debates, workshops and exhibitions will also throw light on the direction
the industry will take in the future – making it all the more important for today’s Pharmaceutical professionals to actively take part in this conference. Apart from the Conference, corporate organizations and businesses in the different sectors of the pharmaceutical industry will also showcase their products and services to the delegates and stakeholders attending the conference. WHY THE CONFERENCE The Conference is organized by the Ministry of Health’s Pharmacy and Poisons Board and managed by Standout Ventures East Africa. The Pharmacy and Poisons Board is a key government agency that enforces regulations and laws in the pharmaceutical sector. In recent years, the Board has had to battle cases of malpractices in the industry, with certain incidents reported in the Kenyan media. What has emerged from review and audit done by the board is that there are obvious loopholes in the regulatory framework that may have been exploited by unscrupulous people at the expense of industry best practices and regulatory compliance. The audit also reveals an obvious need for greater industry cohesion and engagement among peers to ensure regulatory procedures are observed at all levels of practice. It has also emerged that the board has in the past lacked strong governmental regulatory enforcement mechanisms to weed out illegal business activities in the country. In many instances, the Board has successfully stopped reported cases of malpractices, but it is still overwhelmed by some cases of noncompliances.
Page 4
This is more than just a conference. It is fresh, innovative and genuinely engages the audience. However, this has only given the board the impetus to craft all possible strategic tools to combat noncompliance with regulations in the industry. This conference is a great step towards engaging the greater pharmaceutical stakeholder fraternity to help fight compliance vices and to encourage greater enforcement of the regulatory framework.
It emerges that lack of compliance breeds fertile ground for potential risks to the lives of the very people the industry is supposed to serve; the general population. In the absence of compliance, and in the occurrence of wanton contravention of regulation, the general population is placed on a precarious situation of danger from use of substandard medical equipment and treatment therapy.
This conference is a first step to ensuring the entire industry rallies around the need to overcome regulatory challenges together, as stakeholders seek common fronts and solutions through which to streamline regulatory practices in the sector. This is more than just a conference. It is fresh, innovative and genuinely engages the audience.
It is not in doubt that counterfeit drugs and medical supplies have found their way onto our pharmaceutical shelves, sometimes with the collusion of stakeholders – and at other times by the lack of proper screening and verification procedures and processes. Either way, the population will always be at risk if regulatory practices are not enhanced and tightened. This, perhaps, is one industry whose failures would reverberate beyond boardrooms and the walls of various pharmaceutical premises. If measures are not put in place to safeguard what is released to the market and the general population, the industry itself is at risk of damaged credibility and the heightening of tension in the public. A public that is worried and panicked by the quality of pharmaceutical services in the country could easily create a national crisis.
