SMOKE, HANDMADE GRAPHIC NOVEL. 2014. PAPER, PENS, CARDBOARD.

simply, this graphic novel illustrates a Rendezvous between a young male and female within the context of the city rome. imagery of the interaction between the couple is juxtaposed with religious statuous imagery. rome is both known as the catholic capital of the world and held as an exemplary city in terms of religious devotion, as well as a city of love, passion and sex. while this is an often unrecognized contradition, both religion and love function through passion. the narrative encompasses overwhelming sexuality and innduendos. whether the narrative is offputting in its brevity or explicit sexuality, its focus on sex could suggest the power of that above all

MY WORK THIS SEMESTER HAS BEEN PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON THE AESTHETICIZATION OF DITIAL OR ANALOG ERRORS, OR “GLITCHES.” GLITCH ART QUESTIONS THE FORM OF TRADITIONAL ART IN THAT ERROR BECOMES THE ELEMENT OF EXPRESSION. THROUGH ITS OSSILATION BETWEEN PURPOSE AND UNPREDICTABILITY, IT SENSITIVELY INDICATES DEATH, ABLITERATION, AND FATALISM OF INOPERANCY. GLITCH ART CAN BE PERCEIVED AS “CYBORG ART” BECAUSE OF ITS FOUNDATION ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN HUMANS AND COMPUTERS, AND THE ALTERING ROLE OF THE MACHINE AS THE MASTER OF VISION. MY EXPLORATION OF THESE IDEAS NATURALLY FOUND UNIFICATION WITH RELIGIOUS CONTENT, SPECIFICALLY ROMAN CATHOLIC, INSPIRED BY ENVIRONMENTAL CONTEXT IN CLASSICISM AND THE ANTIQUE .....

GLITCH GENESIS 1. I., VIDEO INSTALLATION, 2014. my exploration into the realm of glitch art was inspired simply by experiencing and witnessing glitches and issues in all my personal devices including my computer, my hard drive, my camera, cell phone, etc...while ultimately frustrating to experience glitches in life, i saw glitches as additionally fascinating and aesthetically captivating. my first piece developed around touristic photos i took of one of my favorite churches in rome, the archbasilica of st. john lateran. Architecturally grand and lavishly decorated, the church encompasses floor to ceiling niches holding colossal sculptures of apostles and religious figures. my fusion of religious imagery with the “Glitch” and modern electronic connotations such as Siri emerges as something initially personal, but also extends into the universal. “Glitch genesis 1. i.,” is a video installation that is projected onto a ceiling, pulling the energy of the room to the flashing of a succession of images forced to glitch through both my hand, and computer programming. siri’s voice finds the viewer in the ears of headphones, and speaks one of the most famous bible verses, but not without intermittent glitches ....

IN THE BEGINNING GOD CREATED THE HEAVENS AND

THE EARTH. 2

NOW THE EARTH WAS FORMLESS AND EMP-

TY, DARKNESS WAS OVER THE SURFACE OF THE DEEP, AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD WAS HOVERING OVER THE WATERS. 3

AND GOD SAID, “LET THERE BE LIGHT,” AND THERE WAS

LIGHT. 4

GOD SAW THAT THE LIGHT WAS GOOD, AND HE

SEPARATED THE LIGHT FROM THE DARKNESS. 5

GOD CALLED THE LIGHT “DAY,” AND THE DARKNESS

HE CALLED “NIGHT.” AND THERE WAS EVENING, AND THERE WAS MORNING- THE FIRST DAY...

SO GOD CREATED MANKIND IN HIS OWN IMAGE, IN THE IMAGE OF GOD HE CREATED THEM; MALE AND FEMALE

HE CREATED THEM.

An extension of “glitch genesis 1. I.,” occurs through digital prints digitally and deliberately manipulated by my hand, through a computer. while obliterating images of various religious figures, the glitch becomes the force of expression. its existence is simple, while also suggesting complexity. the presence of classicism, paired with indiscriminate glitches provides a quality of prepossession, and affixes to both historical and religious contexts

“Glitch artists resuscitate the casualties of image destruction as deliberate forms of communication. Despite the fragmentation of once cohesive image data, narrative can still exist, and meaning can begin to trace the familiar contours of shared ideals, imaginings and interpretations. Expression within glitch art is often self-referential, with the substance and story being that of the generative processes and serendipitous encounters that give error its form. There is, however, a gradual increase in the possibility for techniques and results that could give glitch art further cross-disciplinary importance.= .... .... .... .... .... Error naturally has the potential to become a powerful element of expression — and the glitch artist is equally capable of manipulating defect as a mode of conscious expression and submitting to the rather Zen-like qualities of accepting the purposelessness and serendipity that can be found in unpredictable errors.1
