Orange Orange glow in the horizon, sun rising, and I still haven’t slept. I just have so much to get off my chest. Thoughts heavy on my mind, do you mind if I take some time to vent? Would you look at me different? Would you look at me the same? As you turn the pages of this book and read about my moments of fame? My moments of shame? If love is a game, then I’m not a player, just a spectator sitting on the sideline waiting for it to be my time to shine but in the meantime why don’t you turn the page and take a look at the rest of my coloring book. 4

Black, Red, Yellow You asked me what my favorite color was, when we first met. In the middle of the desert, right before Ariana Grande’s set. I felt a conection between us, or was that just me? You said you studied chemistry, did you feel any with me? You were alone, and so was I. Us, two straight lines that intersected at this single point in time. From two different parts of the world, music brought us together, underneath this black night sky which brought us some much needed cool weather. With your aura burning red and a flower crown on your head. With my aura a mellow yellow wondering if we’ll ever meet again. 6

Peach Girl, you didn’t have to flex this hard in the middle of a quarantine. Got me sliding into your DM’s with heart eyes. If Corona doesn’t take you out then maybe can I? It’s too bad you’re just out of my reach but what’s a little distance to an adventurer like me. I’d fly down south to you maybe even meet you at Bonaroo. I could be your Anuel, you could be my Karol G. I could be your Big Apple, you can be my Georgia Peach.

Green I’m the child that survived the trail and tribulations of growing up, although it tried to entrap me, I didn’t fall for it’s tricks, truth is I didn’t become a man, I became a champ at chess. While everyone else is playing checkers, I chase adventure. I’m a collector of stories and memories that will last me forever. So catch me catching flights to Coachella until I run out of cheddar cheese. I want to be Young Forever Jay-Z. So I’m never growing up, I’m never becoming a “man.” I’m dressing up in all green, just call me Peter Pan.

Pink So Juicy, So Sweet! No one else can compete. Not orange, not yellow, especially not red! Yea that’s right, I said what I said! I eat you when I’m stressed I eat you when I’m blessed I eat you while watching netflix in bed. There are others in the world but to me you’ll always come first. My favorite girl, you make my heart burst. my delicious little pink starburst.

Baby Blue “What’s good Shawty? What it do?” ...no, no, thats not right. How about, “What’s the word baby boo?” nope, nope, even worse. Maybe if I go basic? “Hi, how are you?” nawww. Why is it so hard to be smooth. I just want to talk and get to know you. I got the messages open thinking, if we were shades of blue, you’d be a bold royal, and I’d be a shy baby blue.

Red If I hit your line, would you reply? If I offered to take you to a concert, would you deny? If I asked you out to dance, to Zona de Cuba, a couple of drinks, some Bad Bunny jams, would you give me chance to show you the type of guy that I am? But understand that I’m not very good at this but for you I’m willing to stand ten toes down. So if your down, we can go down to Govenors Island, spend the day and bike around, or go to Brooklyn Bridge Park and have a picnic with the New York City skyline in the background. Sounds of waves crashing into the pier. I fear rejection but I’m more afraid of regret. So tell me, if I hit your line, would you reply? or would you leave me on read. 16

Violet The night is finally here, The perfect night that I had planned. When you and I would finally meet, after we made the perfect match. We were chatting for a week, about tattoos and Sabrina Claudio. And then I finally asked you out to D&B, you replied, “Omg that sounds like so much fun. Lets go!” I showed up nice and early so you wouldn’t have to wait. 10...20...50mins pass by and you still hadn’t shown up. “she’s...she’s probably just running late.” You never showed up to the perfect night that I had planned. You left me there waiting, with these violets in my hands. 18

Black and Blue Rule number one of boxing: protect yourself at all times, never drop your guard. But it’s hard to change out of this state of mind when everytime you catch feelings you’re really just catching Cupid’s hands. I’ve gone twelve rounds with him but I just don’t understand how love works, so here I barely stand with a heart full of stiches and black and blues, concussed from all the chances that I blew, knocked out from all the disappointments I’ve went through.

and repair the damage that’s been done. I’m done, I’m done, I’m done! I shout in despiar as I drown under water, running out of air. State of Denial. Never one to give up, I swim a mile to the surface and give love another trail. I refuse to believe that cupid can beat me. so I switch up my style to something a little less hostile because

State of Emergency is what I declare as I take care of the wear and tear,

I just want to let my guard down and take off my gloves. I don’t want to fight anymore. I just want to love.

Amber What’s your favorite color? Is it orange? Is it red? Or is it a combo of the two like when the sun is about to set on the beach with the sand between your toes and the water so blue? Just give me a clue, a sign that says I’m not wasting your or my time staring into your autumn brown eyes over dinner drinking this burgundy wine with songs by Ginuwine as I get to know you better. What’s your astronomical sign? I’m a Gemini. Are you an Aquarius? A Cancer? Do you sing? Are you a dancer? Wait, what did you say your favorite color was? Because mine is Amber.

(Lessons)2

From “1 + 2 ≠ 3” A collection of Math poems by Sammy Marrero

I’ve been spending sometime inside the four walls of my mind redecorating of somekind. I’m moving around some furniture and opening up the blinds to let more sunlight into my mind. I’m trying to be more kind to myself and practice selfcare; do you mind if I share what I’ve learned during my time in this square? I’ve learned that one plus two does not always equal to three but one is enough as long I love me. I’ve learned that you can’t have wealth without mental health so I’m redocorating to be ricch like Roddy. During my time in this box I’ve refined my thoughts to leave behind the insecurities that have affected my grind. I’ve moved around some tables, I’ve moved around some chairs, I’ve opened up the windows to let in more fresh air. The most important lesson I’ve learned is that this proccess takes time but as long as you are aware of your needs and selfcare then you have nothing to beware. I grew up sheltered and scared so I have to remove some mental blocks but I won’t stop until I finally break out of my box

Festival Mamis

From “Festival Fever A collection of festival poems by Sammy Marrero

From plane to plane From state to state I fall in love everywhere I stay. There was Mia from Philly and Meadow from Queens. Meadow was my first love but Mia rocked my nation with her vocals and beats. I fly I fly I go I go. There was Summer in Milwaukee and Lolla in Chicago. Summer was nice And Lolla was fun but I never I never Will ever will ever Forget Ella from Cali. In the Valley the Valley In the sand the sand We sang and sang in the dessert until the fireworks banged.
