Castleberry Hill High School for the Arts Spring 2014 | David Yocum Professor | Options II Studio
Castleberry Hill High School for the Arts (CHHSA) is a comprehensive studio project for an urban Atlanta charter high school. The design challenge was to accommodate an artistic high school with 400 students within 54,617 sqft on a triangular site. The program required studios, a stage, and a gymnasium along with the general program associated with a high school. As a comprehensive studio, structure, HVAC, life safety and environmental aspects were also taken into account and integrated into the design. 6
The design for this project was derived from a series of photographs taken of the site that were combined together and used to construct a theoretical section (left). A plan was then drawn of the horizontal lines in section to produce another drawing (middle). Then a series of drawings translated the curves to rectilinear shapes to create a more feasible building that can be read as section or plan (bottom). Theoretical Section Process Work

Castleberry Hill High School for the Arts Area Plan, Site Plans + Floor Plans
Castleberry Hill, a community located southwest of downtown Atlanta was once a industrial area that has recently seen revitalization into an arts district. The triangular nature of the site is the intersection of a major road, Northside Drive, and 4 other secondary streets. The site has a 22’ elevation change from the tallest point in the southeast corner to the northern tip. Future development of the area was recognized in the project with the addition of apartments and stores on the eastern side as well as condominiums on the northern side. Area Plan [Autocad 2014]

The Program for CHHSA was divided into 3 main areas, Academic, Athletic and Artistic. These 3 main classifications were then strategically placed in the building. Classrooms are placed on the eastern side for morning exposure to help students stay awake through class and the athletic zones are on the western edge to take advantage of afternoon light. The artistic zones utilized a more controlled solar exposure by placing those areas in the more central areas of the school. The gallery has short long windows to control sun exposure and the stage area is placed between the gymnasium and administration to shield the sun from it. Studios have a northern exposure for less intense and more evenly distributed light. Classrooms have typical shape and when 4 classrooms come together they produce enclaves for social interaction.

Metro Atlanta Children’s Home | Machine in the Garden Fall 2013 | Fred Pearsall Professor | Options I Studio
A recent Duke University study concluded that children who grew up in children’s homes have better quality of life and success than their conterparts who were raised in foster care. This project sought to revive the abolished children’s home methodology and typology. The overall design was influneced by studying the behavior and backgrounds of the types of children that would be living in a children’s home. The goal was to create a facility that would provide an equal quality of life that a child with parents would have. Atlanta is known for having a lush expanse of trees spread out through its limits. Utilizing an urban site and creating a machine not only for living but for raising children from infancy to 18 years old, the exterior design of the facility sought to become welcoming and secure as well as employ sustainable techniques for the facility. On the outside of the facility is an array of pipes that contain an evergreen species of star jasmine. These plants provide a green security for the facility and when in bloom produce a white blossom. The plants also participate in cleansing the air similar to green lung. As air passes around the plant leaves, carbon dioxide is removed from the air and oxygen is returned. With in the pipes are water tubes with nutrients to feed the plants as well as air from the HVAC system in the facility. In the process of Active Phytoremediation, air is blown across plant roots. The roots have the abiltiy to naturally filter the air, by digesting bacteria, toxins, VOCs and other pollutants without the plants becoming toxic. This will provide the children’s home with clean air from a natural source and save the faciltiy money on energy costs. 20

Project III
Introduction
1/32nd Scale Model [Chipboard, Metal Mesh, Acrylic, Bass Wood]
Vietnamese Community Center | Chicago, IL Spring 2013 | Tim Harrison Professor | Core III Studio
In an effort to understand design from a different cultural perspective, I created a Vietnamese community center for a small ethnic group thriving in a city I had never been in before. The program dictated spaces for child and elderly care, an intergral part of Vietnamese culture, and spaces for the community to gather and use on a daily basis. 28

Nighttime Rendering [Rhinoceros 4, VRAY]
Single Family Home | Cabbagetown, Atlanta, GA Fall 2012 | Harris Dimitropoulos Professor | Core II Studio
This project took the a neighborhood full of “shotgun style” type homes with long rectangular dimensions and required a home with similar size and all the contemporary features to be designed in it’s place. The exterior walls and roof were designed for the use of ETFL and FTFL materials to improve energy efficiency for lighting and HVAC. 32

Georgia Tech Visitor Center
Summer 2012 | Charles Rudolph + Jude Le Blanc Professors | Core I Studio
This project was to create a new visitor center for the Georgia Institute of Technology. The facility should have classrooms for students, an enlarged campus map, an auditorium and an exterior garden. A large opening and covered area allows easy access from the entrance to the rear exterior garden. 36
