Hamptons My chosen photograph is a portrait taken from a series entitled, Snoop in the Hamptons by Tyrone Lebon.
I was drawn to this image through the girl. She is highly reminiscent of the girls found in hip-‐hop/rap videos in the 1990’s; this is reinforced by everything from her hair, jewelry and even ethnicity. Her facial expression gives off a very conceited and superior feeling, which can be linked to being described as a diva, almost ‘Prima Donna’.
Other still from the series…
I really like the candid ‘rawness’ of the series as a whole. I think it really adds to the nostalgic feel of 90’s rap videos. I also really liked the way you can see the edge of the negatives, this not only shows what format the photographs were taken, it also gives this unedited/untreated feel to the series. Through that I have chosen to roll with shooting on VHS, mainly because VHS is the main video format of the 90’s, it instantly tells you what time period we are dealing with, and I feel for this series the time period is a huge part of what the photographer is trying to get across.
The shoot
These are the two models I went with. I wasn’t able to find a female with a mixed or different ethnic background that would have been ideal. But I feel this two girls were able to portray the feeling nicely.
