the child of a restless family

Beginning life in a restless family, I found myself moving from house to house, city to city more often than grade to grade. And while life on the go meant many new opportunities, it also meant the one and only constant in my life would be me. Translating this to my work, my constant relocation meant that I would never find satisfaction in working the day to day. It means I need diversity and flux. And so does design. Design needs to adapt, framing the visual language to contextualize and convey the message in a way that asks questions, provides insights, and allows an audience to make their decisions. This way, the ideas of the project, lesson, discussion, whatever, open the way for a deeper dialogue between a message and its audience.

concept_Directed Studies took a normal, potentially mundane topic, something that surrounds our lives, and presents it in a manner that visually draws the reader in. The root idea sprang from a daily commute, and the recognition that familiar paths become so second nature that they seem almost intuitive. Think about it—how many times have you driven to work, only to realize that you could not recall any moment of the trip just taken? Because the “noise” in this study became navigation, its method of presentation needed to deal with ideas of wayfinding and mapping. Folding would be vital…

TE MAN CAME

post-colonial tea party _ How do we approach ideas of post-colonial discourse without glazing over the issues or the eyes of their audience? Or inciting extreme violence?

concept _ Post-colonialism discourse defines today’s society based on the understanding that many of the global cultures of today rose from the ashes of colonialism and imperialism. Simply, a country formed as a new colony, eventually fought the “motherland,” and emerged from that effort as a now freed and sovereign nation. The Post-Colonial Tea Party project opens post-colonial discourse by first setting the stage. Since Britain used many of its first colonies as a means of growing, producing, or selling tea (Google “Opium Wars” and you’ll see the effects this had on China), perhaps having a conversation over a cup of piping hot tea makes sense, yes? Or at least more civilized. Using tea as our common language, the hope remains that we can talk reasonably about our overly rebellious upbringing, in a civilized manner, where the only real lumps of concern are in regards to sugar. One? Or two?

Turning this off so that I could listen for something, a moment, a small event, proved to be harder than expected. One day I realized, as I walked across campus, that the sounds surrounding me were the same day after day. This specific day stood out, as the first winter rain was beginning to fall. I could see tours of students and parents frantically pulling out umbrellas, and was nearly run over as a group of girls— in a huff and a rush—blew past while complaining about the previous night’s boyfriend fight. I heard rain (plt plt). I heard annoyed conversations (pssssst). And remarkably, I had my camera. What a perfect moment.

concept_ Seven Hills Coffee Roasters is a locally owned Cincinnati company formed when two work friends became tired of looking for the right cup of coffee. The name Seven Hills came from the local idea that Cincinnati’s sister city is Rome, and that it literally shares the idea of seven hills with her (though technically there are far more than seven). Taking a cue from the rich history of the city, its place as a trading port, and its Queen City status, the rebranding of the Seven Hills Coffee Roasters started, of course, with the hills. Photographs taken around town were abstracted with rich colors to provide warmth in all packaging applications. Historic buildings, parks, festivals, and other events combine with welcoming typography and warm colors to speak a newly redefined 7 Hills Coffee language.

Sites like Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and others all work together to join students with their peers, regardless of location or physical proximity. These sites tend to become distractions within the classroom setting, establishing competition between themselves and the instructor for the students’ attention. txt3ooks examines the potential of this outlet, though, as a teaching vessel. By using the visual vernacular of academia, likening students to Barbies and education to apple pie, this series investigates just what it could mean to look beyond the stereotypes at how students might really learn using channels they understand.

While there are over sixty different cities that exist in the tale, all stories in fact are of Venice, as viewed through lenses of signs, symbols, memories, and more. Postcards from Maurilia tells the story of one city from the book, using postcards to do so. Accordion folds with die-cut shapes provide views of collage-art postcards in one layer, or of hidden images of “natives” from Maurilia when the postcards are removed. The cards themselves contain lines of “wish you were here” descriptions of the town, played against vivid colors and symbolic imagery. The central spine of the book consists of concertina flags, bringing a festive vernacular to the overall design.

Background highlighting calls attention to specific information which leads to called-out backing imagery. Chapter opening imagery merge soft-focus macro photographs with subtle gradients and typographic “ripples” to imply views through algae-filled waters. The binding is a soft cover design with an exposed spine, which mimics the vertical nature of the test tube, while allowing the book to lay flat when opened.

concept_ People navigate differently, depending upon the purpose of the trip. They may wander, using clues from their surroundings to make decisions. Or they may follow maps or other pre-determined routes that they know will get them to their location quickly. KNOWHERE: Designing Ways to Teach Wayfinding attempts to create a teaching model where various methods of navigation are acknowledged, addressed, and used to open a dialogue about the many potentials of wayfinding design and education. In other words, the big idea behind KNOWHERE is that we find ways to teach wayfinding using tools that investigate how context and behavior already inform to influence navigation.

A WORLD OF JELL-O

REAL HIGH PROFILE

DAVID AND GOLIATH

Develop a series of very carefully constructed drawings EXPLORING SPATIAL VOLUMES through a plan-oblique analysis of the negative spaces. To What are the boundaries and limits of the space? What happens at do this, imagine filling the space you thresholds, openings,or other types of borders? are in with massive amounts of jell-o, then removing the “formwork,” or walls and other elements that make up that space.

INCLUDE:

detail (consider column ornament, sculptural elements, eaves, etc.)

MAY INCLUDE:

tonal color

FOCUS:

precision and proper proportion form alignments ornament as necessary to properly describe the volume

AVOID:

gradient over-simplification

This drawing series is designed to provide a greater understanding of the details and elements that are used in the true definition of a space’s volume. Complete no less than one carefully constructed drawing per location, spending no less than thirty minutes per drawing before moving to another location or volume.

REAL HIGH PROFILE

Construct a series of QUICK RAPID-FIRE EXPLORATIONS using profiles of elements in view. Consider all rooftops, silhouettes, and connections. Look at the figure / ground relationships between the buildings, objects and What are the primary shapes these result in? the backgrounds the are housed within. INCLUDE:

foreground (dark line weight) middle ground (medium line weight) background (light line weight)

FOCUS:

perspective OR constructed orthographic projection abstraction of SPACE (3D) into SHAPE (2D)

AVOID:

photo-realism tone detail

This assignment is designed to help you explore how lines in an environment (natural or man-made) can define shape, space, and lead the eye. Complete no less than five drawings per location, spending no more than fifteen minutes on each.

DAVID AND GOLIATH

A WORLD OF JELL-O

Document in a series of quick, but detailed sketches, the USE OF SCALE AS AN ORGANIZING METHOD in an urban environment. Block out the volumetric How does each element influence human elements, such as buildings, doorways, interaction within a context? gateways, in this environment using isometric or perspective drawing techniques. Combine with human profile drawings, showing through repeated symbols how often one element encourages human interaction.

INCLUDE:

figure foreground (dark line weight) middle ground (medium line weight) background (light line weight)

MAY INCLUDE:

flat tonal color gradient spliced photo-collaging to represent human interaction

FOCUS:

scale accurate proportion perspective -OR- constructed orthographic projection

AVOID:

photo-realism detail photography to represent architectural elements

This series should explore how scale within a context sets up a sense of hierarchy in that space, and how this hierarchy can be used to call attention to certain elements and influence interaction. Construct no less than five drawings per location, spending no more than fifteen minutes sketching and thirty minutes (total) in completing the composition.
