BASICS PAGE SETTINGS Use the provided master page, paragraph styles, and character styles Color Profile: North American Prepress 2  RGB: Adobe 1998  CMYK: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 Appearance of Black: Accurate Rich Black: #000000 / C75, M68, Y67, K90

MARGINS & BLEEDS 3p0 (0.5”) Margins around each page.* This will also give us a 6p0 (1”) gutter between pages 1p6 (0.25”) bleed around entire spread* Headlines and images may extend past margins and into the gutter If photos or graphics extend past margin, they should go fully into the bleed

Don’t change the master page or any of the pre-defined styles.

Body Copy, Footnotes, and Credit Lines cannot extend past the margin.


TEXT SETUP COLUMNS & GRID Columns: 12 Columns, 1p6 (¼”) Gutter Baseline Grid: 12pt, starting 0p0 from top of Margin Paragraphs should be 3, 4, 5 or 6 columns wide.  Other widths are acceptable if approved by a Design Director.

TEXT TREATMENT Positive Articles: Use positive font option* Negative Articles: Use negative font option* Body copy must be legible and use the baseline grid* Body copy must be flush left, rag right with 9pt optical margin alignment, a well-balanced rag, sense breaks, and no orphans, widows, or hyphens! All body copy should be aligned to the vertical grid. Paragraphs should never be less than three lines long. HEADLINES HEADLINES You MUST use an open-licensed font (e.g. FontSquirrel, League of Movable Type, etc.) or a font from the Universal Type Client, unless YOU pay for it. Do NOT fuck this up. This is your chance to express your creativity as a designer. Go wild. Do something unique. DO NOT BE BORING, but know that your choices will be under fire during critiques Headline and subheadline designs should work well together Subheadlines should be at least one baseline above body copy Subheadlines are optional but encouraged

HANDLETTERING Allowed for headlines and subheadlines Your lettering must be approved by both Design Directors and Lorrie Frear You must be willing to work with the Design Directors and Lorrie Frear to develop your lettering Must be well-composed, typographically correct, and maintain a high level of craftsmanship This option is difficult. Not for the faint of heart.


EXTRAS PULL QUOTES Must align to the 12-column grid Not required to align to the baseline grid Do not need to match body copy, but use discretion when designing.
