On Course Quissett Shield/Nobska Trophy Sign-up Continues If you haven’t yet signed up for the Quissett Shield/Nobska Trophy tournament, there is still time. Last day for sign-up is May 28. After being away from the Club during the winter, members are signing up for the men’s Quissett Shield and the women’s Nobska Trophy tournament, getting ready to renew friendships, resume good-natured rivalries and meet new people. This year the competition will consist of individual match play tournaments, so that members will be competing on a hole-by-hole basis. There is no qualifying round necessary, as participants will be seeded by handicap. The respective tournament brackets will be posted on the Pro Shop bulletin board on May 29. All participants are invited to the Pairings Party at the Clubhouse, May 29 at 5:00 p.m., where players will meet their first opponents. Each pairing is responsible for scheduling their own match. (See below for the schedule for completion of each match.) Play continues throughout the summer. Each winner advances to play the winner from the adjacent bracket. Final play is on Championship Sunday, August 25. “It’s a great tournament, where the excitement builds throughout the season,” said Glenn Kelly, Head Golf Professional. “We can start with two-or-three-dozen players, and by Championship Sunday we’re down to two. The final match play is on that day as the whole club watches.” To sign up, go to the Club website and download the application form, or pick up a form at the Pro Shop. The entry fee is $10.00.

From the General Manager Dear Woods Hole Members! Great things are happening at your Club! Among those has been the very encouraging feedback about our new hours of Clubhouse operation and the full-service menu served every day. I’ve had many Members call me to verify we are indeed open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily…it’s terrific to hear how pleased they are when I tell them that, “Yes, we’re here, and we’ll be waiting for you!” In fact, Member usage has been much stronger this year compared to last year at the same time (almost 50% more Member use in April), and clearly we are off to a great Season! Many Members have told us they would enjoy a good meal or refreshment after a round of golf, and we want to remind everyone that we are open all afternoon, including Saturdays and Sundays. So after your next round, drop by the Clubhouse for some terrific food and a cold beverage. We’ll make sure you are not disappointed. (continued on page 5)

18-Hole Women Kick Off Spring Season The 18-Hole Women’s Golf Association kicked off its spring season on Tuesday, April 16, the original date of April 9 having been rained out. The group plays every Tuesday morning during the spring, summer and fall. The only requirement to participate is a 36 or lower handicap. “We’re here to play a game of golf, but also to have fun,” said Sue Gregory, Chairman of the 18-Hole Women. One of the ways the group keeps things interesting is to have different weekly tournaments. When the players arrive in the morning, they find out which team they are on and who they are playing with. Each week, prizes are awarded in the form of credits that can be used in the Pro Shop.

How To Join the 18-Hole Women

It’s easy: 1. Contact Sue or Diane and say you want to play. Sue Gregory, 508-548-5640 sgregory@kinlingrover.com, Diane Anastasia, 508-563-2061 ddanast@gmail.com, 2. In the Spring and Fall Seasons, all you have to do is show up at the Pro Shop by 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday mornings with your $1.25 entry fee, and then play informally at 9:00 a.m. In the Summer Season, you must sign up by Sunday at 6:00 p.m. in order to play the following Tuesday. There is an official sign-up sheet located in the women’s locker room. Also in the Summer Season, you need to be at the Pro Shop by 8:00 a.m. to receive your scorecard and rules sheet. Tee off is 8:30 a.m. sharp. 3. Have a blast!

For the spring opener, the women played a casual game. Gayle Perry, a past 18-Hole Women chairperson who has been a member of the club since 1990, played her first 18 holes of the season. “It was just really pleasant being on the course again,” she said. She talked about the challenges the women faced after being away from the game for most of the winter. “We were getting to know the course again, getting to know our swings again. It wasn’t always pretty,” she joked. “You envision where the ball is going to be, line it up, and it goes in the opposite direction! But the course was in fine shape. It was terrific.” “There’s a lot of camaraderie in this group, and I hope more women will join this season,” said Sue. “It’s a great opportunity to meet new people and also to challenge your game.” It’s easy to join. Just call Sue Gregory or Diane Anastasia (contact information in sidebar). They’ll arrange the teams and make you feel welcome.

Net Club Championship Renamed

Governor’s Cup and First Lady’s Trophy In case you missed the news—the Net Club Championship has been renamed. The competition is now known as the Governor’s Cup (men) and the First Lady’s Trophy (women). The decision to rename the event was made by the Tournament Committee during the winter. “We wanted to give the competition a stronger identity,” said Glenn Kelly, Head Golf Professional. “It’s a great event, and, while the name Net Club Championship is fine, we think Governor’s Cup and First Lady’s Trophy have more personality.” The championship event was created nine years ago in response to golfers looking for more match play events, where handicaps are allowed in order to level the playing field. “It provides opportunities for greater participation,” Glenn said.

Qualifying Dates for Governor’s Cup and First Lady’s Trophy: June 22 and 29 It’s time to get ready for the Governor’s Cup and First Lady’s Trophy championship. There is a qualifying round for all competitors, and the 18-hole net score is used to seed the players into the appropriate brackets. Qualifying dates are Saturdays June 22 and 29. You may choose only one day in which to qualify. The low four qualifiers from each day advance to match play. To enter, go to the club website and download an application, or obtain an application at the Pro Shop. On the qualifying date you select, pick up your official scorecard at the Pro Shop. Brackets will be determined at the end of the qualifying period. After that, you have 10 days to complete your individual matches. The entry fee is $20.00. “Throughout the summer we like to run events that are both competitive and fun,” said Glenn Kelly, Head Golf Professional. The Governor’s Cup and First Lady’s Trophy certainly meet that criteria.”

Download Tournament Applications • Log in at woodsholegolfclub.com • Click on Golf • Click on the Weekly Calendar You will be able to view each month, with the name of the events on the dates to be played. Click on the event, and a tournament application will appear.

Senior-Seniors Return Richard B. McElvein M.D., Member of the Senior-Seniors, has given us an update on the group. As in the past, we will gather at the Clubhouse at 9:00 a.m. for tee-off at 9:30 every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. A reminder: If you are not present at 9:00 a.m., you will not have an assigned group and will not be eligible for point scoring.
