Why does Tire Wear maTTer? As tires are used, the tread normally becomes shallower and overall performance changes. Irregular tread wear may also occur for a variety of reasons. Too little tire tread creates unsafe driving conditions as it reduces traction between the road and the tire. Regularly checking your tire for wear will help you gauge if it is time to buy new tires online.

Centre wear In centre wear the tire is worn down in the centre i.e., the tire will have tread on the sides of the tire but a smooth, narrow strip of wear around its centre. The cause for centre wear is usually over inflation. Overinflated tires bulge out more in the centre which the tire then rides on. As a result, the bulge wears out faster than the sides of the tire. Centre wear can be avoided by proper tire inflation.

Shoulder Wear Shoulder wear occurs when the tire is under inflated and is the exact opposite of centre wear. Unlike centre wear where the centre of the tire is worn, in this case the shoulders or the sides of the tire are worn, leaving the centre relatively untouched. This occurs as in an under-inflated tires most of the tire comes in contact with the road.

Feathered wear When the tread blocks of a tire have rounded edges on one side and sharp edges on the other then the tires are said to have suffered feathered wear. This wear is caused due to wheel misalignment or high-speed cornering. This wear can be easily avoided by aligning wheels regularly and slowing down on corners.

Cupped Wear Cupped wear occurs when the shocks or struts gouge out small pieces of rubber from the tire. Instead of holes however, cupped wear results in smooth patches where the hole is smoothed out by the road friction. This occurs due to wheel misalignment.

Flat Spot Wear • Flat spot wear is caused by the friction caused by hard braking and skidding. It is can be observed when a certain spot on the tire is worn smooth, leaving the rest of the tread relatively untouched.

Toe wear “Toe refers to the angles at which the tires are aligned. Toe-in tires are also known as positive toe, in this scenario the front of each tire is angled inward. On the other hand, if tires are toe-out or negative toe, then the front of each tire is angled outward. A little toe is normal for every vehicle, but misalignment increases the degree of toe to and causes tires to wear prematurely.

FINAL TOUCH Checking your tires regularly for wear helps you identify any problems or issues with the tire so that you can take remedial steps immediately. If tires are too worn then it is time to buy new tires online. So remember to check your tires and drive safe!
