NEW YEAR NEW START
THE
SAMTEC SIGNAL
HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!! About 3,000 Samtec Associates (located in China, Vietnam, Singapore, Malaysia, and more) celebrate Chinese New Year. The Chinese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival, is celebrated for 15 consecutive days. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; this day is called Lantern Festival. The first day of the New Year is known as Yuan Dan, or First Morning of the year. During the 15 day period new year, visits pay respect, worship, salute the year) will be made to family and friends. On the first day, the oldest and most senior members of families will be visited, the visits serve to strengthen family ties. Bài nián refers to both, ‘pay a New Year’s call’ as well as ‘wishing somebody a Happy New Year’. Another tradition is welcoming guests with tea and sweet treats, such as sugared fruits meant to sweeten one’s upcoming year. Sweets and fruits are served on a round or octagonal tray - this form resembles togetherness so the tray is most commonly translated as the “Tray of Togetherness”. The amount of sweets will be arranged in eight units, because the number eight symbolizes luck. At times, an arrangement of nine units can be found, this number represents wealth, good fortune and family unity (The Chinese lucky number is ‘8’ and the Thai- Chinese lucky number is ‘9’). The visitors bring a small gift like oranges, tangerines, mandarins as the fruit which symbolizes gold, wealth and good fortune. The Chinese New Year is associated with several myths and customs too. The festival was traditionally a time to honor deities as well as ancestors. The evening preceding the New Year’s Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. It’s also traditional for every family to thoroughly clean their house, in order to sweep away any ill-fortune and to make way for incoming good luck. They also decorate window and doors with red paper-cuts and couplets. Popular themes include that of good fortune or happiness, wealth, and longevity. Other activities include lighting firecrackers and giving money in red paper envelopes. In the northern regions of China, dumplings are featured prominently in meals to celebrate the festival. It serves as the first meal of the year, either at midnight or as breakfast of the first day.
THE YEAR OF THE OX With the Lunar Year comes the arrival of the Year of the Ox. After all the turbulence of the Year of the Rat, a change is most welcome — but what does it actually mean for the year ahead? Five things you did not know about the Year of the Ox: 1. No major disasters this year The Year of the Rat is traditionally a year of turbulence in which change and disasters are commonplace. That was certainly the case in 2020 when the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe, killing more than 2 million people and causing widespread economic mayhem.
But while they are also perceived as being less social and lacking in communication skills, those born in the Year of the Ox greatly value their close relationships, making them loyal friends. 4. Hard work will pay off this year As befits a creature that traditionally toiled in the fields, the ox is perceived as a hard worker. Zodiac experts believe the Year of the Ox is a period when hard work will be rewarded even more than usual. The year is also said to be a year when people will feel the full weight of their responsibilities. What this means is that by working extra hard at something, you will get on top of it no matter how challenging the task may be.
The Year of the Ox is traditionally a calm, stable, and economically prosperous one. After the Year of the Rat everyone just had, a calm, stable, boring Year of the Ox is exactly what we want.
This has been interpreted by many as a great opportunity. If you have a big life goal you have always wanted to achieve but never quite got round to, 2021 is a good year to give it a go.
2. Famous People born in the Year of the Ox Just a few other household names born under this zodiac beast are actors George Clooney and Meryl Streep, Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, pop star Bruno Mars, narrator Morgan Freeman, Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar, the famous Walt Disney, Princess Diana, Malcom X, and former Emperor of Japan Hirohito.
5. The Ox was supposed to be first The ox is the second animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle, but it should have been the first. The reason for this comes from the mythological tale of the Great Race.
3. People born in the Year of the Ox are reliable and value their friends Every creature in the zodiac represents the personality and character traits people born in that year are supposed to have. People born in the Year of the Ox are reliable, strong, fair, patient, kind, methodical, calm, and trustworthy. Not all the traits are positive though; oxen are also opinionated and stubborn.
This story tells how the Jade Emperor, one of the most important Taoist gods, held a race where the first 12 winners would be chosen as the royal guard. The winners of this race ended up as the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac in the order that they finished. The rat was initially in the lead but was unable to cross the river, so it tricked the ox into giving it a ride. It stayed on the ox’s back all the way to the finish, but then the rodent jumped down and scampered to the emperor first. As a result, the rat became the first animal in the cycle, with the ox relegated to second.

INTRODUCING SAMTEC RESERVE™ 1-DAY SHIPPING ON OVER 200,000 PRODUCTS Straight from the Samtec blog: blog.samtec.com By: Cody Wheeler Yesterday, I ordered dinner from a local restaurant and it was at my door in 45 minutes. Just this morning, I had three packages delivered before 8 AM. As I write this post, a personal shopper is on their way to my house with groceries via Instacart. Later today, I’ll get a few more packages delivered that I ordered late yesterday. We live in a rapidly evolving world of convenience and same-day shipping. This is something that consumers love and have come to expect. And even though Samtec is mostly a B2B company, virtually everyone in this world is a consumer at home, and those consumers have gotten used to being able to have virtually anything they want shipped to them incredibly quickly. Enter Samtec Reserve™ Samtec Reserve™ is a new designation that we’ve given to over 200,000 (and growing quickly) connectors and cables. These are popular stocked parts that are guaranteed to ship in 1-day. Basically, if you see this badge, you can sleep better knowing your product will arrive quickly. You’ll now see this badge beginning to appear throughout the website. It currently exists on full part and series pages, and we’ll be adding it to applications such as Solutionator and Search and My Samtec in the coming weeks. Here is where you’ll see it on each page. Series Page If your product is eligible, you’ll see the badge on the right side of the configurator on the series page. This may appear and disappear as you configure your product based on the part number. Part Number Page If your product is eligible, you’ll see the badge on the top right side of the part number page. The exact position of the badge may change based on your login status.
Coming Soon for Samtec Reserve™ Next up, you’ll begin seeing the badge within My Samtec in our Pricing and Delivery tool, as well as our Search and Solutionator tools, and just about anywhere you can find a Samtec part number throughout the website. COSTA RICA IS ISO50001 CERTIFIED! Victor Villarreal and Leandro Petinari were dedicated to obtain the ISO50001 certification for Samtec Costa Rica. They focused their efforts for almost all of 2020. Although this certification isn’t manditory, our Costa Rica facility is extremely passionate about sustainability and becoming more energy efficient. To obtain the certification, they focused their efforts on the multidisciplinary action items listed below. To obtain this certification, Samtec Costa Rica had to: • Develop a policy for more efficient use of energy • Fix targets and objectives to meet the policy • Use data to better understand and make decisions about energy use • Measure the results • Review how well the policy works, and • Continually improve energy management
“
Congratulations to Victor Villarreal and the CR Facilities Engineering Team for achieving the ISO 50001 Certification. This certification acknowledges our improvements in energy management and electrical usage. Costa Rica is a world leader in energy conservation with over 90% of its electrical demand generated from renewable sources. Samtec CR’s commitment to the ISO 50001requirements supports the Costa Rica commitment to renewable energy and a clean, green environment. -Jeff Matheny, Facilities Manager

GRANT RECIPIENTS Samtec Cares received requests totaling over $2M and granted almost $500,000 during the Winter 2020 Grant Cycle to the following nonprofit organizations assisting in fulfilling their missions. The Program was created in August 2018 to positively impact and assist organizations within the communities in which we live, work and play. Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements and culture of the black community and their central role in U.S. history. Carter G. Woodson, known as the ‘Father of Black history’ said, “Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.”
Jessie Daniels in Samtec Columbia, SC shares: “My hope is, one day, everyone can love and care for a person because they’re human, and not because of the color of their skin. Many times, we find our history erased or just overlooked. We must do better. After it’s all said and done, we’re all humans. I truly encourage everyone to seek unity.”
MINDY JACKSON ASSOCIATE SPOTLIGHT
I am Mindy Jackson, I am an order specialist, and I have been here for 28 years. Being at Samtec for as long as I have and working with the people I have, it has really felt like family. So for Samtec to embrace and acknowledge Black History Month, it is a joy in my heart because that’s what Samtec does. They want everyone to feel like they belong. That no one is different; everyone is loved and everyone is needed. It’s important for us to know who we are, how we have developed and to help those in our world and community. My favorite black history maker is Maya Angelo. Her words are so brilliant, loving, kind, strong and it’s touched me in such a way that it makes me feel those exact ways that she expressed herself, brilliant, loving, strong, and invincible. My recent favorite black history maker would be Tish Fredrick. She is so amazing. To think of a concept of empowering young girls and giving them the self-esteem to come out of their shells and be exactly who they are. Only Tish Fredrick could do that. She has changed not only my life but also over 400 girls. She is definitely a black history maker.
Samtec Cares sponsored the Black History Month series for Extol Magazine this year. Our Associate Mindy Jackson was a spotlight in one videos and her words are to the right. Her spotlight as well as other spotlights, can be viewed on Extol Magazine’s Facebook page.
I hope you understand that Black History Month isn’t just a month, it’s a life time. Black history happens every day. It’s not just about those names you know but also about those behind the scenes. For every leader you know, there is always a black history maker supporting them that you may not know! Be encouraged, be a black history maker, and be strong!

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
For more than 100 years, March 8th has marked what has come to be known as International Women’s Day in countries around the world. Each year, International Women’s Day chooses a theme. This year, in 2021, the campaign theme is #ChooseToChallenge A challenged world is an alert world. Individually, we’re all responsible for our own thoughts and actions - all day, every day. We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women’s achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world and to understand that it is our differences that makes the world a better place.
We’ve asked Samtec women around the world what it means to be a women while working at Samtec and if there is anything they’d like to share with other Associates. Take a look at the next few pages to read their inspirational responses.
VESTA MA DONGGUAN
Hi everyone! My name is Vesta Ma and I am 28 years old. I have been working for Samtec China Human Resources for over 6 years. Over this period, I have realized my career and lifestyle dreams. I studied as a receptionist for Samtec in 2014, now I am a training supervisor. I have also managed to travel to many places. I had always dreamt of seeing America, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Korea and even managed to take my grandparents on a holiday to Beijing in China. That was a dream come true. I am really grateful to everyone at Samtec for their support and encouragement and feel honored to be part of the team here. In my opinion, Women---no matter how old you are, be independent, confident, brave and remain young at heart. Do what you want to do, try to do what seems impossible!
MICHELLE OTTEN COLORADO SPRINGS - SME
Technology and engineering is everyone’s game and Samtec provides a fun playing field. I enjoy tackling projects, tasks and issues that not only help the company and people around me but that help me to grow and learn as well.

GRETHEL ACOSTA
For me, being a woman means caring wholeheartedly and being passionate about the things you do, and striving to be the best you can be whilst supporting others to do the same. Looking after Samtec’s distributors provides me with many challenges and opportunities I can throw myself into and be creative, problem solve, learn, and grow. I am constantly impressed by the smart, committed and talented women I work and interact with at Samtec; they are a true asset to the business.
I love being the strong, compassionate and human woman that I dreamed to be as a child. Being a production supervisor in an area like Plating challenges me and puts me in many situations where I have to work hard. There are days that are very challenging, but they give sweet results that help me to be better and feel fulfilled. That is why to all the beautiful and talented women at Samtec, I say that the world is better with us!

JURAIDAH BINTI ABU HASSAN PENANG
Juraidah Binti Abu Hassan was the 1st women Associate of Samtec Penang. As a Quality Support Associate, she joined Samtec on April 2, 2012, the day when PE plant started operation. She is pleased to be part of the Samtec Family for almost 9 years. For Juraidah, to be a woman means, “There is no limit what we, as women, can accomplish.”
BRIDGETT SMITH NEW ALBANY
To be a woman here at Samtec and in a leadership position is an example of what happens when you fuel your path with hard work, resilience, and determination. Both personal and professional experiences with people that don’t think or look like me have enriched me into a leader that is always looking to positively impact and empower people, especially women. Bridgett’s message to women is, “Be inspired to choose your own path and ask for help along the way.”
OATS 2021 OPERATIONS AND APPS TEAM SUMMIT
OATS (Operations and Apps Team Summit) 2021 The Operations Applications Development Teams held their first ever virtual Summit on March 11th! The purpose of the Summit was to share the 2021 long and short term roadmaps along with emerging technology and processes for the teams. After a tough year with the pandemic, it was great to see everyone “face-to-face” online together as a group! There were 61 associates from the global Operations and Core Services Teams that attended the one-day Summit. John Shine kicked it off for us by reviewing some highlights from the company meeting and discussing how IT supports/ impacts the business. Jeremy Hudson, Brandon Rogers, Brad Johnson and Daniel Williams presented the Roadmaps for 2021 for the “Triad” of Operations, Admin/Finance and Sales. After the roadmap updates, Arthur Penn, Esteban Corrales, Paul Nolan and Ben Patrick from the Solutions Architecture Team presented an Innovation & Modernization Review of our Certified Datastream, Downloads and Complex Products Systems. There were several topics covered with presentations from various teams. Brian O’Keefe and Ian Henisa presented on Quality and Testing. Vinay Kutty presented on Agile and Drew McKinney presented on User Centered Design. Along with the updates and presentations we had a treasure hunt and a fun activity with custom Samtec drumsticks and music. A special thank you to Callie Payne (Learning and Development) for her expert Zoom guidance in conducting the summit and Paige Martin for help with communications! This could be an annual event to share information with the teams and give everyone a break from the normal day to day operations.
FLASHBACK TO SEPTEMBER 2016 On Septermber 21, 2016, our 56,000 gallon shark tank was delivered! This tank is 23 feet wide and 5.5 feet tall. It is still one of the largest private aquariums in the world! All marine life inside the aquarium comes from the Pacific Ocean and each fish was specially chosen by the Cincinnati Aquarium for our tank. The fish are fed vitamin enriched frozen food once a day. Sharks, on the other hand, eat less frequently and are fed once every few days. WHY THE TANK? Samtec is a global, multi-faceted company bringing together many cultures and areas of expertise to be greater than the sum of our parts. We serve many thosands of customers in a variety of industries. Our product line is also flexible and diverse; we offer over a trillion-part number configurations.
Every Samtec Associate plays an important role, and the harmony found in our diversity is what sets us apart. This is a lot like the ecosystem one might find in an aquarium like ours. Every one of the animals in the aquarium plays their part to create a balanced ecosystem. We included a wide variety of species, colors, and sizes of fish for interesting and beautiful viewing. We also had to be sure every animal could live in harmony with the others in the aquarium. We worked with experts from Animal Planet, Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (ATM) and the Cincinnati Aquarium Company to be sure we created the absolute best enviroment for our finned friends, just as we have for our own Associates here at headquarters. NEW YEAR, NEW BEGININGS Check out the next page to read about the currently 8 shark eggs that were laid by our horn shark!
BABY SHARKS COMING SOON The egg shown to the left was laid by a horn shark. We currently have 3 horn sharks in our tank and have found 8 eggs! Did you know approximately 40% of about 400 shark species lay eggs compared to live-births? The horn shark has one of the most identifiable eggs because of the unique spiral. These small sharks are members of the bullhead family. Slow moving and nocturnal, they scavenge close to shore, and return to the same resting place each day. What is next for the baby shark eggs? The baby shark eggs are in the process of being relocated to the Newport Aquarium and possibly some to the Nashville Aquarium. They are more likely to survive when they are in separate tanks so they can access food without having to “fight” larger fish and sharks for it. At these aquariums, they will receive individualized care to help them survive and thrive!

VEGETABLE SAMOSA
VEGETABLE SAMOSA Recipe by Abhilash N Prep Time-45 mins Cook Time-15 mins Total Time-1 hr Serves / Yields: 15 Vegetable Samosa is a favorite tea time snack of every Indian. Crispy on the outside and with a delicious spicy potato veggie filling inside. Ingredients • Oil - For frying For Samosa dough (outer layer) • All purpose flour | Maida - 2 cups • Rava | Sooji | Semolina - 2 tbsp • Ghee - 2 tbsp • Oil - 2 tsp • Salt - 1/2 tsp • Water - as needed For stuffing • Oil - 2 tsp • Jeera - 2 tsp • Coriander seeds - 1 tbls • Red chilli powder - 1/4 tsp • Garam masala - 1 tsp • Coriander powder - 1/4 tsp • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp • Green chilli - 2 small (finely chopped) • Ginger - 1 tbls (finely grated) • Garlic - 1 tbls (finely grated) • Onion - 1 medium (finely chopped) • Carrot - 1 medium (partially boiled and finely chopped) • Green peas - 1/4 cup • Potato - 2 large (boiled and roughly mashed) • Cashews - 5 (finely chopped) • Coriander leaves - 1/4 cup (finely chopped) • Salt - 1 tsp (adjust per taste) Instructions 1. First let’s start with the dough for the samosa outer layer. In a mixing bowl, add all the ingredients under “For samosa dough” and mix them thoroughly by crumbling the flour between the palms. Thereby the mixing will be even. If you are able to gather the mixture, then that’s the right consistency. If not, add some more oil to bring it to the right consistency.
2. Now add water little by little to the mixture and make a dough which should be harder than poori dough. I used around 1/4 cup of water. Adjust the water quantity accordingly. Keep the dough covered and leave it to rest for about 30 minutes. 3. While the dough is resting, prepare the stuffing. Heat a pan with oil, add the jeera. Once its color starts to change, add the garlic, ginger, green chilli, onion and saute till the onion becomes translucent. Add the chilli powder, turmeric, coriander powder and coriander seeds and saute for 1 minute. 4. Add the carrot, peas, cashews, salt and saute for a minute. Then add the mashed potato and garam masala, mix thoroughly until the masala gets mixed evenly. Keep stirring for 2 minutes. 5. Turn off the heat and garnish with coriander leaves and mix. Let the mixture cool and come to room temperature. 6. Now, moving back to the outer layer for the samosa. Start kneading the rested dough until it feels soft. Divide it into equal sized balls (medium size). Start rolling them into a circular shape with a rolling pin, without adding flour. Do not roll into thin sheets, the sheets should be thick. 7. Cut them into two equal halves so you get an two equal semi circles. Take one half, make the samosa folding. 8. Seal the sides of the sheets by applying water while folding. Once you are finished with the samosa cone, stuff the cone with the prepared masala stuffing and seal it nicely. 9. Heat a pan with oil. Once the oil is hot, turn down the heat to low. Oil should not be too hot while frying. Fry the samosas in batches for 10-12 min low heat. Once they turn into golden brown color, remove from oil and drain the excess oil on a paper towel. 10. Enjoy them with imli chutney, coriander chutney or ketchup. Note: To get a crispy samosa outer layer, without any bubble, like restaurant style, the dough should be in right consistency. Do follow the process as instructed above without missing any step. Take extra care while adding water to dough. We do not want our dough to be sticky or too dry. - Tightly pack the samosa cones with stuffing. It will help the samosa hold its shape. - While frying the samosa, they will not float in oil and instead they will settle down in the pan leading to a burnt bottom. So keep stirring at regular intervals. - The oil should not be too hot because samosa color will change soon before the samosa is cooked through. So maintain the temperature in low to medium. While frying, do turn the flame to low and fry till there color changes to golden brown. It takes about 12 minutes per batch of samosa (2-3 samosa in a batch).

3 LIMITING BELIEFS AND HOW TO REFRAME THEM
By Life Coach, Peggy Wu 1 “I’m too old / too young” Your age is just right. What matters is today because yesterday is long gone and tomorrow is not here yet. Reframe - “It’s never too early or too late to start taking action for my dreams.” 2 “I’m not smart / not educated enough” The truth is no one knows everything, and everyone can learn. Think of someone you look up to and ask yourself, does that person know everything? Or, does that person have the desire to learn? If that person can learn, you can too! Reframe - “I’m a lifelong learner, and I don’t have to know everything to succeed.” 3 “I’m not good enough” Based on whose standard? What is good enough, anyway? Don’t worry about what other people think or say about whether you are good enough because they are not living your life. The critical question is, are you being the person you want to be and leading the life you want to live. If yes, great! If not, then it’s time to think about what you need to do to get there. You are good enough to handle that! Reframe - “I’m good enough to be the person I want to be and lead the life I want to live.”
Your belief affects your action, and your action shapes your reality. Limiting views that you hold for yourself will become your truth if you allow it. It’s time to shake it off and unlearn your limiting beliefs. To begin the unlearning process, ask yourself: • What’s my limiting belief? What’s holding me back? • Where did this come from & why do I believe it’s true? • How does this belief serve me? Acknowledge this limiting belief without judgment. Take on the role of a rational, impartial, and kind observer, and watch your thoughts come and go. Free yourself if a past mistake caused your limiting belief. Forgive others if they intentionally or unintentionally brought this belief upon you. Let go of what happened in the past. Sit back, close your eyes, and breathe in through the nose and breathe out through the mouth. Imagine strengths flowing in with each inhalation, and your limiting belief dissipates with each exhalation. Action steps after reading this post: • Counter your limiting belief by writing down why it’s not true. • Create a mantra that is the opposite of your limiting belief and write it out 3 times every day. Let self-discovery and personal growth be your daily goal. Cheers to a thriving future.
