Tectonic Structures OBJECTIVE To create a live/work space for the musicians of Hollywood who struggle to find a platform in the new world of digital entertainment. In addition to creating a space to record music, considerations were made to performance spaces as well. Finally, a new location for the Grammy museum is placed in the heart of the entertainment capital of the world.

SITE ANALYSIS The project’s site is located directly adjacent from the Capital Records Building in Hollywood, and more importantly sprawls across an active tectonic fault.

CONCEPT To bridge the active fault, a structural system was designed to shift with the tectonic movement.

PROCESS Simultaneously exploring iterations of section, model and back to plan brought a strong sectional proposal as well as a refined understanding of three dimensional space throughout the project.

OBJECTIVE

The Terminus of the new Expo Line of Los Angeles holds a great potential of being more than just a train station. The Icon of the Terminus will be identified with a grandiose, curved structure that defies modern structural aesthetic, bringing attention to the new order of the city.

Bell Canyon HOA OBJECTIVE The 4b Architecture studio at Woodbury University was invited to join the Bell Canyon Community and its HOA in a creative workshop. The efforts were an attempt to stir up some ideas for developing an ultimately higher market value for its residential properties.

SITE ANALYSIS The neighborhood, while basically developed throughout, lacks a cohesive landscape. A thorough survey of the community brought the conclusion that a common space that exemplified the native scape would be beneficial. One of the only remaining parcels that could harness such an idea was the public riparian park, located just inside the gate entrance.

CONCEPT The activation of the park would be easily done with the addition of a public program that all the residents would use. A community “clubhouse that can be thought of as a dues-based restaurant similar to that of a country club will serve as a new social hub for the community

Stereotomic Vault OBJECTIVE Exploring thin shell vault structures with hands on explorations in material agency. Coupled with in the use of cutting edge digital modeling software, complex vaulted forms were rationalized through the use of stereotomic bricks standing in compression, atop a site found with the same digital tools used to create each brick.

PROCESS Using Grasshopper, a complex vault was cut into Stereotomic bricks for assembly. With the help of an extrusion based 3D Printer, the bricks were printed and glued together using a mold of the vault to hold its form. The resulting vault was placed on a site made of solid HydroCal Plaster custom made to fit the vault.

CONCEPT Stereotomy is the set of geometrical knowledge and techniques of drawing and cutting the blocks of stone and their assembly into complex structures. Stereotomy represents an alternative to building techniques based on the use of small pieces of stone or brick, which make up the complex geometry structures and sometimes due to its small size and joints.

Fabrication Experience TOOLS Access to the Digital Fabrication Lab at Woodbury evolved from an interest to a passion quickly. The tools included but were not limited to laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC mill, vacuum-form.

EXPERIMENTS Between assigned projects and training students on the machines, experimentation pushing the capabilities of the tools kept a fresh studio environment ripe with creative solutions. Using the 3 axis CNC for a double-sided “flip mill, as well as iterative explorations with mold-making and 3D printing

CONFERENCE:SYDNEY 2016 Rob|Arch 2016, held at the historic docks of Walsh Bay in Sydney Australia, was an opportunity to grow and develop cutting edge fabrication techniques with industry leaders. Workshops included interactive 3d printing, robotic sewing of custom timber veneer laminates, robotic hot-blade cutting.

4B Site Model LIDAR topography data sets were parsed and a detailed 3D model was created. A complex set of tool-paths were designed. Students were able to host their own site model within the larger site.

Horse Sculpture CNC milling techniques were used to help materialize the thoughts of local artist Ed Gomez. A life-sized shrouded horse, was made with multiple layers of CNC milled Polystyrene foam. The result was on exhibit at multiple venues across the Southern California area.

Ceiling System A decorative ceiling system was fabricated for a grand lobby space. Designed by Wolcott Interiors, this sculptural ceiling was created at MXT Method. Material stock was laminated, milled, treated with flame retardant and primed.
