Preword With the following few pages I would like to illustrate my studies, professional experience and interests in urban design, planning, but also architecture and my free time activities that include photography, design and travelling. My one year stay in Australia, trips around Europe and especially my travels in South and South-east Asia opened my mind in terms of differences around the world and the need to think globally, but act locally. My dream, since a very young age, was to somehow participate in the improvement of the world. in a sustainable manner. But soon I realized it is not even easy to define what actually improves the world around us, in the current rapid era. A saying by Norbert Wiener has its veracity: „We have modified our environment so radically that we must now modify ourselves to exist in this new environment.“ In Bratislava, 2016

This project focuses on conceptual proposal of a network that consists of selected quality green open spaces and other public spaces within a central zone of Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. Selected maps, diagrams and collages in this portfolio have been designed on bases of thorough analysis and opinions of public sphere. The concept of this project lies mainly in revitalization of existing selected public spaces – parks, squares and streets that hide a great potential to improve current conditions of a post-socialist urban environment. Linear green elements, such as green tram tracks, tree lines, cycle paths, universal design of street furniture and use of graphic features in order to define the network and the key connections. The network is conceived on bases of inner relations with respect to connections to surrounding parts of the city. Strategy of the network is to start with defined three connections that cross in the centre of the focal area, and thereafter gradually expand to the remaining parts. The ideology of the concept is to introduce quality and legibility to Bratislava´s public space and thus bring energy and life to the urban environment. Compactness of a central area is an important aspect that predicts urban development and even competition of the central zones, thereafter it is inevitable for the city of Bratislava to define its urban language in order to prevent the thoughtless development that has become a tradition in the past decades. There are several projects designed to improve the quality of the public spaces within the focal area, therefore this studio project concentrates on selected spaces that have not yet been in the centre of design ideas.

EXISTING SITUATION

In 1967, during socialism, a construction of a bridge, as a connection to a developing neighbourhood on the other side of the river Danube, resulted in destruction of a part of Bratislava´s historical centre. This destruction disconnected the City Centre and Bratislava Castle and created a bold linear barrier with fast traffic. The idea of the design is to connect the centre with the castle by a set of bridges and path extensions for pedestrians and cyclist. The compact connection of the past will never be retrieved, but as we have changed the urban environment so radically, we have to change our selves to exist in this new environment.

Regeneration project of South Shields was held during my exchange programme at Newcastle University, UK. The purpose of this project was to design a strategy that would prevent the ongoing urban decay and boost the economy of the town. The theme of the project was urban agriculture as a catalyst for improving the urban environment of South Shields.

COMMERCIAL FARM

VISION:

GROW(ING) in SOUTH SHIELDS South Shields is a town of extensive food growing in which the whole town with its people and visitors participate and benefit from. It is a town connected with green productive network all the way from North Sea to River Tyne. South Shields is a brand under which local food, local businesses, local energy and local strong and healthy community grow together towards a better day. Design of the project consists of: - defining the strategy in terms of urban agriculture and its impacts on social, economic and environmental aspects; - defining a catalyst site: Food Hub – space to start the regeneration project with local communities and institutions; - and urban design interventions in public spaces with urban agriculture features as aspects of new identity of South Shields.

DIPLOMA THESIS: CONTESTING ADAPTABILITY IN PUBLIC SPACE Reshaping Cities: Adaptable Public Spaces

My diploma thesis tries to highlight the importance of the public space within the urban environment. According to the broad range of literature and researches, it is obvious that public spaces have enormous impacts on the operation and the organization of the city. Adaptability can be found in various forms and in various aspects and feature of the public space. Therefore, the design and the concept can always be contested and criticized depending on the point of perspective. The perspective of this thesis approaches adaptable public space in terms of combination of sustainable, community led and smart design that is sensitively implemented in order to inject activities into the public spaces of the model area located in the centre of Bratislava. The aim of this approach, or rather a strategy, is to transform spaces to places, and thereafter, create cities for people, as Jan Gehl reminds us. Notion of time is the key element and a driver for adaptability. But at first, we have to know the right direction, which to take in order to improve our lives in the urban environment. Mahatma Gandhi once said: “Time is irrelevant, if you are going in a wrong direction.”

Connection, or network between Reshaping - City - Adaptability - Public Space is not complex without the presence of People. Especially in an urban environment, everything that is designed or planned is directly or indirectly connected to people. The main idea of this network is to reshape cities to make them liveable, vibrant, sustainable and by most, to make cities for people. Adaptability in public space should support the space itself, but also the city with the ability to adapt to socio-economic, spatial and environmen¬tal changes. Adaptable public space should serve as “research ground” for the public and at the same time encourage the society to change it according to their needs. The problem is often that the public does not recognize the need until it is created and tends to adapt to the deteriorating conditions of public space. Adaptable public space serves people, encourages socializing, enjoyment of the urban environ-

ment, supports local economy and exchange of information and fosters healthier life style. The initiative to create the adaptable public space has to come from the society in the first place, whether from top or from bottom. Public space should adapt to needs of the society, but then the society should adapt to changes in public space. In this case, both the public space and the society can act as catalysts and sup¬port each other. By acting as two interconnected subsystems, they have more effective impact on the whole system – City, in this case. Branding, in English and in Slovak in order to emphasize local character and encourage local communities to identify with the public space

The concept of adaptability consists of three stages, so called AAA - adapt, adopt, absorb. These phases represent a cycle of an adaptable system. Firstly the system adapts to a certain change. This stage can be characterised as a transition process between one point and another. Then it tries to adopt the change so link between other subsystems is cre¬ated. If the creation of the link fails, the process has to start again from the first stage with new incentives. Once the second stage is successfully achieved, the final stage of adaptability comes naturally. The system has then absorbed the changes, subsystems cooperate and support each other and full adaptability has been achieved. The final stage takes place until new disturbances appear and connections deteriorate. After the public space runs out of energy, just like an AAA alkaline battery, a new cycle is needed to keep the system working.

Concept of the public space within the new creative hub of Bratislava lies in its radical transformation from the current state of monotony and sterility. In terms of adaptability of the model area this case scenario is strongly influenced by its combination with the new development of the creative hub since the two ideas were de-veloped coherently. In case of Imrich Karvaš Street, it is inevitable to combine the design of the public space with the new develop¬ment in order to bring diversity of uses and thus life to the space. Imro´s Public Space should encourage people to engage in the life of the city. Adaptable design is not about new technologies or old technologies. It is about the needs of the people and the public experiments whether the certain design solution is success¬ful or not. For example, by bringing moveable containers on Imrich Karvaš Street and turning those into study rooms can be successful during the examination periods. Otherwise, during the rest of the year, the stu¬dents might prefer to use them for socializing and playing games. Adaptable design should be about creating an initial effort, there¬after let the users to adapt it according to their needs. This is how the adaptable design in the public space of Imro´s Creative Hub should operate. The Community Centre is the enforcement body of this concept.
