This visual research is to go alonside my research proposal document which contains relevant information in regards to this work. My concept envolved the use on CMYK colour pallete on a conceptual A- Z which lead me to on the study of perception within art and design. This visual research will develop numerous concepts in which I will eventually create a project proposal for the upcoming term.

INTRODUCTION


CMYK is a color mixing system that uses cyan, magenta, yellow and black (K) inks. It is primarily used in print (business cards, posters, brochures, banners). In 1906, the Eagle Printing Ink Company incorporated the four-color wet process inks for the first time. They discovered that these four colors can be combined to produce an almost unlimited number of richer, darker tones.

CMYK is a subtractive color model. The sunlight bouncing around is basically white light – all the wavelengths, or colors in the spectrum at the same time. Those light wavelengths interact with the world, and our eyes interpret those interactions as color.

When sunlight hits a bright green surface, the surface “absorbs” some of the red, orange and violet colors and reflects the blue, green and yellow colors that we see. So the colors are “subtracted” in a way. Another way to think about this is when you mix cyan, magenta and yellow you get black.

CMYK printing uses a method called half-toning to create different intensities of colour while saving on ink. made. The basic technique involves using little dots instead of solid blocks of ink. These little dots are small and spaced evenly apart so that the human eye sees it as a solid colour and refered to as half-tone.

If you look closely at the images printed in most newspapers, you’ll see that those solid pictures are actually comprised of these small dots.

CMYK- HALFTONE DOTS


Another form of priniting using the CMYK colour model is single plate prinintg. Single plate prinitng is when a color picture, the image is separated into four related versions: cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Each image is made into a plate onto which the right concentration of colored ink is applied. When the four plates each print onto a page, the colors recombine and form the original image.

CMYK-PLATES


Written in 1955, Colour by Overprinting by Donald E.Cooke demonstrated the overprinting permutations of 11 separate colours, in three and four colour groups, across 165 pages. A colour classic. All which can be achived by the CMYK process.

Interested in the notion that basically any colour can be formed from different adaptations of another. The different perspective outlooks colours can have led me to think about perception.

Concepts After my initial visual research I want to be able to create two graphic soultions using the concepts I have looked in to. Firstly a book for designers to use looking at the correlation between shape, form and colour within the field of design titled- ‘Shifts in Perception within Design. The other is a graphic that reveals the severness of diabetes using perceptual graphic design as a basis. This research will enable the project for the upcoming term

Concept 1 “Create a graphic that reveals the severness of diabetes using perceptual graphic design as a basis.� Being a Type 1 diabeteic I am aware of the severity of the condition. I want to graphically raise awarness of the different ways diabetes can effect you and your mental state using perception as my concept. Definition Diabetes melititus is a condition in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. This means people with the condition have to monitor their blood sugar manually and control the amount of sugar in it. If the condition is uncontrolled it can have sever consiquences. There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 is occurs when the body cannot produce insulin at all. Insulin helps the glucose in the blod enter the cells where it turns to energy and fuels the body. Type 1 diabetes is often heriditary and usually apperars before the age of 40 (the most common age being 12) Unlike type 1, type 2 diabetes develops when the body can still make some insulin but not enough to properly control the amount of sugar in the blood properly. In most cases this diabetes comes on through being overweight and a unhealthy lifestyle. Type 2 normally comes on after the age of 25 and accounts for 90% of diabetes. http://www.diabetes.co.uk

Facts About Diabetes - Globally 347 Million people worldwide have diabetes. - In 2014, an estimated 3.4 million people died from the consequences of high fasting blood sugar. - More than 80% of diabetes deaths occur in low and middle income countries - The World Health Organzation projects that diabetes will be the 7th leading cause of death by 2030 - In the UK since 1996 the number of people diagonosed with diabetes has increased from 1.4 million to 2.9 million. This figure is expected to rise to 5 million by the year 2025. - Estimated thst 1/20 people in England has diabetes (diagones and un-diagoned) - 10% of the NHS budget is spent on diabetes- £9 billiona year- £173 million a week- £25 million a day- £1 million a hour£286 a second. - 1/10 people admitted to hospital have diabetes. - 28.4 million items to treat diabetes were proscribed last year at a cost of £561.4 million, this accounts for 7% of all prescription costs - People with diabetes are twice as likely to be admitted into hospital. 1/10 people have diabetes at any given moment. http://www.diabetes.co.uk

Diabetes- Sugar Levels I want to explore how the different atributing factors contribute to the emotional and physical factors that surrond diabetes. This is initial visual experiment in relation to this concept. Having high amount of sugar in your blood with low amounts of insulin can have severe effects on your mental stabilty and emotional state. Short term it can cause extreme thirster, hunger and excessive uriniiating. Having not enough sugar in your blood will lead to a dizzy, un-decribable feeling which is very unpleasen and can cause a hypogycemic coma if untreated. This is the more severe of the two boundaries and can lead to death very easily. Having a good amount of blood sugar in your blood will lead to a normal, healthy life with little if no complications.

Visual Representation of Factors Now I want to visually explore how I can represent the factors that effect a type 1 diabetic using the researched concepts. To explore the notion graphically splitting down the factors of what effects a diabetec is nessesary. The three factors, I believe, are the amount of sugar in the blood and the amount of insulin in the blood. These two factors alone will decypher the emotional state and health of a diabetic. How can we explore Inslulin, blood and emotion in a graphic form?- Moleculer structure.
