PSEUDOVERTICAL UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI
Fall 2017
Group work with Owen Blodgett, Norm Kerr 300 12th Ave, New York, New York 10001

This project serves as a means of ecological cleansing at the end of the vast Hudson Yards development along Manhattan’s Highline. Comprised of aquarium and butterfly conservatory space, the building takes a pseudovertical approach to this skyscraper studio, creating a steady transition from the Hudson River to the towering development to its east: a figurative setback, if you will. The program
derives from the group’s previous analyses of New York skyscrapers (see SLICES), resulting in aquarium, butterfly conservatory, and trash compactor programs. The latter was used as formal operation to intertwine the aquarium and conservatory. These spaces are navigated using a railed elevator system that stops at the varying exhibits of life. The project was submitted to the Evolo Skyscraper Competition in 2018. 02

05 PSEUDOVERTICAL
PSEUDOVERTICAL is comprised of 3 unit types: core, for distribution of visitors, tank, for aquarium space and visitor circulation throughout, and atrium, which provides spatial relief at the building’s center. These units were designed and implemented in CATIA/Digital Project (parametric design software brought to the industry by Pritzker Prize laureate Frank Gehry).

Among our group, I had a particular role in conceptual visioning and design, retrofitting models in CATIA, and developing graphic schemes and drawings. I additionally served as a sort of project manager in terms of our timeline, file management, and priorities. This studio also had the privilege of helping kick start the university’s clay 3D printing processes utilizing its KUKA KR20 robotic arm. This was definitely a trial and error process, but we were happy to experiment and provide lessons-learned for future use.

This project began with an analysis of the intersection between roof typology and overall form in Cincinnati single-family homes. While there were some interesting roof geometries, the volume and base profile remained relatively rectangular, regular, and hidden—of course by land. The Cincinnati Athenaeum reiterates the roles of roof, volume, and base by placing the once hidden
base on the exterior of the building and utilizing the varying roof geometries to inform the rigid interior courtyard. Members of the Athenaeum experience this relationship when inhabiting the bar, design studios, visual art gallery, small performance venue, recording studio, two studio apartments, administration offices, and rooftop viewing.

EXISITNG
The Belden Stratford, formerly known as the Belden Hotel (1922), is an Illinois Landmark that overlooks Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan. The hotel underwent an adaptation to become an apartment building in the 1980’s, which unfortunately compromised many historic elements, such as the cast-iron canopy,

crucial light access to the main lobby space, and a double-height ballroom. I am currently participating in SCB’s renovation, which focuses on restoring these historic elements in tandem with a local historic architect, in addition to revitalizing the residential and landscape elements. 16

My roles on the project are in unit design, construction and presentation drawings, BIM management, and consultant coordination. As shown above, the team and I broke out the unit mix into 3 categories to split up the quality of views or spaces in tandem with the existing conditions, allowing us to value engineer which units receive the highest degree of renovation (green). The blue and red units received a minimal amount of layout redesign, reducing the cost of demolition and rerouting risers.

SLICES
UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI
Fall 2017
Inspired by the 48-story atrium in John Portman’s Marriot Marquis in New York City, these SLICES explore my interest in carving light wells into, and even through, a building. This creates a 19
visual connection between separate programs within, and lights a shared common space. SLICES would later inform the butterfly conservatory element of PSEUDOVERTICAL.

CERAMICS DUBLIN COFFMAN HIGH SCHOOL
2010-2014
Although I’d always been immersed in cooking, sculpting, drawing and the like, my introduction to ceramics really kick-started a serious designbuild mindset. For most of high school, I was 21
part of a time-trial based ceramics competition in central-Ohio called “Feats of Clay,” for which I designed and built our team’s teapot each year and was team captain.

PHOTOGRAPHY 2018 - Present
Photography serves me as an exercise and exploration of composition, light, and precision. I am particularly fascinated with the mechanics and chemistry of film photography.

PROTECTIVE
The B.US Shelter is a design-build done in coordination with parents, students, and administration at Cincinnati Public Schools and The UC Bicentennial Foundation. Its purpose was to prototype a bus shelter to be potentially built in several neighborhoods around Cincinnati to represent the university and serve the community. This was the final phase of a 3-studio sequence: one of urban planning, fine arts, and architecture. After analyzing the
INQUISITIVE
PERCEPTIBLE
past studios’ research, we developed four main goals, requiring that the shelter be inviting, protective, inquisitive, and perceptible. Such goals were achieved in the playful undulation of seating to serve different age groups, a 2.5-sided enclosure for protection and perceptibility, a free library, and for the installation, a fish tank, where the solar battery would reside, powering a display of bus arrival times and an emergency call button. 28
Because most of our time was spent thoroughly researching, diagramming, detailing, and setting up files for customization, the construction process only took a few days. We had plywood CNC-milled and painted, custom metal work done to structure the shelter. It was set up in the DAAP building for our end of the year show.

MY EARLY CONCEPT
My roles were of that in management and design: I had several conceptual schemes of my own, which were later combined with that of other winners in a vote. During research, I was a part of the materials and precedent team, while developing previous research into design goals. My roles in the final build of our design were in rectifying and detailing our design model, setting up milling files, establishing graphic standards, producing drawings, and participating in overall construction. 31

THE REFUGE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI
Spring 2017
33 Calhoun St. Cincinnati, OH 45219 33
Located just off University of Cincinnati’s campus, The Refuge is a luxury apartment complex intended for faculty and staff of the university. The complex includes 22 luxury apartments interwoven with open-air lobbies, a fitness center, and study room. These sit atop a brunch/fine dining restaurant and a 2-story parking garage. Its master plan is representative of the surrounding 3-block context that
hugs the edge of campus by utilizing relationships within the spatial figure-ground. These contextual relationships allow the public to recede from the busy traffic to rehabilitate, find sanctuary, and wait for public transportation. The Refuge mimics these contextual relationships to function similarly, as residents return home. 34
SOLID VOID
PRIVATE SEMI-PRIVATE PUBLIC
THE REFUGE’s form mimics that of its 3-block context separated by streetscape via its 3-tower configuration separated by vertical circulation. Much like the appended spaces off the busy streetscape, every few residential floors includes a fitness center, library, or lounge, appended from the vertical circulation cores. The residents also have access to the sunken southeast gardens for strolling and relaxation, representative of the vegetated and sunken contextual appendages.
