How we as designers have to change in order for design to work effectively on new technologies such as the iphone? (Working title)

Amber Smith Dissertation Tutor Rationale (200 words) My design practice revolves around an investigation into layout with the focus on branding and typography. I am interested in how layout can be manipulated through various print formats as well as how this could be applied to web. Print processes, stock and other processes are increasingly important to my practice.

Statement of Intent (SOI) - (400 words) Print: I am attending the advanced print workshop, which deals with InDesign in more depth, it will teach me how to set up documents ready to be sent out to professional printers. The workshop will also allow me to focus on easier and quicker ways in which to use the program, which in affect will help my design practice allowing me to work more fluidly. As well as the workshops I plan to find out and learn as much about modern printing methods. This will help my design practice, being able to know what I can and cant do explaining to clients what is available and being able to understand and have a dialogue with professional printers. Web: The web session is something that I feel I need to attend as I plan to create my own website and want the ability to make them independently. Gaining knowledge from these web workshops will allow me to know what is needed in designing for screen and web. I think that the sessions will also show me what I can and cant do which will make designing the website offline easier as I will know my constraints. Visiting Professionals: (Industrial and contextual understanding) I plan to use the opportunities of visiting lectures to the full potential using what there experiences and advice to improve and inform my design practice. I hope to create and maintain contacts with relevant professionals, which in turn would benefit my experience and prepare me for when I finish the course.

Typographic and layout contextual knowledge: As the focal point of my design practice is heading towards layout and type I want to broaden my knowledge and understand of both these areas as it will allow me to experiment with different ways to portray the content. I think that the various books on the reading list would be a good start and various type and layout books will help me get to grips with the mechanics and techniques of type and apply them to my style of design, trying and testing the relationship between type and layout across both digital and print formats.

1

Brief 1 Cocktail guide/supplement

Develop and produce a supplement (pull-out) for a broadsheet newspaper that focuses on teaching people how to make cocktails. The supplement can focus on specific cocktails with the idea to promote a cocktail app, which is available with a wider range of cocktails which can be learnt by using the features of the Iphone. (Touch screen, gyro and accelerometer)

3.

Brief 2 Urban Landscape Typeface

Design and develop a typeface on the theme of Architecture and urban landscape within Leeds with the application to screen printed seasonal gift/season cards and wrapping paper. Scope to make the typeface or a word from it into a 3 dimensional model for promotional purposes (Potential point of sale?)

4.

Brief 3 Adopt a word

Develop a new brand identity for the charity Adopt a Word focusing on how the brand works over both web and print. The resolution should be the brand and the range of products stemming from this, which are to include a congratulatory publication for people that subscribe to multiple words. Further development on the brand can include the various products such as the merchandise.

5.

Brief 4 Bar/restaurant

Rebrand an existing bar/restaurant within Leeds focusing on there existing customer base, using this to develop the brand and produce a relevant identity which is unique but something that make the bar stand out. The resolution should be a whole range of products, which come under the identity of the chosen bar. This has scope to link to the cocktail supplement, as it could link in as a promotional piece for the specific bar.
