There’s something strikingly unique about Canada Goose, with its sense of wholesomeness and authenticity, and that something is family. Developed over three generations, Canada Goose is still run by family DNA to this very day. Dani Reiss is the third generation CEO and President of the company. “Every generation had something to contribute,” he says. “My grandfather [Sam Tick] contributed by starting the company and getting us into the garment industry.” His father, David Reiss, joined the company in the 70s. “My dad was an entrepreneurial guy, young and full of Canada Goose as a brand. He also invented a down machine, which got us into the business.” David Reiss’s invention opened up a world of opportunities, providing the company with its expertise, which allowed it to start developing and creating specialist insulated outerwear. You would presume that as a young boy Dani Reiss would aspire to be entrepreneurial like his father; but the truth is that he had other plans in 134

life. “I never wanted to work in this business,” he says, “mainly because I didn’t want my folks to give me a job!” After studying English Literature at The University of Toronto, he intended to travel and lose himself in his passion: writing. He only joined the brand in 1997 with the intention of raising funds for his travel, but 16 years later, he’s still there.

a history or heritage. I think most brands are simulations of real brands for purposes of

Despite Reiss’s determination not to be given a job by his ‘folks’, he’s worked hard for it. “I often worked in the company for Summer jobs, he recalls. “I pretty much did everything from being a receptionist, garbage man, cleaning, packing and shipping. The one thing I didn’t do was actually sell, which I still cannot do…I’m not going to try that. I would probably hurt myself!”

nobody knew about it. Bursting with enthusiasm, youthfulness and new found passion, Reiss set out to make the voice of Canada Goose heard. A writer at heart, he began to shape the brand with a narrative. “I think our brand is very emotional,” he says. “The love I have for writing has contributed a lot to the way we communicate. Within my generation we’ve been very focused on telling the stories behind the brand. What we’ve done is spread the word around the world; we’ve told the story and expanded on it.”

So why did he stay? “I found it was an authentic brand,” Reiss explains. “It was real. A real brand is about reputation, word of mouth and community. A company that was established two years ago is not a real brand; it doesn’t have a reputation,

conquer Everest. As it happens, he was wearing an iconic Canada Goose jacket at the time. Reiss is clearly proud that his family’s company is part of this history, and associated with “the person who was at the very top of their game, the very best in the world and accomplishes things that have never been accomplished before. These People.”

but I’m really proud that we have the real thing.” During his early days at Canada Goose, Reiss realised that what the brand had was a fantastic

One of these stories involves Laurie Skreslet,

Goose People, a concept created alongside the 50th anniversary of the brand in 2007, gathers a community of people that have pursued lifechanging adventures. “It made a lot of sense to tell our story through the stories of other people,” explains Reiss, “how they relate to the world, what they do in the world and how that relates to Canada Goose.” The anniversary also saw the launch of a limited edition book celebrating 50 years of heritage, stories and authenticity, which Reiss describes as “a great testament to who we are.” If giving the brand this much emotional engagement wasn’t enough, Reiss marks one of his greatest achievements as turning Canada Goose into a global apparel brand, sold in over 50 countries worldwide. He also takes pride in the company’s ‘Inspired by Canada, Made in Canada’

ethos. “Owning a Canada goose jacket is like owning a piece of Canada,” he enthuses. “The fact that it’s been made in Canada is inseparable from that.” Reiss further connects the brand to its environment through his work as Chairman of Polar Bears International. “It’s important to align ourselves with things that are unique to us, things that make sense for us,” he says. “PPI is a perfect match. Polar bears are icons of the north and, in a small way, our jackets are also icons of the north.” Canada Goose also has centres in Northern Canada where leftover fabrics, sewing materials and wools are shipped. This allows traditional sewers in communities to utilise these resources to create their own garments. “It’s important for us to build relationships that we have, and reinforce them,” explains Reiss. “This is our original market place. We built our brand there.” It is always admirable when a successful individual dedicates themselves to good causes, but what is so uniquely captivating is the way in which Reiss aligns himself, his brand and these causes seamlessly.

brand Levi’s™, resulting in two jackets and one vest, perfectly combining the design aesthetics of both brands. “It’s a cool collaboration,” says Reiss. “We’re both two old school, authentic companies which are iconic in our own way. We’re both known for making great, durable products. We thought it made sense to work together.” Dani Reiss is a man with great vision, admirable enthusiasm and great understanding. He knows a ‘real’ brand when he sees one. Most of all, he has a real brand and within that he has a voice: a voice that echoes throughout everything his brand does. We hope that Canada Goose will continue to grasp opportunities, develop amazing products and above all…“Free people from the cold.”

The subject of heritage and authenticity does not stop there. Canada Goose took a leap this year with its recent collaboration with legendary denim 135
