Sam Wyly was born in Louisiana and raised in a small town. After getting his MBA from the University of Michigan, he went to Air Force boot camp near San Antonio, Texas. Next, he moved to Dallas, Texas to work as a salesman for IBM. He started his first business venture, the University Computing Company, on the campus of Southern Methodist University. At only 28 years old, he had created his first company. He started the company with $1000 and an idea to provide computing services to universities, oil companies, and military contractors. In 1968, the company went public, which made Wyly a millionaire. This would be the first of six companies Wyly nurtured to valuations over one billion dollars.
