DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY STORAGE SHED Location
Appalachian Trail VA
Program
A storage structure located in the mountains that houses tools necessary for forestry tasks and a compact working space for forest keeping personnel
Architecture
The design takes considerations of circulation, multifunction, and daylight. The building is essentially a cube structure with series of stairs inserted into its apertures. The Stairs not only act as members that lead to the occupiable roof but also shelfs for tool storage. As occupants walk up the stairs, they are asked to turn and rotate their views of the surrounding landscape
Movement Access What is a shed? Its definition and values? What activates the energy of ones encounter with a shed?
-Shelter permanence: sheds are assigned limited values in terms of permanence -One is not expected to experience in a shed the long term qualities of a building normally found in permanent residences such as weathering, discoloration, and decaying of the structure -People move in and out quickly without even the notice of certain functions the shed can perform

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER Location
16 Cornelia Street New York, NY
Program
A MTA Subway Station, a university information center and a studio living space
Architecture
Public, community, and private level of scales are presented within this project. A subway station entrance open to public is built into the basement of the building to bring commuters and visitors into the space. The upper levels are dedicated to NYU campus for information distribution and administrative use. The top levels of the building is a wood platform apartment addition to the building. The use of material and structure shifts as one moves through the space. Grand public concrete stairs shift down to metal community stairs then into cantilevered wooden stairs inside the apartment. The building pays respects to neighboring walls by exhibiting the brickwork behind glazed glass panels.

STRAIT TOWER Location Sound River
Program
- Workstation optimized for data colection - A rest area enough to occupy a single person - Storage for equipments - Cleansing area
Architecture
The strait tower rests on a dynamic landscape with both human and natural forces present. An interpreted axis exists as a divide between these two forces, the tower therefore highlights that line of distinction. The thousand foot path toward the structure marks the sense of anticipation with light halos around the ground floor of the tower. Concrete, heavy and dense material, presents itself with smooth surfaces in contrast with stones in nature, The man made material then finds itself being supported by force in nature allowing us to appreciate the power of nature and experience its dynamics. This project takes movement and axiality into primary concerns while light and structure as elements that contributes to the design language

BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK ARTIST HOUSING Location
334 Furman Street Brooklyn, NewYork
Program
Propose live + work (together or separate) affordable studios for artist along the urban edge of the Brooklyn Bridge Park
Architecture
As a direct response to Mayor Di Blasi’s plan of reshaping the city by building 80,000 new affordable housing units in the next decade, the artist housing project aims to set a precedence and redefine the living style of resident artists. Being a vital piece of landmark off the coast of East River, the Brooklyn Bridge Park brings together a variety of forces and energy including landscape, weather, and human factors into a condensed community that is partitioned by the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. The architectural idea is to emphasize the hierarchy of privacy, community and public under a schematic layout of structures, as well as to define visual and implied axes of energy that challenges the boundary between the residence and the park.
Project Components
-Create a community within the existing context of Brooklyn Bridge Park -Each building within the complex is assigned different functions to highlight the idea of privacy, community and public -Two major axes: one that cuts through the gallery, and the main residence and runs north to south connecting the running trail and Furman street. The other that visually connects the Brooklyn promenade and the park and carves out community space for the residents -The units are modular units that are stacked on top and offset from each other to resonate with the idea of individuality and collectivism -Stair towers are separated from the main structures and made vertical access possible
-Private -Community -Public

The Living
11
The artist housing redefines the way of living and condenses the living unit into essential components. Residents are expected to have at least 300 square foot of living/ work space. The artists are to enter into their living unit through the stair towers, he/she then steps onto a slight offset pathway created by the offsetting structure which leads to their living units. Roof gardens are placed in front of every unit with syncopated seatings available for the residents to come out of their units and enjoy the view of the waterfront.

ELLINGTON POLICE STATION Location
636 Florida Ave NW Washington, DC 20001
Program
A police sub-station including spaces for reception and waiting, offices and desks, meeting and interrogations, evidence and file storage, detention and other services.
Architecture
This project for a police station is a proposal that envisions the future of the relationship between law enforcement and communities, countering the surveillance state with the gaze of the people. With contemporary issues of common misconceptions toward policemen as a platform, this police station aspires to be a space shared by local metropolitan police department and the general public. It’s intended for a cause of bring people together through interactions with music, a significant part of the local cultural heritage.
Project Components
-A community oriented complex comprised of a police sub-station and a music practice space -The two buildings are woven together -The building is situated at the center of a historical complex bounded by the Howard Theater, Duke Ellington Plaza, and former Dunbar theater making it essential to respect the rich musical and cultural values of the area. - With the three sharp edges of the site being transformed into public plazas, a more subtle and welcoming transition of the city into the complex is created. Conversations and social interactions are encouraged by providing open spaces that are shielded from the noise of the streets.

The building carries two major languages that are direct reflections of the major elements of music: rhythm and melody. Rhythm is presented by a series of repeating vertical elements of the police space that are aligned with the axis of the city streets where as melody is introduced as an meandering circular movement within the musical space.

Nostalgia (Undergraduate Thesis)
Exploration
In an attempt to recollect some of my childhood memories of my hometown, I began to examine the alleyways I grew up in, not only their physical components but also the cultural values they carry. My findings lead up to a common issue that is shared by many recently developed cities: What do we do when our older communities are being devoured by the new? Social and physical boundaries within the urban fabric forces a society to reexamine its values which directly impacts its image as a city and the lifestyle of its urban dwellers. Using my Hometown, Wenzhou, as a platform, I intent to dissolve the boundaries between the old and new through various means of urban design interventions that reflects the spatial qualities of alleyway and to create a new urban ground that aims to slow down the ever so fast city life...
