ROKYTKA ROARS ACROSS THE MEADOWS Mendel university in Brno Project Studio III Supervisor Iveta Koprivova individual work © 2020
Let me tell you a story that took place behind a closed door during a global pandemic. I met a girl online. Her name was Rokytka. At first, she came across as a successful and cheerful individual, that is full of life. A true one of a kind. She had strong social and environmental connections. I learned, she even prepared the ground and became one of the founders of several communities in her area. 2019 But once I started getting to know her better, I realized it wasn‘t all fun and games. She brought up one particular story that gave me pause. There was this community just outside of the Prague city center. Rokytka was a celebrity there. People built their houses only to make sure they can be close to her or even get a glace of her from their window. And she, in return, was always there for them. „I would help the neighbors built their businesses, provide them with resources and even protect them from their enemies,“ she says, „I spent a great deal of time with the children on their island farm. It was a delight.“
ROKYTKA ROARS ACROSS THE MEADOWS
1842
But somewhere along the way, something happened. People stopped understanding and respecting her for what she was. They started crossing the boundaries. As she describes it: „Well, I only needed some space, I think we all do. So I had to speak out.“ But instead of being heard, she became a complicated burden. For the lack of understanding, people even started being scared of her. She became a threat. Those, who‘d enjoyed her company, were now building walls to protect themselves from her. And Eventually, they buried her underground. This project is about understanding the connections between a river and a city. It also explores the possibilities of planning without visiting being able to visit the site.
1842
The area is located in Prague 8 - Liben, Czechia, at the crossing of two important green corridors, namely the Vltava and Rokytka axes.
The urban structure of the area was previously shaped mainly by watercourses – Vltava and Rokytka river (accompanied by a Horse Chesnut alley).
The river has an inseparable connection to the landscape dominants such as Liben Chateau, Löwit‘s Mill, and the Svet Palace.
There used to be a Gothic fortress on the site of today‘s Liben Chateau, functionally directly connected to the Rokytka river.
It is necessary to perceive the banks as an interconnected sequence of sensually grasping diverse environments, a mosaic of places.
By tying the stream to concrete, Rokytka has also become distant from the people. It disappeared from the image of the location.
2019
At the end of the 19th cen., Liben joins the capital as the eighth city district and becomes the center of industry in the northeast of Prague.
The 2019
2019
In 1909, the Rokytka river is straightened and buried under a concrete hatch to form the Elsnic Square. This led to an increase in flood events.
Löwit mill, which had been operating between the 16th– 19th centuries, was decommissioned only after extensive regulation of the Vltava riverbed.
The original Svet embankment bore its name until 1947, although it lost its function as early as 1909 when the Rokytka River was buried underground.
A weekly market tradition is connected with the place. Today, market events take place by the Löwit mill but deserve a space for development.
After the Rokytka burial, the central point of Liben -the Elsnic Square- was to be created. However, the public space has never fulfilled its potential.
2019
There is a vacant plot of land adjacent to the Svet (World‘s) Palace. Therefore, the block urban structure of the area lacks an edge.
The Svet (World‘s) Palace is an icon of Liben. The former glory has disappeared today, and the whole complex has fallen into disrepair.
The ideological content of public buildings and their significance in the urban structure should be supported by their public spaces.
There is a busy road in front of the palace. It prevents comfortable movement for pedestrians and cyclists.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the socalled children‘s farm took place in Liben Island. It was an initiative of an alternative educational project.
The separation of the city and the food production is a significant issue of today. In Liben, it was addressed almost a century ago.
The area around Long Island Bar is a space for site-specific installations. However, the rest of the peninsula is in a state of disrepair today.
Temporality can also be used to initiate changes, which in turn can lead to a permanent adjustment of the public space.
A key element of the city is especially the streets, not the roads. For pedestrians, a sense of security and safety is essential.
Quality criteria for pedestrians are the ability to speak and listen in public spaces. The noise map shows a significant noise load around Elsnic Square.
The new development complexes are cut off from the Liben center, thus limiting the cohesion of the local community.
Spaces must also provide aesthetic experiences and pleasant sensory perceptions. Great architecture, design, quality materials, trees, and plants.

# 1 BE YOURSELF Widening and softening of the Rokytka riverbed brought the possibility of water infiltration and slowing of flow. Islands in the middle of the riverbed are preserved for historically significant alleys. Deadwood is placed in the trough.
CONCEPT
#2 NEVER FORGET YOUR OLD FRIENDS Recreation of the important connections in the area – Liben Castle, Löwit‘s Mill, and the former Elsnic Palace and following embankment.
# 3 YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO OFFER Creation of various areas connected to the river from different height levels. Shores change their character concerning the environment through which they pass.
#4 THERE‘S A WHOLE WORLD WAITING FOR YOU Creating a representative public space in front of the Svet (World‘s) Palace with a cafe at the river level. To complete the edge of the square, a building with a public courtyard and a living parterre is added.
An area for urban agriculture focused on education and a place for informal artistic activities.
#6 SHARE A CONNECTION A connection between the new and the old districts of Liben to make it possible for pedestrians and cyclists to move freely between them. Other pathways are made at ground level and alternatively also at the river level.

PROPOSAL
The busy road is redirected. The original road is limited to 30 km / h and serves residents only.
The river is once again approaching the Löwit mill. The Chateau restores the fortress-like impression.
By removing the concrete hatch in the area of Elsnic Square, its original character of the embankment is restored.
The Rokytka riverbed is widened to enables better water infiltration. This measure allows for more reliable flood protection.

COMPOSITION
MODULE THEORY
The area is located in the southeast of the Czech Republic, in the South Moravian Region. It is part of the LedniceValtice area, which is considered to be the largest composed landscape in Europe and since 1996 has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Besides, it is protected as a part of the Lower Moravia Biosphere Region.
Two important compositional axes pass through the area of interest. The first of them the Valtice-Lednice axis - connects the Chateau of the two mentioned municipalities through the European protected Bezruc Alley. The second compositional axis connects the historical building of the Lednice train station with the chateau greenhouse through the main axis of the historic parterre of the chateau garden.
The composition of the northern part of the area is historically formed by individual bosquets lined with a ha-ha wall. In the southern part, there used to be a tree nursery. There are two modules, one coming from the chateau chapel, the other from the courtyard next to it. These modules are repeated in different parts of the formal parterre.
PROPERTY RELATIONS There are two land owner in the area - real estate owned by the municipality of Lednice, which includes five plots in the south. These also fall under protection as National Cultural Real Estate Monuments and Cultural Real Estate Monuments. Three plots north of Slovácká Street are owned by the state.

LOCATION
3.2
B.
The location is divided into two basic compositional units Formal Garden (0.1) and Lednice Park (0.2), which are divided by Slovácká Street. In the formal garden, there is the Arboretum (1.1), the Venetian Fountain (2.1), and the Pinetum (3.1) . There are also three green rooms in the Lednice park, the so-called Park by the Liberty Memorial (1.2), Lednice Garden (2.2), and Outdoor Sports Ground (3.2).
ROAD NETWORK
C. D.
An important element of the composition is the strictly perpendicular axes of the road network. The formal garden and the Lednice park are connected by two basic axes of the area, namely the Valtice-Lednice axis (A.) and the railway station-greenhouse axis (B.). Important minor axes are connecting the individual green rooms of the formal garden (C.), the axis of Slovácká Street (D.) continuing to the village center, and a bus stop on the other side(E.).

The principle of two modules is applied in the whole area. These modules were originally repeated only in the formal garden. We transferred this principle to the Lednice park and created a basic modular grid - the center of the composition. This is linked to the historically documented formal spatial composition of the tree nursery located in this area.
SK7
CREATION OF SPACE USING VEGETATION The general principle of working with vegetation in the area is the positive (full) and negative (empty) spaces. In the formal garden, the positive space is reflected in the green rooms of the arboretum and pineta. Here it creates a specific microclimate for the local assortment of plants. In contrast to it, there is the negative space of the Venetian Fountain, which looks open and clear. In the part of the Lednice park, the limited negative space of all three green rooms is used.
PROGRAM The main program in the area is recreation and education of the inhabitants of the Lednice village. In the formal garden, the education and recreation program is provided by the collections of coniferous and deciduous trees, as well as the historical area of the Venetian Fountain. In the Lednice park, the program is mainly recreational – a playground, sports ground, and fitness area. Also in the form of a residential lawn and a community building.
