Come celebrate California’s rich maritime history and our connection to the ocean
The Festival Adventure Pass gets you access to three main areas of the festival. Ocean Institute’s Main Campus, Maddie James Seaside Learning Center and Historical Wharf for tall ship tours and Lil’ Lads Landing.
Ocean Institute’s Main Campus Activities: 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Explore the legend and lore of Ships vs. Sea Monsters. Learn to navigate like the sailors did to escape the dangers at sea, join in a treasure hunt for sea monsters and new ships alike, pan for gold when you make it to port, tell your tales through scrimshaw, learn the history of whaling, visit local aquaria and touch tanks and so much more. Don’t miss story time! Pirate and mermaid story times throughout the day (see schedule).

Festival Adventure Pass
Ticket Valid Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Maddie James Seaside Learning Center and Historical Wharf – Ship Tours: 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Ship tours close early to prepare for Cannon Battles. Festival Tall Ships: Spirit of Dana Point, Curlew, Irving Johnson, Exy Johnson, Bill of Rights.
Lil Lad’s Landing: 10 a.m.–4 p.m. Pirate obstacle course, festival games, challenges, and opportunities to win prizes, face painting, crafts, and more!

Mermaid Breakfast
$70 per person
Saturday and Sunday- 8:15am -10:00am
• Join us for breakfast and dine with mermaids while being treated with a brunch board provided by Maison Café. Experience includes a dazzling mermaid swim show, story time, and photo opportunity. This is an experience you and your family will not want to miss! Festival Adventure Pass included in your ticket.

Mermaid Tea by the Sea
$70 per person
Saturday and Sunday- 1:15 pm – 3:00 pm
• You are cordially invited to join us for an afternoon Mermaid Tea by the Sea! Finger sandwich, scones, and variety of teas provided by Los Rios Tea House. Experience includes dazzling mermaid swim show, story time and photo opportunity. This is an experience you and your family will not want to miss! Festival Adventure Pass included in your ticket.

Mermaid Swim Show
$35 per person
Saturday and Sunday- 10:15, 11:45
• Join us for a dazzling and interactive Mermaid Swim Show. Perfect for kids of all ages who want to embark on an adventure and learn how to be ocean stewards! Ticket includes mermaid swim show, photo opportunity, and Festival Adventure Pass. An experience you and your family will not want to miss!

Cap’n Jack’s Pirate School
$35 per person
Saturday and Sunday- 11:15 am and 3:15 pm
• Festival Adventure Pass included with your ticket.
• “School” is back in session: Cap’n Jack’s Pirate School for Lil’ Scallywags! Join our local favorite Cap’n Will, as he trains you on what it means to be a pirate. Do you have what it takes to become a master of maritime or will you walk the plank?

Our waterfront campus is adjacent to a State Marine Conservation Area and encompasses exhibits, science labs and a live collection of 1,100 species native to the California Pacific Coast. Fun Fact: American Pride sailed the waters of Georges Bank and the Grand Banks as a fishing trawler. American Pride operated as a charter boat out of Maine for 10 years before she sailed to her new home in Long Beach, CA.

Fun Fact: With 28 years of service at the Ocean Institute, she has had over half a million students step aboard for educational experiences on the water.

• Tickets: $300
Dress up like a Pirate or Mermaid, polish your sleuthing skills, and immerse yourself in the magic and mystery at Ocean Institute’s 2nd Annual Pirate & Mermaid Ball! The celebration takes place at Ocean Institute on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The event, part of the institute’s Maritime Festival, is a murder mystery masquerade featuring a gourmet sit-down dinner, silent and live auctions, paddle-raise, live music, dancing, and—the focus of the night—solving the murder mystery. It’s a whodunit designed to raise funds for ocean education.
