ExpErt’s CornEr How To Choose A Good Remodeling Contractor Tips To Help You Find A Reputable Company For Your Project Hiring an honest, capable Contractor to handle your remodeling project is essential for avoiding a disastrous result. But how can you check out the prospects before you hire them? It’s not as difficult as you might think. Here are some important steps that can help you avoid hiring the wrong Contractor: 1. Check with the California State Contractor’s License Board regarding the license number for all prospective Contractors. The website is www.cslb.ca.gov All Home Improvement projects costing more than $500 must be performed by a California State Licensed Contractor. 2. Verify that the license is valid and in good standing. Some scam artists think you will not check to find out if their license was suspended or if they really have one. 3. Verify that the license number on the

Contractor’s business card or advertisement is the correct classification. For example, you would not want to hire someone to do Plumbing if they are only licensed to do Electrical. A General Contractor’s license (B Classification) is required when the project includes two or more unrelated building trades or crafts. 4. Confirm that the business name on the Contractor’s License Board information is the same as the name of the contracting Company you are going to hire. The State requires this and can be a red flag if they do not match. 5. Make sure the Contractor has both Worker’s Compensation and General Liability insurance. Reputable Contractors who carry these coverages will be happy to show you certificates proving that they have policies currently in force. If you

hire someone without these coverages, you may be liable if someone is injured during your project or if anything gets damaged. 6. Evaluate the Sales Representative. Was he/she on time for the appointment? Was he/she courteous and professional? Was he/she knowledgeable about the products and services you discussed? Do you feel comfortable working with him or her for a project that might take several

weeks or months? 7. Make sure the Contractor is willing to get all required permits and inspections for your project. Some scam artists try to talk the Homeowner out of getting permits because they don’t want the City Building Inspectors checking their work. If you would like more information on this process or would like to get an estimate please feel free to contact Martin directly.
