Our Story Sanctuary Interior Design Build began with designer Hillary Staats. Hillary fell in love with design from the age of ten and has wanted to make spaces beautiful ever since. She first chose the career to share her passion with others. She began working for other designers, but six years ago began reinventing herself and her outlook on the field. The name â&#x20AC;&#x153;Sanctuaryâ&#x20AC;? refers to the home. As her view of design was evolving, Hillary realized that she wanted to help her clients make their homes feel safe, secure, and comfortable. She began to design by asking for as much client input as possible to be sure that their vision of their perfect home could be realized.

What makes our design process stand out is that we take the mystery out of interior design. While others use their own style and vision to design a space, our approach is to design for our clients in their own style. “Interior design” can sound intimidating, but our process is very casual. We like to work closely with our clients to help them expose their inner aesthetic and enhance it in their homes. This approach allows us to design in a number of different styles: from traditional to modern and everything in between. We also ensure that our clients understand exactly where their money is going. We like to explain how we are spending our clients money and have an open dialogue about it to keep them involved in every step of the process.

Hillary Staats, the owner of and creative design force behind Sanctuary Interior Design Build, is one of the Washington D.C. metropolitan areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most vivacious interior designers. Her esteemed design firm offers the highest quality of service and products to a discriminating clientele. Hillary cultivated Sanctuary Interior Design Buildâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s reputation for top-tier service and exceptional design consultation via her ability to manage the entire design process, from blueprint to completion, and through her commitment to ensuring that every detail of each project is implemented to the absolute satisfaction of the client.

Hillary has been creating beautiful spaces and designing rooms and parties for her impressive roster of clients for over two decades. She launched her career after receiving a degree in Interior Design in 1987 and going on to work at several interior design firms in Great Falls and McLean. Hillary’s eclectic style and impeccable taste have lead her to collaborate with a diverse array of clientele—from upscale, luxury homeowners purchasing furniture from White House vendors, to those simply seeking to add special touches to their living spaces for comfort and style. Ever the avid globetrotter, Hillary regularly spends time in New York and London, and frequently travels overseas, and at times with clients, to seek out new and interesting products from a plethora of international vendors. Whether she’s in Turkey or France, Hillary is always searching for inspiration, and she is passionate about finding special pieces and accents that she knows will make the perfect impact in a particular space. In May 2010 Hillary proudly opened the doors of Sanctuary Interior Design Build, thrilled to be able to share her 20-plus years of design experience and her passion for turning clients’ visions into reality. She considers her rigorous work ethic and innate sense of integrity to be the cornerstones of her success, and credits both of these key character traits for her ability to foster meaningful and long-lasting client relationships. Hillary and her team takes great pride in her meticulous attention to detail and—for her—nothing is more satisfying than helping to bring a client’s exact design vision to life. “Every client is extremely important to me,” Hillary says, “which is why I do everything I can to make each one feel as though he or she is my only client.” Born in Virginia as a fourth generation Washingtonian, Hillary currently resides in Vienna, Virginia with her husband, Tommy, and their four children. In her spare time Hillary indulges in her other passions—gardening, cooking and making everything beautiful in her own sanctuary.

Our Team Joey Waroquier - Interior Designer

Joey’s passion for interior design started at a young age when he would spend his evenings helping his mom create knockout displays for her flower shop after finishing up his (rather hum drum) corporate day job. His passion for design also spilled over to home as he spent several years constantly redecorating his bedroom. Now, as a professional interior designer with over 10 years of experience in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, Joe has realized his passion isn’t just about beautiful design – it’s about helping his clients create a home, a place where they love to live, build memories and share their lives with family and friends.

Joey’s flexible design style ranges from transitional to European and was influenced by spending his summers in Paris since he was a young boy. As a voracious traveler, Joey pulls inspiration from the cultures and the people he meets in cities all over the world, such as Prague, Santiago and Jakarta. Still, his favorite city, and the place where you’re likely to find him most often looking for new pieces and styles from his growing network of international vendors, will always be Paris. (Actually, if he could do it, he’d probably move in to the Louvre.) The energy and enthusiasm Joe brings to every project for every client is evident from the moment you meet him. Joe’s greatest strength, however, is his ability to listen. Joe listens to what every client says and tells him so he understands you as a person and how you live. That strength, coupled with the depth of his design experience, is what allows Joe to create beautiful homes and spaces – and why his clients continue to work with him year after year. “When clients seek out Sanctuary, they’re looking for help and solutions for their home. I want to help them and am always amazed and impressed by the trust our clients place in us. I constantly learn from my clients and peers alike – and that’s what makes my job so much fun.” Born in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Joe currently lives in Vienna, Virginia and spends his free time exploring the area, cooking, eating, reading, playing football and rugby, gardening, entertaining friends…and planning his next trip.
