ceo’s Welcome to Sandals Style, Your Guide to Caribbean Living – an inside look at the roots, culture, attitude and way of life that makes the Caribbean what it is. For almost 30 years, my family and I have operated some of the most luxurious resorts throughout the Caribbean.
So,
when you are looking for the very best Caribbean experience, you come to the people that know the Caribbean the best— Sandals Resorts. The Caribbean is our home. My family and I have been swimming and fishing in these crystal-clear waters and enjoying all the simple pleasures of island life for generations. We are the Caribbean; we know and love everything about our slice of paradise and can’t wait to share it with you! Island living is about a different pace, a sunny attitude and enjoying the little things, and of course, “liming” (chilling out). No matter how you choose to spend your time here, whether soaking up the sun on a perfect white-sand beach; exploring the rich history and traditions, the exotic beauty and adventure; or meeting the warm and caring people smiling at every corner, you’ll soon find out what makes this region so alluring. I know this magazine will capture the essence of Caribbean living and allow you to escape and bring “liming” into your daily life wherever that may be. As a native son of Jamaica, I’ve soaked in the island vibes my entire life and learned that some things are worth taking time out for—a gorgeous sunset, a place where the fish are biting, a gathering of friends where the beer is cold and the dominoes are hot. Sandals Style, Your Guide to Caribbean Living—this is how I grew up and how I continue to live today. I hope to pass on our way of life through the stories in this magazine, so that you too can enjoy this lifestyle. This is our Caribbean; it is our home. We invite you to come share it with us.

chairman’s Spending time with the people you love is among life’s greatest pleasures, but busy days make this easy to forget. Recently, I had the good fortune to be reminded again on a fabulous fishing trip in Port Antonio, Jamaica, where my family and some marvelous old friends joined me. We were in pursuit of marlin, that enormous fish of lore, prized by big-game fishermen as the pinnacle of the sport. It takes a precise hand, patience and cooperation to reel in a marlin, but it’s a thrilling experience and another reason to love the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. All fishermen dream of the big one, the greatest one, the one that got away. For 30 years I have been living my dream–providing the most memorable vacation experience for two people in love, bar none. Through precise hand, patience and cooperation, we have been perfecting the Luxury Included® vacation, giving couples more than they could ever dream of. From zero-entry pools with swim-up pool bars serving signature cocktails, to the most lavish suites with butler service, to some of the most crystal-clear waters and whitesand beaches, our resorts truly make couples’ wishes come true. In this premier issue of Sandals Style, Your Guide to Caribbean Living, I am proud to share some of our latest developments, which I hope you will enjoy reading about. From the simply beautiful island of Saint Lucia where we plan to unveil the first ever, over-the-water suites in 2012, to the Beautiful by Nature islands of Turks & Caicos where we’ve debuted luxury two-bedroom suites to meet the specific needs of today’s families, we’ve left no stone unturned. And, then, of course, there’s Lady Martha. Our joint venture with America’s style icon Martha Stewart, which brings alluring destination wedding themes to life with Sandals® Weddings by Martha Stewart™. Last, but certainly not least, there’s Island Routes Caribbean Adventure Tours. They offer visitors the ultimate in authentic Caribbean destination experiences, like ziplining through the highest tree tops, and the chance to meet extraordinary people from the most vibrant places in the world. I hope you enjoy Sandals Style, Your Guide to Caribbean Living and I thank you for choosing Sandals and Beaches Resorts. As Caribbean natives, we know that the most thrilling times are the ones spent in the company of those we love. So whether you’re traveling with the love of your life, family, friends, or all of the above, making memories is what life is all about. There’s certainly no better catch in the sea! The Hon. hen painting their houses, Bahamians draw inspiration from Nature’s big show Perhaps the only rival to the vivid blues and greens of the Bahamian waters are the colorful hues that decorate Bahamian architecture. From the classic creamy pale Nassau Pink that adorns government houses, to the bright shades of fuchsia and orange that pop up in the most unexpected of places, the colors fascinate visitors. Bahamians, on the other hand, don’t even notice what may seem like unlikely color combinations and shades because they have become a natural part of their daily experience. Colors have a way of creating an identity and Bahamians are not afraid to shout out loud when it comes to how they paint their buildings. The color of Bahamian buildings can be roughly divided into two periods. The first period lasted until the early Seventies and is represented by a much more muted palette. Homes were usually painted a lighter or pastel shade of pink, blue, yellow or green. Nassau Pink is still heavily used in buildings throughout the Bahamas today and is the traditional color for the Houses of Parliament in Nassau. The story

wadadli Antigua
Wadadli is a refreshing pale lager named after the original Amerindian word for the island. Released in 1993, Wadadli is the flagship beer of the Antigua Brewery. It has a light golden color and a full, bitter-sweet taste. The distinctive green bottle and stand-out label make this one hard to miss. In Antigua, there may be “365 beaches for every day of the year,’’ but there’s only one beer and that’s Wadadli!
kalik
Bahamas Throughout the islands of the Bahamas, the favorite is the laid- back Kalik beer. The name is derived from the famous cultural festival “Junkanoo,” which is known for colorful costumes, resounding rhythmic beats and the irresistible sound of the cowbell shaking, “Kalik, kalik, kalikin!” Brewed from some of the finest malt and hops at the Commonwealth Brewery since 1988, this supremely mellow lager has received no fewer than four gold medals from the World Selection in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 2001. Try one (or a few) and you’ll understand why the locals lovingly boast that “It’s a Bahamian ting!”

A
source of national pride, Caribbean brews reflect the unique heritage of the islands
red stripe Jamaica
Red Stripe was first brewed in 1928 by Desnoes & Geddes Ltd, to give the locals an island beer they could be proud to call their own. Today, thanks to its amazing drinkability and reggae-inspired mystique, Red Stripe is arguably the most recognizable Caribbean beer in the world. It is certainly one of the Caribbean’s most decorated beer brands, having won numerous prestigious awards including 11 gold medals at the annual Monde Selection. The name apparently comes from the red stripe found on the pants of the Jamaican police uniform, but, not unlike the beer itself, its exact origin has some intrigue and mystery. Despite its distinctly squat stature and unassuming, dark brown bottle, this is a giant among Caribbean beers.
piton
Saint Lucia
“La Bière Sent Lisi’’ (The Beer of Saint Lucia) was launched by Windward and Leeward Brewery Ltd in 1992. The launch coincided with a period of heightened national pride as Derek Walcott, a native Saint Lucian, had just been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Saint Lucian pride in Piton is well justified, as it is a multiple award winner with a silver medal in the Monde Selection International Beer Competition in Brussels, Belgium in 1993 and a prestigious gold medal at the Monde Selection in France in 1994. With a name that evokes images of the majestic volcanic peaks of the Pitons, the brand is an indelible part of Saint Lucian life.
25
turks head Turks & Caicos
In the Turks and Caicos, the local potion is named after the indigenous Turks Head cactus that grows on the islands. Luckily, the cactus is on the label only and is not an ingredient in this simple, crisp and exquisitely refreshing beer! Turks Head Brewery on Providenciales has produced Turks Head Beer since 2001 and, if you’re lucky enough to visit, you do not want to miss out on sampling this slightly sweet and floral brew.
carib lager Trinidad & Tobago
With consistently high ratings in both taste and refreshment, Trinidad’s Carib Lager has been the flagship beer of the Carib Brewery since 1950. Carib is one of the most widely available beers in the islands—popular during festivals, concerts and sporting events throughout the Caribbean—thanks to its light citrus flavor and smooth, rounded finish. This beer is flavorful and fuller in body than many lagers and has a playful sweetness that truly captures the Caribbean spirit. One sip and you’ll understand that down here, “a beer is a Carib!” As you continue your journey of island discovery, bear in mind that Caribbean beers are typically stronger concoctions than what you might be used to and, as with any alcohol, there can be a price to pay for too much fun in the sun. Drink and enjoy responsibly. Cheers!

Here, every year 400 million pairs of sustainably-produced Havaianas, in 600 vibrant shades and 16 different styles, are molded to perfection from a secret rubber formula—creating flip-flops that embody the sizzle of Brazilian culture. Not only seen in the stylish enclaves of Rio and Sao Paulo, where Havaianas have gained cult status, these flip-flops have been spotted around the globe, including in celebrity goody bags at the Oscars. The toe cleavages of stars such as David Beckham and Angelina Jolie have been photographed in this stylish minimum footwear.
32
And because of their popularity, many attempts have been made over the years to imitate Havaianas flip-flops. So, for newcomers to the brand, the company introduced a hologram sticker in 2005 on the reverse of the swing tag as an official seal of authenticity. There is no age or gender distinction when it comes to Havaianas; these flip-flops with beach appeal also include an uber-trendy collection that rates highly in the cute stakes for babies and toddlers in a range of colors and styles. Havaianas also teamed up with iconic crystal jewelers Swarovski to produce a crystal-encrusted flip-flop for women who appreciate bling. In 2009, when Vanessa Taylor and Andre Steiner, president of Walk Good Caribbean, the exclusive distributor of Havaianas for the region, launched their first concession in the gift shop at the Luxury Included® Sandals Montego Bay, an embossed Jamaican flag (exclusive to Havaianas, Jamaica) was added to the V-strap, and the sandals quickly became a favorite with Jamaicans and vacationers alike. Today, Havaianas—“unofficial footwear of the Caribbean, officially the best rubber sandals in the world’’—can be purchased at Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts throughout the Caribbean. If ever there was a brand that truly lived up to its slogan…well, you’re probably picking out a pair right now.

more than 100 times, 50 times, 40 times and every time they book they ask for me– ‘Is Daddy Stone still there? Tell him I’m coming for my kiss.’ We treat them like family, people love that.” It was in 1981 that Butch Stewart personally headhunted Stone from a rival resort in Montego Bay. “In that first two weeks, me, Butch and five waiters, who left the other resort when they heard I was leaving, we all sit down and order everything for the restaurant and Butch was a man who likes to advertise, so he put the Sandals logo on everything. Within three months everything was gone—the glasses and plates, anything with a Sandals logo disappeared, that’s how it all started. I like the man from then, he didn’t make a fuss, we just buy everything again.” Stone comes with a rare quality from a bygone era. He leans forward and smiles. “When I left my job, the owner call me and offer me more money and a housing allowance and a car, I tell him no way, I mek a promise to Butch Stewart and I’m sticking to it.” After just five years, success was theirs. “Butch calls me and say, ‘We’ve done it, Daddy, Sandals has been named the number one, all-inclusive resort in the world,’ so with that we continued doing what we do best—giving good service.” Twenty-three years after that call from Butch Stewart, Daddy Stone received another phone call that marked an equally important milestone in his career. “The man ask me is this Robert Stone, so I say ‘yes.’ He said, ‘but you have a middle name? Are you the Robert Edward ‘Daddy’ Stone?’ The man was from King’s House. I knew then Butch had something to do with this.” In August 2008, Jamaica honored Robert Stone; he was awarded the country’s Order of Distinction for devoting more than 55 years of service to the hospitality industry. “On the day of the ceremony when I was handed my award, Butch just get up and left his friends and walk over to me and hugged me. He say ‘you’re the best, Daddy Stone.’ They were words I will never forget.”
Daddy Stone, embraced by guests, lives by the theme “Love is all you need.’’

his Italian restaurant exudes luxury and romance and what better than the Saint Lucian sunset to set the mood

The great thing about Sandals Resorts is that there is inherent romance—this is what the place was literally designed for. However, there are some locations that are dripping in it, from the ambiance to the sensuality of the food. Armando’s Italian restaurant at Sandals Regency La Toc is just such a spot. The place channels the charm of Renaissance-era Italy from the moment you approach the entrance. It is located above the Sunset Bluff pool, tucked behind a waterfall cascading into the pool below. There are tables available on the balcony, so that you can drink in the beauty of the view, as early evening reservations almost guarantee an expanse of ocean awash in the glow of the sunset. The exterior may be the ideal setting for sought-after romance, but inside is serious competition. The thick mahogany doors are thrown back and the brocade drapes are pulled aside to welcome you into the intimate seating area, with tables and banquettes artfully grouped between Roman columns. Dusty rose walls and crystal chandeliers reflect the evening light, accented by the glow of candles that highlight a lover’s blush so beautifully. The menu features the traditional old-world favorites, as well as a few modern Italian surprises. You can choose to start your meal with the Tuscan-style antipasti bar, bursting with roasted peppers, bruschetta, pepperoncini, marinated artichoke hearts

When world champion sprinter Usain Bolt became the fastest man on earth at the Beijing Olympics (despite an untied left shoelace), he also propelled the lowly yam out of obscurity. In the agricultural lands of Trelawny, found in northwest Jamaica, and where Bolt was born, the yellow yam reigns supreme. They even hold an annual Yam Festival where 450-pound monster yams are displayed. “It’s definitely the Trelawney yam,’’ said Wellesley Bolt of his son’s record-breaking success, which dramatically heightened

Central to Creole cuisine and prized in every kitchen throughout the Caribbean, yam is rich in fiber, vitamin C and potassium and can also be stored for up to six months without refrigeration. It is incredibly versatile and creative Jamaicans have even come up with a yam wine. When Sandals Style, Your Guide to Caribbean Living challenged Austrian chef extraordinaire Walter Staib to create five yellow yam recipes, he delivered unpretentious food fused with the loveliest flavors of the Caribbean. And he did it all for you to enjoy!

It’s Our Promise... • TO EDUCATION • TO COMMUNITY • TO OUR ENVIRONMENT
The promise of the Caribbean community is fulfilled every time a child learns to read, when a new community center opens its doors, and when our neighbors come together to preserve and protect our natural resources. That’s why The Sandals Foundation has made a commitment to investments that create a positive and sustainable impact on the lives of the people who comprise the Caribbean community, and that protect the habitat of this paradise. Working together, with our partners we’re able to reach our goals that empower people to reach their potential while preserving and nurturing our unique surroundings. We promise to make a difference…and we invite you to join us.

In the bristling heat of an Antiguan afternoon, Kathy Tyson, an eighth grade teacher from New York, catches my eye as she sits alone in the spacious third-floor lobby of Sandals Grande Antigua Resort & Spa. She stands to greet me and is framed in sunlight from head to toe. She’s just one of a number of people with a social conscience inspired to spend their vacations doing something for others. “I can’t stress enough the importance of reading with children,’’ she said. “To me, that’s the greatest gift you can give anyone.” In 2009, Kathy and her husband Roy attended a guest reunion event at Sandals Grande Antigua. It was an elegant evening of splendid food and entertainment. When Gerald Christ, the resort’s general manager, thanked the returning guests for their loyalty, he urged them to leave behind the books they had finished reading, as a donation to the Sandals Foundation, the charitable arm of the resort company which was partnering with Antigua’s new national library. For Tyson, it was the next stage of a beautiful relationship. “A little bell went off in my head and I said this is a great idea and I decided there and then to partner

Those who search for that true experience of a lifetime, the one thing they must do before they die, can find it at Dolphin Cove–the Caribbean’s number one attraction. What can be more magical than swimming with the one you love while making friends with the world’s most fascinating creature, the dolphin? The fascination with these amazing gifts of nature flows from the days of the explorers, who all had stories of dolphins rescuing sailors or ships in trouble. With their engaging smiles and undeniable intelligence, dolphins continue to attract universal love and admiration. Several couples have remarked that after participating in their dolphin interaction, they have never felt such closeness, an unspoken bond. Be prepared to feel the urge to seal your romance, as there have been several spontaneous marriage proposals–and who could possibly refuse a proposal made in such a fairytale setting with dolphins as the witnesses! The spirit of romance at Dolphin Cove has not gone unnoticed by their star residents, the dolphins. These dolphins are reproducing every year, a testament of their health and happiness at this amazing property. You are almost certain to see the newest addition to the Dolphin Cove family on a visit to this tropical paradise. “Life changing”–that’s how visitors describe the Dolphin Cove experience. Being close to these mammals is the perfect blend of excitement and relaxation. As one guest remarked, “Every

Despite no hotel experience, Stewart approached this business with a simple philosophy that has been his guiding principle: exceed expectations. “We really didn’t know the hotel business when we purchased the resort,” says Stewart, “but we understood that to be successful, we had to find out what people truly wanted, give it to them and in doing so, exceed their expectations.” Stewart never laid claim to starting the allinclusive,

please the guests captured the imagination of couples all over the world. Sandals Resorts became their “home away from home” and the company an iconic brand symbolizing romance and Luxury Included® quality. Stewart’s mission statement was simple but powerful: “Love is all you need.’’ While other so-called “all-inclusives” offered meals and rooms at a set rate, Sandals Resorts’ prices covered gourmet dining options, premium brand drinks, gratuities, airport transfers, taxes and all land and watersport activities. The competition’s meals were buffet-style,

so Stewart created the on-property specialty restaurants with high culinary standards and white-glove service. Sandals Resorts also was the first Caribbean hotel to use whirlpools, the first to offer satellite television service, the first with swim-up pool bars and the first to guarantee that every room is fitted with a kingsize bed and a hair dryer. Soon, Sandals Resorts will also be the first resort company to offer over-the-water suites in the Caribbean. Set to debut late next year at Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa & Beach Resort, these gorgeous, dark timber suites are set right in the ocean on elevated stilts and feature see-through glass floors, over-the-water hammocks, outdoor

Such details would have seemed unimaginable 30 years ago, but today are evidence of Stewart’s un-ending quest to surprise and delight couples who choose to vacation at Sandals. “In the early days, we promised sunshine and a beautiful beach,’’ Stewart says. “Today, our customers have become more sophisticated travelers and more knowledgeable customers and so it’s been challenging, but also rewarding, to imagine and create new romantic settings and services to accommodate our discerning audience.” Stewart’s approach to accommodations, and

With a legacy of innovations that changed the face of the all-inclusive format and established Sandals Resorts as the most successful brand in the category, Sandals’ dynamic chairman will continue to find ways to surprise and delight guests, providing another 30 years of compelling reasons to make Sandals Resorts the luxurious and elegant base from which to explore the sights, sounds and tastes of the vibrant Caribbean lifestyle he loves.

also has a great eye for design and an intuitive ability to understand how people interact with that design. And Bay Roc, the resort that would become Sandals Montego Bay, represented everything Stewart liked in a resort. In 1954, Donald “Dick” De Lisser formed Bay Roc Hotel Limited. Founded much like a private club, it was a resort among friends who were members of the social elite. De Lisser was just one of a growing number of well-heeled travelers during the 1950s who were lured by the exquisite charm of the Caribbean and the new air service that would make travel to the region convenient and glamorous.
THE “SUITE” LIFE Bay Roc Estate Beachfront Villa Suite
He teamed up with revered architect Edward Durell Stone, who created the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and designed the original Bay Roc Hotel, Montego Bay. Stone and De Lisser arrayed a series of private cottages, at the edge of the beach. An adjacent building housed the bar, restaurant, and service functions—a now common approach to resort architecture, but, back then, revolutionary and considered quite avant-garde.
The concept
made the social space common and interactive, giving way to later designs—such as Sandals Resorts’ signature swim-up pool bars and expansive pool decks which have become SANDALS MONTEGO BAY Bay Roc Estate Beachfront Villa Suites 2010
