SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY Sandbach United Football Club was established in 2004 when Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers joined forces in their quest to improve the football facilities in Sandbach. Hence the R & A on the club badge. In January 2004, the membership of Sandbach Albion and Sandbach Ramblers voted in favour of amalgamation, with the aim of playing as a single club from the start of the 2004/5 season. Sandbach Albion was formerly known as Hays Junior Football Club and was founded in 1994, playing on the pitches of what was then Albion Chemicals. As health and safety issues became more prevalent in the 90’s, they left that site and for 5 years the senior home ground was at Sandbach Cricket Club. The younger sides played their games at junior schools throughout Sandbach. Sandbach Ramblers Youth Football Club was formed in 1995 to provide access to schoolboy football for the youth of Sandbach. Of course there had been a Ramblers team in the town before, Sandbach Ramblers were initially formed over 100 years ago, playing in the Cheshire County League and winning the Cheshire FA Senior Cup in 1914, before folding in 1975 reforming in 1979 and disbanding in the late 1980s.
Sandbach United 2 AFC Liverpool 4 How they lined up: SUFC: Booth, Diop Para, Clayton, O’Riordan, Jepson, Evans, Allcock, Hart, Powell, Knight, Garner-Knapper AFCLFC: Potter, Jones, Owens, Parr, Stephens, McConchie, Hardacre, Howell, Cockerline, C.Schorah, K.Schorah After an impressive display on Tuesday evening, Sandbach were in good touch as they went into their Macron Cup game against AFC Liverpool. However, they got off to the worst possible start as they went a goal down after just ten minutes as the ball was deflected into the Sandbach box, however the spin of the ball allowed Callum Schorah to get to the ball before the onrushing Sam Booth before taking it around him and then slotting into the empty net. Four minutes later the away side doubled their lead as a long ball over the top allowed Callum Schorah to race through and slot past the onrushing Sam Booth. It was the worst possible start for United who had been poor. They gave the away side way to much space and the ball over the top was killing them. In the 23rd minute it went from bad to worse for Sandbach as Callum Schorah latched onto another over the top ball and drove Into the box before being bought down by Oli Jepson, leaving the referee with no choice but to Point to the spot. Daniel Cockerline stepped up for the visitors and slotted his spot kick into the bottom right corner, sending booth the wrong way and making the score 3-0 with not even half an hour played.
Sandbach’s poor start had given them a mountain to climb, however Aaron Knight almost gave them a glimmer of hope as his free kick from 25 yards crashed off the bar. Ten minutes before half time Sandbach grabbed a goal that got them back in the game as a low cross into the box deflects off the leg of a Liverpool defender before looping over the keeper and nestling in the bottom corner. It was a lifeline for Sandbach who could build on this and maybe grab another before half time which would change the completion of the game going into the second period.
Unfortunately, Sandbach couldn’t grab a goal before the break so they went into half time 3-1 down. I dread to think what was said in the Sandbach changing room at half time, however it can’t have been a been a pretty watch. Whatever was said seemed to work as five minutes after the break they came close pulling another goal back as Knapper raced down the left to Powell who got to the byline but the angle was too tight and his shot went the wrong side of the post and into the side netting. Sandbach failed to really push on, they couldn’t seem to get in behind a solid Liverpool defence. United had been trying to over the top with a vision to get in behind, however it was evident that this wasn’t working so they reverted back to passing the ball out the back, when Jepson threw the ball back the Booth in the Sandbach goal he was too causal and Cockerline dispossessed him before slotting the ball into the empty net. It summed up a very miserable afternoon for Sandbach who were very poor. In the 73rd minute Booth redeemed himself after his error as Migrane cut inside from the left before shooting from inside the box but Booth was their to push it around the post for a corner. With moments to go the game was over and Liverpool were cruising to victory, however their complacency let Sandbach score what was merely a consolation goal when Knapper got to the byline down the right and pulled it back for Tom Powell who fired home from close range. Overall it was a very disappointing performance from Sandbach whose poor start ultimately cost them a place in the next round.
SANDBACH UNITED – CLUB HISTORY In 2006 Sandbach United formed the adult team, which initially competed in the Crewe and District League before moving to the Staffordshire Senior League First Division and then being promoted to the Premier Division for the 2008/9 season. In 2011, the club was awarded grants by the Football Foundation and the local council of over £2 million to build a 3G pitch and 9 grass pitches, together with changing rooms and an education facility. The Sandbach Community Football Centre was opened early in the 2011/12 season. United switched to the Cheshire League in 2011 and won promotion to the Premier Division for the 2013/14 season before moving to The Hallmark Security League for the 2016/17 season. The clubs first season in the Hallmark Security League was better than they could have dreamt, winning the Macron Club of the Month in December, finishing in 6th place and the playoffs in Division 1 as well as being Reusch First Division Challenge Cup Runners up. Their goal keeper, Ryan Moss also collected two Reusch Keeper of the Month awards. In another first for the club, the 2017/18 season saw the club enter The FA Vase with a home 2nd Qualifying Round fixture against AFC Emley. The club has over 600 players and 40+ teams that operate from its Hind Heath Road base. United have teams playing in the Mid-Cheshire Youth League, and the Cheshire Girls League among others, and the age range covers adults and veterans teams right down to Soccer School for Reception and Year 1 children.
Club History – New Mills New Mills re-joined The North West Counties League in 2004 (they were founding members in 1982) , initially with former player Scott Moore in the managerial hotseat. Moore steadied the ship while the club adapted to the higher level, before he was replaced by Tony Hancock. Hancock already had a wealth of experience managing in the North West Counties League, having worked at the likes of Abbey Hey and Woodley Sports, and he brought a new level of professionalism to the club, as well as bringing in new players, many of whom were to become club legends. The likes of Micky Ryan, Carlos Meakin, Adam Mather, Michael Bowler and Gary Kharras were all brought to the club by Hancock as the club went on to enjoy several years of success, beginning with the North West Counties League Second Division Trophy in 2007. The following season saw the team break numerous Club records as they won the Division Two Championship by ten points. 2008/09 saw another trophy triumph, The League Challenge Cup, but following an unprecedented twenty one game winning run, promotion to The Evostik League was only denied by a last day defeat at AFC Fylde which resulted in the team finishing runners up on goal difference. The Millers only required a point in that final game and actually played fairly well on the day, but missed opportunities and an early red card were to prove crucial as AFC Fylde came out on top and their run towards the upper reaches of non-league football started. The 2009/10 season again saw The Millers as bridesmaids for the second successive season as this time Newcastle Town grabbed the solitary promotion place to The EvoStik League. The Club enjoyed success in The FA Vase and reached the last sixteen for the first time in its history before The Northern League’s Norton and Stockton Ancients spoilt the Wembley dream. Shortly after the FA Vase exit Tony Hancock resigned from his post, with former Woodley Sports and Mossley boss Ally Pickering taking over the reigns in a caretaker role.
Club History – New Mills
The club advertised the Managers job at the end of 2009/10, and an impressive array of Managers applied and were invterviewed for the role. Caretaker Boss Pickering was successful in obtaining the post on a full time basis and 2010/11 proved to be a case of third time lucky as New Mills finally achieved their goal of promotion to The Northern Premier League when they won The North West Counties Premier Division. Winning the first seven games of the season the squad set the pace from start to finish before being presented with the Championship trophy after the game against local rivals Glossop North End on Easter Monday. The team also reached the North West Counties League Challenge Cup Final but failed to achieve the double after losing narrowly to Winsford United. It was a successful season off the field as well as the Club achieved the prestigious FA Charter Standard Adult Club status which was an excellent recognition for all the hard work that has been put in by everybody connected with the Club. The first team’s debut season in The EvoStik Northern Premier League was tough after being placed in Division One South, the eventual position of ninth represented a respectable finish. 2012/13 proved to be another roller-coaster ten months, after the club were moved into the Evo-Stik Division One North. After a mixed start to the campaign Pickering stepped down and was replaced as Manager by his number two Roy Soule, who had an immediate impact on the squad and brought in some new faces to add to the quality that was already in place. The Millers were defeated at Curzon Ashton on the final day of the season and that meant that they missed out on second place in the league and therefore had to face Trafford in the play-off semi-final. Trafford had already beaten the Millers home and away that season, and they were to be victorious again in front of a huge crowd at Church Lane just two days after the Curzon Ashton match.
Club History – New Mills 2013/14 was an all-together more difficult season with the Club having to overcome many hurdles, none more so than contending with the wettest High Peak winter in living memory which produced the inevitable March/April fixture backlog. The first team, who endured a high turnover of playing staff, eventually ended in a mid-table position in Division One North. Soule and his Assistant Manager Paul Armstrong continued to work hard, but were finding it more and more difficult to fend off attention for their players from clubs who were able to offer financial incentives to leave Church Lane. 2014/2015 proved tough for New Mills AFC as the Committee cut back on the players expenses and focused on developing youth players through the Development squad successfully. The Millers finished in the relegation positions in the Evo-Stik League, but were spared relegation on a technicality due to restructuring of the league pyramid. Sadly Manager Soule tendered his resignation in the summer and was initially replaced by ex-Stalybridge Celtic Manager Keith Briggs. Briggs was never to take charge of the club in a competitive fixture as just weeks after his appointment he accepted a coaching role at Sheffield United and his Assistant Andy Fearn took over the reigns. Fearn was to remain in post for just a few months when, after losing every game while he was in charge, he resigned from the job. Former Glossop North End Manager Garry Brown took over, bringing his assistant Paul Williams with him. Although they had enjoyed success at Wythenshawe Town the previous season at a far lower level, they were unable to make the step up and New Mills AFC hit the headlines in national press for all the wrong reasons. The club were winless in their 42 league matches that season, and mustered just three draws along the way which gained national media attention. The club found themselves back in the North West Counties League for the 2016/17 season and were keen to renew acquaintances with some old friends. Although there were signs of improvement Brown left his role early in the season, with Paul Williams taking over as Manager. Williams was unsuccessful in making the step up from Assistant Manager and he was to leave the club just before Christmas in 2016.
Maine Road 1 Sandbach United 2 How they lined up: MRFC: Betton, Smith, Earlam, Postolov, Edwards, Campbell, Burgess, Mooney, Coop, Roe, Hill SUFC: Booth, O’Riordan, Clayton, Stockton, Jepson, Rowntree, Hart, Hudson, Knight, Hatton, Williams Sandbach travelled to a bitterly cold Brantingham Road for their rearranges fixture against Maine Road on Monday night. Sandbach really should have taken the lead after just two minutes as left winger Robbie Hatton got into the box before being tackled but he then recycled the play by finding Aaron Knight on the edge of the box who showed quick feet before feeding Hatton down the left side who cut inside and looked to curl the ball past the keeper but Conrad Betton in the Maine Road goal was on hand to save, however all he could do was palm it into the path of Tom Williams who had plenty of time in the box but his first time shot missed the target. Eight minutes later it was the hosts turn to come close as Jamie Hill was allowed to race down the left before cutting into the box and finding Jack Coop on the edge of the box who took a touch and fired low but it fizzed just wide of Booths left post. Five minutes later the home side made their pressure count as they took the lead. Once again the dangerous Jamie Hill was given way too much space and time down the left side to send in a low cross to Coop who was unmarked in the box, Coop was able to make some space for the shot before firing into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 to his side.
Since going a goal down Sandbach looked disorganised and they had to somehow get themselves back into the game. Jamie Hill was causing United all sorts of problems, his pace and directness was making him very hard to defend against. The winger showed his class once more as he burst down the left side before sending a low cross that was cleared by Oli Jepson, the clearance however fell straight to Jamie Roe on the edge of the box who fires low and just wide of the left post. Sandbach we’re being dominated and then had to find a way to get back into the game. That’s when Robbie Hatton stepped up. He picked up the ball down the right side before doing outside his man, and then unleashing a rocket from just outside the box that arrowed into the top right corner leaving the keeper with no chance. It was always going to take something special to get Sandbach back into the game and that goal from Hatton certainly fell into the “special category”. Two minutes later Hatton almost added a quick fire second as he crashed a close range shot off the bar. Sandbach looked a lot better after they equalised, they seemed to have a spring in their step.
At half time Sandbach has improved and we’re looking the better of the two sides, however without Hatton’s wonder goal it could have been a very different half for United. The second half began with Sandbach once again looking the more dominant of the more dominant of the two sides.
In the 58th minute United made their dominance pay as first half goal scorer Robbie Hatton drove down the left side before being bundled down in the box. The referee showed no hesitation when pointing to the spot. Hatton dusted himself down and stepped up for United. He slotted his penalty into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way and giving Sandbach the lead. Despite not having many opportunities in the second half Maine Road looked quick on the counter attack, as they got in behind the Sandbach defence in the 68th minute the linesman looked to flag for offside, however much to the bemusement of the Sandbach players who had stopped playing, the referee told the official to put his flag down and told the players to carry on. Maine Road has carried on playing and they suddenly found themselves in on goal, thankfully for Sandbach Sam Booth was alert and on hand to save a close range shot and keep his side in the game. With 13 minutes Sandbach we’re still leading, however you felt like Maine Road could still Knick an equaliser late on as they were looking dangerous going forward. Sandbach had to grab another goal to double their lead and make the game save. Kieran Knapper had a great opportunity to put the game beyond doubt, as he cut was playing in behind he was forced wide by the defender, but he brilliantly turned his man and then cut inside from the left before shooting, unfortunately for him he couldn’t cap off his brilliant run with a goal as he dragged his shot wide of the near post. Sandbach were killing the game, their game management was exceptional. The we’re keeping the possession nicely and then taking it to the corner to try and run down the clock. Eventually the game ended and Sandbach could celebrate what was a very hard fought 3 points. They all showed fantastic desire and fit to grind out the win against a very good side
