This publication maps the scheduled infrastructure at the Sandberg Instituut in 2018. Read into the Main Departments, Temporary Programmes and Hosted Programmes. Visit the Sandberg website for updates and news. SANDBERG INSTITUUT As the postgraduate programme of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie Amsterdam, the Sandberg Instituut offers Master Programmes in Fine Arts, Interior Architecture and Design. The five Main Departments aim to deepen the practices of artists, designers and critics. In addition, the Temporary Programmes reflect on specific urgencies in society and the arts, and the Hosted Programmes focus on collaboration with other institutes. MAIN DEPARTMENTS

http://sandberg.nl

Sandberg Instituut’s Main Departments are Critical Studies, Design, The Dirty Art Department, Fine Arts and Studio for Immediate Spaces. An average of only twenty students per programme allows each course to be flexible and open to initiatives from students and third parties. The course directors, who are prominent artists, designers, theorists and curators with international practices, invite tutors and guests who are able to challenge the students to critically reflect on their profession, their work and their progress. Jurgen Bey, the Sandberg Instituut artistic director since 2010, has sought to find ways to align the institute with the dynamics of contemporary society. Bey introduced two-year Temporary Programmes that are developed according to urgent world issues. Vacant NL – the first Temporary Programme – was launched in 2011 and explored the vast potential of the thousands of vacant buildings in the Netherlands. In 2013, two additional temporary programmes were introduced: the School of Missing Studies dealt with art and the public space, whereas Material Utopias investigated the shifting boundaries between materials and techniques. Other finished Temporary Programmes include System D Academy, Cure Master, Designing Democracy, Materialisation in Art and Design, and Fashion Matters. Ongoing Temporary Programmes are the Master of Voice, Reinventing Daily Life, Radical Cut-Up and Shadow Channel. Two new Temporary Programmes starting in 2018 are The Commoners’ Society and Challenging Jewellery. HOSTED PROGRAMMES The Sandberg Instituut is hosting a category of educational programmes in collaboration with partner institutes and companies

since 2017. The Hosted Programmes attempt to intertwine existing agendas and their stakeholders for a collective two-year studying period. The topics are essential for the future of the Sandberg Instituut as a ‘learning institute’ and of art education in a broader, international perspective. Therefore, the Hosted Programmes are surrounded by other in-house projects such as debates, writing and conferencing. The first Hosted Programme is the Master Design of Experiences (2017 – 2019) in collaboration with the University of the Underground. It is part of joint investigations on the implications of ‘external funding’ for art education. Future topics are not yet decided, but might be for instance cultural-diversity discussions, the implications of artificial intelligence or the relation of art to public-urban space. OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS From 10 January until 1 April 2018, the Sandberg Instituut is open for applications to the Main Departments and two new Temporary Programmes: The Commoners’ Society and Challenging Jewellery.

ABOUT CRITICAL STUDIES The Master’s in Critical Studies is a two-year postgraduate programme in research and theory. The programme offers an open, interdisciplinary environment for the development of an independent research practice, while providing a rigorous grounding in critical theory, research methods and writing techniques. We are especially interested in forms of inquiry and study that are at odds with traditional academic frameworks, including practice-led research and other intersections of research, practice and theoretical inquiry.

http://sandberg.nl/main-department-critical-studies

Participants have the possibility to pursue a self-initiated research project with great autonomy, working individually or collectively with supervisors of their choice. Research projects are presented in a series of regular colloquia, which function as spaces for collective discussion and exchange. In addition to this, participants are provided with the support and resources for the development of collaborative projects related to their research, such as publications, exhibitions, screenings or symposia. Alongside the research trajectory, participants take part in a programme of seminars, lectures and workshops. This programme provides a thorough introduction to key concepts in critical theory and continental philosophy, explores research methodologies in relation to cultural practices and supports participants in the development of a writing practice. In addition to this general programme, specific themes are addressed in depth each month during lectures and seminars given by visiting speakers. Participants take an active part in shaping the educational programme and have the opportunity to organise workshops, seminars and excursions in parallel with it.

ABOUT DESIGN

Current Participants

With a selfless, committed, curious, serious, humorous, and above all hazardous mentality, plus a wide diversity of tools, the Design Department finds out what matters through design. Moving between reality and fantasy, chaos and systems, data and dreams, the programme addresses the contradictions of our time. It responds through design to world issues and questions the relationship between practice and politics. Design itself is presented as a tool to organise the relationship with the outside world.

http://sandberg.nl/main-department-design

With a trust-based educational model (filled with extreme talent, positive energy and a spirit of equality), the Design department stimulates people to feel both free and passionate about engaging in the things that they love or care about, through making and collaborating. We welcome students who embrace the vulnerability, doubt and unpredictability of where design can lead them. They are investigative designers, critical optimists, generous collaborators, storytellers, eternal students, friends, lovers, fighters, or sensitive guides for our precarious future. Global challenges are approached from a personal and human point of view, where the different perspectives within the department are articulated; identities, stories and visual strategies merge throughout the practices in personal, specific and committed manners. Forms become relations, disciplines turn into mentalities and the internet is used as a continuous common canvas for trying new things. The self-initiated projects that are developed present new disciplinary frameworks, start movements, construct collectives and invest in alternative models of living.

Projects include Quicksand, Telemagic and Disarming Design from Palestine. Quicksand Quicksand is a series of student-run lectures and dinners. With ‘critical design practice’ being either too self-centred to influence or too peripheral to care, Quicksand explores possible strategies for politicality within art & design. The first lecture took the form of a listening session on Latin American popular music. The event explored the pharmacolonial registers of psychotropics and tropical psychedelia. Puerto Rican theorist Julio Ramos coined the term pharmacoloniality to denote an inverse process of ‘colonisation’, whereby Latin American substances – sugar, tobacco, coffee, cocaine, music – are used to ‘wake up’ and stimulate European rationality. Current curation Quicksand: Anastasia Kubrak, Miquel Hervás Gómes, Juan Pablo Mejia, Samuli Saarinen, Sherida Kuffour, Heikki Lotvonen.

Telemagic Visualise the web, an enchanted landscape, becomes a butterfly. The Oracle delivers prophecies that try to make sense of things that escape us. Using its mystic powers it senses your presence and sends advice that aims to enhance human capacity in a virtual world. The Oracle is part of TELEMAGIC, an open medialab that concerns the future of media. Adopting the memes of magic, (techno) paganism, occultism and new (or repurposed) symbolism for ‘the virtual’, TELEMAGIC wants to offer insights to prepare ourselves against evolution that is to come. Design & Curation: Cyanne van den Houten & Ymer Marinus. Disarming Design from Palestine

http://sandberg.nl/main-department-design

‘Disarming Design from Palestine’ is an inclusive design label collaborating with international designers and local artisans. In September 2017 a team of Sandberg Design masters and Jordanian and Palestinian designers collaborated with local craftswomen and men from the Gaza refugee camp in the Jordan city Jerash, to develop a series of thought provoking products. On the invitation of Amman Design Week, and hosted by cultural center Darat al Funun, ‘Disarming Design from Palestines’ had put together a programme in which the participants worked in teams to design items and interact with the artisans. They investigated their process, skills, and made works that could pass on the stories that were shared and could reflect on the complex reality of the camp. With this workshop participants reflected upon the function of creative practices in situations of conflict.

ABOUT THE DIRTY ART DEPARTMENT ‘The Dirty Art Department presents itself as an open space for thought, creation and action. It sees itself as a dynamic paradox, flowing between the pure and the applied, the existential and the deterministic, the holy and the profane. It is concerned with individuality, collectivity and our navigation of the complex relationship between the built world and the natural world, and between other people and ourselves. It is a place to build objects or totems, religions or websites, revolutions or business models, paintings or galaxies.

http://sandberg.nl/main-department-dirty-art-department

Although the Dirty Art Department arrives from a shared background of design and applied art, it seeks to reject the division between the pure and the applied. Since ‘God is dead’ and ‘the spectacle’ are omnipresent, it sees the creation of alternative and new realities as the way to reconsider our existential situation on this planet. The Dirty Art Department is open to students from all backgrounds, including designers, artists, bankers, sceptics, optimists, economists, philosophers, sociologists, independent thinkers, poets, urban planners, farmers, anarchists and the curious. Please enjoy the trip.’ The aim of the Dirty Art Department is to develop singular individual and collective practices, distinct from medium or subject, and to give an insight into how to place these practices into the existing contexts of art, design, performance, writing, pizza making, etc. Currently the Dirty Art Department focuses on activism, spiritual enlightenment, education, and dealing with the actual reality as a pre cursa to the ‘revolution’ and as an inquiry on how to live with it. Following the department’s nomination for the Milan Design Prize and its close relationship with the Macao Organisation in Milan (IT), the department will collaborate with both Macao and the Athens School of Fine Arts to co-produce The Wandering School Part 2: Revolution or Bust! which will be presented in both Athens and Milan in 2018. Additionally, this year sees the establishment of the Dirty Art Foundation and the creation and building of the autonomous project space AutomagiA in the NDSM-werf in North Amsterdam, which will be run by current and past students of the department.

The final challenge is to create new context; that is, the transformation of reality. The Dirty Art Department promotes a strong theoretical and philosophical agenda and is open, in practice, to dangerous attempts and spectacular failures. It sees itself as a journey, and wherever it stops off, it remembers that ‘Any Space is the Place’. Website: www.dirtyartdepartment.com Facebook: www.facebook.com/dirtyartdepartment

ABOUT FINE ARTS

Current Participants

Sandberg Instituut’s Fine Arts department retains a focus on autonomy and making, while addressing the social and economic roles of art production. Core to the programme are the regular conversations with our main tutors, while guest tutors are invited for seminars and tutorials throughout the year. Studio time thus alternates with common activities such as workshops, seminars, one-off events such as an annual group exhibition and excursions abroad. An intense winter thesis writing/reflection period takes place in the Arctic Circle, while all students partake in the spring excursion.

http://sandberg.nl/main-department-fine-arts

Several times a year, students come together with staff and tutors to discuss common interests that have emerged and can be addressed with the help of experts who, following these sessions, are invited accordingly. Student-led activities, such as group crits, film nights and Monday lunches are encouraged, while internal platforms such as The Stolen Studio are in place to promote small-scale try-outs and experimentation in presentation. Throughout the two years, the Sandberg Instituut functions as a base, while encouraging participants to develop and test their practice both within and beyond the school. The programme unfolds across three open modules over the course of two years, structurally redefining conventional notions of artistic labour. Language

The Language module concerns actual language as well as ‘language as description’ and the languages of what is seen, heard and written. The programme is divided between developing artistic practice and broadening (through specific tasks) ways of seeing and working. Language takes a holistic approach to the making of art, expanding and exploring our notions of what artistic practice can include. Image The Image module centers on the notion of representation, time and context in various visual and audio-visual practices. Although the programme does not disregard technical or formal considerations, nor public presentation, the emphasis lies in developing individual production strategies: strategies for processing and materializing thought, intuition and knowledge; and strategies commonly developed through production experience and through considering the strategies of others. 20

Play/Object The Play/Object module focuses on contemporary constructions of ‘performativity’ and object-based productions within a cross-disciplinary, public context. It concentrates on the creation and practice of production, with particular attention paid to how objects interact with time, space and value. Students

http://sandberg.nl/main-department-fine-arts

The Fine Arts Department is looking for eager, active and ambitious students who are willing to participate in group tutorials, workshops and other forms of education. We are looking for authentic makers and thinkers who are open to fundamental reflection on their work. A sound background in art or possession of equivalent expertise in affiliated fields is required. Candidate students will be evaluated on their motivation, previous experience and portfolio. The admissions committee will focus on the authenticity, artistry and autonomous visual quality of the work presented.

ABOUT STUDIO FOR IMMEDIATE SPACES The Studio for Immediate Spaces (SIS) investigates space in all its forms and implications. It is an autonomous platform for reflections ranging from commentary and analysis to current spatial realities and production processes. Using the tools of the geographer, the urban planner, the architect or the designer, we create new grounds for research, blurring the boundaries between science and politics, art and architecture, interior and exterior. Through field observation, analysis or physical construction we dig into the spaces created by popular culture and contemporary society to reveal new meanings. Public or intimate, permanent or temporary, material or virtual, we are interested as much in the physical quality of space as in its social and political outcomes. http://sandberg.nl/main-department-studio-for-immediate-spaces

The two-year programme proposes an alternative take on the field of interior architecture, exceeding the boundaries of its traditional curriculum. The interdisciplinary environment of the SIS is a platform for debate, opening up new terrains and allowing for the development of independent practices. Here, exploration fuses with reflection; design is an instrument of research, research is an instrument of discovery. We provide the tools for inquisitorial investigation to reveal unseen contemporary territories. Design methodologies focus on urban investigations and building processes, promoting a hands-on approach and DIY culture as a means of emancipation, celebrating craftsmanship and the immediacy of space making.

The backbone of the course of the SIS is formed by five studios (Construction, Context, Content, Writing and Theory), which are led by tutors active in different fields and offer strong support to individual projects and experimentations. In addition, eight times a year, the SIS welcomes a guest who introduces their methodology and personal research through an intense week-long workshop. These Methodology Weeks focus on field research and hands-on production. These immersive experimentations confront the participants with specific ways of working, thoughts and production methods. The SIS delivers an MA in Interior Architecture. Although we always question the very definition of this practice, we are nevertheless also strongly grounded in this field and its history. At the crossroad between multiple arts, the profession has a unique role to play. We like to question the politics underlying the traditional and future practices of this field in terms of production, consumption, and mediation to define a common ground for our reflection. By investigating preconceived notions and searching for new strategies, we aim to dismantle the syntax of today’s urban spaces and expand the definition of interior and exterior forms of architecture.

27

ABOUT THE COMMONERS’ SOCIETY Using visual, digital, and performative tools the Temporary Programme, The Commoners’ Society, proposes a new kind of metropolis that is focused on social interaction and equal opportunities over financial growth and profit.

http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-the-commoners-society

The late writer, teacher and cultural theorist Mark Fisher (aka K-Punk) wrote extensively on the relation between neo-liberal politics and the rising numbers of depressions and suicides we see around us. He showed this is because we are caught within ‘capitalist realism’ and are no longer able to imagine alternative economic and social systems. According to the philosopher Byung Chun Han, this is specifically so because we became our own exploiters when the exploitation of others disappeared (or was removed) from our real life experience. We recognise that a way out is to actively see ‘the other’ again, to sense real presence so we can interrelate once more. With these perspectives on our current society in mind, the Temporary Programme, The Commoners’ Society, will look for new ways of living, making, owning, sharing, managing and maintaining; or generally for models for what we call ‘a new commoning’. The proposals we develop will be manifold, conceptual and hands on, and will always be tested ‘on the ground’. Therefore the programme will be located at a yet to be determined Amsterdam urban development area where we will have our actual work and test terrain. The site-specific campus allows the commoners, who are the people that will live and work there, but which also includes the heads, tutors and students of the programme, who are artists, designers, researchers, educators, theorists and communicators, to propose models for alternative ways of living, leading to new urban landscapes. The programme starts by building a temporary workspace for ourselves that is flexible and adjustable and makes crucial interaction with the surrounding living and working population possible. The programme take as its departure point city-making structures such as General Management, Economy, Cityplanning and Infrastucture, Arts, Culture and Sports, Housing, Employment, Health, Environment and Climate, Mobility, Public Space, Co-habitation and relationships. These notions will of course be fundamentally restructured and probably renamed from the moment the participants get involved. The Temporary Programme will be contextualised by a theoretical reflection upon earlier utopian models and strategies and will have a wider public programme. It will be part of a larger frame where the

28

University of Amsterdam, architectural platforms, the municipality, the project-developer, the building companies, etc. are involved. They will all have specific roles and interests and we seek as much collaboration with them as possible to leverage the project and its effects. Potential partners include: University Amsterdam BPD (project developer), Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Failed Architecture, Archis/Volume, Municipality of Amsterdam, AFK, Upstream Gallery, Studio Framis NL.

http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-the-commoners-society

Within this context, participants will have the possibility to pursue a self-initiated research project with great autonomy, working individually or collectively. Research projects are presented in a series of regular meetings in the area or on other locations in the city. We use existing or build new spaces for collective discussion and exchange. Within the framework of the programme participants are also provided with support and resources for the development of collaborative projects related to their research, such as publications, exhibitions, screenings workshops, actions, events. The Temporary Programme, The Commoners’ Society, runs from 2018 – 2020 and welcomes applications from amongst others artists, writers, editors, theorists, curators, philosophers, sociologists, architects, activists, designers, dancers, lawyers.

ABOUT CHALLENGING JEWELLERY What is small and intimate is often overlooked. The Temporary Programme, Challenging Jewellery, aims to give an impulse to the jewellery profession by focusing on the applicability of jewellery-thinking in society, from the making industry to the market of limited art editions. Tutors, guests and participants of the programme explore the attention paid to the small and intimate, the human handling, and the careful treatment of materials that they deem needed in the broader context of today’s digitised society.

http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-challenging-jewellery

The programme allows the study of current notions of body-bound and human-focused objects and products. Through this approach it is attempting to think big on a small scale – which supposes an ability to understand micro working. The Temporary Programme challenges the subject of jewellery on a fundamental level – how it relates to our present time, its social and political implications, its relevance. The input for Challenging Jewellery is based on intergenerational dialogue. The visiting tutors and guests – varying from theoreticians and curators to contemporary architects, designers and artists – guarantee a continuous renewal of viewpoints on and insights into a discipline known to traditions and historical design and theory connotations. The board with four key figures in the realm of jewellery and design ensures a solid foundation for the Temporary Programme. Like the previous Temporary Programmes, Material Utopias, Materialisation in Art & Design, Fashion Matters and the current programme Radical Cut-Up, Challenging Jewellery works together with BA departments and workshops at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, such as Ceramics, Glass, Textile, CadCam, Wood, Metal and Photography.

ABOUT SHADOW CHANNEL In recent years, high-definition video has democratised as a medium. Online platforms have lowered the cost of uploading and distributing films to zero. Social media are dominated by streaming video. Today, anyone with a smartphone has a movie camera at their disposal. It is now completely natural to think, sketch, and communicate in video. HD is the new A4.

http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-shadow-channel

Tutors and students at the Sandberg Instituut’s Design department have, since the department’s inception in the 1990s, been at the forefront of this development. The department’s new and radical approaches to the moving image began to eat away at the edges of film and cinema. Many experimental graphic designers – including Shadow Channel tutors Rob Schröder and Daniel van der Velden – started to present their ideas via moving image installations, online videos, and, eventually, feature films.

To channel the momentum of an emerging movement of makers who embrace new approaches to filmmaking, we are launching the new two-year Temporary Programme, Shadow Channel. It is an independent master programme in film, design and propaganda, with close ties to the Main Department Design. Shadow Channel is a utopian platform commissioning, streaming, and distributing counter-narratives created by underrepresented voices, in response to platform capitalism, post-truth politics and the rise of neo-fascism. Students of Shadow Channel operate as a renegade production studio, running a deep stream narrating the real, playing short-and-long-form documentaries, music videos, and live feeds in the shadows of the internet. Responding in realtime to real-world issues, revealing and reflecting on the dominance of film and design, and the dread, desire and dizziness of freedom controlling the human condition. The curriculum is divided into backend, frontend and context sections. The backend section dissects the technological apparatus of ubiquitous video, updating software skills, developing media literacy and creating a deep understanding of informational sprawl. The frontend section amplifies visual direction, critical storytelling and affective power, opening up a landscape of languages for maximum impact. The context section looks at what’s at stake before and beyond the work and the way of working, grounding the artists in the present, and presenting a multitude of memories of the future. During the two-year programme the channel will stream from the deep web, and from within cinemas, galleries, clubs, and festivals across the Netherlands and beyond. Students of Shadow Channel will curate, promote, and produce public events that attempt to

36

expand the discourse around art and activism, and push the possibility, potential and poignancy of what art can do. As author Ursula K. Le Guin rallies us, ‘resistance and change often begin in art’. There is an alternative. Another world is possible. Demand the future.

ABOUT RADICAL CUT-UP The Radical Cut-Up (RCU) programme critically examines and joyfully celebrates the emergence and evolution of the cut-up as a contemporary mode of creativity and a dominant global model of cultural production in the early twenty-first century.

http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-radical-cut-up

Against the backdrop of the accelerated growth of new digital technologies that expand the production and circulation of images, text, sound, and objects in contemporary life, the interdisciplinary temporary Master’s thereby draws on a broader definition of the term ‘cut-up’ as a mixture or fusion of disparate elements, or the art of carefully crafted juxtaposition. Within the context of this course, the term is a container for a long list of names and actions, which describes the mixing and reconfiguration of existing materials to produce new outcomes.

Participants 2017 – 2019 Adam Bletchly Lou Buche Daan Couzijn Rebecca Eskilsson Zsofia Kollar Wesley Mapes Juliana Maurer Barnaby Monk Fabian Reichle Javier Rodriguez Fernandez Fenna Schilling Farida Sedoc Anthony Smyrski Agustina Woodgate

The interdisciplinary programme no longer regards the artwork as an end point but a simple moment in an infinite chain of contributions. It embraces the ‘ecstasy of influences’ (Jonathan Lethem), refuses any form of ‘source-hypocrisy’ and boldly accepts all ideas as secondhand, consciously and unconsciously drawn from a million outside sources. Following an experimental approach to the interdisciplinary nature of cultural production today, Radical Cut-Up unites theory and practice by providing a new perspective in the contemporary educational landscape. Drawing on a broad and inclusive range of media – photography, video, architecture, film, sculpture, dance, theatre, poetry, literature, graphic design, industrial design, drawing, painting, animation, digital media, illustration and fashion design – the Temporary Programme embraces new methodologies for the future of education: interdisciplinarity, collaboration and co-production. Radical Cut-Up is based on a cooperative learning approach in which all participants interact with each other to facilitate individual as well as collective artistic development by capitalising on one another’s resources and skills. Beyond disciplinary boundaries and conventional pedagogical models, the programme adopts the principles of cut-up not only as its conceptual and methodological foundations but applies them directly by questioning the classical format of an institutionalised art school. Radical Cut-Up explores new forms of teaching and learning by bringing together practitioners from all over the world. In 2018, the course will work in collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Not in New York, Rotterdam and Lodown Magazine Berlin. Radical Cut-Up (RCU) is a continuation and a disruption of the former temporary material-based programmes Material Utopias (MU) and Materialisation in Art and Design (MAD).

ABOUT REINVENTING DAILY LIFE Interactive art forms, such as theatre, performing arts and music, have the ability to create exceptional connections between people. In a theatre, a concert hall, or the public space, a relationship between performer and spectator ‘naturally’ comes to life. Would it be possible to integrate more of this quality into our daily life? Can we infiltrate ‘normal’ living with an artistic experience? Can we do this on a daily basis? And will art be able to improve our lives structurally, without losing its intrinsic quality and value?

Participants 2016 – 2018 Laura Bolscher Sean Cornelisse Kees de Haan Luuk Imhann Sjors van Leeuwen Anouk van Reijen Daan Roukens Céline Talens Gijs Velsink Carlijn Voorneveld Nadja van der Weide

http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-reinventing-daily-life

The idea for Reinventing Daily Life started with the observation that the gap between common life and the performing and other arts has become bigger in the last few decades. This raises questions about the romantic idea of the artist as the autonomous and only starting point of a work, focusing on the aesthetic result and not on the capacity that is needed for creating connections with the community in which they live. Reinventing Daily Life investigates the connections between performing arts and daily life, between people and art, between society and the artist. During this Temporary Programme we will dive into the role of the artist and integrate the process of connecting as a new part of the artistic process; taking it as a point of departure. Students are on a quest for pressing questions and issues that people are struggling with and to make a connection between the autonomous power of their work and the audience. Reinventing Daily Life functions as a laboratory where we find ways to improve the quality of life with the result of integrated fantasy and creativity. Starting from the world of music and theatre, but with a multidisciplinary group of artists, we offer alternatives for what is common and normalised in order to eventually attribute to a new status quo. The participants, guests, tutors and head of Reinventing Daily Life work predominantly as a collective, but there will be a lot of focus on the personal creative process as well. Guest tutors from theatre, music, visual arts, philosophy and other relevant fields propose assignments that are inspired by their experiences. Each course includes many joint and solo presentations in an organised communal space, always embedded in environments outside the academic structure. In addition, there are lectures and the viewing of theatre productions, installations, performances and exhibitions through a critical lens.

ABOUT MASTER OF VOICE Master of Voice is a Temporary Programme examining the voice as a unique discipline. The focus is on the human voice, as a means to or an end in itself, within artistic practice. The participating students work with the/their voice, exploring the voice in its various social, cultural and technological appearances – from vocal speech to ‘the speech act’ to singing. The programme includes a special orientation on gender and technology.

Participants 2016 – 2018 Angelo Custódio Thom Driver Miyuki Inoue Kyung Bin Koh Maria Montesi Natasha Papadopoulou Danae Papazymouri Duncan Robertson Eva Susova Cécile Tafanelli Mavi Veloso

The human voice has always been an integrated part of modern art, notably within performance art, sound art and conceptual art. However, this programme starts from the notion of the voice as a single subject. Isn’t the voice, with its capacities to embody and adapt to all disciplines, the ultimate medium? http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-master-of-voice

Master of Voice examines the voice and its prominent role in our post-industrial society. Our students are from different artistic backgrounds, including fine arts, design, choreography, dance, theatre, performance, music and documentary and other film. The curriculum combines research, study, experimentation and production in order to develop new artistic forms – individual or collective – which take the human voice as its primary material. The Master of Voice reflects an increasing interest amongst a new generation of artists and writers, often female, who use the voice – subjectively and objectively – in their work (often described as a means to define their intimate relationship with the computer). This points to a condition: that ‘orality’ – spoken or in written text as the first person – has become a big issue today, a condition which, without doubt, is informed by processes of digitization and new technologies. Taking the human voice into consideration could lead to new paradigms of the relation between technology and what is human. The Master of Voice provides an environment for this investigation. Recent and Future Projects Workshops and group projects are an important part of the Master of Voice curriculum. The aim is to find a common ground between the participants, which can potentially lead to collaborations that bring in experiences from a variety of backgrounds. ‘Inner Stage’ was developed by tutor Snejanka Mihaylova and took place from 7 – 11 October 2016 in Sofia (Bulgaria) and in the surrounding Vitosha mountain. The trip to Bulgaria also marked the introduction to the programme for all participants and the whole

tutorial team. The workshop was given in collaboration with psychologist Lubumir Draganov. Short workshops in the first year were given by Werker Collective and Maria Guggenbichler respectively. The workshop with Werker focused on agency & voice, and was centred around Werker Magazine 2, ‘A Spoken History of the Young Worker’. Maria Guggenbichler gave two workshops. One took the form of an improvised recording studio set up at project space Sideroom. The second one ‘If You’re White, Pass The Mic!’ was aimed at a consciousnessraising group for white people, and took place in the artist’s studio in Amsterdam Zuid-Oost.

http://sandberg.nl/temporary-programme-master-of-voice

In January 2017, the Master of Voice students realised new productions in the framework of The One Minutes supervised by guest tutor Cally Spooner. In Spring 2017, Master of Voice presented ‘Open Stage’, a public event series supervised by tutor Snejanka Mihaylova and hosted by Rongwrong project space. The 3-part edition culminated in an evening-performance-event; a programme of workshops over 3 consecutive days; and a concluding workshop developed as an audience-participation event presented during the graduation week in June 2017. In the first year, the Master of Voice organised trips to Sofia (Bulgaria), Brussels and Athens. The programme for the second year includes a workshop conducted by Jeremiah Day, in the spirit of Locomotion, a concept developed by choreographer Simone Forti; as well as a workshop with the musician/performer Planningtorock. The Voice of the Artist is the title of a symposium which will take place as a concluding event in the summer of 2018.

ABOUT MASTER DESIGN OF EXPERIENCES The Master Design of Experiences exists at the nexus between critical design, experiential, theatrical, filmic, semiotics, political and musical practices. It aims to teach students how to engineer situations, to design experiences and events to best support social dreaming, social actions and power shifts within institutions, companies and governments.

http://sandberg.nl/hosted-programme-master-design-of-experiences

Students have rarely before been given the tools and means to learn to understand their profession in terms of the increasingly multi-faceted and malleable role it assumes in today’s world (which is ever-changing and disorienting). The Programme encourages students to use their own voice, style, tone and aesthetics as manifested in final outcomes of performative product scenarios, products embedded in the context of the built environment and the institutions.

Participants Malena Maria Arcucci John Charles Bricker Tom Burke Alexander Cromer Francisco Dorado Ryan Eykholt Heather Griffin Juhee Hahm Andrea de Kruijf Anna Maria Merkel Joseph Pleass Ada Reinthal Luke George Hardy Rideout Evita Eva-Maria Bianca Rigert Jack Waghorn

The curriculum is concerned with a contemporary and strategic foresight implying politics, sustainability, institutions, new technologies and scientific developments both in Artificial Intelligence and in the current digital ecosystems. It makes innovative use of a variety of practices to engage members of the public with the experiences and the debates created. Unconventional Research Office The Master Programme produces research through practice and education as a research practice. Students are investigating, unravelling, characterising and speculating on the commodities of the act of thinking. By questioning the social and cultural capital of education, projects are opening up discussions on the manufacture of knowledge, confronting past and present fears. As a part of the programme, the Unconventional Research Office intends to demonstrate the state of ideologies in contemporary societies, where knowledge is interwoven with the idea of the nation-state and cultural heritage while current developments in technology propose a global notion of ‘collectiveness’. Through the production of written texts, podcasts and multimedia projects, students are acting as a point of dialogue between stakeholders portraying the value of social dreaming, experiences and theatre as critical research practices in institutions. Partner Institute The University of the Underground was founded in February 2017, as a charity with a ANBI status (RSIN 8575.82.781), with the purpose of creating a global engagement with society as a whole, bringing generations together to democratise access to public

60

institutions and trigger changes and critical reflections through the use of creative, experiential and design practices. The University of the Underground aims to produce unconventional research and design practices to better understand and challenge the formulation of culture, the manufacture and commodities of knowledge. It believes in a transnational form of education, which goes across borders and beyond nation-states. It is are based in Amsterdam but will be nurturing other tuition-free global initiatives internationally.

http://sandberg.nl/hosted-programme-master-design-of-experiences

It was founded to reinvigorate creative education threefold: it aims to forge a more diverse leadership by offering free education to the next generation of creatives. It aims to maintain, support and cultivate countercultures that will reactivate the public’s engagement with democratic institutions and their plausible futures. And it aims to define new models of education and cultural leadership that will spread across borders. The University of the Underground exists to show young creatives how to engineer situations, design experiences, and ignite social change in institutions and governments. The University of the Underground is composed of a multidisciplinary international team as part of its advisory board, guest tutors and teaching team. The board of the University of the Underground is composed of professionals from different fields of interest such as MOMA Senior Design curator Paola Antonelli, co-director of the Serpentine Gallery Hans Ulrich Obrist, WeTransfer president Damian Bradfield, intellectual activist Prof. Noam Chomsky, Pussy Riot’s Nadezhda Andreyevna Tolokonnikova, filmmaker Douglas Trumbull and award-winning author Dave Eggers to name a few. Hosted Programmes

The Sandberg Instituut is hosting a category of educational programmes in collaboration with partner institutes and companies since 2017.

JURGEN SPEARS

BRITNEY BEY

Dear graduates,

Dear, dear graduates.

Or should I say, almost graduates, seeing as none of the diplomas are signed yet.

Or should I say, almost graduates, seeing as none of the diplomas are signed yet.

He smiles. Jurgen wanted to throw one of his famous winks into the crowd, but eventually decided not to. “Don’t overdo it, Jurgen, don’t do it,” he said to himself, no need to underline things twice.

She winks. Britney wanted to start off with one of her famous remarks about the futility of these Übergangsobjekten often used in such ceremonies, but eventually decided not to.

No need at all! I got this, I got this – they must have loved this joke about them being almost graduates!

“Don’t underplay it, Britney, don’t do it,” she said to herself. They know that already, everyone knows that already. I got this, I got this – they loved this joke about them being almost graduates!

Just continue, he told himself. I personally don’t believe in a real world, Jurgen continued. I believe in Mars; yes, we are all from Mars, that’s why no one gets us, you see? They haven’t been to Mars yet. I think the real world problematizes reality. And just like the black stars in the sky – they are like us, the Sandberg stars, like mountains of sand in the dark. Just like dark matter, it’s just like dark matter. But as I said or was saying, you are all nearly known as ‘formerly known as students’ but for these last minutes, you are yet to be called that, for these last little moments, you’re still called ‘mine’. You’ll be mine until I stop, sign the diplomas and continue, but for now I’m still a little lucky. Jurgen rolls his shoulders ever so slightly, probably no one even saw – and then he cracks his neck, and even though he is a little nervous, he knew it was important for them to hear. I used to think, I had the answers to everything, but now I know Life doesn’t always go my way, yeah … It feels like I’m caught in the middle [Jurgen sighs deeply] That’s when I realise Jurgen sings: I’m not a girl Not yet a woman. All I need is time, A moment that is mine, While I’m in-between I’m not a girl There is no need to protect me It’s time that I Learn to face up to this on my own

But as I said or was saying, you are all nearly known as ‘formerly known as students’ but for these last minutes, I’m still talking to you as students, this is now the in-between, I want to scream and shout, sometimes and sometime I wanted you to gimme more, but every time I see all of you I feel so lucky. Britney rolled her shoulders ever so slightly, though she was sure some people saw – and then extended her jaw for a moment, and even though she was nervous, she knew it was important for them to hear. In a new home, the first thing people do Is build a fence around their home After the fence is built, oh yeah … They go back to the front of the house and knock on the neighbour’s door and say ‘Hi, we’re the neighbours’ [Britney sighs deeply] That’s when I realise Britney lectures:

With teary intent and fire in his eyes he meets each and every one of his students’ gazes, urging them to take in the text of the song as if it was the last thing they’d ever hear. I’ve seen so much more than you know now. So don’t tell me to shut my eyes. I’m not a girl Not yet a woman. All I need is time, A moment that is mine, While I’m in between

I will give you a piece of me today, Britney spoke. I don’t believe in the real world, but we will need to change our world till the world ends. So how to act and how to behave. I thought about two soccer players, they have a field, consisting of just a collection of lines. But there are ways and rules on how to behave, and you can hold it against me but I believe that if we know the playing field we are able to bend and break the rules –

I’m not a girl, But if you look at me closely, You will see it in my eyes. This girl will always find Her way.

Jurgen’s eyes had closed during the last couplet. When he opened them after the last words had left his lips, he could feel all his students’ bodies pressed against his in a tight hug. The chocolate whipped cream profiteroles he had wanted to use as objects of wild association during the graduation had been squashed in his pocket, cream and chocolate alike spilling out of his pockets all over them. Fudge these analogies, and chocolates and bouquets and wines, he thought. So they signed their diplomas with spilt sauce. And so it was; they tumbled and cuddled and collaborated and laughed and talked and shared and cuddled some more, covered in chocolate brown melted milky chocolate and creamy white cream, the sun was already rising again and they were happy.

Collaborative practices And sharing possibilities. All I need is friends And young minds close by While I’m in-between I’m just someone Who believes in sharing knowledge It’s time that I Exchange ideas and not do this on my own. Inspired by her own words of honest wisdom, she meets each and every one of her students’ gaze, urging them to listen, to take these words with them as if they were the last words they’d ever hear. I’ve owned so much, houses and hair, but it is now, that houses and hair, we will share. Collaborative practices And sharing possibilities. All I need is friends And young minds close by. While I’m in-between.

I’m just someone, Driving 40 km an hour. You will see it in my eyes This girl has Prooff and we will find Our way.

The chocolate whipped cream profiteroles she had saved as their graduation gift squished in her pocket, chocolate and cream alike spilling out of her pockets all over them. Fuck these analogies, and chocolates and bouquets and wines, she thought. So they signed their diplomas with spilt sauce. And so it was; they tumbled and cuddled and laughed and talked and shared and collaborated covered in dark chocolate brown melted chocolate and creamy white cream, the sun set and they were crazy.
