What is Rune Casting? Runic divination is not some kind of fortune telling. Rune casting works deeply with the subconscious. The 33 Runes, if you use the AngloSaxon Futhorc, or the 24 Runes of the Elder Futhark when put into the Rune pouch represent the entire universe. When one poses a question, one’s entire conscious and subconscious mind must be focused on the question. The Runelots then selected are not random selections, but choices made by the subconscious mind. Rune Casting thus operates on basic principles of psychology.

To do a Rune reading one must address a particular issue. Unlike Astrology, Runes do not speak of the general. Rune readings address specific issues. One must examine the past, present and the future or what the future will be if one continues to tread the current path. The future can always be changed by changing the path one treads. In this respect, Rune readings are more an evaluation process than forecasting or foretelling. One has the opportunity to clearly look at the past (in relation to the issue on hand), the present situation and infer what the future would be. Rune reading or Rune casting is thus not occult or magic – it’s more about intuitive perception. It’s simply a matter of examining cause and effect and pointing out the likely outcome.
n e w s
Rune readings are not very mysterious or related to the supernatural. And they are certainly not demonic! Rune casting is a simple method of examining the path we tread and what the effects and outcome might be. It is a matter of using one’s subconscious mind free from the limitations placed by the conscious.

carefully. This pair represents the advice the Runes are giving to you and you need to interpret their meaning as they relate to one another. They may indicate the need to wait or act immediately. They may also indicate that you shift your attention to new realms totally unrelated to the problem. The final Rune is the seventh one. It is important to remember here that a positive Rune (or a negative one) will in fact indicate a positive outcome (or a negative one) only if the preceding Runes have so suggested. This Rune indicates the help that you can expect to receive in solving your problem. A negative Rune here it may indicate an unwillingness on your part to accept advice or slight impediments and delays in the resolution of the problem. The Rune below the centre Rune needs to be turned over next. This Rune indicates the aspects of the problem that cannot be changed and need to be accepted as they are. Positive Runes here indicate a lack of niggling problems while negative Runes indicate obstacles. Finally, your patience pays off and you can turn over the last Rune – this one is the result Rune and indicates the final outcome of the problem given all the other Runes. Remember – whatever the final outcome, Rune casting believes that the future can be altered by changing the circumstances you are in now.

Seven Rune Layout This layout is popular because it gives a little more detail about the past and the future. It interprets events likely to occur within the next three months keeping in mind things that have happened in the past three months. Method: Select 7 Runes and lay them out 6 in a row and the 7th one centred, below the row. Interpretation: This layout requires you to interpret the Runes in pairs. The first pair indicates the problem. The second pair shows events in the past that have led to the problem. The third pair is the most important and must be dealt with very
Five Rune Layout The five Rune layout is a popular one to indicate happenings in the near future of about three months or so. Method: Select 5 Runes one at a time and lay them out face down – 3 in a horizontal row and one above and one below the centre Rune. Interpretation: The 3 Runes laid out in a row represent your past, present and future as related to the problem at hand. The Rune above the centre one indicates the help you can expect to receive to solve the problem. The Rune below the centre one indicates parts of the problem that cannot be changed and must simply be accepted. It is best to turn over the centre Rune first. This will show you the problem as it currently is. It can also indicate your frame of mind. A negative Rune here might suggest that you are in an extremely agitated state of mind. The Rune to the left of the centre Rune will represent your past and tell you more about what caused you to be in the situation you are in. Don’t read the Rune to

Anglo-Saxon Gods such as Odin, Freya, Tiw, Ing, etc may be appropriate to your needs - but you are warned against invoking Thor the god of thunder, who has a habit of being vengeful and unforgiving. For initial guidance, the early Norse and Anglo-Saxon gods are detailed briefly in the Larousse EncyclopĂŚdia of Mythology, available in most library reference sections. 8

this life, your previous existence, and any future incarnation you may expect. It is similar in layout to the 5 stone cast, but different in outcomes. If practising this cast, one should be aware that not everyone will experience reincarnation, and it is perhaps better not to know. Also, not everyone believes in reincarnation – hence the importance in talking to the Querent before hand to avoid any embarrassment! I have found this to give startling results often invoking longforgotten memories and giving the Querent some discomfiture even nightmares - for weeks afterwards. Be aware of this and talk to the Querent before doing any rune cast of this nature. I cannot stress this enough. Speak the issue and draw five runes in the same manner as before. Cast them Right, Centre, Left, Near, Far. Right represents your birth and childhood and will point out your
talents, attributes and shortcomings. Centre represents your present life and will indicate actions you must take to improve
your present life and thus deserve another. Left shows what your future in this life holds for you if you follow the advice given.
Near gives an indication of your past life, its character and your behaviour. And finally, Far gives an indication of whether
you will reincarnate and if so, what kind of person you will be The runes featured in these pictures are from

But a good Herbal will tell you that Lady’s Mantle is also known as “a woman’s best friend” because it regulates periods and clears inflammations of the female organs. What better association for the rune of growth and fertility? And the association with Moonstone (also known as Wolf’s Eye, Fish’s Eye or Water Opal) .is due to the gem’s supposed ability to promote growth and maintain a high energy level in its user.

The rune meanings are augmented by further interpretations for upright, reverse and converse presentation, and all these meanings and interpretations are detailed in the following pages. The runes are traditionally associated with gemstones or crystals, trees, plants or herbs, colours, and the elements. Sometimes these associations are pretty obvious. For example Berkanan, The Rune of Growth and Fertility is associated with the fast-growing birch tree, its colour is dark green as are birch leaves, and its element is Earth from which the

Archaeological runologists call these the “Anglo-Friesian” runes because they were also in use in the Friesia region of the Netherlands. The runes all have names that were significant to the ancient Germanic tribes, Norsemen and Anglo-Saxon pagans who used them. Some were named for gods, like Ing and Tiw; some for animals and plants such as the Ox or a Birch twig; some for natural features - a lake, or hail; some for everyday objects that they used e.g. a carriage and an archer’s bow; and some for timeless concepts such as joy, a gift, and humanity.

the Elder Futhark, and from the AngloFriesian Futhark the forerunner of the Anglo-Saxon runes later used throughout Britain. I have not included the 9 later runes added by runecarvers in the Northumbria region of Britain from around 700AD. I will get around to doing that one day . . . especially since my ancestry is both in Scandinavia and Northumbria! In the meantime, wherever you see the term “Anglo-Saxon” I am referring to the runes first appearing in Britain, probably in the 3rd Century AD.

he“Elder Futhark” is a composite of the runic symbols most commonly used in northern Europe. The names of the runes of the Elder Futhark are speculative recreations of what linguists call “proto-Germanic”, which stems from “proto-Indo-European”. There are many versions of the runic alphabets. Each has variations in names, shapes, esoteric meanings and magical uses. One should not mix futharks, or the intent or meaning becomes confused. The Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and the Younger (or Scandinavian) Futhark are the most frequently seen versions of the runic alphabets and on rune sets in use today.
