Blinken speaks to Afghan President Ghani, reaffirms US support to peace process During the call, Blinken highlighted robust diplomatic support for the peace process focused on helping the parties to the conflict achieve a durable and just political settlement and permanent and comprehensive ceasefire that benefits all Afghans.

HiIndia Newsdesk Newly-appointed Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday spoke to Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani and reaffirmed US’ commitment to support the Afghan peace process while preserving the progress made by the war-torn country over the last 20 years in human rights, civil liberties and women empowerment. Spoke with Afghan President Ghani “about our commitment to an enduring US-Afghan partnership. I reiterated the US desire for all Afghan leaders to support this historic opportunity for peace while preserving the progress made over the last 20 years,” Blinken tweeted soon after the call. During the call, Blinken highlighted robust diplomatic support for the peace process focused on helping the parties to the conflict achieve a durable and just political settlement and permanent and comprehensive ceasefire that benefits all Afghans, State Department spokesperson Ned Price said in a readout of the call.

Biden admin to remain committed to a strong US-India bilateral relationship Secretary Austin noted the great strides made in the US-India defence relationship, and he pledged to work collaboratively with the Defence Minister to sustain progress. HiIndia Newsdesk The Biden administration is going to remain committed to a strong bilateral relationship with India, the Pentagon has said, a day after US defence secretary Lloyd Austin spoke for the first time with defence minister Rajnath Singh. “The Secretary made it very clear that we're going to remain committed to a strong US-India bilateral relationship,” Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters at

US radicals pose ‘rising threat’

HiIndia Newsdesk Warning that the deadly rampage of the Capitol this month may not be an isolated episode, the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday said publicly for the first time that the US faced a growing threat from “violent domestic extremists” emboldened by the attack. The department’s terrorism alert did not name specific groups that might be behind any future attacks, but it made clear that their motivation would include anger over “the presidential transition, as well as other perceived grievances fuelled by false narratives”, a clear reference to the accusations made by former President Donald J. Trump and echoed by Right-wing groups that the election was stolen.

a news conference here on Thursday. “(They) had a good chat yesterday. They discussed a lot of issues, including our two nations' response to the coronavirus,” Kirby said responding to a question on the maiden phone call between Austin and Singh. Retired general Austin became the first African-American to lead the Pentagon when the Senate confirmed him as US Defence Secretary on January 22.

Biden allows US aid for abortion providers and expands Obamacare

HiIndia Newsdesk US President Joe Biden has reversed a ban on federal funds going to international aid groups that perform or inform about abortions. He said the ending of the so-called Mexico City Policy reverses former President Trump's "attack on women's health access". The memo orders a review of a Trump-era policy blocking funding for US clinics that offer abortion referrals as well. Mr Biden also signed an edict expanding the Obamacare insurance programme. "I'm not initiating any new law, any new aspect of the law," he said in the White House Oval Office on Thursday, responding to criticism that he was governing by executive order, rather than congressional legislations. "There is nothing new that we're doing here other than restoring the Affordable Care Act ... to the way it was before Trump became president," he added.

What is the global abortion 'gag rule'?

The Mexico City Policy was first enacted by Republican President Ronald Reagan in 1984 and has been repeatedly renewed by Republicans and cancelled by Democrats. For decades, the US has barred money from being spent on overseas abortions but the Mexico City policy takes that a step further. It prevents federal funds from going to organisations that provide abortions, abortion counselling or advocate for the legal right to abortion.

US expresses concern over Pakistan SC acquitting Daniel Pearl’s killers

HiIndia Newsdesk US Secretary of State Tony Blinken has expressed concern over Pakistan Supreme Court’s decision acquitting those involved in the sensational kidnapping and murder of Daniel Pearl in 2002 and said that the judgement is an affront

to terrorism victims everywhere. In a strongly worded statement, Blinken urged Pakistan to explore all legal options to ensure that the killers of Pearl are brought to justice. “The United States is deeply concerned by the Pakistani Supreme Court’s decision to acquit those involved in Daniel Pearl’s kidnapping and murder and any proposed action to release them,” he said. Pearl, the 38-year-old South Asia bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal, was abducted and beheaded while he was in Pakistan investigating a story in 2002 on the links between the country’s powerful spy agency ISI and al-Qaeda. Sheikh and his three aides – Fahad Naseem, Sheikh Adil and Salman Saqib – were convicted and sentenced in the abduction and murder case of Pearl in Karachi in 2002. Pakistan’s Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed appeals against the acquittal of British-born al-Qaeda terrorist Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh in the kidnapping and murder case of Pearl and ordered his release, a judgement denounced by the American journalist’s family as “a complete travesty of justice.”

Some goons shamed us, don’t use it to negate pain of farmers: Amarinder Singh

Amarinder Singh said, "The Red Fort incident cannot and should not be used by BJP or anyone else to negate the pain of the farmers, who have been camping out in the bitter Delhi cold for more than two months now. Can’t the BJP see their tears?"

HiIndia Newsdesk The incident was a shame on all of us, an insult to our nation. That the symbol of Independent India should be damaged and sullied

in this manner is not something any proud Indian can sanctify. It is a disrespect also to our revered Nishan Sahib, which was used by some goons (they could not have been farmers) to undermine a peaceful protest. As a Punjabi, I feel insulted on behalf of my community, which is bringing its sons wrapped in the national flag almost every second day from the nation’s borders. But it would be wrong to malign the whole community, whose patriotism can never be questioned or doubted. It would also be wrong to defame the farmers, who have been protesting peacefully now for months, first in Punjab and for the past two-plus months at Delhi’s borders, without causing an iota of trouble. It is the sons of these very farmers who are sacrificing their lives protecting our country’s borders. Those who indulged in the violence at Red Fort were not genuine farmers but some anti-social elements. Some of them have been identified, like this actor Deep Sidhu, who has been named by Delhi Police as a key perpetrator.

Shashi Tharoor, 6 Journalists Face Sedition For Farmers' Protest Posts HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Multiple police cases have been filed in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh against Congress MP Shashi Tharoor and six journalists for allegedly "misreporting" and "spreading disharmony" on Republic Day when a tractor rally by farmers turned violent in Delhi. All of them face charges including sedition, criminal conspiracy and promoting enmity under the Indian Penal Code. One First Information Report (FIR) was filed in Noida and four FIRs in Madhya Pradesh's Bhopal, Hosangabad, Multai and Betul.

Farm Laws Paused, Government Sourav stable, removed from "No Defence Needed For Will Respect Supreme Court Order: oxygen support Jokes": Comic Kunal Kamra HiIndia Newsdesk President Indian cricket board chief Sourav On Contempt Notice HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: Three controversial laws at the core of farmer protests have been paused by the Supreme Court and the government will respect the order, President Ram Nath Kovind said today while strongly defending the measures. The government is trying to tackle misgivings over the laws, he told parliament in his traditional budget session address, which was boycotted by 19 opposition parties in support of the farmers' demand that the three laws be repealed. Addressing a joint sitting of parliament on the opening day of the Budget session, the President also condemned as "very unfortunate" the violence during the Republic Day tractor rally by farmers in Delhi.

India Today takes Rajdeep off-air for two weeks

HiIndia Newsdesk Prime-time anchor Rajdeep Sardesai has been yanked off-air for two weeks by his employers India Today after he tweeted that Punjab farm protester Navneet Singh had been “killed allegedly in police firing” during the Republic Day tractor rally and that farmers had told him “the ‘sacrifice’ will not go in vain.” Sardesai also repeated his statement on-air. The news anchor, though, retracted his statements on Twitter and on-air after the police released a video showing Singh losing control of the tractor and the vehicle overturning near New Delhi’s ITO crossing.

Ganguly's health condition is stable and he had a good sleep on Thursday night, while doctors are planning to carry out requisite medical examinations on him on Friday, a senior official of the hospital where he is admitted said. The former India captain underwent another angioplasty on the previous day. Two more stents were implanted to clear his clogged coronary arteries. "Sourav Ganguly's health condition is stable. He had a good sleep at night. All his vital parameters are normal. Doctors will carry out necessary tests on him in the morning. "Senior doctors will carry out a thorough checkup following which a decision will be taken whether to move him to another ward," the hospital official told.

Opposition to boycott President’s speech at joint Parliament session

HiIndia Newsdesk A total of 19 opposition parties will be boycotting the Presidential address ahead of the Budget Session on Friday in support of the ongoing farmers’ protest. With the boycott, the Budget Session is set to be stormy as both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha come for a joint sitting for the President’s address. Congress is leading a group of 16 political parties in boycotting the Presidential address that would mark the beginning of the Budget Session. The Opposition is all set to pull up the Modi government on issues ranging from recession, job losses, handling of the Covid crisis, Ladakh standoff with China apart from the farm crisis. Akali Dal and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will be boycotting the address separately. Mayawati-led BSP will also be boycotting the President’s address on Friday.

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: There is no defence needed for jokes, comedian Kunal Kamra said in his reply to a contempt notice by the Supreme Court for his criticism of the top court in tweets last year. Mr Kamra, who did not offer an apology in his response, said that "jokes are not reality and do not claim to be so". "There is no defence needed for jokes and it is based on the comedian's perception," Mr Kamra said, adding that his posts on Twitter were not made with the intention of "diminishing faith of people in judiciary".

Anna Hazare To Begin Protest From Tomorrow In Support Of Farmers HiIndia Newsdesk Ahmednagar (Maharashtra): Social activist Anna Hazare on Thursday said he will begin an indefinite fast at his hometown in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar from tomorrow. He has also urged his supporters to protest from their respective locations. "I have been agitating for important demands of farmers for the last four years. It seems like the government is not taking proper decision on the issue of farmers. The government is not sensitive towards the farmers," the 84-year-old activist stated in a press statement. We have kept our demands before the Central Government time and again. I have written letters to the Prime Minister and Union Agriculture Minister five times in the last three months.

Biden admin delivers early win for H4 spouses of H1B workers

Biden appoints 2 Indian Americans to leadership posts at US mission to UN

The decision to rescind the proposed rule came on the same day Biden signed an executive order calling for the practice of racial equity in the US. HiIndia Newsdesk

"Withdrawn". A single word on a thick bureaucratic file on the seventh day of the Biden administration delivered a huge win for spouses of workers on H1B visas in the US who spent the last four years worried sick that their work authorisations would be killed off. This brings to an end years of effort by the Donald Trump administration to rescind an Obama era regulation that allowed a certain subset of spouses of H1B visa holders to work in the US. "Removing H-4 Dependent Spouses from the Class of Aliens Eligible for Employment Authorization" was a Trumpian agenda pursued by White House immigration hawks with a great deal of inter-agency collaboration and discipline. It was being reviewed by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA).

IFIICC eyes strengthening business ties with India, UAE, Israel

HiIndia Newsdesk Dubai | The International Federation of the Indo-Israel Chambers of Commerce (IFIICC) is planning to boost India’s strong historical ties with the UAE and Israel as it expects knowledge sharing, strategic partnerships and cultural bonds will help establish business relationships among the three countries.

Guru Nanda, Indian American Entrepreneur Founded Company Donates 6.5M Masks Across U.S. HiIndia Newsdesk

BUENA PARK, CA- Guru Nanda, a Buena Park, Calif.based manufacturer of farmto-home aromatherapy and other health and wellness products founded by Indian American entrepreneur Puneet Nanda, has donated more than 6.5 million masks to various charities and non-profits across the country. The masks will be used to help these organizations in their efforts to protect frontline workers, other staff and family, patients and the larger communities they support during the ongoing Covid-19-crisis, the company said in a press release. The company also donated a total of 163,128 sets of toothpastes and toothbrushes to the organizations.

The IFIICC was launched in Dubai last month on the back of the Abraham Accords, the recent peace agreement between the UAE and Israel, Gulf News reported. It aims to promote innovation, commerce, investment and goodwill between the diasporas of India and Israel around the world. The UAE, which is home to an estimated three million Indian expatriates, is a great place to begin with, says Merzi Sodawaterwala, Chairman of IFIICC. “Given the fact that India and the emirates have had centuries of trade, while India and Israel have had a 28year history, this gives India a very strong basis to leverage a trilateral relationship,” he says. “The UAE’s business-friendly regulatory framework, the enterprising Indian diaspora and Israel’s innovative startup culture can jump-start a model of business creation that can benefit the world.” Areas of collaboration among the three countries include scientific research, IT, agritech and food security, healthcare, medtech and sustainability. Kenneth D’Costa, Managing Director at Barakat, a key player in the UAE’s $40 billion (Dh147 billion) F&B market, believes there is a significant trade opportunity in the areas of food and agriculture. “The key business sectors identified by us are alternative dairy and proteins, organic fruits and vegetables and food waste management,” he says. “We are in discussion with about 8-10 growers and food companies from different regions of Israel.” Sodawaterwala wants to leverage the heft and influence of the Indian diaspora to scale innovative Israeli businesses, particularly start-ups and SMEs. India has the largest diaspora in the world with 32 million non-resident Indians (NRIs) and people of Indian origin (PIOs), according to the country’s Ministry of External Affairs. “Israeli founders have historically lacked the opportunity for market exits. Through this platform, Indian businesses can help commercialise Israeli technologies and grow them to the stage of a unicorn,” Sodawaterwala says. Israel was placed sixth on the Bloomberg Innovation Index in 2020. Edly Dollar, Founder of the Israeli impact fund Copia Agro & Food, is now looking for joint ventures with Indian entrepreneurs that monetise scientific innovations from research institutes both in Israel and India. “Such technological breakthroughs may be developed at labs in our two countries and applied globally, after field tests in pertinent locations. This is a reality in which joint ventures with the UAE can be constructed,” he said.

Aditi Gorur

Sohini Chatterjee

HiIndia Newsdesk United Nations: President Joe Biden appointed two Indian Americans, Sohini Chatterjee and Aditi Gorur, to the leadership team of the US mission to the UN on Tuesday. The mission said that the appointments “reflect President Biden and Vice President (Kamala) Harris’s commitment to building a talented, experienced, and diverse administration that looks like America”. Chatterjee, who had served in former President Barack Obama’s administration focusing on global development issues, will be a senior policy adviser. Gorur, an expert on UN peacekeeping, will be a policy adviser. Biden, who has announced a return to greater involvement with international organisations, appointed career diplomat, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, as the Permanent Representative to the UN and she is awaiting confirmation by the Senate in that role.

Kerala students pursuing medicine in China left in the lurch

HiIndia Newsdesk Thiruvananthapuram : Around 10,000 students from Kerala, studying medicine and allied courses in China, are facing an uncertain future as the Chinese government is not allowing them back in the country to resume their studies. After the Covid pandemic struck Wuhan and other parts of China, several students had come back home and the first reported Covid case in India was a medical student in Wuhan who had come to her hometown Thrissur on vacation. Susan Ann Varghese of Thiruvananthapuram and a final year medical student at China, told that she “cannot go back as the Chinese government is not allowing the Indian students to return and the universities which had taken initiative to send us back home are not responding”. Students have paid the final year fee of Rs 3.25 lakh and the classes are being conducted online. However the National Medical Commission will not recognise medical courses conducted online and this will create major problems for the students as delayed classes will lead to the course being left incomplete. Madhavan Nair, of Kozhikode in Kerala, whose son Rohan Nair is also a final year medical student in China, told IANS: “We have been left in the lurch there is no progress on the classes of my son. We have taken huge loans to send him to China and I don’t know if his course will be recognised at the end.

Jaishankar yellow-cards China for ‘We are with you, Rakesh ji’, says Delhi violating pacts, spells out the India way CM Kejriwal amid unrest at Ghazipur HiIndia Newsdesk External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s address at a conference on Thursday makes it amply clear that the only way forward for the two countries is for their armies to go back to their permanent bases along the 1597-km Line of Actual Control (LAC) in East Ladakh as they existed in April 2020. Jaishankar’s speech lucidly spells out that India and China are competitors in both the Asian and global context and that New Delhi is not the regional south Asian player that Beijing wants it to be. The three mutual and eight broad propositions spelt out by the minister, who was India’s longestserving envoy to China over the past decade, are reminders to Beijing that the bilateral relationship between the two Asian powers is not a one-way street. The proposition that India and China are civilization states, something that Beijing seems so reluctant to acknowledge about New Delhi, is designed to remind the Middle Kingdom that all civilization states have their ups and downs in their history and nothing is permanent.

Actor Deep Sidhu’s Role Under Scrutiny After Tractor Rally Violence

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: After a day of clashes during a farmers’ tractor protest on Republic Day on Tuesday, the role of a Punjabi actor, Deep Sidhu, has come under scrutiny. The actor-activist, once known to be close to movie star-turned-BJP MP Sunny Deol, was last seen at Red Fort, which became the epicenter of the chaos that descended upon Delhi. Farmers have accused him of planting the “Nishan Sahib” or Sikh religious flag at the Red Fort, an act that has provoked outrage, especially on social media. Images of protesters armed with sticks occupying the 400-year-old Mughal monument has drawn criticism even from those who backed the farmers’ agitation. In a post on Facebook last evening, Deep Sidhu has defended the act, saying the protesters did not remove the national flag but put up the “Nishan Sahib” as a symbolic protest. He also claimed that it was a spontaneous act. “To symbolically register our protest against the new farm legislation, we put up ‘Nishan Sahib’ and a farmer flag and also raised the slogan of Kisan Mazdoor Ekta,” said Mr Sidhu. He asserted that the national flag was not removed from the flagpole at the Red Fort.

HiIndia Newsdesk Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels Virat Kohli has instilled a fighting attitude in the current Indian team, which does not get bullied by adversities. R-Day chaos points to a major intelligence lapse

HiIndia Newsdesk The unprecedented scenes of chaos in Delhi on Republic Day point to a massive intelligence failure and also put a question mark on the strategy adopted by the Union home ministry to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control, many felt. Protesting farmers broke through police barricades and checkposts, clashed with cops and entered the heart of the capital after deviating from the designated routes, prompting the law-enforcers to fire tear smoke canisters and lathicharge those descending on Delhi on tractors. One farmer died near central Delhi’s ITO after his tractor overturned, the police said. Protesters, however, claimed that he was killed in police firing. At many places the police were outnumbered as thousands of farmers fought through barricades and tear gas to enter the Red Fort complex. They were on foot and in tractors. As they headed towards central Delhi, many of them were heard raising slogans: “Delhi is not just for Modi and his ministers but ours too.”

Farmers enter Red Fort, hoist flag; one cop injured The chaos unfolded despite the police giving farmers camping at Delhi’s three borders -- Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur -- permission to hold rallies on specific routes, only after the official Republic Day parade at Rajpath.

Groups of protesting farmers on Tuesday entered Red Fort after breaching police barricades, attacking personnel and even vandalising a bus at ITO. Meanwhile, one protester has been killed near ITO after he was shot at and the tractor he was driving turned turtle. A cop has also been injured at Red Fort. As per the agreement, farmers were to remain in the adjoining areas of the borders and not venture towards Central Delhi.

HiIndia Newsdesk The police resorted to lathicharge and tear gas to control the protesters after they breached the barricades at the three borders. Meanwhile, senior farmer Balbir Singh Rajewal said farmers were following the pre-decided route. No one from the Sankyukt Kisan Morcha went to the Outer Ring Road. “We

condemn violence against farmers, appeal to all to maintain peace,” Rajewal told. Thousands of farmers knocked down barricades at Delhi’s borders, clashed with the police and entered the heart of the national capital on Republic Day as they took out a tractor rally against the government’s new agricultural laws. Amid the chaos, protesters were tear-gassed and baton-charged. The disarray was caused after the protesters - allowed to hold the “Kisaan Parade” between 12 and 5 PM - began the march much before time and deviated from the agreed routes.

Joe Biden’s Winning Campaign Backed By “Dark Money” Donations

Tata In Talks To Launch Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine In India: Report

HiIndia Newsdesk Tata Group’s healthcare venture is said to have started initial discussions with Moderna Inc for a partnership to launch its COVID-19 vaccine in India, reported on Monday. Tata Medical & Diagnostics could team up with the India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research to carry out clinical trials of Moderna’s vaccine candidate in India, the report said, citing officials familiar with the matter. Moderna did not respond to Reuters request for a comment outside business hours, while Tata Medical & Diagnostics did not immediately respond. Unlike Pfizer’s vaccine, which must be kept at minus 70 degrees Celsius or below, Moderna’s can be stored at normal fridge temperatures, making it more suited for poorer countries such as India where cold chains are limited. Data released in November from Moderna’s late-stage study showed it was 94.1% effective with no serious safety concerns. The shot was approved for use in the United States in December and in Europe earlier this month. India mandates that any vaccine maker must conduct an additional local study if it has to be considered for what the country calls the world’s biggest vaccination programme.

China warns Taiwan independence 'means war' as US pledges support HiIndia Newsdesk

China has in a strong statement warned that attempts by Taiwan to seek independence from Beijing "means war".

The warning comes days after Beijing stepped up military activities and sent warplanes near the island. It also comes amid closer ties between Taiwan and the US, which welcomed a new administration just last week. In a statement on Thursday, the US reaffirmed Washington's commitment to supporting Taiwan's defence capability. China sees democratic Taiwan as a breakaway province, but Taiwan sees itself as a sovereign state. "We are seriously telling those Taiwan independence forces: those who play with fire will burn themselves, and Taiwan independence means war," Chinese defence ministry

spokesman Wu Qian said at a press conference on Thursday. He also defended China's recent military activities saying they were "necessary actions to address the current security situation in the Taiwan Strait and to safeguard national sovereignty and security". The US responded later on Thursday. "We find that comment unfortunate and certainly not commensurate with our intentions to meet our obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act," Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters, in the first statement by the new administration on China-Taiwan relations.

Britain said it was adding the United Arab Emirates, Burundi and Rwanda to its coronavirus travel ban list because of worries over the spread of a more contagious and potentially vaccine-resistant COVID-19 variant first identified in South Africa. “This means people who have been in or transited through these countries will be denied entry, except British, Irish and third country nationals with residence rights who must self-isolate for ten days at home,” UK Transport Minister Grant Shapps said on Twitter on Thursday.

The office of Tunisian President Kais Saied said Thursday that he had been the victim of an “attempted poisoning” via a letter addressed to him and opened by an aide who fell ill. The announcement confirmed reports circulating for more than a day that someone had tried to poison the president. The statement said a letter received Monday from an “unknown sender” addressed to Saied went to the desk of his top aide, Nadia Akacha. “On opening it, she found no written document, but her health quickly deteriorated,” the statement said. “She suddenly felt weak, nearly lost her vision and got a migraine headache.” Another official in the room felt a bit ill, it added. The aide was placed in Tunisia’s military hospital and the letter sent for analysis by a special service of the Interior Ministry, the statement said. The spokesman for the Tunis prosecutor’s office, Mohsen Dali, said a special brigade was investigating the case. Saied, a former law professor and political outsider, was elected to the presidency in 2019.

HiIndia Newsdesk Juventus footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is being investigated by Italian police over a trip he allegedly took to celebrate his girlfriend's birthday. He is accused of breaking Covid-19 rules by travelling between the regions of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta. Now-deleted footage posted on social media showed the couple on a snowmobile in a mountain resort, the same day Georgina Rodriguez turned 27.

Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was expelled from the primary membership of the Nepal Communist Party by a splinter faction led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” on Sunday for alleged anti-party activities, further intensifying the infighting within the ruling NCP. The decision was taken at a standing committee meeting of the faction led by former Prime Ministers Prachanda and Madhav Kumar Nepal at Parisdanda in Koteshwor after Oli failed to explain his recent actions, including the dissolution of Parliament, said Ganesh Shah, a senior standing committee member of the party. In December, the splinter group had removed 68-year-old Oli, one of the two chairmen of the ruling party, as the cochair. The Prachanda-led faction had on January 15 sought clarification from Oli alleging that he was carrying out activities that go against the party’s policies.

As a culturally rich country, what did we lack artistically so as to make our global representation so caricatured and dismal? Futureproof was the answer I had been looking for all along,” Rahman said in a statement.

SP Balasubrahmanyam honoured with Padma Vibhushan posthumously

Feel lucky that I got to portray a real-life hero

on Jeet Ki Zid

In this exclusive chat, Sadh talks about Jeet Ki Zid, playing a real-life character, donning the uniform and more. Excerpts from the conversation: Why is Jeet Ki Zid special to you? Zid is special because it is a story about two beautiful and inspiring people – Major Deep Singh Senger and his wife Jaya. It’s humbling that we were allowed and able to make this and get inspired. I feel that there is so much to learn and imbibe from the Indian Army and its stories. As an actor and an Indian, I feel privileged to be a part of Zid.

Michael B. Jordan and Lori Harvey, are ‘totally invested’ in their relationship

In Jeet Ki Zid, you play a war hero. What’s the best part about doing such roles? Firstly, just wearing the Indian armed forces uniform changes you and your mindset. This particular story of Major Senger and Jaya is a story of togetherness. How they slug it out together, and how they don’t give up on each other. It might be a story with the backdrop of the Indian Army, but primarily it is about these two beautiful, strong-willed heroes. So, the excitement comes from being able to portray a real-life hero. I feel lucky that I got to do this.

Ajinkya brings the calmness, of course, even if he buys-in the plan, he makes sure he executes it to the T,” Arun said. “He will follow the match from the dressing room. But he absolutely hates it when a bowler concedes a boundary. He doesn’t want bowlers to concede a run. “That’s what he wants. When we bowl, we should keep on taking wickets. Start your day with a detox drink

One common mistake that a majority of people make is to start their day with normal milk-based tea or coffee, which is highly acidic. Instead of tea or coffee, we should start with any herbal tea, which can be freshly made at home with all natural ingredients like jeera, tulsi, pudina, ginger, ajwain, cinnamon and others.

Intermittent fasting

Our body has an innate ability to heal itself. At times all we need to do is give an opportunity to our gut and digestive system to rest and do the healing. One of the easy ways is to practise a minimum 12 hours of intermittent fasting. So, let us try to finish our dinner by 8pm and post-dinner we eat nothing for 12 hours.

Yoga or breathing exercises daily

Each and every cell in our body needs just two things — proper oxygen and right nutrition. And one of the ways of providing right oxygen to each of our trillion cells is proper breathing exercises and yoga. Not only will this make our lungs and respiratory system stronger, it will improve blood circulation at the cellular level and, thereby, create a robust and healthy system as a whole.

Walk An hour a day

It all begins with a cell. And one of the most important ways to keep a cell healthy is proper microcirculation. By being physically active or by just walking regularly we can ensure good blood circulation at the cellular level. We need a habit of walking every day for at least an hour.

19

Empty stomach fruits

After your detox drink, the best way to kick-start your day is to have fruits. Focus on seasonal fruits. Many people have the habit of having fruits either with or after breakfast, which is not recommended.

in 2021 The year 2020 was a year unlike any other. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, the importance of immunity in fighting the virus, maintaining holistic health, and the role of nutrition in boosting immunity has caught the attention of the world at large. We can hope and expect 2021 to be a year that will bring good health and peace to all of us. However, as individuals, each one of us have enormous power to take complete charge of our health and well-being. Our health is just a by-product of our habits. While moving into the new year, let us ensure to build eight simple and very effective habits which are more sustainable and can help us become healthier and happier human beings.

Eat more colourful plant foods

Eating more plant foods definitely makes us healthier but the key is to have a habit of eating a variety of colourful fruits and vegetables. Different colours have different health benefits and different disease reversing compounds. So maybe have a bowl of salad before meals, or a salad in the evening, in whatever way you wish to, but start having fruits and veggies of different colours.

Minimise artificial junk and packaged foods

In the last decade we have seen a sharp rise in lifestyle diseases like diabetes, obesity, fatty liver, high cholesterol, hypertension and many others. And one factor that has driven this the most is our shift from real and natural foods to more artificial and packaged foods. So, one of the conscious habits that we need to inculcate is drastically minimise or avoid our intake of those foods that will do us just harm and no good.

Living in the present moment

One important factor which I aspire to change in majority of patients when I meet them is their habit of not living in the present moment. Unfortunately, today the majority of people are living in stress, which can be avoided and managed well. There are so many techniques like meditation, breathing and mindfulness that can help us in living in the present moment and avoiding stress.

Once you and your friends are vaccinated,

Can you quit social distancing? Now that the vaccines are arriving, people are starting to dream. They say things like, “The second everyone in my family is vaccinated, we’re going on a big trip to Asia!” or “As soon as my five closest friends and I get the shot, I’m spending a weekend at a cabin with them. No masks, no social distancing.” While many of us are thinking about the Covid-19 pandemic in binary terms — there’s “life before I get the shot” and “life after I get the shot” — experts are cautioning us to think more gradually. Not everything will change the second that syringe enters your arm. “Realistically, it’s definitely not going to be an on/off switch on normal,” said Eleanor Murray, a Boston University epidemiologist.

Stage 1: You and your close friends or family are Stage 2: Your city or state has reached herd immunity In public settings, Americans should continue with masking vaccinated Let’s say you and your five closest friends have been vaccinated. Can you all rent a cabin in the woods and spend a weekend together, without masks or social distancing? The answer is: It’s likely to be fine — with some caveats. For one thing, vaccines don’t work instantly. “You need to wait at minimum two weeks after the first shot to see any kind of protection, but really you need to wait at least a week after the second shot,” said Angela Rasmussen, a virologist affiliated with Georgetown University. Then there’s the fact that the vaccine may not work equally well in everyone. Some people may have health issues that keep their bodies from mounting quite as successful an immune response. “The fact is, I’m not absolutely sure that everybody who receives the vaccine develops a protective response,” Bloom said. The Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines showed 95 percent efficacy at preventing symptomatic disease in trials after two doses. But they’re not 100 percent. There’s still a chance you could pick up the virus from one of your vaccinated friends and develop symptoms. Although the vaccines are very good at preventing the severe symptoms that land people in the hospital, experts can’t rule out the possibility that you’ll develop milder symptoms, which could conceivably turn chronic or “long-haul.”

and social distancing until 75 to 85 percent of the population is vaccinated, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He estimates that around that stage — which could come in mid-fall — the US will reach herd immunity. (This is just an estimate, though, and it’s liable to change depending on Covid-19 variants, vaccine uptake rates, and other factors.) Once a jurisdiction reaches immunity, people there will be able to safely return to venues like schools, movie theaters, and indoor dining at restaurants (though of course state and local governments have been making these decisions all throughout the pandemic, weighing the indispensability and risks of different venues). The idea is that if, say, 80 percent of people are vaccinated, that creates an “umbrella” of immunity, as Fauci put it, that “would be able to protect even the vulnerables who have not been vaccinated, or those in which the vaccine has not been effective.” From the beginning, health experts have tried to get the public to understand that when it comes to the coronavirus, nobody is truly safe until everybody is safe.

Stage 3: Herd immunity is reached internationally

Let’s manage expectations right off the bat. There’s a good chance we won’t reach this stage until 2022 or later. That’s because access to the vaccines is far from equal around the

world. “What we’re seeing is the US, Canada, and Europe are getting pretty good access to the vaccine, but if you’re hoping to go to Mozambique or something, a lot of those other countries are not necessarily able to purchase the vaccine and it’ll be a lot longer for those countries,” Murray said. That’s why it’s so important to have groups like the Covax Facility, a unique financing mechanism that has gotten 190 countries (92 of which are lower-income countries) to pool their resources to end the pandemic faster. It aims to deliver 2 billion vaccine doses by the end of this year to participating countries, regardless of their ability to pay. “It’s really going to come down to what we learn over the next few months about how well the vaccine prevents infection and transmission,” Murray said, adding that she doesn’t expect we’ll have an answer to that until March at the earliest. “If we do find that it prevents 95 percent of infections, then I’d say yeah, if you and all your friends are vaccinated, plan that Fiji vacation, go wild, spend your tourism dollars helping economies of places that can’t yet afford the vaccine!” In that scenario, we may have to wait until 2022 or later for travel to some countries to resume. For now, remember that keeping up with the measures we know curb the spread of the virus — like masking and social distancing — is the best way to ensure we can all get back to normal faster. Yes, we are all sick of them. But the more we stick to them over the next few months, the sooner we can abandon them for good.

Varun Dhawan and Natasha Dalal wear matching regal outfits on wedding day

Sleep and rest are not the same thing, although many of us incorrectly confuse the two. We go through life thinking we’ve rested because we have gotten enough sleep — but in reality we are missing out on the other types of rest we desperately need. The result is a culture of high-achieving, high-producing, chronically tired and chronically burned-out individuals. We’re suffering from a rest deficit because we don’t understand the true power of rest. The first type of rest we need is physical rest, which can be passive or active. Passive physical rest includes sleeping and napping, while active physical rest means restorative activities such as yoga, stretching and massage therapy that help improve the body’s circulation and flexibility. The second type of rest is mental rest. Do you know that coworker who starts work every day with a huge cup of coffee? He’s often irritable and forgetful, and he has a difficult time concentrating on his work. When he lies down at night to sleep, he frequently struggles to turn off his brain as conversations from the day fill his thoughts. And despite sleeping seven to eight hours, he wakes up feeling as if he never went to bed. He has a mental rest deficit. The good news is you don’t have to quit your job or go on vacation to fix this. Schedule short breaks to occur every two hours throughout your workday; these breaks can remind you to slow down. You might also keep a notepad by the bed to jot down any nagging thoughts that would keep you awake. The third type of rest we need is sensory rest. Bright lights, computer screens, background noise and multiple conversations — whether they’re in an office or on Zoom calls — can cause our senses to feel overwhelmed. This can be countered by doing something as simple as closing your eyes for a minute in the middle of the day, as well as by intentionally unplugging from electronics at the end of every day. Intentional moments of sensory deprivation can begin to undo the damage inflicted by the over-stimulating world. The fourth type of rest is creative rest. This type of rest is especially important for anyone who must solve problems or brainstorm new ideas. Creative rest reawakens the awe and wonder inside each of us. Do you recall the first time you saw the Grand Canyon, the ocean or a waterfall? Allowing yourself to take in the beauty of the outdoors — even if it’s at a local park or in your backyard — provides you with creative rest. But creative rest isn’t simply about appreciating nature; it also includes enjoying the arts. Turn your workspace into a place of inspiration by displaying images of places you love and works of art that speak to you. You can’t spend 40 hours a week staring at blank or jumbled surroundings and expect to feel passionate about anything, much less come up with innovative ideas. The final type of rest is spiritual rest, which is the ability to connect beyond the physical and mental and feel a deep sense of belonging, love, acceptance and purpose. To receive this, engage in something greater than yourself and add prayer, meditation or community involvement to your daily routine. As you can see, sleep alone can’t restore us to the point we feel rested. So it’s time for us to begin focusing on getting the right type of rest we need.

Varun Dhawan and Natasha Dalal chose traditional and equally regal outfits for their wedding ceremony. The couple colour-coordinated their outfits for the happy day. They wore off-white heavily embellished ensembles.

The Back Burner: Tomato Chutney for really lazy people This super basic tomato chutney recipe has been perfected by paring it down to the absolute basic ingredients necessary for the right taste and texture Ingredients:

Tomatoes (medium), roughly chopped – 4 Curry leaves – 1 sprig Mustard seeds – 1 tsp Hulled, split urad dal – ½ tsp Fenugreek seeds – ¼ tsp Asafoetida – a pinch Turmeric powder – a pinch Red chilli powder – ½ teaspoon Oil (preferably coconut or sesame) – 1 tbsp Salt, to taste

Method:

*Heat oil in a wok, on medium flame, and add the mustard seeds. *When they pop, turn down the flame and add the urad dal. They’ll become golden in about 20 seconds, at which point, add the fenugreek seeds and the asafoetida, quickly followed by the curry leaves, tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chilli powder and salt. *Stir to mix everything thoroughly and allow the tomatoes to cook. This shouldn’t take more than a few minutes. If you think the chutney is looking dry, add a couple of teaspoons of water. *When the tomatoes are cooked (the peel will start to come off the flesh, and the oil will separate), mash them lightly with a spoon. You can leave some chunky bits, if you like, for texture. *Serve chutney with dosas, idlis, rice or even roti.

WhatsApp treating Indian users differently, says India WhatsApp told the court that the government of India has sought certain clarification regarding its new privacy policy and it is responding to the communication.

Preferred bed temperature will vary from person-to-person and it can be difficult to maintain this ideal coolness or warmth seasonally. This product uses a two-part system (a bed cover and a control hub) to control the temperature of the bed. The hub distributes water to the "active grid cover" to add warmth or cool as needed and a paired app controls the system and provides access to sleep reports

Dodow - Sleep Aid Device

It is a cause of concern that WhatsApp is treating Indian and European users differently when it comes to privacy, the central government told the Delhi High Court on Monday. Meanwhile, WhatsApp told the court that the government of India has sought certain clarification regarding its new privacy policy and it is

responding to the communication. During the hearing of a petition challenging the new privacy policy of WhatsApp, Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma told the court that the government has sent a whole list of questions to WhatsApp. “Privacy policy offered by WhatsApp to its European users specifically prohibits the use of any information shared with a Facebook company…this clause is not present in the privacy policy offered to Indians and Indian citizens who form a very very substantial part of WhatsApp’s userbase,” said Sharma, adding that this differential treatment is “certainly a cause of concern”. Sharma added the government is also concerned about the way in which the Indian users “have been subjected to these changes rather unilaterally by not providing Indian users the ability to opt out…” He further argued that WhatsApp prima facie seems to be treating the users with an all-or-nothing approach. “This leverages the social significance of WhatsApp to force users into a bargain which may infringe on the interest in relation to information privacy and information security,” he added.

Australia says ‘inevitable’ that Microsoft says it ‘messed up’ on Google will have to pay for news pricier plan for Xbox Live Gold

The sleep aid from Dodow uses a metronome and lightning to help people fall asleep. The surface of the unit is touch-sensitive. This allows people to choose either an eight-minute or 20-minute sleep "exercise." A small light glows and people are tasked with syncing their breathing rate with the beam as it expands and contracts. "Dodow gradually slows down your breathing from 11 to six breaths per minute," according to the manufacturer.

illumy – The Smart Sleep Mask

Sleep masks are a popular sleep aid for many; especially light sleepers and frequent fliers. The illumy Smart Sleep Mask provides a technological twist on the classic sleep mask. Similar to traditional sleep masks, the design blocks out external light to minimize sleep disturbances. But on the inside, the model features a pair of lights to simulate a sunrise or sunset to ease people to sleep and gently wake them. People are able to optimize their sunset and sunrise alarm settings in the available app. This includes alarm time (with or without sound), length of sunrise, length of sunset, and more

Australia’s Treasurer Josh Frydenberg said it’s “inevitable” that Google and other tech behemoths will have to eventually pay for using media content, responding to the internet giant’s threat to disable its search engine in the country if it’s forced to pay local publishers for news. Google said Friday that a proposed law, intended to compensate publishers for the value their stories generate for the company, is “unworkable,” opposing the requirement it pay media companies for displaying snippets of articles in search results.

Microsoft Corp. backtracked on a plan to raise the price for subscriptions to Xbox Live Gold, its paid online gaming platform, after outrage from users. The price bump would have doubled the cost of an annual pass and bring a six-month subscription to $60. Last year, Microsoft removed the option for a full-year subscription at that price from the online store. The cost for a monthly subscription will also stay the same. “We messed up today and you were right to let us know,” the company said in a statement. “Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.”

SpaceX launches record spacecraft in cosmic rideshare program

The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 10 a.m. EST from the Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

A veteran rocket from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s SpaceX aerospace company launched 143 spacecraft into space on Sunday, a new record for the most spaceships deployed on a single mission, according to the company. The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 10 a.m. EST from the Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

It flew south along the eastern coast of Florida on its way to space, the company said. The reusable rocket ferried 133 commercial and government spacecraft and 10 Starlink satellites to space – part of the company’s SmallSat Rideshare Program, which provides access to space for small satellite operators seeking a reliable, affordable ride to orbit, according to the company. SpaceX delayed the launch one day because

of unfavorable weather. On January 22 Musk, also chief executive of Tesla Inc ., wrote on Twitter: “Launching many small satellites for a wide range of customers tomorrow. Excited about offering low-cost access to orbit for small companies!” SpaceX has previously launched to orbit more than 800 satellites of the several thousand needed to offer broadband internet globally, a $10 billion investment it estimates could generate $30 billion annually to help fund Musk’s interplanetary rocket program, called Starship.

Drop everything and look at these adorable photographs of curious animals approaching wildlife photographers. They are sure to brighten up your day. A thread that is going viral on Twitter compiles some of the most magical shots of animals approaching wildlife photographers on the job.

Wildlife photographers have a job that requires a lot of patience and a lot of waiting. Photographers sometimes stay at one spot for hours - or even return to it day after day - until they manage to get the perfect shot. But while it sometimes takes ages for their patience to be rewarded, sometimes,

their subjects approach them with little hesitation. These photos capture some such unexpected encounters between animals and wildlife photographers. Twitter user Joaquim Campa shared the pics in a thread that has gone massively viral on the microblogging platform.

The "most beautiful woman in the world" has opened up about the hate she has received on social media. Yael Shelbia, an Israeli model and actor, recently topped TC Candler's annual "100 Most Beautiful Faces of the Year" list for the year 2020. The competition gained viral fame when six-year-old Thylane Blondeau won it a few years ago. For Ms Shelbia, however, the joy of victory was marred somewhat by the trolling she faced after winning.

normal things that haters say, nothing worth any attention." An Instagram post where Yael Shelbia thanked the people who voted for her and helped her top the list of the 100 most beautiful faces received over 4,000 comments on the photo and video sharing platform. While a large number complimented the model, others trolled her using the hashtag #UglyQueen. Ms Shelbia claims she was surprised when she won the contest and did not even know she was participating in it. " I was very surprised, I didn't even know I was participating in this contest," she said, according to Ladbible. "It's very exciting and flattering. I don't know why they chose me, I think beauty is so individual and all women are beautiful." Ms Shelbia has modelled for Kim Kardashian's KKW Beauty and Kylie Jenner's skincare range. She is currently dating Brandon Korff, the grandson of the American billionaire Sumner Redstone, who she says is "very happy" for her. "I think what makes a person beautiful is to be kind, humble and most of all - positive. When you are good, it is really shown in your eyes and eyes never lie," she says.

Meet Kyuta: The China Debuts 'Floating' Train That 10-Year-Old, 85-Kilo Can Travel At 620 Kmph Sumo In Training

Among the young sumo wrestlers lifting weights in the ring, 10-year-old Kyuta Kumagai stands out. At 85 kilograms (187 lb), Kyuta is twice the size of the other children his age and is so dominant that he wrestles, and beats, boys five or six years older. Last year, he was crowned the under-10 world champion, beating out competition from as far afield as the United Kingdom and Ukraine. His training regime, devised by his father Taisuke, is relentless. He trains six days a week, either at his local sumo club or lifting weights. He also swims and practices track and field to build up the flexibility and explosive quickness needed for sumo wrestling. Kyuta has been on the programme since his father entered him in a tournament while still in kindergarten. "I didn't teach him anything, he could do various things naturally," said Taisuke, a former amateur sumo. "There is a talent for sumo and he has that talent. He won the tournament. I thought he may have something special." A shy boy of few words, Kyuta's motivations are simple. "It is fun to beat people older than me." "I'M BETTING EVERYTHING ON THIS" When it became apparent the boy had talent, Taisuke moved the family to the Fukugawa area of Tokyo that is famous for producing sumo wrestlers. It has an abundance of clubs and Nominosukune Shrine, where the God of Sumo is said to reside, meaning there is a lot of local support for the Kumagais. Father and son use a local temple for intense one-on-one training. The sessions tend to finish with the pair wrestling up and down the carpet in front of the main shrine. Taisuke pushes Kyuta so hard that the child is often left breathless and crying. But he believes it is the only way to get the best out of his son.

China has unveiled a prototype for a new high-speed maglev train that is capable of hitting speeds of 620 kilometers per hour. Created by scientists at the Southwest Jiaotong University, the train has no wheels. Instead, the magnetic levitation train has been developed with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology, which uses magnets that allow it to 'hover' above the track, according to The Independent. This makes it look like the train is floating along the magnetized tracks and allows for faster, frictionless travel. The 69-foot prototype was unveiled in Chengdu on Wednesday. At the launch ceremony, the train was seen floating slowly along the track. "The superconductor technology the train employs could make it faster and lighter than its peers," state-run Xinhua News said in a tweet while sharing footage of the prototype.

Man Drives Car Onto Airport Runway, Says He Took A "Wrong Turn"

A motorist drove his car right onto an active airport runway in Thailand, allegedly under the influence of drugs. In the bizarre incident which unfolded on Tuesday, shocked airport staff watched as the man drove his car towards a plane which had just landed at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Footage of the incident shows the man being escorted off the runway by airport officials. The video was filmed by an unnamed member of the ground staff, reports the Daily Mail, and has gone viral on social media. "I don't know how the car made it onto the runway," the person filming can be heard saying. "The airport is such a valuable company, but they haven't even managed to stop the car from getting into the airport. This is such a safety and security breach. It's so terrible." According to news website The Thaiger,

Airports of Thailand released a press statement saying the man was "quickly" apprehended. He was later identified as one Prathipat Masakul. Mr Masakul, when apprehended by airport police, claimed that he had "taken a wrong turn". However, officials say that was high on methamphetamine. The drug was also found inside his vehicle. Squadron Leader Suthirawat Suwanwat, Director of the airport, said that staff "immediately intercepted and detained the driver to be investigated and prosecuted." While Mr Masakul has been detained on suspicion of intruding into restricted areas, illegal possession of drugs and illegally consuming and driving while under the influence of methamphetamine, airport officials are also trying to figure out how he managed to breach security and enter the runway.

Man Accidentally Throws Away Hard Drive With Bitcoin Worth $280 Million

A British man who threw away a hard drive with bitcoin worth 230 million pounds in it is once again trying to convince local authorities to let him search for the device in a landfill site. James Howells, a 35-yearold IT engineer from Newport, Wales, began mining the cryptocurrency in 2009, according to Metro News. He was cleaning his office in 2013 when he accidentally threw away the hard drive with bitcoin that is now worth a small fortune. The price of bitcoin has soared in recent years, though it was practically worthless when Mr Howells began mining it . According to news agency AFP, the virtual currency barrelled to new highs to rise more than 400 percent over the past year, before sliding some 20 percent and then settling around $36,000. Mr Howells says that he had 7,500 bitcoins which, at today's prices, would be worth more than $280 million. He claims he had two identical hard drives and mistakenly threw away the one which has the cryptographic "private key" he needs to access his bitcoin, reports CNBC. He is confident that he can recover the bitcoin even after all these years - but so far the Newport City Council has refused to let him search the landfill site he believes contains his hard drive. "There is a good chance the platter inside the drive is still intact," Mr Howells told CNBC. "Data recovery experts could then rebuild the drive or read the data directly from the platter." The 35-year-old has even offered to donate 25% of the bitcoins - worth around $70.8 million - to the city, but so far to no avail. The Newport City Council has rejected repeated requests from Mr Howells to let him look through the garbage dump which could contain the hard drive he threw out eight years ago. "The council has told Mr Howells on a number of occasions that excavation is not possible under our licencing permit and excavation itself would have a huge environmental impact on the surrounding area," a council spokesperson said. "The cost of digging up the landfill, storing and treating the waste could run into millions of pounds - without any guarantee of either finding it or it still being in working order." Mr Howells is still making a last-ditch effort to convince the council. He says he has found a hedge fund willing to fund the excavation so the council would not have to pay for it.

The rocket had failed to reach orbit last year during the first test launch

Virgin Orbit’s rocket reached orbit and the satellites were released, meaning Sunday’s mission was a success. The headline has been updated to reflect this. The original story is below. Virgin Orbit — the sister company of billionaire Richard Branson’s space tourism outfit Virgin Galactic — will try a second test of its small satellite-launching rocket later today, months after it failed to reach orbit during a first attempt. It will also be the first time that the company tries to launch working satellites into space on behalf of NASA. Sometime after 1PM ET, Virgin Orbit’s customized Boeing 747 will take off from Virgin Galactic’s spaceport in the Mojave desert and ascend to 35,000 feet with the satellite-launching rocket attached to its wing. Once it reaches a predetermined location, the rocket is supposed to drop and ignite, taking the small satellites on board the rest of the way into orbit around the Earth. Virgin Orbit says the window for launch will last until 5PM ET. There is no live stream of the test, though the company plans to tweet updates throughout the flight. It will make photos and video available sometime after the test is completed. Virgin Orbit has spent years developing this method of airborne rocket-launching, and it has performed increasingly complex flight tests since 2018. But the first full test of the company’s rocket-launching capabilities in May of last year did not go completely as planned. The plane ascended correctly, the rocket dropped, and the main engine ignited. But a problem in the liquid oxygen fuel line prevented the rocket from reaching orbit.

Facebook suspends ads for Apple reportedly planning weapon accessories until at big iMac redesign and halfleast January 22nd sized Mac Pro

Facebook has updated its Inauguration Day preparations to include a temporary ban on ads that promote weapon accessories and protective equipment at least through January 22nd “out of an abundance of caution,” the company said in a new blog post Saturday. “We already prohibit ads for weapons, ammunition and weapon enhancements like silencers. But we will now also prohibit ads for accessories such as gun safes, vests and gun holsters in the US,” the statement reads. The ban comes after Facebook was criticized for allowing posts across its platforms that promoted and organized the deadly January 6th attack on the Capitol building. The ads for military gear such as body armor and gun holsters ran next to Facebook and Instagram posts about the insurrection at the Capitol that included calls for violence, as first reported by BuzzFeed News, A group of US senators wrote a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday, urging the company to “develop and execute a Facebook policy permanently prohibiting advertisements of products... primarily designed for use in lethal tactical operations and armed combat.”

The company added the temporary ban to its Inauguration Day preparations

In addition to revamped MacBook Pros that ditch the Touch Bar and resurrect MagSafe, Apple is also said to be planning to announce its long-awaited iMac redesign this year — and a pair of Mac Pro refreshes are on the roadmap, too. This is all according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who says the iMac will undergo its most significant overhaul since 2012: Apple will reportedly ditch the chin beneath the screen, cut down on display bezels, and move to a flat-back design. The overall appearance will likely resemble the Pro Display XDR. The new iMac will replace the Intel-powered 27inch and 21.5-inch versions currently available and move the all-in-one desktop to Apple silicon. It’ll be one of the most significant visual makeovers of any Apple product this year, according to the report. The existing iMac packs top-tier specs and a beautiful screen into a design that has felt particularly outdated these last couple of years, so this change will be welcome. The last revision focused on increased speed, an improved webcam, and also added an option for a matte / nano-texture display coating. As for the Mac Pro, Apple seems to have a two-prong plan: it’ll refresh the current upgradeable tower design — Gurman says the company is considering sticking with Intel processors for this machine. But that doesn’t mean Apple is stalling on a Mac Pro that runs on its own chips. The company is also apparently at work on a completely new form factor that Gurman says is less than half the total size of the current Mac Pro. “The design will feature a mostly aluminum exterior and could invoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube,” he says.
