We always seem to be looking for the next diet, the one that will melt off weight without making us obsess over food in the process. But we don’t need fad diets at all. The answer to weight loss is simple and unchanging. We need to add more fruits and vegetables to our diets, while cutting out (or at least cutting down on) processed convenience foods and sweets. If we only focus on numbers on the scale, we’ll lose sight of what matters most to our overall health: making healthy food choices and making exercise a life-long habit. But don’t be surprised if the weight does fall off when you adopt this mindset. Even if we manage to lose weight, studies have found that most of us end up regaining the weight within a year. If you need convincing, Petitpain recommends that you stop by Barnes & Noble and take note of the shelf of diet books that extends the length of the building. Then turn around and look at your fellow Americans, most of whom will be overweight. “Somehow, there is a disconnect between the quick fixes offered by diet books, and our abilities to either try them or stick to them,” she says. “You can be overweight and physically fit, and disease risk goes down,” Petitpain says. “We know there are people in the normal weight range, but who don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables, and their disease risk goes up.” Balancing calories in with calories out still matters for dropping pounds, but obsessing about weight can be self-sabotaging. A better approach, says Mann, would be to accept our bodies — but don’t binge eat. Fight weight stigma. Exercise because it’s good for us and eat more veggies.

Clear Your Countertops If you tried to diet and succeeded for a while before going off course, know that it doesn't mean you're weak. “There’s this idea out there that dieters, or obese people, have worse self-control than everyone else, and that’s just not how it works,” Mann says. Depriving our bodies of calories wields a powerful force on our biology — and our bodies fight back with a variety of physiological processes designed to hold on to the weight. “Most people wouldn’t even have … the kind of willpower you would need to overcome all of it,” says Mann. “It’s

Science can explain why it’s so hard to lose weight and keep it off — and the results don’t support dieting. Try these strategies instead.

We’re hard on ourselves, too, and that doesn’t do us any favors. Once we’ve noticed those extra pounds, we often decide we must lose that weight really fast so we can be healthy again, says Petitpain. But because we have gained that weight over several years, it likely isn’t waving goodbye any time soon. Petitpain says a better approach is taking gradual steps toward healthy choices, such as cutting out processed food, being mindful of portion sizes, and adding physical activity to your routine. And at the end of the day, whether someone is healthy or not goes beyond being fat or thin.

1

just too much to fight against.” Resisting food cravings day in and day out is difficult. A better approach is to make tempting food more difficult to grab. If your partner insists on having candy in the house, for example, store those goodies in an opaque container, making them harder to see. When sweets are out of sight, they tend to be out of mind as well. Or forget about resisting your food cravings altogether and try a strategy Mann calls “veggies first.” This ploy is an easy one to incorporate — think a salad before dinner. Before you eat anything — whether it’s a slice of pizza or a steak — put some vegetables on your plate. Doing this adds nutrition to your diet and it fills you up, making you less likely to overindulge on fattening foods. Mann and her team tested this idea in a field study held in an elementary school. The researchers aimed to test whether kids would eat more of a vegetable if that was their only choice, or if the same vegetable was served along with other foods. First, the researchers determined what the baseline consumption of carrots was during a typical school lunch, when they were served alongside other foods. Then three months later, the same meal was served, but this time the kids were given carrots before the rest of their meal. The team found that the kids gobbled up more carrots when the vegetable was served alone, before the rest of their food. The researchers also tested their veggies-first approach on college students and keeping track of their carrot and M&M consumption depending on which food was served first. The students ate more carrots when they were served first, and ate less candy as a result. What matters in the long run for health are your overall eating habits, says Petitpain. An occasional splurge meal doesn’t negate the healthier choices you’ve made on a day-to-day basis. But know that if wellness is your goal, you do need to make a regular a habit of consuming health-promoting foods, especially those that are minimally processed. They’re easy to find because they’re generally anything you can pick up on the perimeter of the supermarket. In addition to Mann’s veggies-first plan, another healthful approach involves adding vegetables to every meal and finding creative swaps. Try adding salsa to eggs, spinach to smoothies, sliced mushrooms to burgers, or having veggies and hummus instead of chips.

o matter your weight or fitness goals, remember that wellness is more than a diet and exercise regime. Now more than ever, stress plays a vital role on our overall wellbeing. If stress and anxiety is causing poor sleep, you’ll be too tired to exercise or make the right food decisions. It can be helpful to take a step back and recognize that living through a traumatic year has likely taken a mental and physical toll. Just view weight loss as one part of an overall plan to get yourself back on track and take small

steps to boost your overall health. “Maybe it’s better to think about the overall journey, rather than being so hyper-focused on achieving an endpoint,” says Petitpain. Think about how long it took you to gain that weight and be realistic about how quickly those pounds can come off. The American Obesity Society recommends a rate of one-to-two pounds a week, which is sustainable over time, and provides some health benefits. Or find a dietician and get some personalized help.

But whatever you do, don’t start a diet if you’re not emotionally ready to commit. “If you don’t have the bandwidth right now to tackle an aggressive diet, then don’t start one, because it might be worse to try and fail. Focus instead on self-care. Try sleeping better, moving a little bit, eating a little healthier at every meal,” says Petitpain. “These are hard times; you really have to prioritize.”

Jeff Bezos to step down as Amazon CEO

HiIndia Newsdesk When Jeff Bezos founded an online bookseller named Amazon in 1994, he said the question that he was asked most frequently was “What’s the Internet?” Bezos answered by building Amazon into a $1.7 trillion behemoth that sold so many different items online it became known as “the everything store”. In the process, he upended the retail industry, turned Amazon into a logistics giant, and expanded into cloud computing, streaming entertainment and artificial intelligence-powered devices. For a time, he was the world’s richest person. On Tuesday, Bezos, 57, said his run at the top of the Seattle-based company was over. As Amazon reported its latest set of blockbuster financial results, Bezos said he planned to hand over the reins this summer and transition into the role of executive chairman. Andy Jassy, 53, the chief executive of Amazon’s cloud computing division, will be promoted to run the entire company. The change will be effective in the third quarter, which starts in July.

Marjorie Taylor Greene: House Republicans resist pressure to oust lawmaker

A US Republican lawmaker whose social media posts have provoked outrage will not be stripped of her committee posts by the party leadership.

HiIndia Newsdesk House of Representatives Republican leader Kevin McCarthy disavowed Marjorie Taylor Greene's remarks, but noted they came before she was elected. Democrats, who control the chamber, said they would vote to expel Mrs Greene from her committees on Thursday. Republicans are now seeking to oust a Democratic lawmaker from committees. Mr McCarthy, a California representative, said Mrs Greene's comments had caused "deep wounds to many". "Past comments from and endorsed by Marjorie Taylor Greene on school shootings, political violence and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories do not represent the values or beliefs of the House Republican Conference," he said in a statement on Wednesday. "I condemn those comments unequivocally. I condemned them in the past and continue to condemn them today." He added: "I made this clear to Marjorie when we met [on Tuesday]. I also made clear that as a member of Congress we have a responsibility to hold ourselves to a higher standard than how she presented herself as a private citizen."

Biden administration indicates in no hurry to engage China HiIndia Newsdesk

The Biden administration indicated on Tuesday it is in no hurry to engage with China, a strategic rival it has vowed to out-compete, and said it and would do so once it was in “lockstep” with allies and partners. President Joe Biden has spoken to many world leaders since taking office on Jan. 20, but has yet to speak to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping,

and White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told a briefing she could not say when a call might take place. Psaki said that with Antony Blinken in place as U.S. secretary of state, “there are additional layers to engage with the Chinese,” but both she and State Department spokesman Ned Price said speaking to allies and partners came first.

US drops its discrimination Morgan Wallen: US country star dropped lawsuit against Yale University by his record label over racial slur HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk The justice department on Wednesday dropped its discrimination lawsuit against Yale University that had alleged the university was illegally discriminating against Asian American and white applicants. The justice department noted in its filing that it was voluntarily dismissing the action, filed in October under the Trump administration. A judge must still sign off on it. Federal prosecutors had argued the university violated civil rights laws because it “discriminates based on race and national origin in its undergraduate admissions process”. “Yale is gratified that the US justice department has dropped its lawsuit challenging Yale College’s admissions practices,” spokesperson Karen Peart said.

US country star Morgan Wallen has been dropped by his record label, after a video emerged of him using a racial slur. Nashville's Big Loud Records said it had "made the decision to suspend Morgan Wallen's recording contract indefinitely" in light of the video. In the footage, reportedly filmed by a neighbour last weekend, the 27-year-old is seen saying goodbye to some friends and calling one of them the N-word. He has apologised for the incident."I'm embarrassed and sorry," he told, which first published the footage. "I used an unacceptable and inappropriate racial slur that I wish I could take back. There are no excuses to use this type of language, ever. I want to sincerely apologise for using the word. I promise to do better." Wallen, whose career began on the US version of TV talent show The Voice, is currently one of the biggest country stars in the US. His latest record, Dangerous: The Double Album, has been number one on the Billboard chart for the last three weeks; and his last four singles have reached number one on the country airplay chart. However, the industry's response to his use of a racial slur has been swift and decisive. Within 24 hours of TMZ publishing its video, Wallen's music was pulled from the airwaves by iHeartMedia, the largest radio station group in the US, which owns more than 850 stations, including 135 country music stations. Other major networks, including Cumulus Media and Entercom, have also removed his music from their playlists.

US welcomes farm reforms, says peaceful protests hallmark of democracy On internet restrictions at the protest sites along the border, the US including the internet, is fundamental to the freedom of expression and a administration said that it recognises that “unhindered access to information, hallmark of a thriving democracy.” HiIndia Newsdesk As the government and the farmers’ talks are yet to make any headway after several rounds of talks, the US administration under President Joseph Biden on Thursday said that it “encouraged” differences between the parties to be resolved “through dialogue”. However, it said that the United States “welcomed steps that would improve the efficiency of India’s markets and attract greater private sector investment.” This is in reference to the three farmers’ laws. Ally Jannayak Janata Party, which sustains the Manohar Lal Khattar government, is facing increased pressure f rom its core far mers’ constituency over the past few days to dump the BJP, according to the sources. Both the BJP and the JJP had hoped that the protests would peter out after the chaos during the farmers’ tractor rally on Republic Day. New Indian Drone Can Soar For 90 Days, Coordinate Attacks New Delhi: Design and development of an ultra high altitude Indian-made drone, first identified by NDTV in a 2017 report, has progressed significantly and could be available to the Indian armed forces within three to five years. The solar-powered drone, called the Infinity, is designed to cruise at an altitude of more than 65,000 feet for ninety days and would be a key element in India's unmanned drone warfare programme called CATS or the Combat Air Teaming System. ''The stratosphere will form the next phase of exploitation for the next generation of airborne platforms towards future warfare needs,'' said a source closely involved in the programme being spearheaded by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. in partnership with NewSpace, a Bengaluru based start-up closely involved in developing cutting-edge

drone solutions. Equipped with a variety of sensors including a state-ofthe-art synthetic aperture radar, Infinity will keep track of targets deep within enemy territory and coordinate attack

missions carried out by other Indian drone systems, such as the Warrior 'loyal wingman,' Alfa-S swarm drones or Hunter cruise missile which are part of India's indigenous Combat Air Teaming System. Infinity would also be able to relay a live video feed from the attack drones to monitoring stations on the ground. This would provide visual confirmation of the success of unmanned drone attacks. Video such as this was missing during the Indian Air Force attack on a Pakistani terrorist-training camp in Balakot in 2019, leading to several questions being asked on the success of the mission. Hindustan Aeronautics also says that the Infinity drone will not only support military operations but can also use its infra-red and imaging payload to provide services towards disaster management, smart cities and natural resource management.

Global Indian diaspora seeks repeal of farm laws

HiIndia Newsdesk Washington: Expressing solidarity with agitating Indian farmers, an alliance of various diaspora organisations has demanded the repeal of the three agricultural laws that have caused unrest in the country's farming community. Global Indian Progressive Alliance, which represents more than a dozen and a half diaspora organisations from across the world, demanded that the Indian government recognise the right to peaceful protest, and acknowledge the peaceful protests outside Delhi for the last 60 plus days and of prior farmer protests across the country. India has called the remarks by foreign leaders and organisations on protests by farmers as "ill-informed" and "unwarranted", asserting that the matter pertains to the internal affairs of a democratic country.

Nepal bans two Indian mountaineers for 10 years

HiIndia Newsdesk KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation in Nepal has imposed a 10-year ban on two Indian mountaineers, restricting them from climbing any peak in Nepal after they produced fake documents to say that they had climbed the Mount Everest in May 2016. Narender Singh Yadav and Seema Rani Goswami claimed that they had attempted to climb the world's tallest peak and received a certificate from Nepal's Department of Tourism which was later challenged by some summiteers, who claimed that they did not see Yadav or Goswami at the top of Mount Everest. Both Yadav and Goswami were part of a 15-member international team. Citing the claim made by the other team members, several international media houses reported that both Yadav and Goswami were not able to reach the top of Everest after their health condition deteriorated. A complaint was registered against them.

President, PM pays tribute to Gandhi on his death anniversary HiIndia Newsdesk The nation on Saturday remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 73rd death anniversary with President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the country in paying homage to the Father of the Nation. President Kovind, Vice President Naidu, Prime Minister Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, among others, also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat in Delhi. Gandhi was shot dead on this day in 1948 by Nathuram Godse. His death anniversary is observed as Martyrs’ Day. “On behalf of a grateful nation, my humble tributes to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi who embraced martyrdom this day. We should adhere to his ideals of peace, non-violence, simplicity, purity of means and humility. Let us resolve to follow his path of truth and love,” he tweeted. Groups chanting “goli maaro…” attacked farmers at the Singhu border on Friday, demanding they vacate the protest site because they had “insulted” the national flag on Republic Day, as policemen stood watching. One of the men in the group had the Tricolour crumpled up in his fist as he charged towards the farmers. The men, who claimed to be Singhu residents, wielded sticks and threw stones at the protesters, who have been sitting on a peaceful dharna on Delhi’s borders for two months to seek the repeal of three new farm laws. “They are not locals but hired goons. They were throwing stones and petrol bombs at us. They attempted to burn down our trolleys also,” quoted farmer Harkirat Mann Beniwal, 21, as saying. The attack came a day after farmers at Ghazipur thwarted an eviction attempt. A group claiming to be locals chanted slogans against the protesters at Tikri too. The chaos during the Republic Day tractor rally, when some protesters clashed with police and a group hoisted the Nishan Sahib and a peasant union flag on an empty flag pole at Red Fort, had eroded public support for the movement and demoralised the farmers.

97, but ready to take a bullet

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday told leaders of various political parties that his government has been continuously trying to resolve the issues raised by protesting farmers through talks, sources said. Addressing floor leaders of various political parties at the customary all-party meeting convened by the government for the smooth conduct of the Budget Session, the prime minister said the Centre’s proposal on the three new agriculture laws still stands, the sources said. Citing the prime minister’s address at the virtual meeting, they said Modi told the leaders that Tomar was just a phone

call away for protesting farmers and the agriculture minister had conveyed the same to farmer leaders earlier this month. The all-party meeting is convened for the government to put forth its legislative agenda before political parties. Leaders from various parties flag issues they wish to raise during the meeting. At Friday’s meeting, various leaders including Ghulam Nabi Azad of Congress, Sudip Bandyopadhyay of Trinamool Congress, Balwinder Singh Bhunder of Shiromani Akali Dal and Vinayak Raut of Shiv Sena raised the issue of protesting farmers, sources said.

Groups chanting ‘goli maaro…’ attack farmers at Singhu border HiIndia Newsdesk

A man hurls stones at the farmers protesting at the Singhu border as policemen stand by.

Unlike his two sons, Ilam Singh has never been in the army. Now, at the age of 97, he is ready to take a bullet. “Pehli goli hum khayenge, lekin ab yeh andolan nahin rukega agar krishi kanoon wapas nahin liya (I shall take the first bullet, but this movement will not stop until the farm laws have been repealed),” the Jat farmer from Muzaffarnagar told reporters at the Ghazipur protest site at 2am on Friday. He and many other protesters were up at that unearthly hour in the biting cold because a build-up of security forces had triggered rumours of an impending attack on the gathering of 50,000 people. However, the government reinforcements were withdrawn on Friday morning. “Kal hum ghabra gaye theh sarkar ki chalaki se, aaj hum jyada taqat ke sath yahan baithe hain (Yesterday, the government’s tricks scared us but today we are sitting here with more determination),” Ilam said. He was referring to the propaganda in the electronic media about the farmers “insulting the national flag” on Republic Day, when a group from the tractor rally had stormed the Red Fort and hoisted the Sikh pennant Nishan Sahib.

“They are not locals but hired goons. They were throwing stones and petrol bombs at us. They attempted to burn down our trolleys also,” quoted farmer Harkirat Mann Beniwal, 21, as saying. But the heavy-handed action at Ghazipur border, where the administration cut off water and power supply and ordered the protesters to vacate, and Friday’s attack at Singhu where the so-called locals chanted the slogan “goli maaro… (shoot them down)” that was the clarion call for the Delhi riots last year have angered the farmers, instead of cowing them down, and infused new energy into the movement. These have also encouraged farmer union leaders to name the RSS-BJP as the villains. Union leader Yudhveer Singh said: “We do not need lectures on nationalism from those who had refused to hoist the national flag at their headquarters till some years ago. Farmers send their children to the border to fight and have received their bodies draped in the Tricolour.”

Barricades, Barbed Wires At Farmers India registers 8,635 fresh Covid Protest Sites; Water Shortage Alleged cases, the lowest in eight months HiIndia Newsdesk

Security has been stepped up near Delhi borders.

New Delhi: Multiple barricades and barbed wire fences have been put up at the protest sites near Delhi’s borders with Haryana and Uttar Pradesh as farmers continue their sit-in against the three contentious agricultural laws. Digging of trenches and nails on roads, and temporary

internet suspension are part of “attacks” being organised by the government, the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of farmer groups, has said. Security has been stepped at the three protest epicentres - Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri - nearly a week after the city saw unprecedented violence as farmers took out a massive tractor rally on Republic Day. “India was saddened by insult to tricolour on Republic Day,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday in his monthly radio address. Protesters at Singhu near DelhiHaryana border have alleged water shortage amid heightened security, and what they define as “extreme” measures. The agitation-hit area has been divided into five zones where vehicular movement is blocked.

Indian embassy advises Indians in Myanmar to avoid unnecessary travel

HiIndia Newsdesk The Indian embassy in Yangon has asked all Indian citizens residing in Myanmar to take due precautions and avoid unnecessary travel, in an advisory issued following the military coup and subsequent political developments in the country. Myanmar’s powerful military grabbed power in a coup against the civilian government and imposed a state of emergency after detaining Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of her National League

for Democracy (NLD) in the early hours on Monday. “In view of the recent developments in Myanmar, all Indian citizens are required to take due precautions and avoid unnecessary travel,” the embassy said. “They may be in touch with the embassy, if required,” it said in the advisory titled ‘Message for Indian citizens residing in Myanmar in connection with the recent political scenario in Myanmar’. In its reaction to the developments in the country, India had on Monday expressed “deep concern” and said the rule of law and the democratic process must be upheld in the country. India also said it was monitoring the situation closely and that it has been steadfast in supporting the democratic transition in that country. According to the Indian embassy, around 7,000 non resident Indians are living in Myanmar while the number of Indian origin people in that country could be in the range of 1.5-2.5 million. The democratic transition in Myanmar had taken place in 2011 after decades of military rule.

their guard down, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said. “In the fifth sero survey done in the national capital of Delhi, antibodies have been detected in 56.13 per cent of the population. This was the largest survey in any state involving around 28,000 samples. Delhi has largely won over COVID-19, though we should continue to practice Covidappropriate behaviour,” Mr Jain said. “The last survey found 25-26 per cent seroprevalence. This means Delhi is inching towards herd immunity. Cases are also declining at less than 200 per day and low positivity rates. But I would appeal not let your guard down. Keep your masks on,” the minister said.

HiIndia Newsdesk Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori said on Tuesday that Japan would hold the Summer Olympics regardless of the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and was working closely with the International Olympic Committee to make them happen. “We will hold the Olympics, regardless of how the coronavirus (situation) looks,” Mori said, adding that the discussion should focus on how, not whether, the Olympics will happen. “We must consider new ways of hosting the Olympics” as a part of that, he said.Mori added that while working together had its difficulties, Tokyo 2020 organisers and the IOC had a strong relationship.

Actor Deep Sidhu’s Role Under Scrutiny After Tractor Rally Violence

HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: After a day of clashes during a farmers’ tractor protest on Republic Day on Tuesday, the role of a Punjabi actor, Deep Sidhu, has come under scrutiny. The actor-activist, once known to be close to movie star-turned-BJP MP Sunny Deol, was last seen at Red Fort, which became the epicenter of the chaos that descended upon Delhi. Farmers have accused him of planting the “Nishan Sahib” or Sikh religious flag at the Red Fort, an act that has provoked outrage, especially on social media. Images of protesters armed with sticks occupying the 400-year-old Mughal monument has drawn criticism even from those who backed the farmers’ agitation. In a post on Facebook last evening, Deep Sidhu has defended the act, saying the protesters did not remove the national flag but put up the “Nishan Sahib” as a symbolic protest. He also claimed that it was a spontaneous act. “To symbolically register our protest against the new farm legislation, we put up ‘Nishan Sahib’ and a farmer flag and also raised the slogan of Kisan Mazdoor Ekta,” said Mr Sidhu. He asserted that the national flag was not removed from the flagpole at the Red Fort.

FIR names nine Vacate Delhi, says Amarinder farm leaders

HiIndia Newsdesk The Delhi Police Wednesday detained around 200 protesters on charges of rioting, damaging public property and attacking police personnel during the Republic Day violence on Tuesday. The Police said they are making arrests after conducting proper verification and that 22 FIRs have been registered so far. The Delhi Police has also registered an FIR mentioning the names of nine farm leaders, including Yogendra Yadav. As many as 230 cops have sustained injuries and an official said multiple videos and CCTV footage are being scanned to identify farmers involved and that strict action will be taken against the culprits. A day after the national capital witnessed violent scenes as farmers participating in a tractor rally clashed with the police, broke barricades and stormed the Red Fort, and the police responded with tear gases and lathi charge, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Wednesday seeking setting up of a commission, headed by a retired apex court judge, to inquire the violence.

farmers’ tractor parade against the new agriculture laws in Delhi is unacceptable and urged the peasants to vacate the national capital. He said the violence will negate the goodwill earned by peaceful protesting farmers. Shocking scenes in Delhi. The violence by some elements is unacceptable. ‘Kohli’s India bully-proof’

HiIndia Newsdesk Former England captain Nasser Hussain feels Virat Kohli has instilled a fighting attitude in the current Indian team, which does not get bullied by adversities. Hussain warned England to be ready for a tough one in the four-Test series against India. “Any side that can go to Australia, go 1-0 down after being bowled out for 36, lose Kohli because he’s going home on paternity leave, lose your bowling attack and still come back and win after some of the stuff that went on off the field in Australia, they won’t be bullied,” he told. “They are a tough side. I think Kohli has instilled that. Make no mistake, at home, they are a formidable outfit.”

R-Day chaos points to a major intelligence lapse

HiIndia Newsdesk The unprecedented scenes of chaos in Delhi on Republic Day point to a massive intelligence failure and also put a question mark on the strategy adopted by the Union home ministry to prevent the situation from spiralling out of control, many felt. Protesting farmers broke through police barricades and checkposts, clashed with cops and entered the heart of the capital after deviating from the designated routes, prompting the law-enforcers to fire tear smoke canisters and lathicharge those descending on Delhi on tractors. One farmer died near central Delhi’s ITO after his tractor overturned, the police said. Protesters, however, claimed that he was killed in police firing. At many places the police were outnumbered as thousands of farmers fought through barricades and tear gas to enter the Red Fort complex. They were on foot and in tractors. As they headed towards central Delhi, many of them were heard raising slogans: “Delhi is not just for Modi and his ministers but ours too.”

Myanmar coup: UN chief Guterres calls for failure of military takeover HiIndia Newsdesk

UN Secretary General António Guterres has urged the world community to make sure Monday's coup in Myanmar fails. The reversal of elections is "unacceptable", he said, and coup leaders must be made to understand this is no way to rule the country. The UN Security Council is discussing a possible statement, but China is expected to block any form of words which condemns the coup. Elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi was detained when the army seized power. Police in Myanmar - also known as Burma -

later filed several charges against Ms Suu Kyi, who has been remanded in custody until 15 February. Neither Ms Suu Kyi nor deposed President Win Myint have been heard from since the takeover. The coup, led by armed forces chief Min Aung Hlaing, has seen the installation of an 11-member junta. The military, which has declared a year-long state of emergency, sought to justify its action by alleging fraud in last November's elections, which Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) won decisively.

China steps up vaccine diplomacy Covid: UK 'past this peak' but as competition with India heats up infections still 'alarmingly high' China has decided to provide 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to COVAX to meet the urgent needs of developing countries, at the request of the WHO, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said. HiIndia Newsdesk China on Wednesday said it would provide 10 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine to the global COVAX initiative as it seeks to step-up its vaccine diplomacy amid projections from experts that India could become the “engine” for the distribution of the jabs to the world. China offered to supply vaccines to COVAX even as it awaited emergency approval for its shots from the World Health Organisation (WHO). COVAX, formally known as the COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility, is a global initiative, which aims at ensuring that middle and lower-income countries get timely access to coronavirus vaccines. China has decided to provide 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to COVAX to meet the urgent needs of developing countries, at the request of the WHO, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told a media briefing here.

Covid hero Captain Tom dies HiIndia Newsdesk On Tuesday, 1,449 Covid deaths were announced in the UK but across the length and breadth of the land, people were talking only about Captain Tom Moore, who passed away, aged 100, at Bedford Hospital, having been admitted on Sunday with symptoms of the virus. That the end was the near for the man who inspired the nation by raising nearly £33 million by doing laps of his garden with the help of a walking aid became clear when his family were summoned to be by his bedside on Monday night. After Moore celebrated his 100th birthday on April 30 last year, the Queen knighted him in a special investiture held just for him in the grounds of Windsor Castle in July. On Tuesday a royal statement said: “The Queen is sending a private message of condolence to the family of Captain Sir Tom Moore. Her Majesty very much enjoyed meeting Captain Sir Tom and his family at Windsor last year. Her thoughts and those of the Royal Family are with them.” Thousands of tributes poured in for Moore, who had spent his war years in Calcutta.

Rihanna tweets in support of farm protests

HiIndia Newsdesk International pop star Rihanna on Tuesday extended her support to the farmers protesting on the outskirts of Delhi against the centre's agricultural laws, condemning the internet shutdown aimed at crippling the movement. "Why aren't we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest," tweeted the 'Don't Stop The Music' singer, who has more than 100 million followers on Twitter, along with a news article about the internet blockade. The tweet sent the singer trending on Twitter with thousands of responses including one from actor Kangana Ranaut, an ardent supporter of the ruling BJP who has made no bones about her strong dislike for the farmers' protest that has challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rihanna also tweeted about the coup in Myanmar on Tuesday, highlighting a post by Human Rights Watch and writing, "my prayers are with you #myanmar!" Internet services in the Delhi border areas of Singhu, Ghazipur and Tikri - epicentres of the farmers' months-long protest against the centre's agriculture laws - were suspended on Saturday and the shutdown has been extended twice to be in force till at least 5 pm Wednesday.

The Kings of Chepauk: How India has the edge over England in Chennai

HiIndia Newsdesk With an eye at Lords, which will host the final of the World Test Championship in June, India will take on England in the first of a four-match series at Chennai’s Chepauk on Friday. Both teams will go to battle on the back of away series victories in the longest format of

the game. While an injury-hit but feisty India posted a sensational 2-1 win to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Joe Root’s England won 2-0 against Sri Lanka. India has enjoyed a fair bit of success at the venue where it achieved its first-ever home victory over England in 1952, by an innings and 8 runs. Currently, the hosts hold a slight edge over the Three Lions at Chepauk, winning five of the nine Tests played at the venue. England have won three, with one match ending in a draw. Overall, Team India enjoys a formidable track record at the Chepauk, winning 14 Tests out of a total of 32 hosted by the city. It has only lost six Tests, with 11 ending in draws and one in a thrilling tie. ngland have not won at the Chepauk in 30 years. But so hadn’t Australia for 32 years at the Gabba in Brisbane before India, led by stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane, fashioned a win for the ages. Can Root inspire his charges to a similar feat in the first of the two Tests in Chennai? Time will tell.

No sex, partying or shopping ‘Glad to see your affection towards for athletes at Tokyo Games India’: PM Modi to Kevin Pietersen HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk Athletes who will stay inside the Games Village in Tokyo during the Olympics will have to abstain from parties and sex. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) published first of the four ‘playbooks’ on Wednesday, which will act as a guide for everyone travelling to Tokyo for the postponed Olympics. And among the raft of measures announced in it is a ban on physical contact. Life inside the Athletes Village is often described as boisterous. American shooter Josh Lakatos described his astonishment to ESPN when he saw members of a 4x100m relay team from a ‘Scandinavianlooking’ country walking out of the house followed by ‘boys from our side’.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, taking to social media, thanked former England captain Kevin Pietersen for his affection towards India on Wednesday. After S. Jaishankar, the External Affairs Minister of India, had tweeted a picture of a flight carrying India-made COVID-19 vaccines to Johannesburg on Monday, Pietersen lauded the nation’s efforts. Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, the 40-year old wrote, “Indian generosity and kindness grows more and more every single day. The beloved country!” Responding to Pietersen, PM Modi posted, “Glad to see your affection towards India. :) We believe that the world is our family and want to play our role in strengthening the fight against COVID-19.”

‘Indians know India, should decide for India’: Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar rallied for the nation to remain united in times of distress. Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir too voiced his opinion on the ongoing farmers protests condemning "outside forces". HiIndia Newsdesk Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir voiced their opinions on the ongoing farmers’ protest on Wednesday, saying that “external forces can be spectators”. Their comments came after the Ministry of External Affairs reacted sharply to tweets by pop star Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg on the protests. Rihanna, who has 100 million followers on Twitter, on Tuesday posted, “Why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest,” linking a CNN report. Tendulkar, the highest run-scorer in all formats of cricket, called for the country to remain united in times of distress. “India’s sovereignty cannot be compromised. External forces can be spectators but not participants. Indians know India and should decide for India. Let’s remain united as a nation,” he wrote on Twitter. His former dressing-room colleague and BJP MP Gautam Gambhir, said India will continue to thrive no matter what. “Outside forces have been trying to divide us, rule over us for centuries. But India remains & will thrive come what may! Use your billions, try your best! This is the New India,” he posted. Team India skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri and former India spinner Anil Kumble also voiced their opinions on the matter on Twitter. Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha responded to Rihanna’s tweet. “My country is proud of our farmers and knows how important they are. I trust it will be addressed soon. We don’t need an outsider poking her nose in our internal matters,” he wrote on Twitter.

Who will face New Zealand in WTC title clash? The postponement of Australia’s scheduled tour of South Africa due to Covid-related health concerns has secured New Zealand’s qualification for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final to be played at Lord’s in

Where do India stand?

As per the ICC standings, India sit atop the table both on absolute points and PCT – 430 and 71.7% respectively. Each series under the WTC is allotted 120 points and India need 70 from the one against England to top Australia’s PCT and qualify for the final. In a four-Test series, 30 points are allotted for a win, while a draw will fetch 10 points. So, a 2-1 series win against England, which is the minimum requirement, will secure India’s qualification

June. India need 70 points from their upcoming four-Test series against England to be the Kiwis’ opponents in the final. The top two teams in the WTC table, with the current cycle ending in March, will play the title decider.

Do Australia still have a chance?

for the WTC final.

What about England?

Joe Root’s team, too, has a chance to play the WTC final, although the equation for them is quite tough. England’s PCT at the moment is 68.7% and they need 87 points from the series against India to be at the Lord’s final. With three wins in the upcoming series, which is the minimum requirement, they will get past Australia, while India’s PCT will come down. A 3-1 or 3-0 series win against India will see England through.

So, Australia’s chances have been badly dented by the postponement?

To a large extent, yes. A three-Test series in South Africa would have had Tim Paine and Co playing for 120 points, with 40 points for a Test win. In hindsight though, Australia would rue the four points they lost because of a slow over-rate in the Boxing Day Test against

Theoretically, they have. If the India-England series ends in a stalemate – 0-0, 1-1 or 2-2 – then India’s PCT will drop below Australia’s, while England will stay rooted in fourth place. A 1-0 or 2-1 series win for England, or if India win 1-0, will also see the Aussies in the WTC final. In that case, both India and England will fail to collect the required number of points and will be knocked out.

India. With those four points, Australia’s PCT would have been 70 per cent, the same as New Zealand’s. Australia’s better Runs per Wicket (RPW) ratio, in that case, would have seen them through. According to ESPNCricinfo, Australia’s RPW is 1.39 vis-à-vis New Zealand’s 1.28.

Karnataka ministers hit back at Uddhav Thackerary for raking up border row HiIndia Newsdesk Kar n at a k a B J P m i n i s t e r s Thursday hit back at Maharashtra C h i e f Mi n i ste r Ud d h av Thackeray over his statement that his government could approach the Supreme Court to have the Belagavi area of Karnataka declared as a Union Territory. On Wednesday, Thackeray had said all disputed areas on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border should be declared UTs till the apex court gives its final verdict on their jurisdiction. Mocking the Shiv Sena chief ’s statement, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi said Mumbai should be made a part of the state and, until that happens, he urged the Centre to declare it as a UT. “We condemn the Maharashtra CM’s statement. The Mahajan report is final. We are confident that the Supreme Court will rule in our favour as well. The demand of the people in our

region (Mumbai-Karnataka) is that since we have been part of it, we, too, should have our right on Mumbai,” Savadi said. “Until Mumbai is made part of Karnataka, I urge the central government to declare it as a Union Territory. Now that we are asking for Mumbai, things will get even,” the deputy CM said in response to a question on the border issue being raked up by the Sena, Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party coalition ruling Maharashtra Reacting to the statement, Ramesh Jarkiholi, Karnataka’s water resource development minister who is additionally the minister-in-charge of Belagavi district, said Thackeray had raked up the border issue to divert public attention from the ‘failures’ of his government. “Don’t give much importance to what he says. Uddhav Thackeray has failed at all levels. He is trying to rake up the emotive border issue in a bid to try and divert public attention,” he said. The state Women and Child Development Minister Shashikala Jolle, who also hails from the Belagavi district, condemned Thackeray’s statement saying he has no right to speak about Belagavi.

By God’s grace I am in fine health Sharmila Tagore

Ever since some alarming reports appeared about Sharmila Tagore not keeping good health, the legendary diva has been inundated with calls from anxious friends, relatives, and fans. Putting to rest all concerns about her health, Sharmila Tagore ji says, “By God’s grace I am in fine health. There is absolutely no reason to be concerned. Though I’m 76, I keep myself very busy reading, gardening, social engagements, and of course attending to my obligations at home. There is no time to brood .” The past year’s lockdown also gave the highly versatile critically acclaimed actress an opportunity to watch all her films chronologically. “Many of my own films, I had never seen before. And I must say some of my old films like Choti Bahu and Badnaam Farishtay have withstood the test of time. I like Asit Sen’s Safar and Bhimsain’s Dooriyaan because I played a proper professional. This was so different from the conventional roles for heroines during those days. I like Anupama, Safar, Amar Prem, Talaash and Aradhana. Apur Sansar was a milestone and so was Devi. I got to work with Satyajit Ray in both.”

Sharmilaji’s own personal favourite performance remains the one she gave in the great Satyajit Ray’s Devi when she was just 14. “It is my own favourite film and performance. My life changed when I was introduced to Satyajit Ray. It was acting for me thereafter. But I kept telling myself I’d quit after every film. I saw myself in my first Hindi film Kashmir Ki Kali and I didn’t like myself.

Censorship has its pros and cons, necessary in some cases

Actor Saurabh Shukla said the COVID-19 induced lockdown gave him an opportunity to read and reflect, more importantly get his creative juices flowing, and he ended up making a full-length one man feature film where he donned the hat of a writer, director and the only character. The 90-minute film, currently in its post-production stages, is funny, dark and thrilling, Shukla said, adding that he would be soon sending his latest movie for screening at festivals. The veteran actor, all excited to work in Kaushik Ganguly’s first Hindi flick Manohar Pandey, also said that Kolkata is his home, and he loves the city for his unique character, culture and food. “Ganguly has made some amazing films. He is multi-talented, and can write direct and act equally well. This film has a soul, it has humour in it but you can’t really brand it as just another comedy. Also, I will be sharing screen space with talented costars Supriya Pathak and Raghubir Yadav, and I am looking forward to it,” the Bollywood actor, who is in the city for shooting of the film, told

It was a challenge to shoot from home without a co-star

In an exclusive chat the Padma Shri awardee talks about Metro Park 2, shooting from home and playing a ‘Gujarati Baa’ in multiple projects. Excerpts from the conversation…

How excited are you about Metro Park 2?

Trust me, I am really very eager to watch the show. I enjoyed myself so much while working for it. I have been receiving some really kind feedback from the industry and that makes me feel so excited. After the lockdown, it was such a good opportunity to work on something so light-hearted and fun. The trailer looked really funny to me, and I hope the audience too likes it.

on Metro Park 2

Metro Park Season 2 also stars Ranvir Shorey, Purbi Joshi, Pitobash, Omi Vaidya, Vega Tamotia, while Milind Soman and Gopal Dutt will be making special appearances.

Tell us a little about your part in the web show.

I cannot reveal too many details as that would spoil the fun. In short, it’s the character of Payal’s (Purbi Joshi) mother, and how she gets involved in their lives. It’s a very simple character but there’s lot of comic traits in her. You will also get to see some gimmick and involvement of technology. Honestly, I had to work hard

for the part to bring in the timing but it was all worth it.

Having worked all these years on sets, how was it to work from home? It was really difficult to shoot without a costar and I was honestly a little apprehensive too. There were long dialogues, and I told the makers that it wouldn’t be easy to do it all myself. Although I had my daughter and niece around, the director was kind enough to send a cameraman. It all became

professional then, and I got comfortable. I think as actors, we are still not used to working without someone calling ‘action’. Also, what was really challenging was not having any co-actor to react to my lines. Luckily for me, the people

Vikas Gupta evicted from SC rejects Tandav plea for Bigg Boss Season 14 relief from arrest

On Sunday, Salman Khan evicted Vikas Gupta from Bigg Boss 14. Interestingly, the contestant, who was allowed to return to the house twice this season, got another chance to save himself by using the ‘joker card’ which he had won during the premiere. However, accepting it as the audience’s choice, Gupta exited the show. Apart from Vikas Gupta, Rahul Vaidya, Nikki Tamboli and Devoleena Bhattacharjee were nominated for eviction this week. Gupta, who received the least number votes, felt it would be unfair to use his privilege and send someone else out of the house.

Ali Abbas Zafar’s Tandav has been at the receiving end of many complaints and trolling since its release. The Saif Ali Khan-starrer has been accused of hurting religious sentiments of a section of the audience. After numerous complaints, the makers released a statement apologising for unintentionally hurting people’s sentiments and agreed to snip ‘problematic’ sequences. However, the outrage continued and with apprehensions over arrest, a few members from the Tandav team approached the Supreme Court to grant them interim protection from arrest.

As an author of numerous cookbooks, are your passions for acting and for food interwoven?

TUCCI: They’re only interwoven, I suppose, in Big Night or Julie & Julia. But other than that, no. I act to eat. The only way I can afford to eat is to act. (Laughs) If I’m offered a job, my first thought is: OK, where does it shoot? The second thought is: How much will they pay me? And if it is shooting someplace else, I instantly think of the food there. I know if it’s Toronto, that’s fine. I don’t want to be that far away, but I know there’s great food. Vancouver? Fine. If someone says Bulgaria, I’m probably going to go, “How long is that shoot?”

Do you sometimes cook for your co-stars?

TUCCI: Absolutely. I cooked for Colin when I did “Supernova.” We’ve been friends for a long time so we’re in each other’s kitchens. His wife is a wonderful cook. I love to do it. I like to eat what I like to eat. I don’t want to go and eat some hamburger some place in the middle of nowhere. I’d rather take the time and put in the effort to make myself something good.

You’re a very precise actor. I can see that being similar to cooking.

TUCCI: Not if you saw me cook. My wife goes, “How much of that did you put in?” I don’t know!

Do you feel you’ve gotten better as an actor as you’ve aged? TUCCI: I feel like I’ve gotten better, yeah. That was the goal, just to keep getting better. I’m more relaxed now because I’ve just been doing it for so long. A lot of it is technique. And a lot of it is realizing the more often you do it, the less you really have to do — that economy is everything. You don’t need, a lot of times, to expend the energy that you thought you needed to when you were young. Also, you’re older now so you can’t. (Laughs) The only thing at this point: I hate waiting. Like I can’t bear it. I just hate it. Life’s too short. You spend so much time on a movie set just waiting. As a director, I try to move things along very, very swiftly. I don’t like long days. I don’t like lunch hours. Let’s go, do it, go home and have a martini and a nice dinner.

Sara Ali Khan shows winter fashion

Ingredients

3 cups – White rice 1 tsp – Olive oil/per dosa ½ cup – Split chana dal ¾ cup – Split moong dal 4 tsp – Methi seeds (fenugreek seeds)

Steps

Winter is here and so are pictures of celebrities doling out one inspired look after another. Recently Sara Ali Khan joined in. The Coolie No. 1 actor was spotted in a white, comfortable jumper from the label Smoke Wear. Styled by Ami Patel, the look was chic, but what really did the trick were the thigh-high stockings she donned. Winter wear is all about socks and stockings, and opting for a quirky pair is the easiest way to stand out

*In a big glass bowl, add white rice, split chana, moong dal, and mix it. Once mixed, rinse it several times to get rid of any dirt. *Then add filtered water, enough to soak the mix, and let it sit for 5 hours. *Now, transfer only the rice and chana mix to a blender. But don’t waste the water, use it to blendi it into a thick running paste. Once blended, transfer it to a bowl and keep it in the fridge. Make sure you use this batter within 3 days. But every time you take it out, add about ¼ glass of water to make it slightly thin. *Now place a flat non-stick pan on a low-medium flame and once it heats up, spritz some cold water on the pan and instantly clean it dry with a cloth. *This allows the surface of the pan to cool down. Now pour the batter and spread it out in a circular fashion. Add a few drops of olive oil and let it cook until slightly golden. Flip and repeat the procedure. Your crispy dosa is ready!

s the rapid development of digital communication technology has given rise to new forms of social interaction on social media, a recent study has found that around 1400, dating sites/chats have been created over the last decade in North America alone. Solely in the UK, 23 per cent of Internet users have met someone online with whom they had a romantic relationship for a certain period and that 6 per cent of married couples met through the web. The study was published in the online open-access journal Clinical Practice & Epidemiology in Mental Health. While communication technologies have revolutionised, and continue to revolutionise the modalities of interaction and the building of emotional attachment on the one hand, on the other, the online dating industry has given rise to new forms of pathologies and crime. Online romance scams are a modern

form of fraud that has spread in Western societies along with the development of social media. Through a fictitious Internet profile, the scammer develops a romantic relationship with the victim for 6-8 months, building a deep emotional bond with the aim of extorting economic resources in a manipulative dynamic. There are two notable features: on the one hand, the double trauma of losing money and a relationship, on the other, the victim’s shame upon discovery of the scam, an aspect that might lead to underestimation of the number of cases. Sixty-three per cent of social media users and 3 per cent of the general population report having been a victim at least once. Women, middle-aged people, and individuals with higher tendencies to anxiety, romantic idealisation of affective relations, impulsiveness and susceptibility to relational addiction are at higher risk of being victims of the scam.

Fasting&vitaminC effective Indo-Mediterranean diet on hard-to-treat cancers lowers pre-heart failure

A

fasting-mimicking diet could be more effective at treating some types of cancer when combined with vitamin C, suggests a new study conducted by the scientists from USC and the IFOM Cancer Institute in Milan. In studies on mice, researchers found that the combination delayed tumour progression in multiple mouse models of colorectal cancer; in some mice, it caused disease regression. The results were published in the journal Nature Communications. “For the first time, we have demonstrated how a completely non-toxic intervention can effectively treat an aggressive cancer,” said Valter

While fasting remains a challenging option for cancer patients, a safer, more feasible option is a lowcalorie, plant-based diet that causes cells to respond as if the body were fasting

Longo, the study senior author and the director of the USC Longevity Institute at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology and professor of biological sciences at the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. “We have taken two treatments that are studied extensively as interventions to delay ageing-- a fasting-mimicking diet and vitamin C -- and combined them as a powerful treatment for cancer,” added Longo. The researchers said that while fasting remains a challenging option for cancer patients, a safer, more feasible option is a low-calorie, plant-based diet that causes cells to respond as if the body were fasting.

W

hile Indo-Mediterranean diets are anti-inflammatory and considered good for a healthy heart, recently, cohort studies and case-control studies have demonstrated that western-style diets rich in sugar and lack of physical activity are important behavioural risk factors of heart failure. The study was published in The Open Inflammation Journal. Pre-heart failure may be defined as a state of myocardial dysfunction, which is at high risk for developing complete heart failure. It is similar to pre-diabetes or pre-hypertension for developing diabetes mellitus and hypertension, respectively. Pre-heart failure is characterised with changes in cardiac muscles that are known as remodelling which may help to keep the blood pumping, but the ventricular walls may eventually weaken and are not able to pump adequate blood to the circulatory system resulting into chronic heart failure. The heart may have high filling pressure with symptoms of dyspnoea and other congestive symptoms. In this process, aldosterone and cortisol predict mediumterm left ventricular remodelling in an attempt to prevent cardiac failure. In the pathophysiology of cardiomyocyte dysfunction as well as in the conversion of physiological remodelling to pathological remodelling and pre-heart failure to complete heart failure, behavioural risk factors have an important role. In previous studies, Dhalla et al. have observed subcellular remodelling and alterations in sarcoplasmic reticulum to be important which could be identified early by speckle tracking echocardiography.

According to the study, exercising regularly can cut 25-27 per cent of the risk of frequent hospital stays. Inactive participants in the study spent just over 4 days more in hospital over the next ten years than those who did at least some physical activity, whether for work or leisure. Institutes like Fitso are focussing on selling memberships at discounted rates, which can be put to good use once the lockdown is over. Millet hopes to cut down on prices, but keeping the pools up and running, and

University of Cambridge’s Department of Public Health and Primary Care and MRC Epidemiology Unit, calculates that for every inactive person who started to take at least some exercise, the NHS could save around 247 Euros per year. This would equate to around 7 percent of the UK’s per capita health expenditure. The researchers found that in the first ten years active participants were 2527 per cent less likely than inactive participants to have more than 20 hospital days or more than 7 admissions per year with similar results over the subsequent ten years.

chalking out a future agenda is priority now. swimming coaches are trying to work their way around this, by concentrating on other components. “Focus on maintaining your strength and a good core, especially a strong back and shoulders,” says Manisha

You can replace a kettlebell with a water can, but what about a swimming pool? “We can’t recreate much” Khungar of Gurgaon’s Trifitness. keeping parents from sitting by the poolside, urging people to come in their swimwear, dry up and leave without using the changing rooms, and halting daily access passes to pools, might do the trick.

Staying hygienic cuts down the use of antibiotics

Improving hygiene practices like washing hands reduces the risk of catching infections by 50 percent and cuts the use of antibiotics by 30 percent, suggests a new study. Global public health experts are now calling for home and community hygiene to become part of strategic plans to reduce hundreds of thousands of deaths from AMR (Antimicrobial Resistance) globally each year. The position paper is published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC). As witnessed during the recent global efforts to delay the spread of COVID-19, hygiene practices, including hand-washing, have become an essential part of everyone’s daily routine and are considered to be the first line of defence in reducing the spread of common infections. However, national and international AMR strategies, while focussing on the important role of hygiene in the healthcare setting, fail to recognise the key role that home and community hygiene plays. The position paper, developed on behalf of the Global Hygiene Council (GHC) and published online in AJIC, explores the role of targeted hygiene in the home and everyday life settings to reduce antibiotic prescribing and its likely impact on antibiotic resistance.

These extreme buildings are hanging on at the ends of the Earth

Around the world, scientists and researchers are tackling some of the planet’s biggest problems – such as climate change, environmental degradation and rising sea levels – at their source. In order to achieve this, a series of research facilities and laboratories are being built in extreme environments, such as in the Antarctic, deep underwater and nestled alongside remote ecosystems. The work done there will help us redefine our relationship with the natural world – and even provide insight as to how to begin new lives on other planets – while also providing forward-thinking architects with opportunities to reimagine what a scientific laboratory can look like.

Proteus, Curaçao, Dutch Caribbean

Deep water Work begins in 2021 on Proteus, which when complete, will be the world’s most advanced underwater scientific research station. A collaboration between Swiss designer Yves Behar and the US-based Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center, the complex will span over 371 square metres and be powered by ocean, solar and wind energy. The structure will include pod apartments for visitors and an underwater greenhouse kept temperate by thermal energy. "Just two kids from a small town in Pakistan, who escaped their conservative families" is how Sidra Qasim describes herself and her husband, Waqas Ali. Sidra and Waqas are today the power couple behind Atoms - a New York-based footwear brand known for its quarter sizes and comfortable sneakers. But the road to success was not an easy one for them, and now Sidra has opened up about their journey in an interview with Humans of New York. "It's the same story taught to every Pakistani girl. We are raised from a young age to believe that our purpose in life is to find and keep a husband," she says in the first of her 11-part interview. But even as a child, Sidra had bigger dreams, and she held on to them even as her family pressurized her to get married right out of school. Sidra, who belongs to the small town of Okara, first met Waqas at her aunt's house. He was one of her aunt's students. "We'd discuss life, and society, and human emotions. It became the only chance I had to exchange my ideas with anyone. And Waqas took my opinions seriously," she says. After school, she enrolled in a college and became one of the only 15 female students there. It was after she successfully produced a play to help with flood relief efforts that Waqas asked her to join him in Lahore where he had moved to study further - and become his business partner. "It finally felt as though my talents were being recognized, and the next day I asked for my parent's permission. But they refused," she says. The refusal came as a blow to Sidra, who describes lying listless on the couch for weeks - to the point where it scared her father. Eventually, they agreed to

Its three pavilions will be clad in pre-weathered steel and the green roofs will collect rainwater.

Experimental Bioregenerative Station (EBIOS), Mojave Desert, US

The desert Interstellar Lab’s EBIOS will begin construction in California in 2021. A carbon-neutral village made of glass-clad domes, it will generate water, food and energy for 100 people as part of a trial for living on other planets. Rooms will be available to rent for up to $6,000 per week.

let her move to Lahore, where she began working with Waqas on a company named 'Social Media Art' which aimed to help brands establish a social media presence. As their company struggled, Waqas and Sidra grew closer. "We never discussed the status of our relationship, but both of us could feel a closeness. We were bonded by our journey. Both of us were defying our parents," she says. "But after a year of rejection we had begun to lose hope." A ray of hope came from unlikely quarters, when Sidra Qasim and Waqas Ali met with a group of craftsmen in the local village council of Okara. "They were making leather shoes on the floor of a two-room workshop," she says. Sidra returned to the workshop again and again for a week and, in the end, the craftsmen agreed to collaborate with them. While Waqas worked on the website, Sidra ensured that the shoes they produced met the highest quality standards. " We called our collection 'Hometown Shoes.' And after we launched our website, the first order came in right away," she says. Although they made a loss on the order due to the high shipping cost to France, the couple did not give up hope. "After a year we were selling about 50 shoes per month. We were happy to have any business at all, but it wasn't nearly enough to survive," says Sidra. They started a highly successful Kickstarter campaign and raised $1,07,000 in 2014 by selling over 600 pairs of shoes. She concluded the interview by talking about the change that her business has helped brought about. She has been able to help her family back in Pakistan financially.

Not just Rihanna — farmer protests drew support from global stars Lilly Singh, Hasan Minhaj too New Delhi: International attention on the farmers’ protest in India has been growing over the past two days following a tweet by pop singer Rihanna and the reactions it triggered from other celebrities. The protests have dominated much of the news in India for the past two months, since farmers set up camp at Delhi’s borders in December, demanding that the Narendra Modi government repeal three contentious laws that were passed in September last year. Eleven rounds of talks with the government have been held, but the stalemate has continued with the farmers unwilling to concede on their demand and the government unwilling to budge on not repealing the laws. The issue turned ugly on 26 January — Republic Day — when farmers pushed through police barricades to carry out a tractor rally in the national capital. In the ensuing mayhem, one farmer died of injuries sustained in an accident while dozens of police personnel and farmers were injured. As the chaos unfolded, internet was suspended at the border areas where protest sites have cropped up and in pockets across Delhi. The news of the internet suspension, which was lifted 2 February, caught the attention of Rihanna. Meanwhile, environmental activist Greta Thunberg also tweeted in support of the protests Wednesday. ‘Peaceful protests hallmark of democracy’: US on farmers’ stir BY STAFF WRITER

A

s farmers’ protests in India become the global talk of the town, the US state department has also jumped into the debate, saying peaceful protests are a hallmark of democracy and that differences could be resolved via dialogue. It said unhindered access to information is a fundamental right. However, the department also indicated that it supports India’s reforms in agriculture, saying it welcomes steps taken to “improve the efficiency of India’s markets”. The US state department in a statement said: “We recognise peaceful protests as the hallmark of thriving democracy, and Indian SC has stated the same. We encourage differences b/w parties to be resolved through dialogue. The US welcomes steps that would improve the efficiency of India’s markets and attract more private sector investment.” The state department also said, “unhindered access to information, including the internet, is fundamental to the freedom of expression and a hallmark of a thriving society”. Ever since international pop star Rihana tweeted her support for farmer’s protests on Wednesday, several American lawmakers have come out in support of farmers’ right to protests. “I am concerned by the reported actions against peaceful demonstrators protesting new agricultural reform laws in India,” Congresswoman Haley Stevens said, adding that both parties should engage in productive discussions, reported news agency PTI. She said she will continue to monitor the situation closely.Another Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, tweeted that India must protect farmers’ basic democratic rights, allow for the free flow of information, reinstate internet access, and release all the journalists detained for covering the protests. Also read: ‘Let us all stay united’: Virat Kohli backs ‘IndiaTogether’ campaign after Rihanna’s Tweet Meena Harris, the niece of Vice President Kamala Harris, also alleged the world’s biggest democracy is under an “assault”. “It’s no coincidence that the world’s oldest democracy was attacked not even a month ago, and as we speak, the most populous democracy is under assault. This is related. We ALL should be outraged by India’s internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters,” she tweeted. Gurinder Singh Khalsa, chairman of the Sikhs Political Action Committee, in a statement, said that this is the beginning of a movement for better accountability and

transparency against crony capitalism. “World was watching and now it has started reacting and mobilising in support of this historic revolution of Indian farmers. This will be bigger than India’s freedom Revolution,”

said Khalsa in a statement. Notably, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had also said recently that India’s new farm laws were a “significant step forward” for reforms in the agriculture sector.

Meanwhile, a war of words over the farmer’s protests seems to have erupted over social media platforms, especially Twitter, with several international celebrities and activists standing behind farmers.

FARMERS’ PROTEST | AKSHAY, AJAY AND OTHERS SAY ‘INDIA AGAINST PROPAGANDA’ AFTER RIHANNA, GRETA SUPPORT FARMERS

I

BY STAFF WRITER

n a statement, the MEA said a very small section of farmers in parts of the country have some reservations about the farm reforms Bollywood stars Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, filmmaker Karan Johar and Suniel Shetty on Wednesday said citizens should focus on the government’s efforts to resolve the ongoing farmer crisis rather than paying attention to “half truths” and those “creating differences.” Their comments came after the Ministry of External Affairs reacted sharply to comments by international pop star Rihanna, teen climate activist Greta Thunberg and others on farmers’ protests. In a statement, the MEA said a very small section of farmers in parts of the country have some reservations about the farm reforms and a proper understanding of the issue is needed before rushing to comment on the agitation. Rihanna, who has 100 million followers on Twitter and is among the most followed people on the microblogging site, on Tuesday tweeted, “why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest, linking a CNN report on the internet shutdown near the protest site. Sharing the MEA statement on Twitter, Akshay said that the efforts by the government to solve the issue are “evident”.“Farmers constitute an extremely important part of our country. And the efforts being undertaken to resolve their issues are evident. Let’s support an amicable resolution, rather than paying attention to anyone creating differences. #IndiaTogether #IndiaAgainstPropaganda,” Kumar wrote. Devgn urged the people to be wary of “false propaganda against India or Indian policies”. “Don’t fall for any false propaganda against India or Indian policies. Its important to stand united at this hour w/o any infighting #IndiaTogether #IndiaAgainstPropaganda” he posted. Johar said the country shouldn’t let “anyone divide us”. “We live in turbulent times and the need of the hour is prudence and patience at every turn. Let us together, make every effort we can to find solutions that work for everyone—our farmers are the backbone of India. Let us not let anyone divide us. #IndiaTogether” he said. Shetty also shared the MEA on Twitter, saying

nothing is “more dangerous than half truth”. “We must always take a comprehensive view of things, as there is nothing more dangerous than half truth. #IndiaTogether #IndiaAgainstPropaganda” he said. Without naming anyone, singer Kailesh Kher said that anti-India can stoop to any level to defame the country. “Even in this sad phase of pandemic,India is helping all nations with vaccine supply for the sake of Humanity.Let all realise that India is ONE & will not tolerate comments against it. #IndiaTogether #IndiaAgainstPropaganda” he tweeted. On Tuesday night, international pop star Rihanna became the first global name to voice her support to the ongoing farmers agitation while criticising the internet shutdown at the protest site. Later, Ms. Thunberg, Swedish environmental activist, also backed the agitation, tweeting, “We stand in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India.” In its response, the MEA said the Parliament of India passed the reformist legislation relating to the agricultural sector, and noted that some of the vested interest groups have tried to mobilise international support against India. “We would like to emphasise that these protests must be seen in the context of India’s democratic ethos and polity, and the efforts of the government and the concerned farmer groups to resolve the impasse. The minister asserted that facts should be ascertained and a proper understanding of the issues must be taken “before rushing to comment on such matters”. “The temptation of sensationalist social media hashtags and comments, especially when resorted to by celebrities and others, is neither accurate nor responsible,” the statement said. Thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, have been camping at several Delhi border points since November last year, demanding the government to repeal the three farm laws and legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for their crops. Sites of the farmer protest at Delhi’s borders have turned into fortresses with the police beefing up secu-

rity and putting up multi-layer barricades to stop the movement of vehicles. Barbed wire has also been put up to keep off people on foot. The strengthened security measures at the agitation sites across the Delhi borders come after the violence during the Republic day tractor parade.

Meet Kyuta: The China Debuts 'Floating' Train That 10-Year-Old, 85-Kilo Can Travel At 620 Kmph Sumo In Training

Among the young sumo wrestlers lifting weights in the ring, 10-year-old Kyuta Kumagai stands out. At 85 kilograms (187 lb), Kyuta is twice the size of the other children his age and is so dominant that he wrestles, and beats, boys five or six years older. Last year, he was crowned the under-10 world champion, beating out competition from as far afield as the United Kingdom and Ukraine. His training regime, devised by his father Taisuke, is relentless. He trains six days a week, either at his local sumo club or lifting weights. He also swims and practices track and field to build up the flexibility and explosive quickness needed for sumo wrestling. Kyuta has been on the programme since his father entered him in a tournament while still in kindergarten. "I didn't teach him anything, he could do various things naturally," said Taisuke, a former amateur sumo. "There is a talent for sumo and he has that talent. He won the tournament. I thought he may have something special." A shy boy of few words, Kyuta's motivations are simple. "It is fun to beat people older than me." "I'M BETTING EVERYTHING ON THIS" When it became apparent the boy had talent, Taisuke moved the family to the Fukugawa area of Tokyo that is famous for producing sumo wrestlers. It has an abundance of clubs and Nominosukune Shrine, where the God of Sumo is said to reside, meaning there is a lot of local support for the Kumagais. Father and son use a local temple for intense one-on-one training. The sessions tend to finish with the pair wrestling up and down the carpet in front of the main shrine. Taisuke pushes Kyuta so hard that the child is often left breathless and crying. But he believes it is the only way to get the best out of his son.

China has unveiled a prototype for a new high-speed maglev train that is capable of hitting speeds of 620 kilometers per hour. Created by scientists at the Southwest Jiaotong University, the train has no wheels. Instead, the magnetic levitation train has been developed with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) technology, which uses magnets that allow it to 'hover' above the track, according to The Independent. This makes it look like the train is floating along the magnetized tracks and allows for faster, frictionless travel. The 69-foot prototype was unveiled in Chengdu on Wednesday. At the launch ceremony, the train was seen floating slowly along the track. "The superconductor technology the train employs could make it faster and lighter than its peers," state-run Xinhua News said in a tweet while sharing footage of the prototype.

Man Drives Car Onto Airport Runway, Says He Took A "Wrong Turn"

A motorist drove his car right onto an active airport runway in Thailand, allegedly under the influence of drugs. In the bizarre incident which unfolded on Tuesday, shocked airport staff watched as the man drove his car towards a plane which had just landed at the Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. Footage of the incident shows the man being escorted off the runway by airport officials. The video was filmed by an unnamed member of the ground staff, reports the Daily Mail, and has gone viral on social media. "I don't know how the car made it onto the runway," the person filming can be heard saying. "The airport is such a valuable company, but they haven't even managed to stop the car from getting into the airport. This is such a safety and security breach. It's so terrible." According to news website The Thaiger,

Airports of Thailand released a press statement saying the man was "quickly" apprehended. He was later identified as one Prathipat Masakul. Mr Masakul, when apprehended by airport police, claimed that he had "taken a wrong turn". However, officials say that was high on methamphetamine. The drug was also found inside his vehicle. Squadron Leader Suthirawat Suwanwat, Director of the airport, said that staff "immediately intercepted and detained the driver to be investigated and prosecuted." While Mr Masakul has been detained on suspicion of intruding into restricted areas, illegal possession of drugs and illegally consuming and driving while under the influence of methamphetamine, airport officials are also trying to figure out how he managed to breach security and enter the runway.

Man Accidentally Throws Away Hard Drive With Bitcoin Worth $280 Million

A British man who threw away a hard drive with bitcoin worth 230 million pounds in it is once again trying to convince local authorities to let him search for the device in a landfill site. James Howells, a 35-yearold IT engineer from Newport, Wales, began mining the cryptocurrency in 2009, according to Metro News. He was cleaning his office in 2013 when he accidentally threw away the hard drive with bitcoin that is now worth a small fortune. The price of bitcoin has soared in recent years, though it was practically worthless when Mr Howells began mining it . According to news agency AFP, the virtual currency barrelled to new highs to rise more than 400 percent over the past year, before sliding some 20 percent and then settling around $36,000. Mr Howells says that he had 7,500 bitcoins which, at today's prices, would be worth more than $280 million. He claims he had two identical hard drives and mistakenly threw away the one which has the cryptographic "private key" he needs to access his bitcoin, reports CNBC. He is confident that he can recover the bitcoin even after all these years - but so far the Newport City Council has refused to let him search the landfill site he believes contains his hard drive. "There is a good chance the platter inside the drive is still intact," Mr Howells told CNBC. "Data recovery experts could then rebuild the drive or read the data directly from the platter." The 35-year-old has even offered to donate 25% of the bitcoins - worth around $70.8 million - to the city, but so far to no avail. The Newport City Council has rejected repeated requests from Mr Howells to let him look through the garbage dump which could contain the hard drive he threw out eight years ago. "The council has told Mr Howells on a number of occasions that excavation is not possible under our licencing permit and excavation itself would have a huge environmental impact on the surrounding area," a council spokesperson said. "The cost of digging up the landfill, storing and treating the waste could run into millions of pounds - without any guarantee of either finding it or it still being in working order." Mr Howells is still making a last-ditch effort to convince the council. He says he has found a hedge fund willing to fund the excavation so the council would not have to pay for it.

The rocket had failed to reach orbit last year during the first test launch

Virgin Orbit’s rocket reached orbit and the satellites were released, meaning Sunday’s mission was a success. The headline has been updated to reflect this. The original story is below. Virgin Orbit — the sister company of billionaire Richard Branson’s space tourism outfit Virgin Galactic — will try a second test of its small satellite-launching rocket later today, months after it failed to reach orbit during a first attempt. It will also be the first time that the company tries to launch working satellites into space on behalf of NASA. Sometime after 1PM ET, Virgin Orbit’s customized Boeing 747 will take off from Virgin Galactic’s spaceport in the Mojave desert and ascend to 35,000 feet with the satellite-launching rocket attached to its wing. Once it reaches a predetermined location, the rocket is supposed to drop and ignite, taking the small satellites on board the rest of the way into orbit around the Earth. Virgin Orbit says the window for launch will last until 5PM ET. There is no live stream of the test, though the company plans to tweet updates throughout the flight. It will make photos and video available sometime after the test is completed. Virgin Orbit has spent years developing this method of airborne rocket-launching, and it has performed increasingly complex flight tests since 2018. But the first full test of the company’s rocket-launching capabilities in May of last year did not go completely as planned. The plane ascended correctly, the rocket dropped, and the main engine ignited. But a problem in the liquid oxygen fuel line prevented the rocket from reaching orbit.

Facebook suspends ads for Apple reportedly planning weapon accessories until at big iMac redesign and halfleast January 22nd sized Mac Pro

Facebook has updated its Inauguration Day preparations to include a temporary ban on ads that promote weapon accessories and protective equipment at least through January 22nd “out of an abundance of caution,” the company said in a new blog post Saturday. “We already prohibit ads for weapons, ammunition and weapon enhancements like silencers. But we will now also prohibit ads for accessories such as gun safes, vests and gun holsters in the US,” the statement reads. The ban comes after Facebook was criticized for allowing posts across its platforms that promoted and organized the deadly January 6th attack on the Capitol building. The ads for military gear such as body armor and gun holsters ran next to Facebook and Instagram posts about the insurrection at the Capitol that included calls for violence, as first reported by BuzzFeed News, A group of US senators wrote a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Friday, urging the company to “develop and execute a Facebook policy permanently prohibiting advertisements of products... primarily designed for use in lethal tactical operations and armed combat.”

The company added the temporary ban to its Inauguration Day preparations

In addition to revamped MacBook Pros that ditch the Touch Bar and resurrect MagSafe, Apple is also said to be planning to announce its long-awaited iMac redesign this year — and a pair of Mac Pro refreshes are on the roadmap, too. This is all according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who says the iMac will undergo its most significant overhaul since 2012: Apple will reportedly ditch the chin beneath the screen, cut down on display bezels, and move to a flat-back design. The overall appearance will likely resemble the Pro Display XDR. The new iMac will replace the Intel-powered 27inch and 21.5-inch versions currently available and move the all-in-one desktop to Apple silicon. It’ll be one of the most significant visual makeovers of any Apple product this year, according to the report. The existing iMac packs top-tier specs and a beautiful screen into a design that has felt particularly outdated these last couple of years, so this change will be welcome. The last revision focused on increased speed, an improved webcam, and also added an option for a matte / nano-texture display coating. As for the Mac Pro, Apple seems to have a two-prong plan: it’ll refresh the current upgradeable tower design — Gurman says the company is considering sticking with Intel processors for this machine. But that doesn’t mean Apple is stalling on a Mac Pro that runs on its own chips. The company is also apparently at work on a completely new form factor that Gurman says is less than half the total size of the current Mac Pro. “The design will feature a mostly aluminum exterior and could invoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube,” he says.
