Biden’s Medicare pick would be 1st Black McDonald's owner sues for racial discrimination Black woman to hold post

HiIndia Newsdesk A former professional baseball player who was once the largest black McDonald's operator in the US has sued the company for racial discrimination. Herb Washington said the firm had denied black owners the

opportunities it gave to whites, including by steering them to stores to "distressed, predominantly black" areas. He accused the company of retaliating against him after he raised concerns. McDonald's blamed his troubles on "mismanagement". In a statement, the firm said it was reviewing the complaint, adding that Mr Washington was facing "business challenges that we don't want for anyone in our system." "This situation is the result of years of mismanagement by Mr Washington, whose organisation has failed to meet many of our standards on people, operations, guest satisfaction and reinvestment," the company said.

HiIndia Newsdesk Pakistan is unlikely to exit the Financial Action Task Force’s ‘grey’ list until June, despite its efforts to garner support from the member nations ahead of the plenary meeting of the global terror financing and money laundering watchdog next week, according to a media report on Wednesday. Pakistan was placed on the FATF ‘grey’ list in June 2018 and given a timeline to address global concerns by implementing 27 action points. The FATF, during its virtual plenary in October last year, concluded that Pakistan will continue in its ‘grey’ list till February 2021 as it has failed to fulfil six key obligations of the global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog that include failure to take action against two of India’s most wanted terrorists — Maulana Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed.

India, which has shipped Made In India’ Covid-19 vaccines to around 25 nations, on Wednesday urged the international community to stop vaccine nationalism and actively encourage internationalism, underlining that hoarding superfluous doses will defeat global efforts to attain collective health security and combat the pandemic. Addressing the UN Security Council, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar outlined nine points for consideration of the international community to help the world put the Covid-19 pandemic decisively behind it and to emerge more resilient. “Stop vaccine nationalism; indeed, actively encourage internationalism. Hoarding superfluous doses will defeat our efforts towards attaining collective health security,” he said, speaking at the open debate on the implementation of resolution 2532 (2020) on the cessation of hostilities

in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic. He also emphasised that disinformation campaigns taking advantage of the pandemic to advance their nefarious objectives and activities must be stopped. Jaishankar voiced concern that lack of global coordination regarding vaccine distribution will hit conflict affected areas and poorer countries the hardest. He cited the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) estimates that more than 60 million people in such areas are at risk. India is also concerned over a glaring disparity in accessibility of vaccines globally and Jaishankar emphasised that equity in access to vaccines is important for mitigating the impact of pandemic. This disparity calls for cooperation within the framework of COVAX, which is trying to secure adequate vaccine doses for the world’s poorest nations, he said.

HiIndia Newsdesk Prime Minister Boris Johnson is plotting a staged exit from lockdown that would see the United Kingdom’s battered economy returning to work over the next five months after leaping ahead of most of the world on vaccinating its people. The novel coronavirus, which emerged in China in late 2019, has killed 2.4 million people worldwide, upended normal life for billions and tipped the United Kingdom to its worst slump in 300 years. After moving faster than all other Western peers bar Israel to vaccinate its population, the United Kingdom’s $3 trillion economy is aiming to be among the first major Western economies to return to some semblance of normality – still far behind the furnaces of global growth in China.

Punit J Pathak talks fame and the responsibility it comes with, as he makes his web debut with Love, Scandal and Doctors. While you are a prolific dancer and choreographer, what made you take up acting?

People who follow my work have always maintained that I can be a fabulous actor and should try my hand at it. Being camera-shy, I found it difficult to give auditions and do look tests. Also, I felt every other person wants to become an actor. So, I would often tell myself, why should I join the rat race when I have a [thriving] career as a judge and choreographer? Eventually, I want to become a director. Hopefully, that should work out next year.

How did Love, Scandal and Doctors come your way?

Careful of roles I play as kids watch me

Punit J Pathak

I received two offers from ALTBalaji during the lockdown. I got selected for one of the roles after I auditioned for it from home. A few days later, they offered me another role, of a cop in LSD. Over a conference call, the makers convinced me that I was better suited for this part. While both roles were dramatically different, I was not sure how the former would pan out on screen. It was bold for my taste. Considering I have a huge fan following among children and am looked up to as a role model, I wasn’t keen on taking up a role that would confuse them. I thought it would be fun to play a cop, so I went ahead with LSD.

Journey of Bigg Boss 14 was more fulfilling than season 11

Arshi Khan

Arshi Khan opened about her eviction, her journey and who she feels will take home the trophy. How disappointing was it for your brother, who was gearing up to enter the house as your connection? He was heartbroken. He didn’t care that my journey on the show was over as he was feeling sad only about himself. He was already in quarantine for around a week and was really excited to join the contestants. Bunty even told me he had plans to group up with Rahul and Aly and have a lot of fun. Season 11 or 14, which journey has been more fulfilling to you? I think this time, it was more fun, as I knew what I was doing. It was an unknown territory for me. This year, it also was quite a tough job as most contestants were up to nothing when we entered. It took a while for me to understand their game and then manipulate it for my benefit. Post that, maine scene zarur palta (I changed the scene).

The boho jacket + sari look

Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s love for Anamika Khanna’s ensembles is well known. For an event in Delhi, she chose a white sari that highlighted the designer's s i g natu re d el i c ate re sham embroidery in floral and paisley motifs. To further play up the six-yard drape, Kapoor Ahuja styled it with a jacket drenched in intricate thread and mirror work, along with fun tassel and pom pom detailing. The result: an eccentric, eye-catching festive look that would also make a practical choice for a winter wedding.

Traditional Jackets in unique ways Sonam Kapoor Ahuja is a sartorial risk-taker. From layering to accessorising, she knows how to give any look a fashion-forward spin. The actor, who is partial to saris, has also found a smart solution to keeping warm during the colder months, while letting her drape take centre stage

The luxurious long coat Print on print is always a good idea. Case in point: for an event in Mumbai, she picked a look from Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s Kashgaar Bazaar, which brought together several clashing prints. While her long jacket featured a rich paisley print in green and purple, her trousers were patterned with beautiful blooms and the dress she wore with it included a combination of both.

was just 16, when my father was diagnosed with Cancer. Back then in the 1950's, Tata Hospital in Bombay was considered one of the best Hospitals for Cancer Treatment. Hence we took him to Bombay. The treatment went on for more than a year and there wasn’t any other source of income in our family so my Mother sold all her ornaments. As days went by, I was hopeful that my father would defeat cancer but I was wrong. I was appearing for my 10th grade final exam when I received the message that my father is breathing his last and he is being brought to our village from Bombay. I left everything and rushed to our village. I met him for a few minutes but the very next morning he passed away. His demise created a huge void in my life. I was in deep pain for losing him to Cancer and that hurt always remained in the back of my mind. However, I had a family to look after, hence, I moved on in my journey. The initial years were filled with extreme struggle but gradually with God’s grace things started falling into place where I went on to have 6 decades long illustrious career in Art. I became one of the eminent modern Abstract Painters of India who did 32 solo exhibitions and 52 group exhibitions globally, received National as well as International recognitions & awards from reputed Organizations and several Governments. I was also named as the Kite Man of Ahmedabad for setting up World’s Second Kite Museum in our city by donating all my Kite’s which over the years I had collected from all over the Country. All these achievements and recognition yet I felt incomplete from within. The pain of losing my father to Cancer still pinched me, hence, I decided to turn my pain into a beautiful cause. At 77, I connected with Child Cancer Foundation, Auckland and donated 54 lac rupees for the treatment of Child Cancer which I had raised by selling my paintings. At 84, I associated with Gujarat Cancer Society and Invent Art to raise funds for Cancer Patients. I raised a mammoth amount of 2 Crore rupees by selling my 101 paintings and donated that amount to Gujarat Cancer Society. Today, I am 86, and let me tell you this is just the beginning of my beautiful cause. I will work for this cause till my last breath because I don’t want any individual to suffer what I suffered at 16.

Your Posture why good posture is crucial for your health

To fix your posture, you can practice simple exercises throughout the day, like standing chest stretches and neck presses. To maintain good posture, it's also important to spend less time sitting, and more time standing or walking, whether it's pacing during TV shows or standing in meetings. Fixing your posture prevents neck, back, and joint pain and may even reduce the frequency of headaches.

Why is good posture important? "In good posture, the bones are lined up on top of each other like children's blocks, carrying the weight of the body," says Karen Erickson, DC, a chiropractor in New York City and fellow of the American College of Chiropractic. "Good posture allows the bones to support weight, allowing the muscles to work the least. Poor posture causes the muscles to overwork."

More tips for good posture It may also be helpful to try and spend less time sitting. "The most life-changing advice I can give anyone is simply: Don't sit. For the first time in history, people sit for more hours than they sleep," Erickson says. To minimize the time you spend sitting, you can: Use a standing desk Have walking meetings at work Walk while visiting with friends Stand or pace while talking on the phone "If you have to sit, make sure the chair has good support," Erickson says. Your heels should be under your knees, not tucked under the chair, and your knees and hips should be bent at a 90-degree angle. "Put your screen at eye level and the keyboard at elbow level. Ideally, let your elbows drop to your side," she says. And when you do text or look at your phone or device, hold it at eye level, so your head doesn't tilt down.

Backward bend

•While standing, place your hands behind your back, at the top of your buttocks. •Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, with your toes turned slightly out. •Bend your head, shoulders, and back backward. •Slowly return to standing.

Standing chest stretch

•Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. •Interlock your fingers behind your back, with your palms facing up. •Draw your shoulders back and down, keeping your arms straight, without arching your back. •You should feel the stretch across your chest and shoulders.

Press-up

• Lie on your stomach, with your hands on the ground under your shoulders. • Push up, attempting to straighten your elbows, so that your spine arches back gently. • Keep your hips and legs on the ground. • Use your arms (rather than your back muscles) to hold yourself up. Lower back down.

Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg to staff: Elon Musk says the Biden administration ‘we need to inflict pain’ on Apple shot down his carbon tax pitch A new report claims Mark Zuckerberg told Facebook employees "we need to inflict pain" on Apple in 2018.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg isn't happy with Apple's ad tracking protection feature.

Relations between Facebook and Apple have been worsening in recent months. The two tech titans are facing off against each other over their stance on privacy and user data.

Now, according to sources who spoke on anonymity to The Wall Street Journal, Mark Zuckerberg told Facebook staff ‘we need to inflict pain’ on Apple in 2018. Apparently, the escalation between Facebook and Apple started ticking when Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a TV interview in the midst of Cambridge Analytica that spared the great privacy debate at large. During the interview, Cook said that Apple would never have found itself in the same position as Facebook. Zuckerberg hit back Cook, calling Cook’s comments about Facebook “extremely glib. In private, Zuckerberg was even harsher. According to the Journal, the CEO of the world”s most popular social media company reportedly told his team that ‘we need to inflict pain’ for treating his company so poorly.

we’re not paying for the CO2 capacity of the oceans and atmosphere, we have what in economics is called an unpriced externality

Elon Musk says he pitched the Biden administration on instituting a carbon tax as a way to encourage a faster shift to renewable energy, but he was told the idea was essentially “too politically difficult.” Musk described the conversation with the Biden administration during a new podcast with Joe Rogan that was released Thursday.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Rogan had asked Musk whether a new technological breakthrough is needed to increase the adoption of battery-powered vehicles. Musk argued the bigger issue is that “a hell of a lot of batteries [are] needed” in order to shift away from fossil fuels and toward renewable energy. The best way to encourage that shift, in Musk’s view, is to “put a price on carbon.” “My top recommendation honestly would be just to have a carbon tax,” Musk said. “Because we’re not paying for the CO2 capacity of the oceans and atmosphere, we have what in economics is called an unpriced externality. The market is unable to respond to an unpriced externality. If we just put a price on it, the market will react in a sensible way.”

GoPro Hero6 Black HP Envy 34 Curved All-in-One If you're all about slo-mo and smooth 4K, GoPro's got you covered. GoPro's got a lot to prove. After all, not everyone needs to own a drone or an action cam. And, with many top-tier smartphones packing impressive levels of waterproofing, a GoPro isn't even a necessity for capturing footage in the wet outdoors. But, the new GoPro Hero 6 still retains distinct advantages over other devices. A lot of its strengths are directly related to the how compact and mountable this tiny, powerful action cam is.

A Belkin Dyle Mobile TV Receiver Just when you thought the iPhone and iPad had extended their versatility as far as they can possibly go, we've found yet another use for them: watching live television. ust when you thought the iPhone and iPad had extended their versatility as far as they can possibly go, we've found yet another use for them: watching live television. With Belkin's Dyle Mobile TV Receiver attached to an iPhone or iPad, access to live, local broadcast TV is now as easy as catching a rerun of Everybody Loves Raymond on TV Land. About the size of a pack of Tic Tacs, the 1-ounce device fits any iOS device with a 30pin connector. (For iPhone 5 and iPad mini, you’ll need a Lightning-to-30-pin adapter — possibly the big reason the price of this device has dropped from $150 to only $100 without

there being a hardware update.) After downloading the free Dyle TV app on your iOS device(s) and attaching the Belkin dongle, just extend its titanium antenna. Beware, however, that viewing on the iPhone’s 2-by-4-inch screen is quite a comedown from watching an actual television set. And, currently, Dyle’s U.S. coverage is limited to just over 40 metro areas in which up to five broadcast stations can be received. My testing region, the San Francisco Bay Area, included five local stations, including the local Fox and NBC affiliates, a local independent station, the Qubo kids network, and Telemundo.

major revamp of the previous generation of the Envy 34, this latest iteration rearranges the components by detaching the CPU from the back of the screen and putting it instead in a sturdy base. From that base, a single post rises to support the screen. All of the PC's innards can be found in this discreet foundation, including a beefy and loud Bang & Olufsen speaker bar with four drivers (and two passive radiators) that fire sound waves right at your head. Naturally there are plenty of guts in this box, too: A 2.9GHz Core i7, 16 gigs of RAM, dual storage drives including a 256 gigabyte SSD and a terabyte hard drive, and an AMD Radeon RX 460 graphics card. All of these are desktop components, not mobile parts repurposed into a desktop case. The back and right side of the base are festooned with ports, including a USB-C port, four standard USB ports, Ethernet, an SD card slot, and HDMI in and out (which means you can use the Envy as a monitor for your Xbox if the mood strikes you). Power is supplied through a separate port—and a monstrous brick attached to it. On top of the base, you'll find two additional features: a handy touch-sensitive volume wheel and a Qi-compatible wireless charging hotspot for your phone. The screen of course is the star: 34 inches curved to wrap around your head. The idea, says HP, is that every horizontal point of the screen should be equidistant from your eyes, and the new Envy 34 has a tighter radius than HP's previous curved all-in-one, in recognition that users are sitting closer than expected to the display. Featuring a resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels, Technicolor-certified color reproduction, and eye-searing brightness, it's a real joy to behold. It's almost too much.

We have always tried to give back to our school- From raising 40 lacs during the earthquake to building a large library, From supporting our past teachers to adopting school students who come from poor families. School is our second home and teachers are our second parents.”

want you to imagine a unique classroom- Where teachers who are in their late 80’s or early 90’s return back to school to teach their students who are in their 60’s and 70’s. Just by reading this, it would bring a smile to your face, then think about how happy I would have been to witness such a once in a lifetime moment. Around two years ago, a history was created at our School- Diwan Ballubhai. Our school alumni association was formed one and a half decades ago. Every year, the alumni used to meet on different occasions and would often find ways to give back something to our school. During one such occasion, a friend of mine told me that- ‘Rajesh, I miss our school days. How about for a day we return back to our classrooms in our school uniform?’ At first it seemed silly but somewhere in the back of my mind, the idea stayed with me. Hence two years ago, I shared it with other alumni members and everyone got excited to turn this fun idea into a reality. The next few months were spent in planning the entire initiative- from seeking the availability of past teachers to informing more than 2000 alumni members, from notifying our school authority to classifying different batches in several classrooms. The schedule involved- a Prayer meeting, Two Lectures on different subjects, and lastly a long recess in the form of having a get

In the picture, the former president is seen standing in the centre between Michelle Obama and his elder daughter Malia Obama New Delhi: Former US president Barack Obama tweeted Valentine's Day greetings to his family on Sunday. Taking to Twitter, the former president shared an undated picture of him with his wife Michelle Obama, daughters Malia Ann Obama and Sasha Obama. "Happy Valentine's Day to the three who never fail to make me smile. Your dazzling light makes everything brighter," he tweeted. In the picture, the former president is seen standing in the centre between Michelle Obama and his elder daughter Malia Obama. His younger daughter Sasha Obama is seen beaming in a white dress.

together lunch. We received a humongous response from everyone, where around 1300 ex students and more than 60 past teachers gave their confirmation to be a part of

our ‘Going back to School’ initiative. However, we had one condition that all the students must come in their school uniform. After months of planning, finally the day had arrived. Our entire school and its classrooms were decorated which were waiting to welcome their past teachers as well as ex students. 1300 students were divided into 50 classrooms as per the batches where the senior most batch was of year 1966 while the youngest

batch was of 2014. The oldest student was 75 years old while the oldest teacher was 93 years old. The scenario at the school was a sight to behold. While some students came in cycle, the other came in a school van. Few women came in with ponytails wearing a frock while few men came with oiled hair and spectacles to look studious. While some students brought lunch boxes and compass boxes, the other students came with school bags and tin bags. Few students stood outside the classroom and became a Murga while other students fought to sit on the last bench. During the lecture many students threw paper planes and ate from their lunch box. While some students became monitors, other students played pen fights. The funniest moment was when a 70 year old student went up to a 90 year old teacher and presented an early leave application saying she needs to get home early today. For all the teachers as well as students, it was a nostalgic afternoon filled with warmth and sweet memories. We clicked pictures with our classmates as well as with our teachers. We thanked our teachers and school administration for bringing a huge impact in our lives and helping us make who we are today. In the past, many of us had assured our classmates to stay in touch but went separate ways in the pursuit of our dreams. However, this time we bid goodbye with a promise to stay connected and meet often.

"The 3 Who Never Fail To Make Me Smile": Obama's Valentine's Day Pic

On Saturday, US President Joe Biden also shared a picture of him taking a walk across the White House lawns along with First Lady Jill Biden to check her Valentine's Day decorations. This was the Bidens' first Valentine's in the White House. Obama forged a special bond with Biden during the eight years the former Delaware senator served as his vice president, awarding him the presidential Medal of Freedom in January 2017. Joe Biden became the 46th president of the US with a call to unity, vowing to bridge deep divides and defeat domestic extremism two weeks after a mob attack tried to undo his election victory. On a frigid but sunny day at the very Capitol building that was assaulted on January 6, Biden swore the oath of office moments after Kamala Harris, who became America's first woman vice president, turning the page on Donald Trump's tumultuous four years.

New Survey: Nearly All New York Restaurants Failed To Pay December’s Rent HI INDIA NEWS DESK NEW YORK, NY — Almost every New York City restaurant owner — 92 percent of them, to be precise — couldn’t afford to pay December’s rent, according to a new study. The study, released Tuesday, is part of a rolling series of surveys conducted by the NYC Hospitality Alliance since the coronavirus crisis began. The pandemic quickly put a damper on restaurants’ business — in June, 80 percent of eateries couldn’t afford rent, according to the studies. The number of struggling restaurants has only increased with each month and see-sawing restrictions, such as the only-recent return of indoor dining at 25 percent capacity.

“We’re nearly a year into the public health — deferred rent for restaurants because of and economic crisis that has decimated New COVID-19, according to the survey. York City’s restaurants, bars, and nightlife venues,” Andrew Rigie, the alliance’s executive director, said in a statement. “While the reopening of highly regulated indoor dining is welcome news, we need to safely increase occupancy to 50% as soon as possible, and we urgently need robust and comprehensive financial relief from the federal government.” About 46 percent of restaurants were able to pay some, but not all, rent in December, according to the survey. A full 45 percent couldn’t pay a dime, the survey shows. Just over a third of landlords — 36.5 percent

Air India Sale: Govt Gets A Surprise Bid For National Carrier, Who’s It? HI INDIA NEWS DESK

T

as a “turnaround tycoon” after he bought controlling stakes in financially stressed companies such as Dunlop India, Falcon Tyres, and Jessop & Company. However, he tapped off that pedestal following the abovementioned firms entering the Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction. The companies are currently facing liquidation. Despite political concerns coming in the way of the reversal of these three sick firms, Air India would be a different case, a source told the Business Standard, adding that the

he government, besides two expressions of interest (EoI) for Air India, has received a surprise bid from Pawan Ruia, chairman of Ruia Group. The businessman has submitted an EoI to buy a 100% stake in the embattled national carrier. Tata Group and an employees’ consortium of Air India are other entities that have expressed interest in Air India. Ruia, achartered accountant - turned- businessman, was better known in Kolkata business circles

A Joint Statement From Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot And Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle HI INDIA NEWS DESK CHICAGO, IL -Our goal is to get as many people vaccinated as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle

Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot

That said, our greatest challenge in doing so is the very limited supply of vaccine we are receiving. While we

are making progress every day with vaccinating people in 1a and 1b, at this time we are not being supplied with enough doses that would allow us to expand eligibility in these phases.Doing so in Chicago and Cook County would add well over

one million additional people to 1b, and the result would be that those currently eligible, including seniors, frontline essential workers and those in our most heavily COVIDburdened communities, would have an even harder time getting a vaccine. These phases were established after careful study and consideration, and are based on guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We recognize the Governor must make tough choices and consider needs across this diverse state, but given the limited supply of vaccine, we must also make the tough choices as the leaders of the most populous city and county in the state. We look forward to expanding eligibility as vaccine supply improves.

Centre would resolutely back any company that wins the bid in order to ensure a turnaround for Air India. The EoI was reportedly submitted under a consortium led by Kanti Commercials Private Ltd, a company associated with the Ruia Group. The other firms associated with the consortium are Fragment Nivesh and Enormous Nivesh, both related parties of Ruia-owned companies. Meanwhile, Ruia has not yet commented on queries about his interest in Air India. It is widely believed that unless he brings in a financial partner or a big company to support his bid for the national carrier, he is unlikely to win. As per the eligibility criteria set by transaction advisor EY, which is currently assessing the EoIs from potential parties, a bidder should have a net worth of Rs 3,500 crore. The government is hoping to fetch approximately Rs 15,000 crore from the sale of Air India, its subsidiary Air India Express and AISATS – a 50:50 joint venture partnership between Air India and Singapore Airport Terminal Services (SATS) Limited.

Chicago Entrepreneur Anip Patel’s South Asian Dating App ‘Mirchi’ Is Getting Hot

By Mayank Chhaya, Special to Hi India

C

hicago entrepreneur Anip Patel’s South Asian dating app ‘Mirchi’ is getting hot Among the young South Asian population these days not every hookup is about prospective marriage, long-term relationship or even a one-night stand. It is often equally about grabbing a beer and shooting the breeze among like-minded youngsters. With that simple logic in mind, Anip Patel of Chicago along with two others decided to create an app barely seven months ago which lets its users make “meaningful connections.” “Especially in the South Asian community moving on from the biodata to the traditional arranged marriage to getting a reference to somebody, in today’s day and age we are all about dating apps. Not everyone is always ready to get married. So we have made sure that we have put friendships and relationships,” Patel, who is 30 and CEO and a co-founder of the app makers Mirchi, says. “If you are a 25-year-old guy in Chicago who does not want to get married right now but wants to make a connection, we allow him to make friends. You can make somebody of the same gender your friend or date somebody of the opposite gender or if you are LGBTQ+ community you could date or make friends with the same gender,” Patel says. Mirchi, which Anip says has a “sexy, spicy” ring about it, has been developed keeping in mind South Asian sensibilities even though it can be used by anyone. In less than seven months it has notched up 250,000 users in five geographies, including here in America, and is growing at a rapid pace. “We let our users tell a story about themselves, put video features

rather than just photographs. That helps facilitate connection,” he says. The app uses complex algorithms to create specific user profiles that make establishing friendship/ relationship easier. The data collected by the app, says Anip, is “completely secure” and the company makes sure that none of that is leveraged unfairly. “We do not sell that data. We do not do anything with that data. We use that data for internal reference such as what does an 18-year-old male like as opposed to a 30-year-old female. We use that to drive our ads and analytics,” Patel told Hi India in an interview.

Anip says the name Mirchi is aimed at telling the world that “We are loud, proud and unapologetic.” At the same time, he insists, that inclusiveness is an essential part of Mirchi. To that end, it decided to endorse the LGBTQ+ community. “Once we started endorsing LGBTQ+ community we started receiving a tre-

mendous amount of love throughout the nation.

Asked how the company would resist the temptation of data mining as part of its revenue generation, Patel says, “It is not like we are seeking to sell the data or use it to anybody’s disadvantage. But we do use our data to know who our customer is. Our app is absolutely free. We do not run any ads but if you want to match with more than seven people per day, we charge a fee.” “So if you can be patient our app is free. If you cannot be patient, you pay us,” he says. Anip has a background in IT consulting. He owns a South Asian management company. He says he is also a comedian. Apart from IT, talent management and comedy Anip has also managed to create an app that he claims is the “highest grossing and fastest growing dating app in the world.” Mirchi’s predominant user base is in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Africa. The gender breakup of the user base, he says, is 65 percent men and 35 percent women, numbers, he says, “are very normal for dating apps.” Asked about the genesis of the app, Anip cites his own example. “The app basically users make friends taking into consideration that not everyone is ready to get married or even get into a relationship. It is open to making meaningful connections. I was in New York a couple of months ago and I wanted to hangout. I could go on a date. I know a lot of girls there but I just want to hangout with someone, grab a beer, go to a bar and have fun. There was no way I could have done that without knowing somebody in that city. So how do I meet someone of my culture, South Asian, maybe go out watch a

Bollywood movie? Before we came there was no app for that,” he says. Signing into the app it gives the user the choice of dating, friendship and friendship/dating. He points out that there are apps like Bumble for all genders and nationalities and he wanted to do something for the South Asian community, “especially those young adolescents whom we want to mentor and network with people.” “Our app allows you to show what you do, where you work. I have people who are 18 reaching out to me saying they want to be a CEO one day, do I have five minutes to talk? To inspire and encourage these kids is a great gift,” Anip says. Anip says the name Mirchi is aimed at telling the world that “We are loud, proud and unapologetic.” At the same time, he insists, that inclusiveness is an essential part of Mirchi. To that end, it decided to endorse the LGBTQ+ community. “Once we started endorsing LGBTQ+ community we started receiving a tremendous amount of love throughout the nation. “But with the love and inclusion that we offer, it was a big step within the South Asian community. It also came with a lot of consequences. Mirchi is the first South Asian dating app to support and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, marking a big step for the otherwise conservative Asian community. Mirchi’s level of inclusiveness offers the LGBTQ+ community a new precedent and a big step forward in the South Asian dating game. Recently, Mirchi app was not approved to advertise with one of South Asia’s largest media companies. The media company said, “We do not support or promote this, nor do we believe in it or are prepared to put this forward to the public.” “Losing an ad space in one of the largest media outlets in South Asian is definitely not something we saw coming. It’s only a minor setback

but not enough to stop us in our tracks. We believe in what we are doing and trying to accomplish, and will not let obstacles like this deter us,” Anip says. “We have people around the world cry and send us love messages for being inclusive saying they are finally being heard,” Anip says. “We have an option where someone can choose the word Hijra. We have 500 different words for who you identify as. No South Asian dating app in the world allows that,” he says pointing out their inclusive advocacy. Equally significantly no South Asian app other than Mirchi has removed the caste system. “We are the only app in the world that does not have the caste system. If you go to Shadi.com you could pick that you are only looking for someone who is Brahmin. On our app you cannot do that. We are in a world where this should be out. Why are we still doing this? That’s why we are loud, proud and unapologetic. We don’t care what anybody tells us. We do our best to see that everybody finds a connection,” he says. As its popularity grows, Mirchi is already attracting covetous gaze for acquisition by investors and

companies. “We have been offered crazy amounts of money. We have already been offered high seven to eight figures. We are very tempted but we are not going to just give that up to anybody anytime soon. It is intriguing because we have only out in a couple of thousand dollars but we are getting multimillion deals,” he says. According to Anip, “Mirchi hopes to be one of the leading South Asian dating and friendship apps and have a worldwide presence. The company also aims to donate over $100,000 every year to various South Asian creatives to further advance the diversity of South Asian culture, spirit, creativity, and ingenuity. Mirchi both encompasses and promotes within other South Asians who truly bring light to our culture in multidimensional and modernized ways.”The company’s website says, “Beyond dating, Mirchi aims to bridge artists and like-minded individuals and create a community that would be open to various collaborations. To echo the cofounder’s words, the app presents no limitations for its users, whether they are looking for a relationship or trying to find new friends as they move to a new city.”

Co-founded by three ambitious youngsters it is attracting covetous multi-million dollar acquisition offersAmong the young South Asian population these days not every hookup is about prospective marriage, long-term relationship or even onenight stand. It is often equally about grabbing a beer and shooting the breeze among like-minded youngsters.
