Russia could launch chemical attack in Ukraine - White House

HiIndia Newsdesk RUSSIA could be planning a chemical or biological weapon attack in Ukraine - and “we should all be on the lookout”, the White House has said. Press secretary Jen Psaki said Russia’s claims about US biological weapon labs, and chemical weapon development in Ukraine, were preposterous. She called the false claims an “obvious ploy” to try to justify further premeditated, unprovoked attacks. It comes after Western officials shared similar concerns about fresh attacks. They said they were “very concerned” about the risk the war could escalate, and particularly the possibility of Russia using non-conventional weapons. This most likely refers to chemical weapons although the term also covers tactical (small-scale) nuclear weapons, biological weapons and dirty bombs. “We’ve got good reason to be concerned,”

said one Western official. They said this was partly because of what had been seen in other places where Russia has been engaged - notably Syria where chemical weapons were used by

Kamala Harris heads to Poland amid Nato fighter jet rift US Vice-President Kamala Harris has begun her trip to Poland and Romania, giving her a chance to negotiate directly with Polish leaders on the issue of fighter jet transfers to Ukraine. The topic has exposed disagreements within the Nato alliance. On Tuesday, Poland’s offer to provide the US with MiG-29 fighter jets as an intermediary step toward transferring them to Ukraine was rejected as “not tenable” by American officials. On Wednesday afternoon, US Defence Department spokesman John Kirby was even more definitive, saying such a transfer presented a “high risk” of a Russian response that leads to a

military escalation with Nato. “We assess that adding aircraft to the Ukrainian inventory is not likely to significantly change the effectiveness of Ukrainian Air Force relative to Russian

Venezuela releases two jailed US citizens after talks

HiIndia Newsdesk VENEZUELA has released two jailed US citizens following talks with a high-level US delegation in Caracas. One of those freed is Gustavo Cárdenas, an executive with Citgo, a US refining company once controlled by Venezuela’s state oil firm. The other is Jorge Alberto Fernández, who was arrested last year in Venezuela and accused of terrorism. US President Joe Biden confirmed their release and said both had been “wrongfully detained in Venezuela”. In a statement, President Biden

Patient with pig heart no more

HiIndia Newsdesk THE first person to have his failing heart replaced with that of a genetically altered pig in a groundbreaking operation died Tuesday afternoon at the University of Maryland Medical Center, two months after the transplant surgery. David Bennett Sr, who lived in Maryland, was 57. He had severe heart disease, and had agreed to receive the experimental pig’s heart after he was rejected from several waiting lists to receive a human heart. It was unclear whether his body had rejected the foreign organ. “There was no obvious cause identified at the time of his death,” a hospital spokeswoman said.

using them - it’s a clear pattern.” Earlier on Wednesday, the UK Ministry of Defence said in a tweet that Russia had used thermobaric rockets in Ukraine. These rockets are also known as vacuum bombs because they suck in oxygen from the surrounding air to generate a high-temperature explosion. This makes them more devastating than conventional explosives of a similar size, and can have a terrible impact on people caught in their blast radius. In a s u b s e qu e nt up d at e , t h e ministry said it was likely “experienced mercenaries” from Russian private military companies associated with the Kremlin were deploying to fight in Ukraine. The update added Russian mercenaries have been accused of committing human rights abuses in Africa and the Middle East, including in Syria, Libya and the Central African Republic.

RUSSIA’S war against Ukraine has hurt American families with gas prices shooting up and it is going to rise further, US President Joe Biden said

after announcing a ban on the import of Russian oil and gas. Biden, however, promised of doing everything he can to minimize “(Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s price hike here at home”. By an executive order signed on Tuesday, Biden banned the import of Russian crude oil and certain petroleum products, liquefied natural gas, and coal. This step is aimed at depriving Russia of billions of dollars in revenues from US drivers and consumers annually. Last year, the US imported nearly 7,00,000 barrels of crude oil and refined petroleum products from Russia daily.

Zelensky: Children’s hospital attack a ‘war crime’ A Russian airstrike has devastated a maternity hospital Wednesday in the besieged port city of Mariupol, with Ukrainian officials saying at least 17 people had been wounded

HiIndia Newsdesk A Russian airstrike devastated a maternity hospital Wednesday in the besieged port city of Mariupol amid growing warnings from the West that

Moscow’s invasion is about to take a more brutal and indiscriminate turn. Ukrainian officials said the attack wounded at least 17 people. The ground shook more than a mile away when the Mariupol complex was

hit by a series of blasts that blew out windows and ripped away much of the front of one building. Police and soldiers rushed to the scene to evacuate victims, carrying out a heavily pregnant and bleeding woman on a stretcher as light snow drifted down on burning and mangled cars and trees shattered by the blast. Another woman wailed as she clutched her child. In the courtyard, a blast crater extended at least two

Oil prices plunge as UAE Absent UK soldiers may have travelled to Ukraine, supports supply boost British Army says

HiIndia Newsdesk OIL prices have plunged after the United Arab Emirates said it supported increasing production. Brent crude, an international benchmark, fell more than 17% at one point after the statement by the UAE, a member of the powerful oil cartel Opec. The fall follows weeks of skyrocketing oil prices due to supply disruptions sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The rising prices have put a financial squeeze on families around the world. President Joe Biden and other leaders have pledged to try to ease the price pressures for households. Officials from the US have been in talks with oil producers aimed at boosting supply. “We favour production increases and will be encouraging Opec to consider higher production levels,” Ambassador Yousuf Al Otaiba said in a statement tweeted by the UAE Embassy in Washington.

HiIndia Newsdesk A small number of British soldiers have disobeyed orders and may have travelled to Ukraine to fight, the British Army has confirmed. The soldiers were absent without leave and may have gone to Ukraine “in a personal capacity”, the Army said. “We are actively and strongly encouraging them to return to the UK,” a spokesperson added. All service personnel are banned from travelling to Ukraine until further notice. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss has previously said she supports UK civilians who might want to go to Ukraine to help fight, and that it was up to people to make their own decisions. But the government later clarified that the Foreign Office advises against all travel to Ukraine.

Australia floods: PM Morrison to declare a national emergency HiIndia Newsdesk AUSTRALIAN PM Scott Morrison says he will declare a national emergency over flooding in two states. The disaster in New South Wales (NSW) and Queensland has killed 20 people and inundated thousands of homes in the past two weeks, after record rains. Federal and state governments have faced anger for not acting faster to help residents. Mr Morrison’s declaration - a national first - will allow federal authorities to intervene more directly. He made the announcement on Wednesday in the town of Lismore, saying it had endured a “once in a 500-year event”. Four people died in flooding there last week. “What has been seen here is nothing more than heartbreaking. You have to see it, you have to smell it, you have to feel it,” he said.

Russia soon unable to pay its debts, warns agency

HiIndia Newsdesk Russia will soon be unable to pay its debts, according to a leading credit ratings agency. FITCH Ratings downgraded its view of the country’s government debt, warning a default is “imminent”. The move comes amid increasing international sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine. A credit rating is intended to help investors understand the level of risk they face in buying a country’s debt - or bonds.

Orchestra plays Ode to Joy at Kyiv square

HiIndia Newsdesk ON a Kyiv square where recent popular uprisings have scuppered Moscow’s ambitions in Ukraine, an orchestra assembled before a small crowd on Wednesday to play the national anthem as Russian forces advanced on the city. The Kyiv-Classic Symphony Orchestra also performed an excerpt from Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, on which the EU’s anthem is based — a nod to the Ukraine government’s desire to move closer to Europe and away from Russia’s orbit.

Women give birth in basements, bunkers

HiIndia Newsdesk RU S S IA h a s been continuing its assault on Ukrainian cities. Hospitals and maternity wards have been in the firing line. Many expectant mothers have been forced to give birth in cellars and air raid shelters. It was late February when Kyiv local Svetlana Lukash started going into labor. Despite air raid sirens blaring, and a city-wide curfew, Lukash was taken to a maternity ward. The pregnant woman, in danger of experiencing complications during childbirth, did not want to take any unnecessary risks. “You cannot give birth at home, on your sofa, when there could be complications,” she told DW. “Once we arrived at hospital, we were taken to the basement.”

The revolution marches on It was a sea of saffron as Yogi Adityanath waved victory signs at hundreds of BJP workers gathered at the party office, many waving the party’s flag. HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who won a record second term today in India’s most politically important state, celebrated his big triumph with holi colours and sweets at the BJP’s office in Lucknow. It was a sea of saffron as Yogi Adityanath waved victory signs at hundreds of BJP workers gathered at the party office, many waving the party’s flag. Before the counting of votes, the BJP had promised “early holi” celebrations. “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, today the BJP won a majority in Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The voters have blessed Modi-ji’s policies of development and good governance,” the Chief Minister told the ecstatic crowd. Today’s win catapults the saffron-wearing Yogi Adityanath even higher, to the BJP’s top rung. The win def ied predictions of antiincumbency hitting the BJP in UP amid a devastating wave of Covid and the farmer protests. Many see Yogi Adityanath, 49, who is known to make divisive speeches, as a Prime Minister candidate one day. In a recent interview to Reuters, however, the priest-politician said: “I am just a monk... I will serve the people of the state till the party wants or else I will serve people through my ... temple.”

Mann cabinet to take oath in Bhagat Singh’s village HiIndia Newsdesk

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday boasted about the significance of his party’s victory in the Punjab Assembly polls. Kejriwal was accompanied by Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia as he spoke about the AAP’s performance at the party’s headquarters in Delhi. Whoever is watching me on TV, you must be angry at all the injustice. So join AAP... First there was a revolution in Delhi, then one in Punjab, now it will spread to the country.”

AAP chief ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann on Thursday said the oath-taking ceremony of the new Punjab cabinet will be held at Khatkarkalan in Nawanshahr district, the ancestral village of legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. “The oathtaking ceremony will not be held at Raj Bhawan, but at Khatkarkalan. UKRAINE: CIVILIANS EVACUATED FROM TWO AREAS UNDER ATTACK

A convoy of buses and cars carrying mostly foreign students left the northern city of Sumy, while dozens of people left Irpin near Kyiv. Previous evacuations have failed, with Russia accused of shelling routes. The UN says more than two million people have now fled Ukraine since Russia launched its invasion nearly two weeks ago. Evacuations from Sumy began on Tuesday morning, with buses heading towards the city of Poltava, further south and away from the front lines. Indian and Chinese students were among those evacuated. The Russian army “launched an attack right at the humanitarian corridor” and “did not let children, women and elderly people leave the city,” the defence

One resident, Diana, told the BBC it was terrifying. “It seemed to me like hell,” she said. “Constant shelling above you, and at the same time, no electricity, no heat and no water. The coroner service cannot go and just pick [up] the bodies properly because of the shelling.

Indian Student in Ukraine

The Pakistani who helped Indian students in Ukraine WHEN Nitesh Singh, founder of Team SOS India, got started on evacuating stranded Indian students from Ukraine, he had no idea how to bring them back. All he knew was that he would need a lot of buses and cars to ensure that the Indian students reach the borders of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia or Romania. He tried his best to organise tour operators for buses but could not find one, until he managed to get in touch with a Pakistani citizen settled in Ukraine, Moazam Khan. “Moazam was like a god-send for our team. He was very helpful and many times did not charge even a single dollar for the Indian students who had no money to pay,” Nitesh tells. At last count, Moazam says he had arranged safe passage for 2,500 Indian students stuck in different places in Ukraine. Moazam says, “When I saved the first batch of Indian students, I had no idea the crisis was so huge. However, soon I found that my mobile number had gone viral on many Indian WhatsApp groups. After that I started getting non-stop phone calls in the middle of the night for rescue operations. And till date, I have evacuated 2,500 Indian students.” Moazam came to Ukraine 11 years ago as his elder brother is married to a Ukrainian citize.; Hailing from the Tarbela cantonment area near Islamabad, Moazam studied civil engineering in Ukraine, but then gave up his career as a civil engineer to start a bus tour operator business in Ukraine. “I have been friends with many Indians even before the Russia-Ukraine

Romania is a 3-hour drive and Poland a two-and-a-half hour drive. Moazam says he has lost count as to how many times he drove Indian students in his buses to the border of these countries. “I had no time to count. The only thing top-most in my mind was evacuation. If buses were not available, I used to arrange for private cars or taxis,” he says.

In many cases, I didn’t take money because the Indian students had run out of cash.’ ‘The biggest high was the blessings that these students’s parents used to give me on the phone or send messages thanking me on WhatsApp.’

While many Ukrainians bus drivers raised the price of bus tickets to $250 per Indian student, Moazam Khan continued to charge only $20 to $25 to drive them to the Ukraine border.

war started,” he says. “In these 11 years I have made many friends at Ternopil National Medical University. Many of them have passed out and are back in India. They are still in touch with me and we are good friends.” According to Moazam, Indians feel comfortable with him because of the common language link and therefore a connect forms between them immediately.

“In Ukraine communicating is the most difficult part for any foreigner. People here only speak Ukrainian or some speak Russian. English is spoken very little. In this scenario, I speak Urdu and most of the Indian students speak Hindi, so this connects us instantly. Hindi and Urdu are almost the same and therefore we gel well,” Moazam says. From Ternopil, Hungar y and Slovakia are a 5-hour drive while

“Safety of life was the utmost priority in my mind. Luckily, Russians never bombed the areas in which I drove,” he adds. Seeing the crisis and demand for buses going up, many Ukrainian bus drivers raised the price of bus tickets to $250 per student to drive them to the Ukraine border but Moazam did not do that. “I charged them only $20 to $25. I knew these Indian students had no money. In many cases, I didn’t take money because they had run out of cash before coming from Kyiv to Ternopil. The biggest high was the blessings that these Indian students’s parents used to give me on the phone or send messages thanking me on WhatsApp,” he says.

The ODNI said that relations between New Delhi and Beijing will remain strained in the wake of the lethal clash in 2020, the most serious in decades. “Previous standoffs have demonstrated that persistent low-level friction on the Line of Actual Control has the potential to escalate swiftly,” the report said.

passage,” an official, who was privy to the developments that led to the evacuation effort on Tuesday. Sources said the calls between the leaders gave the initiative a “final push”, and the decks were cleared after officials in Moscow and Kiev got instructions to create a “humanitarian corridor”. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar worked the phone lines, too, while Defence Ministry officials reached out to their counterparts and two Indian ambassadors — Pavan Kapoor in Moscow and Partha Satpathy in Kiev — liaised with top officials in the two capitals. The Red Cross in Geneva was also contacted and they alerted their unit in Ukraine, which helped with some of the arrangements. And yet, there was intense apprehension over whether the ceasefire would hold or not, as everyone waited anxiously while day rolled into night.

Several phone calls were made and messages exchanged before the final green signal came through about midnight on Monday, even as the students were asked to stay away from social media — no tweets, no posts on Instagram. Near Sumy, three teams of Indian officials and local embassy staff were stationed in three different cities. Local Ukrainian contacts of the embassy also helped. Finally, the buses were able to reach Sumy after facing a lot of challenges, the official said. It was hard to find drivers, and the vehicles were mostly commandeered by Ukrainian army personnel. Some private cars were roped in. There was also a shortage of fuel, especially for long journeys. The local contacts helped out once again. Officials were aware, meanwhile, that some roads were damaged, and a few bridges destroyed by shelling in and around Sumy. Finally, 12 buses were able to reach a point in Sumy, from where they were able to pick up the students from a hostel. The buses then moved to Poltava in central Ukraine where they were expected to reach late Tuesday night. The next step is for the students to take the train to the western border from where they would enter another country. Once the paperwork is complete, which is expected to take a day, the students would be flown back to India on at least three aircraft by the morning of March 10 or 11, sources said. “It wasn’t an easy task to get them out…and there were a lot of challenges, but we managed without risking anyone’s life,” another official, who was privy to the arrangements, told.

Indian American Sudha Setty, has been appointed the dean of the City University of New York (CUNY) School of Law, America’s leading public interest law school. She will be the first person of South Asian descent to lead a City University of New York school. Setty has been the dean of the Western New England University School of Law since 2018. Setty is an expert in comparative law and is an influential scholar on constitutional rights and national security. In 2018, she was elected to membership in the American Law Institute and also as a fellow of the American Bar Foundation.

One of the biggest upsets this election is state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu’s loss in Amritsar East, where he was locked in a high-profile contest with Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia. Sidhu – who was sent thrice to Parliament from Amritsar, all three on a BJP ticket, and once to the Punjab Assembly, as the Congress candidate from Amritsar East – has conceded defeat. He put out a tweet saying, “The voice of the people is the voice of God …. Humbly accept the mandate of the people of Punjab …. Congratulations to Aap !!!” Sidhu, who had a tough rival in Majithia, also faced opposition within the Congress party. His absence from

the constituency and poor coordination with councillors and voters didn’t help either. While he was not the CM face, given the party’s disastrous performance in the elections, all knives will be out for him considering that it was his open attack on the government led by Amarinder Singh that exposed the differences within the party and the government. He also had to fight the perception that the BJP tried to create about him – that he was soft on Pakistan and its Prime Minister Imran Khan. The cricketer-turned-commentatorturned-politician has been in politics for more than 18 years. Yet, many see him as an unlikely politician – one who spoke his mind regardless of the party line or diktats.

The revelation was made by the actor in an interview with a YouTube channel called Chalchitra Talks. "I suffer from an ailment called onomatomania. I'm not joking. It's a medical condition. You can check it in the dictionary," he said. "Onomatomania is an ailment in which you keep repeating a word or a phrase, a sentence or a verse or an entire speech for no reason at all. Further speaking, he also talked about his wife, actor Ratna Pathak Shah, and said that they often recommend books to each other but rarely go through them. He said, "If I like something, I pass it on to her and vice versa. We don't always read the books we pass on to each other." Biden, speaking from the White House, launched a fierce attack on the Russian leader, saying the conflict was exacting a “horrible price” and had already created two million refugees. “Russia may continue to grind out its advance at a horrible price but this much is already clear -- Ukraine will never be a victory for Putin,” warned Biden, as he took aim at Moscow’s economic lifeline by banning imports of Russian oil. “Putin may be able to take a city, but he’ll never be able to hold the country.” Despite already unprecedented Western sanctions, Putin has pressed on with his military advance -- although Moscow agreed to set up “humanitarian corridors” from four Ukrainian cities on the 13th day of the conflict. Kyiv has branded the corridors a

publicity stunt as many of the exit routes lead into Russia or its ally Belarus. Both sides accuse each other of ceasefire violations. The number of refugees flooding across Ukraine’s borders to escape towns devastated by shelling and air strikes passed two million, in Europe’s fastestgrowing refugee crisis since World War II, according to the United Nations. Addressing t he snow balling

humanitarian crisis, Biden promised the United States would stand by its allies. “The United States will share in the responsibility of caring for the refugees so that the costs do not fall entirely on the European countries bordering Ukraine.” “Putin’s war has caused an enormous suffering and needless loss of life -- of women, children, everyone,” Biden said, accusing the Russian leader of targeting

civilians indiscriminately -- in schools, hospitals and apartment buildings. “But Putin seems determined to continue on his murderous path no matter the cost.” US of f icials say Washington’s overarching goal is to confine the conflict to Ukraine to avoid spillover that could provoke Putin into a direct -- and potentially nuclear -- confrontation. With US intelligence officials now believing Russia is digging in for a protracted war, Washington’s priority is to pump military assistance into Ukraine’s resistance to help it fight back. “We’re going to continue to support the brave Ukrainian people as they fight for their country,” Biden said, promising to “support them against tyranny, oppression, violent acts of subjugation.” “When the history of this war is written, Putin’s war on Ukraine will have left Russia weaker and the rest of the world stronger,” he vowed.

Russia Now Global Economic Pariah, Ruble Worth Less Than One Penny: US WASHINGTON: Russia has become a global economic p ar i a h af ter it att acke d Ukraine and the international community has joined the US in imposing tough sanctions against Moscow, the Joe Biden administration has claimed. US President Joe Biden termed the package of economic sanctions enforced against Russia “most significant in history” and claimed that it has caused consequential damage to the Russian economy. “It has caused the Russian economy to crater. The Ruble is now down 50 per cent and worth less than one American penny since Putin announced his war,” he told reporters at the White House after announcing an immediate ban on import of Russian oil and gas. “We cut Russia’s largest banks from the international financial system and it has crippled their ability to do business with the rest of the world,” Joe Biden said.

Russia-Ukraine War: US President Joe Biden termed the package of economic sanctions enforced against Russia “most significant in history” and claimed that it has caused consequential damage to the Russian economy. US President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced the US would ban the import of Russian oil and gas, “targeting the main artery of Russia’s economy” in response to its invasion of Ukraine. Eu ro p e , w h i c h i s f a r more dependent on Russian energy than the United States, announced Tuesday a plan to cut gas imports from Russia by two-thirds this year, The Washington Post reported.

The latest move is likely to escalate further tension between the two countries and would impose a greater economic cost to invading Ukraine. A senior official in the Biden administration later said, “As a result of our historic coordination, Russia has become a global economic and financial pariah. “Over 30 counties, representing well over half the world’s economy,

have announced sanctions that impose immediate and debilitating economic costs on Russia, cut off its access to high tech, sap its growth potential and weaken its military for years to come.” By isolating Russia’s Central Bank from the global financial system, the US has disarmed Putin’s war chest of foreign reserves and he can do very little to slow the freefall of his currency, the official claimed.

“By blocking transactions and freezing the assets of his largest banks, we’ve shut down Putin’s ability to do business with the world.” President Biden told reporters that the US is choking off Russia’s access to technology, like semiconductors, that are its economic strength and weaken its military for years to come. “Maj or comp anies are pulling out of Russia entirely without even being asked. O ver the weekend, Visa, MasterCard and American Express suspended their services in Russia, joining a growing list of American and global companies from Ford to Nike to Apple,” he said. “The US Stock Exchange has halted trading and many Russian securities. The private sector is united against Russia’s vicious war of choice. The US Department of Justice has assembled a dedicated task force to go after crimes of Russian oligarchs.”

Australian cricket icon Shane Warne passes away at 52

SHANE Warne, Australian cricket legend who helped his nation win the World Cup in 1999 and was part of five Ashes-winning teams during his career, died aged 52 on Friday. “Shane was found unresponsive in his villa and despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived,” Warne’s management confirmed in a statement to Australian media outlet Fox Sports.

Australian government confirms state funeral for Shane Warne AUSTRALIAN spin legend Shane Warne, who died of a suspected heart attack on Friday while holidaying in Thailand, will receive a state funeral, a government official confirmed on Sunday. Australian MP Daniel Andrews, the Premier of Victoria, announced on Twitter that Warne’s family has allowed the public to mourn with them.

Shane Warne’s room had blood stains on floor and bath towels: Thai police SKYNEWS.COM.AU quoted Thai media saying that the Thai police had found blood on the floor and bath towels in the room Warne was staying. “A large amount of blood was found in the room,” Satit Polpinit, a commander of the local provincial police, told Thai media.

Warne’s death a “personal loss”, playing with him one of highlights of my career: Dravid “I had the privilege and honour to play against Shane Warne. More importantly the great privilege of getting to know him personally and playing with him and alongside him as a colleague, I think that will probably be one of the highlights of my cricketing career,” Dravid said

For the first time in 49 Tests, Kohli’s 50-plus Test average under threat

Kohli will have to score at least 43 in the first innings of the Day-night Test against Sri Lanka to maintain an average of over 50. HiIndia Newsdesk IT was in his 52nd Test match that Virat Kohli’s average first touched the lofty 50s. Since then, it has never plunged below the gold standard of elite Test-match batsmanship. But if he gets out below 43 runs in the next innings in Bangalore, his average, which is now 50.35, would drop below 50 for the first time in 49 Tests. At his peak, he touched 55.1 and looked set for an upward curve, before it came crashing down. Since his summit, which he achieved when racking up his highest Test score of 254 not out against South Africa, he has averaged only a fraction above 30. A casualty of the dip has been, naturally, his average. Though Kohli himself has made less fuss about numbers and put more emphasis on the impact of those knocks, a sub-50 average would dilute his credentials to be among the finest batsmen of all-time. The greats, despite their occasional lean patches, have always maintained a career average of 50. Sunil Gavaskar’s has never dropped from the 50s since his Test debut. Once their average crossed 50, Sachin Tendulkar (despite an arid last phase) and Rahul Dravid never let it plummet below this benchmark.

JERSEY CITY, NJ- Gas prices hit their highest levels since 2008 Thursday and at some stations in New Jersey, the dreaded price of $4 a gallon for regular has already been reached. Thankfully, that is not the average price, but experts said $4 per gallon isn’t far away due to factors ranging from the war in Ukraine to the seasonal switch from winter grade gasoline. “You’re going to hit it,” said said Tom Kloza, Oil Price Information Service global petroleum analyst. “There’s a good chance we might hit it this month.” gasbuddy.com website reported the lowest prices in the state range from $3.21 to $3.39 a gallon for regular, primarily at unbranded gas stations and discount retailers such as Costco. The highest prices ranged from a $4.17

to a mind-numbing $4.99 per gallon for regular, all of these are at “name brand” stations. That practice is called “zone pricing” where stations in affluent areas, and some poor towns and off interstate highways, have higher prices than the state average, said Robert Sinclair, AAA Northeast spokesman. Even without likely price increases due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, gas prices would go up anyway because of the seasonal switch from winter blend to summer gas, Kloza said. That could increase pump prices between 10 to 20 cents per gallon by mid-April, Sinclair said. The war in Ukraine has oil markets on edge, where looming sanctions and unofficial sanctions by oil companies and shippers could mean the loss 10 million barrels of Russian oil a day. The impact on the price of diesel fuel, which is used by trucks, ships and trains, will be worse, and could reach $4.50 a gallon, increasing shipping costs, Kloza said. Homeowners also could be in for sticker shock if they need to top off their tank with diesel’s cousin, heating oil, before spring, he said. President Joe Biden, a Democrat, announced in his State of the Union address this week that another 30 million barrels of oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve will be released to ease gas prices.

Russia Declares

“Regime Of Silence” To Allow Ukraine Evacuations HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: Russia will hold fire and open humanitarian corridors in Ukraine capital Kyiv and three other cities from 0700 GMT (12.30 pm IST) today, the Interfax news agency cited Russia’s defence ministry as saying. Russia announced a ceasefire in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumy from 12.30 pm IST on Monday. The humanitarian corridors are being set up at the personal request of French President Emmanuel Macron, Russia’s defence ministry said.

“Don’t Think I Would Call Him The Greatest”: Sunil Gavaskar HiIndia Newsdesk

India batting legend Sunil Gavaskar expressed his shock at the untimely death of Australian spin great Shane Warne. Gavaskar lavished praise on Warne’s contribution to cricket, however, said that the Australian was not the greatest spinner of all time. “For me, the Indian spinners and Muttiah Muralitharan were certainly better than Warne. Because look at Warne’s record against India. It was pretty ordinary against India,” Gavaskar said

Efforts to evacuate civilians from the besieged city of Mariupol failed for a second time today due to repeated ceasefire violations. Residents in the city are without power and water. A barrage of Russian missiles destroys Vinnytsia airport in central Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. Three civilians, trying to flee Irpin, were killed by mortar fire, reports BBC. Ukraine and Russia are expected to hold the third round of negotiation talks on Monday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that he will achieve his goals in Ukraine “through negotiation or through war”.

China Says Ukraine Rejects Russia’s Proposed Humanitarian Corridors Russia Friendship “Rock Solid” HiIndia Newsdesk

The third round of talks between Russia and Ukraine about ending hostilities are expected to be held today. HiIndia Newsdesk

Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk has said a Russian proposal to evacuate civilians out of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Mariupol and Sumy is not an acceptable option as the humanitarian corridors

mostly lead to Russian cities. Earlier on Monday, Russia proposed six humanitarian corridors. Three of them exited to Russian cities, one to Belarus and two to central and southeastern Ukraine. Vereshchuk called on Russia to agree to a cease-fire from Monday morning to allow Ukrainians to evacuate toward the western Ukrainian city of Lviv instead. Ukraine received Russia’s proposal early on Monday morning after French President Emmanuel Macron held talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Vereshchuk told a televised briefing.

Soaring Oil Prices Send Rupee To Lifetime-Low Of 77.01 Per Dollar The rupee hit a fresh lifetime low of 77.01 per dollar on Monday after starting the session at a previous record low of 76.96. HiIndia Newsdesk

The rupee hit a fresh lifetime low of 77.01 per dollar on Monday after starting the session at a low of 76.96 as a surge in crude oil above $130 threatened to push up imported inflation and widening trade deficits. The currency was trading over 1 per cent weaker at 77.01 per dollar, provisionally, after touching

a previous life low of 76.96 earlier on Monday. On Friday, the currency fell to close at 76.17 against the US dollar, its lowest closing level since December 15, 2021. Increased flight to safety bets has pushed the dollar up, driven by intensifying geopolitical risks due to the RussiaUkraine conflict that pushed investors to safe-haven assets. Forex traders said escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine kept crude oil prices elevated and heightened worries about domestic inflation and broader trade deficits. “The Rupee hit an all-time low...as global markets continued to reel under selling pressure.

Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi Monday stressed that the friendship between Beijing and Moscow was still very strong, despite international condemnation of Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, as he said China was open to helping mediate peace. Beijing has walked a tight diplomatic tightrope throughout the crisis, refusing to condemn its close ally Moscow after only last month touting a “no limits” strategic partnership between the two countries. “The friendship between the two peoples is rock-solid, and both sides’ future cooperation prospects are very vast,” said Wang at an annual press briefing.

He said Warne’s family had been informed of the result and accepted it. “Investigators will conclude the autopsy reports and send them to state prosecutor as soon as possible,” Krissana added. Warne’s unexpected death aged 52 sparked an outpouring of grief from prime ministers, rock stars and fellow athletes.

How artificial pancreas can be a game changer for diabetes patients

T

“The cost of treating diabetes is similar to treating heart attacks, kidney disease, strokes, neuropathy, blindness, amputations, mental disease -- all of which can be prevented with ‘proper management of the primary disease’,” said Dr Jothydev Kesavadev, diabetologist

he World Health Organization (WHO) describes diabetes as a chronic, metabolic disease characterised by elevated levels of blood glucose (or blood sugar), which, over time, can lead to serious damage to the heart, blood vessels, eyes, kidneys and nerves. It also states that about 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, with majority living in low-and middle-income countries, and that 1.5 million deaths directly are attributed to diabetes each year. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin, whereas in Type 2 diabetes, the body develops insulin resistance, leading to abnormally high blood sugar levels. As such, many diabetes patients‘ lives depend on insulin treatment that can be administered through injections or pumps to keep their blood glucose levels under control. But, a new technology — Automated Insulin Delivery — is looking to mimic the role of the pancreas, heralding the way for game-changing methods to manage diabetes and its many manifestations. Also called Artificial Pancreas (AP) or closed-loop systems, the technology combines diabetes devices, namely an insulin pump connected to a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), and a smartphone program. While insulin pumps have been in use since the 1980s to mimic the secretion from a healthy pancreas for patients with type 1 diabetes, “these need to be carried out manually multiple times daily and hence did not meet expectations”, said Dr Jothydev Kesavadev, diabetologist and MD of Jothydev’s Diabetes Research Centres, Trivandrum. But, artificial pancreas automatically monitors the blood glucose level, calculates the amount of insulin needed at different points during the day, and delivers it. This system helps control blood glucose levels making it easier for people to keep it in range.

I Why Cuff Size Is So Important for Your Blood Pressure Reading Researchers report that an incorrect cuff size on blood pressure monitoring devices can provide inaccurate readings. The issue can affect people who get their blood pressure checked at a doctor’s office as well as someone who takes their own readings at home.

World Obesity Day 2022

Lifestyle changes to prevent and manage obesity

“Lifestyle modifications for obese, overweight, or people with comorbid conditions include 3 major components - diet, exercise, and behaviour therapy.”

O

besity is one of the biggest health crises in the world, affecting 800 million people with millions more at risk, according to worldobesity.org. To spread awareness about the same and encourage action towards its elimination, World Obesity Day is observed every year on March 4. This year, the day will be celebrated with the theme ‘Everybody Needs to Act’. The 2022 campaign is the third unified World Obesity Day when world obesity members and allies come together to call for change. Last year, the day was observed with the theme, ‘Everybody Needs Everybody’,’ which was a huge success, reaching hundreds of millions of people around the world. According to the World Health Organisation, obesity rates have nearly tripled since 1975 and have seen a significant increase of almost five times in children and adolescents. It is affecting people of all ages from all social groups, in both developed and developing countries. Lifestyle changes to prevent and treat obesity According to Dr Sanjay Khare, head, bariatric medicine, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, “Lifestyle modifications for obese (BMI > 30 kg/m2), overweight (BMI 26 to 29 kg/m2), or people with comorbid conditions (diabetes, hypertension, OA, IHD etc.), include 3 major components, diet, exercise, and behaviour therapy.” Dietary interventions Stay away from crash or fad diets as they cannot produce long-term results. “Eating smaller portions, having verylow-calorie diets, and trying various combinations of foods are some of the mechanisms that can help you in weight loss.” Agreed Yash Vardhan Swami, health and fitness educator, who said, “Controlling diet doesn’t mean you have to give up on rice, gluten and other food items as long as we are eating lesser calories than we are burning.” Physical activity Experts stressed the need for physical activity to achieve desired weight control target. “Weight control can be achieved with multiple short bouts (even for 10 minutes) of physical activity throughout the day. You should also gradually increase the time and intensity of exercises to gain strength and endurance over time,” Dr Khare said.

f you think one-size-fits-all doesn’t work very well in clothing, scientists want you to know that it doesn’t work when it comes to your blood pressure readings. They say a wrong cuff size could get you a false reading. That means your doctor might prescribe too much or too little medication for you. It could also mean your high blood pressure goes untreated. That’s the preliminary conclusion of a new studyTrusted Source released March 1 during the American Heart Association’s Epidemiology, Prevention, Lifestyle & Cardiometabolic Health Conference 2022 in Chicago. The information could be important for millions of people, especially those who take their blood pressure readings at home. A 2017 studyTrusted Source found that nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure (hypertension). That’s defined by the top or systolic number being 130 mm Hg or greater and the diastolic or bottom number being 80 mm Hg or higher. In addition, in 2019, more than half a million deaths in the United States had hypertension as a primary or contributing cause.

Getting the right reading

The American Heart Association recommends using a tape measure around the bicep at mid-arm to get the right measurements. Then compare those numbers against their chart to find what size cuff you should be using. 10 tips to get a more accurate reading: • Use the right size cuff. • Don’t put the cuff over your clothing. • Relax for 3 to 5 minutes before taking your reading. • Sit in a comfortable chair. Don’t dangle your feet, be sure to uncross your legs, and make sure your back and arm are supported. • Try not to be tense or stressed. • Don’t talk during your reading. • Don’t smoke for at least 30 minutes before. • Avoid alcohol and caffeine for at least 30 minutes before. • Don’t sit in a cold room. Being in the cold could increase your blood pressure reading. • Go to the bathroom before. A full bladder increases your blood pressure.

aptops need replacing every few years owing to wear and tear or damage. Unless you’re craving for a newer model, fancier hardware, latest features, or just any excuse for a better laptop, the good news is that you can actually do some things to extend the lifespan of your laptop. Read on for more!

Clean Routinely

With the keyboard and fan, your laptop is nothing short of a dirt magnet. Turn the laptop off and brush it clean, going slowly and gently over the fan and nooks and crannies. Avoid eating around your laptop to avoid crumbs from getting into the keyboard. Turn the laptop upside down and tap gently to dislodge any dirt and food particles stuck between the keys. Now clean the keyboard by going over the keys with a soft cloth. You can consider using cleaning slime for the spaces between the laptop keys to pick up debris. Note that keeping your laptop clean will prevent it from overheating, this increasing lifespan.

Moisturise Your Feet Well

There will be less friction as you move and you will not get blisters and burns.

Get Your Foot Size Right

Getting the foot size right is really important. Before buying a pair, ask the person helping you in the store to tell you the right foot size. Also, foot size changes, and not just while you are growing up, but also when you are all grown up. Check it at least twice a year.

Pay Attention To The Shape Of Your Feet

Some of us have narrow feet, some have wide; some have smaller toes, while some might have long fingers.. There are so many variations. If you have wide feet, I would advise not to wear closed tapered shoes. Wear wide front closed ones or open toe ones. Even those with smaller toes should opt for closed wide front shoes. The pointed front shoes will pinch your toes and make it very uncomfortable. Unfortunately, besides taking them off after an hour or so, there will be no other solution.

Block Heels Or Platforms

Handle With Care

It goes without saying that you should be careful with your laptop and avoid dropping it. Your laptop screen is fragile, so make sure you don’t scratch or crack it. The hard drive is the other important component of your laptop; to make it last longer, move your laptop around gently and avoid moving it when the hard drive is carrying out intensive operations.

Tips To Wear High Heels Without Pain

Keep The Operating System In Good Shape

Speed up your laptop by running regular software and operating system updates. This will help patch issues, add new features, and reduce the chances of security exploitation. Keep junk and malware out with anti-virus and anti-malware programmes to ensure your system runs smoothly.

Upgrade The Hardware

It’s as simple as installing a bigger hard drive or using a Solid State Drive (SSD) in addition to internal storage. Adding more RAM and putting in a new display are other options.

Use Wisely

Leaving your laptop in direct sunlight or inside a hot car can shorten its lifespan. Keep your device in a cool place and you’re sure to see it go the distance. Also make sure you place the laptop on an even surface when using it to allow for sufficient air flow that will keep the device from heating up.

Block heels and platforms are way more comfortable than pointed heels. I know nothing can match up to pencil heels, but with the whole creativity boom happening in the design industry, you will find styles and shapes that would catch your fancy. They are as trendy as any!

Extra Cushions For Thin Soles

Shoes that have a thin sole, will cause pain at the bottom of your feet. Get a foot/cushion as that acts like a shock absorber. Rest your feet Take a little rest every now and then while wearing heels. Stretch your feet a little. Your feet will get the break it needs..

Shoes With More Support

Wearing heels with more top coverage or an ankle strap or both will be a lot more comfortable. It provides additional support to the feet.

Less than 24 hours before the counting of votes for the assembly elections. Mr Mann said that it won’t go into his head if he becomes the Chief Minister. “Fame has always been part of my life,” he said. The former comic was attacked by rival parties throughout the campaign with accusations of alcoholism and him allegedly being drunk in public, including in the parliament. “I will still go amidst people and work with them, for them. I don’t think my politics will mess my head if I become Chief Minister. Nothing is new for me,” he said. He also vowed to restore Punjab to its former glory. “My Punjab is a Punjab of dreams...People want the old Punjab back,” he said.

Russia warns to cut EU gas supply

The Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline was inaugurated just over a decade ago HiIndia Newsdesk

It is absolutely clear that a rejection of oil would lead to catastrophic consequences for the global market, says Deputy PM Russia has said it may close its main gas pipeline to Germany if the West goes ahead with a ban on Russian oil. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said a “rejection of Russian oil would lead to catastrophic consequences for the global market”, causing prices to more than double to $300 a barrel. The US has been exploring a potential ban with allies as a way of punishing Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. But Germany and the Netherlands rejected the plan on Monday. The EU gets about 40% of its gas and 30% of its oil from Russia, and has no easy substitutes if supplies are disrupted. In an address on Russian state television, Mr Novak said it would be “impossible to quickly find a replacement for Russian oil on the European market”.

In Uttar Pradesh, most pollsters barring two forecast that the ruling BJP may suffer losses but will still cross the halfway mark of 202 comfortably and retain power, bucking a trend of nearly four decades. The state has not returned a government to power since 1985. The SP-RLD alliance, which waged a spirited campaign, may make major gains as compared to 2017 but is likely to fall well short of the magic figure. The Congress, the polls predicted, would remain in single digits.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Monday expressed regret for refusing to call the late Shane Warne as the greatest of all time while discussing his legacy, saying it was not the right time for the comparisons he made. “In hindsight, that question should not have been asked and I should not have answered as it was not the right time for any comparison or evaluation,” Gavaskar posted on Instagram reacting to criticism of his statement. “Warne was one of the greatest players to ever grace the game. BJP Set To Retain UP, But With Fewer Seats, Says Poll Of Exit Polls

New Delhi: An aggregate of ten exit polls have predicted a second term for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, the country’s largest state seen as the gateway to power at the Centre. The BJP, the aggregate indicates, may win 240-plus of the state’s 403 assembly seats. Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party, seen as the big challenger to the BJP, may win 130-plus seats. Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party may win 10-plus and the Congress at the bottom of the tally with four seats.

As Goa Numbers Game Starts, Congress’ Feelers To AAP, Trinamool New Delhi: Two days before the state election results, the race for power in Goa is off to a flying start with big BJP meetings today after exit polls predicted no clear winner in the state. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is in Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and brief him about the party’s prospects of retaining power in Goa. Mr Sawant will later fly to Mumbai for a meeting with the BJP’s Goa in-charge, Devendra Fadnavis. Sources say the MGP and other parties have hinted that their support will come for a price - the Chief Minister’s post. The BJP may face the question of sacrificing Mr Sawant for the sake of numbers.
