The President replied “no” before being challenged, and then changed his reply: “Did you ask me whether I would tell ....? Oh, I think he is a war criminal.” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki later said the president had been speaking from his heart after seeing “barbaric” images of the violence in Ukraine, rather than making any official declaration. She noted that there was a separate legal process, run by the State Department, to determine war crimes - and that was ongoing separately.

Encourage Indian leaders to work closely with US to stand up against Putin’s invasion of Ukraine: White House

During a Congressional hearing last week, Admiral John Christopher Aquilino, Commander of US Indo-Pacific Command, described India as tremendous partners and said that the mil to mil relationship is probably at its highest point.
he United States remains in touch with Indian leaders and continues to encourage them to work closely with it to stand up against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the White House said Wednesday. “As you know, we remain in touch through a range of channels from our national security team with leaders in India and continue to encourage leaders to work closely with us to stand up against President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at her daily news conference. Over the past two weeks, the Biden administration has shown an understanding of India’s position on Russia given the complexity of its ties with Russia and overdependence on Moscow for military and security needs.
The US Federal Reserve is raising interest rates for the first time since 2018 in an attempt to bring fast-rising prices under control. HiIndia Newsdesk
The US central bank said it was lifting its benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage points and signalled plans for further rate rises in the months head. The moves come as the economy faces new uncertainty caused by the Ukraine war and coronavirus outbreaks in China. They are expected to have widespread global repercussions. By raising rates, the Fed will make it more expensive for households, businesses and governments to borrow. It is hoping that will cool demand for goods and services, helping to ease price inflation in the US, which hit a new 40-year high of 7.9% last month. “The plan is to restore price stability while also maintaining a strong labour market,” Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said. “That is our intention and we believe we can do that but we have to restore price stability.” “We’re not going to let high inflation become entrenched,” he said. “The costs of that would be too high.” The bank is trying to pull off a “highwire act” says Diane Swonk, chief economist at accounting firm Grant Thornton.

President Vladimir Putin
President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would achieve its goals in Ukraine and would not submit to what he called a Western attempt to achieve global dominance and dismember Russia. Putin said Russia was ready to discuss neutral status for Ukraine, three weeks into a war that has killed thousands of people and forced millions of Ukrainians to flee their homes. He said that what Russia calls its special military operation was “going to plan”.

In a televised speech to government ministers, Putin went further than before in acknowledging the pain that Western sanctions were inflicting on the economy, but insisted that Russia could withstand the blow. There was no sign of any softening in his bitter invective against the West and Ukraine. “In the foreseeable future, it was possible that the pro-Nazi regime in Kyiv could have got its hands on weapons of mass destruction, and its target, of course, would have been Russia,” Putin said.

He is scheduled to meet with leaders in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh for talks on energy, regional security and humanitarian relief
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson declared a mission to bui ld an international coalition against Russia and wean off dependence on its oil and gas exports in protest against the conflict with Ukraine, as he embarked on a visit to the Gulf region on Wednesday. Johnson is scheduled to meet with leaders in Abu Dhabi and Riyadh for talks on energy, regional security and humanitarian relief as part of what Downing Street described as the UK’s efforts to galvanise global action on the crisis in Ukraine. The leaders are expected to discuss efforts to improve energy security and reduce volatility in global energy and food prices amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis. “The brutal and unprovoked assault President Putin has unleashed on Ukraine will have far-reaching consequences for the world, well beyond Europe’s borders,” Johnson said ahead of his visit.

Russian forces dropped a bomb on a theatre where civilians were being sheltered in the besieged city of Mariupol, local officials say. Deputy Mayor Sergei Orlov told the BBC between 1,000 and 1,200 people had sought refuge in the building. The number of casualties was still unknown. Russia’s airstrikes and shells have previously hit a maternity hospital, a church and apartment towers. Local authorities say at least 2,400 people have been killed in Mariupol since the start of the war, although they acknowledge this is likely to be an underestimate.

New Delhi: The UN’s top court on Wednesday ordered Russia to suspend its invasion of Ukraine, saying it was “profoundly concerned” by Moscow’s use of force. “The Russian Federation shall immediately suspend military operations that it commenced on 24 February on the territory of Ukraine,” pending the final decision in the case, presiding judge Joan Donoghue told the International Court of Justice, or ICJ. “The court is profoundly concerned about the use of force by the Russian Federation which raises very serious issues in international law,” Justice Donoghue told a hearing in The Hague. Kyiv dragged Moscow to the UN’s top court days after Russia’s attack on February 24. India’s judge at the ICJ, Justice Dalveer Bhandari, also voted against Russia. The Congress on Wednesday said the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whom the Opposition party accused of always exploiting soldiers’ sacrifices for electoral gains, had betrayed troopers on the question of Orop (one-rank-one-pension). The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the Orop principle adopted by the Centre in its 2015 communication issued to the chiefs of the three defence forces, saying it neither suffers from any “constitutional infirmity” nor is it “arbitrary”. The top court’s verdict came on a plea filed by the Indian Ex-servicemen Movement through advocate Balaji Srinivasan against the Centre’s Orop formula. Recalling that the UPA government had accepted Orop on February 17, 2014, and executed it on April 1 that year, Surjewala said the entire detail had been decided.

Delhi Chief Minister and AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal and AAPs Chief Ministerial candidate Bhagwant Mann flash the victory sign, as the party heads to a landslide victory in Punjab Assembly elections.
Is AAP Set to Replace the Congress as India’s National Opposition? With a charismatic leader, an ‘alternative governance’ model and an understanding of electioneering in the online age, AAP seems geared to replace the Congress as India’s primary opposition.

landslide victory in Punjab has propelled the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from being a party ruling a ‘glorified municipality’ to becoming only the fifth Indian party to have succeeded in expanding beyond its state of origin and winning another state. The AAP now rules two states, as many as the Congress. With Congress staring at an existential crisis after the dismal electoral record of winning only five of the 50 state assemblies up for grabs since 2014 and being routed in two consecutive national elections, the success of the AAP in sweeping yet another state has made mainstream the

are five reasons why the party may well replace the Congress as India’s national opposition. The Indian state, despite its stability, has lagged in delivering economic growth and jobs, reducing hunger, malnutrition and poverty and has seemingly surrendered on providing healthcare and education, ensuring urban governance, gender parity and reduced social stratification, and the like. Such failures provide extraordinary scope for reforms that address these critical problems and thereby create new voter bases for a party. Yet, the existing parties, especially the Congress, failed to offer an alternative paradigm. As such, we, the people, settled for the familiar trope of being ‘too populous to be well governed’. A sense of hopeless status quo-ism and a lack of imagination pervaded our approach to most public policy problems. A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is hardly distinguishable The AAP wins another point against the Congress when comparing from a Congress government, the appeal of their leaders; Arvind Kejriwal versus Rahul Gandhi. especially in states, as famously Gandhi has not been in any position of governance and is unable quipped by the ever quotable Arun to inspire confidence in the voters regarding his ability to govern, Shourie. “The BJP is Congress plus whereas Kejriwal has been a chief minister thrice and has been recow,” he had said. elected on the basis of his governance record. This incumbency. This entitlement and makes him better placed to emerge as an opposition face behind complacency is why the Congress whom the public can unite and credibly challenge Modi. has no marketable model of governance for states, unlike the whispers that the AAP is the possible ‘national and AAP’s Delhi model and the BJP’s Gujarat model. natural replacement for the Congress’ . and increases the disposable incomes of common folk through innovations in welfarism; enhances opportunities for upliftment and dignified existence for the deprived through reformed public healthcare and education systems; improves services delivery through the use of technology and updated delivery structures, like the doorstep delivery of services and provisions for universal water supply and sewage network access. Through these steps, the party has astutely identified the unaddressed needs of voters, challenged itself to fulfil them and has thereby created a durable voter base that transcends old voter blocks. It is this durable base that explains why the AAP, after finding its feet in a state, sweeps it and may thus best the Congress in other states too.
Mastered ‘new-age electioneering’ In the contest for national opposition space, the AAP has another ace up its sleeve –its mastery of new age electioneering. The AAP has a domineering presence on various social media platforms; ostensibly has a better understanding of the search algorithms; has more passionate online volunteers; and has innovative multi-media messaging which allows it to disproportionately set the online – and thereafter, offline – narrative; a task the Congress often finds itself struggling at. In fact, the Congress, the original ‘godfather’ of welfare politics and the party behind India’s 1991 reforms, is unable to claim ownership for either when compared with the BJP due to the latter’s superior narrative building. With the loud AAP at its forefront, the opposition may finally find its voice, a proposition that should only endear the AAP to opposition voters more still.

Russia had made an “open offer” to India to sell crude oil at a discounted price
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki
Asked about a report on the possibility that India could take up the Russian offer of discounted crude oil, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said, “I don’t believe this would be violating that (sanctions).”
Speaking to the media this week, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had reportedly said Russia had made an “open offer” to India to sell crude oil at a discounted price, but that many factors would decide the government’s final decision, referring to transport routes, payment channels and insurance costs for the shipments. A decision to purchase more oil from Russia would also have to be weighed against the adverse reaction from India’s American and European partners who want to “isolate Russia” economically. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar had said last month that India does not follow “unilateral sanctions”, however, in 2019, India did bow to U.S. demands that it “zero out” all its oil imports from Iran.
of discounted crude oil, Ms Psaki said, “I don’t believe this would be violating that (sanctions).” “But also think about where you want to stand when history books are written at this moment in time. Support for the Russian leadership is support for an invasion that obviously is having a devastating impact,” Ms Psaki added. India has not supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine. New Delhi has consistently asked all stakeholders to resolve differences through dialogue. It has, however, abstained in all United Nations resolutions against Russia. Officials of the Biden administration have shown an understanding of India’s position and have told lawmakers that New Delhi has a major dependence on Russian military supplies for its national security. However, Indian-American Congressman Dr Ami Bera expressed disappointment over reports that India is contemplating buying Russian oil at a steeply discounted rate. “If reports are accurate and India makes this decision to buy Russian oil at a discounted price, New Delhi would be choosing to side with Vladimir Putin at a pivotal moment in history when countries across the world are united in support of the Ukrainian people and against Russia’s deadly invasion,” he said. “As the world’s largest democracy and as a leader of the Quad, India has a responsibility to ensure its actions do not directly or indirectly support Putin and his invasion,” Mr Bera said in a statement.
India should not be buying Russian oil: Congressman Ami Bera

he Chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives’ subcommittee for the Asian region and non-proliferation issues, Indian American Congressman Ami Bera, criticised India’s reported consideration of Russian oil purchases at a time when most countries in the world have taken a stand against Russia. He also expressed disappointment that India had abstained from condemning Russia at the United Nations. As the senior Indian American Member of Congress, I was deeply disappointed in India’s abstention from the United Nations
General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Despite India’s long history defending its own border from outside aggression, New Delhi has chosen to remain silent on Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of a free and sovereign country,” Mr. Bera said in a statement released on March 15. India was one of 35 countries that abstained during a March 2 U.N. General Assembly vote condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and asking Moscow to withdraw. The resolution had passed with a huge majority of 141 countries voting in favour of it.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar speaks in the Rajya Sabha during the second part of Budget Session of Parliament
iving a ‘suo-moto’ statement in Rajya Sabha on the situation in Ukraine, Mr. Jaishankar said at the start of “Operation Ganga”, about 4,000 students had flown out, but about 18,000 Indian citizens were caught in the conflict, when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched operations on February 24. “Despite our efforts, a large majority of students elected to continue staying in Ukraine,” Mr. Jaishankar told the House. “Some universities actively discouraged and showed reluctance to offer on-line studies… The political signals were confusing as well. Public urgings not to be taken in by alarmism and reports of force withdrawals created a confusing picture,” he added, quoting from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s speech that told people not to panic and leave. The Minister detailed the government’s actions under “Operation Ganga”, including setting up a 100-personnel
control centre to take calls and organize assistance for Indians, stating that 47 MEA officials were dispatched to the region to help with travel facilities, and 90 flights were operated, including 76 civilian aircraft and 14 Indian air force flights to bring Indians along with about 150 nations of 18 other countries back. However, Mr. Jaishankar did not answer a number of other questions on specifics of how the government proposes to help returning students with their incomplete education, telling the House that the government will “address the issue with full responsibility”. To a specific question from the Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Sushmita Dev about whether the four advisories issued by the government between February 15 and 22 were merely “precautionary” and didn’t carry sufficient urgency for the students, Mr. Jaishankar said any advisory is taken “seriously”.

ours after the Karnataka High Court delivered its 129-page judgment, a Muslim student from the state approached the Supreme Court against the order, saying it had “failed to note that the right to wear a hijab comes under the ambit of ‘expression’ and is thus protected under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution”. The student, Niba Naaz, said in her plea that the right to wear a hijab is also protected by right to conscience under Article 25 of the Constitution, which is an individual right, and that the ‘Essential Religious Practices Test’ ought not to have been applied by the High Court. Stating that wearing the hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam and freedom of religion under Article 25

Hailing the order, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders on Tuesday said the verdict should be seen in the context of women empowerment without politicising the issue. Religion has been at the centre of human societal existence since time immemorial. Religion is, and has always been, an indispensable and ineffaceable part of our lives. The Karnataka High Court’s much-awaited judgment on hijab has upheld the state government’s circular of February 5. The 129-page judgment is on the expected lines with the three-judge full bench headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi discussing at length the doctrine of essentiality and how hijab is not an essential religious practice of Islam, and, therefore, concluding that the petitioners’ arguments against hijab are liable to rejection.

That’s an actor’s drawback and a producer’s cash cow. This guy does good action? Take him repeatedly. He is good at this? he resolution adopted by the Congress Working C ommittee has surprised many leaders in the party who see the “language and contents” as an unequivocal endorsement of the G-23 position. The resolution said: “The CWC unanimously reaffirms its faith in the leadership of Sonia Gandhi and requests the Congress president to lead from the front, address the organisational weaknesses, effect necessar y & comprehensive organisational changes in order to take on the political challenges.” This was the theme of the letter written by G-23, the group of 23 leaders, to Sonia Gandhi last year. While their stance was
viewed as a rebellion, they feel vindicated now. One leader told: “The CWC has formally requested Sonia Gandhi to lead from the front. Doesn’t that mean she wasn’t so far leading from the front? What else is the purpose of requesting somebody who is the Congress president to lead from the front?” However, the resolution asking Sonia to lead from the front came after she had, in her introductory remarks, offered to step back and can be seen as a response to that offer. The CWC also asked the Congress president “to address the organisational weaknesses, effect necessary & comprehensive organisational changes in order to take on the political challenges”. This is what the G-23 said, pointing out the organisational weaknesses and calling for remedial measures. Even on Sunday, both Ghulam Nabi Azad and Anand Sharma, two key members of the group, insisted that the organisation required changes, decision-making should be institutionalised and the principle of accountability be honoured. Amused by the language of the CWC resolution, one office-bearer said: “Was it drafted by Azad? Or Sharma? Or Kapil Sibal? If not, why were they condemned and sidelined?”

In Uttar Pradesh, we have 2.33% percent of the vote share. This doesn’t surprise me. We are unable to connect with the electorate. We are unable to lead from the front, unable to reach out to people. Our accessibility is the subject matter of public debate. As Ghulam Nabi Azad said yesterday a leader must have the attributes of accessibility, accountability and acceptability. Ever since 2014, there is absence of accountability, decreasing acceptability and little attempt to increase accessibility. That’s the real problem. So the

I will remain in my thoughts and actions a true Congressman but I cannot see the Congress decline and lose its glory in this fashion because people are not willing to listen. It is purely my personal view that today at least I want a ‘sab ki Congress’. Some others want a ‘Ghar ki Congress’. I certainly don’t want a ‘Ghar ki Congress’. And I will fight for a ‘sab ki Congress’ till my last breath. This ‘sab ki Congress’ means just not getting together, but getting together all those people in India who don’t want the BJP.

Now, students from families that make up to $80,000 may also be getting a deep discount on county college costs. The st ate’s C ommunity C ol lege Opportunity Grant program would guarantee students whose households earn between $65,001 and $80,000 will pay no more than 50% of tuition and fees at New Jersey’s county colleges under an expansion of the program proposed in the state’s budget plan.
The expansion of the Community College Opportunity Grant program is part of the $48.9 billion state budget Gov. Phil Murphy introduced last week. The Democratic-controlled state Legislature is expected to negotiate the final budget with Murphy’s administration before the governor signs the spending plan into law at the end of June. To qualify for the 50% tuition guarantee, students will have to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA. Undocumented immigrants living in the country illegally can also qualify for the program by filling out the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application created for “Dreamers” who are not eligible for federal aid. Officials will use the student’s total household adjusted gross income, a number usually found on tax forms, to determine if the family falls into the $65,001 to $80,000 income range. If they do, the student will be guaranteed to pay 50% of the county college tuition and fees, or possibly less if they qualify for other student aid.

Fuel Thieves Steal More Than 1,000 Gallons Of Diesel From Gas Station In Houston HiIndia Newsdesk
HOUSTON, TX – Houston police are looking for thieves responsible for stealing more than 1,000 gallons of fuel from a local gas station. For three straight days, investigators believe burglars stole roughly 350 gallons of diesel from the Fuqua Express in Southeast Houston. In total, roughly 1,100 gallons of fuel were taken. Fuel thieves targeting gas stations, stealing dozens of gallons Police believe the burglars are using an elaborate method to take the fuel. On surveillance video, a lookout car can be seen at nearby gas pump. Then, a van parks over the station’s gas caps designed to store fuel underground. Using a trap door, some sort of suction
device, and a storage unit, investigators believe the thieves were able to quietly
pump hundreds of gallons of diesel into their vehicle. All three incidents took
place in broad daylight. The gas station is locally owned and operated by Jerry Thayil’s father. He estimates the stolen diesel to be worth more than $5,000. On a fourth straight day last week, Thayil says the same group comes back to try another fuel burglary. However, Thayil had been watching surveillance video. Authorities are looking for at least four vehicles associated with the fuel thefts. If you have any information you’re urged to contact police. “This stuff is happening right now,” said Thayil. “Make sure you’re checking your inventory logs and your surveillance cameras. It can happen when you least expect it.”

HEALTH
XENOTRANSPLANTATION:
ARE PIGS THE FUTURE OF ORGAN TRANSPLANTS? The frontiers of organ transplantation have been pushed further than ever before. The first organs taken from genetically engineered pigs have been put into people and the recipient of the first pig heart managed to survive for two months. So how close are we to using pigs for a limitless supply of organs to solve the global shortage? SILENCE descends on the operating theatre and the tension builds until it’s almost a physical presence in the room. Surgeons have just connected a pig’s kidney to a human body. The clamps have been released and human blood is now flowing into the pig organ. “You could have heard a pin drop,” says transplant surgeon Dr Jayme Locke. Success or failure will be determined in moments and there is now just a single question on everyone’s minds: “Pink or black?” If the body unleashes a horrendous assault on the foreign organ - holes will be ripped in every cell in the pig tissue and the organ will clot from the inside out. It will go splotchy, then blue, then completely black within minutes. If “hyperacute rejection” is avoided, the organ will blush pink with the flow of blood and oxygen. “It turned beautiful and pink... the sense of relief, the sense of joy and hope just filled the room. We might have high-fived as well,” said Dr Locke, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, in the US. This operation was just one of a series of medical breakthroughs that have renewed interest in the field of xenotransplantation. Using animal organs in the human body is an old idea, and has ranged from “zest for life” chimpanzee testicle implants to replacement kidneys and hearts taken from our primate relatives. The latter often ended in death soon afterwards. The problem is, our immune system treats the transplanted organ like an infection and attacks. The focus these days is on pigs, as their organs are roughly the right size and we have centuries of experience farming them. But the challenge of hyperacute rejection - keeping organs pink, not black - is the same. You can’t just pop down to the farm, choose a pig and transplant its organs. It’s taken huge advances in genetic engineering to alter pigs’ DNA so their organs are more compatible with our immune systems. The recent kidney and heart transplants have taken organs from the specially designed “10-gene pig”. It has one genetic tweak to prevent any donated organs responding to human growth hormones and growing out of control. Another key alteration removes a sugary molecule, called alpha-Gal, which sticks to the surface of pig cells and acts like a gigantic flashing neon sign marking the tissue as absolutely alien. A wing of our immune system, called the complement system, is constantly patrolling the body looking for alpha-Gal. That’s why organs can be rejected and killed
moments after they are transplanted. Two other “neon signs” were genetically removed and six human ones added in, acting like a camouflage net over the pig cells to help hide them from the immune system. The resulting 10-gene pigs are then raised in sterile conditions so they are suitable for transplant. Pig hearts do not have to be as good as a human heart to still save huge numbers of lives, according to Prof John Wallwork, one of the UK’s most eminent transplant surgeons. Many people die waiting for a transplant. Xenotransplantation has always felt like the next big thing in transplant medicine. There’s no doubt a series of landmark operations have been performed, but only more research will tell us whether the field - and its grand dreams - will ever come of age. Dr Locke added: “Our goal would be to have one 10-gene edited pig be able to save a patient with kidney failure, a patient with liver failure, a patient with heart failure and a patient with end-stage lung disease. “That would be a remarkable accomplishment and I genuinely believe that we will be there during my lifetime.”
3D printing: Ears and noses to be created using human cells Patients in Wales could be among the first in the world to receive pioneering treatment which uses human cells to eliminate facial scarring.
SWANSEA University’s £2.5m study will use the cells and plant-based materials to 3D-print nose and ear cartilage. If successful, it could be used in the future to treat people born without body parts or who have facial scarring because of burns, trauma or cancer. Victims of scarring say the development could be life-changing. Six-year-old Elizabeth visited the world-leading research programme in Swansea alongside Sophie, Countess of Wessex, who is a patron of the Scar Free Foundation. Elizabeth, from Birmingham, suffered severe burns in a fire when she was six months old. She lost some of her fingers and an ear, and her painful scarring requires daily treatment. “Sometimes I find it hard to open things,” she said, adding she found the new research “exciting”.
Her father Liam said the work being done was “incredible”. He said: “The 3D printing we’re particularly interested in. Elizabeth lost an ear in the fire, so if one was eventually able to be printed using her own cells that would be amazing. “A lot of the work they’re doing in this lab we’re hoping will benefit children like Elizabeth so they don’t have to deal with the physical and mental impact of scars.” Tina Morgan, from Merthyr Tydfil, was diagnosed with skin cancer on her left ear in 2010. Surgery to remove the cancer was successful, but it meant she only has the lobe remaining. Currently, nose and ear rebuilding is done by carving parts of the rib and inserting it under the skin, but this can be painful and lead to scarring. Mrs Morgan said she would like to have something to replace the part of the ear she lost, and has previously looked at treatment to reconstruct her ear. The research is being led by Prof Iain Whitaker, who said this was the largest group of its kind in the UK, and possibly Europe. The project will include scientific stu d i e s to d e te r m i ne t he i d e a l combination of cells to grow new cartilage which will lead to human clinical trials for facial reconstruction.

UNCONVENTIONAL LEHENGA STYLES RIGHT AWAY
INDIAN weddings have long had a reputation for being big affairs. Everything from the venue to the wedding lehengas are expected to be elaborate and grand. We’ve noticed that lately, there has (thankfully!) been an apparent shift from this idea. Call it the pandemic effect if you want to, but many brides these days are gravitating towards a minimal and fresh approach when it comes to their wedding outfits. They are moving away from the quintessential hundred-kilo lehenga and opting for fresh and modern lehengas, and we love it. So, if you’re a bride-to-be looking for unconventional outfit ideas, go ahead and bookmark these offbeat lehenga styles right away.
Knotted Top Lehengas
Looking for ways to style your bookshelf? BIBLIOPHILES will vouch for the fact that setting up book shelves is an arduous task, especially if they do not have a dedicated space or even the vision to set it up. As such, many books lie in chaotic conditions, unattended, waiting to be seen, read and arranged. 4First begins by leaving “space between stacks of books to display mementos”. 4Next, adds candles and artefacts as bookends. 4The next step is to try and arrange the books in groups by using colour or size. 4You can try to “create interest by crafting horizontal and vertical stacks”, as demonstrated in the video. 4You can add beautiful pieces on top of your stacked books. 4If you have some space, you can place plants and flowers to “add softness and break symmetrical lines”. 4 You can also try and “introduce texture with baskets and ceramics”. 4“Keep making adjustments till it feels right,” she writes in the caption. 4Think in terms of layering. 4Add some “wonderful art”.
KNOTTED top lehengas are all the rage right now and for all the right reasons. “Knotted top lehengas are nothing but a blouse featuring a knot worn with a lehenga skirt, and without a dupatta. They are perfect for brides who want to enjoy their special day without worrying too much about their outfits. If you need more reasons to opt for this charming style, let us tell you that it’s incredibly easy to play around with this particular style of lehenga. Take, for instance, this delicious organza knotted top-style blouse in a shade of dust pink and golden embroidered lehenga skirt set. All you’d need are statement earrings and a stone-cut bracelet, and you’d be all set for one of the most special days of your life.
How you can add
ROMANESCO BROCCOLI
to your plate
This is the perfect time to experiment with a variety of fresh produce. From fruits to vegetables, try making everything from roasts, stir-fries and curries and share the deliciousness with friends and family. The humble green, also known as “Roman cauliflower, broccolo romanesco, romanesque cauliflower or simply romanesco, is an edible flower bud of the species Brassica oleracea.” Explaining the origin of this power packed vegetable, the chef said, “First documented in Italy in the 16th century, it is chartreuse in color, and has a form naturally approximating a fractal.”
This vegetable can be compared to a traditional cauliflower in terms of taste. However, it has a firmer texture and delicate nutty flavour. To replicate the taste, the chef suggested that you imagine the combination of cauliflowers together with walnuts: a balance of smooth, nutty taste. “Think cauliflower and walnuts or chestnuts together.” Romanesco is a rich source of
vitamin C, vitamin K, dietary fiber, and carotenoids which will make sure that it’s a healthy addition to your diet. This vegetable is to be enjoyed during the cooler months as a “veggie side dish for any roasted or grilled meat and poultry main course”. Due to the delicate taste of the Romanesco, it’s important that you cook it gently to retain maximum
flavour. The use of freshly cracked black pepper and a dash of lemon is recommended to amp up the taste of Romanesco. The chef simply cooks it and flavours it with “just a little garlic, chillies, pepper, and lemon.” The addition of Romanesco could be a game-changer. Rich in essential vitamins and dietary fibre, roast it, bake it, fry it, let us know how you liked it!

Karnataka Continuous effort Hijab Ban Stays to bury truth
Court Says Not Essential Religious Practice
On ‘The Kashmir Files’ row, PM Modi talks about HiIndia Newsdesk
A HiIndia Newsdesk
Bengaluru: A hijab is not an essential religious practice, the Karnataka High Court said today in a huge setback to students who had challenged a ban on wearing the hijab in class. Five petitions had challenged the ban in court. Ahead of the order, the state government banned large gatherings for a week in state capital Bengaluru “to maintain public peace and order”. Mangalore too banned large gatherings from March 15 to 19. Schools and colleges are closed in Udupi today. The Karnataka High Court had temporarily banned religious clothes, including Hijab and saffron scarves, last month as the controversy snowballed into protests and a face-off between different sections of students.
China: Businesses shut as officials widen Covid lockdowns
midst a row over the recently-related film The Kashmir Files, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday slammed the “ecosystem that is involved in burying the truths” and urged the Bharatiya Janata Party’s lawmakers to stand up for those who “bring out the truths and facts that have been suppressed for years.” Modi also took a swipe on those who were against the release of The Kashmir Files. “Some people speak about the freedom of expression, but no film was made on Emergency because there was continuous effort to bury the truth,” the PM said. “When on August 24 (the day of Partition), we decided to mark it as a horror day, some people had issues with that… But how can the country forget that day? But by doing so we would have been able to learn about it,” he said.

Several multinational companies have halted operations as China widens its Covid lockdowns among its biggest since the start of the pandemic. Tens of millions of people across the country face restrictions, including the entire Jilin province and technology hub Shenzhen, as authorities report record numbers of cases. Toyota, Volkswagen and Apple supplier Foxconn are among the firms affected. The lockdowns have raised concerns that crucial supply chains may be disrupted. China on Tuesday reported a record high of more than 5,000 cases, most of it in Jilin. All 24 million residents of the northeastern province were placed under quarantine orders on Monday. It is the first time China has restricted an entire province since the Wuhan and Hebei lockdown at the beginning of the pandemic. Jilin residents have been banned from moving around, and anyone wanting to leave the province must apply for police permission. It came a day after a five-day lockdown was placed on the 12.5 million residents of the southern city of Shenzhen, with all buses and subway services suspended.
New Delhi: The Indian government today informed the parliament that a formal “high-level inquiry” has been ordered into the March 9 incident of the “inadvertent” release of a missile from India into Pakistan’s territory. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said that the accident happened during routine maintenance and inspection at around 7 pm. Stressing that the
government attached “highest priority” to the safety and security of weapons systems, he assured the house that the missile system is “very reliable and safe”. “It was later learnt that the missile had landed inside the territory of Pakistan. While this incident is regretted, we are relieved that nobody was hurt due to the accident,” he said.
‘Rebel’ Kapil Sibal Slams Gandhis HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: The infighting in the Congress continued after the Congress Working Committee meet, with the party’s Lok Sabha whip Manickam Tagore today hitting out at senior leader Kapil Sibal for his remarks against the leadership and accusing him of speaking the language of the RSS and BJP. Mr Tagore, a staunch Rahul Gandhi loyalist, said the RSS and the BJP want the Gandhis to be out of leadership position in the party in order to kill the Congress party and destroy the ‘idea of India’. “Why the RSS and BJP wants Nehru-Gandhi’s out of the leadership? Because without Gandhi’s leadership Congress will be become Janata party. It’s easy to kill Congress then it’s easy to destroy the idea of India (sic),” Mr Tagore said on Twitter. “Kapil Sibal knows it but why he is speaking the language of RSS/BJP,” he claimed. The Congress Working Committee also rejected Mrs Gandhi’s offer to make any and every sacrifice for the party, which was construed by some as an offer of Gandhi family to step aside, and reposed faith in her leadership.

New Delhi: Talks between Amazon. com Inc and Future Retail aimed at resolving a long-running dispute over whether Future’s retail assets can be sold to Reliance Industries (RIL) have
failed, lawyers for the companies told the Supreme Court on Tuesday. Both Amazon and Future said they would like to resume arbitration proceedings in Singapore that had been put on hold by the Delhi High Court. The top court will hear the matter on Wednesday. Amazon has also accused Future Retail and RIL of “fraud”. In a notice published in the newspapers, Amazon warned the founders of Future Retail that any effort to transfer its assets to RIL would be liable for civil and criminal consequences.

The United States has said there is no indication that the recent firing of a missile from India which landed in Pakistan was anything other than accidental. India on Friday said it accidentally fired a missile two days back that landed in Pakistan and that the “deeply regrettable” incident was caused by a technical malfunction in the course of its routine maintenance. “We have no indication as you also heard from our Indian partners that this incident was anything other than an accident,” State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at his daily news conference on Monday. pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday had said Pakistan could have responded to India after its missile landed in his country’s Punjab province but it observed restraint.

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi, in her speech to senior leaders yesterday at a meeting to discuss the party’s latest election defeats, offered to resign along with her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Five Indian students died in a road accident near Toronto in Canada at 3.45 am local time on Saturday. Two other students were injured and have been admitted to a hospital for treatment. According to Canadian news channel CP24, the passenger van in which the students were travelling collided with a tractor-trailer on a highway in Ontario.
The deceased have been identified as Harpreet Singh, Jaspinder Singh, Karanpal Singh, Mohit Chouhan and Pawan Kumar. They were all between 21 and 24 years old. Chitra Ramkrishna was arrested by CBI earlier this month after four days of questioning. HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: Former NSE chief Chitra Ramkrishna, accused of being involved in grave lapses at India’s largest stock market -- including sharing confidential information with an individual she dubbed a “Himalayan yogi” -- has been sent to jail for 14 days. The 59-year-old, who has been heading the NSE since 2013, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation on February 24 after days of questioning in what has been dubbed the market manipulation scam. The case -- involving an unfair advantage in trading to some brokers -- was filed in 2018. The agency is investigating allegations of information leak from the computer servers of the market exchanges to stockbrokers in what has come to be known as the “colocation scam”.
