US expands travel bans on Chinese officials for persecution

HiIndia Newsdesk

Florida governor Ron DeSantis has signed a proclamation recognising runner-up Emma Weyant as the winner of the highest US national college swimming title - an event she lost to transgender athlete Lia Thomas.

The Biden administration on Monday expanded existing US travel bans against Chinese officials whom it accuses of repressing ethnic and religious minorities. The State Department said it is barring those targeted from traveling to the United States due to their involvement in crackdowns on freedom of speech and religion in China and abroad. The department did not identify which officials would be subject to the expanded ban nor say how many would be affected.

Last week Thomas became the first known transgender athlete to win the title. She took victory in the women’s 500-yard freestyle in Atlanta. But on Tuesday Republican governor DeSantis said the result “undermined the integrity of the competition”. Thomas, who swims for the University of Pennsylvania, secured the title in four minutes 33.24 seconds in Atlanta. Weyant, of Sarasota, Florida, who won 400m individual

medley silver at the Tokyo Olympics, finished 1.75secs behind in second. DeSantis criticised the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for allowing Thomas to compete. He said: “The NCAA is basically taking ef for ts to destroy women’s athletics, they’re trying to undermine the integrity of the competition and they’re crowning somebo dy else the women’s champion and we think that’s wrong.

Her death from cancer was confirmed by her family in a statement. “She was surrounded by family and friends,” the statement said. “We lost a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.” Among those to pay tribute to her after the announcement of her death were former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton, who later followed in her footsteps as Secretary of State. “Few leaders have been so perfectly suited for the times in which they served,” the Clintons said. “Because she knew first-hand that America’s policy decisions had the power to make a difference in people’s lives around the world, she saw her jobs as both an obligation and an opportunity.”Nato’s current Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, said after the announcement that Albright “was a force for freedom” and an “outspoken champion of Nato”.

ederal judge Ketanji Brown Jackson faced down a barrage of Republican questioning Wednesday about her sentencing of criminal defendants, as her history-making bid to join the Supreme Court veered from lofty constitutional questions to attacks on her motivations on the bench. In her final day of Senate questioning, she declared she would rule “without any agendas” as the high court’s first Black female justice and rejected Republican

efforts to paint her as soft on crime in her decade on the federal bench. On Thursday, the final of four days of hearings, legal experts on both sides will weigh in. Though her approval seems all but sure — Democrats are aiming for a vote before Easter — Republicans kept trying to chip away at her record on Wednesday. But the GOP criticism was punctuated with effusive praise from Democrats, and by reflections on the historic nature of her nomination — none more riveting in the room than from New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, who used his time not to ask questions but to tearfully speak and draw tears from Jackson as well.

President Joe Biden chose Jackson in February, fulfilling a campaign pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court.

Ukraine invasion: Dissent brews over Vladimir Putin’s leadership HiIndia Newsdesk

The failures of the Russian President’s campaign are apparent in the striking number of senior military commanders believed to be killed in the fighting

Zelensky calls for global protests

In January, the head of a group of serving and retired Russian military officers declared that invading Ukraine would be “pointless and extremely dangerous”. It would kill thousands, he said, make Russians and Ukrainians enemies for life, risk a war with Nato and threaten “the existence of Russia itself as a state”. To many Russians, that seemed like a far-fetched scenario, since few imagined that an invasion of Ukraine was really possible. But two months later, as Russia’s advance stalls in Ukraine, the prophecy looms large. Reached by phone this week, the retired general who authored the declaration, Leonid Ivashov, said he stood by it. In Russia, the slow going and the heavy

toll of President Vladimir V. Putin’s war on Ukraine are setting off questions about his military’s planning capability, his confidence in his top spies and loyal defence minister, and the quality of the intelligence that reaches him. It also shows the pitfalls of Putin’s top-down governance, in which officials and military officers have little leeway to make their own decisions and adapt to developments in real time. The failures of Putin’s campaign are apparent in the striking number of senior military commanders believed to have been killed in the fighting. Ukraine says it has killed at least six Russian generals, while Russia acknowledges one of their deaths, along with that of the deputy commander of its Black Sea fleet.

Australia announces new ‘Space Command’ defence agency

Recovery teams have found human remains at the crash site of the China Eastern jet which plunged into mountains this week, say state media. Authorities have yet to declare the number of victims, but there has been no sign so far that any of the 132 people onboard had survived. Investigators still do not know why the plane suddenly entered a near-vertical dive in southern China on Monday. But the recovery of the intact cockpit voice recorder is hoped to shed clues.

the only way forward, a Downing Street spokesperson said in a readout of their conversation. The leaders discussed the grave situation in Ukraine, and the Prime Minister said he believed the actions of Putin’s regime were deeply disturbing and disastrous for the world, the official said. The pair agreed that Ukraine’s integrity and territorial sovereignty must be respected. Russia needed to adhere to the UN Charter, the leaders said, and both agreed that respect for international law was the only way to ensure global peace and prosperity, the spokesperson said.

Australia has unveiled a defence agency focused on space, designed to counter Russia and China’s ambitions.

Defence Minister Peter Dutton said the Defence Space Command would secure Australia’s place in the cosmos. Air Vice-Marshal Cath Roberts, who will lead it, said she was “scared” by Australia’s inability to combat Beijing and Moscow’s activities. The US, Russia and China are all believed to have tested weapons that could destroy a satellite in space. The agency’s chief said a Chinese satellite could theoretically “take out” the National Broadband Network for regional Australia.

One ‘black box’ found in China Eastern plane crash China says one of two black boxes from the China Eastern plane crash was found in severely damaged condition. The recorder is so damaged that they are not able to tell whether it is the flight data recorder or the cockpit voice recorder. Mao Yanfeng, the director of the accident investigation division of the Civil Aviation Authority of China, told a news conference Wednesday that an all-out effort is being made to find the other black box.

Beijing: Beijing on Wednesday described Russia as an “important member” of the G20 after Washington raised the prospect of excluding Moscow from the group.

China has provided a level of diplomatic protection to Russia, which is increasingly isolated over its invasion of Ukraine, with its economy tied up by sanctions. “The G20 is the main forum for international economic cooperation,” Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters. “Russia is an important member, and no member has the right to expel another country.”

Leaders of the two countries declared a relationship of “no limits” following a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Beijing for the Winter Olympics. ikander Kher will grace India’s Got Talent‘s Rishtey Special episode. This marks his first time sharing the screen space with his mother Kirron Kher, who is one of the judges on the reality show. In a promo of the episode, Kirron expressed that she is happy for her son as he has been doing some good work. However, she only has one demand from him – she wants a daughter-in-law. “Today, I am happy that Sikander is sitting next to me. Glad to see that he is doing some good work. But only one thing is missing, I want a daughter-in-law,” Kirron Kher said in Hindi. As soon as she finished her sentence, an embarassed Sikander was trying to escape the episode. As the video progressed, Badshah asked Sikander if he has been ever scolded by Kirron Kher. Sikander, looking at Kirron, revealed that he was extremely naughty growing up.

n his latest Netflix series, Rahul Bose plays a father to a confused teenager eager for love but as he looks back, the actor says he was sure even as a young boy that he desires “beautiful relationships” but never marriage. Bose, star of acclaimed films like Mr and Mrs Iyer, The Japanese Wife, Jhankaar Beats, currently features on the young adult series Eternally Confused and Eager for Love. When asked if there was ever a phase where he was eager for love, the actor, who has been fiercely guarded about his private life, quipped, “I am so eager for love, I can’t tell you. Can somebody please? I am very eager. I have many qualities but eagerness is a big quality of mine.” The 54-year-old actor, however, said that he has operated with remarkable clarity when it comes to getting married- it was never on the cards. “At the age of 18, I said I will never get married and my mother said, ‘That’s ok, we will see five or ten years from now’. If she had been alive today, she probably would have realised that I just knew.”

Biggest Indian oil company finalises deal to import 3-million barrels crude oil from Russia

The Indian Oil Corporation has contracted a deal with a Russian Oil company to import 3-million barrels of crude oil

Indian Oil Corporation Limited has signed a deal with a Russian oil company to import 3 million barrels of crude, according to sources. It’s a company-to-company deal, the sources added. While Western countries have imposed sanctions, including the US’ oil import embargo, on Russia in response to Moscow’s attack on Ukraine, there are no restrictions on Indian oil companies for buying crude oil from Russian oil companies. India’s legitimate energy transactions should not be politicised, and countries self-sufficient in oil or those themselves importing from Russia cannot credibly advocate restrictive trading, government sources had said yesterday. That drew a response from the US, which said India importing discohaunted crude oil from Russia wouldn’t amount to a violation of sanctions; it would imply supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Asked about a report on the possibility that India could take up the Russian offer of discounted crude oil, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had said earlier in the week, “I don’t believe this would be violating that (sanctions).”

New Delhi: Russia-Ukraine Crisis: Kyiv has accused Moscow of committing war crimes by deliberately shelling residential areas as more than 3.25 million refugees have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion. Russia used its newest Kinzhal hypersonic missiles for the first time in Ukraine on Friday to destroy a weapons storage site in the country’s west, the defence ministry said. “The Kinzhal aviation missile system with hypersonic aeroballistic missiles destroyed a large underground warehouse containing missiles and aviation

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for comprehensive peace talks with Moscow, saying Russia would otherwise need generations to recover from losses suffered during the war. “The time has come to restore territorial integrity and justice for Ukraine. Otherwise, Russia’s losses will be such that it will take you several generations to recover,” Mr Zelensky said.

The Union health ministry has asked the states to continue sending Covid-positive samples for sequencing and look out for clusters of infections amid the abated epidemic and the resumption of economic and social activities. All the states should focus on “aggressive and sustained genome sequencing and intensified surveillance”, health secretary Rajesh Bhushan said in a note to all the states, citing the current resurgence of Covid-19 cases in parts of Southeast Asia and Europe. “Effective surveillance by monitoring of emerging clusters of new cases, if any, (and) testing and monitoring of influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness cases (should) be taken up on a continuous basis to ensure that no early warning signals are missed and the spread of infection can be controlled,” Bhushan wrote.

Haridwar, Uttarakhand: Vice President of India M Venkaiah Naidu today asked people of the country to give up their “colonial mindset” and learn to take pride in their own identity. He called for total rejection of the Macaulay system of education in the 75th year of Independence, saying it imposed a foreign language as the medium of education in the country and confined education to the elite. “Centuries of colonial rule taught us to look upon ourselves as an inferior race. We were taught to despise our own culture, traditional wisdom. This slowed our growth as a nation. The imposition of a foreign language as our medium of education confined education to a small section of the society, depriving a vast population of the right to education,” Vice President Naidu said.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, the leader of the G-23 collective of dissenters in the Congress, on Friday said after meeting party president Sonia Gandhi that he had never raised questions about leadership, singing a tune different from his comrade Kapil Sibal who has bluntly asked the Gandhi family to step aside. Azad said: “It was a good meeting with the Congress president. It may be news for you but it was a regular, usual meeting with the president. The discussion was on how to strengthen the Congress and prepare for the upcoming elections. There was no question on leadership. No one in the Congress Working Committee had asked Mrs Gandhi to quit.” Azad has always maintained in public and private conversations that he is not against the Gandhi family’s leadership and that the G-23’s cause is limited to strengthening the Congress organisation.

The study’s details

People Who Are

in Middle Age Face More Health Issues When They’re Older • Researchers say people with obesity in middle age face more serious health effects and higher medical costs when they’re older. • They add the people who have overweight but not obesity in middle age live about as long as people of moderate weight, but they tend to have more lifestyle limitations.

P

eople with obesity in midlife have higher healthcare costs and d i e you nge r t h an people who have “normal” body mass index (BMI) scores, a new studyTrusted Source reports. Researchers reported that people with overweight have higher healthcare and economic costs later in life — what they called the “cumulative burden of morbidity.” They added that people who are overweight or obese are more likely to need treatment for coronary heart disease, heart attacks, peripheral vascular disease, cerebrovascular disease (stroke), and heart failure than people who had normal BMI scores in middle age. Cumulative median healthcare costs among participants with overweight

Researchers also estimated that costs were $23,396 higher among those with obesity. The mean age of death for people with obesity was 80 years old, compared with 82 years of age for those who had normal midlife BMI scores. However, the death rate was not significantly different for people considered overweight but not obese. Their longevity was about the same as those with normal BMIs. WHAT ACTION CAN BE TAKEN Dr. Mir Ali, a bariatric surgeon and medical director of MemorialCare Surgical Weight Loss Center at Orange Coast Medical Center in California, agrees with Khan’s assessment.

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO ACQUIRE HEALTHIER EATING HABITS, SUCH AS MORE PLANT-FORWARD OR PLANT-BASED EATING THAT PUTS WHOLE FOODS, AS NATURE GREW THEM, IN YOUR BODY AHEAD OF LESSHEALTHY PROCESSED AND ANIMAL-BASED FOODS.

—HUNNES TOLD HEALTHLINE

“The earlier a person corrects bad eating and lifestyle habits, the more likely they are to correct the negative effects of obesity. Once organ damage starts occurring due to obesity, the effects are harder to reverse,”

Ali told Healthline. Dana Ellis Hunnes, PhD, a senior dietitian at the University of California, Los Angeles’ medical center and an assistant professor at UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health, said people who have overweight or obesity should take action sooner rather than later. BMIs between 18 and 25 were classified as “normal.” BMIs of 25 to 30 were classified as overweight, and BMIs of 30 or more were classified as obesity. On the surface, the findings are not new. Many other studies have linked Trusted Source obesity with poor health outcomes, and some have also found that cardiovascular fitness may offset some of the health effects associated with having

The study focused on disease burden, longevity, and healthcare expenditures in adults 65 years and older who had overweight and obesity around age 40. The study was based on an analysis of participants in the Chicago Heart Association Detection Project in Industry. Participants were originally examined between November 1967 and January 1973 and then got follow-up exams between January 1985 and December 2015. overweight — the so-called “obesity paradoxTrusted Source.” Howe ver, Dr. Sadiya S. Khan, a study author and an assistant professor of medicine and preventive medicine at Northwestern University in Illinois, told Healthline the new research “moves beyond mortality or death and adds evidence regarding morbidity and disease burden in older adulthood.” Khan stressed that while people with overweight didn’t seem to lose any years of life compared with people with moderate weight, the study still found they experienced significant health problems. “With optimal treatment, it is possible that people [who are] overweight live longer with disease and this weight affects health span without life span,” she said. “Changes to diet and exercise are important beyond weight and can improve healthy life years. This is not just about dying young, but about enjoying

ttention glass-halffull types: Staying optimistic may help you live longer and better than your more pessimistic counterparts. Researchers from Boston University came to that conclusion after following 233 men over 22 years. “This study tests one possible explanation, assessing if more optimistic people handle daily stress more constructively and therefore enjoy better emotional well-being,” Lewina O. Lee, PhD, a study author and clinical psychologist at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder at the VA Boston Healthcare System, and an assistant professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine, said in a press release.

THE BENEFITS OF POSITIVE THINKING A 2019 study by the same research team found that the most optimistic men and women lived 11 to 15 percent longer than the least optimistic people, even after controlling for confounding factors such as chronic disease, educational attainment, and health behaviors like exercise,

diet, and alcohol use. “In the 21st century, a lot of evidence has emerged on optimism and positivity and how they can influence i m mu ne s y ste ms , br ai n function, and physical health,” Jagdish Khubchandani, PhD, a professor of public health at New Mexico State University, told Healthline. “ Too much stress and

affron, also known as kesar, is one of the most ubiquitous spices. A robust and flavourful spice, saffron is easily one of the most expensive ones in the world and is cultivated extensively in the state of Kashmir. Popular in Ayurvedic skincare, saffron is said to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. As such, if you’re looking for ways to use saffron effectively and economically, STEP 1: Gently roast the saffron strands in a pan (do not burn or over roast it) or microwave for 60-90 seconds. Let it rest for 2-3 minutes. STEP 2: In a mortar and pestle, crush the saffron strands after they have cooled down a bit. You can use your hands or a rolling pin as well. STEP 3: Collect the saffron powder and use it to flavour 1/4th cup of water, milk or anything of choice.

India celebrates festival of colours HiIndia Newsdesk

Millions of Indians are celebrating Holi - the festival of colours - amid a sharp dip in Covid-19 cases in the country. The festival saw restricted celebrations last year due to the pandemic. Holi marks the last fullmoon day of the lunar month. It’s a time of great cheer and fun as people smear bright colours on each other.

It also symbolises new beginnings. The day is marked with sumptuous feasts and dancing. Some people also shower each other with flower petals as their bright colours mark the advent of spring. On the eve of the festival, people also light large bonfires to symbolise the triumph of good over evil.

Last year, many states, including capital Delhi, had banned large gatherings on Holi as Covid cases soared across the country. Infections have since come down drastically - India has been logging an average of 2,500 daily new cases for weeks - and restrictions have been eased everywhere.

“Russia is offering oil and other commodities at a heavy discount. We will be happy to take that,” government officials had said. New Delhi: India’s legitimate energy transactions should not be politicised and countries self-sufficient in oil or those themselves importing from Russia cannot credibly advocate restrictive trading, government sources said. The US had on Friday said that while India importing discounted crude oil from Russia won’t amount to violating its sanctions, it would imply supporting the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), the nation’s top oil firm, has already bought as much as 3 million barrels of crude oil that Russia had offered at a steep discount to prevailing international rates, said sources.

Xi Hints At Tweak To China Covid Strategy Amid Worst Outbreak Since Wuhan HiIndia Newsdesk

Just three weeks ago China was reporting under 100 Covid cases daily, but that number has swelled past 1,000 per day for a week. Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged to reduce the economic impact of his Covid-fighting measures, signaling a shift in a longstanding strategy that has minimized fatalities but weighed heavily on the world’s secondlargest economy. While reiterating the commitment to its CovidZero policy, China will “strive to achieve the maximum prevention and control effect at the least cost and minimize the impact of the epidemic on economic and social development,” Xi told a meeting late Thursday of the politburo standing committee, the Communist Party’s top decision-making body.
