“Will Force Those... To Think Again”: Putin After Russia Test-Fires Missile

Russia said it test fired a new intercontinental ballistic missile, a move President Vladimir Putin said would give the U.S. and its allies something to think about. It almost certainly ups the ante almost two months since Russia invaded Ukraine and it comes at a delicate moment in the conflict as its forces step up their offensive in the eastern Donbas region. The Russian leader was shown on state television watching a video of the missile launch and remarked that “this unique weapon will strengthen the military potential of our armed forces, will reliably guarantee Russia’s security against outside threats and force those, who in the heat of frenzied aggressive rhetoric try to threaten our country, to think again.”

WA S H I N G T O N : T h e B i d e n administration on Tuesday opened applications for a $6 billion program to help nuclear power plants struggling with rising costs as it seeks to stop the generators from shutting down under its goal of transitioning to clean energy. The U.S. nuclear power industry’s 93 reactors generate more than half of the country’s carbon-free electricity, according to the Department of Energy (DOE). But 12 reactors have closed since 2013 in the face of competition from renewable energy and plants that burn plentiful natural gas.

Washington: The United States is imposing visa restrictions on 635 Russian nationals for alleged activities that threaten Ukraine as well as on three Russian officials for purported involvement in human rights abuses in Donbas, the Treasury Department said on Wednesday. “The United States is imposing visa restrictions on 635 Russian nationals who are involved in suppressing dissent in Russia and abroad, who have been involved in activities that threaten the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and who have been involved in human rights abuses in prison facilities and places of unofficial detention in Russia-controlled areas of the Donbas region of Ukraine,” the press release said.

Pentagon Says Russia Notified US Ahead Of “Routine” Missile Launch

HiIndia Newsdesk

WASHINGTON: Russia properly notified the United States ahead of its test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, the Pentagon said on Wednesday, adding it saw the test as routine and not a threat to the United States. Russia said earlier on Wednesday it had conducted a first test launch of its Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, a new addition to its nuclear arsenal which President Vladimir Putin said would give Moscow’s enemies something to think about.

In addition, safety costs have soared after the 2011 tsunami at Japan’s Fukushima plant and after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The industry produces toxic waste, currently stored on site at plants across 28 states. The DOE said it will take applications from owners of nuclear plants for the first round of funding in its Civil Nuclear Credit Program until May 19. It will prioritize reactors that have already announced their intention to close. The program, intended for plants in states with competitive electricity markets, was funded by the infrastructure bill that passed last year.

WASHINGTON, April 20 (Reuters) - U.S. law enforcement officials have charged 21 people across the country with healthcare schemes amid the pandemic as part of the administration’s larger effort to thwart people from leveraging COVID-19 for fraud, the Department of Justice said on Wednesday. The latest charges include cases involving filing false Medicare and other billing claims, kickbacks and money laundering, the department said, adding the alleged actions led

to more than $149 million in COVID19-related false billings to federal programs and theft from federallyfunded pandemic assistance programs. More than $8 million in cash and other fraud proceeds were able to be recovered, it said in a statement. “Throughout the pandemic, we have seen trusted medical professionals orchestrate and carry out egregious crimes against their patients all for financial gain,” Luis Quesada, assistant director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Criminal Investigative Division, said. Others were charged with manufacturing and distributing fake COVID-19 vaccine record cards, it added. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services separately said it had taken 28 administrative actions against healthcare providers for their alleged fraud, according to the Justice Department.

USA News in Brief US Targets Russian Bank, Oligarchs In New Round Of Sanctions Over Ukraine

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: The US Treasury announced fresh punitive measures Wednesday against Russia’s Transkapitalbank as well as a sprawling network around oligarch Konstantin Malofeyev which was allegedly used to evade sanctions. The privately-owned Transkapitalbank was placed under blocking sanctions, which seek to prevent it from accessing global financial networks by forbidding US institutions and individuals, or others with US operations, from dealings with it. The Treasury said the bank had set up its own internetbased financial transfer system and offered access to banks in China, the Middle East and elsewhere, to enable settlements of US dollar payments without involving the global SWIFT settlement system and avoiding payments transiting the US banking system.

US President Joe Biden Set To Announce New Military Aid For Ukraine

HiIndia Newsdesk

Washington: President Joe Biden will deliver an update on the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Thursday as he works to complete a new arms package for its military. Biden is to address Americans from the White House Roosevelt Room at 9.45 a.m. (1345 GMT) and a source familiar with the planning said he is “expected to provide an update on our efforts to support Ukraine and the assistance we are providing.” The new arms package was likely to be roughly the same size as an $800 million one announced last week but details were still being worked out, another U.S. official told Reuters earlier. On Wednesday, Biden convened U.S. military leaders in an annual White House gathering that took on special significance as the war enters a risky new phase.

Russia tests missile that can deploy nuclear warheads HiIndia Newsdesk

Russia announced on Wednesday it had successfully launched a new missile that it said could deploy nuclear warheads at hypersonic speeds anywhere in the world and outwit defences, a move that President Putin said was aimed at showing Russia’s adversaries that they needed to “think twice” before threatening his country. But even if the test was successful, the new missile does not appear ready for use. The Russian defence ministry said Wednesday’s test launch of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile was its first and that it would enter Russia’s arsenal only “after the completion of the testing programme”.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is unlikely to lecture New Delhi publicly

on the need to cut ties with Russia during his two-city India visit — beginning Thursday — while continuing to work with other like-minded countries to provide India alternatives to Russian procurements in defence and energy sectors. Ahead of his arrival in Ahmedabad on Thursday, British newspapers on Wednesday reported that Boris had told his cabinet that Britain “would not seek to lecture other democratically elected governments on what course of action was best for them’’, echoing a stance taken publicly in New Delhi by his foreign secretary Liz Truss last month.

Queen Elizabeth Working with assertive China a must - New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern II Turns 96

HiIndia Newsdesk

London, United Kingdom: Gun salutes will ring out Thursday to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s 96th birthday, although the monarch herself was expected to mark the occasion with little fanfare. It has been a troubled year for Britain’s royal family, with concerns over the queen’s health and questions over the future of the monarchy. Rounds will be fired from the Tower of London and Hyde Park in the British capital, where a military band will also play “Happy Birthday”. Royal tradition since the 18th century has also seen the monarch have a second, official birthday, typically celebrated in warmer weather in June.

New Zealand has been aware for some time now of a “growing assertiveness” and a “growing interest” in its region - explicitly from China, according to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. HiIndia Newsdesk

Ms Ardern also spoke of the need to work together with China, on areas of “natural mutual interest”. Speaking to the BBC in an exclusive

broadcast interview, she stood by what she called her country’s “mature relationship” with Beijing, but still expressed her “disappointment” that the Solomon Islands had cemented a security deal with China, fuelling fears Beijing could set up a military base on the island. There is already an agreement signed by Pacific Island forum members called the “Biketawa” declaration, she said - which sets an expectation these countries provide for their own security needs together as a region. “One of the reasons we’ve expressed this disappointment [is]... Australia and New Zealand both have heeded the call of the Solomons for support during recent disruption,” she said. “And we’ve again highlighted that should any extended need exist, we are there to help and support. So… what gap remains that requires such an agreement with China?”

We tried our best, including myself, to remove misunderstandings with the establishment but could not succeed,” former minister Fawad Chaudhry told a private news channel on Wednesday.

Shanghai: Shanghai further eased its weeks-long Covid-19 lockdown on Wednesday despite mounting deaths and tens of thousands of new cases -- but some residents are furious that uneven enforcement is still leaving them trapped at home. China’s largest city is inching towards reopening as businesses and residents grow increasingly desperate over closures and food shortages. Faced with the country’s worst virus outbreak in two years, Shanghai has confined most of its 25 million people to their homes since last month, doubling down on the Communist Party’s unrelenting zero-Covid approach. But the surge, driven by the fast-spreading Omicron variant, has thwarted official efforts to avert a pandemic rebound, with more than 400,000 infections reported since March. City authorities confirmed seven Covid-19 deaths and more than 18,000 mostly asymptomatic new cases on Wednesday, while also announcing four million more people had been released from the strictest version of lockdown.

She denied the charge, which was linked to an invitation to her followers to get paid for making live videos.

The central ministry for traditional medicines has advised state authorities to “take necessary action” on complaints that Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved had allegedly promoted products for heart disease and liver disorders through illegal advertisements. The ayush ministry has sought the withdrawal of advertisements for certain Patanjali products — Lipidom, Livogrit and Livamrit — after receiving complaints that they contravene the Drugs and Magic Remedies Act (Objectionable Advertisements) 1954. The central drug regulatory authority forwarded the complaint to the ayush ministry’s drug policy section, which has said it was already looking into the advertisements for Lipidom that had been “brought to the notice of the ministry”. Patanjali had advertised Livogrit and Livamrit as “evidencebased medicines” for “instant benefit in problems related to fatty liver, liver cirrhosis, and the digestive system”.

They held a summit virtually last year. Gujarat has figured on Johnson’s travel itinerary for the simple reason that the state’s highly lucrative dairy industry has been “up in arms” against granting greater market access to British and European dairy products, sources told ThePrint.

professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, the UK is facing significant protest from the Indian producers over the import of dairy products from Britain. “That is one of the reasons why PM Johnson is visiting Gujarat first as the export-oriented dairy industry is concentrated there… It is true that Indian dairy products are banned in

the UK, EU and Australia. Hence, the industry is all the more opposed to doing any kind of free trade arrangement with these countries or regions. The Indian dairy industry is also upset with the fact that the UK subsidises cows and hence, the price of milk on those markets is much lower,” Mukherjee said. “UK companies want India to reduce tariffs on dairy products, which is currently 100-150 per cent and are asking if some of their products can enter in the high-end specialised market. Discussions may focus on this aspect,” she added. “This is one of the reasons why Johnson is going to Ahmedabad, because it is important to speak to the business community there as the UK is keen on exporting some of their products to India,” Bhagwati, now a distinguished fellow with the Centre for Social and Economic Progress (CSEP), said.

orld Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is on a threeday trip to India and, Tuesday, tweeted his thanks for a “warm welcome” from the government after landing in Gujarat’s Rajkot the previous night. Dr Tedros is scheduled to attend events with Prime Minister Narendra Modi across the latter’s home state, including laying the foundation stone of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine (GCTM) in Jamnagar, which was done Tuesday, and inauguration of the Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit. “This is a truly global project… This means that India will go to the world and the whole world will come to India,” the WHO chief said at the GCTM ceremony, while the PM noted Dr Tedros’s “affection for India”. Beneath these niceties, however, all is not well between the top world health body and the Indian government. And it’s out in the open. The two have been at odds over the Covid mortality rate in India, with a WHO analysis putting the figure at “more than 4 million” while the government’s official toll is 5,20,000, or just over half a million. “It is very surprising that while The New York Times purportedly could obtain the alleged figures of excess Covid-19 mortality in respect to India, it was ‘unable to learn the estimates for other countries’,” the sharp Indian statement

hen members of Operation Dudula marched through South Africa’s port city of Durban chanting antiimmigrant songs, they demanded that authorities crack down on undocumented immigrants. “People are coming into the country and they are not documented and the government is doing nothing about it, and it’s difficult to find them when they commit crime,” said Zandile Dabula, National Secretary for Operation Dudula. Anti-foreigner sentiment in South Africa is nothing new, but Operation Dudula’s rhetoric equates foreign African nationals living in South Africa with crime. This is troubling for Professor Loren Landau of the African Center for Migration and Society at University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.. “It’s turned your average citizen into your immigration or police department. That’s dangerous because it’s not only that they’re looking for foreigners, but also anyone they feel shouldn’t be in that community,” Landau told DW. ‘They steal our jobs’

Despite high unemployment rates, South Africa’s economy dwarfs those of neighboring countries, and many are drawn to the economic engine room of Gauteng province. “Operation Dudula capitalized on deep dissatisfaction with the state of being in South Africa, with unemployment, with inequality, with lack of services. And in that sense,

But for Landau, condemning Operation Dudula and xenophobia is not enough. Instead, R amapho s a’s gove r n me nt must change the dire poverty and poor economic conditions for millions of South Africans. “Until he accepts that responsibility and offers a plan for addressing the root causes, I think people are going to continue to hear him as a sort of distant noise rather than as something that they can believe in,” he told DW. Meanwhile, Lwazi keeps his head down, works his part-time job, and cares for his young daughter. “I’m just happy, God has been good to me,” he said. “But it doesn’t change my situation.” Courtsy : THE FRONTLINE

Monopoly, ‘unfair control of Google & FB’, fake news: TRAI flags challenges for digital media

I

n a recent consultation paper, India’s telecom regulator has highlighted concerns of monopoly in the digital media market, unfair control of tech giants like Google and Facebook over digital advertising revenue, and the spiralling problem of fake news content. The paper, released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), released on 12 April, is now open for public feedback. In particular, the paper points out ‘cross-media ownership’, a phenomenon under which a corporate house comes to hold multiple media houses, leading to a monopolistic market. The paper states the media has changed in the last few years — not just in terms of consumption but also from the standpoint of ownership — and suggests a regulatory body to check market monopoly. The paper cites the case of Jio Fiber as an example of cross-ownership. JioFiber is a high-speed internet service offered by Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, a telecommunications company and a subsidiary of Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries. According to the paper, Jio Fiber’s decision to bundle OTT platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, and Amazon Prime Video along with its telecom and internet services could lead to not just a monopoly, but also challenges in media regulation and checking fake news.

Problem facing print publications The TRAI has also highlighted the steady decline in revenues for print publications, and mentions their concerns about the monopoly of Google and Facebook over news content. The paper quotes accounting company KPMG’s report on the steady decline of print media revenues since

TRAI’s consultation paper states media has changed, not just in terms of consumption but also ownership. It suggests a regulatory body to check market monopoly. content, the paper moots a regulatory body to enforce revenue sharing in digital media advertising.

Monopoly and media biases 2014 — the data, TRAI’s consultation paper says, shows that the growth of these revenues was negative 9 per cent in 2019-20, compared to the digital media’s positive 17 per cent. This shortfall, the paper said, came despite digital innovations such as e-papers and creating digital platforms. Additionally, the TRAI quotes print publications as having complained about the monopoly of tech giants like Facebook, Google, Twitter, and Instagram over advertising revenues. Print publications accuse these organisations of unequal distribution of advertising revenues and unfairly profiting from their news content. According to the paper, print publishers have claimed that “these tech giants are making money by advertising on the strength of their news content though Facebook and Google claim that they are basically helping publishers by directing traffic to their websites”. Given the role of tech giants in pushing out digital

The media, the TRAI says, is a “capital-intensive sector” — a sphere that requires large investments for its survival. As a result, investors with specific political leanings or corporate interests could affect the media’s advertising revenue. “Media interests of corporate entities have been justified in fulfilling the funding requirements of this sector,” the paper says. “In a market economy, the right to invest in a line of business is the choice of any business entity. However, in such a scenario, a quid-pro-quo guaranteeing favourable coverage to the controlling entity can never be ruled out.” Therefore, there is a “need of ensuring the independence of media from political and commercial influences”, the paper says.

The fake news phenomenon The consultation paper notes with concern the increased role fake news content plays in shaping public opinion since the rise of social media. “The horrific effects of fake news have been manifested before the society in the recent incidents of mob lynching, riots, and sacrilege cases,” the paper says.

New York Man Pleads Guilty For Role In A Computer Fraud Targeted The Elderly HiIndia Newsdesk

A New York based man, Mohammad Alam, 50, pled guilty in a computer technical support fraud scheme that targeted elderly victims throughout the United States including the Middle District of Louisiana. The scheme involved international participants, targeted over 30 victims, and took in approximately $340,000 in fraudulent proceeds. A call center located in India told people their computer had an issue which they could fix for a fee, prosecutors said,

though nothing was broken. The call center would then contact the people again and ask for access to their bank accounts to issue a refund they were entitled to, prosecutors said. The callers, who then controlled the accounts, were able to transfer money from victims’ saving accounts to their checking accounts so it appeared they had been refunded too much money. They then asked victims to return the extra cash. A Louisiana resident sent $9,900 to Alam believing she was returning the extra refund, court documents show.

Our aim is that this series will create a pipeline for leadership so that more and more individuals in our community can inspire and educate others on how to organize during a time when the stakes have never been higher,” said Harini Krishnan, SAFA Chair of Community Organizing. WASHINGTON, DC- The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday issued an emergency use authorization for what it said is the first device that can detect COVID-19 in breath samples. The InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer is about the size of a piece of carry-on luggage, the FDA said, and can be used in doctor’s offices, hospitals and mobile testing sites. The test, which can provide results in less than three minutes, must be carried out under the supervision of a licensed health care provider. Dr. Jeff Shuren, director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health, called the device “yet another example of the rapid innovation occurring with diagnostic tests for COVID-19.” The FDA said the device was 91.2% accurate at identifying positive test samples and 99.3% accurate at identifying negative test samples. “InspectIR expects to be able to produce approximately 100 instruments per week, which can each be used to evaluate approximately 160 samples per day,” the agency said. “At this level of production, testing capacity using the InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer is expected to increase by approximately 64,000 samples per month.”

O

ur understanding of schizophrenia has been stuck in a kind of black box for decades — experts say we don’t really know what is going on inside the brain. We know that schizophrenia is a serious mental condition, characterized by hallucinations, periods of psychosis and a detachment from reality. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that schizophrenia affects about 1 in 300 people worldwide. Only we don’t really know why: Why it happens or how we can treat it. “Our knowledge about schizophrenia is close to zero,” says Stephan Ripke, a researcher at Berlin’s Charitie university hospital and a co-author on one of two papers published in the science journal Nature on Wednesday (April 6, 2022).

Discovery may lead to new treatment The researchers say they have a better understanding now of why schizophrenia happens biologically. Previously, researchers had focused on so-called environmental factors, such as a person’s diet or whether they consumed recreational drugs. Ripke says the discovery of the gene mutations will not make it easier to diagnose patients with schizophrenia earlier in life. But it could help scientists to estimate a person’s risk and improve treatments for the illness with medicine. There are medicines for schizophrenia but they do not address the disorder’s root cause. The drugs we use today only tone down the effects of schizophrenia. But now that researchers know more about what’s happening in the brain to cause schizophrenia, they may be able to develop better drugs to treat it. Ripke and others in an international team say they have made a landmark discovery in the biological understanding of schizophrenia. They say they have discovered at least ten gene mutations that strongly influence a person’s likelihood of developing the disease and 120 more that could play a role. Schizophrenia usually starts presenting in patients in late adolescence and their 20s.

Schizophrenia Gene discovery indicates risk and cause

Researchers have discovered gene mutations that indicate a person’s risk of developing schizophrenia and its causes. This may help improve drug treatments Researchers have been able to study the environmental aspect of the disease — they’ve found that where a person grows up, teenage cannabis use and nutrition during pregnancy can all play a role in its development. Although scientists know that schizophrenia is 60 to 80% hereditary, they have little understanding of the genetics of the disease. As Ripke said earlier, their knowledge about the biology of schizophrenia is “close to zero.” That’s due to a number of problems that are not limited to schizophrenia, says Ripke. Those problems exist in many other mental illnesses — bipolar disorder or borderline personality disorder, for example.

First, there’s no way to study the disease in animals, Ripke says. And it can’t be diagnosed through a blood test or even a brain scan. “We only have questions, answers and observations, and even the observations are not enough if we don’t [share a] language. Basically, we need to know if the people have hallucinations, if they hear voices,” says Ripke. So, that rules out non-human animals because they can’t talk to us and we can’t talk to them. The importance of language in the diagnosis and subsequent study of schizophrenia means that research has to be done on humans. Ethical concerns have kept scientists from collecting the samples they need to facilitate genetic analysis once they do make that language-based diagnosis. “We cannot take samples out of the living organ,” says Ripke. “We cannot just take brain cells from schizophrenia patients.”

Towards new schizophrenia medication

Today’s schizophrenia medication is still based on a discovery made in the 1950s, says Ripke. T h e f i r s t ant ip s yc h ot i c m e d i c at i on w a s chlorpromazine, which is still prescribed for the condition. Chlorpromazine blocks a person’s dopamine receptors. There are other antipsychotic medications, but they all work in a similar way to chlorpromazine. Chlorpromazine was originally developed as an anesthetic. Its use in psychiatry came about by accident when doctors found that the drug helped prevent hallucinations in psychiatric patients. “It was not that somebody actually found a broken dopamine receptor or measured high levels of dopamine in the blood or in the brain or something like that,” says Ripke. “That was not the case. It was just an incidental finding. It never came from research.” But the scientists say they have there’s a better chance now of developing medication that addresses the root of the problem, rather than only the symptoms, like hallucination. These enormous, population-wide DNA sequencing experiments are scientists’ best bet at figuring out how to do that. But Ripke says that’s only possible when people volunteer. “The study would have never worked without the trust of thousands and thousands of patients who gave us their genetic information,” says Ripke. “We are so utterly thankful to all the people who trusted us with their data.”

Latest Omicron strain unlikely to cause new wave of pandemic: Russian expert XE variant is likely to cause about a 10 per cent rise in contagiousness

he latest coronavirus variant dubbed Omicron XE is more contagious than previous ones, but it is unlikely to cause a new wave of the pandemic, a top Russian expert has said. The World Health

CULTURE

Madhavpur

Where Krishna Wed Rukmini

Madhavpur, a small village close to Porbandar in Gujarat stands testimony to one of the worlds’ oldest romantic stories – that of Lord Krishna and Maharani Rukmini.

Zofeen Maqsood

L

ooking for a holiday steeped in history, culture and romance? Look no further than Madhavpur, a tiny hamlet located on the seashore near Porbandar in Gujarat, India. This relatively less-explored village boasts of an enormous cultural significance. This is the place where Lord Krishna got married to Rukmini. The 150 year old shrine of Madhavraiji, still stands as a manifestation of that splendid time in the history of India. Apart from the Madhavraiji Haveli Temple where the marriage was solemnized, there is also Rukmini no choro – a place where an annual fair is held to commemorate the divine union of the deity. A Shiva temple dating back to possibly 12th century also holds ground. Even though the historic sights are somewhat damaged due to years of erosion from the ocean nearby, the ruins affirm the bounty and marvel of the place. But if you thought that Madhavpur was an obscure destination, with only historic sites then there is much more to literally take your breath away. Located along the seashore, the towns’ placid waters give way to serene coastline extending as far as the eyes can see. Lush coconut trees and fertile pastoral lands serve as a balm to weary eyes. Though the beach is not safe for swimming, the sandy beach is a great destination for a family holiday where you want to just learn more about culture and revel in the beauty it offers. Gujarat Tourism is working towards promoting this historic place as a unique holiday destination that gives the visitors from across the globe a holistic experience. From educating the people about the cultural significance and story behind the structures to creating amiable facilities to cater to global travellers, the tourism board is going all out to ensure that this emblem of history retains its glory. In this pursuit to promote this mystical place, Alok Pandey, Managing Director of Tourism Department, Gujarat also

Madhavpur Mela of Gujarat While it may be a good idea to visit Madhavpur, whenever you can. One of its major attractions remains the annual Madhavpur Mela of Gujarat commencing on the festival of RamNavmi. What may come as a beautiful surprise for many is the confluence of Western India with the Eastern India that one gets to witness in this yearly affair. Tracing her roots to the Mishmi Tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, daughter of King Bhishmaka, Rukmini hailed from Arunachal Pradesh. The festival celebrates their tribal legacy till this day. When you sit in this extreme Western part of India and witness cultural performances glorifying the traditions of a tribe originating from the Eastern most part of India, only then you imbibe the cultural exchange that has been a part of India’s disposition. During the performances you can see a riveting re-enactment of Rukmini Haran performed by the folk troupes from the Assam region. Folk, cultural performances from the north eastern states such as Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, traditional songs in regional genres celebrating Rukmini and dance dramas based on the life of Krishna and Rukmini. A vibrant chariot carrying the idol of Lord Krishna navigates through the village during the five day long festivities. The fair is a great place to explore our national traditions not just for locals and for people across the country but also especially for the second and third generation Indians living thousands of miles away from their homelands. This mela can be a perfect representation of the charm and antiquity of the land of their forefathers.

The History

The story of how Lord Krishna married Maharani Rukmini is a tale full of romance, feminism, bravado and breaking barriers. A story that took place thousands of years ago in ancient India manages to teach us a lesson or two. As the legend goes Rukmini was the daughter of king Bhishmaka and she belonged to Vidharbha kingdom. His brothers especially one called Rukmi wanted to marry her off in a political alliance

Other Attractions

While the historic significance of this place establishes it as a tourist spot in its own right, if you are planning a trip to Madhavpur you can add some attractions in your itinerary. At the nearby Gir Somnath you can go on an animal safari. A little over a two hour drive from Madhavpur would take you to Dwarka – home to many historic temples. Less than a hundred kilometres away is Junagadh Fort built by the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta. A trip to Madhavpur can be full of surprise sights and explorations nearby which can serve as a fantastic memory for the entire family.

Getting there:

Situated 327 kilometers away from the capital city of Ahmedabad, Madhvpur is easily connected by bus, train and plane from cities across India. The nearest airport is in Porbandar which is a domestic airport.

Alok Pandey, Managing Director of Tourism Department,

Bustling with historic significance and cultural harmony that India has witnessed for centuries, this tiny hamlet in Gujarat is a must-visit destination for Indians from across the globe recently released a short You Tube video titled Shri Krishna Rukmini Vivah, that captures the stunning beauty of the Madhavpur beach while detailing the endearing tale of one the world’s oldest love love story that culminated in Krishna Rukmini vivah. Mr Pandey, an Indian Administrative Services officer also tells how the Madhavraiji temple which is one of the protected monuments according to Archaelogical Survey defies the concept purported by modern historians that India has not been home to national and geographical unity. The fact that Maharani Rukmini a princess from Eastern state could urge Lord Krishna to travel from Dwarka all the way to todays’ Malanipuram in Arunachal Pradesh to wed her and win her over all odds shows that harmony existed in India since time immemorial. Mr Pandey also explains the wonderful architecture of the video which features Krishna statues in kalaki avatar and one of finest craftsmanship. If you are thinking of exploring the place, watching this 7 minute video will be a good place to start your understanding of this place filled with paramount historic significance.

Former tennis star Maria Sharapova on Wednesday took to Instagram to announce her pregnancy. She shared a picture of her on a beach and wrote “Precious beginnings!!! Eating birthday cake for two has always been my specialty.” Sharapova is expecting the child with fiance Alexander Gilkes, a British businessman.

Promising teenaged TT player Vishwa dies in Meghalaya road accident

Manchester United interim managerRalf Rangnick said the Red Devils are “six years” behind Liverpool after being blown away in a 4-0 defeat at Anfield on Tuesday. Jurgen Klopp’s men won 5-0 at Old Trafford in October and expectations of a similar rout were well-founded as Liverpool exposed the massive gulf between the sides with Mohamed Salah scoring twice and Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane also on target. Liverpool move two points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table, but still need the English champions to slip up in their remaining seven league games of the season to win the title. Rangnick will step aside at the end of the season, with Ajax manager Erik ten Hag reportedly set to take over. And the German said the impact Klopp has made on transforming Liverpool’s fortunes is the example for United to follow. “It is embarrassing, it is disappointing, maybe even humiliating,” said Rangnick. “We have to accept they are six years ahead of us now. When Jurgen Klopp came they changed at the club and lifted not just the team but the club and city to a new level.

A distraught Rohit Sharma took “full responsibility” for Mumbai Indians’ dismal IPL season after they lost its sixth consecutive match, saying he is at his wits end to understand what course correction is needed to get them back on track. Skipper Rohit has himself endured a nightmare of a tournament, managing only 114 runs from six games and a highest score of 41. “If I know what’s going wrong, I’d correct it but it’s not coming off. I’m trying to prepare myself in the way I prepare for every game, that is no different. It’s not coming off,” Rohit said after MI lost to Lucknow Super Giants by 18 runs on Saturday. “I take the full responsibility of not putting the team in the situation of what they expect from me. I back myself to go out there and enjoy the game and doing what I have been doing all these years.“It’s important to keep looking forward. It’s not the end of the world, we have come back before and we will try and come back again,” the skipper tried to put up a brave face but the disappointment was all too palpable.

“Last Time I Saw Him He Was Commentating”: AB de Villiers In Awe Of Dinesh Karthik HiIndia Newsdesk

Promising table tennis player from Tamil Nadu Vishwa Deenadayalan lost his life in a road accident while travelling to Shillong to take part in the 83rd Senior National & Inter-State table tennis championships. According to the report, the police said the taxi, that he was travelling in, collided with a 12-wheel truck in Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district on Sunday. As per an ANI report, three more players from the southern Indian state besides Vishwa Deenadayalan were travelling from Guwahati Airport to Shillong to take part in the 83rd Senior National Table Tennis Championship. According to the police, the accident happened in Shangbangla area at around 1:50 pm.

Dinesh Karthik has been a man on a mission in IPL 2022, singlehandedly changing the fortunes of Royal Challengers Bangalore. Karthik has excelled in his role as a finisher for RCB, winning matches while chasing as well as helping the team set big totals, like he did against Delhi Capitals. “I was incredibly surprised and I didn’t expect it. I have always known that he is a very capable player, a nitty-gritty kind of a guy. He likes the high pressure situations and he’s a busy player at the wicket. But he hasn’t played a lot of cricket. The last time I saw AB de Villiers has been left him before IPL he was commentating awestruck by Karthik’s form as in the UK. He wasn’t playing a lot of domestic cricket and I though he is he had last seen the wicket- possibly at the end of his career finishing. keeper batter commentating in But he surprised us all I think with the the UK. Kohli said it has been a joy and honour to watch the wicket-keeper batter go about his business in the competition. “I am here with the man of the IPL for me so far…It’s been wonderful. I won’t even say ‘long may it continue’ because it will and you’re in that space and I can see that. It was an honour to watch you bat again. Thanks for getting us across the line,” said Kohli. The former India captain said his long-time RCB teammate AB de Villiers will also be proud of Karthik for finishing games for the franchise like the South African used to do. “I am very happy that DK is so clear in his goals. I can surely tell you that you have presented a very strong case for yourself moving forward playing T20 cricket not just for RCB but also I am sure lot of people are taking notice at the highest level as well. “You mentioned. I think AB will be very proud watching from Pretoria, sitting at home and watching you finish games for us and take the team across the line,” he added.
