wo scuba divers from Florida discovered a mammoth four-foot, 50-pound (23-kg approximately) bone, possibly dating back to the Ice Age, while diving in a local river. Derek Demeter and Henry Sadler found the bone embedded in the sand at the bottom of the Peace River. Henry shared the image on Instagram, saying that it was a “once-in-a-lifetime” discovery. “I was fortunate enough to find two amazing once-in-a-lifetime fossils yesterday,” he wrote, adding, “Pictured here is a Colombian mammoth leg bone, and while not as rare as the other thing, it is still an incredible find. Amazingly, it is almost completely undamaged and very well mineralised.” His followers soon flooded his comments section. While a user, who went by the name ‘fearlessfitgeek’, wrote, “This is amazing!”, ‘owengilpin631’ said “That’s huge! It’s a killer find.” A third user, ‘corey_reed_’ commented, “No way! This is insane.” Another user ‘coleharken’ also congratulated the duo “on the amazing discovery”. An impressed follower, ‘world_of_fossils’ exclaimed, “Very impressive! Don’t find them that big often!” The two divers also found a tooth belonging to a sabertooth tiger on the same expedition. Mammoths were giant furry ancestors of the elephant that first arrived in North America over one million years ago. They went extinct about 11,000 years ago. The Columbian mammoth was the largest of its kind even reaching a height of 14-feet. These mammoths weighed about five cars stacked on top of each other, and their tusks could easy extend the width of two bicycles laid end-to-end.

US backs waiver on US is helping India significantly, vaccine intellectual property
says President Biden HiIndia Newsdesk
HiIndia Newsdesk The US has thrown its support behind an initiative at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to waive intellectual property protections for coronavirus vaccines. India and South Africa proposed the move, which they said would increase vaccine production around the world. But drugs manufacturers argue it may not have the desired effect. US Trade Representative Katherine Tai said that “extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures”. And she warned that it would take time for WTO members to reach a consensus decision on the matter. India and South Africa were the leading voices in a group of about 60 countries which for the last six months has been trying to get the patents on vaccines set aside.
The US is helping India “significantly” in its fight against the second wave of COVID-19 by sending it material and machine parts, President Joe Biden has said. So far, six air shipments funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have departed the US for India. These flights include health supplies, oxygen cylinders, N95 masks, and medicines. “We are helping Brazil. We are helping India significantly. I spoke to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi. What he needs most is the material and the parts to be able to have his machines that can make the vaccine work. We’re sending him that,” Joe Biden told reporters at the White House. “We’re sending them oxygen. We are sending
them a lot of the precursors. So we’re doing a lot for India,” he said responding to a question on his assistance to India, Brazil, and other countries amid the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. Joe Biden said by July 4, the US is going to send 10 per cent of AstraZeneca vaccines to other countries. AstraZeneca vaccine is being used around the world but has not been approved for use in the US. “ Wi t h r e g a r d t o t h e AstraZeneca vaccine which we had, we have sent that vaccine to Canada and to Mexico and there are other countries that we’re talking to now. Matter of fact, I talked to a head of state today. I’m not prepared to announce who else we’ll be giving the vaccine to,” the US president said.
US Lawmakers Applaud India’s 3 US Senators Urge Biden US supplies of vaccine components Decision To Not Allow Chinese Administration To Accelerate to India COVID-19 Assistance To India Firms To Conduct 5G Trials HiIndia Newsdesk
HiIndia Newsdesk The US on Wednesday said the vaccine components it has supplied to India this week will enable the manufacturing of two crore doses of the Covishield vaccine even as the sixth shipment of American medical aid arrived as part of the Biden administration’s assistance to the country’s response to a rising number of COVID-19 cases. The United States also sent a separate shipment of over 81,000 vials of Remdesivir injections that was delivered in Mumbai.
Pandemic adds to fall in US birthrate
HiIndia Newsdesk The birthrate declined for the sixth straight year in 2020, the federal government reported on Wednesday, early evidence that the coronavirus pandemic accelerated a trend among American women of delaying pregnancy. Early in the pandemic, there was speculation that the major changes in the life of American families could lead to a recovery in the birthrate, as couples hunkered down together. In fact, they appeared to have had the opposite effect: Births were down most sharply at the end of the year, when babies conceived at the start of the pandemic would have been born.
Wa s h i n g t o n : To p U S lawmakers have applauded India’s decision to not allow Chinese telecom companies to conduct 5G trials in the country. The Department of Telecom in India on Tuesday had approved applications of telecom companies Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and MTNL to conduct 5G trials but none of them would be using technologies of Chinese entities. “India’s decision to exclude Huawei and ZTE from its 5G trials is good news for the people of India and the world,” House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican and China Task Force Chairman Michael McCaul said in a statement on Wednesday. “People’s Republic of China law requires any Chinese company - including Huawei and ZTE - to work for the Chinese Communist Party if asked,” Mr McCaul said.
HiIndia Newsdesk Washington: Three top US senators have urged the Biden administration to ramp up its COVID-19 assistance to India, saying the country is currently registering over 3,00,000 new cases every day and its health care system is
struggling to keep up with the surge. Commending for recent actions to help India address the crisis, the three senators in a letter to Secretary of State Tony Blinken also urged the administration to continue its robust contribution to the WHO’s COVAX plan and prepare a detailed strategy on how the US can distribute its surplus of vaccines. Senators Mark Warner, John Cornyn, and Ron Portman warned of “disinformation campaigns surrounding the vaccines by countries such as China and Russia”, and urged the administration to do everything it can to combat these campaigns.
Melinda Gates Receives Billions From Cascade, Bill Gates’s Biggest Asset
HiIndia Newsdesk Cascade Investment, the holding company created by Bill Gates, transferred stock in two of Mexico’s largest companies to Melinda French Gates, bringing the total amount she’s received in the past few days to more than $2 billion. Cascade moved stock in Coca-Cola FEMSA and Grupo Televisa to her control, according to regulatory filings dated May 3, the same day the Gateses announced they were ending their 27-year marriage. Cascade shifted about $1.8 billion of shares in Canadian National Railway Co. and AutoNation Inc. this week to French Gates, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. Their separation is expected to involve a wealth transfer on a scale that’s only been seen in a few other divorces, though few details have yet emerged. It could also have ramifications for one of the most important philanthropic organizations on the planet. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has given away in excess of $50 billion to support healthcare, education, gender equality and efforts to combat climate change.

Two of the killings took place in broad daylight: one in a rural town centre in the south of the country, another at a train and bus station in Linkoping, a university city south of the capital. In Flemingsberg, a low-income Stockholm suburb packed with tower blocks clad in primary colours, a woman was stabbed in the apartment she shared with four young children. The man arrested on suspicion of her murder is someone she reportedly knew well. The recent wave of killings comes amidst growing concerns about violence towards women in Sweden, which has long held a reputation as one of the world’s safest and most gender-equal countries.
HiIndia Newsdesk Israel’s president has asked the leader of the centrist Yesh Atid party, Yair Lapid,
to try to form a government. Reuven Rivlin announced that he had given Mr Lapid the mandate after long-time Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to meet an overnight deadline. Yesh Atid came second to Mr Netanyahu’s right-ring Likud party in March’s inconclusive general election. Mr Lapid faces a challenge to bridge the ideological differences between the parties he can ask to join a coalition. If he fails to secure a majority in the 120-seat parliament, the Knesset, there is a risk of the country having to go to elections for the fifth time in two years. President Rivlin said he had decided to give Mr Lapid a 28-day mandate to form a government after 56 lawmakers expressed support for his candidacy.

HiIndia Newsdesk Taliban insurgents captured a district in northern Afghanistan, forcing government troops to retreat to the provincial capital amid a recent surge in violence, officials said on Wednesday. Fighting has escalated sharply in recent weeks, with Afghan officials saying the Taliban have stepped up their attacks since Washington announced plans last month to pull out all US troops by September 11. The militants seized the district of Barka in the northern province of Baghlan after hours of fighting with Afghan forces, who retreated to the main city, said Jawed Basharat, a spokesman for the provincial police. The Taliban suffered heavy losses in the fighting, he added, but a senior security official who sought anonymity said at least 10 security forces were killed and 16 others captured by the Taliban.

The deaths span three regions and three generations, but in almost all cases there has been a common thread: the arrest of a man they had had a close
HiIndia Newsdesk Drugmakers in India are warning that a halt on some cargo flights from China could imperil an important link in the global pharmaceutical supply chain. The U.S. relies heavily on India to stock its medicine cabinets, and any slowdown in output could leave pharmacies short of drugs used regularly by millions of Americans. On April 26, China’s state-run Sichuan Airlines suspended cargo flights to India for 15 days amid an alarming second Covid-19 outbreak there. China supplies 60% to 70% of the raw materials used by India’s drugmakers, as well as ingredients for finished medicines sent to markets worldwide, according to Mahesh Doshi, national president for the Indian Drug Manufacturers’ Association. If the flights remain on hold, the drug industry fears “cascading effects on its entire supply chain,” Doshi wrote in an April 29 letter to India’s external affairs minister. That could lead to domestic shortages of essential medicines and have a severe impact on exports, she said.
HiIndia Newsdesk Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli rushed to the residence of Sher Bahadur Deuba, the chief of the main Opposition Nepali Congress party, to seek his support in the confidence vote that Oli faces in the House of Representatives on May 10. Deuba and other leaders of his party rejected Oli’s appeal, which came on the same day that the CPN (Maoist Centre) — led by Pushpakamal Dahal “Prachanda” — officially withdrew support to the government, leaving it without a majority in the House. During his first visit to Deuba’s house since he became Prime Minister 38 months ago, Oli is believed to have offered to accommodate the Nepali Congress in the government. “Nepali Congress declined the offer,” a senior leader of the party said. On the same day, Chief Whip of the Maoist Centre, Dev Gurung, handed over a letter to officials at the Parliament Secretariat regarding the party’s withdrawal of support to the government.

Covid first wave left 23 crore poor
HiIndia Newsdesk The first wave of Covid last year pushed the earnings of the families of 23 crore Indians below the national minimum daily wage of Rs 375 suggested by a government-appointed committee, a report released on Wednesday said. The “State of Working India 2021: One year of Covid-19”, released by the Azim Premji University, says the number of people living in households with daily incomes below Rs 375 was 22.62 crore and 7.24 crore in rural and urban areas, respectively, at the start of the outbreak in March 2020.

Bengal Warned Of “Stern Action” In 2nd Home Ministry Letter Over Violence HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: On a day West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was sworn in for a third term after a decisive win against the BJP, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs shot off another letter to the state government asking why it had not written back about measures taken to stop the violence after last month’s elections. “I remind you that no report has been submitted despite my asking for details on post-poll violence on May 3rd. Noncompliance of this second letter would be taken seriously,” Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla said in the second letter dispatched to state government two days after he wrote the first letter.
Police raids to trace wrestler ₹8L cr needed to support Sushil Kumar in murder case lower-income groups during COVID: Report
HiIndia Newsdesk BJP chief JP Nadda has claimed that 80,000 to one lakh people ran away from their homes in face of attack following TMC’s win in the West Bengal Assembly elections. He added that at least 14 BJP workers were killed, women were molested and raped. “Mamata Banerjee’s silence speaks of her involvement. She has blood on her hands,” Nadda alleged.
HiIndia Newsdesk Allahabad High Court has exposed the Uttar Pradesh administration’s claims about the reliability of its Covid information system by demonstrating a mismatch between the government helpline and portal on the availability of hospital beds. It has also described as “a criminal act and not less than a genocide” the state authorities’ failure to supply adequate oxygen to hospitals, shredding chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s steadfast denial of any oxygen crisis. During a virtual hearing on Tuesday, the bench of Justices Siddhartha Varma and Ajit Kumar asked an advocate, Anuj Singh, to call up the Covid helpline number around noon.
HiIndia Newsdesk DELHI POLICE have launched raids to locate top wrestler and two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar for questioning over his alleged role in the murder of a 23-year-old former junior national champion, who was beaten to death in a clash involving two groups on the Chhatrasal stadium premises in North-West Delhi late Tuesday night. “We are probing the role of Sushil Kumar as allegations have been made against him. We sent our team to his house but he was found to be missing. We are looking for him. HiIndia Newsdesk The BCCI stands to lose over Rs 2000 crore of the broadcast and sponsorship money earmarked for this year’s Indian Premier League which was indefinitely postponed on Tuesday due to COVID-19 cases in its bio-bubble. The BCCI was forced to postpone the IPL after multiple cases of COVID-19 among players and support staff emerged from Ahmedabad and New Delhi in the past couple of days. “We would be losing anything between Rs 2000 to Rs 2500 crore for the midway postponement of this season. I would say something in the range of Rs 2200 crore will be closer to accurate estimation,” a senior BCCI official told on conditions of anonymity.

Sharing the pictures, an ecstatic Kulhari, dressed in a yellow sweatshirt and black pants, mentioned, “The first place we stopped for lunch on my first day of the trek. Loved the river, the food… everything about it…Am an absolute foodie and I believe I can conquer the world if fed good food on time.” “Nature is my thing and I haven’t met a soul whose thing it is not … somewhere along the trek … the water was freezing but still I managed to drink it from the smaller waterfalls I saw on the way.. and trust me, the taste of it beats everything u have ever tasted… ” The 35-year-old also revealed that she had a “lovely” companion through the journey. “Someone had our back and we had his. Found this mountain dog at our second campsite and he didn’t leave our side till it was time for a final goodbye at the base #Tullika #Garhwal … Me and him shared a special bond … a bond that’s special to me .. a bond that only knows LOVE in its most pure form … I miss him and I know in my heart he misses me too …,” she wrote alongside some pictures with the dog that she fondly called by her own nickname ‘Guddu’.

id you know that Vidya Balan’s The Dirty Picture was earlier offered to Kangana Ranaut? Well, yes. Kangana Ranaut, while walking down the memor y lane to celebrate 15 years in Bollywood, revealed to the Times of India that she turned down The Dirty Picture because she “failed to see the opportunity” in it. However, little did she know that the film will go on to become Vidya’s best performance in her career. Kangana praised Vidya and said, “I don’t think I would have done it better than Vidya Balan because she was terrific in that. But yes, sometimes I feel that I didn’t see the potential in that film.” The actor added that whatever she is today, is because of the unconventional choices she made over the years. “I was not given anything on the platter. A dialogue in my upcoming film goes, ‘If life gave me an ounce, I gave it back a pound’ and similarly, I made so much from my off-beat films! I became a mainstream star from parallel or off-beat films only,” she said. “I have completely made the most of my opportunities, multiplied the outcome of my opportunities into another proportion altogether. I have never done one of those conventional films of Rajkumar Hirani or Sanjay Leela Bhansali or even Dharma Productions, YRF or any of the Khans’ films. I have done none of that but still, I’m the top leading actress who has made a name for herself. It is a case study on its own. Though I failed to see the opportunity in The Dirty Picture, I don’t regret it,” Kangana concluded.

“Whether I get up on stage or am in front of the camera, I bring myself into character and create a state of mind for myself where I am completely focused on playing my part. I will continue to do my job, which is acting and performing, irrespective of the platform I am honoured with,” says Pankaj Tripathi Whether it is in Gangs of Wasseypur, Sacred Games, Masaan, or Ludo, every character essayed by Pankaj Tripathi leaves a deep impact on the viewers. His on-screen nuances, perfect timing, and the exceptional variety and layers he packs each of his characters with prove his mettle as a true artiste. But, while the actor is content with his journey, he does admit he often misses theatre, as that is where his journey began.
From theatre and films to now OTTs, you’ve come a long way. How would you describe your journey? It’s been a very fulfilling journey. I am humbled and honoured to have received so much love across countries.
You started your career with theatre — something you’re no longer an active part of. Do you miss being on stage?
The stage (of the theatre) will always be very close to my heart. I do miss it, but I also love the kind of variety I can bring with the work I am doing currently doing.
How would you describe the feeling of acting in front of an audience vis-a-vis a camera (theatre vs films/OTT)? And if you had to pick one over the other, which one would you choose?
Both are not very different for me, actually. Whether I am on stage or in front of the camera, I bring myself into the character and create that state of mind for myself where I am completely focused on playing my part. I will continue to do my job, which is acting and performing irrespective of the platform I am honoured with.
The pandemic, however, has put a stop to it all. How has your pandemic experience been — both personally and professionally?
It has been an eye-opening experience, but also a great professional journey. Some of my latest works – Mirzapur season 2, Ludo, Gunjan Saxena, to name a few — released during the time. OTT was one of the few entertainment platforms available to audiences during the lockdown and this has helped expand my reach to new viewers as well. On a personal front, there were moments where I felt that I need to take a pause from work and rethink my journey; to assess if maybe I was working a bit too much. I also tried some self-discovery and exploration in the time that I got over the last year.

Meri khud ki mummy ko Covid ho gaya tha. Mummy ka phone ata tha ki saamne ek uncle hai unki death ho gayi. Mummy roti thi. Mere ko ye darr tha ki mere ko to ye phone nahi aega na. Sunil Grover: So much talent has come forth because of social media
Aditya Chopra has urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, to allow his company to purchase 60,000 COVID-19 vaccines and take care of all the expenses related to the immunisation programme for these workers. ditya Chopra has come forward to vaccinate the daily workers of the entire Hindi film industry. YRF has urged the Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray, to allow the company to purchase 60,000 COVID-19 vaccines and take care of all the expenses related to the immunisation programme for these workers. YRF has sent a letter to the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) stating, “With the film industry going through an unprecedented time, there is an urgent need to restart at the earliest so that thousands of workers can start earning their livelihood again and protect their families. Yash Raj Films, through The Yash Chopra Foundation, would like to offer its support in this regard. We have sent a request to the Honourable Chief Minister of Maharashtra to allocate and allow us to purchase COVID-19 vaccines for 30,000 registered workers, who are members of the film industry’s federation in Mumbai at the earliest.”
Sunil Grover has been making people laugh with his antics as a funnyman on television for years. He has also impressed with the odd serious role, as he did recently in the web series “Tandav”, or the Akshay Kumar-starrer film “Gabbar Is Back”. The advent of social media has been a boon for new-age talent over the recent years and Sunil, too, has benefitted from the platform. “You have to see so much talent has come forth because of social media. Everyone has got a platform to express themselves and people can watch whatever they like,” he said. If the advent of social media and OTT is changing art of storytelling, Sunil noted this is something that happens every few years. From theatre to films to television to social media and OTT now, viewers have proved they can adapt easily. “Change is inevitable. When films started coming, people thought that may be audience for plays would be affected but theatre has continued. Eventually, social media came and now we have OTT. With time, people adapt to evolution,” he said. For him, as an artiste, a variety in platforms means a better chance to experiment, which in turn throws new challenges. “I love taking up challenges. I recently did a show on OTT and the challenge there was that it was a very serious role and I was worried about what if people laugh at that. Of course, it worked for me and I liked the fact that in ‘Tandav’ the audience accepted me as something different. I think what the audience wants is good performance and not anything else. They want to an amount of freshness, too,” he said.

GNDU Vice Chancellor Jaspal Singh Sandhu said the University Grants Commission had granted permission to start courses in 37 universities out of the 981 universities and GNDU is the only public university in the state to have been given this honour to cater to the constant demand of the Punjabi diaspora in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, Europe and parts of Africa.
HiIndia Newsdesk New Delhi: An Indian-origin researcher has warned that billions of computers and other devices across the globe are vulnerable today owing to a vulnerability named ‘Spectre’ that was first discovered in 2018 but is open to hackers again. Since ‘Spectre’ was discovered, the world’s most talented computer scientists from industry and academia have worked on software patches and hardware defenses, confident they’ve been able to protect the most vulnerable points in the speculative execution process without slowing down computing speeds too much. However, researchers, led by Ashish Venkat at the University of Virginia’s School of Engineering and Applied Science, UVA Engineering, discovered that computer processors are open to hackers again. They found a whole new way for hackers to exploit something called a “micro-op cache,” which speeds up computing by storing simple commands and allowing the processor to fetch them quickly and early in the speculative execution process. Micro-op caches have been built into Intel computers manufactured since 2011.

Out of Box Jennifer Gates, the eldest daughter of Bill and Melinda Gates, broke her silence on the divorce of her parents in an Instagram Story. The 25-yearold asked for space and privacy and said that the Gates family was going through a “challenging stretch of time”. Bill and Melinda Gates, who spent decades amassing one of history’s largest fortunes, announced on Monday that they were splitting up after 27 years of marriage. “After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage,” the two said in a brief statement posted on Twitter. “We have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives.” Jennifer Gates’ Instagram Story was posted shortly after the announcement. “By now many of you have heard the news that my parents are separating,” she said in her Instagram Story on Monday, reports People Magazine. “It’s been a challenging stretch of time for our whole family.” “I’m still learning how to best support my own process and emotions as well as family members at this time, and am grateful for the space to do so,” she said. “I won’t personally comment further on anything around the separation, but please know that

wo scuba divers from Florida discovered a mammoth four-foot, 50-pound (23-kg approximately) bone, possibly dating back to the Ice Age, while diving in a local river.

Although her Instagram Story has expired, screenshots of it are circulating on social media. Jennifer Gates graduated from Stanford University in 2018 with a degree in human biology. She announced her engagement to boyfriend Nayel Nassar in January last year. She is the eldest daughter of Bill and Melinda Gates, who command an estimated $146 billion fortune. Bill Gates, 65, is the co-founder of Microsoft. He ranks as the world’s fourth-richest person. Melinda Gates, 56, co-runs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation - one of the largest private foundation in the world that has already given away more than $50 billion. The couple have three children - Jennifer Katherine Gates, 25, Phoebe Adele Gates, 18, and Rory John Gates, 21.

“Once-In-A-Lifetime” Discovery Florida Scuba Divers Find Ice-Age Mammoth Fossil
This is not the first time in the recent past that a mammoth fossil has been discovered. In December, two divers found two Columbian Mammoth tusks in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Venice, while diving. When it comes to residents of Florida, of late they have been witness to a few unusual incidents. A few days ago, a cyclist had a close encounter with two alligators. Brenda Stelzer captured this moment in a video while biking through the nature trail of Bird Rookery Swamp Sanctuary in Naples. The clip shows alligators moving out of her way just in time by jumping into the adjacent stream. In another incident, there was an extremely rare sighting of an all-white baby dolphin. The footage shows three dolphins - one adult and two calves - swimming n the waters along the coast of Florida. One of the three dolphins had an unusual colouration, which some theorised could be caused by albinism - a complete loss of pigmentation that is said to happen in about one out of every 10,000 mammals.

ataša Stanković often shares snippets from her daily routine on social media. While we love her family time pictures with cricketer Hardik Pandya and their son Agastya, we are equally impressed with her simple yet classy fashion choices. Recently, she shared some of her looks and we have been in awe of them. Perfect for summer, they are comfortable and accessible. Nataša kept it simple yet stylish in a pastel look — a pair of high-waisted pants with little slits on the hemline styled with a full-sleeved body-hugging crop top. The look was accessorised with an animal print belt and completed with a baguette and black footwear.
‘Love wins’
Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks celebrate 33 years of marriage One of Hollywood’s most beloved couples, Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks recently celebrated 33 years of marriage on April 30. Wilson shared a picture of both of them in an idyllic setting, twinning in white. “33 years of marriage to my BFF, my lover, my man. Love wins,” Wilson wrote. The story of their marriage goes that the Forest Gump actor nursed a crush on Wilson when he saw her on the sitcom The Brady Bunch. “I was actually at a friend of mine’s house when it aired and I remember thinking ‘that girl’s cute,” Hanks later recollected. That was 1972.Several years later — close to a decade — he met her during the shoot of the sitcom Bosom Buddies. He acted in it and she featured as a guest. The connection was instant. The actor later told People, “Rita and I just looked at each other and— kaboing—that was that. I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn’t be denied.”
‘I’m Vaccinated’
‘It’s often our expectations and perceptions that hurt us’: Ankita The situation, at this point, appears grim and sometimes it may feel like there is no light at the end of the tunnel, but one must always remember, no feeling is final. Ankita Konwar, who is currently in Lonavala, Maharashtra, shared a similar message on Instagram recently. Konwar posted a photo along with a heartfelt caption sharing how it is important to take care of ourselves. In the picture, she donned a camisole top with mauve-pink shorts and basic flats, practising a yoga posture known as ‘Chakrasana’. This pose not only improves your spine posture, but also helps in improving your eyesight and reduces stress. she wrote, “Everything is, as it is”. She explained how our expectations often get the best of us and end us hurting. “Times like these, one is going to feel helpless but the only thing that’s always under our control is our actions and reactions to the situations around us” she wrote. hings right now are beyond our control, all we can do is make sure our action and reactions do not hurt anyone around us because that is the only thing that is in our control. While we are all scared, fear can be one of the worst feelings at this point in time — “Of course we are all scared but fear is one of the worse things you can help spread.” she shared.
Maldives tourism campaign to ensure visitor safety In a bid to welcome more tourists and to assure them of their safety, the island nation of Maldives has launched the ‘I’m Vaccinated’ tourism campaign, which highlights the archipelago’s intentions to have the world’s first fully vaccinated tourism workforce in place. According to a report in The National News, ‘Visit Maldives’ has collaborated with the country’s ministry of tourism for this campaign. The messaging is such that it comes across as attractive for international tourists looking to travel somewhere — that the island archipelago has undertaken some initiatives, which make it one of the safest destinations in the world for tourists. Maldives, at the moment, is accepting tourists with a negative PCR test report, taken less than three days before travel, or those who are fully vaccinated with no quarantine requirements.

ore exercise means less risk of developing severe Covid-19, according to a new study of physical activity and coronavirus hospitalisations. The study, which involved almost 50,000 Californians who developed Covid-19, found that those who had been the most active before falling ill were the least likely to be hospitalised or die as a result of their illness. The data were gathered before Covid vaccines became available and do not suggest that exercise can substitute in any way for immunisation. But they do intimate that regular exercise — whether it’s going for a swim, walk, run or bike ride — can substantially lower our chances of becoming seriously ill if we do become infected. Scientists have known for some time that aerobically fit people are less likely to catch colds and other viral infections and recover more quickly than people who are out of shape, in part because exercise can amplify immune responses. Better fitness also heightens antibody responses to vaccines against flu and

o w e v e r, w e c a n t a k e advantage of this period where our comparatively rapid pace of life has been forced into a slowdown. It can be an opportunity for self-evaluation, personal growth and re-aligning our goals. But, for the thoughts to align themselves properly, the mind must be at peace. Practising meditation is a useful tool that can serve this purpose. Meditation can be a confusing term and to many it might mean spending hours in stillness. Nothing can be further than the truth. At a basic level, it can simply be defined as possessing the ability to bring your attention to the present. Meditation can be practised at any time. But recommend that you practise this in the morning or at night before bedtime. One great way to combine meditation with your fitness regimen is to include it after every workout session.
on a chair is fine!). Close your eyes and focus on your breath. Identify the feeling of breathing as the air enters your body, expands your lungs and finally, observe the process of exhalation. Then gradually start scanning each part of your body from the top of your head to your toes. It’s possible to feel each part of the body when you put your attention on it. This also opens up the possibility to let go of tension and become more internally relaxed and present. Set an alarm on your mobile phone for 3 to 5 minutes when you perform this exercise. Gradually increase the duration with practice.
2. Box breathing: As an extension to your body scan, you can try “box breathing”. This involves counting to a specific number (let’s say 5), while you inhale through your nose. Then hold your breath as you
count up to 5 again. Make sure you are relaxed while holding your breath. And then exhale through your mouth while counting to 5. Repeat this cycle a few times and you will find your mind is automatically focused on your breath.
3. Progressive body scan: In this process, instead of focusing your attention to each body part, try contracting and then relaxing one muscle/muscle group at a time. Working down your body is a great way to unwind.
4 Group activity: Get your friends and family involved. Share insights with each other about how you’ll feel after each session. Practice is only possible if progress is apparent. Sharing thoughts about the feeling of calmness and wellness associated with the practice of meditation will motivate the group. Initially keep each session short (up to 5 minutes) and then with time, increase the duration gradually.

researchers and physicians at Kaiser Permanente Southern California, the University of California, US, and other institutions decided to compare information about how often people exercised with whether they wound up hospitalised this past year because of Covid. Then the researchers crosschecked numbers, with arresting results. People in the least-active group, who almost never exercised, wound up hospitalised because of Covid at twice the rate of people in the most-active group, and were subsequently about two-and-a-half times more likely to die. Even compared to people in the somewhat-active group, they were hospitalised about 20 per cent more often and were about 30 per cent more likely to die. Of course, this study, because it was observational, does not prove that exercise causes severe Covid risks to drop, but only that people who often exercise also are people with low risks of falling gravely ill. The study also did not delve into whether exercise reduces the risk of becoming infected with coronavirus in the first place.
