To date, no variants of high consequence have been identified in the United States,” the CDC said in a statement on Tuesday. The CDC said the Delta variant shows increased transmissibility, potential reduction in neutralisation by some monoclonal antibody treatments under emergency authorisation and potential reduction in neutralization from sera after vaccination in lab tests.

The CDC guidance still calls for wearing masks in crowded indoor settings like buses, planes, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters. In the biggest indication that the United States is fast returning to pre-pandemic life, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has said fully vaccinated people are no longer required to wear masks. The recommendation holds true for both indoors and outdoors, the CDC said. HiIndia Newsdesk Over 5,000 children have tested positive for Covid- 19 between the age group of 0 to 14 years in Meghalaya so far. Seventeen children of the age group 0 to 14 years have succumbed to COVID-19 in the state. The latest incident was reported in the East Garo Hills district where a 4 yrs old girl passed away due to covid related complications. This was informed by the state health minister Alexander Laloo Hek during an interaction with media persons on Wednesday. So far 758 persons have died due to viral infection. Of these, 17 are children between the age group of 0 to 14 years, Hek said. The health minister also informed that

5,101 of 43,254 people, who have tested positive for COVID-19 during the first and second wave, are children belonging to this age group. According to him, not a single newborn baby was affected by COVID-19 so far in the state. He said taking these figures into consideration the government has decided to come up with prefab structures for setting up pediatric hospitals at Ganesh Das hospital in Shillong, Tura in West Garo Hills, and Jowai in West Jaintia Hills. The health minister urged the citizens to be extra careful keeping in mind that the third wave is likely to affect not only children but people of different age groups.

How is the literary scene in Singapore, compared to the rest of the world and India in particular? Damyanti Biswas: I’m too much of a hermit to comment on the literary scene in Singapore, but I’ve read wonderful work from poets like Arthur Yap, Cyril Wong, Felix Cheong, Edwin Thumboo, Madeline Lee, Ng Yi-Sheng. In fiction, I’ve learned a lot from works by Suchen Christine Lim, Catherine Lim, S Rajaratnam, Ovidia Yu, Alfian Sa’at, and also read novels and stories by authors based in Singapore like Lee Chang Rae, Amanda Lee Koe, Clarissa Goenawan, Akshita Nanda, among so many others. The pandemic has affected the literary scene here just as in all other countries --making in-person events difficult to arrange, but there are many promising authors to watch out for. India’s literary scene is far larger, because the country itself is immense,

Although, given the push for literacy and literature by the Singaporean government, and the Singapore Writers Festival that draws luminaries from across the world, the literary scene here promises to remain quite vibrant over the coming years. You are an Indian Diaspora crime writer based in Singapore. Smoggy, smoky Delhi is like a character in your highly acclaimed book. You take the reader to its upscale neighbourhoods and malls, slums and bungalows. How did you manage to get the details of Delhi’s sights, sounds and smells so right? Damyanti Biswas: I’ve lived in Delhi for many years, working in its slums, and more upscale locales. It has changed since then, but not in ways I cannot recognise. I’ve been going back often to volunteer and meet friends, and that has kept me in touch and given me perspective. While writing the final drafts of the novel one winter, I also went back and stayed there in order to conduct intensive and extensive research-- be it in the police stations, the slums, the roads, the eateries, the hospitals. I drove around the city, sat on its footpaths and its eateries, and visited each of the locations to ensure that the scenes were true to life at the time.

A 76-year-old man believed to be the head of the world’s largest family has died in India’s Mizoram state.

Your daily activity level has almost no bearing on the number of calories you burn and burning more energy doesn’t protect against getting fat, Herman Pontzer writes in his new book, “Burn: New Research Blows the Lid Off How We Really Burn Calories, Lose Weight, and Stay Healthy.” “Your brain is very, very, very good at matching how many calories you eat and how many calories you burn,” Pontzer, an associate professor of evolutionary anthropology at Duke University, told. “The person who has a sedentary lifestyle and the person who has the active lifestyle will burn the same number of calories.” What? We’ve all been taught the more you move, the more energy you burn, helping with weight loss. But that’s the wrong view of the human body’s flexible metabolic engine, Pontzer says. All diets work if you stick to them

That’s hard to do, of course. Modern foods are “too delicious” and designed to be overeaten, Pontzer writes. When not sure exactly how much to eat, humans have evolved to err on the side of eating more. But whether you choose low-carb, low-fat, vegan, intermittent fasting, Paleo or Mediterranean, whichever diet allows you to eat fewer calories over the long-term will help you lose weight.

Keep exercising

Pontzer worries that people who are motivated only by weight loss will stop working out. But exercise is critical for making your body stronger and fitter, and for avoiding disease, so it’s important to stay active. “If you want to keep your heart healthy, if you want to keep your mind sharp, if you want to be able to age into your 50s and 60s without kind of falling apart, then you really need exercise in your life and the more the better,” he said

According to Fox News, the American Heart Association presented their first research report on Monday (local time) at a virtual conference, “Scientific Sessions 2020”, during which it shared the findings that the consumption of chilli could help people live longer. Chillies are one of the most common ingredients used in cooking. The red chillies tend to have many regulating properties that give proof of their idealness among various spices. These factors play a role in reducing a person’s risk of dying from cardiovascular disease or cancer, according to the AHA. More than 570,000 health records of people from the US, Italy, China and Iran were included in its study. The candidates who ate chilli peppers regularly had “a 26 per cent relative reduction in cardiovascular mortality; a 23 per cent relative reduction in cancer mortality; and a 25 per cent relative reduction in all-cause mortality”, according to a report by Fox News.

Those who consumed walnuts had a significant reduction in inflammation, measured by the concentration of known inflammatory markers in the blood, which were reduced by up to 11.5 per cent. The study’s conclusion is that the anti-inflammatory effects of walnuts provide a mechanistic explanation for cardiovascular disease reduction beyond cholesterol lowering.

Encouragement is a strong motivator. This can come from friends, family and coach or even from your own online research. Initially factors such as health issues, losing weight, toning up, gaining muscles and just wanting to look good are strong motivators.

Avoid boredom

Routine is boring! If your fitness routine is becoming boring, consult your coach. Set challenges and introduce workouts you have not done before. While continuing with your base fitness programme, try out something new. For example, if you are visiting your gym three days a week, try out kickboxing to supplement your workout. Breaking routine is an important aspect of staying motivated.

Be patient

Consider how long you’ve let your body lie without looking after it. And then to expect results in a month isn’t really fair, is it? Losing weight and toning up takes time and patience. So does building up expertise in a skill-based fitness activity like martial arts. So don’t quit if results are not immediately evident. Give yourself time. The rewards will come.
