Biden says Putin is getting ’exactly what he didn’t want’ HiIndia Newsdesk
Madrid (IANS): US President Joe Biden on Wednesday said Russian President Vladimir Putin is getting ’exactly what he didn’t want’ -- the NATO-zation of Europe, the media reported. Biden praised the diplomatic breakthrough that resulted in Turkey pulling its objections from Sweden and Finland joining the alliance, marking its biggest expansion since the 1990s, the Daily Mail reported. ”Putin was looking for the Finlandization of Europe and we’re going to get the NATO-zation of Europe,” Biden said when he met NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg upon his arrival at NATO headquarters on Wednesday morning. ”And that’s exactly what he did not want to do -- it’s exactly what needs to be

Washington, (IANS): US Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer said that he will officially step down from the bench on Thursday. Breyer, who has served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court since 1994, made the announcement in a letter to President Joe Biden, reports Xinhua news agency. US economy shrank 1.6% in Q1: Commerce Dept HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington, (IANS): The US economy shrank at an annual rate of 1.6 per cent in the first quarter in the third and final estimate, the Commerce Department reported. In the advance estimate released in late April, the decline in real GDP was 1.4 per cent. In the second estimate last month, that was revised to a decrease of 1.5 per cent, reports Xinhua news agency. The GDP data for the first quarter marks the US economy’s first contraction since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. The decrease in real GDP reflected decreases in exports, federal government spending, private inventory investment, and state and local government spending, while imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, increased.
The man suspected to have been driving the truck in which dozens of migrants died during a people smuggling attempt in Texas pretended to be a survivor to try to avoid arrest. Homero Zamorano Jr, 45, was arrested near the scene after he was found hiding in a bush, according to federal prosecutors. The head of Mexico’s National Migration Institute Francisco Garduno said on Wednesday that he ”tried to pass himself off as one of the survivors” when he was detained in San Antonio. Zamorano and a second suspect, Christian Martinez, 28, have both been
charged for their alleged involvement in the deaths of 53 migrants. Martinez was charged with a single count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens, while Zamorano has been charged with one count of alien smuggling resulting in death. If guilty, both face life sentences in prison, or the death penalty, the US Justice Department said. The truck was carrying migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. It was found abandoned on Monday on the outskirts of San Antonio, with officials finding the back door of the truck ajar with “stacks of bodies” inside, many of them hot to the touch. As well as 53 deaths, a further 11 people, including children, remain in hospital. While Zamorano was arrested at the scene, Martinez was detained after investigators linked him to the truck driver through Zamorano’s mobile phone.

Putin still wants to take most of Ukraine - US
HiIndia Newsdesk
Russian President Vladimir Putin still wants to capture most of Ukraine, US intelligence agencies believe. Moscow’s troops have been so weakened by combat, however, that US officials assess they are only capable of making slow territorial gains. It means the war could last for a long time, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines says. In March Moscow refocused its efforts on seizing Ukraine’s Donbas area after failing to take Kyiv and other cities. Mr Putin still has the same goals as the ones he held at the start of the conflict, the US’s top intelligence officer Ms Haines said - to take most of Ukraine. But, she says, Russia is unlikely to achieve that goal any time soon. ”We perceive a disconnect between Putin’s near-term military objectives in this area and his military’s capacity, a kind of mismatch between his ambitions and what the military is able to accomplish,” she told a US Commerce Department conference.

Doctors and bankers were among the hundreds of Sri Lankans who marched on Wednesday to demand that the government resolve a severe fuel shortage at the heart of the worst economic crisis in decades or step down. World Bank chief economist Carmen Reinhart said she is sceptical that the US and global economies can dodge a recession, given spiking inflation, sharp hikes in interest rates and slowing growth in China. Reinhart, who returns to Harvard University on July 1 after a two-year public service leave, said it was historically a tall order to reduce inflation and engineer a soft landing at the same time, and recession risks are clearly a “hot topic” at the moment. “What worries everybody is that all the risks are stacked on the downside,” Reinhart told Reuters in a remote interview, citing a series of adverse shocks and moves by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates after a decade and a half of ultra-low and negative rates.

Eknath Shinde Eknath Shinde Is Chief Minister, Facts About Maharashtra’s BJP Says Fadnavis To Be Deputy New Chief Minister
HiIndia Newsdesk HiIndia Newsdesk
Mr Shinde used to drive an autorickshaw in Thane. He arrived in Mumbai as a teenager from Satara in Maharashtra and joined the Shiv Sena. Mr Shinde rose through the ranks after launching a labour union for the party. He was elected to the Thane Municipal Corporation in 1997. He was tasked by the Shiv Sena to work in Thane, which helped him build a base in the region. Mr Shinde was elected to Maharashtra Assembly in 2004. His position in the Shiv Sena became stronger after party founder Bal Thackeray’s nephew Raj quit and launched Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). His son Shrikant Shinde is a Lok Sabha MP from Kalyan and his brother Prakash Shinde is a Councillor. When the Shiv Sena snapped ties with the BJP after 25 years and fought the election on its own, Mr Shinde became the leader of the opposition in the state Assembly. Shiv Sena’s principal troubleshooter, Mr Shinde completed his Bachelor of Arts from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University.
Mumbai: Shiv Sena rebel Eknath Shinde will be the next Maharashtra Chief Minister and Devendra Fadnavis his deputy, the BJP announced on Thursday, capping the coup that unseated Uddhav Thackeray a day ago with back-to-back curveballs.

T
his is a fight to finish! Finish Shiv Sena. The seeds of this fight were sown in 2014 when BJP and Shiv Sena fought the assembly elections separately and BJP won 122 seats and Shiv Sena 63. They patched up and ruled the state for 5 years. However, they again fought over seat distribution in 2019. This time Shiv Sena was on a weak footing and agreed to fight together. The BJP faltered and in a huge error of judgement faught the elections with Shiv Sena. If BJP had fought alone they could have reached the magical figure of 145 on their own or very near that figure. The BJP won 106 and Shiv Sena won 56. However, Shiv Sena backstabbed BJP and insisted on having their Chief Minister. It was a big loss of face for Amit Shah and Devendra Phadanvis. In this context, they committed the cardinal mistake of believing NCP and faltered again. Sharad Pawar, the master politician and NCP chief played a masterstroke by engineering a split in his own party and putting the Trojan horse- Dada Ajit Pawar with BJP only
to withdraw support once the President rule was lifted and Ajit Pawar was sworn in as Deputy CM. Amit Shah and the BJP never forgot this treachery and backstabbing. It was solemnly pledged that the BJP would have its revenge, which by the way is a dish best served cold. They have plotted for more than 2 years and are now about to form the government with Shiv Sena rebels in Maharashtra. The BJP will most definitely put the last nail in the coffin of Shiv Sena and teach Uddhav Thackeray a lesson. Next in line will be the NCP. Already two of NCP ministers are in jail and more will follow. Not that the BJP is being vindictive. The fact is that most of the politicians are extremely corrupt and till now there was a tacit understanding not to expose each other. The BJP has raised the bar. By providing corruption free government wherever they come to power, the BJP is confident that they can act against the corrupt without any fear of repercussions. On top of it the pro-people policies and schemes like Ujala, Ayushman Bharat, Crop insurance, Direct Beneficiary Transfer of subsidies, Housing for all, Toilets for all, Water and electricity to all households, Mudra loans, Start-up India, Infrastructure development at rapid pace, Atma Nirbhar India, and above all the mantra – Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas has resonated well with the electorate. The BJP is confident that they have the backing of the people and thus take bold decisions. The BJP is a truly oiled election war machine that constantly prepares to gain power by detailed planning and immaculate execution. It has prepared an army of political generals across India who are supported by millions of karyakartas, party apparatus, and trained and aided by RSS and its 36-affiliate organizations. No party can match their dedication, hard work, grassroots outreach, political manipulations, astute planning, and most importantly the will to win at all cost. The days of Shivsena were numbered – the writing in bold letters on the wall. To its credit, BJP tried to accommodate Shivsena but the lust for the CM post was just too much for Uddhav Thackeray. In addition, he was suffering from jealousy and inferiority complex against Narendra Modi.
BJP is in the driver seat but this is not healthy for the Indian democracy as a strong and constructive opposition ensures that absolute power does not corrupt the politicians and they remain accountable to the public. The Shiv Sena tried every trick in the book to avoid the inevitable – from empty threats, vandalizing properties of the rebel leaders, disqualifying MLA’s, going to Supreme court, and more. But, nothing worked and finally Uddhav Thackeray had to resign to avoid the insult and humiliation of losing the floor test mandated by the Governor and upheld by the Supreme Court. BJP is now set to form the Government and Mr. Devendra Phadanvis will again be the Chief Minister with Mr. Eknath Shinde as his deputy CM. BJP regaining power in Maharashtra by finishing the Shivsena this time will help it to not only to win Mumbai municipality elections but in 2024 Loksabha elections, it will secure at least 12 more seats from Maharashtra. It is widely speculated that Eknath Shinde will eventually be the President of Shiv Sena and the Thackerays will be sidelined. After operation Maharashtra, the next low hanging fruit is Jharkhand followed by Rajasthan. Not only is Bharat becoming Congress Mukta but also SP, BSP, Shivsena, JMM, RJD, and many small family parties are set to become powerless in the near future. BJP is in the driver seat but this is not healthy for the Indian democracy as a strong and constructive opposition ensures that absolute power does not corrupt the politicians and they remain accountable to the public. However, in the short term, Maharashtra is just the beginning of the realignment in the vast political canvas of India.

US President Biden suspends rules limiting immigrant arrest, deportation HiIndia Newsdesk
Boston The Biden administration, reacting to a federal court ruling in Texas, has suspended an order that had focused resources for the arrest and deportation of immigrants on those who are considered a threat to public safety and national security. The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement on Saturday it will abide by the decision issued this month, even though it “strongly disagrees” and is appealing it. Immigrant advocates and experts on Monday said the suspension of Biden’s order will only sow fear among immigrant communities. Many living in the country illegally will now be afraid to leave their homes out of concern they’ll be detained, even if they’re otherwise law-abiding, said Steve Yale-Loehr, an immigration law professor at Cornell University. Prioritising whom to arrest and deport
is a necessity, he said. “We simply don’t have enough ICE agents to pick up and put into proceedings everyone who violates our immigration law,” YaleLoehr said. The Texas case centers around a memorandum Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, issued last September, directing immigration

The international launch of two books on the Indian Prime Minister was recently organized by the NID Foundation at the City of Chicago. Titled, ‘Vishwa Sadbhavana,’ the event also saw Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Indian Ambassador to the US saying that PM Modi has encouraged entire India to dream big and has shown the world that dreams can be achieved if pursued with determination and
persistence. The event also saw eminent people from the Indian community ranging from various genres such as entrepreneurs, corporate heads, US Senate members, academicians, spiritual leaders as well as US Senator Ron Johnson. Also in attendance was Indian spiritual guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Speaker of Wisconsin State Assembly Robin Vis, and chief patron, NID foundation and chancellor S Satnam Singh Sandhu amongst many others.
agencies to focus their enforcement efforts on those who represented a threat to national security or public safety or who recently entered the US illegally. The appro ach was a dep ar ture from President Donald Trump’s administration, when immigration agencies were given wide latitude on whom to arrest, detain and deport, prompting many immigrants without legal status to upend their daily routines to evade detection, such as avoiding driving or even taking sanctuary in churches and other places generally off limits to immigration authorities. But on June 10, US District Judge Drew Tipton in southern Texas voided Mayorkas’ memo, siding with Republican state officials in Texas and Louisiana who argued the Biden administration did not have the authority to issue such a directive. In response, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers will make enforcement decisions on “a caseby-case basis in a professional and responsible manner, informed by their experience as law enforcement officials and in a way that best protects against the greatest threats to the homeland,” the Department of Homeland Security said in its statement Saturday.
Washington: A federal grand jury on Monday convicted a New Yorker of importing illegal controlled substances from India and money-laundering, a US attorney said. Ezhil Sezhian Kamaldoss, from Queens in New York, faces up to 50 years of imprisonment. “The defendant is now a convicted drug dealer. He lined his pockets off the black-market sales of millions of illegal opioids and misbranded prescription pills without regard for the harm caused by the abuse of these highly addictive and dangerous drugs,” United States Attorney Breon Peace stated. “With today’s verdict, the defendant is held accountable for having a hand in every aspect of his pill mill, from the importing of unapproved medications
from India to personally filling orders for these drugs for customers throughout the country,” he said. According to federal prosecutors, between May 2018 and August 2019, Kamaldoss participated with others in a transnational drug-trafficking conspirac y, which involved the importation of misbranded prescription drugs, including Tramadol, a synthetic opioid, into the US from India, repackaging the drugs at a pill mill operating out of a warehouse in Jamaica, Queens, and shipping the drugs via the United States mail to customers throughout the US. During the course of the charged conspiracy, Kamaldoss and the men who worked for him distributed millions of Tramadol pills, sometimes purchasing hundreds of thousands of pills at a time. +Additionally, Kamaldoss conspired to launder the proceeds of the drugtrafficking operation by using the illicit profits to reinvest in the business, including by paying shipping costs incurred by his co-conspirators— including nearly USD 200,000 in Federal Express costs paid off in exchange for additional pills, it said.
PM Modi addresses Indian diaspora at Munich, lays out roadmap for next 25 years HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi: A day ahead of his scheduled address at the G7 summit in Germany and bilateral meetings, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Indian diaspora at Munich. Laying out a plan for next 25 years, he spoke about existing government schemes and mentioned how democracy was crushed during Emergency on this day in 1975. Terming Emergency as a “black spot on our democratic history”, he said democratic traditions responded to it, in an obvious reference to the humiliating electoral loss of Indira Gandhi in 1977. “We Indians are proud of our democracy. Today, we can
proudly say India is the mother of democracy,” the PM said, adding that diversity of culture, food, clothes, music and traditions makes our democracy vibrant. “India has shown that democracy can deliver and has delivered,” he said. Talking about the change, he said, the “chalta hai” (status quoist) attitude has been shed. “Our slogan is we have to do and do it on time. The target was to have 40% of power from non-fossil fuels by 2030, we have already met the target in 2022,” the PM said. “Today, every village is open defecationfree and has electricity. Almost 99% of villages have clean cooking fuel. India is providing free ration to 80 crore poor for the past two years,” he asserted.

Julio Ribeiro writes: Shiv Sena without a Thackeray at the helm will not be the same
Before he breathed his last, the pater familias of the Shiv Sena, Balasaheb Thackeray, addressed a mammoth meeting at the iconic Shivaji Park in Dadar. He appealed to the multitude of his followers to look after his son, Uddhav, and grandson Aaditya, after his death. B
efore he breathed his last, the pater familias of the Shiv Sena, Balasaheb Thackeray, addressed a mammoth meeting at the iconic Shivaji Park in Dadar. He appealed to the multitude of his followers to look after his son, Uddhav, and grandson Aaditya, after his death. It was an emotional appeal that palpably moved the mass of humanity stretched out on the open ground before him. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Supreme Leader wanted Uddhav to be his successor, followed by Aditya. But Uddhav is not Balasaheb. His style of functioning is different: He relies on a coterie of close confidants for advice and execution. But in one core issue, he has been a carbon copy of his father: Uddhav made no bones about his resolve to see his young son, Aaditya, succeed him as the Supreme Leader of the Sena and, of course, chief minister of Maharashtra. That was his Achilles’ heel. When the Sena abandoned its decades-old alliance with the BJP to achieve its dream of leading the government in Maharashtra, it joined hands with Sharad Pawar’s NCP and its old bête noire, the Congress, so that Uddhav could become the CM. I am not very sure that Uddhav wanted the job. He would have been happy to install his then 28-year-old son as CM but better counsel prevailed, besides the urgings of his new bedfellows, to assume command himself. Aaditya is a young man with ideas and the right inclinations. But he was in a hurry. If he had started from somewhere near the bottom of the ladder and worked his way up, he would have climbed to the very top in quick time. He had it in him to do so. But he started virtually as the number two in the party and that was bound to upset other leaders. An aspirant for the “gaddi”, Eknath Shinde, was particularly mortified. He bided his time and that time coincided with the plans of the BJP’s master strategist in the state, former CM Devendra Fadnavis, who felt robbed of his rightful entitlement. His party had fought the elections jointly with the Sena. The
Courtsy : The Indian Express
alliance won, but only, it seemed, to be tricked into subservience by Sharad Pawar. Fadnavis was out for revenge from day one, but his initial attempts failed. The ED allegedly became the main instrument to bring Sainiks in line. The very mention of its name was enough to strike fear into the hearts and the minds of the great Shivaji Maharaj’s 21st-century soldiers. Many (or perhaps most) had a skeleton or two to hide from the ED’s gaze. They implored their leader to sever ties with the NCP and Congress and realign with the BJP to avoid the attention of the central investigation agencies. The cognoscenti feel that this is the real reason for the present en masse desertion. That’s possible, even probable. Another reason is being advanced for the revolt of the Sena legislators. They feel that the NCP and Congress have got all the lucrative portfolios in the cabinet, leaving the crumbs for the Sena. They say Uddhav has compromised on this to occupy the CM’s chair. They also complain that NCP and Congress MLAs get their MLA funds, as well as access to the CM, much quicker than they do. The CM is not easily accessible to them and that affects their standing in their constituencies. The Sena MLAs are thinking of the next elections to the state assembly. They feel that the NCP and Congress will have stolen a march over them because of the preferential treatment they have enjoyed. All these peeves have been highlighted during their revolt. The BJP virtually rode on the Sena’s back to first become relevant in Maharashtra and then to gain ascendancy over the party. When its tally of legislators overtook the Sena’s, the chief minister’s mantle passed on to the saffron party. When Fadnavis was the CM there seemed to be less corruption and better governance. But the dominant Marathas were not happy. The Shiv Sena’s founding family belongs to the forward Kayastha caste but its followers, almost to a man, belong to the OBC category and are largely from the Konkan region. There is no doubt that
Balasaheb’s methods “coaxed” central government agencies like the nationalised banks, the Railways, Air India, and the Airports Authority to employ more Maharashtrians in their offices. That was the secret of the rise of the Sena, mainly in Mumbai. The foot soldiers of the Sena, even after Shinde’s revolt, are with the Thackerays. They are, currently, reeling from the shock. It is to be seen how they react when the full import of what will happen if the Thackerays cease to head the Sena kicks in. A Sena without a Thackeray at the helm will not be the same. The process of disintegration will begin. The street vendors and a lot of those who operate Mumbai’s underbelly are known to have the blessings of the Thackerays. Many of these young men, hailing from what the Marxists term the “lumpen proletariat”, will be forced to find new moorings. Eknath Shinde may not last long as the Sena’s head. There are bound to be other claimants with the same ambition and equal talent. For instance, Narayan Rane, who has joined the BJP, would surely aspire for individual recognition. In short, the churn within the Sena’s rank-and-file is going to be short, but sharp and eventful. Many of the Sena’s karyakartas could join the BJP, especially if they anticipate the ED proceeding against them. Many more will join the NCP, whose ethos is similar. Ideology is unlikely to be a significant factor in taking sides. They were never guided by Hindutva, as is now being propagated by Eknath Shinde. It is self-interest and the good life that matters to them. They will balance the pros and cons and decide what is best for them. But the Sena, as Balasaheb envisaged it — a medium to channelise the aspirations of lower-middle-class Maharashtrians to middle-class status — may have to be buried if the Thackeray clan is not around. I grieve for Aaditya Thackeray. He is probably the reason why this revolt is happening. He could have been a good influence on the ordinary Sainiks as his thinking was modern – something most readers and I can relate to.

In a conversation with IANS, Pankaj said: ”If there was no OTT, then there would have been a fight still going on with me. I wouldn’t have got any reach. OTT only gave me space because there is importance of content and stories and not actors that much.” He credits his popularity to the web space. ”Whatever I am, it is because of my stories and the characters that I have played. I am a very small person but my characters and stories are very big... The growth that I have had is all because of OTT,” he added. Pankaj’s latest release is ’Sherdil: The Pilibhit Saga’, which hit the big screen on June 24. He will next be seen in ’Fukrey 3’.

It a different take on William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors
Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor announce pregnancy
Rohit Shetty on Cirkus
F
ilmmaker Rohit Shetty says in his upcoming film Cirkus he has tried to present William Shakespeare’s classic play The Comedy of Errors in a unique way. Over the years, the Shakespearean comedy, revolving around two sets of identical twins, has been adapted by many Indian filmmakers with Kishore Kumar-led Do Dooni Chaar (1968) and Gulzar’s directorial venture Angoor (1982) being the most celebrated ones. Rohit Shetty said Cirkus, starring Ranveer Singh in the lead roles, is nowhere close to the previous film versions of the play. “There have been many versions of The Comedy of Errors. In Bengali cinema, it was made as a black and white film, then Do Dooni Chaar with Kishore Kumar. So, it has changed a lot over the years. Our film is a different take,” Shetty told PTI in an interview. The 49-year-old filmmaker added that Cirkus is a “happy, cool, breezy film” much like his blockbuster comedies Golmaal and All the Best.

After playing a carefree lover boy in Ludo (2020), it’s guns and gore for Aditya Roy Kapur in Om: The Battle Within. Even though he was coming from the charming world of an Anurag Basu film, the universe of the actioner drew him in immediately. He attributes it to the film’s strong emotional anchor. “For an action movie, it has a lot of heart,” he says. “It is about a family’s trials and tribulations. It doesn’t feel like I have departed from emotions, and landed in an action bonanza. The film has to have more because it’s the emotional core that makes people care for the characters.” Prepping for Kapil Verma’s directorial venture was a demanding affair. Over four months, the actor underwent gun training, blade training and picked up the basics of different forms of martial arts. “It wasn’t just about going to the gym and developing my physique. Here, I had to learn action. The gruelling work is what I signed up for. In Om, I had to get into the psyche of a man who puts everything on the line. My father was in the army, so I grew up listening to his stories. [I borrowed from there] to understand the mind of the protagonist.”

New York Gun Law Overturned By U.S. Supreme Court HiIndia Newsdesk
NEW YORK CITY — The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned a New York law that limits people from carrying concealed handguns — a major victory for gun-rights advocates that local leaders fear could cause firearms to flood the city’s streets. The 6-3 decision, with an opinion by Justice Clarence Thomas, ruled that the state’s restrictions violate the Second Amendment. The ruling had been largely expected ever since the majority-conservative court heard arguments in November, with most justices appearing skeptical of the state’s century-old law. The law forces anyone seeking to carry a gun outside their home to go through an extensive review process that requires them to prove they have some extra need to do so — for example, working as a security guard, as THE CITY reported this month.

Is intermittent fasting any good for
weight loss?
No studies have yet shown intermittent fasting to be any better than conventional diets. Also, intermittent fasting reduces the amount you eat, but it reduces the amount of physical activity we do
I
f you’re someone who’s thought about losing weight or has wanted to get healthier in the past few years, you’ve probably come across these two words: intermittent fasting. From celebrities to fitness enthusiasts, intermittent fasting has many thousands of loyal advocates online, claiming this way of eating has helped them lose weight better than other diet methods have. It’s easy to see the appeal of intermittent fasting as a weight loss method. Not only is it simple, it’s also flexible, can be adapted easily to every person, and doesn’t require you to eliminate foods or count calories. But despite its popularity, intermittent fasting may not actually be better than other diet methods when it comes to weight loss. To date, numerous studies have shown intermittent fasting is as good as counting calories when it comes to weight loss including a recent study, which tracked participants for more than a year. This has even been shown with many different types of intermittent fasting, including alternate-day fasting (where you fast or restrict calories every other day), 5:2 dieting (eating normally five days a week, then fasting or restricting calories for two days) and time-restricted eating (where you eat all of your days calories within a set time window, such as only eating during an eight hour window, then fasting for 16 hours). But no studies have yet shown intermittent fasting to
Nearly 1 in 5 American adults report having long Covid
Washington, June 24 (IANS) Nearly one out of five adults in the US who previously had Covid-19 now report having symptoms of long COVID, according to new data revealed by the government. The data published was sourced through the “Household Pulse Survey” conducted by the US Census Bureau and the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), reports Xinhua news agency. The NCHS began asking about the presence of long Covid at the start of June. Out of the over 62,000 adults surveyed, about 40 per cent said they had previous Covid-19 infection. Among them, 19 per cent said they were currently experiencing symptoms of long Covid. Of the general population, one out of 13 or 7.5 per cent of US adults reported having symptoms of long Covid that lasted three or more months after their initial infection, according to the survey.
be any better than conventional diets. Intermittent fasting reduces the amount you eat, but it may have a downside. It both reduces the amount of physical activity we do, and reduces how hard we push during exercise. This is true regardless of the type of intermittent fasting you do. This suggests that when calorie intake is substantially reduced even for a short period of time the body adapts by reducing the number of calories used during exercise. Researchers aren’t entirely sure why this happens, however. While this may not necessarily affect weight loss, lower physical activity levels can have other negative effects on health. For example, a recent alternate-day fasting study found that even just three weeks of this diet reduced physical activity levels and led to a greater loss of muscle mass than a daily calorie restriction diet. The fasting diet was also less effective than daily calorie restriction for fat loss. Muscle mass is crucial for many reasons, including regulating blood sugar levels and staying physically able as we get older. So diets that cause muscle loss are best avoided. However, combining intermittent fasting with exercise programmes such as resistance training may help people better maintain lean muscle mass while encouraging fat loss.
Are there other benefits to fasting? While intermittent fasting might not be a miracle solution when it comes to weight loss, that doesn’t mean it might not still have other health benefits. A recent review on intermittent fasting found that it improved blood pressure, insulin sensitivity (how effectively the body regulates blood sugar) and lowered cholesterol levels to a similar extent as daily calorie restriction. It is likely this effect is due to weight loss. But since few studies have followed participants for longer than a year, it’s hard to know whether these effects persist. Some research also suggests how you fast may also be key. A number of studies have shown promising results from early time-restricted eating, which involves eating all your day’s calories in the early part of the day and fasting in the evening, usually from 4pm onwards. Eating early in the day aligns food intake with our natural circadian rhythms, which means nutrients are processed more efficiently. Early time-restricted eating has also been shown to improve several markers of health, such as insulin sensitivity, which is a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes. These improvements were even seen without weight loss.
Federal appeals court puts FDA ban on Juul e-cigarette sales on hold
The temporary freeze on the FDA order lasts at least until July 12, according to the court’s scheduling order.
A
U.S. federal appeals court on Friday put on hold the Food and Drug Administration’s ban on sales of Juul Labs Inc’s e-cigarettes, after the company appealed the health agency’s order and said the ban would cause it “irreparable harm.” The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District Of Columbia Circuit said the purpose of the stay was to allow the court sufficient time to consider Juul’s briefing for an emergency review and not a ruling on the merits of that motion. The once red-hot vape company has also been working with its legal advisers on options that include a possible bankruptcy filing if it is unable to get relief from the government’s ban, the Wall Street Journal
reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Juul’s counsel Kirkland & Ellis is advising on the contingency plans, according to the report. The FDA said on Thursday Juul failed to show the sale of its products would be appropriate for public health, following a nearly two-year-long review of data provided by the company. Juul, partly owned by tobacco giant Altria Group Inc, said it disagreed with the agency’s findings. The temporary freeze on the FDA order lasts at least until July 12, according to the court’s scheduling order. The pause gives Juul time to argue for why the order should be placed on hold for a longer amount of time pending the court’s review of it. The D.C. Circuit can extend the pause on the agency’s order, or it can let the order take effect while Juul’s appeal is pending.

India are currently 2-1 up in a fivematch series following a 157-run win at the Oval but are now set to face a revitalised England side likely to feature only four survivors at most from that match -- Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Bairstow and James Anderson -- later this week. “Regardless of the opposition, we’re still going to have the same mindset,” Stokes told reporters after stumps in Leeds on Monday. A first series under the new leadership duo of Stokes and redball head coach Brendon McCullum, a former New Zealand captain, ended with an emphatic seven-wicket win in Leeds on Monday that sealed a 3-0 triumph over the Black Caps. England, however, have just a few days to savour their success before facing India at Edgbaston in a match starting Friday. The fifth Test was rescheduled after the fixture was postponed last September following a Covid outbreak

Former pacer Tanvir Ahmed has slammed Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja, saying that the 59-year-old has followed in the footsteps of his predecessors and has done nothing for the betterment of the sport in the country. Pakistan are currently fifth, third, and third in the ICC Test, ODI and T20I rankings respectively. The Babar Azam-led side
also reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in the UAE last year, but lost to Australia. Tanvir Ahmed feels that the team selection and hirings within PCB are still not based on merit. “It’s been around 8-9 months since Ramiz Raja came (and took charge of the PCB). Tell me one good thing (he) has done so far as the chairman. The criteria of team selection and hirings within the PCB are still not based on merit,” Tanvir Ahmed said in a video on his YouTube channel. The 43-year-old said that he had high hopes when Raja was appointed as the PCB chairman last year, but the issues haven’t been addressed so far. “When Ramiz Raja was elected as the PCB chairman, I thought that things will improve but that has not been the case so far. But he is also like his predecessors who is passing time and enjoying his stint,” he added.

The G7 joint statement released yesterday said that the countries are committed to open public debate, independent and pluralistic media and the free flow of information online and offline, fostering legitimacy, transparency, responsibility and accountability for citizens and elected representatives alike. Earlier, a body of digital news media organisations had condemned Mr Zubair’s arrest and asked the Delhi Police to withdraw the case against him immediately.

The world’s most livable city The summary report said, “In 2022, relaxed covid-19 restrictions in some parts of the world led to big shifts across the index, with one city claiming top place again” Vienna has made a successful comeback — it has once again been named the ‘most livable city’ in the world. According to the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) Global Liveability Index — which examined 173 cities in the world — the Austrian capital reclaimed its title from New Zealand’s Auckland, which dropped to 34th spot on the rankings this year owing to pandemic restrictions. “In 2022, relaxed covid-19 restrictions in some parts of the world led to big shifts across the index, with one city claiming top place again,” the summary report read. Notably, Vienna was on the 12th spot in 2021 owing to the closure of its restaurants and museums following pandemic restrictions. Located on the Danube river, the capital city scored a 99.1 on the list. Close behind, on the second spot, was Copenhagen, Denmark’s capital, with 98 points on the list.

Should diabetics have jackfruit Jackfruit is packed with vitamins A and C, riboflavin, magnesium, potassium, copper, manganese, and antioxidants. It has a medium glycemic index (GI) of about 50–60 on a scale of 100, said Dr Jinal Patel, dietitian, Apollo Spectra Hospital, Mumbai. “But, diabetics should ideally have raw jackfruit that has a low glycemic load and can help them to balance their blood sugar levels. Diabetic people should even eat raw jackfruit in moderation. Half a cup, around 75 grams, of jackfruit has a fair amount of fibre which will help you meet the body’s daily recommendation — making it the ideal quantity for diabetics,” she suggested, adding that raw jackfruit is a better option for diabetics “as compared to the cooked variety as it has low sugar content and is low in calories. But, one needs to keep an eye on the sugar levels after having it. One should also not consume jackfruit before and after any surgeries, Dr Jinal stressed. “Also, it should be avoided if you have kidney issues, such as chronic kidney disease or acute kidney failure, since the potassium in jackfruit causes the buildup of potassium in the blood, leading to a condition called hyperkalemia
