Will Use Force As “Last Resort” To Prevent Iranian Nuclear Weapons: Biden
Man charged with raping Ohio girl, 10, who was denied abortion
HiIndia Newsdesk
Los Angeles, July 14 (IANS) The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an emergency use authorisation (EUA) for the Novavax Covid-19 vaccine in individuals 18 years of age and older. The Novavax vaccine will be available as two-dose primary series for adults, three weeks apart, Xinhua news agency reported. The known and potential benefits of the vaccine outweigh its known and potential risks in people 18 years of age and older, and the vaccine may be effective in preventing Covid-19, said the FDA in a statement.
US inflation reached a new 40-year high in June of 9.1% HiIndia Newsdesk
Surging prices for gas, food and rent catapulted US inflation to a new four-decade peak in June, further pressuring households and likely sealing the case for another large interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve, with higher borrowing costs to follow. Consumer prices soared 9.1% compared with a year earlier, the government said Wednesday, the biggest 12-month increase since 1981, and up from an 8.6% jump in May. . The ongoing price increases underscore the brutal impact that inflation has inflicted on many families, with the costs of necessities, in particular, rising much faster than average incomes.

Biden said he would keep Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the U.S. Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) list even if that killed off the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. HiIndia Newsdesk
Washington: U.S. President Joe Biden said he would use force as a last resort to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon as he began a trip to the Middle East. Speaking in an interview with Israel’s Channel 12 TV that was recorded before he left Washington on Tuesday but aired on Wednesday, Biden said he would keep Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the U.S. Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) list even if that killed off the 2015 Iran nuclear
deal. Asked if his past statements that he would prevent Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon meant he would use force against Iran, Biden replied: “If that was the last resort, yes.” Iran denies it seeks nuclear weapons, saying that its nuclear program is for solely peaceful purposes. Negotiators appeared close to a new deal in March, but talks broke down largely because of U.S. refusal of Tehran’s demand that Washington remove the IRGC from the terrorism list, arguing this was outside the scope of reviving the pact.
White House: Iran set to deliver armed drones to Russia
HiIndia Newsdesk
The White House on Monday said it believes Russia is turning to Iran to provide it with “hundreds” of unmanned aerial vehicles, including weapons-capable drones, for use in its
ongoing war in Ukraine. US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said it was unclear whether Iran had already provided any of the unmanned systems to Russia, but said the US has “information” that indicates Iran is preparing to train Russian forces to use them as soon as this month. “Our information indicates that the Iranian government is preparing to provide Russia with up to several hundred UAVs, including weaponscapable UAVs on an expedited timeline,” he told reporters Monday.

A man in the US state of Ohio has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who had to cross state lines for an abortion after her home state restricted the procedure.
Gershon Fuentes, 27, appeared in court in Columbus on Wednesday. The unnamed girl’s plight has drawn international attention. US President Joe Biden cited it at the White House as he slammed abortion restrictions, but sceptics had questioned if it was a hoax. In a speech last Friday condemning that ruling, President Biden raised a report of the child’s case, angrily saying: “Imagine being that little girl!” Hours after the Supreme Court decision, legislators in Ohio outlawed abortions after six weeks, with no exceptions for victims of rape or incest. The child was six weeks and three days pregnant, according to the Indianapolis Star newspaper. Referred by a child abuse doctor in Ohio, the girl visited a clinic in Indianapolis, Indiana, to undergo a medical abortion on 30 June. Although efforts are under way to restrict abortion access in Ohio’s neighbouring state, the procedure still remains legal there.

The U.S. Air Force successfully tested a Lockheed Martin Corp hypersonic missile this week, sources familiar with the efforts said on Wednesday, amid growing concerns Russia and China have had more success developing their own hypersonic weapons. The U.S. Air Force successfully tested its Air-Launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW) booster on Tuesday off the California coast, according to the sources. The ARRW is carried aloft under the wing of plane before it is launched toward its target. In previous tests, the weapon did not detach from the plane. Hypersonic weapons travel in the upper atmosphere at speeds of more than five times the speed of sound, or about 6,200 km per hour.

Cut in tax on petrol, diesel will cost Maharashtra government Rs. 6,000 crore a year, but bring down inflation, says Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
Mumbai: Petrol will now cost Rs. 5 less and diesel Rs. 3 less in Maharashtra as the state cabinet decided today. This means that, from tomorrow, petrol will cost around Rs. 106 a litre and diesel Rs. 94 in Mumbai. Slight variations are possible as there are other components at play when oil companies set the daily price. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the cut in Value Added Tax (VAT) will cost the state Rs. 6,000 crore a year, but it will bring down overall inflation. The decision is as political as it is financial — the new government was formed just two weeks ago after Eknath Shinde led a mutiny in the Shiv Sena that displaced Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government. Soon after proving majority in the assembly, Mr Shinde had announced last week that VAT on fuel would be reduced.

The US two-year yields, which reflect short-term interest rate expectations, rose to 3.121 per cent, just off an overnight four-week high, increasing the gap with the longer-term benchmark 10-year yields, which were at 2.9558 per cent, according to Reuters. A decline in yields on longer-term debt below yields on the short-term debt of the same credit quality is referred to as an inverted yield curve. The inverted curve, also known as a negative yield curve, has previously proven to be a relatively reliable lead predictor of a recession. The so-called yield curve inversion, when short-dated interest rates are higher than longer ones, is commonly seen as an indicator of a recession, and the gap between the two touched 25 basis points in early Asia, which is the difference between 75 basis points and a 100 basis points Fed rate hike. One of the US bond market’s most widely watched indicators of potential recession risk has reached levels last seen in 2007; Bloomberg reported and added that the Treasury curve inversion level was last seen in 2007, just before the global financial crisis. Carlos Casanova, a senior economist at UBP, told Reuters that a recession in the US would mean less demand for Asian exports, with investors turning more “risk off ” and moving money out of emerging markets, and forcing Asian central banks to raise rates themselves to avoid too currency depreciation.

he 6.5-metre tall fully handcrafted National Emblem of India on the roof of the new Parliament building, weighing 16,000 kg, is made of high purity bronze. There is no other similar depiction of the emblem, from the perspective of material and craftsmanship, anywhere else in India. Over 100 artisans from various parts of the country tirelessly worked on the design, crafting and casting of the emblem for over six months to bring out the quality that could be seen in the final installation. The installation itself was a challenge as it was 32 metres above the upper ground level. Giving wings to the ambition of creating such an expression of the emblem needed dedication, meticulous supervision, and skilful installation -- all depicting various elements of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’. When seated on the top of the temple of our democracy - the Parliament building - it truly represents the paradigm of ‘for the people, by the people’.

Wax tubes, which provide ducts for pouring bronze during casting and vents for the gases produced in the process, are fitted to the outside of the wax shell. Gap Inc. has announced that president and chief executive officer Sonia Syngal will step down from her position and from the company’s Board, departing the company following a brief transition. San Francisco, (IANS): Gap Inc. has announced that president and chief executive officer Sonia Syngal will step down from her position and from the company’s Board, departing the company following a brief transition. Effective immediately, Bob Martin, the company’s current executive chairman of the Board, will serve as Gap Inc. president and chief executive officer on an interim basis. Mayo Shattuck will continue to serve as lead independent director. Bob Martin is a 40-year industry veteran with extensive retail experience at corporations including Dillard’s Inc. and Walmart where he served as CEO of its International division. The company is expecting net sales in the second quarter fiscal 2022 to decline in the approximately highsingle digit range, relatively in-line with its prior expectations, Gap said. The company continues to navigate margin headwinds and, as previously communicated, still expects to incur an estimated $50 million of transitory incremental air freight expense in the quarter as well as inflationary costs on raw materials and freight.
Our country faces huge challenges, the most serious for a generation. And the decisions we make today will decide whether the next generation of British people will also have the chance of a better future But the public liking for him was dented when this year he introduced taxes to reduce the government’s heavy borrowings. This was followed by controversy over his wife avoiding paying taxes in Britain and instead doing so at a lower rate in India from her dividends from shares in Infosys, the Bangalore-based software giant founded by her father N.R. Narayana Murthy. Sunak was then accused of retaining his Green Card in the US, where he had studied and worked. It will not be surprising if his opponents in the upcoming competition cite his wife’s matter and the Green Card issue against him. The son of a medical practitioner is, however, still one of the favourites in the contest, with probably Ben Wallace, the Defence Secretary, the current favourite. Sunak resigned as chancellor on Tuesday, highlighting ideological and policy differences with Johnson. But also saying in his resignation letter that “the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously”.

Colombo: Sri Lanka declared a state of emergency today as massive protests engulfed Colombo after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa flew to the Maldives following months of protests against an economic crisis.
Teargas shells were fired as thousands of people mobbed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office and pushed against the gates of the Lankan parliament. His choice of being a part of the show is no different. Reacting to the response to the recently released Netflix show, the actor said, ”It’s the disruptive nature of the concept and the format that people have really taken to. Though my intention is never to disrupt or be disruptive,
I just happen to make authentic choices and they happen to be disruptive choices; whether it’s in my choice of films, the characters I create.” The show iscurrently available to stream on OTT platform Netflix. Ranveer further shared how he analysed that the show consists of ’Navaras’, ”I remember, instinctively reacting to it in the room telling the Banijay and Netflix teams that this is there because it’s got all the Navaras. I’m up anytime for a comedy show or film Archana Puran Singh TV personality and actress Archana Puran Singh, who is now seen as a judge along with Shekhar Suman on ’India’s Laughter Champion’ (ILC), talked about her journey on ’The Kapil Sharma Show’, why she accepted the opportunity to judge ILC, and how she finds her co-judge Shekhar Suman. On the reason for saying yes to ILC, Singh told IANS: ”I am up for a comedy show or film anytime. When ILC was offered to me it did delay my long-standing holiday plans but it was too tempting to refuse, since it put me in a chair as a judge, something which I haven’t done since Comedy Circus.” She said further: ”I enjoy witnessing the spectacular comic stand-up talents of our country. It is a genre which is both exciting and dynamic and like I said, judging a show of this kind is a high of sorts for a comedy junkie like me.” Kapil Sharma was often seen teasing Archana on TKSS for not going to the US with the team. She clarified: ”There was never any plan of me going for the US tour. When Kapil announced his tour dates, I had planned a UK holiday with my family. But would Kapil and team ever let go of the opportunity to ’make up a fact’ to create humour?”Kapil that for sure our relationship has to be from another life time.
Actress Mrunal Thakur, who is making her debut in south Indian cinema through Hanu Raghavapudi’s ’Sita Ramam’ opposite Dulquer Salmaan, says that working in the film has helped her to start learning and understanding a new language. Mrunal, who does not know Telugu or Tamil, says it took her four to five days to adapt to the language on the sets. Says Mrunal, ”I recall this one incident where the team met in Hyderabad: I come from a Marathi background and Dulquer speaks Malayalam, Hanu sir speaks Telugu and Brinda master speaks Tamil. ”So, we would converse with each other in our languages. And the best part was that despite this, we were able to understand each other. It was really fun. Many times, Hanu Sir would start explaining the scene to me in Telugu and I used to tell him to speak in Hindi or English, but this process is the best thing that has ever happened as it helped me to start learning and understanding a new language.”
Kapil Sharma’s weekend show in New York has been pushed. While there’s a buzz that it’s because of a recent case by an American promoter, his team says the shows have been postponed because of a visa issue. After successful shows in Vancouver and Toronto, Kapil Sharma and his teammates were set to perform in New York this weekend. However, the shows now stand cancelled. As per the promoter of the event, it was reported that due to a ‘scheduling conflict’ the shows had to be pushed. NEW YORK , NY— Monkeypox cases in New York City have surpassed 200 — once again doubling in the span of a week that saw city and state officials press the federal government for more vaccine doses. The latest round of much-awaited monkeypox vaccine appointments can be booked Tuesday at 1 p.m., city officials said. But there’s a significant catch for at-risk New Yorkers who have waited weeks to score a vaccine. “There will be 1,250 appointments available to book online, and they will likely fill up quickly,” the city’s monkeypox page states. “We will make more appointments available as we receive more supply.” The city has seen 223 monkeypox cases so far out of 238 statewide, Gov. Kathy Hochul said. There were 111 cases a week ago, officials said. Both Hochul and Mayor Eric Adams have been pressing for “more supply” from the federal government as the city grapples with being the center of a burgeoning monkeypox outbreak. Adams even wrote President Joe Biden this week that the 21,000 doses allocated, while welcome, simply aren’t enough, the New York Post first reported.
Data show that the vaccines are safe and effective for young children. In fact, they often have fewer side effects from the vaccine than adults. Families are encouraged to talk to their pediatrician about vaccination and to get vaccinated at their doctor’s office. Children under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to get vaccinated. Beginning on July 16, People who are not currently CCH patients will be able to visit one of five community COVID-19 vaccine and testing sites: Stroger Hospital, Provident Hospital, Arlington Heights Health Center, North Riverside Health Center or Blue Island Health Center. Current CCH patients will still be able to get COVID-19 tests, vaccines and booster shots at their doctor’s office.

New Delhi, July 12 (IANS) Almost a week after asking the edible oil associations to cut down on MRP by at least Rs 15 per litre in line with the reduction in international prices, the Centre has issued a strict reminder, warning that it is keeping a watch on prices of edible oil. One of the prominent associations said on Tuesday that it takes about 10-15 days of buffer for the prices to cool down and cannot happen overnight.
Secretary in the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), Sudhanshu Pandey, on Monday wrote a strong reminder to the prominent edible oil associations such as the Solvents and Extractors Association of India (SEAI), Indian Vegetable Oil Producers’ Association (IVPA) and Soybean Processors Association of India (SOPA), asking those who have not yet reduced prices to immediately do so. The DFPD had held a meeting last week with the various associations after edible oil prices in the international markets spiralled down, prompting the government to direct them to reduce the MRP by at least Rs 15 per litre. First the Russia-Ukraine war and then the ban on export of palm oil by Indonesia had led to price escalation. Things started changing in the international market when Indonesia lifted the ban and also there was an increase in availability of sunflower oil from Ukraine by road.

Colombo: Sri Lanka’s president was considering using a navy patrol craft to flee the island Tuesday following a humiliating standoff with airport immigration, official sources of AFP said. Gotabaya Rajapaksa has promised to resign on Wednesday and clear the way for a “peaceful transition of power” following widespread protests against him over the country’s worst economic crisis.
Mumbai, July 12 (IANS) As the countdown for the upcoming Presidential elections starts, the Shiv Sena has dropped broad hints that it may support NDA’s candidate Draupadi Murmu and not the nonBJP Opposition’s nominee, Yashwant Sinha, here on Tuesday. Shiv Sena MP and Chief Spokesperson Sanjay Raut indicated this while interacting with the media, saying party President Uddhav Thackeray will announce his decision in a day or so.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday unveiled the national emblem cast on the roof of the new Parliament building here. The inauguration of the emblem, which is made up of bronze with a total weight of 9,500 kg and is 6.5 metre in height, marks the first major milestone ahead of the new building’s scheduled opening for later this year. Authorities have maintained that Parliament’s Winter session will be held there.
Officials said the emblem has been cast at the top of the central foyer of the new Parliament building, and a supporting structure of steel weighing around 6,500 kg has been constructed to support it. The concept sketch and process of casting of the national emblem on the roof of the new Parliament building has gone through eight different stages of preparation from clay modelling and computer graphics to bronze casting and polishing, they said.

“Can’t Play On Reputation”: ExIndia Bowler’s Scathing Criticism Of Team Selection
The Congress chief, 75, had to skip earlier summons after she tested positive for Covid on June 2. She was released from hospital in the middle of June and had asked for more time to appear before the agency. Mrs Gandhi’s son, Rahul Gandhi, underwent a series of questionings, spanning 10-12 hours over five days, by the central probe agency in the same case. Asked how he handled the marathon questioning sessions with the agency officers, Mr Gandhi, in a lighter vein, said “told them I do Vipassana”. “The Government of India...the Prime Minister thinks that by making me sit in the ED (office) for five days, I will change my behaviour. This is a confusion in the mind of the Prime Minister,” a defiant Rahul Gandhi said duirng a visit to his parliamentary constituency, Wayanad, last week.
Former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad has slammed Team India’s team selection, saying that the players cannot play on reputation and he highlighted on how some of the big names in Indian cricket were dropped from the playing XI once their form started going downhill. He also said that once these big players went through a slump in form, they went back to domestic cricket to do the hard yards. Prasad’s remarks come at a time when there is growing noise about Virat Kohli’s poor form. “There was a time when you were out of form, you would be dropped irrespective of reputation. Sourav, Sehwag,Yuvraj,Zaheer, Bhajji all have been dropped when not in form.
Another Rs 1,200 cr vanishes from BYJU’S funding round: Report HiIndia Newsdesk
New Delhi, July 11 (IANS) A whopping Rs 1,200 crore from a US-based company, recently announced by BYJU’S as a funding round, has gone off track, according to a media report. In September 2021, New York-based Oxshott invested Rs 1,200 crore as part of a Series F round at Rs 285,072 per share, according to regulatory filings reported by researcher Tofler. Other investors in the round included Edelweiss (Rs 344.9 crore), IIFL (Rs 110
crore), Verition Multi-Strategy Master Fund (Rs 147 crore) and XN Exponent Holdings ( Rs 150 crore), according to The Morning Context.
“Money from Oxshott Capital Partners or related entities for an investment has not reached the company,” the report claimed. This comes after a recent report which claimed that some money in the Rs 6,300 crore private equity investment that BYJU’s company announced in early this year has not come to the edtech company. However, BYJU’S, in a statement, said most of the funds have been received and the rest is on track.

Dr Rajesh Bothra Zofeen Maqsood
Michigan based Dr Rajesh Bothra who was accused of being involved in a prescription drug scheme has been acquitted of all charges after a six-week trial. Bothra along with three other Michigan doctors was acquitted in US District Court in Detroit, according to Macomb Daily. The doctors were accused of illegally prescribing more than 13 million pills and making false claims to collect millions of dollars from Medicare, Medicaid, and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan between 2013 to 2018. Assistant US Attorney Brandy McMillion said the doctors handed out drugs like a “McDonald’s drive thru” and compared the operation to an assembly line. But Bothra’s attorney Arthur Weiss told the Macomb Daily that the four doctors were providing medicine appropriately to patients with back pain. Bothra is a licensed physician who controlled, owned, and operated the Pain Center and the Interventional Pain Center in Warren, according to court records. Edu, Lewis, and Russo are licensed physicians.

Was “Dissatisfied” With Shinzo Abe: Arrested Japan Shooter Tells Police

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe passed away on Friday, hours after being shot while addressing an election rally in the city of Nara, according to state media. the leader died at 08:03 GMT, BBC reported. “During four and a half hour treatment, medics tried to stop the bleeding and carried out a blood transfusion, using more than 100 units of blood,” the doctor said. Abe sustained two wounds, believed to be bullet injuries, but medics could not find bullets during surgery, the doctor added. Abe, 67, immediately collapsed after being shot and was seen bleeding before he was taken to hospital. According to state broadcaster NHK, the attack took place at around 11.30 a.m. (local time) near the Yamatosaidaiji Station in Nara city while Abe was making a speech during a Liberal Democratic Party candidate’s election campaign. The suspect, identified as 41-year-old
Nobody can grab Shiv Sena’s bow and arrow symbol: Thackeray
HiIndia Newsdesk
MuMbAI, July 8 (IANS) Dismissing speculation in some media circles, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray on Friday asserted that nobody can take away the party’s iconic’ bow and arrow’ election symbol. “They are trying to spread confusion... There’s a difference between a legislature party and the registered political party in the field... No matter how many legislators go away, the party doesn’t cease to exist. A false impression is being created in peoples’ minds, don’t fall it,” Thackeray said. Thackeray said that the Supreme Court decision on July 11 would give an indication towards which direction democracy will head in this country.
Yamagami Tetsuya, a resident of Nara city, has been arrested. According to the police, the accused told investigators that he was dissatisfied with the former Prime Minister and intended to kill him. Investigative sources told NHK a gun seized at the scene appeared to be handmade. Japan is slated to hold parliamentary election this Sunday. Abe’s visit was only confirmed late last night, so how the suspect managed to find out about this and carry out the attack remains an open question, said the BBC. “It is totally unacceptable. I condemn the act in the strongest possible terms.” The Prime Minister added that “it is important for the government to prepare to take all necessary measures to deal
with any possible situation”. Sources added that the suspect worked for the Maritime Self Defense Force for three years until around 2005. Abe became Japan’s longest-serving Prime Minister after serving from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020. He stepped down in 2020 citing health reasons. He later revealed that he had suffered a relapse of ulcerative colitis, an intestinal disease, the BBC reported. He was succeeded by his close party ally Yoshihide Suga, who was later replaced by Fumio Kishida. Key figures from across the world have condemned the incident. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a day-long national mourning for Shinzo Abe.
JApANeSe former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe died after being shot during a political event earlier today. The man who attacked Abe was “dissatisfied” with him and wanted to kill him, local media reported, citing police sources. The 41-year-old, a former member of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force, opened fire at Abe with an apparently homemade gun. Explosives were found at the shooter’s house, officials said. Shinzo Abe was making a campaign speech outside a train station in the western city of Nara when two shots rang out. Security officials were then seen tackling the suspect in a grey T-shirt and beige trousers.

‘Shocked’: PM Modi condoles demise of Japan’s Abe, announces one day mourning HiIndia Newsdesk
New DelhI, July 8 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of former Japan PM Shinzo Abe and announced one day of national mourning on Saturday. In a series of tweets, he said: “I am shocked and saddened beyond words at the tragic demise of one of my dearest friends, Shinzo Abe. He was a towering global statesman, an outstanding leader, and a remarkable administrator. He dedicated his life to make Japan and the world a better place.” Recalling his long association with Abe, Modi said that it “goes back many years”. “I had got to know him during my tenure as Gujarat CM and our friendship continued after I became PM. and global affairs always made a deep impression on me. “During my recent visit to Japan, I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Abe again and discuss many issues. He was witty and insightful as always. Little did I know that this would be our last meeting. My heartfelt condolences to his family and the Japanese people.”
Ro Khanna asks to Exempt India from CAATSA Sanctions uS Rep from California’s 17th district, Ro Khanna has moved a legislation to amend a law that can exempt India from sanctions for purchasing Russian military hardware. Khanna said in a statement, “While India faces immediate needs to maintain its heavily Russian-built weapons
systems, a waiver to sanctions under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act during this transition period is in the best interests of the United States and the United States-India defence partnership to deter aggressors in light of Russia and China’s close partnership.”
MANy see Narayana Murthy’s sonin-law as most competent, but half a dozen key candidates are poised to run for the top job likely to be finalised only by October Rishi Sunak, Insosys founder Narayana Murthy’s son-in-law, is an odds-on favourite to become the UK’s next prime minister after his shock resignation as chancellor was key in toppling Boris Johnson. Bookies are giving Sunak 4/1 chances of landing the top job after Johnson announced he would quit as prime minister, sparking the leadership race. Sunak’s virtually simultaneous resignation with Sajid Javid as health secretary three days ago, proved to be the final nail in Johnson’s political coffin, triggering the exodus of more than 50 other government ministers. Sunak has already set up a temporary campaign office at a London hotel near the Houses of Parliament, according to British media. Many MPs see him as bestequipped to come up with a coherent strategy to counter Britain’s growing economic crisis in wake of Brexit.
