US makes huge interest rate India reacted swiftly to help Sri rise to tame soaring prices Lanka, says USAID administrator

HiIndia Newsdesk

The US central bank has announced another unusually large interest rate hike as it battles to rein in soaring prices in the world’s largest economy. The Federal Reserve said it would increase its key rate by 0.75 percentage points, targeting a range of 2.25% to

US mortgage lender to pay $20m in redlining case

2.5%. The bank has been raising borrowing costs since March to try to cool the economy and ease price inflation. But fears are rising the moves will tip the US into recession. Recent reports have shown falling consumer confidence, a slowing housing market, jobless claims rising and the first contraction in business activity since 2020. Many expect official figures this week will show the US economy shrank for the second quarter in a row. In many countries, that milestone is considered a recession though it is measured differently in the US.

HiIndia Newsdesk

India reacted “really swiftly” with an absolutely critical set of measures to help Sri Lanka tide over its economic crisis, but calls to Beijing for significant relief have gone unanswered, visiting USAID administrator Samantha Power said on Wednesday.

US to beef up security if Nancy Pelosi travels to Taiwan USA maintains informal relations and defence ties with Taiwan even as it recognises Beijing as the government of China

A US lender will pay $20m (£16.5m) to settle claims of discrimination against minority homebuyers, the justice department says. Trident Mortgage Company, owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, is accused of discriminatory lending in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The funds will be used to increase credit opportunities in underserved neighbourhoods, prosecutors said. It is the second-largest lending discrimination settlement in history. The practice - known as “redlining” was a common feature of the 20th Century, but is illegal under US law.

Nancy Pelosi HiIndia Newsdesk

US officials say they have little fear that China would attack Nancy Pelosi’s plane if she flies to Taiwan. But the US House speaker would be entering one of the world’s hottest spots, where a mishap, misstep or misunderstanding could endanger her safety. So the Pentagon is developing plans for any contingency. Officials told The Associated Press that if Pelosi goes to Taiwan — still an uncertainty — the military would increase its movement of forces and

assets in the Indo-Pacific region. They declined to provide details but said that fighter jets, ships, surveillance assets and other military systems would likely be used to provide overlapping rings of protection for her flight to Taiwan and any time on the ground there. Any foreign travel by a senior US leader requires additional security. But officials said this week that a visit to Taiwan by Pelosi — she would be the highest-ranking US elected official to visit Taiwan since 1997 — would go beyond the usual safety precautions for trips to less risky destinations.

In an address at an event in Delhi IIT, Power said China became one of Sri Lanka’s “biggest creditors” offering often “opaque loan” deals at higher interest rates than other lenders and wondered whether Beijing would restructure the debt to help the island nation. At a media briefing later, the senior US official said described as “absolutely invaluable” the USD 3.5 billion Lines of Credit that the Indian government have provided to Colombo. Power said the Biden administration and the Indian government are “deeply concerned” by the economic collapse and crisis that has befallen the Sri Lankan people.

Covid: Biden tests negative

HiIndia Newsdesk

President Joe Biden is ending his COVID-19 isolation after testing negative for the virus on Tuesday night and again on Wednesday. That’s according to a letter the White House released Wednesday from Biden’s physician. Dr. Kevin O’Connor writes that Biden has completed his course of treatment with the drug Paxlovid and remains free of fever. O’Connor says that given those factors and the pair of negative tests, Biden will discontinue his strict isolation measures. In fact, Biden is scheduled to appear in the White House Rose Garden around midday Wednesday.

Hundreds of protesters have breached a high-security zone in Baghdad and broken into Iraq’s parliament building. The supporters of cleric Muqtada al-Sadr oppose the nomination of a rival candidate for prime minister. Mr Sadr’s political alliance won the most seats in last October’s general election, but it is not in power due to political deadlock following the vote. Police reportedly fired tear gas and water cannon at the protesters. No lawmakers were present at the time. The group penetrated Baghdad’s closely-guarded Green Zone which is home to a number of the capital city’s most important buildings including embassies.

Luanda, July 28 (IANS) A rare 170-carat pink diamond, weighing 34 grams, thought to be the largest in the last 300 years, has been discovered in Angola. The pink stone has been named the “Lulo Rose”, after the mine in Angola where it was found. It will be sold later this year through an international tender to be conducted by Angolan stateowned diamond trading firm Sodium, reports Xinhua news agency. This is the fifth largest diamond from a total of 27 diamonds with more than 100 carats extracted to date in the Lulo mining project. In 2016, the operation yielded the largest ever diamond recovered in Angola, a 404-carat white stone later named the “4th February Stone”.The country’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo said the discovery of the pink diamond continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage for diamond mining and demonstrates the potential and rewards for commitment and investment in the country’s growing diamond mining industry.

Washington: Russia’s new space chief announced on Tuesday his country plans to withdraw from the International Space Station after 2024, but senior NASA officials said Moscow has not formally conveyed an intent to end its two-decade-old orbital partnership with the United States.

While heightened tensions between Moscow and Washington over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have raised months of doubt about future American-Russian space cooperation, the announcement by Yuri Borisov, the newly appointed director-general of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos, came as a surprise. The two former Cold War adversaries signed a crew exchange agreement less than two weeks ago allowing US astronauts and Russian cosmonauts to share flights on each other’s spacecraft to and from International Space Station (ISS) in the future. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson issued a statement reiterating the US commitment to keeping the ISS in operation through 2030, adding the space agency “is coordinating with our partners.” “NASA has not been made aware of decisions from any of our partners, though we are continuing to build future capabilities to assure our major presence in low-Earth orbit,” he said.

A live debate between Rishi Sunak and Liz Truss, ended dramatically halfway through its scheduled hour on Tuesday night when the journalist moderating the clash between the two Prime Ministerial candidates collapsed on stage with a loud crash. Viewers did not see the presenter, Kate McCann, fall down but they heard the sound of her lectern smashing down and a look of horror on Truss’s face as she mouthed, “Oh, my God!” The debate had been organised jointly by The Sun newspaper and TalkTV, a niche television station started by Rupert Murdoch on April 25 this year. One of the co-presenters, Harry Cole, political editor of the Sun, had to pull out at the last minute after testing positive for Covid. It was then left to McCann, political editor of TalkTV, to do the show on her own.

“Rashtrapatni” Remark Row Turns Into Sonia Gandhi vs BJP

Ms Sitharaman called it a “deliberate sexist abuse” and demanded that the Congress President apologise on behalf of the party.

HiIndia Newsdesk

New Delhi: Accusing the Congress of “demeaning” President Droupadi Murmu, the BJP today demanded an apology from Sonia Gandhi after her party leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury called Ms Murmu “Rashtrapatni”. Ms Irani launched a scathing attack on Sonia Gandhi, demanding an apology from her. “Sonia Gandhi sanctioned the humiliation of a woman at the highest constitutional office in the country,” she said. An irate Ms Irani also called Mrs

Gandhi “anti-Adivasi, anti-Dalit, and anti-woman”. Another protest led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who has just recovered from Covid, saw her standing with fellow MPs with placards on the Parliament premises protesting the remark. Inside the lower house, Ms Sitharaman called it a “deliberate sexist abuse” and demanded that the Congress President apologise on behalf of the party. “I demand an apology from the President

of Congress party who herself is a woman has allowed her leader to speak like that. Sonia Gandhi should come before the nation and apologise for insulting the President,” the finance minister said in the Lok Sabha. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury swiftly clarified saying it was a mere slip of the tongue and the BJP is “making a mountain out of a molehill”. He accused the BJP of distracting from crucial discussions on price rise, GST, the Agnipath scheme, unemployment, and other issues. Stressing there’s no chance of an apology to the BJP, he said he would personally meet Ms Murmu and apologise to the President “a hundred times” if she says she was hurt by his remark. He ascribed his “slip of the tongue” to the language barrier, claiming he is a Bengali and not proficient in Hindi as it’s not his mother tongue.

Not mandatory for ED to supply ECIR, disclosing ground of arrest enough: SC HiIndia Newsdesk

The Supreme Court on Wednesday said supply of a copy of Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in every case to the person concerned is not mandatory, while holding it is not equivalent to an FIR. New Delhi, July 27 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Wednesday said supply of a copy of Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) in every case to the person concerned is not mandatory, while holding it is not equivalent to an FIR. A bench, headed by Justice A.M. Khanwilkar and comprising Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and C.T. Ravikumar said: “Supply of a copy of ECIR in every case to the person concerned is not mandatory, it is enough if ED at the

time of arrest, discloses the grounds of such arrest.” The bench said in view of a special mechanism envisaged by the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the ECIR cannot be equated with an FIR. “ECIR is an internal document of the ED and the fact that FIR in respect of scheduled offence has not been recorded does not come in the way of the authorities referred to in Section 48 to commence inquiry/investigation for initiating ‘civil action’ of ‘provisional

attachment’ of property being proceeds of crime,” it added. It said the argument of prejudice pressed into service by the petitioners for non-supply of ECIR deserves to be answered against the petitioners. “For, the arrested person for offence of money laundering is contemporaneously informed about the grounds of his arrest; and when produced before the Special Court, it is open to the Special Court to call upon the representative of the ED to produce relevant record concerning the case of the accused before him and look into the same for answering the need for his continued detention,” it added. The petitioners’ counsel had argued that as per present situation, the ED can arrest an individual on the basis of an ECIR without informing him of its contents, which is per se arbitrary and violative of the constitutional rights of an accused.

Nawaz Sharif wants early elections HiIndia Newsdesk

London, July 27 (IANS) Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif wants early general elections and has discussed with the senior party leadership the option of quitting the government in the Centre, media reports said. Nawaz Sharif has discussed this several times with top leaders of the party including Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and also with the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), The News reported. He suggested that staying in the government any longer looked set to create more problems than resolving the issues in the absence of genuine support the government should have received from all state organs, said sources.

“Group of 23 (G-23)” that has been critical of the Congress leadership, said the ED should keep in mind the age and health of Sonia Gandhi before subjecting her to repeated questioning in the case, in which party leader Rahul Gandhi has already been questioned for over 50 hours. He said the Congress chief is aged, has not been well and was admitted to a hospital, adding that she cannot withhold the pressure of probe agencies. “Even in wars, kings used to give directions that women should not be attacked and those not keeping well should be spared,” Mr Azad said, urging the agencies not to be harsh on an aged and ailing Sonia Gandhi.

Arpita Mukherjee, arrested along with Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee in a school jobs scam, has reportedly claimed that he used to stash money at her home and treat it

Arpita Mukherjee’s lawyers are likely to deny the claims of the ED in court at the next hearing and have hit out at the agency for leaking details of their investigation to the media and pointed out the lack of convictions in cases by central agencies. Investigators had found Rs. 21 crore in cash from the home of Arpita Mukherjee, a former actor-model and a close aide of the minister. Visuals of a large pile of cash at her home emerged a day before she and Partha Chatterjee were arrested on Saturday. Arpita Mukherjee, say sources, has told the Enforcement Directorate that “all the money used to be stashed in one room that only Partha Chatterjee and his people entered”. Sources say she claimed that the minister used to visit her home every week or every 10 days. “Partha used my house and that of another woman as a mini-bank. Chaudhary said, “My father had a textile business in Bihar. After graduating in law, I joined the family business. Even then the study of Ayurveda continued but it remained limited to an interest and hobby only. After a few years my hair started falling. I once again looked to Ayurveda to find a cure and prepared hair oil recipes, but as I was busy with my textile business, I could not find time to refine the oil formula.” Talking about the birth of the ‘Avimee’ business, he said, “After corona, my daughter Vinita’s hair also

The result was that at the age of 85 my hair started growing and that too black. I was convinced that what I was making was good. Then my wife and my daughter started using the oil. They also started benefiting within two to three months. Then our relatives and neighbours started demanding the oil. My daughter’s son shared

this video on Instagram and other social media. After that, so many orders started pouring in that it became difficult to handle.” Chaudhary says that after getting results, the customers increased. “My grandson created the website and named it Avimee after my three daughters, Avni, Vinita and Meenakshi. People used to place orders after seeing the reels on social media. We must have received about 20,000 orders in a single week. We didn’t have the resources to deal with them. So, we couldn’t fulfil the orders, people started saying we are scamming. Finally, we had to start a factory to satisfy the demand. My family and everyone around appreciate my activity. My family supports me. That is why I am successful.” About the marketing of this oil, he said that “in the beginning when there was no promotion, it was sold only through friends or relatives. When it was started from home, about 110 to 200 bottles were sold in a month. Related matters like marketing and sales are taken care of by my grandson and his wife. We now manufacture the oil and many other related products. As the demand grew, more products were marketed based on research.” About the success achieved in a single year, he says, “we have not spent a single rupee on advertisement. People market us from their own experience, I have been using herbal products for years so I have confidence in my products. But I never thought that I would get such success in one year. I believe destiny decides everything; we are just puppets in time’s hand”. Radhakrishan Chaudhary’s grandson and his wife Ambika Agarwal state that they create insta reels and produce products from premium materials. “We do not spend extra on marketing. We sell products at prices that everyone can afford. We do not compare with any other brand’s products. We are still working on launching more products.”

I have grown up seeing a certain style of acting in Hindi cinema, which is typically an exaggerated form. So, I didn’t know that there is an audience for the subtle [performance] that I do. With

OTT, a new style of acting is being appreciated. So, I feel validated. But I want to play a lot more with dialect and characters,” she shares. For now though, it’s time for Gupta to become the character she has known all her life — herself — as she presents the second season of the Netflix comedy. While the Sonam Nair-directed series will see some familiar faces from the opening season in Neena Gupta and Neil Bhoopalam, actors Ram Kapoor, Kusha Kapila, and Barkha Singh have also joined the cast. Gupta notes that the upcoming edition touches on the subject of mental health. “Mental health is a conversation that you cannot ignore in today’s day and age, but it has to be addressed [responsibly]. We have done it in a way that people will at least take the first step to tackle their mental health issues.” A successful fashion house, an eponymous series, and a successful anthology. Is Bollywood the next stop for the designer-turned-actor? “I have a full life being an entrepreneur. Until it absolutely fulfils me as an actor, I won’t do [a film]. To be honest, Bollywood will do what it does — they will still cast the 10 people that they always have been casting.

Amitkumar Kanubhai Patel from Vadodara, Gujarat who formerly lived in Edison took his US born child to India and then did not bring it back to the mother. Patel was convicted last week of one count of international parental kidnapping following a five-day trial before US District Judge Renee Marie Bumb in Camden federal court in New Jersey. According to documents filed in this case, the child’s mother and Patel were in a relationship and lived together in NJ. They were never married. According to the child’s mother, Patel wanted to take the child to India to introduce him to Patel’s parents and also get a DNA testing which he claimed was necessary to get Patel’s family owned property in India. Reportedly, Patel also told the mother that to get an Indian visa for the child, he need to get the

Patel then directed the mother to tell the court that there was a mutual understanding regarding the custody of their child and tell that as she was unemployed she could not care for the child. Patel then flew to India with the child and after several days phoned the mother to say that they won’t be bringing back the child. This is when, the mother obtained a legal counsel, and in 2018, the New Jersey Superior Court, entered an order that directed Patel to return the child to the United States. In 2020, Patel and the child flew to the UK, where he was arrested upon arrival based on a provisional arrest request submitted by the United States. Grand Opening Of Alexandria Bay Port Of Entry HiIndia Newsdesk

ALEXANDRIA BAY, NY – On July 19, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony the brand new stateof-the-art Port of Entry at Alexandria Bay. The completion of this modernization project was a long time coming, with an unanticipated pandemic during the middle of construction. The main goal of the port expansion project was to increase efficiency and improve traffic flow. Back on August 30, 2017, the Port of Entry began a $215 million expansion project. The Port of Entry is located on Wellesley Island, New York which is on the western part of the Saint Lawrence River. The port is the sixth busiest crossing on the U.S.-Canadian border, processing nearly 600,000 passenger vehicles each year. The Port of Entry has existed since 1938 when the Thousand Islands International Bridge System was constructed. The Bridge System connects Wellesley Island to Hill Island in Ontario, Canada. The previous Main Administration Building and Passenger Processing Facility was

built in 1975 by the Thousand Islands Bridge Authority. Over the years, the facility became outdated and no longer met the needs of the agency. The port expansion project included two phases, with the phase one being completed in October 2020. Phase two was completed in March 2022, that included the construction of passenger inbound and outbound inspection areas and the port administration. “It’s a state of the art facility that greatly

enhances our officers ability to screen incoming passenger and commercial traffic,” said Area Port Director Timothy Walker. The facility is completely modernized and includes Port Director Offices, a conference room, a Mission Support Suite, a computer lab, a muster room and an agriculture lab. Additionally, the facility has a suite for Homeland Security Investigations. The port also has a passenger secondaryinspection plaza and a bus inspection

site that has Non-Intrusive Inspection Equipment. Lastly, the facility has interview rooms, a seizure-processing room, holding areas for detention and a tactical and physical training area with a weapons support room. The facility is equipped with is eight passenger inspection lanes to include a bus lane, an enclosed passenger secondary inspection building with a vehicle lift and canopy for secondary inspection parking. To accommodate outbound inspections, the facility has an outbound processing office with two outbound inspection lanes and an outbound secondary inspection canopy. The biggest features of this new facility are the increased space created for queuing traffic and the additional booths to process passenger, cargo and bus traffic. The new port was built about 300 yards south of the old facility. The old port was so close to the border line that there was never any room to queue the vehicles during high volume traffic. This has always caused traffic issues and delays to our neighbors to the north,” said Assistant Area Port Director Kurt Tennant.

The Benefits of a Social Media Break, Plus 30 Things to Do Instead

Y

For most of us, social media is simply a part of our lives, for better and for worse. At the same time, we can use it in a way that emphasizes the positive over the negative, both for us and for others. With a little conscious use, occasional breaks, and balance with other activities, social media can be a healthy tool for selfexpression and connection.

our mental health is more important than your Instagram aesthetic. So, what can you do instead of curating and scrolling? The beautiful thing is the world is your oyster! When you step away from the screen and into the three dimensional world, there’s an endless array of options depending on your needs. Once you identify why you’re feeling the urge to log onto your social media accounts, you can redirect this feeling in other ways.

If you use social media to relax

If you find you reach for your phone when you have a little down time, consider swapping for these options instead: • Take a walk around the block. • Put on some music. • Set the mood with candles or diffuse some essential oils. • Read a book. • Try doodling or crafting. • Bake something delicious. • Play with a pet. • Try yoga or meditation. • Drink a soothing, hot beverage, like a tea or hot chocolate. • Look at old photos and reminisce.

If you use social media to connect with others

If you find yourself longing for some human connection and the desire to check your feed arises, try these activities instead: • Call a friend or family member (bonus points for a video call!). • Invite someone over for dinner or drinks. • Bake something and offer it to your neighbors, lingering to chat when you deliver it. • Organize a weekend brunch, hike, or

shopping trip with friends. • Check out Meetup.com for likeminded groups to join (and actually attend an event!). • Volunteer at a local food bank or other organization. • Take a class through your local Parks and Recreation Department. • Join a community group, like a church, nonprofit, or club. • Take a goat yoga class — you’re almost certain to come away smiling.

If you use social media for entertainment

Instead of memes and 30-second videos, opt for some IRL entertainment: • Go see some live music. • Check out an arcade (Skee-Ball, anyone?). • Try a paint your own pottery studio, like Color Me Mine. • Learn an instrument. • Take a dance or martial arts class. • Take a hike (literally). • Take a trip to a local museum. • Try your hand at gardening. • Listen to a podcast. • Read a book. Gather some friends or family and play a board game. There’s a lot of power in knowing your motives for logging onto your social accounts. Once you do, you can make a choice to meet that need in another way.

How to set healthy social media boundaries

While taking breaks from social media is great, it’s important to be realistic (and not militant) about your use. If social media s a part of your life, that’s OK. There are ways to lessen the negative effects and enhance the positive effects of social media, even

While using social media for personal contact and maintaining relationships was associated with improved mental health, there was still a correlation between increased daily time on social media and poorer mental health overall. On the other hand, a 2021 pilot study of 68 university students found that most students reported a positive change in mood, reduced anxiety, and improved sleep during and immediately after a break from social media. while you’re using it.

For instance, you can:

Unfollow accounts that have a negative effect on your mood or self-image. Remove photos from your own profile that trigger self-judgment. Delete any negative DMs, trolling, or spam. Unsave posts that encourage you to compare yourself to others. On top of that, you can set an example for mindful, authentic posting, so others can be inspired by your feed and perhaps follow suit.

For starters, you can:

Skip the filter and showcase the real you. Post photos of the “messy” moments, not just the perfect ones. Remind others in your captions that you’re a real person with flaws, hangups, and insecurities — just like them. Post encouraging comments on others’ posts. Post about taking breaks when you take them to remind others they can do the same.

The World Health Organisation on Saturday declared the monkeypox as public health emergency of international concern. The global health body said the expanding monkeypox outbreak in more than 70 countries is an “extraordinary” situation that now qualifies as a global emergency. “WHO’s assessment is that the risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region where we assess the risk as high,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Gherbreyesus said in a statement. The statement also said further that it is also a clear risk of further international spread, although the risk of interference with international traffic remains low for the moment. “So in short, we have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little, and which meets the criteria in the International Health Regulations,” the WHO chief added.

Aussie researchers create spray to keep viruses, bacteria at bay

HiIndia Newsdesk

Researchers from Australian universities developed a spray that can stop the spread of bacteria and viruses, including the Covid-19 virus. Published in the journal Advanced Science, the long-lasting spray coats common surfaces and repels viruses and bacteria through an air-filled barrier as well as killing pathogens, Xinhua news agency reported. One of its inventors, biomedical engineer Professor Antonio Tricoli from the University of Sydney, said the spray used a combination of plastics strong enough to be considered an alternative to bullet-proof glass. “Without a barrier, viruses such as coronaviruses can stay on surfaces and remain infectious for up to a week,” Tricoli added in an article published in Scimex on Thursday. “Other viruses, which can cause colds or diarrhoea, can remain on surfaces for several weeks, causing large outbreaks in health and agedcare facilities.”

India are likely to host the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025 as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are set to bid for the global event. If BCCI wins the bid, the Women’s ODI World Cup will return to India after more than a decade. The last time a Women’s 50-over event was staged in India was in 2013, when Australia emerged champions after defeating West Indies by 114 runs in the final in Mumbai.

The ICC’s Annual Conference is being held in Birmingham and it has been learnt that the bids for the four big women’s ICC events for the next cycle will be accepted during the meet, PTI News Agency reported. “Bids are being accepted for four women’s events. The prominent amongst them are 2024 and 2026 ICC T20 World Cup and the 2025 edition of the ODI World Cup,” an ICC Board member told PTI.

Former Australia skipper Ricky Ponting has praised Pakistan captain Babar Azam for his batting. Ponting said that Babar has “got better and better” in the last couple of years. While lauding Babar and his progress in the batting department, Ponting also said that Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia will be directly dependent on the right-handed batter’s performance. He feels that the side cannot win the mega event in case Babar fails to perform with the bat.

The batter has now gotten the support of Robin Uthappa, as the T20 World Cup-winner said that the batter needs to be left alone as he knows how to deal with things. “When he (Virat Kohli) was scoring runs, when he was hitting hundred after hundred, nobody said he should play like this or that. Now, I don’t think we have any right to tell him how to play. He has scored 70 hundreds thanks to his own abilities and he will score another 30 or 35 also on his own abilities,” Robin Uthappa said while speaking on ShareChat’s Audio Chatroom session, as per India Today. “We need to just leave him alone and

Speaker Om Birla had earlier warned them to behave and not to hold the placards inside the house if they wanted to protest. Now, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has added this 28-year-old woman, who has been missing from New Jersey for the last three years, to its list of “Missing Persons” and is asking for assistance from the public on her whereabouts. Bhagat came to the United States in 2016 on an F1 Visa. She was enrolled at the University of New Hampshire and then the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), according to information released by the FBI. New Delhi: A racket promising a Rajya Sabha seat for up to Rs.100 crore has been busted by the Central Bureau of Investigation, people familiar with the matter told NDTV. The central probe agency caught the accused just before money exchanged hands, they said, adding the accused also offered governorship for up toRs.100 crore. The Central Bureau of Investigation, or CBI, had been listening to calls via a phone intercept for the last few weeks as they zeroed in on the accused, people with direct knowledge of the matter said, asking not to be identified. Over four people have been charged by the CBI. Some of them have been identified as Maharashtra resident Karmalakar Premkumar Bandgar, Karnataka resident Ravindra Vithal Naik, and Delhi residents Mahendra Pal Arora and Abhishek Boora. The accused ran an elaborate racket to cheat people by falsely assuring them they would arrange seats in Rajya Sabha, governorship, or appointment as chairperson of government organisations, ministries and departments, sources said.

Partha Chatterjee’s “Arrest Memo” says the 70-year-old chose his boss Mamata Banerjee for his phone call to a “relative/ friend whom the person taken in custody intends to inform”. His first call to her, after his arrest at around 1.55 am, was made at 2.33 am. “He called her but she didn’t take his call,” the memo records. Mr Chatterjee called again at 3.37 am and 9.35 am, again without luck. According to the police, any accused person is allowed a call to a relative or friend to inform them about their arrest. Mr Chatterjee was once one of Mamata Banerjee’s top aides, but her silence has led to speculation that he had been ghosted by the Chief Minister.
