INTERMITTENT FASTING FOR WEIGHT LOSS, EXPLAINED BY EXPERTS
‘My mother’s dream comes true’ : Karan
and on social media that people tend to follow for weight loss purposes— and exactly what the current research says (if any exists!) about the potential benefits for each one. Really though, the most successful diet is one you can stick to, so the IF schedule that seems the easiest to follow is probably your best bet.
1. The 16:8 diet

The 16:8 method of intermittent fasting involves fasting every day for 16 hours and restricting your daily eating window to eight hours. For most people, this schedule means not eating anything after dinner and skipping breakfast. You might eat between, say, noon and 8 p.m. As far as how the 16:8 method fares for weight loss? It could work, the (very limited) research shows. In a recent (albeit small) study published in the journal Nutrition and Healthy Aging, 23 obese men and women followed the 16:8 diet for 12 weeks. Compared to a group that had eaten normally and not within a set timeframe, those on the 16:8 diet took in 350 fewer calories per day, lost a modest amount of weight (about 3 percent of their body weight on average), and lowered their blood pressure. Still, it’s important to note that this was a small study, and few others have examined the 16:8 diet specifically, so it’s tough to say that following the 16:8 diet is a surefire way to shed excess weight. Interestingly, following this kind of eating plan may help with appetite control (counterintuitive, no?). A study in the journal Obesity showed that people who ate only during a sixhour window, compared to following a normal eating schedule, felt less hungry than the control group, even though both groups ate the same amount of calories.

Incorporating an intermittent fasting schedule into your routine is officially one of the diet trends of the moment. Celebs like Jenna Jameson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Halle Berry all swear by intermittent fasting. And with tons of people pairing it with keto eating plans, it’s likely you know someone who’s doing it.
This one is similar to the 16:8 method, but involves fasting for a 14-hour window and eating for 10. It’s a little easier to stick to than 16:8 because you have a longer eating window, but it’s possibly less effective when it comes to weight loss. Given that the fasting period is short and pretty much follows the way people already eat, it may be hard for some people to achieve a caloric deficit with this diet. Still, it could be a good way to ease into IF if you’re new to it and just want to see how you do when you have a specific timeframe for eating and can’t just snack whenever the mood strikes.

2. The 5:2 method
To follow the 5:2 diet, you eat normally five days a week and cut back to 20 percent of your normal daily calorie intake for the other two. Women are supposed to have about 500 calories on “fasting” days, while men have about 600. This IF method resulted in more weight and fat loss compared to dayto-day calorie restriction in a 2017 study in the International Journal of
fasting every other day. There are several different versions of this plan, with some of them allowing about 500 calories on the fasting days, and some encouraging that you eat even fewer or close to zero calories on fasting days. Many of the existing studies on the health benefits of intermittent fasting used some version of this particular diet, though much of the weight loss-focused research hasn’t been
This method of intermittent fasting involves a full fast for 24 hours once or twice a week. For example, you may eat dinner at 6 p.m. and then fast until 6 p.m. the next day, and you would do this one or two times per week—but not in a row. There’s no research currently on this specific method of IF, but because of calorie reduction, it’s likely to result in weight loss if it’s a fasting schedule that works for you. (Of course, keep in mind that not eating for a full 24 hours can be pretty tough.)
This diet is way different from the rest, with the majority of eating happening at night. The Warrior Diet was coined by fitness author Ori Hofmekler. It involves eating only small portions of raw fruits and vegetables during the day, then feasting on one huge meal at night within a 4-hour eating window. There’s no specific research on the Warrior Diet, but since the “fasting” periods still allow for some food, it may be more practical for some people. Still, the period when you can have heavier foods is very small, and the diet also involves focusing on paleo foods, so it’s stricter than other forms of IF. If you can achieve a caloric deficit on this diet, it may lead to weight loss like other IF methods.

US economic recovery ‘making progress’, says Fed HiIndia Newsdesk The US central bank has said that the economy is making progress due to widespread vaccinations. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates on hold near zero, saying that inflation largely reflected factors that would pass in time. While jobs growth and the economy had strengthened, “risks to the economic outlook remain”, it said. The central bank will continue to monitor economic progress before easing pandemic support. The announcement, following the end of its two-day meeting, comes amid concerns that rising prices could prompt the Fed to push up interest rates, increasing the cost of borrowing for businesses and consumers. Consumer prices jumped 5.4% in the 12 months to the end of June, up from 5% the previous month.

US gunmaker offers $33m to Sandy Hook shooting victims

Caeleb Dressel breaks Olympic record on way to second gold HiIndia Newsdesk The company that made a rifle used in one of the worst school shootings in the US has offered $33m (£24m) to several victims’ families. The proposed settlement for the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre from Remington, America’s oldest gun-maker, came as
part of a bankruptcy hearing for the company. It also comes in response to a lawsuit brought by families of nine of the 26 victims. Each family would receive some $3.66m. It is subject to the approval of the Alabama judge overseeing Remington’s bankruptcy case.
CDC again calls for indoor masks as Delta variant of Covid-19 erupts The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Americans should resume wearing masks in areas where there are more than 50 new infections per 100,000 residents over the previous seven days, or more than 8% of tests are positive for infection over that period.
HiIndia Newsdesk Revising a decision made just two months ago, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Tuesday that people vaccinated against the coronavirus should resume wearing masks in public indoor spaces in parts of the country where the virus is surging.
CDC officials also called for universal masking for teachers, staff, students and visitors in schools, regardless of vaccination status and community transmission of the virus. With additional precautions, schools nonetheless should return to in-person learning in the fall. The recommendations are another baleful twist in the course of America’s pandemic, a war-weary concession that the virus is outstripping vaccination efforts. The agency’s move follows rising case counts in states like Florida and Missouri, as well as growing reports of breakthrough infections of the more contagious delta variant among people who are fully immunized.
New York offers $100 to whoever ‘Few relationships more vital’: gets vaccinated at city-run sites Blinken says US won’t forget India’s aid HiIndia Newsdesk New York is offering $100 dollars to every citizen who gets their first dose of the vaccine against coronavirus disease (Covid-19) at any of the city-run vaccination sites, according to reports citing statements made by mayor Bill de Blasio. The development comes amid a surge in new Covid-19 infections in the United States as the more infectious delta variant spreads like wildfire across the nation. New York, as of Wednesday, had vaccinated nearly 71% of all the adults in the city, the report said, adding that around 59% of the city’s total population have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. More than 65% of adults and 54% of New York City’s total population have been fully vaccinated, the report added.
HiIndia Newsdesk US secretar y of state Antony Blinken on Wednesday said that there are few relationships more vital than the one between India and the United States. Speaking at a joint press conference after India-US delegation-level talks, Blinken said the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) hit both countries very hard and the US will not forget the aid and assistance India provided early in the pandemic. The top US diplomat said that the two sides discussed regional security issues including Afghanistan, echoing Jaishankar’s remark that there was much more convergence on the matter than divergence. Blinken stressed that both sides are committed to the proposition that there is no military solution to the conflict.
HiIndia Newsdesk USA’s Caeleb Dressel set an Olympic record on his way to winning the men’s 100m freestyle gold medal as he seeks to become one of the most successful swimmers at an individual Games. Dressel won in a time of 47.02 seconds to claim his second gold in Tokyo. China took gold in a thrilling women’s 4x200m freestyle in a world-record time of seven minutes 40.33 seconds. Meanwhile Great Britain’s Commonwealth champion James Wilby missed out on a medal in the men’s 200m breaststroke.
Big Tech starts requiring Covid-19 vaccines
HiIndia Newsdesk Twitter Inc is shutting its reopened offices in United States, while other big tech companies are making vaccination mandatory for on-campus employees, as the highly infectious Delta Covid-19 variant drives a resurgence in cases. Alphabet Inc’s Google and Facebook Inc said on Wednesday all US employees must get vaccinated to step into offices. Google is also planning to expand its vaccination drive to other regions in the coming months. Twitter, which on Wednesday also paused future office reopenings, had started allowing employees back to its campuses in San Francisco and New York at 50% capacity about a fortnight ago after more than 16 months. US coronavirus cases have been rising due to the Delta variant, which emerged in India but has quickly spread and now accounts for more than 80% of US coronavirus cases.

ew Delhi: Against the backdrop of concern on India’s democratic institutions failing, visiting US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken brought up the issue of the need to strengthen democratic values, while the Indian side countered that New Delhi had an obligation to correct “historical” wrongs and ensure “governance”. This was Blinken’s first visit to India after taking over as Secretary of State. He was preceded by his cabinet colleague, Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, who
visited New Delhi as the first representative of the Biden administration in March. Having arrived on Tuesday night, Blinken spent less than 24 hours in India before travelling onto Kuwait. Blinken began his day with a civil society roundtable attended by six representatives from various faiths and Supreme Court lawyer Menaka Guruswamy. At the meeting, which lasted around 50 minutes, each participant was given fixed time to express their views. According to sources, the US Secretary of State heard from representatives on contentious issues ranging from the Citizenship Amendment Act to the harassment of inter-faith couples and the ongoing farmers’ protest. There were concerns expressed that the fabric of India’s constitutional framework was being frayed. The revelations on possible surveillance of opposition

Top Stories of the Week
Amid rising Covid-19 cases, Centre sends team to Kerala to take stock of situation Kerala has reported over 22,000 infections for the last three days, which comprises over 50 per cent of the national daily case count. HiIndia Newsdesk The Centre on Thursday decided to send a six-member team from the National Centre for Disease Control to Kerala to take stock of the Covid-19 situation. The state has reported over 22,000 infections for the last three days, which comprises over 50 per cent of the national daily case count. “Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to depute a highlevel multi-disciplinary team to Kerala to collaborate with the State Health Authorities in instituting effective public health measures for Covid-19 management in view of the significantly enhanced number of daily Covid cases being reported by Kerala. The 6-member
central team to Kerala is headed by Dr S K Singh, Director, National Centre for Disease Control. The team shall reach Kerala on 30th July, 2021 and visit a few districts,” a statement released by the Centre read. The development comes a day after state-level serosurvey data released by the central government revealed that only 44 per cent of Kerala’s population above the age of six years had so far been infected with the coronavirus, against the national average of over 67 per cent. This, in effect, meant that a much larger proportion of the population in the state is still susceptible to the disease compared to many other states. Also, the number could, at least partially, explain why Kerala is continuing to report a high number of cases.

Afghanistan has to be free from BJP Plans Yatra With New malign influences: India on Pakistan Cabinet Ministers From State
Jaishankar welcomes US Secretary of State Antony J Blinken.
HiIndia Newsdesk Describing the atrocities being committed by the Taliban in their advance across Afghanistan as “deeply troubling”, visiting US Secretary of State Antony J Blinken said Wednesday that this does not speak well of Taliban “intentions” and “taking over power by force” cannot be a path to international recognition. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who was listening when Blinken made these remarks, spelt out India’s redlines: that the outcome in Afghanistan should not be “decided by force on the battlefield”; that there is “broad and deep consensus” on a negotiation that leads to peace and cessation of violence; and that there should be a political settlement. Jaishankar said the independence and sovereignty of Afghanistan can only be ensured “if it is free from malign influences” — a reference to Pakistan’s involvement. “Regarding Afghanistan, it is essential that peace negotiations are taken seriously by all parties. The world wishes to see an independent, sovereign, democratic and stable Afghanistan at peace with itself and with its neighbours but its independence and sovereignty will only be ensured if it

NEWS BREIF Jabbed US, EU visitors face no UK quarantine
HiIndia Newsdesk England will allow fully vaccinated visitors from the EU and US to arrive without needing to quarantine from next week, in a huge and long-awaited boost for airlines and travel companies. Britain’s travel industry has criticised the government for being too slow to open up, saying it has squandered its lead in the global vaccine rollout and given the EU a headstart in attracting tourists. Now, from August 2, travellers with US and EU-approved vaccines will not have to quarantine. Lifting the same requirement for fully vaccinated Britons returning from medium risk countries in July helped to kickstart a travel recovery.
US has messed it up: Imran
HiIndia Newsdesk Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the US “really messed it up” in Afghanistan as he questioned the American motive for the 2001 invasion of the country in the first place and then their subsequent attempts of seeking a political solution with the Taliban from a position of weakness. Khan also said that the only good solution to the Afghan situation is through a political settlement that is “inclusive” and involves all factions, including the Taliban. “I think the US has really messed it up in Afghanistan,” Khan said during an interview with Judy Woodruff on PBS NewsHour, an American news programme, aired on Tuesday night, the Dawn newspaper reported. Under a deal with the Taliban, the US and its Nato allies agreed to withdraw all troops in return for a commitment by the militants that they would prevent extremist groups from operating in areas they control.

Taliban have important role to play in Afghan peace process: China Nine Taliban representatives met foreign minister Wang Yi in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin on a two-day visit
Taliban negotiator and deputy leader Mullah Baradar Akhund (left) with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in Tianjin, China
HiIndia Newsdesk China told a visiting Taliban delegation on Wednesday it expected the insurgent group to play an important role in ending Afghanistan’s war and rebuilding the country, the Chinese foreign ministry said. Nine Taliban representatives met foreign minister Wang Yi in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin on a two-day visit during
which the peace process and security issues were discussed, a Taliban spokesperson said. Wang said the Taliban is expected to “play an important role in the process of peaceful reconciliation and reconstruction in Afghanistan”, according to a readout of the meeting from the foreign ministry. Wang also said that he hoped the Taliban would crack down on the East Turkestan Islamic Movement as it was a “direct threat to China’s national security”, according to the readout, referring to a group China says is active in the Xinjiang region in China’s far west. The visit was likely to further cement the insurgent group’s recognition on the international stage at a sensitive time even as violence increases in Afghanistan. The militants have a political office in Qatar where peace talks are taking place and this month sent representatives to Iran where they had meetings with an Afghan government delegation.

Here are six of the most popular IF approaches you’ll come across online and on social media that people tend to follow for weight loss purposes— and exactly what the current research says (if any exists!) about the potential benefits for each one. Really though, the most successful diet is one you can stick to, so the IF schedule that seems the easiest to follow is probably your best bet.
19
Picking a diet that work best with all the lifestyle factors you need to consider, like your work schedule, family dynamic, living situation, commute time, and travel commitments.
1. The 16:8 diet
5. The 14:10 diet
For Weight Loss, Explained By Experts Incorporating an intermittent fasting schedule into your routine is officially one of the diet trends of the moment. Celebs like Jenna Jameson, Vanessa Hudgens, and Halle Berry all swear by intermittent fasting. And with tons of people pairing it with keto eating plans, it’s likely you know someone who’s doing it. Obesity. Again, research on humans is limited, so it’s tough to draw major conclusions from one promising study.
6. The Warrior Diet
conclusive.
4. Eat-stop-eat diet
3. Alternate-day fasting As the name implies, this diet involves

Shouldering a film is a big responsibility

riti Sanon, Mimi is the manifestation of how far she has come in her career. After seven years in the industry and several hits, she is ready to carry a film on her able shoulders. “This is my most special project because it’s the first film I am shouldering; it’s a big responsibility. People have invested their money, believing in [me]. With Bareilly Ki Barfi [2017] and Luka Chuppi [2019] winning applause, it gave me the confidence and hunger to find something more character-driven.” The Netflix film, also starring Pankaj Tripathi and Sai Tamhankar, sees Sanon as a small-town woman who agrees to become a surrogate mother. She says that director Laxman Utekar has a knack for weaving strong social messages in comedies — be it embracing live-in relationships through Luka Chuppi, or putting the spotlight on surrogacy with his latest offering. “When I read the script, I realised it’s a serious subject set in an entertaining world. This film does not preach about surrogacy. It’s based on a true incident that took place 13 years ago when a foreigner couple [roped in] an Indian woman to become their surrogate, but abandoned her mid-way. After that, the surrogacy laws in India became stricter.” Not too long ago, the industry believed that a young actor playing a mother was hara-kiri for her career. She is glad that we’ve left such regressive ideas behind. “It didn’t cross my mind until I heard people saying, ‘You shouldn’t play a mother so early in your career’. I don’t think [such notions] matter. My producer Dinoo [Dinesh Vijan] was surprised to see how well [my performance] shaped up. Women have a maternal instinct. I’m [protective] of my younger [sister], so there’s a chhoti mummy inside me,” she laughs. The film reunites her with Tripathi, who played her father in Bareilly Ki Barfi.

The director, who called the film “a visual spectacle for audiences,” was all praise for the actors. He tagged Ranbir as a “generation defining actor” and promised that Sanjay Dutt fans are in for a surprise. “Ranbir Kapoor is a generation defining actor and has given his best to Shamshera. The filmmaker said he “can’t wait to share Shamshera” with the audience. “As a filmmaker, I have been fortunate enough to be able to tell stories that I would like to see as an audience and Shamshera is definitely that kind of a story. It is a visual extravaganza with complexed human emotions and it deserves to be on the big screen where people have, for years had a truly wholesome cinematic experience of watching Hindi feature films,” the director said, adding that Shamshera celebrates everything that a pan Indian stands for. The director is also confident that the film will appeal to everyone who wants to watch good cinema on the big screen after the pandemic.

f you celebrate Navratri or have attended many Navratri events chances are you must have heard of legendary Garba singer Atul Purohit. A most sought after name in Gujarati community, everyone swears by the unique style of Purohits’ Garba delivery. While no big event is complete without his music, the living legend has also received immense recognition. A recipient of Gujrat Gaurav Puruskaar, Purohit is a favorite amongst Gujarati communities all across the globe.
The Unique Ethnic Singer Preserving Garba in its Original form
The beginnings of a legend
Legendary Garba singer Atul Purohit who hails from Vadodara in India is a world renowned musician known for his unique style of performing Garba music. The singer learnt the art of devotional music through instinct and natural talent. Unlike the popular stories of most singers, Purohit was not born in a musicians’ family. He hailed from a family of priests. His father was a pujari and the family hailed from a small village near Vadodara called Dholar. While his father wanted his son to carry on the tradition of family and be a pujari his mother saw a music inclination in her young son. She was the one who got him his first harmonium. When the young Atul Purohit was only about 8 or 10 he began stumping the elders with his grasp over music and his understanding towards delivering devotional music. Most of his early education in music came from observing the traveling musicians and singers who would sing bhajans, hymns, dohas and songs praising God. Later he joined a local music group and began traveling as soon as he passed out from school. He used to travel to small villages and remote towns
Purohit is one of the precious few artists who are preserving the art of Garba in its original, classic form in and around Gujarat and impressed everyone with his unique approach to singing Garba. According to the singer, he never had one guru but had many gurus along with whom he performed, listened and learnt. A musician with an unmistakable talent for understanding the audience, he soon rose to popularity wherever he performed. It was back in 1982 that Atul Purohit branched out and started a group along with some of his friends and called it the Rishabh Group. And it was around 1985 that the group started performing commercially. As was expected the audience became enraptured by his style of garba and he was a sought after artist wherever he went to perform. The group was successful and after about six years in 1991, Purohit decided to start his own group called Rutumbhara Group. The group was a success from a start and the singer had an association with a global group from Vadodara – United Way of Baroda. His association with the organization has been going strong till today and speaks volumes about his talent and work ethics.

Legendary musician Atul Purohit is one of the first ever Garba singers to get his name patented. A name synonymous with Navratri celebrations not just in India but around the world, Purohit is now a brand with his name officially registered in trademark registry The group performs successfully at annual events in Vadodara that are some of the most sought after events for music and garba lovers. As the popularity grew and word spread about Purohit’s distinct music, requests began coming from the community across the globe. It was in 1994 that a promoter asked the group to perform for the very first time in the US and they did a show in New Jersey. It was not just in the US that the demand for this folk style garba grew, the group has been performing regularly in Australia and Canada since the early 2000’s. While the singer gets regular updates from his audiences abroad the past two years have been affected by the Covid Pandemic. After their last show in the US in 2017, the troupe hasn’t been able to return and while the artists miss their days on stage, Purohit says he would wait for the situation to normalize. While India still is recovering from pandemic and is watching very closely for any new breakouts, things are getting better in the US. However, like a wise and calm person Purohit says that he will not be hasty to fly abroad to be on stage but rather wait. As a lead singer he is responsible for his entire crew and he maintains he does not want to be in a situation where he may get stuck. For most artists the pandemic has been exceptionally cruel. Not only does an artist miss the pulse of
performing in front of a live audience but it can be a financially tough situation too. He informs that some of his group members fell sick with Covid and required hospitalizations and expensive treatments. He says, “We did all we could do and helped them emotionally and financially.” He also informs that his group members have been with him since the day of inception and have stood together for more than three decades now. The bond is more like a family.
Recognition and accolades
The recognition of his music began coming early on in life but perhaps what keeps his music constantly in demand is the fact that Purohit stayed true to his style of traditional garba. He never changed the essence of the style. While the younger generation may know garba as a form of dance with sticks on techno beats, the singer explains the origin of garba is far from the contemporary, Bollywood version as we see today. He says that the tradition started as devotional music performed in a single circle while a garbi was kept in the middle. Till this day whenever he performs he asks the promoters that he would not dilute the real form and reason behind garba. In what may come as a surprise to many, he does not use any modern music, contemporary costumes, fancy lights or high energy beats in his performance. What you get to see is pure, unadulterated, simple garba in its unique beauty. For many, he admits in the younger generation it comes as a surprise to see this form. As a newer awareness is seen towards preserving one’s heritage and history, he is hopeful that more young people would want to celebrate and understand the tradition of Garba. Recently the singer got his name patented to protect his unique art. The 65-year old music stalwart got himself registered under the Indian Trademark and Copyright Act. A name synonymous with Navratri celebrations not just in India but around the world, Purohit is now a brand with his name officially registered in trademark registry. After years of people playing his music without any permission, the singer felt it was an important step to take. As he continues to make melodious music his popularity continues to grow not only because of his rare melodious voice but also for his revival of the unique ancient art form of Garba.
