decisive victory for abortion rights in deeply conservative Kansas has boosted Democrats’ hopes that they can harness voter anger over efforts to limit or ban the procedure to prevail in competitive races and other U.S. state referendums in November. Political analysts and organizers had anticipated an uphill battle to defeat a Republican-backed constitutional amendment that would have enabled lawmakers to restrict abortion in Kansas. Instead, the primary election on Tuesday drew record turnout. Almost half of registered voters cast ballots, and nearly 60%

credited the success to winning support from moderate Republicans, independents and voters ambivalent about abortion -- in addition to Democrats, who make up only about 26% of registered Kansas voters. “We found common ground among diverse voting blocs and mobilized people across the political spectrum to vote no,” said Rachel Sweet, campaign manager for Kansans for Constitutional Freedom. Early results showed Kansas’ abortion rights campaign outperformed Democratic candidates from past elections across the state, a testament to bipartisan support. In 14 counties that went for Republican Donald Trump over Democrat Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election, the“no” vote prevailed.

Washington: A top US official on Wednesday called China’s military drills in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan irresponsible and warned of the danger of the situation spiraling out of control. “We believe that what China is doing here is not responsible,” said National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan in an interview with National Public Radio. He urged Beijing to de-escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait. China reacted with fury, announcing what it said were “necessary and just” military drills in the seas just off Taiwan’s coast -- some of the world’s busiest waterways. “Whenever a military engages in a series of activities that include the possibility of missile tests, of live fire exercises, of fighter jets buzzing around the skies and ships moving around on the seas, the possibility of some kind of incident is real,” Sullivan said.

The US Senate approved on Wednesday Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO, the most significant expansion of the 30-member alliance since the 1990s as it responds to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Senate voted 95 to 1 to support ratification of the two countries’ accession documents, easily surpassing the two-thirds majority of 67 votes required to support ratification of the two countries’ accession documents. Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in response to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, which has repeatedly warned both against joining the alliance. NATO’s 30 allies signed the accession protocol for them last month, allowing them to join the U.S.-led nuclear-armed alliance once its members ratify the decision. Ratification could take up to a year, although it has already been approved by a few countries, including Canada, Germany and Italy.

The US has urged its citizens to be vigilant against possible anti-American violence abroad following the killing of al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri. HiIndia Newsdesk

Al- Zawahiri death could prompt al-Qaeda supporters or other linked terror groups to target US facilities and personnel, said the state department. Zawahiri was killed by a US drone in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Sunday. He had helped mastermind the 9/11 attacks on the US in which nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. The 71-year-old Egyptian doctor took over al-Qaeda after the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011. The killing was confirmed on Monday by US President Joe Biden, who said Zawahiri had carved “a trail of murder and violence” against American citizens.

1,200-Year-Old Hindu Temple To Be Actor Dev Patel Breaks Up Knife Fight Restored In Pak After Long Court Battle Between Man And Woman In Australia HiIndia Newsdesk

Lahore: A 1,200-year-old Hindu temple in Pakistan’s Lahore city will be restored after “illegal occupants” were evicted from it following a lengthy court battle, the federal body overseeing minority worship places in the country said on Wednesday. The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) last month retrieved the possession of Valmiki Mandir (temple) situated near the famous Anarkali Bazaar Lahore from a Christian family. Besides Krishna Temple, Valmiki Temple

is the only functional temple in Lahore. The Christian family, which claims to have converted to Hinduism, had been facilitating only the Valmiki caste Hindus for worship at the temple for the last two decades. ETPB spokesperson Amir Hashmi told PTI that Valmiki Temple will be restored in accordance with a ‘master plan’ in the coming days. “Over 100 Hindus, some Sikh and Christian leaders today gathered at the Valmiki Temple. Hindus performed their religious rituals and had lungar (food) for the first time it was retrieved from the grabbers,” he said.

As secret ballot is used for V-P polls, members should vote for who they think is the better candidate, instead of simply following their party’s line, Alva, the joint opposition’s candidate, said in a video message two days before the election. Two days before members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha cast their votes to elect the 14th vice president of India, the joint opposition’s nominee Margaret Alva, in a video message on Thursday, urged them to vote for a candidate of their choice ‘without fear’ as party whip is not applicable in V-P polls. “It’s a privilege and an honour for me to be a candidate in the election to the post of the vice president of India, supported by a large number of political parties,” Alva said, also detailing her work as a member of both Houses, as well as Union minister and governor, over the last 50 years. Alva – a former governor of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Goa, respectively.

New Delhi: Arrested Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut’s wife, Varsha Raut, has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on money-laundering charges in an alleged scam in a housing project, it is learnt. This came just hours after Sanjay Raut’s ED custody was extended till August 8 by a a special court in Mumbai. The date for which Varsha Raut been summoned wasn’t

Four months ago, the ED — which alleges a Rs 1,000-crore scam in the redevelopment of Patra Chawl in Mumbai’s Goregaon — had attached ₹ 11 crore worth of assets of Varsha Raut and two of Sanjay Raut’s associates. These included a flat in Dadar held by Varsha Raut, besides eight plots in Alibaug that she held jointly with Swapna Patkar. China Holds Military Drills, Taiwan CJI NV Ramana recommends Justice UU Lalit as his successor Says “Ballistic Missiles” Fired

Taiwan said it was closely watching the Chinese drills and that it was prepared for conflict, but would not seek it. HiIndia Newsdesk

Beijing: China’s largest-ever military exercises encircling Taiwan kicked off Thursday, in a show of force straddling

vital international shipping lanes after a visit to the island by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi left Taiwan Wednesday after a trip that defied a series of stark threats from Beijing, which views the self-ruled island as its territory. Pelosi was the highest-profile elected US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, and said her trip made it “unequivocally clear” that the United States would not abandon a democratic ally. It sparked a furious reaction from Beijing, which vowed “punishment” and announced military drills in the seas around Taiwan -- some of the world’s busiest waterways. The exercises, which began around 12 pm (0400 GMT), involve “live-firing”, according to state media.

Chief Justice of India N V Ramana on Thursday recommended to the government the name of Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor. Official sources in Supreme Court said the CJI “personally handed over a copy of his letter of recommendation dated 03.08.2022” to Justice Lalit “in the

morning” on Thursday. The sources “recalled” that the CJI’s Secretariat received a communication dated August 3 from the office of the Union Minister of Law and Justice requesting him to recommend the name of his successor “yesterday (03.08.2022) at 2130 hrs”. As per convention, the incumbent CJI recommends the name of his successor only upon receiving the communication from the Law Ministry urging him/her to do so. CJI Ramana retires on August 26 following which Justice Lalit will take over as the 49th Chief Justice of India. He has a short tenure and will remain in office till November 8, 2022.

“Narendra Modi, Amit Shah Think We’ll Go Silent If...”: Rahul Gandhi

ongress MP Rahul Gandhi today slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over what he claimed was pressure tactics to silence him and other opposition voices using central agencies. Mr Gandhi was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case in June for nearly 50 hours over five days. His mother and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was also questioned by the central agency over alleged money laundering connected to the National Herald newspaper. “If you are talking about National Herald, the entire matter is about intimidation. Narendra Modi and Amit Shah think that with a little pressure we will go silent. But we won’t. Whatever Narendra Modi and Amit Shah are doing against democracy, we will stand our ground,” Mr Gandhi told reporters today as Congress MPs got ready to meet to discuss their strategy after the Enforcement Directorate sealed the office of Young Indian in Delhi over the case linked to National Herald. On a question by reporters about a threat by the BJP that he would be left with “no place to run,” Mr Gandhi shot back, “Who is talking about running? They are the one who talk of running. We won’t be intimidated. We are not scared of Narendra Modi, do whatever you want, it doesn’t matter. I will keep doing my job, that is to protect democracy, to maintain harmony in the country.” In June and July, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi were apparently asked hundreds of questions by the Enforcement Directorate on their involvement with National Herald newspaper and Young Indian Pvt Ltd. The National Herald case involves Young Indian’s takeover of Associated Journals Ltd, or AJL, the company that runs National Herald newspaper, and the dealings thereafter. In a complaint in the Delhi High Court, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had accused Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others of conspiring to misappropriate funds. The BJP had also hit back at massive protests by Congress workers and leaders while Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi were being questioned. The BJP had said the Congress was not protesting to save democracy, but to save Rahul Gandhi’s properties worth ₹ 2,000 crore. “Congress leaders have taken to the streets to put pressure an investigating agency openly because their corruption has been exposed,” Union Minister Smriti Irani said on June 13, when Rahul Gandhi was being questioned. “But no one is above the law, not even Rahul Gandhi,” she had said.

‘Who is real Shiv Sena’, SC asks EC not to decide on Shinde group’s plea

In a relief to Uddhav Thackeray, the Supreme Court on Thursday orally asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) not to decide a plea by Eknath Shinde group to recognise them as the real Shiv Sena.

New Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) In a relief to Uddhav Thackeray, the Supreme Court on Thursday orally asked the Election Commission of India (ECI) not to decide a plea by Eknath Shinde group to recognise them as the real Shiv Sena. A bench headed by Chief Justice N.V. Ramana and comprising Justices Krishna Murari and Hima Kohli asked the Election Commission not to take any precipitative action on the claim raised by Shinde group for recognising them as the real Shiv Sena party in the meanwhile. The top court told the ECI that if the Thackeray faction seeks time to file response to its notices on the Shindefaction petition, then it should consider their request keeping in mind the views expressed by the apex court. The bench told senior advocate Arvind Datar, representing ECI, “Let them file affidavits. But can’t you hold...let no precipitative action be taken... We are not passing any order. But at the same time don’t take any precipitative action...”

Datar submitted that the disqualification proceedings under the tenth schedule operate in a different territory and it does not affect the ECI’s power to decide the claim of rival factions for official recognition. The top court said it will decide by Monday whether to refer to a larger bench regarding the constitutional questions involved in the disqualification of MLAs arising from Maharashtra political scenario. Shinde faction moved the Election Commission seeking their recognition as the real Shiv Sena ahead of the BMC polls. However, the Thackeray faction has contested it saying that a few MLAs can’t decide about the entire political party. Top court was hearing petitions filed by the Shiv Sena and its rebel MLAs on the constitutional issues of splits, merger, defection and disqualification.

T

he killing of al-Qaeda head Ayman al-Zawahiri by the United States points to the use of a secret Hellfire missile to avoid collateral damage. As per the AFP report, al-Zawahiri was killed by two missiles fired at his Kabul home -- but pictures showed no sign of an explosion, and US officials say no one else was harmed. This shows that the US used the macabre Hellfire R9X, a warhead-less missile believed to be equipped with six razorlike blades, to kill him. These missiles do not explode but release knife-like blades hitting the targets with precision to avoid collateral damage to civilians. The Hellfire R9X, also called the flying Ginsu, causes no damage to the area as there is no explosive payload that it carries. It has become the US munition of choice for killing leaders of extremist groups while avoiding civilian casualties. The R9X first appeared in March 2017 when al-Qaeda senior leader Abu al-Khayr al-Masri was killed by a drone strike while travelling in a car in Syria. However, the Pentagon or CIA -- the two US agencies known to undertake targeted assassinations of extremist leaders -- have never publicly acknowledged it. Later, it was deployed earlier when US forces targeted an al-Qaida-linked trainer in Syria in 2020. According to reports, the US used the same weapon in 2019 too. The AGM-114 Hellfire missiles are air-to-ground, laser-guided, subsonic missiles with significant anti-tank capacity. The Hellfire missile has several variants, depending on its warhead, guidance system, and its physical variations. A latest and peculiar addition to the line of Hellfire missiles

Unlike a traditional Hellfire missile, it rarely left any marks—no scorches, or burns other than cracks or points of entry. The R9X is also called the Ninja bomb and it weighs about 45 kg. The missile can also be launched from drones helicopters, aircraft and Humvees used by the US forces for quick mobilisation of ground troops. The range of these missiles varies from 500 metres to 11 km depending on the variant being used. In this operation, the US used a drone to strike the target based on specific intelligence. Drone strikes took a big jump during former president Barack Obama’s tenure. The US policy of excessive use of drones has often triggered a controversy alleging civilian casualties, but with the use of Hellfire, collateral damage is minimised. These can be effectively launched by the MQ9 Reaper, also called Predator drones. These drones can detect targets using their inbuilt sensors and radars. They can carry deadly Hellfire missiles and laser-guided bombs, making them a potent weapon.

Taliban To Investigate US Claim, Says “No Trace” Of Al Qaeda Chief Killing Islamabad: The Taliban are investigating a US “claim” that al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed in a US drone strike in Kabul, a Taliban official said on Thursday, indicating the group’s leadership were not aware of his presence there. The United States killed Zawahiri with a missile fired from a drone while he stood on a balcony at his Kabul hideout on Sunday, US officials said, in the biggest blow to the terrorists since Osama bin Laden was shot dead more than a decade ago. “The government and the leadership wasn’t aware of what is being claimed, nor any trace there,” Suhail Shaheen, the designated Taliban representative to the United Nations, who is based in Doha, told journalists in a message. “Investigation is underway now to find out about the veracity of the claim,” he said, adding that the results of the investigation would be shared publicly. Taliban leaders have remained largely tight-lipped about the Sunday drone strike and have not confirmed the presence or death of Zawahiri in Kabul. Top Taliban leaders have been holding lengthy discussions about how to respond to the US drone strike, three sources in the group said. How the Taliban react could have significant repercussions as the group seeks international legitimacy and access to billions of dollars in frozen funds, following their defeat of a US-backed government a year ago.

The United States killed Zawahiri with a missile fired from a drone while he stood on a balcony at his Kabul hideout on Sunday, US officials said. Zawahiri, an Egyptian doctor, was closely involved in the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States and was one of the world’s most wanted men. His death in Kabul raises questions about whether he

received sanctuary from the Taliban, who had assured the United States as part of a 2020 agreement on the withdrawal of US-led forces that they would not harbour other terrorist groups. Shaheen said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan the name the Taliban use for the country and their government - was committed to the agreement, signed in the Qatari capital, Doha. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Taliban had “grossly violated” the agreement by hosting and sheltering Zawahiri.

Workers of an apparel manufacturing unit in the Brandix Special Economic Zone at Atchyutapuram near here, who fell sick on August 2 night due to what was suspected to be a mysterious gas leak, were stable as they were being treated in different hospitals. With the state government yet to issue a statement on the incident, the opposition parties lashed out at the former over its alleged failure to prevent such mishaps. According to the latest count, some 95 workers fell sick with nausea and vomiting after they inhaled a pungent gas that filled the air at the manufacturing unit on Tuesday night.

Chennai, (IANS) Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday said the state police have slapped the National Security Act (NSA) on the three people who were arrested for harvesting the eggs of a minor girl. The three arrested include the mother of the minor girl, her (mother’s) paramour, and a broker who was involved in scouting clients for the perpetrators of the crime.

Ma Subramanian while speaking to IANS said, “The three who were arrested from Erode for harvesting the Oocytes of a minor girl are slapped with the National Security Act, which would provide one-year detention and we have also gone for an appeal against the stay granted to the hospitals involved in the egg harvesting.” The health minister also said that the state will not back out from the plan to shut down the hospitals involved in such a crime. Two of Kerala’s topmost politicians, who have had a very long innings and are in last lap of their distinguished political career, are seriously engaged in doing their best to launch their sons’ political career, before they bow out from electoral politics. HiIndia Newsdesk

Thiruvananthapuram, (IANS) Two of Kerala’s topmost politicians, who have had a very long innings and are in last lap of their distinguished political career, are seriously engaged in doing their best to launch their sons’ political career, before they bow out from electoral politics. First one is 78-year-old two-time former Congress Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, who just the other day wrote himself into record books by becoming the longest serving legislator by beating late K.M. Mani. Since 1970, Chandy, who has been representing the Puthupally assembly constituency and has won a record 12 assembly elections, is seriously mulling to place his son- Chandy Oommen to field him in either 2024 Lok Sabha polls, or in 2026 assembly polls. The other leader is 81-year-old Kerala Congress supremo P.J. Joseph who represents the Thodupuzha assembly constituency in Idukki district and like Chandy he first won his election in 1970, but he lost the polls in 1991 and 2001 assembly elections. Joseph is presently into his 10th term as a legislator and he has already set the ball rolling to field his son Appu John Joseph, who in all likelihood will be contesting in 2026 assembly polls. However gone are the days, when top-notch Congress-led United Democratic Front leaders could place their son into the father’s shoes and the only person who managed to escape from the ire of the average aspiring politicians aiming for a seat was K. Muraleedharan, son of legendary Congress leader K. Karunakaran. Karunakaran first placed his son when he was the be all and end all of the Congress party in Kerala in the eighties, but he had to beat a hasty retreat when he tried to place his daughter Padmaja Venugopal too into electoral politics. Despite Padmaja being fielded in one Lok Sabha and two assembly polls, she was unable to win at these polls and is now an office bearer of State Congress party, still waiting for that elusive victory, when Muraleedharan has had a few terms in the Lok Sabha and won twice to the assembly.

Karachi: Manisha Ropeta is making heads turn not only because she is among the few female officers in authoritative positions in Sindh Police but also for the fact that the 26-year-old is the first woman from the minority Hindu community in Pakistan to become a Deputy Superintendent of Police. In Pakistan’s male dominated society and culture, it is difficult for women to join professions considered as “manly” such as the police force. “From childhood I and my sisters have seen the same old system of patriarchy where girls are told if they want to get educated and work it can only be as teachers or doctors,” Ropeta from Sindh’s Jacobabad area says. Belonging to a middle class family from Jacobabad in interior Sindh province, Ropeta says she wants to end this sentiment that girls from good families shouldn’t have anything to do with the police or district courts.

ENTERTA

Italian win for Richa Chadha When I saw Junaid act, I thought mera chance gaya and Ali Fazal Aamir Khan

I

t’s difficult to imagine any other actor in a role essayed by Aamir Khan. Such is his ability to make every character his own. But things are different with ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’. With director Advait Chandan’s adaptation of ‘Forrest Gump’ (1994), Khan steps into a role immortalised by Tom Hanks. The past few years were admittedly not easy on Khan. “To play this character, I had to get into his mind. I am 57, and had to play a 22-year-old. I had [to depict] the different stages of his life. To get that innocence [of youth] was tough,” he begins. His obvious point of reference to play the endearing protagonist was Hanks in the original film. But the superstar surprises us when he says that he found another source of inspiration — son Junaid Khan. “Since it was a tricky film, I told Advait that I wanted to see a test shoot. I suggested that he shoot seven to eight scenes with Junaid. When Kiran [Rao, producer] and I saw the test shoot, we were blown away by Junaid’s performance. He had become Laal. I thought mera toh chance gaya,” he laughs. The actor then showed the 20-minute test shoot to his friends in the industry, trying to gauge whether Junaid would be a better fit than him. “Almost 98 per cent of them said, ‘You should take Junaid for the role.’ So, I shaved my beard that I had grown for six months. We decided to make the film with him. But Atul [Kulkarni, writer] and Adi [Chopra] said no to the idea. [They reasoned] that it’s not a plot-heavy film; since it’s an episodic film, a newcomer won’t be able to carry it. Junaid too said, ‘Your budget is high. You can’t cast a newcomer like me.’ So, I was back on the project. But in those eight scenes, Junaid had picked the sur. I got the film’s sur from him.”

Chadha and Fazal to be honoured at the Maratea Film fest for their contribution to Indian cinema

In her 14-year career so far, Richa Chadha has been a part of fascinating stories — from ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ (2012) to ‘Masaan’ (2015), from the ‘Fukrey’ franchise to ‘Inside Edge’. The drive to excel is shared by her actor-boyfriend Ali Fazal, too, who successfully straddles his career in Hindi cinema and the West. Last year, the duo joined forces to launch their production house, Pushing Buttons Studios, which

will give a platform to new directors, thus bringing distinct voices to the fore. Keeping their contribution to Indian entertainment in mind, the Maratea Film Festival in Italy will honour Chadha and Fazal with the Outstanding International Talent Award at this year’s edition. The week-long gala, which kicked off on July 27 in the Italian town, will conclude today with the award presentation ceremony.

If I’m uncomfortable with being a sex symbol, and being objectified, which I have been, right from the beginning from my career, then I shouldn’t be here. I was not bothered or uncomfortable with it, I was surprised, yes. I just did a music video, a song called Shringaar, and I don’t know why they called me—and it is an objectification of the male persona, and I don’t know why they took me at the age of fifty, and not someone at the age of twenty.

Justin Bieber performs for the first time since being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome

C

anadian singer and songwriter Justin Bieber recently returned to the stage in Italy at the Lucca Summer Festival, marking his first performance in nearly two months after he had to cancel several shows following his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis which causes partial facial paralysis. According to Fox News, Bieber appeared on Sunday night to give an energetic performance to his Italian fans who tweeted clips of Bieber dancing shirtless in the spotlight while performing songs from his catalogue of hits. Seems like the 28-year-old singer is on the mend as his tour website has updated stops to include concerts in Europe before heading to South America in September. He’s also set to perform two shows in South Africa followed by more than a dozen performances in the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand by the end of the year. Previously, in June, after cancelling a few shows on his Justice World Tour, Bieber revealed on Instagram last month he’s struggled with movements on the right side of his face, including blinking his eye, moving his nostril, or simply smiling from the right side of his mouth., reported Fox News.

NYC Hospital Performs First-Ever HIV-Positive Heart Transplant HiIndia Newsdesk

NEW YORK, NY — A New York City hospital performed the world’s first heart transplant between two HIV-positive people, the organization announced in a news release. The procedure was done at Montefiore Health System in the Bronx. Hospital officials said that the recipient of the donor’s heart, a woman in her 60s, suffered from advanced heart failure and underwent a heart and kidney transplant. In 2013, the HIV Organ Policy Equity Act allowed people living with HIV to donate their organs to an HIV-positive recipient. Montefiore is one of only 25 centers in the United States eligible to offer such a surgery, officials said. “Thanks to significant medical advances, people living with HIV are able to

control the disease so well that they can now save the lives of other people living with this condition. This surgery is a milestone in the history of organ donation and offers new hope to people who once had nowhere to turn,” Dr. Ulrich Jorde said in the release. According to Montefiore, 60,000 to 100,000 people in the United States could benefit from a new heart. Despite the need, approximately 3,800 transplants were performed in 2021.

Wawa To Pay $8M For Credit, Debit Card Data Breach By Hackers HiIndia Newsdesk

NEW JERSEY, NJ — Wawa agreed to pay $8 million to end an investigation into a 2019 data breach that impacted 34 million customers, including patrons in New Jersey stores, officials announced. New Jersey will receive about $2.5 million as part of the multistate settlement. Wawa failed to employ “reasonable” information-security measures to prevent the massive data breach, according to New Jersey Acting Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro. This is the third-largest credit cardbreach settlement brought against a corporation by a group of attorneys general — behind only Target’s $18.5 million deal in 2017 and Home Depot’s $17.5 million agreement in 2020,

Indian American Gets Sentenced 3 Years In Federal Prison For Defrauding Elderly

according to Shapiro. Wawa’s data breach sparked an FBI investigation and had previously led to Wawa disbursing $9 million in cash and customer gift cards following a class action lawsuit. The company failed to take appropriate measures that would’ve stopped hackers from putting malware on the company’s payment processing servers, officials said. As a result, the malware gave hackers access to Wawa customer information

between April 18 to Dec. 12, 2019. New Jersey stores represented 27.2 percent of all Wawa card transactions during that period — more than any other state and just ahead of Pennsylvania’s 27 percent. The recent settlement’s terms require Wawa to create a comprehensive information security program within six months. A credentialed expert in the field must oversee the program, which will have to include security awareness training for all Wawa personnel with key responsibilities for its implementation. Additionally, the program must incorporate data protection “Best Practices,” while also employing controls to ensure company systems are only accessible to those with appropriate credentials. Controls include multi-factor authentication, one-time passcodes and locationspecific requirements.

estricting eating to a 10-hour window during the daytime could have beneficial health benefits for people with type 2 diabetes. That’s according to research published today that reports that a time-restricted eating (TRE) protocol can result in improvements to metabolic health in adults with type 2 diabetes, including a decrease in 24-hour glucose levels. “A daytime 10-hour TRE regimen for three weeks decreases glucose levels and prolongs the time spent in the normal blood sugar range in adults with type 2 diabetes as compared with spreading daily food intake over at least 14 hours. These data highlight the potential benefit of TRE in type 2 diabetes,” the study authors wrote. Previous research has indicated that time-restricted eating can have positive metabolic effects in people with obesity or who are overweight. Researchers said restricting eating to a window of fewer than 12 hours can decrease blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and increase fat burning. The authors of the new study note that in many Western countries, food is available 24 hours a day and a tendency to spread eating out over a long period of time can be problematic. “In Western society, most people tend to spread their daily food intake over a minimum of 14 hours likely resulting in the absence of a true, nocturnal fasted state. Restricting food intake to a predefined time window (typically less than 12 hours)… restores the cycle of daytime eating and prolonged fasting during the evening and night,” the study authors wrote. treatment to keep people safe, the officials said. The declaration, effective immediately, will allow DOHMH to issue emergency commissioner’s orders under the New York City Health Code and amend provisions of the Health Code to provide for measures to help slow the spread. The officials said that New York City is currently the epicentre of the outbreak, and it is estimated that approximately 150,000 New Yorkers may currently be at risk for monkeypox exposure.

“We will continue to work with our federal partners to secure more doses as soon as they become available. This outbreak must be met with urgency, action, and resources, both nationally and globally, and this declaration of a public health emergency reflects the seriousness of the moment,” they said. “We are also working with partners at every level of government, to obtain as many additional doses as possible, as quickly as possible, so that we can protect New Yorkers during this growing outbreak,” the authorities said. L a s t w e e k , t h e Wo r l d H e a l t h Organisation had declared monkeypox a global public health emergency and called on nations to work closely with communities of men who have sex with men and adopt measures that protect the health, human rights, and dignity of affected communities. “We have an outbreak that has spread around the world rapidly, through new modes of transmission, about which we understand too little, and which meets the criteria in the International Health Regulations... For all of these reasons, I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus had said. At the time, 3040 cases of monkeypox had been reported to WHO, from 47 countries. Since then, the outbreak has continued to grow, and there are now more than 16 thousand reported cases from 75 countries and territories, and five deaths, he had said adding that in light of the evolving outbreak, the committee was reconvened on Thursday to review the latest data and advise me accordingly. Ghebreyesus had said though he is declaring a public health emergency of international concern, for the moment this is an outbreak that is concentrated among men who have sex with men, especially those with multiple sexual partners”. That means that this is an outbreak that can be stopped with the right strategies in the right groups. It’s therefore essential that all countries work closely with communities of men who have sex with men, to design and deliver effective information and services, and to adopt measures that protect the health, human rights and dignity of affected communities, the WHO Chief had said. too do our bodies. If we don’t align our eating habits with the best/healthiest rhythms, it can increase our risk for chronic diseases and inflammation,” Hunnes told Healthline. “When we have food available 24/7, much of it highly processed, it is stressful on our bodies, and it is not following the healthy circadian rhythms/homeostasis our bodies like to be in,” she added. “So, when we eat out of rhythm, it’s highly stressful, and decreases cardiometabolic health, and can affect our hormone response (including insulin) and worse health outcomes, especially for people with type 2 diabetes.” Typically, when a person isn’t eating the body uses up glycogen to fuel itself. Glycogen is a form of stored carbohydrate found in the liver and also stored in muscles. When the body uses up the glycogen, it will then move on to free fatty acids as the next form of fuel. This in turn produces ketones, which may reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, and ultimately, improve glucose levels. “The goal of intermittent fasting for those with diabetes is to fuel the body’s energy by burning fat stores and to lose extra weight, improve insulin sensitivity, and lower blood sugar levels. The study results are consistent with the goals of intermittent fasting,” Lauri Wright, PhD, RDN, the chair of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of North Florida, told Healthline. “For the most part, intermittent fasting is safe. It is not appropriate for people with type I diabetes, a history of eating disorders, pregnant women, or children under 18,” she noted.

“Special 2nd August... I’ve Changed DP”: PM Urges Indians To Do The Same

HiIndia Newsdesk

The Prime Minister appealed to the citizens to make “Har Ghar Tiranga” a mass movement by using ‘Tricolour’ as their profile pictures on social media between August 2 and 15. New Delhi: Ahead of Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today changed the display picture on his social media accounts to “Tiranga” (tricolour or national flag) and urged the citizens to do the same. “It is a special 2nd August today! At a time when we are marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, our nation is all set for #HarGharTiranga, a collective movement to celebrate our Tricolour. I have changed the DP on my social media pages and urge you all to do the same,” PM Modi tweeted. The Prime Minister also paid his respects to Pingali Venkayya, who had designed the national flag, on his birth anniversary.

New Delhi: A third case of Monkeypox surfacing in Delhi, the Arvind Kejriwal government has ordered the setting up of isolation wards for patients and those suspected of contracting the disease. So far, eight confirmed cases have been detected in India. The Delhi government has directed three private hospitals to set up isolation

rooms, sources said. The hospitals are MD City Hospital in North Delhi, Kailash Deepak Hospital in East Delhi and Batra Hospital in South Delhi. Each hospital will have to prepare five rooms for suspected cases and five rooms for confirmed cases. The Centre has formed a national task force to monitor the development of diagnostics and vaccines for the management of Monkeypox. The Indian Council of Medical Research or ICMR has successfully isolated the Monkeypox virus and an expression of interest has been invited from research institutions, vaccine and diagnostic kits manufacturers to develop a vaccine and diagnostic kits.

Don’t escalate tension: US to China HiIndia Newsdesk

The White House warned China to tone down its rhetoric on Monday in regards to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi potentially visiting Taiwan, underscoring that there was no reason for Beijing to escalate tension. Despite Beijing seeing the visit as highly provocative and an uptake of Chinese military presence in proximity to the island, the White House emphasized it was ultimately Pelosi’s decision whether to travel to Taiwan or not.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s brother Prahlad Modi, who is also the vice president of All India Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Federation, on Tuesday staged a dharna here with various demands of the organisation. US Will “Pay The Price” If Nancy Pelosi Visits Taiwan, China Warns HiIndia Newsdesk

Beijing: China said Tuesday that the United States will “pay the price” if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan during her Asia trip. Pelosi was in Malaysia on Tuesday, the second stop in a tour that has sparked rage in Beijing after reports of a potential Taipei visit. China considers Taiwan its territory and has indicated through repeated warnings that it would view a Pelosi visit as a major provocation. “The US side will bear the responsibility and pay the price for undermining China’s sovereign security interests,” foreign ministry spokeswoman

Hua Chunying said at a regular press briefing in Beijing. American officials often make discreet visits to Taiwan to show support, but Pelosi would be a higher-profile visitor than any in recent history. Reports of her plans have sent US-China tensions soaring. In a call with US President Joe Biden last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned the United States against “playing with fire” on Taiwan.
