US wants UN Security Council be made more inclusive
White House gains partners to end US hunger within a decade
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Tuesday stressed the need for making the United Nations Security Council more inclusive. “We recognize that to meet the challenges we face, members of the UN must not only uphold the charter, but also modernise the institution, including by making the Security Council more inclusive,” Blinken told reporters at a joint news conference with visiting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. “That’s why, in his address to the General Assembly, President (Joe) Biden expressed his support for increasing the number of both permanent and non-permanent representatives of the Security Council, a long-standing goal of India,” he said.
The Biden administration is counting on a variety of private-sector partnerships to help fund and implement its ambitious goal of ending hunger in America by 2030. President Joe Biden is hosting a conference Wednesday on
hunger, nutrition and health, the first by the White House since 1969. That conference, under President Richard Nixon, was a pivotal moment that influenced U.S. food policy agenda for 50 years. The conference hosted by Nixon, a Republican, led to a major
US Feds want psychological tests for parents of separated kids
The Biden administration is asking that parents of children separated at the U.S.-Mexico border undergo another round of psychological evaluations to measure how traumatized they were by the Trump-era policy, court documents show.
The request comes in a lawsuit filed by migrants seeking compensation from the government after thousands of children were taken from parents

expansion of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly known as food stamps, and gave rise to the Women, Infants and Children program, which serves half the babies born in the U.S. by providing their mothers with parenting advice, breastfeeding support and food assistance. This year’s conference hosted by Biden, a Democrat, focuses on his goal of essentially ending food insecurity for all Americans by decade’s end. It also seeks to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and physical activity so that fewer people are afflicted with diabetes, obesity, hypertension and other diet-related diseases.

Rescuers in Nepal are searching for the famed US mountaineer Hilaree Nelson after she went missing on the world’s eighth tallest mountain.
Ms Nelson reportedly fell into a deep crevasse during a ski descent on Monday.
The North Face-sponsored athlete had earlier reached the summit of Mount Manaslu in Nepal with her partner.
On the same day, one person was killed and more than a dozen injured in an avalanche lower down on the same peak.
While search operations were hampered by bad weather on Monday, by Tuesday morning Nepalese rescue workers were able to use a helicopter to search for Ms Nelson.
SAN DIEGO — President Joe Biden on Wednesday kept the nation’s cap on refugee admissions at 125,000 for the 2023 budget year, despite pressure from advocates to raise it even higher to meet the need after falling far short of that target this year.Refugees advocates have been pushing the Biden administration
to do more to restore the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. The more than four-decade-old program suffered deep cuts under the Trump administration, which slashed admissions to a record low of 15,000. Biden raised the cap to four times that amount, but so far fewer than 20,000 refugees have been admitted this budget year, which ends Sept. 30. That number excludes the roughly 180,000 Ukrainians and Afghans who came to the United States via a legal process called humanitarian parole that got them into the country more quickly than the traditional refugee program but only allows for stays of up to two years. Refugees are provided a path to permanent residency. Their admissions are determined by the president each year, and federal funding for resettlement agencies is based on the number of people they resettle in a given year.
Washington, Sep 28 (IANS) Over 14.7 million children in the US have tested positive for Covid-19 since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020, according to the latest report by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Children’s Hospital Association.Over 289,000 of these cases have been added in the past four weeks, Xinhua news agency quoted the report published on Tuesday as saying.Approximately 6.85 million reported cases have been added in 2022, it added.
Chinese yuan: Currency hits record lows against US dollar
China’s yuan has hit fresh record lows against the surging US dollar. The internationally-traded yuan fell to its lowest level since data first became available in 2011.
China’s domestic currency also reached its weakest point since the 2008 global financial crisis. It comes as the dollar continues to rise in value against other major currencies, after the US central bank increased interest rates again earlier this month. Meanwhile on Wednesday, major stock market indexes across Asia fell sharply. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index closed 3.4% lower, Japan’s benchmark Nikkei index closed 1.5% lower and the Kospi in South Korea ended the day down by 2.4%.

N Korea test launches missile on eve of Harris trip to Seoul
HiIndia Newsdesk
South Korea says North Korea has fired a ballistic missile toward its eastern waters a day before a visit by U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile was launched Wednesday but gave no further details.
It was the second missile launched by North Korea this week. Harris is to visit the demilitarized zone separating the rival Koreas during her visit to South Korea. The launch also comes as U.S. and South Korean navy ships are conducting drills off the Korean Peninsula’s east coast.

S.Korea to shun Russian rockets, to go with Musk’s SpaceX
Seoul, (IANS) South Korea has decided to cancel plans to launch satellites using Russian rockets later this year amid the international community’s sanctions on Russia’s space programme over the Ukrainian war, a government document showed on Wednesday.
The government is most likely to sign deals with Elon Muks-run SpaceX and the European Space Agency for the launches.
The terms of the current deals with Russia remain confidential due to five-year non-disclosure agreements, reports Yonhap news agency.

the strength of the U.S.-South Korean alliance and the U.S. commitment to “stand beside” South Korea in the face of any North Korea threats.
U.S. and South Korean navy ships are also conducting drills off South Korea’s east coast in a show of force against North Korea. The four-day exercise, which began Monday, involves the nuclearpowered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. It is the first training exercise by the allies involving a U.S. aircraft carrier near the Korean Peninsula since 2017.
Ishaq Dar returns as Pak Finance Minister - Nawaz Sharif is next
nearly five years in self-imposed exile after he was accused with corruption on assets beyond means and evasion of taxes by the Pakistan accountability court during Imran Khan’s premiership tenure. However, after the ouster of Imran Khan through a no-confidence vote in the parliament by the joint opposition alliance called Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) and PML-N led coalition government under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif; Ishaq Dar has not only paved the way to his return to the country after getting his passport released and reinstated, he has come back to take the most important and critical ministry of finance, with an aim to take the country out of the worsening economic turmoil.
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman named prime minister

Wellington: (IANS) The New Zealand Westpac McDermott Miller Employment Confidence Index (ECI), released on Wednesday, rose by 6.7 points to 115.2 in the third quarter, the highest level for the index since June 2019.
Perceptions about job opportunities remain the strongest aspect of the survey, said Michael Gordon, acting chief economist for Westpac, one of New Zealand’s major bank, reports Xinhua news agency.
“This likely reflects the high degree of churn among existing roles, even as outright growth in employment has stalled,” Gordon said.More households reported a lift in earnings over the last year, he said.
Saudi Arabia’s powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been appointed prime minister - a post that is traditionally held by the king.
The 37-year-old son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz, 86, is already seen the de facto ruler of the oil-rich Gulf state.
A royal decree announcing his promotion from deputy PM and defence minister cited an exception to the Basic Law.
An official told Reuters news agency the move was in line with the king’s previous delegation of duties to him.
“The crown prince... already supervises the main executive bodies of the state
Ali Shihabi, a Saudi analyst close to the royal court, tweeted that Mohammed bin Salman’s promotion “formalises his actual role and eliminated previous protocol issues of seniority with other heads of government”, adding: “He ranks now as a head of government de jure, not just de facto.”
The king, who has been admitted to hospital twice this year, will continue to chair the cabinet meetings he attends.
The decree named another of his sons, Prince Khalid bin Salman, as the new defence minister. A third, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, remains in the key role of energy minister in the world’s biggest oil exporter.
Few people outside Saudi Arabia had heard of Mohammed bin Salman before his father became king in 2015.
He has won plaudits for some of the social and economic reforms he has overseen in the conservative Gulf kingdom, including lifting the ban on women driving and seeking to diversify the economy away from oil.
The four days of stage-managed referendums on joining Russia in occupied parts of Ukraine, which wrap up on Tuesday, blended raw intimidation tactics, including armed men in ski masks at polling stations, Orwellian messaging and efforts at festivities, such as thinly attended concerts on central squares.
The referendums were a show of supposed democracy by Russia, but one that is likely to have chilling real-world consequences. Results are expected to claim that a majority of residents voted to join Russia, with the Kremlin then formally announcing annexation as soon as this week.
Afghanistan: Taliban deputy in girls’ school ban appeal
A senior member of the Talibanrun government in Afghanistan on Tuesday called on Afghanistan’s new rulers to reopen schools for girls beyond the sixth grade, saying there is no valid reason in Islam for the ban. The appeal from Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, the Taliban deputy foreign minister, came during a top Taliban gathering in Kabul. It was a rare moderate voice amid the harsh measures imposed by the Taliban since they overran the country and seized power in August 2021.
Nasa spacecraft crashes into asteroid
A Nasa spacecraft rammed an asteroid at blistering speed on Monday in an unprecedented dress rehearsal for the day a killer rock menaces Earth.
The galactic grand slam occurred at a harmless asteroid 9.6 million kilometres away, with the spacecraft named Dart ploughing into the small space rock at 22,500 kmph. Scientists expected the impact to carve out a crater, hurl streams of rocks and dirt into space and, most importantly, alter the asteroid’s orbit.

There’s an appointment wait-time of 833 days for applications from Delhi and 848 days from Mumbai for visitor visas, shows the US State Department’s website. Gehlot opts out of race, apologises to Sonia
has managed to hold on to the post of Rajasthan Chief Minister despite a massive, embarrassing revolt that would not have been possible without his support. More than 90 MLAs threatened mass resignation over reports that if Mr Gehlot ran for Congress president, he would be replaced by his rival Sachin Pilot in Rajasthan.
Ashok Gehlot dropping out of the race means a third candidate for Congress president, who has the blessings of the Gandhis, could be named soon. Nominations close tomorrow for the first Congress election in over two decades with non-Gandhi candidates.
So far, it looks like a Digvijaya Singh versus Shashi Tharoor contest in the October 17 election. Both will file their nominations tomorrow.
New Delhi: Ashok Gehlot today apologised to Sonia Gandhi and said he will not run for Congress president, taking “moral responsibility” for the
rebellion in Rajasthan by MLAs loyal to him. He also said whether he remains Chief Minister is up to Sonia Gandhi. With his abject apology, Ashok Gehlot

“Extremely Dangerous” Hurricane Makes Florida Landfall, Cars Submerged
India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah was on Thursday ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a back stress fracture, dealing a massive blow to team’s chances at the ICC flagship event starting next month in Australia.
A BCCI official told PTI that Bumrah will be forced out of action for six months due to the back injury.
“Bumrah is not going to play the T20 World Cup for sure. He has a serious back condition. It’s a stress fracture and he could be out for a period of six months,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. It is understood that either Deepak Chahar or Mohammed Shami could replace Bumrah in the main squad.
Punta Gorda: Hurricane Ian made landfall on the southwest coast of Florida as a monster Category 4 storm on Wednesday with powerful winds and torrential rains threatening to cause “catastrophic” damage and flooding. The National Hurricane Center said the eye of the “extremely dangerous” hurricane slammed into the barrier island of Cayo Costa, west of the city of Fort Myers, at 3.05 pm (1905 GMT).
Dramatic television footage showed churning water submerging roads and sweeping away cars as the hurricane pounded the coastal city of Naples to the south of Fort Myers. The NHC said Ian was packing maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour (240 kilometers per hour) when it
made landfall and was already “causing catastrophic storm surge, winds and flooding in the Florida peninsula.” Ian is expected to affect several million people across Florida and in the southeastern states of Georgia and South Carolina and may have already claimed its first casualties. The US Border Patrol said 20 migrants were missing after their boat sank. Four Cubans who survived swam to shore in the Florida Keys and three were rescued at sea by the coast guard. As hurricane conditions spread, forecasters warned of a looming once-in-a-generation calamity. “This is going to be a storm we talk about for many years to come,” said National Weather Service director Ken Graham. “It’s a historic event.”

White House looking into recommendations to reduce Green Card adjudication and processing time
Washington: The White House is looking into the recommendations of a presidential commission to reduce the adjudication and processing of Green Card applications to just six months and remove all the backlogs by April 2023, a proposal if implemented would benefit hundreds and thousands of immigrant families, in particular, those from countries like India and China.
The recommendations were made in May this year by the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders. On Friday, the commission released its inaugural report detailing recommendations that were approved on May 12 and transmitted to the President on August 24. The White House Domestic Policy Council is currently reviewing the recommendation before it can be sent to President Joe Biden for his decision. rd, known officially as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to

Silicon Valley-based Indian American entrepreneur Ajay Jain Bhutoria, who has been a Biden supporter from day one of his campaign, based on the feedback received from the community had moved the proposal on the issue during the first meeting of the commission in May this year. His proposal was unanimously accepted by the commission. The recommendations, if accepted and implemented by the White House, would come as a game changer for hundreds and thousands of immigrant families, in particular, those from countries like India and China. According to the commission’s report, because of COVID-19-related closures and staffing limitations as well as the continued effect of the 2017 travel bans, processing green cards up to the annual cap has been difficult.
70 women from Punjab trapped in UAE, Oman, claims Dubai bizman Surinder Pal Singh Oberoi
Dubai-based philanthropist Dr Surinder Pal Singh Oberoi claimed that over 400 Indian women, including 70 from Punjab, were trapped in the UAE and Oman after unscrupulous travel agents deserted them to fend for themselves in foreign land.
He added that a fortnight ago he had met India’s Ambassador to Muscat Amit Narang to discuss the modalities to be adopted for repatriation. He said earlier he had met PM Narendra Modi in August and had apprised him of the condition of these women. He added he
had also met Union Minister Hardeep Puri. “Being an ex-IFS officer, Puri fully understands the trials and tribulations faced by the girls. He has assured me that he would take up the matter with the authorities in Oman and the UAE,” he said. “Ambassador Narang has assured me of his full cooperation. He told me that by the time his officials get the documentation prepared of say 25 of them, 50 more penniless, physically abused and emotionally drained young girls would arrive at the Embassy seeking a safe haven,” said the construction magnate.

The Department of Tourism confirmed that the avalanche hit at 11:30 am on Monday.
Indian climber Baljeet Kaur was among the injured, The Himalayan Times newspaper reported.
PM Modi urged to release Sikhs languishing in Indian jails for over 30 years
In 80s and 90s, most of them committed political-driven crimes in Punjab in a militant environment which was created by the Congress.
At least one climber was killed and 12 others, including an Indian, were injured when an avalanche struck them at the base camp of Mt Manaslu in Nepal on Monday, according to media reports. The Department of Tourism confirmed that the avalanche hit at 11:30 am on Monday. Indian climber Baljeet Kaur was among the injured, The Himalayan Times newspaper reported.
According to Gorkha Police, the deceased has been identified as Anup Rai, a climbing assistant.
Sources told local media that Sherpa climbers from Seven Summit Treks, Satori Adventure, Imagine Nepal Treks, Elite Expedition, and 8K Expeditions, among others, were injured. Pemba Sherpa from 8K Expedition
told the newspaper earlier that Indian climber Kaur and her Sherpa guide both suffered minor injuries and were safe, the report said earlier.
The Tourism Department is yet to establish contact with the officials at the incident site, The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported, quoting the Director of the department.
The avalanche struck the route just below Camp IV of Mount Manaslu when the climbers were ferrying logistics to the high camps.
Rescue operations are underway and various helicopter services are conducting aerial searches.
Persistently bad weather throughout the day had hampered land and air rescue efforts.
Washington,: The ‘Sikhs of America’ has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release all Sikhs who are languishing in Indian jails for more than 30 years. In a letter to Modi, the Sikhs of America urged the prime minister to set up a committee to look into the issue and also to find out how many such Sikhs are languishing in prisons. Many of these Sikhs are in jails despite having completed their court mandate, it alleged.
By some accounts their number is close to 800, claimed the letter submitted to visiting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at an event here on Sunday. “In 80s and 90s, most of them committed political-driven crimes in Punjab in a
militant environment which was created by the Congress. They were booked under TADA and other anti-terrorist draconian laws of the Congress regime,” it alleged. “Every year different political parties bring this issue up, to get votes and manipulate the masses,” said the letter signed by Jasdip Singh, chairman of Sikhs of America and its president Kamaljit Singh Soni.
The Sikhs of America urged the prime minister to “form a committee to investigate” this issue and ascertain the number of “Bandi Sikhs” in different jails. Noting that the government led by Prime Minister Modi has celebrated the sacrifices of the Sikhs and Sikh Gurus on numerous occasions, the Sikhs of America wrote, “In this spirit, we request you to please give clemency and pardon to these Bandi Sikhs who are languishing in jails for more than 30 years.”

Rupee At New Record Low, Inches Towards 82 Per Dollar
“Ashok Gehlot Won’t Resign,” Says Key Aide Ahead Of Sonia Gandhi Meet
Over 90 MLAs had on Sunday threatened mass resignation, objecting to Sachin Pilot stepping into Ashok Gehlot’s shoes.
did not discuss his resignation. He is not resigning today, he will not resign in future,” said state minister Pratap Singh Kachariyawas. Another minister, Vishvendra Singh, said: “Mr Gehlot will complete a full five years in Rajasthan.”
Many saw this as a hint that Ashok Gehlot does not want to run for Congress president.
Over 90 MLAs had on Sunday threatened mass resignation, objecting to Sachin Pilot stepping into Mr Gehlot’s shoes.
The rupee hit a new record low as the dollar soared to fresh highs on Wednesday after the White House downplayed the possibility of a currency deal to weaken the dollar, and hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve policymakers added more fuel to the skyrocketing greenback.
PTI reported that the domestic currency fell 40 paise to an all-time low of 81.93 against the US dollar in early trade.
Bloomberg showed the rupee last at 81.9050 per dollar, after hitting 81.9350, its weakest level ever, compared to its previous close of 81.5788.
In the previous session, the rupee had clawed back from record lows to end with modest gains. But what has not helped the domestic currency is India ruling out any changes to tax policies that would have made it easier for the nation’s bonds to be included in global indexes and roll in billions of dollars.

The rebellion embarrassed the Congress and, according to reports, dismayed the Gandhis. There was also strong speculation that Ashok Gehlot, the choice of the Gandhis for the Congress top job, is out of the race.
But top party sources said Ashok Gehlot, 71, is “still in contention for the post of Congress president and not ruled out”.
Last evening, Congress leaders Ambika Soni and Anand Sharma, after a meeting with Sonia Gandhi, spoke with Ashok Gehlot to “resolve the crisis that has been created.
At the core of the crisis is Mr Gehlot’s refusal to give up the post of Rajasthan Chief Minister.

This was announced by the VCK founder leader and MP, Thol Thirumavalavan in a statement on Tuesday.
The RSS is holding processions in 50 centres across the state. The MP said that Tamil Nadu was peaceful even after the demolition of Babri Masjid and that the RSS was trying to

He said that the RSS taking up a procession on Mahatma Gandhi birth anniversary was shocking as that organisation was involved in the murder of Gandhiji. He also said that the RSS was meticulously choosing such important dates to push forward the nefarious ideas of the organisation to the Tamil society, and added that the VCK and Left parties won’t allow Tamil Nadu to be turned into a ground of communal hatred through the RSS policies and programmes. Thirumavalavan in the statement said that his party welcomed the statement of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to reject harmful forces and promote social harmony. It may be noted that there are some major upheavals in Tamil Nadu after the early morning arrest of Islamist organisation, the Popular Front of India’s leaders on September 22 and the subsequent petrol bomb and kerosene bomb attacks on the residences, offices/shops of RSS and Hindu functionaries. The RSS has also joined issue with A. Raja, former Union minister on his terming Hinduism as anti-Shudra.

Xi’s Back, Claims Chinese Media. Here’s Why His Appearance Is Big News
President Xi Jinping reemerged after not being seen in public since his first foreign trip in more than two years earlier this month.
Xi, wearing a mask, visited an exhibition in Beijing on Tuesday about China’s achievements over the past decade, state-run news outlet Xinhua reported. The Chinese leader was accompanied by the other six members of the Politburo Standing Committee, a sign of unity after rumors circulated on Twitter about a challenge to his power.
Xi’s public appearance comes after he returned to Beijing from a summit in Uzbekistan at midnight on September 16. Prior to that trip, the Chinese leader last went abroad in January 2020, when he visited Myanmar days before locking down the central city of Wuhan and entering a long spell of Covid isolation.
His recent absence was consistent with China’s strict Covid protocols, which mandate all international arrivals undergo seven days of hotel quarantine, followed by three days of home isolation. It was the second time
Xi has at least given the impression of adhering to his nation’s Covid Zero rules.
In July, the Chinese leader wasn’t seen in public for almost two weeks after a two-day trip to Hong Kong to celebrate 25 years of Chinese rule in the city.
That marked his first time outside mainland China in more than two years, although he didn’t stay overnight in the finance hub.
As the rest of the world has shifted to living with the virus, China has stuck to a Covid Zero policy that aims to eliminate infections. That strategy has weighed on growth forecasts and sparked domestic criticism, most recently after a quarantine center transfer bus crashed killing some two dozen people.
“We will liberate ourselves from a colonial mindset,” India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said, proclaiming India’s new agenda and laying out its global implications.
New Noida - A new investment hub for UP
While Xi’s recent sweep through Central Asiamarked his return to the world stage, the Chinese leader displayed a more cautious approach to the virus than his peers.
Xi wore a face covering when meeting several counterparts and skipped a mask-free dinner at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan.
Xi’s has made tough Covid measures a cornerstone of his leadership, with state media citing the nation’s lower death count as evidence China has a superior governance model to the US and its Western allies.
Virus measures are set to tighten as Xi prepares for a twice-in-a-decade leadership summit next month, where he’s expected to secure a precedentbusting third term in office.
Lucknow, Sep 28 (IANS) With nearly 60 villages from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district and 20 from Gautam Buddha Nagar will soon get its new investment hub called ‘New Noida’.
This Delhi-Noida-Ghaziabad investment region will be developed across 20,000 hectares in four phases over the next 20 years.
In the first phase, infrastructure and early development in the extreme northern and southern parts of the planning area as well as the administrative hub will be done. This area is in close proximity to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and the Howrah-Delhi railway line.
It is well connected by rail, road and airport, officials said.
According to the government spokesman, the New Noida is being envisaged as an industrial and logistics hub and the state government has asked concerned officials to fast track the project.
“The masterplan has been discussed in detail. The board will now send it to the chief town and country planner in Lucknow and take feedback,” said a senior official involved in the project.
The Uttar Pradesh government had issued a notification for the ‘New Noida’ project and declared the area as a special economic zone in January last year.
It had assigned the Noida Authority the task of executing the project.
‘We will liberate ourselves from a colonial mindset’: Jaishankar declares
“We will liberate ourselves from a colonial mindset,” India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said, proclaiming India’s new agenda and laying out its global implications.
“Our rich civilisational heritage will be a source of pride and strength,” he added on Saturday at the UN General Assembly. As India celebrates the 75th anniversary of its Independence, he said the Indian people “are rejuvenating a society pillaged by centuries of foreign attacks and colonialism”. He attributed the “New India” that “is a confident and resurgent society” to “the visionary and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.
India’s “age-old outlook,” he added, “sees the world as one family. We believe that national good and global good can be entirely in harmony”. “Even as we meet our own development targets, India offers partnerships to our brothers and sisters in Asia, Africa and Latin America. And we do so based on their needs and priorities,” he said.
Externally, leaving the colonial mindset means “reformed multilateralism and more contemporary global governance,” Jaishankar added.“We believe that multipolarity, rebalancing, fair globalisation and reformed multilateralism cannot be
kept in abeyance,” the External Affairs Minister said.He added that a reformed multilateralism would have Security Council reforms at its core, pointing out that it has considerable support among UN members. To reform the Council, “our call is to allow serious negotiations on such a critical matter to proceed sincerely. They must not be blocked by procedural tactics. Naysayers cannot hold the IGN process hostage in perpetuity,” Jaishankar said.
The Intergovernmental Negotiations, or IGN as the reform process is known, has been blocked by a small group of countries led by Italy and includes Pakistan that has prevented the adoption of a negotiating text to allow the process move forward.
Pitching India’s case for a permanent seat, he added, “In these turbulent times, it is essential that the world listens to more voices of reason. And experiences more acts of goodwill. India is willing and able on both counts.”
He said, “The world, as we knew it, is poised for transformational changes” having been impacted by a “succession of shocks” -among them the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ukraine conflict and natural disasters.

The sources said that NRIs’ accounts were being used by the PFI members to send fund from Gulf countries. After receiving the fund, the member would transfer it to other account from where
they would withdraw it. Their supporters and members were working in UAE, Qatar, Turkey and in Oman from where they had been financially supporting the PFI, and this money was allegedly concealed by the PFI from the eyes of agencies.

AAP national joint general secretary Isudan Gadhvi attacked Paatil for showering praises on a person who wants to curb free will of people.

Setback to Congress in Himachal as Virbhadra loyalist Mahajan joins BJP
New Delhi, (IANS) In a major jolt to the Congress in Himachal Pradesh in the run up to the Assembly polls, party’s working president Harsh Mahajan on Wednesday joined the BJP in the national capital, amid an ongoing crisis in the party’s government in Rajasthan.
The three-time legislator Mahajan was once a close aide of Congress veteran and six-time Chief Minister late Virbhadra Singh.
He hails from Chamba and has a mass clout in the state and in the previous Virbhadra Singh-led Congress government in the state he was the Chairman of the Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Bank Ltd.
Mahajan’s family was dedicated to the Congress for the past 60 years. His father, Desh Raj Mahajan, was a four-time legislator, who served as a speaker and
minister in Himachal Pradesh. He joined BJP in Delhi in the presence of Union Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal and party President J.P. Nadda, among other leaders.
State BJP general secretary Suresh Kashyap said Mahajan, who belonged to Chamba district, has joined the party after getting inspired with the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and policies of the party.

The one minute and 35 seconds teaser starts with a glimpse of Babil singing and soon the focus shifts to actress Tripti Dimrii, who is playing a singer. Directed by Anvitaa Dutt and produced by Karnesh Ssharma, ‘Qala’ also stars Swastika Mukherjee and Amit Sial in key roles. Set in the 1930s and late 1940s, Qala is the story of the young, eponymous playback singer. It is about her tragic past and the ways in which it catches up with her, causing her to unravel at the peak of her hard-won success. But the beginning and end of her spiral is her relationship with her mother. The pathology of her upbringing and the neurosis it leads to.
Karan Johar will host Gauri Khan, Maheep Kapoor and Bhavana Pandey on the upcoming 12th episode of Koffee with Karan. The three were recently featured together on the second season of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.
On the episode, which is due out at midnight tonight, Gauri admitted that being Shah Rukh Khan’s wife often works against her, as opposed to benefitting her. Gauri is an interior designer who has designed the homes of several Bollywood personalities. She also recently debuted as a TV host with her own reality show, Dream Homes. She said, “When considering a new project, there are some people who consider me as a designer. But there are also times when it does not work out that way because at times, sometimes people do not want to get attached to the baggage of working with Shah Rukh Khan’s wife. It works against me 50% of the time,” she shared.
“There were times when Sanjay was sitting at home for years with no work. Money was tight. My kids have grown up seeing that along with the glamour and glitz,” she said.
She impressed you with her portrayal of a strong-headed politician Rani Bharti, but wait till you have seen the latest teaser of Huma Qureshi’s upcoming movie ‘Monica, O My Darling’ as she nails it once again. The teaser starts with Huma looking every inch gorgeous dressed in red as she dances to the tune of saxophones. She then slowly breaks into cabaret, reminding of the yesteryear’s actress Helen. The over-aminute of the film by Vasan Bala, only focuses on the retro dance number titled ‘Ek Zindagi’ with glimpses of Rajkummar Rao and Sikander Kher.

Bann Chakraborty: Juggling between love and laughter
With Plan A Plan B marking Riteish Deshmukh’s return to a genre he is most comfortable in, composer Bann Chakraborty knew he was hopping aboard a film that cinephiles are eager to watch. “But, I didn’t feel pressurised by it,” says the composer, adding that his working methods are rarely challenged by the appointed actor. “My job is to tell a story through music, and when I look at the screen, I look at the characters alone, which, in this case, happen to be Riteish and Tamannah [Bhatia]. My idea of scoring for this comedy stemmed from the story, and I catered to the genre. While I, of course, thought of how I can make the interactions between the characters fun, I retained a romantic vibe, while keeping it humorous. It wasn’t slapstick.” Apart from working as the background score composer, Chakraborty also composed two songs for the film — the first is an upbeat club song, and the other, a romantic offering.
I feel deprived, cheated as an actor Archana Puran Singh
aving started her career as a model, birthday girl Archana Puran Singh has featured in films like Jalwa, Raja Hindustani, Mohabbatein, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai among many others. She has also had a successful stint on television with shows like Shrimaan Shrimati, Jaane Bhi Do Paaro, Junoon and more. While she was known for her acting earlier, it was Comedy Circus that made Archana Puran Singh a household name. Having judged multiple seasons of the show, she took over the chair on The Kapil Sharma Show in 2019, and there has been no looking back for her. However, having been associated with comedy all these years, the actor feels that no one is now ready to offer her roles in other genres.
Archana sat down to chat with indianexpress.com, where she discussed the lack of roles. Sharing that with every passing year, the stereotype is only getting stronger, she said, “That chhaap (image) is so solid. Also, a lot of people feel that what should they offer me after Ms. Briganza. It’s been almost 25 years since Kuch Kuch Hota Hai released. And the character is still following me. People also feel that I am best suited only for comedy. As an actor, I feel deprived, cheated and I have been left yearning for good roles.”

Kashmir is back on the cinema map
This has been an eventful week. From the North of India to the South, news related to the film industries have dominated the discussions on television news channels as well as the social media. That is because there is some positive news and there is also news that fails to make sense.
The best news of the week is the return of cinema screens in Srinagar. The IMAX chain has revived the cinema business in Kashmir after a gap of 30 years following the start of militancy and terrorism in the late 1980s. The Kashmir valley had as many as nine cinema halls. That was the single-screen era.
Tiger Shroff addresses the failure of Heropanti 2: ‘Release hone se pehle bada mazaa aaya…’
During an AMA session on Saturday, Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff addressed the failure of Heropanti 2. When a fan asked him how he felt about the film, the actor had a rather honest and witty response to it. He shared that while he had a lot of fun before the release, things didn’t seem good after that.
Tiger Shroff shared an Instagram story where a fan asked him, “Heropanti 2 karke aapko kaisa laga (how did you feel about doing Heropanti 2).” The actor posted his response, which read, “Release hone se pehle bada mazaa aya… release k bad l lag gaye (it was a lot of fun before the film’s release, but not after that).”
Directed by Ahmed Khan, Heropanti 2 featured Tara Sutaria as the female lead while Nawazuddin Siddiqui played the antagonist. A sequel to the 2014 hit, the film could only mint Rs 24 crore at the box office.
Tiger Shroff next has Ganpath opposite Kriti Sanon. The film will hit cinemas in Christmas. He will also star with Akshay Kumar in the sequel of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. News of his film Screw Dheela getting shelved was recently making rounds. The Shashank Khaitan directorial was said to be affected because of Heropanti 2’s failure. However, a source close to Dharma Productions revealed that the film has been pushed owing to dates issues but ‘will happen next year for sure’.

BJP leaders on Monday seized upon the political crisis in Rajasthan to poke fun at the Congress.Union environment minister Bhupendra Yadav was among the first to tweet an old picture seeking to target the Bharat Jodo Yatra. The photograph tweeted by Yadav showed Rahul Gandhi posing happily, flanked by Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot.

Ashok Gehlot Ruled Out As Congress President After Revolt
The Congress has said Prime Minister Narendra Modi got a former ally arrested in Gujarat because he turned against the BJP and was threatening to inflict serious damage on the ruling party in the coming Assembly election. “Vipul Chaudhary, chairman of a large milk cooperative Dudhsagar Dairy, was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Gujarat police for a scam of Rs 800 crore. The FIR says that the scam took place between 2005 and 2016. Why has he been arrested in 2022?” Congress spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil asked.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued notices to the Centre and the states on a public interest plea that alleges blatant misuse of government advertisements by ruling parties, and refers to the use of the Prime Minister’s images on Covid vaccine certificates, ration cards and PDS grain sacks. The petition, moved by the NGO Common Cause, also complains that government advertorials are being passed off as news.

Congress and Akali Dal MLAs strongly opposed the tabling of a confidence motion by treasury benches. Taking a swipe at the ongoing crisis in Rajasthan Congress, Bhagwant Mann hit back at the grand old party, saying, “now they will teach us about house laws? First, ask them to set their house in order”. He also hit out at BJP over “Operation Lotus”, saying the party feels only they should be in power everywhere.
PM Modi’s Homage To Shinzo Abe, World Leaders At State Funeral
Shinzo Abe Funeral: PM Modi had on Tuesday met his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida and underlined the late Japanese leader’s contributions in strengthening the bilateral partnership

New Delhi: PM Modi today joined several global leaders to pay tributes to Japan’s former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at his state funeral in Tokyo. He paid floral tribute to the former leader. Japan began a controversial state funeral for the assassinated former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Tuesday, with his widow Akie carrying his ashes into a Tokyo hall where thousands of mourners gathered. The ceremony has seen public opposition over the huge costs incurred, and also because state funerals are reserved for the Imperial family. This is only the second time a politician is getting a state funeral, the last one was decades ago. Around 60
percent of Japanese are against the event, recent polls showed. Dressed in a black kimono, Akie carried the ashes in a box covered with a decorative fabric into the Budokan venue as a 19-gun salute sounded in honour of the ex-premier. The former Prime Minister reshaped Japan’s foreign policy, including setting out a bold vision for a quantum leap in ties with India. PM Modi had on Tuesday met his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida and underlined the late Japanese leader’s contributions in strengthening the bilateral partnership as well as his vision of a free, open and inclusive IndoPacific region.
Sources said the Congress leadership is furious with Ashok Gehlot for plotting a rebellion that has embarrassed the party in the middle of Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra”. The 71-year-old Gandhi favourite’s refusal to give up the post of Rajasthan Chief Minister has annoyed the leadership, the sources say. Mr Gehlot, 71, had agreed to resign as Chief Minister before his elevation as Congress president after Rahul Gandhi made it clear that he would not be allowed a double role, given the Congress’s “one person, one post” policy. The transition in Rajasthan was to be formally announced at a meeting of MLAs at Mr Gehlot’s home on Sunday. The time and place was decided by the Chief Minister, according to Ajay Maken and Mallikarjun Kharge, who were part of the meeting as central observers.

Asylum Seekers Based In NYC To Be Housed In Massive Tents
NEW YORK, ,NY— Asylum seekers bused to New York City by Republican lawmakers amid a red state-blue state political spat will end their journey on rows of cots inside massive tents, City Hall announced Thursday.
The city plans to develop two “Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief” centers to provide temporary housing for hundreds of migrants who enter the city from Texas, and in some cases Florida, on a daily basis, the Mayor’s office said.
“While other leaders have abdicated their moral duty to support arriving asylum seekers, New York City refuses to do so,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “This is not an everyday homelessness crisis, but a humanitarian crisis that requires a different approach.”
Cook County Board Approves Funding
The two centers, run by the city’s Emergency Management department and New York City Health and Hospitals, will open in The Bronx’s Orchard Beach and a second location yet to be chosen.
Asylum seekers will spend about one to three days in the centers, but the Mayor’s office noted this time span could change.
The Mayor’s office did not provide information about the number of cots, tents or the cost of the centers and held
no open-press events Thursday, the day the news was released.
The press release includes two photos of large cot-filled tents officials said serve as examples of what the centers will look like, but officials noted some unspecified differences are to be expected. The Legal Aid Society and the Coalition for the Homeless raised concerns about housing children and families in a congregate setting.
“This practice, which has been widely condemned for its adverse and dangerous impact on this uniquely vulnerable population, is already subject to legal prohibitions,” the groups said in a joint statement. “That said, we remain willing to work with the City on a viable solution that satisfies New York’s legal and moral obligation to provide safe and adequate shelter to all who seek it, including asylum seekers.”

California Civil Rights Department Sued by HAF
Last month, in Plano, Texas when a video emerged of a woman hurling racist rants towards a group of four Indian American women, the incident gathered a lot of attention.

Bidisha Rudra an Indian American who has lived for 20-years in the US has now approached the Collin County civil court. Rudra has sued her attacker for compensatory and punitive damages.
While talking to Dallas Observer, Rudra said, “Life has not been the same since the incident, to put it lightly.” She added, “There’s a lot of trauma, emotional distress and a feeling of insecurity that keeps haunting me all the time. The assailant’s words keep ringing in my ears when I go to sleep.” She also said, “Any minority is under some sort of threat in today’s world,”

WASHINGTON, DC- The Hindu American Foundation (HAF) sued the California Department of Civil Rights in US for alleged misrepresentation of Hindu beliefs and practices by saying that the caste system and caste-based discrimination are integral parts of Hindu teachings.
The advocacy group says by doing so, the California Department of Civil Rights violated the First Amendment rights of Hindus living in CA.
The Foundation said the department had acted “unconstitutionally” alleging caste discrimination occurring at Cisco Systems by “seeking to define what Hindus believe and decide how they practice their religion.”
“HAF’s lawsuit states that the Department of Civil Rights (formerly known as Department of Fair Employment and Housing) wrongly asserts ‘that a caste system nd caste-based discrimination are integral parts of Hindu teaching and practices by declaring the caste system to be a ‘strict Hindu social and religious hierarchy, which requires discrimination by ‘social custom and legal mandate.”

‘Bhagwat toed Sangh line’
India Warns Of “Sharp Increase” In Hate Crimes In Canada
The government said the Foreign Ministry has taken up incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities with Canada
Indresh Kumar’s remarks come a day after the outfit chief, taking forward his outreach to the Muslim community, visited mosque and madrassa
RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s visit to a mosque and his meeting with the head of an organisation of imams were not a deviation from the outfit’s line, its senior leader Indresh Kumar said on Friday.
He slammed the Congress for saying Bhagwat’s meeting with All India Imam Organisation chief Umer Ahmed Ilyasi was due to the “impact” of the party’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra”. The Congress has misunderstood the Sangh’s line and it should “repent” for it, Kumar, a national executive member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), told reporters on the sidelines of an event organised to mark the 104th Haifa Victory Day at the Teen Murti Chowk here.
His remarks came a day after Bhagwat, taking forward his outreach to the Muslim community, visited a mosque and a madrassa here and held discussions with Ilyasi, who termed him “rashtra pita”.
Indian American Neha Narkhede on the Hurun Rich List 2022
India today warned its citizens in Canada and students flying to the country about a “sharp increase in hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities”, and urged them to “remain vigilant”.
The Foreign Ministry said it has taken up incidents of hate
crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities with Canada and has asked for investigation and action. “The perpetrators of these crimes have not been brought to justice so far in Canada,” said a ministry statement. “In view of the increasing incidences of crimes as described above, Indian nationals and students from India in Canada and those proceeding to Canada for travel/ education are advised to exercise due caution and remain vigilant,” the statement said. The advisory was put out in the middle of a huge diplomatic row over a so-called referendum by “proKhalistan” elements on a separate homeland for Sikhs. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi had yesterday described the referendum as a “farcical exercise held by extremist and radical elements”. He also said it was “deeply objectionable” that this was allowed in a friendly country.

At the Indian Independence Day celebrations event at the US Capitol organized by the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) many US lawmakers talked about USIndia ties and the immense contribution of physicians of Indian-origin in America.
Senator Joe Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, said, “Had it not been for the Indian community that came to West Virginia to provide their services, most of rural West Virginia would not have health care today.”
Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, a Republican Senator from Mississippi said, “The relationship is mutually
beneficial for both of the countries and not just in the field of medicine and technology.”
Senator Shelley Capito from West Virginia, said, “I live in Charleston, West Virginia, a small rural state. If we did not have any Indian-American doctors, we would not have any kind of quality healthcare, we would not have the breadth and the depth and the richness of our communities that we have.”
India’s Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu said that there is a close connection between the two countries and today it is driven by the leadership of the two largest democracies of the world.
Corporation had earlier denied permission to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena as well as Eknath Shinde’s faction for holding Dussehra rally at the iconic Shivaji Park on the basis of law and order concerns raised by Mumbai Police. The Thackeray faction challenged the BMC decision, to which the Shinde faction made an intervention plea.

‘I believe Niemann has cheated more’: World Champion Magnus Carlsen says in a statement
“His over the board progress has been unusual, and throughout our game in the Sinquefield Cup I had the impression that he wasn’t tense or even fully concentrating on the game in critical positions, while outplaying me as black in a way I think only a handful of players can do.”
Melbourne: (IANS) Australia wicketkeeper and middle-order batter Matthew Wade could be their choice for skipper for the ICC T20 World Cup at home next month, should regular skipper Aaron Finch suffer an injury or his string of poor scores continues, said a report in Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday. Wade, who is currently not in Cricket Australia’s contracted list, was first tipped to lead the Kangaroos when Finch missed a T20 game against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground in 2020, but his reported disciplinary record went against him at that time, despite him being a “seasoned state captain” and “one of the most critical members of the side”.

10-0-63-8. For a spinner to finish with such overall figures in a three-match T20I series, that too in conditions offering little assistance to bowlers, is certainly no mean feat. That’s exactly where Axar Patel needs to be lauded. Obviously, captain Rohit Sharma’s swashbuckling knock in Nagpur, Suryakumar Yadav’s pyrotechnics, and Virat Kohli’s determined effort with the bat in the decider in Hyderabad had big roles to play in India’s comefrom-behind series win against Australia. A fair analysis, though, would only underpin the importance of Axar’s efforts with the ball which turned out to be game-changing in all three matches.
Norwegian world chess champion Magnus Carlsen has released a statement regarding the Hans Niemann affair claiming that the American has cheated more than he has publicly admitted and he will not play chess with him in the future.
Last week in the ‘Julius Baer Generation Cup’ online tournament, Carlsen resigned after one move against Niemann, who lags him by almost 200 Elo points – the rating system used to calculate the relative skill levels of players. “I believe that Niemann has cheated more – and more recently –than he has publicly admitted,” Carlsen said in a statement on Twitter.
“So far I have only been able to speak with my actions, and those actions have stated clearly that I am not willing to play chess with Niemann,” Carlsen said. The 19-year-old Niemann stunned Carlsen by beating him at the $500,000 event in St Louis, but Carlsen then dramatically withdrew from the tournament. He announced his decision in a tweet, alongside a video of the football manager José Mourinho saying: “If I speak, I am in big trouble.” Niemann has denied any wrongdoing in over-the-board games.
“When Niemann was invited last minute to the 2022 Sinquefield Cup, I strongly considered withdrawing prior to the event. I ultimately chose to play,” Carlsen said.
Deepti Sharma has said that the Indian team had warned England batter Charlie Dean before running her out at the non-striker’s end at Lord’s during the final ODI on Saturday. T he of f-spinner had stopped in her bowling stride and whipped off the bails at the nonstriker’s end to complete India’s 3-0 sweep.
Virat Kohli one of the best chase masters in the world; his consistency is amazing: Ajay Jadeja
Mumbai: (IANS) Former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has called Virat Kohli as one of the best chase masters in the world of cricket, adding that the solidity the former skipper provides to the team is just unrivalled.
Virat played a pivotal role in helping India win the three-match T20I series against Australia in the last game at Hyderabad, scoring a 48-ball 63 that helped the hosts chase down the Kangaroos’ competitive target of 187 to seal the series 2-1.
With his 104-run stand with charismatic batter Suryakumar Yadav (69), it was a treat to watch the two batters go about their task of punishing the

visitors’ bowling that had the likes of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Cameron Green among others.
Ever during the Asia Cup in the UAE recently, Kohli, returning to the side after taking a month-long break from the game to recharge his batteries, was in peak batting form.
“I mean that’s the key to Indian cricket. I mean it’s been that for a while, for a long time. I mean there was a period where Virat Kohli would score runs and if there was anything, MS Dhoni would finish it off at the end,” said Jadeja on Cricbuzz.
“But now with the personnel changing around Virat Kohli, it’s made it easier for him and it’s made it easier for everyone
else around him to play at a whole different ball game and the solidity that Virat Kohli provides and for me it’s always been the solidity of Virat Kohli, not the striking ability. That’s why he was a chase master. He is a chase master. He understands the pace of the game.”
Jadeja conceded Kohli might not be the best in terms of striking ability and hitting massive sixes, but his consistency is priceless.
“He may not have the striking ability that a lot of players have around the world and in that Indian team but there is no one else that I know who has the consistency of Virat Kohli,” added Jadeja.

Matthew Wade could be looked at as new T20 captain by Cricket Australia: Report
25/hiindialive @hiindia /hiindiaNews 773.526.8353FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 2022 SPORTS
How much Vitamin D do we need and how much is too much? Do we really need supplements?
Vitamin D is both a nutrient that we consume and a fatsoluble hormone that our bodies produce. It is required for the body’s calcium and phosphate levels to be maintained and regulated. To maintain strong bones, teeth and muscles, these nutrients are necessary. Thus, a deficiency of vitamin D raises the chance of developing several chronic diseases. It can result in bone discomfort brought on by osteomalacia in adults and bone deformities such as rickets in children. However, vitamin D receptors are found in a large number of human organs and tissues, which suggest significant implications beyond just bone health.
Types and Sources of Vitamin D: Which one do you need?
Though certain foods have been fortified with vitamin D, very few of them actually contain vitamin D naturally. It is challenging to consume enough vitamin D through your diet. Therefore, some people need supplements. But which ones do you need? There are two types of vitamin D supplements: vitamin D2 or “pre-vitamin D” and vitamin D3. The term, “the sunshine vitamin,” refers to both of these naturally occurring forms, which are created in the presence of ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation from the sun. However, D3 is produced by animals, including humans, and D2 by plants and fungus.
How much Vitamin D do you actually need?
Most people can produce all the vitamin D they require from late March or early April to the end of September by getting enough sunlight on their skin and by eating a balanced diet. However, as the sun is not powerful enough to produce enough vitamin D during the rainy and winter seasons, one must obtain it from their food or by taking supplements. Everyone (including expectant and nursing mothers) should think about taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during
Comedian Raju Srivastava’s death, after suffering a cardiac arrest and collapsing on a treadmill last month, raises a key question: Should we have a limit on our exercise regimen, and are we taking out fitness mantra to extremes and over-exerting ourselves?
Is our obsession with getting lean stressing the heart out? Cardiologists say that 150 minutes of any exercise regime every week are good enough and a longer routine than that does not guarantee extra benefits. In fact, it may do harm than good if the person is already prone to heart disease and suffers from markers like hypertension, anxiety or even a silent blockage that has not harmed him thus far.
“All you need are 150 minutes for five days a week, or 30 minutes of exercise each day. It should be a healthy mix of aerobics, weight training (this strengthens muscles, including the heart) and stretching (yoga and breathing exercises). This rotational regime is good for both physical and mental health. Stop during exercise
A daily vitamin D intake of more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) is dangerous for all individuals, including those who are pregnant, nursing, elderly and kids between 11 and 17. Children between the ages of 1 and 10 should consume no more than 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) per day. Under-12-month infants shouldn’t consume more than 25 micrograms (1,000 IU) each day, says Dr Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, New Delhi
this time.
However, if one takes too many vitamin D supplements over time, there can be an accumulation of calcium in the body (hypercalcemia). The heart, kidneys, and bones may also be harmed by this. The majority of people only need 10 micrograms of vitamin D each day if they decide to take supplements.
A daily vitamin D intake of more than 100 micrograms (4,000 IU) may, however, be dangerous. This applies to all individuals, including those who are pregnant, nursing, elderly, and kids who are 11 to 17 years old. Children between the ages of 1-10 should consume no more than 50 micrograms (2,000 IU) per day. Under-12-month infants shouldn’t consume more than 25 micrograms (1,000 IU) each day. You can buy vitamin D supplements or drops
at most pharmacies and supermarkets. However, it is advisable that one must speak with their doctor before taking any supplements.
Do South Asians really need Vitamin D supplements?
If you have a dark complexion, such as if you are of South-Asian, African, or African-Caribbean descent, you may have trouble consuming enough vitamin D solely from sunshine. India enjoys plenty of sunshine as it is a tropical country. The majority of Indians are presumed to have sufficient vitamin D levels because they reside in regions with year-round access to ample sunlight. However, contrary to all beliefs, vitamin D deficiency is a common problem in the country.
This is brought on by the dark skin
Is over-exertion at the gym damaging your heart?
All you need are 150 minutes for five days a week, or 30 minutes of exercise each day. It should be a healthy mix of aerobics, weight training (this strengthens muscles, including the heart) and stretching (yoga and breathing exercises).
complexion (increase in skin pigmentation which acts as a type of natural sunscreen), increased reliance on indoor activities, which limits exposure to sunshine, urbanisation, application of sunscreen products, and cultural customs, Indian dietary practices and reduced use of foods fortified with vitamin D. Majority of foods high in vitamin D come from animals and a majority of Indians are vegetarians. However, rural residents, who by virtue of their line of work receive adequate sun exposure, may also have low levels of vitamin D. This might be a result of their diet, which is heavy in phytate and low in calcium.
Unfortunately, diet alone cannot provide enough vitamin D to meet the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for Indians as about 90 per cent of people today spend the majority of their time indoors. A comprehensive plan to fight vitamin D insufficiency would hence involve sufficient sun exposure, food changes, supplementation as needed, managing obesity and paying particular attention to people with darker skin tones.
Is Vitamin D toxicity real?
Vitamin D toxicity or Hypervitaminosis D is a rare but potentially dangerous illness that develops when your body is exposed to too much vitamin D. It occurs not by diet or sun exposure but typically through high doses of vitamin D supplements. A build-up of calcium in your blood (hypercalcemia), which can result in nausea and frequent vomitting, weakness and frequent urination, is the main side effect of vitamin D toxicity. The most frequently observed clinical symptoms of Vitamin D toxicity also include confusion, apathy, stomach pain, polyuria, polydipsia and dehydration. In addition to this, calcium stones may form in the kidneys and bone discomfort may result from vitamin D toxicity. Although vitamin D toxicity is not reported from spending too much time in the sun, always remember to cover up or protect your skin if you’re out for long to reduce the risk of skin cancer and skin damage.

if you have discomfort and get yourself tested before you adopt any highintensity regime,” advises Dr Ruchit Shah, Interventional Cardiologist, Masina Hospital, Mumbai.
“Regular exercise increases your heart rate, improves your cardiac muscles and aids in enhancing your lung capacity. On the other hand, there is a phenomenon
known as over-exercising. Continual over-exertion has been linked to an increased risk of ‘atrial fibrillation’, a form of irregular heart rhythm that can be fatal if left untreated. Besides, it can potentially raise the risk of cardiac abnormalities, particularly for those with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or coronary heart disease,” says Dr Shalin Thakore, Senior
Indians are genetically prone to developing heart disease 15 or 20 years earlier than their Western and Japanese counterparts. And since our genes are not modifiable, we have to look at modifiable factors like lifestyle, sleep cycles and stress. “Now stress is compounded by tobacco, tobaccoderived products and alcohol. Did you know that the effect of even a single tobacco use lasts for three to six months? By rough estimates, a cigarette shortens your life by five to seven minutes. Which means a moderate smoker can easily reduce his/her life by three to five years. Instead of ‘no smoking’ banners, we should start a ‘why you should not start smoking’ campaign,” says Dr Shah.
Dr Shah advocates the “Ek chamach kam (One teaspoon less)” campaign, which entails cutting down on our use of the three whites in our food — salt and sugar and oil. More fruits and vegetables. Minimise cakes and junk foods.”

safest countries for solo women travellers Shenaz Treasury
“Of course, there is no 100 per cent guarantee anywhere...” Treasury, an actor and blogger adds
Solo travelling is fast catching up across the globe, with men and women opting to explore a destination in their own company. However, not all countries are considered safe for travellers, especially women. As such, travel blogger Shenaz Treasury took to Instagram to share her personal experience and also list some places solo women travellers can go to without feeling threatened.
Canada:
As per a study by Bounce, a travel company, Canada is the eighth safest country for female travellers.
Thailand:
The blogger shared that one can “wear what you want, nobody cares,” adding, “I have even gone clubbing alone.”
Sweden:
Recalling her personal experience she mentioned, “ I felt very safe here even though the streets were empty.”
Austria:
With a score of 7.70 out of 10, Austria is the second safest country for female travellers, according to the same study. With an “extremely low crime rate against women,” Shenaz suggested it to be a good choice for solo female travellers.
Ireland:
Ranked number one for female travelers—”all fear here is the rain,” Shenaz said. The country is called the safest—”particularly for the laws it has in place to protect women from violence, as well as when it comes to local attitudes toward violence against women.”
Singapore:
Calling it the “safest Asian country” she added, “Walk alone in whatever you like without any fear.” Recalling her experience she added, “Although I have left my door unlocked in Singapore when I lived there (by mistake) and left my wallet with cash in a theatre and both times I was completely astonished that I was fine!!”
