shooting in US history never happened, and that the grieving families seen in news coverage were actors hired as part of a plot to take away people’s guns.
The verdict came in a defamation lawsuit filed by some of the families of 26 people who were killed in the 2012 shooting, plus an FBI agent who was among the first responders. A Texas jury in August awarded nearly $50 million to the parents of another slain child.
Robbie Parker, who lost his 6-year-old daughter, Emilie, said outside the Connecticut court that he was proud that “what we were able to accomplish was just to simply tell the truth.”
Jurors ordered conspiracy theorist Alex Jones on Wednesday to pay nearly $1 billion to Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims’ relatives and an FBI agent, who said he turned their loss and trauma into years of torment by promoting the lie that the rampage was a hoax.

“And it shouldn’t be this hard, and it shouldn’t be this scary,” said Parker, who became an early target of conspiracy theorists after he spoke at a news conference the day after the shooting.
The jury awarded him the most of any plaintiff: $120 million.
Jones wasn’t at court but reacted on his Infowars show. As courtroom video showed the jury awards being read out, Jones said that he himself had never mentioned the plaintiffs’ names.

President Biden on Tuesday called President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia a “rational actor” but said he had miscalculated badly about the reaction to his invasion of Ukraine, in an interview that was broadcast on CNN Tuesday night. Putin “thought he was going to be welcomed with open arms, that this was the home of Mother Russia in Kyiv, and that where he was going to be welcomed, and I think he just totally miscalculated”, Biden said in the interview with the host Jake Tapper. But Biden also said that Putin’s goals in sending troops into Ukraine were not rational, even if he is a rational person overall. “If you listen to the speech he made after when that decision was being made, he talked about the whole idea of — he was needed to be the leader of Russia that united all of the Russian speakers,” Biden said.

“It is very clear and the Iranians have made very clear that this is not a deal that they have been prepared to make. The deal certainly does not appear imminent,” Price told a briefing.
Stubbornly-high inflation is draining Americans’ bank accounts, frustrating small businesses and raising alarm bells at the Federal Reserve.
Inflation at the wholesale level rose 8.5 per cent in September from a year earlier, the third straight decline though costs remain at painfully high levels.
Wednesday’s report from the Labour Department also showed that the producer price index — which measures price changes before they reach the consumer — rose 0.4 per cent in September from August, after two months of decline.
The September monthly increase was larger than expected and was pushed higher by a big increase in hotel room costs. Food costs also rose in September from August, after a slight drop the previous month.

A top Los Angeles city councilwoman has resigned after she was secretly recorded making racist remarks in a meeting with two other city lawmakers.
Nury Martinez stepped aside as city council president on Monday, but had still clung on to her council seat. President Joe Biden has led calls for her and two other Democrats to go. The audio obtained by the Los Angeles Times and posted online is from an October 2021 meeting to discuss redrawing of voting maps. It is unclear who recorded the discussion.
In a statement to voters from her Council District 6 on Wednesday, Mrs Martinez announced she was quitting after nine years.
US said that Iran had showed little interest in reviving the nuclear pact.
US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that the “Iranians have made very clear that this is not a deal” that they have been prepared to make.
Washington: The United States on Wednesday said that reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal is “not our focus right now,” saying Tehran had showed little interest in reviving the pact and that Washington was concentrating on how to support Iranian protesters.
Asked if the United States was interested in pursuing talks to revive the pact under which Iran curbed its nuclear program in return for economic sanctions relief, U.S .State Department spokesman Ned
“Nothing we’ve heard in recent weeks suggests they have changed their position. And so right now our focus ... is on the remarkable bravery and courage that the Iranian people are exhibiting through their peaceful demonstrations,” he said.
“Our focus right now is on shining a spotlight on what they’re doing and supporting them in the ways we can,” he said, referring to anti-government protests ignited by the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in the custody of Iran’s morality police. Then-U.S. President Donald Trump abandoned the nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers in 2018 and unilaterally reimposed economic sanctions that have hobbled Iran’s economy by curbing its oil exports.
A year later, Tehran reacted by gradually violating the deal’s nuclear limits, reviving U.S., Israeli and Gulf Arab fears that Iran may be seeking to obtain an atomic weapon, an ambition Iran denies.
The US and Mexico have agreed to a plan that allows some Venezuelan migrants to enter the US - but those who arrive illegally will be sent back to Mexico. It is hoped the deal will ease pressure at the US-Mexico border, where a steady flow of Venezuelans continue to arrive as they flee the crisis-hit nation. Starting immediately, flights will be arranged for 24,000 migrants to arrive in the United States. Some six million people have left Venezuela in the past five years. The exodus is one of the largest migrations in the world, fuelled by violence, food, fuel and medicine shortages, and repression by the government of President Nicolás Maduro. It has seen people desperate to improve their lives walking thousands of miles along dangerous routes to try to reach the US-Mexico border, where they then try to enter illegally or claim asylum.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s deadly missile attacks against “targets with no military purpose” across Ukraine.
Ukraine’s allies announced the delivery of new air defences and recommitted to providing it robust, enduring military assistance at a meeting at Nato headquarters on Wednesday, saying Russian missile strikes two days ago only further united them. US defence secretary Lloyd Austin, sitting next to his Ukrainian counterpart, opened the gathering of more than 50 countries by condemning
“The whole world has just seen yet again the malice and cruelty of Putin’s war of choice, rooted in aggression and waged with deep contempt for the rules of war,” Austin told the gathering, sitting next to Ukrainian defence minister Oleksii Reznikov. “But Russia’s latest assaults have only deepened the determination of the Ukrainian people and further united countries of goodwill from every region on Earth.”
The Russian air attacks killed 19 people in Ukraine, wounded more than 100 and knocked out power supplies across the country, adding new urgency to Kyiv’s longstanding calls for air defences to protect its cities. Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg called Russia’s missile attacks a sign of weakness.

Maintaining its record of neutrality, India has abstained on a UN General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories, declaring that it is consistent with New Delhi’s “well thought out national position”, and has called for a diplomatic solution.
The resolution, which received 143 votes, with only five countries voting against it, and 35 abstaining on Wednesday at the Assembly’s emergency session, passed with the required two-thirds majority showing Russia’s isolation.
The Assembly action followed Moscow’s
veto of a similar resolution on October 1 in the Security Council.
Explaining India’s decision, Permanent Representative Ruchira Kamboj said that with its “firm resolve to strive for a peaceful solution through dialogue and diplomacy, India has decided to abstain”.
At the same time, she directed criticism
at Russia without naming it: “We have consistently advocated that no solution can ever be arrived at the cost of human lives. Escalation of hostilities and violence is in no one’s interest.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi “has said unequivocally that this cannot be an era of war”, she said citing his remark in the presence of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
She also quoted from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s speech at the Assembly in September in which he implied support for Ukraine in the conflict, saying, “We are on the side that respects the UN Charter and its founding principles”.

The Karnataka High Court had refused to lift the ban on hijab - headscarves worn by some Muslim women - in schools and colleges. Today, a Karnataka minister said the hijab ban stays valid despite the split verdict.

From being an actor, director to producer, Ajay Devgn is known for donning multiple hats. In 2008, he directed and produced ‘U Me Aur Hum’, he also produced and acted in ‘Raju Chacha’ and in 2022 he directed ‘Runway 34’ which is inspired from an incident of a flight from Doha to Kochi in 2015.
Ajay shared that having grown up on film sets (his father Veeru is a renowned action director) has armed him up with various skills of
filmmaking.
The actor said: “I have grown up on film sets, from assisting to handling the camera, from editing to taking up small tasks on the sets.
These experiences have contributed to the kind of artiste I have transformed into today. As an actor, I’ve always liked the challenges.” ‘Runway 34’ is a riveting story of aviation clubbed with courtroom drama. Along with Ajay, it features Rakul Preet Singh and Amitabh Bachchan.
Ajay further shared what he liked about the film: “Exploring something new interests me a lot. This genre, aviation drama, is fairly new in the country and it’s a genre that I really enjoy. The script has a lot of drama, thrill, emotion and suspense. In order for audiences to experience the situations with us, everything had to feel real, the aircraft, the cast, the environment.”
“I think reality will grip the audience the minute they set eyes on their screens”, he added.
It’s not uncommon to see actors play similar characters across projects, but only a few manage to steer clear of getting stereotyped. Amit Sial, who plays a politician in Maharani and Jamtara — the second edition of which aired recently — says that both characters were starkly different from each other. “I am not playing two separate politicians who behave like one. I am playing two separate people who happen to be politicians.”
“They do slot me. I have had hundreds of offers to play a politician or an antagonist similar to what I have played before,” he says, adding that it is the “actor’s responsibility to rightly turn them down and explore diverse roles.” Following a successful season, with another is often stressful, but Sial believes that he is “never one to take the pressure”. “I believe the pressure is more on the writers and Netflix. As an actor, I don’t get stressed about anything.”

The growth was slowing across many parts of the world even as inflation is rising: IMF Director of Asia and Pacific Department
When everyone is slowing down in terms of economic growth, India has not remained unimpacted, but is doing better and is in a relatively bright spot compared to other countries, a top International Monetary Fund (IMF) official said on Tuesday.
Just look at the global conjuncture right now, which is the overarching problem, IMF Director of Asia and Pacific Department, Krishna Srinivasan, said, adding that the growth was “slowing across many
parts of the world even as inflation is rising”.
“We expect countries accounting for 1/3 of the global economy to go into a recession this year or the next. And inflation is rampant. So that is the overarching story, Srinivasan told PTI in an interview.
“Almost every country is slowing. In that context, India is doing better and is in a relative bright spot compared
to the other countries in the region,” Srinivasan said.
The IMF on Tuesday in its World Economic Outlook projected a growth rate of 6.8 per cent in 2022 as compared to 8.7 per cent in 2021 for India.
The projection for 2023 slides down further to 6.1 per cent. More than a third of the global economy will contract in 2023, while the three largest economies -- the United States, the European Union, and China -- will continue to stall, it said.
“In short, the worst is yet to come, and for many people, 2023 will feel like a recession, said Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, the Economic Counsellor and the Director of Research of the IMF, in his forward to the WEO released during the annual meeting of the IMF and the World Bank.

Ji Min “Jimmy” Sha, a junior cybersecurity major and international student from Korea was arrested in connection with the murder.
Sha, 22, made his first court appearance on Friday before Tippecanoe County
“I was blackmailed,” the suspect said when asked about a motive for the crime. He did not elaborate, WLFI, a television station in Indiana, reported. When asked if he had anything to say to the victim’s family, Sha replied: “I am very sorry.” Last week, Sha appeared to mutter “I love my family” as he was hauled to jail for allegedly killing Chheda, a senior data science major who the Tippecanoe County coroner said died of “multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries.” Sha called the police about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday to say he had fatally stabbed his roommate in their room at McCutcheon Hall. Police found Chheda in a chair and Sha covered in what appeared to be blood, according to the outlet. Similarly, while India was capable of producing fertilisers and it was doing so, as well as meeting requirements with the government footing the bill, the demand was rising, she said. “More than 72 hours have passed after elected representatives of the BJP called for complete social and economic boycott of Muslims, threatened to kill them one by one, but no action has been initiated by Delhi police,” she said.
Shrinate added: “When will the Prime Minister wake up? We saw how India was defamed and had to apologise to several countries for the conduct of one person (BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma). But BJP leaders continue to spew venom. Why do they speak like this? Because they know this is the surest way to rise in the BJP.
Addressing a gathering here, Sitharaman said India’s foundation for the ongoing successful recovery from the pandemic was laid when Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office in 2014.

The minister, however, observed that the Indian economy is not exempt from the impact of swirling global currents. “No economy is,” she said. “After the unprecedented shock of the pandemic, came the conflict

CHICAGO, IL– A study led by Indianorigin doctor Nilay Shah says that the standard approach and definitions of obesity, based on specific body mass index thresholds, may not be appropriate for the Asian American population.
The Asian Americans are a fastestgrowing ethnic group in the United States with their population expected to number more than 46 million by 2060. “Clinicians must be aware that the cardiovascular and metabolic risks related to obesity may be different among individuals who belong to different Asian subgroups,” says lead author Dr Nilay Shah, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Illinois.
The standard threshold for obesity is a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or above, but the study finds that the number should be a BMI of 27.5 or above for Asian American people, based on their health risks.
Health risks in this population also may start at a lower BMI than the standard BMI definitions of obesity, the study says. It further finds that the prevalence of obesity ranged from 13 per cent in Chinese American adults to 29 per cent in Filipino American adults. So, applying standard definitions to Asian Americans may miss a large portion of adults from these groups who have higher risks for disease because of their body composition, Shah says.
The study, published in Annals of Internal Medicine, identifies the prevalence of obesity in the six largest Asian American subgroups – Asian Indian, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese, which better represents the variability in obesity in Asian subgroups in the US.
NEW YORK, NY- A Yorkville shop selling cannabis products was robbed at gunpoint late Sunday, according to police.
Two suspects walked into World of Cannabis on Second Avenue near East 90th Street around 9 p.m. Sunday and approached an 18-yearold employee, police said.
One man brandished a firearm, while the other went behind the counter to grab merchandise and cash from the register, police said.
The two men then fled the shop, walking southbound along Second Avenue, police said.
They made off with about $400 in cash, plus $800 worth of CBD merchandise and other products, police said. The teenage worker was not injured, police said.
Police described the suspects as two men in their twenties wearing black clothing. No arrests have been made.
As smoke shops proliferate across the city ahead of New York’s widespread legalization of marijuana, some have worried that the stores could become robbery targets for their valuable products and use of cash transactions

The move is necessary because the city’s shelter system is nearing 100 percent capacity and on track to have 100,000 people within it in the year to come. He said the city is on track to spend $1 billion this fiscal year on the crisis.
“This is unsustainable,” he said. “The city is going to run out of funding for other priorities.”
“New York City is doing all we can, but we are reaching the outer limit of our ability to help.”
New York City is bearing more than its fair share of a “national crisis” caused by political motivations, Adams said.
Adams outlined the crisis in stark terms.
He said more than 17,000 migrants have arrived in the city so far, largely by Republicans politicians such as Texas Gov. Greg Abbott who have been dealing with a surge in asylum seekers from South America.

NEW YORK, NY — A massive influx of asylum seekers is an “unsustainable” crisis that threatens to stretch New York City’s shelters and budget to the breaking point, Mayor Eric Adams said in an address to the city Friday. Adams declared a state of emergency over the migrant crisis that suspends local laws to make it easier to build temporary humanitarian shelters to house migrants such as one planned on Randall’s Island.
Hundreds of migrant buses have arrived since April, and nine arrived on Thursday alone, he said.
One in five people in city shelters are migrants, out of 61,000, he said. “Every day, from this point forward, we’re setting a new record,” he said.“We have not asked for this. There was never any agreement to take on the job of supporting thousands of asylum seekers. This responsibility was simply handed to us without warning as buses began showing up.”

This case follows a similar smuggling attempt of 33 migrants along the same stretch of Route 82 on September 25. U.S. Border Patrol agents and their law enforcement partners are dedicated to the safety and security of all whom they encounter. They regularly rescue migrants from extremely dangerous transportation situations, such as being hauled insecurely in trunks and trailers, and callous smugglers who show no regard for their wellbeing.
HENRICO, Va. On the 27th anniversary of the opening of the India K’ Raja restaurant in Henrico County, the building was vandalized with vulgar and racist graffiti.
The side and back of the building at 9051 W. Broad St. were spray-painted with derogatory words and phrases targeting Asian Americans last weekend.
“For 27 years, this has been home. Nobody has ever displayed that kind of anger or hate to us,” said restaurant owner Tony Sappal. “I’ve spent more of my life here than anywhere else. I’ve raised my family here.”.
Authorities are investigating the incident as vandalism at this point and have documented the matter as a “biased-based incident,” said Henrico police Lt. Matt Pecka.
Depending on the overall cost of the damage, the vandalism charge could be a misdemeanor or felony.
“Acts of intimidation or hatred will not be tolerated in our community. Anyone committing criminal acts will be charged accordingly,” Police Chief Eric English said in a statement. Sappal said he and his family take pride in their longstanding small business and have felt loved by the community. The restaurant is involved in several community organizations. Henrico police urge anyone with information about the vandalism to contact Detective Stone at (804) 501-7176, or contact Crime Stoppers at (804) 7801000 or online at P3Tips.com.

CHICAGO, IL- After two years of hosting annual organizational meets virtually, “Ekal Vidyalaya Foundation (EVF)”, last week hosted an in-person ‘International Conference’ in Chicago for its USA, Canada and India components to review and recalibrate the roadmap for the future.
The main agenda of the conference was to put ‘Ekal’ (as it is popularly known) on the FastTrack after some setbacks in 2020-21 due to Covid pandemic. Thus, Ekal is launching a new technology driven era by appointing Dr. Subra Dravida, V.P. of ‘Qualcomm’s technology division as the new President of Ekal-USA. After the previous President, Suresh Iyer, himself a successful entrepreneur in the field of ‘Information Technology’ had brought EVF to the threshold of digitized world, Subraji’s appointment as his successor
was inevitable.
Dr Subra Dravida, a well-known brilliant mind from New England’s technology hub, has been associated with Ekal for some time now.
‘Ekal’ is the largest literacy movement globally undertaken by NRIs and Indians, that also provide healthcare training, economic empowerment and integrated village development to the
rural folks. Currently, it is running 78,000 schools that is grooming 2.1 million each year across rural-tribal parts of India.
Dr Subra Dravida has generously supported Ekal from the beginning. He has sponsored ‘Ekal-on-wheels’ (mobile computer training van) for Telangana and supported ‘Integrated Village Development’ for Andhra Pradesh.
As for his vision, Subraji wants digital technology, equipped with tablets and computers to transform education, train teachers, add vocational skills and expand Ekal’s reach. Swami Vivekananda has been the guiding light in his life’s journey and according to him, ‘Jnâna (knowledge), Bhakti (dedication), and Karma yoga (selfless efforts) all converge at one point in Ekal’

EL PASO, TX – U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers working at the Paso Del Norte international border crossing in downtown El Paso, foiled a methamphetamine smuggling attempt by a 15-year-old U.S. citizen.
“This seizure once again proves that smugglers can come in all ages,” said CBP El Paso Port Director Ray Provencio. “CBP officers have stopped U.S. citizens and foreign travelers, teens, senior citizens, single adults and family units attempting to smuggle drugs across the border. There is no one type of smuggler.” The interception occurred on Oct. 4 when the young teen arrived from Mexico via the pedestrian lanes. A CBP canine conducting inspections alerted to the odor of narcotics emitting from the juvenile. The border crosser was then referred to secondary where a pat down search was conducted resulting in the discovery of packages secured to his thighs. The packages were found to contain .09 pounds of methamphetamine. The juvenile was turned over to Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers.

NEWARK, NJ- All across the United States, gas station owners have been hit with high expenses with renovating, EMV-compliance, and keeping up with the gas prices. Consumers have also been weary of whether or not they want to pay at a gas station since many haven’t upgraded to be EMV-compliant. However, gas station owners who wish to upgrade cannot afford the costs and are losing customers.
There are many ways in which EMV makes transactions more secure at a gas station. Europay, Mastercard, and Visa (EMV) is a technology that stores the cardholder’s information on a magnetic chip. It can only be read by special readers, making copying and stealing the card’s information more difficult. This technology has helped reduce fraud rates by as much as 76% in card-present environments. Gas stations that haven’t upgraded are more subject to consumers using fraudulent card payment methods.
However, implementing EMV can be expensive, and it is hard for retailers to do renovations and lose business for days, if not weeks. Installing EMV-
compliant readers at the pumps can require either replacing the pumps and/ or lots of digging and mess. If retailers want to convert their fueling point terminals, it can cost between $6,000 and $10,000 per pump. Also, if older pumps need to be replaced, retailers incur additional costs by purchasing a new pump and digging into the concrete. NRS offers NRS Petro for gas stations, which is way more affordable than competitors. It includes a pumpintegrated POS so that customers can purchase items at the register in the c-store while paying for their gas. And with NRS Petro, EMV compliance is a snap! NRS Petro’s solution for gas stations is affordable and clean, with integrated NRS Pay credit card processing. NRS Pay is well known in the industry for its honesty and integrity.
NRS offers NRS Petro for gas stations, which is way more affordable than competitors. It includes a pump-integrated POS so that customers can purchase items at the register in the c-store while paying for their gas.
The retailer gets a free credit card reader, with ZERO hidden fees, no long-term contact and no early-termination fee. NRS Petro, the industry’s premium gas station service, can also help owners upgrade to a pump-integrated POS that can read credit card chips to prevent fraud and credit card theft. Together, this makes consumers feel more secure when filling up at your gas station. This
means more business and revenue, which makes this a win-win situation for consumers and retailers. Visit NRS petro.com to learn all about how NRS Petro can help you upgrade your fueling station. But even if a gas station can save thousands of dollars with NRS Petro, upgrading still costs money; and not all gas station owners have liquid capital to use for this purpose. There is a solution to this problem. National Retail Solutions (NRS) may be able to help you by giving you a cash advance to pay these expenses. Through its division, NRS Funding, it can help pay for EMV compliance and be used for payroll, rainy days, renovations, etc.
If retailers are worried about paying back the money, NRS Funding has flexible payback plans, making the process stress-free. The marriage of NRS Funding with NRS Petro is a match made in heaven for gas station owners!
Obtaining business funding is as easy as 1-2-3. With a ten-minute application and a free quote, $2,500-$500K can be available within 24-48 hours. To get started and obtain cash for your gas station or other business, call (800) 212-1477 or apply at getnrsfunding.com
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in partnership with Princess Cruises, expanded the use of facial biometrics into the debarkation process at the Port of San Francisco, becoming the latest seaport to modernize efforts to revolutionize cruise travel.
“With a resurgence in tourism, CBP is working closely with our cruise industry partners to efficiently and securely process arriving international passengers,” said David Salazar, CBP’s Director of Field Operations in San Francisco. “Facial biometrics further enhances the travel experience by utilizing safe, touch-free technology that streamlines entry procedures.” When debarking the cruise vessel at a U.S. seaport, passengers will pause for a photo that will be compared to the traveler’s existing passport or visa photo in secure DHS systems to biometrically verify their identity. Once verified, passengers are allowed to proceed through inspections and exit the terminal.
NEW YORK, NY- Times Square is officially a gun-free zone, although for how long is unclear as a high-stakes legal case winds its way through the courts.
Mayor Eric Adams signed a bill Tuesday that bans concealed carry firearms from the iconic destination — a move he said would keep New Yorkers and the city’s 56 million yearly tourists from living in fear.
“We’re going to make sure we create an environment where those who visit the city, such as Times Square, won’t have to be paralyzed with the fear of knowing that someone is carrying in a gun in this area,” he said.
But the gun ban’s future is in doubt. Adams signed the bill days after an upstate judge shot down much of New
York’s new law — which was passed in response to a controversial recent Supreme Court decision that severely curtailed the ability of cities and states to place restrictions on firearms — that aimed to ban firearms in “sensitive” locations such as Times Square. New York Attorney General Letitia James this week appealed the ruling and, at least temporarily, kept the law alive. She argued the law is necessary to protect public safety. “As the data confirm, more guns carried in more places by more people result in more crime, violence, and homicide,” her appeals states.
Stephen Louis, an attorney with the city’s law department, said the judge’s ruling on the law is on hold while James’ appeal goes through federal court.
NEW YORK, NY -The Statue of Liberty once again will welcome the huddled mass into her crown. Reservations to visit the statue’s crown quietly reopened Tuesday after a two-year hiatus prompted by the coronavirus pandemic. But sightseers yearning to visit likely still will have a wait — reservations are limited. “Due to its extreme popularity, tickets to the crown must be reserved prior to visiting,” the National Park Service’s Statue of Liberty site states. “There are a limited number of crown tickets per day.” The crown and the statue closed to the public in 2020 as New York City — and the nation — reeled from the pandemic. Liberty Island reopened a few months later, while the Statue of Liberty’s pedestal took another year. The crown’s reopening will allow adventurous visitors to climb the 162 stairs up to the top, according to the National Park Service. “There is no elevator service to the Crown,” the NPS’s site states. “The climb is strenuous.” But the view of New York Harbor is unparalleled.
Tickets can only be reserved online through Statue City Cruises or by phone at 877-LADY-TIX.
It’s learnt that he was offered the post of IPL chairman. However, sources said, he conveyed that he wasn’t interested, focusing instead on becoming the ICC chairman or continuing as BCCI president. Both didn’t happen.
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is about to become a former BCCI president and unlikely to be the cricket board’s choice for the post of ICC chairman, either — even as secretary Jay Shah is expected to continue with his “team” set to take charge of key positions.
Roger Binny, a member of 1983 World Cup-winning team and Karnataka Cricket Association president, is set to become the new BCCI chief “unopposed”.
In fact, the BCCI election next Tuesday is expected to be a formality since none of the office-bearers’ posts had more than one nomination on the first day of filing the papers. With Wednesday being the last day for filing nominations, those in the know say the new BCCI power panel has already been decided and a consensus reached after several rounds of talks over the past month.

With the unassuming Binny replacing the charismatic Ganguly at the top, Shah is expected to be the face of India’s cricket administration. The influence wielded by Shah, who is the son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, is reflected in the new board team.
“Roger Binny has filed the nomination for the president’s post, myself for the vicepresident’s post, Jay Shah for secretary, Ashish Shelar for treasurer and Devajit Saikia has filed the nomination for
the joint secretary’s post,” BCCI vice president Rajiv Shukla, who is the only official besides Shah who is expected to retain his post, told reporters. Shelar, a BJP MLA, is the party’s Mumbai president and chief whip. He will replace Arun Dhumal, the brother of Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, as treasurer. Dhumal, it is learnt, will be IPL chairman. Saikia is a close aide of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
“On an eventful day at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai, Ganguly’s future was the talking point. It’s learnt that he was offered the post of IPL chairman. Kolkata: (IANS) A round of political mud-slinging has erupted in West Bengal between Trinamool Congress and BJP over Sourav Ganguly’s exit as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President.
Trinamool Congress state General Secretary and party spokesman, Kunal Ghosh said that the fact Ganguly is existing as the BCCI President and the son of a heavyweight BJP leader is continuing as the board Secretary is simply not acceptable.
“Only Sourav Ganguly can give an explanatory answer in the matter. I am not in a position to answer how far he will open up with this political explanation in the matter. But there was a point of time when BJP tried to spread a message throughout West Bengal that Sourav Ganguly will be soon there in their camp. That message was also spread through a development of a heavyweight BJP leader having dinner at his residence. Now BJP had to face questions on the gradual fading out of the message that they tried to spread,” he said.
BJP’s state spokesman, Samik Bhattacharya said that BJP has reached this stage nationally without depending on any single individual or without any kind of compromise. “It is pointless to claim that BJP will be unable to establish its strong base in West Bengal unless Sourav Ganguly joins the party. Actually, making baseless allegations against BJP has become a habit of Trinamool Congress.
Barbora Krejcikova clinched a second successive WTA title with a stunning come-from-behind victory over world number one Iga Swiatek in the Ostrava final on Sunday. The world number
23 triumphed 5-7, 7-6 (7/4), 6-3 to add the Czech trophy to her victory in Tallinn last weekend. Krejcikova’s success snapped French and US Open champion Swiatek’s 10-final win streak and gave the 26-year-old Czech a fifth career singles title. Swiatek, who had racked up her 60th win of the season on Saturday, went into Sunday’s final having won both her previous meetings with Krejcikova.
The 21-year-old Pole won in straight sets on the hard courts of Miami last year before a three-set victory on the clay of Rome two months later. On Sunday, Krejcikova took the tough route to victory having trailed 5-1 in the opening set before battling back to claim the match in three hours and 16 minutes.
Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur has been handed a three-year ban for the use of a prohibited substance (Stanozolol). According to an Athletics Integrity Unity (AIU) statement, the Indian athlete’s ban will be in effect from 29 March 2022.
“On 28 March 2022, the World AntiDoping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory in Lausanne, Switzerland reported an Adverse Analytical Finding in the Sample for the presence of Stanozolol metabolites,” AIU in the statement said.
India’s stand-in ODI captain Shikhar Dhawan is happy that his team was able to show a lot of character on tough pitches during the three-match series against South Africa. After losing the first game in Lucknow, India clinched
the series with two one-sided victories over the Proteas. “The boys showed great character on such tough batting pitches. The bowlers were clinical today,” Dhawan said after the match. “I am proud of the boys, the way they played in the series. The way they carried the responsibility and showed maturity.
Kaur, 26, became an overnight star after finishing sixth at the Tokyo Olympics and the only Indian woman to break the 65 metres barrier but she was provisionally suspended after testing positive for Stanozolol, a banned anabolic steroid, in May 2022. Kamalpreet was part of the national camp conducted by the Athletics Federation of India and also was included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme.

Poha has a high iron and calcium content when compared to other foods. And it has a much lower glycaemic index than white rice, says Debjani Banerjee, Dietetics Incharge, PSRI Hospital, New Delhi.
Given our early morning rush and the need to have a powerpacked breakfast that can be prepared quickly, poha or flattened rice is emerging as the best bet, particularly for diabetics. Blood sugar friendly, lactose-free, gluten-free, heart healthy, fat-free, poha ticks off all the right boxes.
How Poha scores over idli
Poha is the best breakfast food because it packs approximately 70 per cent of healthy carbohydrates and 30 per cent fat. “Its fibre content allows the sugar to be released slowly and steadily into the bloodstream, instead of causing an unexpected jump, thereby avoiding sudden spikes. That’s why if you want to fuel up for your day fast, poha does a better job rather than rice, idli or dosa.
You can add other nutrients and ingredients
“Since it’s cooked along with a number of vegetables, like peas, cauliflower, beans, carrot, coriander and even crunchy peanuts, your plate becomes more nutritious and filling. It’s a flexible meal option and packs in a nutritious punch,” says Banerjee.
Sits easy on the stomach
Poha is very light on the stomach and can be easily digested. Therefore, it can either be had as the first morning meal or as a light evening meal. “Poha will never cause bloating and keep you full for longer. It’s also quite low in calories. One bowl of cooked vegetable poha has just around 250 calories, along with a number of essential vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Due to the presence of curry leaves, the poha becomes heart-healthy,” advises Banerjee. If you add some peanuts to the mix, they can raise the number of calories in the meal and be a good source of antioxidants and protein. So, if you’re overweight, you may want to skip them.

New York: (IANS) Over 30 years since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), some doctors harbour biases toward people with disabilities, and even actively avoid accepting them as patients, a new study has found.
In focus group discussions with about two dozen US doctors, researchers
found that many said they lacked the knowledge and skill to care for patients with disabilities. Even basic physical accommodations, like accessible buildings and medical equipment, were an issue.
While some doctors said they did the best they could, others expressed negative attitudes, saying that patients with disabilities were “entitled”, or that providing care to them was a burden, said US News & World Report in its report of the study.
Additionally, those surveyed insisted that this is a systemic problem, as medical school and post-graduate training do not prepare doctors for meeting the needs of patients with disabilities.
Another broad problem is insurance reimbursement, which does not factor in the longer appointments that are often necessary for patients with more complex needs, according to the findings published in the October issue of the journal Health Affairs.
New York: (IANS) A simple ultrasound technique can be used to move, reposition or break up kidney stones, all while the patient is awake, a new study has revealed.
The technique combines the use of two ultrasound technologies to offer an option to move kidney stones out of the ureter with minimal pain and no anaesthesia, according to doctors from University of Washington School of Medicine (UW Medicine).
In the procedure, the physician uses a handheld transducer placed on the skin to direct ultrasound waves towards the stone.
The ultrasound can then be used to move and reposition the stones to promote their passage, a process called ultrasound propulsion, or to break up the stone, a technique called burst wave lithotripsy (BWL).
Unlike shock wave lithotripsy, which is the standard procedure now in use and requires sedation, this technology doesn’t hurt, said lead author Dr M Kennedy Hall, an emergency medicine doctor at UW Medicine.
“It’s nearly painless, and you can do it while the patient is awake, and without sedation, which is critical,” Hall said.
The research team hopes that, with this new technology, the procedure of moving or breaking up the stones could eventually be performed in a clinic or emergency room setting.
Stones in the ureter, which leads from the kidney to the bladder, can cause severe pain and are a common reason for emergency department visits.
Most patients with ureteral stones are advised to wait to see if the stone will pass on its own.
However, this observation period can last for weeks, with nearly one-fourth of patients eventually requiring surgery, Hall noted.
Twenty-nine patients participated in the new study. Sixteen were treated with propulsion alone and 13 with propulsion and burst wave lithotripsy. In 19 patients, the stones moved.
In two cases, the stones moved out of the ureter and into the bladder. Burst wave lithotripsy fragmented the stones in seven of the cases. At a two-week follow up, 18 of 21 patients (86 per cent) whose stones were located lower in the ureter, closer to the bladder, had passed their stones.
In this group, the average time to stone passage was about four days, the study noted. One of these patients felt “immediate relief” when the stone was dislodged from the ureter, the study stated.
