prices in the US. “When the price of gas goes up, other expenses get cut. That’s why I have been doing everything in my power to reduce gas prices since Putin’s invasion of Ukraine caused these prices to spike and rattled international oil markets,” he said in a speech. Biden said the Department of Energy will release another 15 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, extending the previously announced release, through the month of December.
He said independent analysts have confirmed that drawdowns from the reserves so far have played a big role in bringing down oil prices. So, we’re going to continue to responsibly use that national asset, he said.
Right now, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is more than half full with about 400 million barrels of oil. That’s more than enough for any emergency drawdown, he said.
The United States is aware of reports of Pulitzer-winning Kashmiri journalist Sanna Irshad Mattoo allegedly being prevented from travelling to the country, a State Department official has said.
Washington, Oct 20 (PTI) Ahead of the crucial mid-term polls, US President Joe Biden has announced a slew of measures to lower gas prices, which have been hurting the middle class. Biden, in a major policy speech, reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin was responsible for the hike in energy
“With my announcement today, we’re going to continue to stabilise markets and decrease the prices at a time when the actions of other countries have caused such volatility,” he said. The US, he said, needs to responsibly increase oil production without delaying or deferring the transition to clean energy. He asserted that his administration has not stopped or slowed oil production. “We’re producing 12 million barrels of oil per day. And by the end of this year, we will be producing 1 million barrels a day, more than the day in which I took office. In fact, we’re on track for record oil production in 2023,” he said.
Mattoo had on Tuesday said she was stopped at the IGI Airport in Delhi from flying to the US to received the prestigious award.
“We are aware of the reports of Ms Mattoo being prevented from travelling to the US and are tracking these developments closely,” State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel told reporters at his daily news conference.
“We are committed to supporting press freedom. And as the secretary has noted, a shared commitment to democratic values, including the respect for the independence of the press, is a bedrock of the US-India relationship,” he said.
Los Angeles, Oct 19 (IANS) Over 27,000 monkeypox cases had been confirmed in the US as of Monday, according to the latest data of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
California has the most confirmed cases among US states so far, with 5,278 cases, followed by New York with 4,039 and Florida with 2,648, Xinhua news agency reported, citing the CDC data.
Monkeypox cases are continuing to decline in the US. As of October 12, the country recorded a seven-day average of 63 cases, down from the record high of 583 daily cases recorded on August 1. Monkeypox infections are rarely fatal, with most cases resolving within two to four weeks. According to the World Health Organization, the disease has a fatality rate of around 3 to 6 per cent.
Washington (IANS) Two US congressional committees have asked for information about the water crisis in Jackson, the capital of Mississippi state, earlier this year.
Carolyn Maloney, chairwoman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, and Bennie Thompson, chairman of the chamber’s Committee on Homeland Security, made the request in a letter to Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves on Monday, reports Xinhua news agency.
Torrential rain in the state capital caused floodwater to seep into the O.B. Curtis Water Treatment Plant in late August, leading to the failure of the backup pumps upon which the plant relied. The resulting system-wide loss of water pressure left Jackson residents without reliable access to safe drinking water for more than two weeks.
Washington, Oct 19 (IANS) Black, Hispanic, and American Indian or Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults in the US are more likely to be hospitalised with flu, and less likely to be vaccinated against the infection, according to a new report by the CDC. The report released Tuesday surveyed flu hospitalisation rates from 2009 to 2022 and vaccination coverage from 2010 to 2022 by race and ethnicity, reports Xinhua news agency. Flu vaccination coverage has been consistently lower among Black, Hispanic, and AI/AN adults since 2010, the report showed. During the 2021 to 2022 season, flu vaccination coverage was 54 per cent among White and Asian adults, compared to 42 per cent among Black adults, 38 per cent among Hispanic adults, and 41 per cent among AI/AN adults.
Former US President Donald Trump has answered questions under oath in a lawsuit brought against him by an advice columnist who says he raped her.
E Jean Carroll alleges the attack took place in a New York luxury department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.
Mr Trump denied the claim and said Ms Carroll was lying, prompting her to sue him for defamation.
Ms Carroll’s attorney did not release details of the deposition, but said it took place on Wednesday.
A civil trial in the case is scheduled for 6 February.
“We’re pleased that on behalf of our
client, E Jean Carroll, we were able to take Donald Trump’s deposition today,” a spokesperson for law firm Kaplan Hecker & Fink said.
“We are not able to comment further.”
Mr Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, said
in a statement: “As we have said all along, my client was pleased to set the record straight today.
“This case is nothing more than a political ploy like many others in the long list of witch hunts against Donald Trump.”
It is unclear what Mr Trump said during the deposition, or whether he spoke in person or remotely. According to CNN, he participated from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
In a 2019 article for New York magazine, Ms Carroll - a longtime Elle advice columnist - said she had a chance encounter with Mr Trump in late 1995 or early 1996 at the department store Bergdorf Goodman.
She said she was helping him pick out a gift and the two of them ended up in a dressing room, where she alleges that he raped her. She says she was 52 and he was around 50, and Mr Trump was married to Marla Maples.
At the time, Ms Carroll also said she told two friends about the incident. One advised her to go to the police, but the other warned her to keep quiet, saying: “Forget it! He has 200 lawyers. He’ll bury you.” Mr Trump quickly dismissed the allegation, accusing Ms Carroll of lying to sell her book. She then filed a defamation lawsuit against Mr Trump while he was US president, saying his comments had harmed her reputation.

Liz Truss resigned as UK prime minister after a brief and chaotic tenure that saw her announce a massive package of unfunded tax cuts before unwinding most of it in the face of a market rout.
Truss, 47, quit after just 44 days in office, becoming the shortest-ruling prime minister in British history. She came to power in early September promising an all-out push for growth, but her program proved unpalatable to financial markets as both the pound and gilts tanked amid concerns about how she’d pay for her economic plans.
Her departure leaves the ruling Conservative Party badly damaged, languishing more than 30 points behind Labour in the polls after 12 1/2 years in power. Her successor will become the party’s fifth premier in less than seven years since the 2016 Brexit referendum
ushered in a period of unprecedented chaos in British politics.
Truss said the party aims to choose her successor within a week and that she will stay on as prime minister until then. Whoever it is will face a formidable task in repairing the Tory party’s reputation and the economy in time for a general election which must take place in January 2025. Truss’s tenure has all but guaranteed post-Brexit Britain’s
immediate future is one of higher borrowing costs, weak growth, tax hikes and spending cuts.
“It’s a shambles and a disgrace,” veteran Tory MP Charles Walker told the BBC on Oct. 19. “The damage they have done to our party is extraordinary.”
Candidates for the top job are likely to include Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, newly promoted from the back benches after Truss sacked Kwasi Kwarteng in a bid to restore calm in the markets, as well as former Chancellor Rishi Sunak -- runner-up to Truss in this summer’s leadership contest. Other contenders in the summer are also likely to be in the fray, including Penny Mordaunt, Kemi Badenoch and Tom Tugendhat. Former Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who was sacked on Oct. 19, may also be in the running.
Truss’s undoing was ultimately a lack of political instinct and awareness of economic reality.
LONDON, Oct 19 (Reuters) - Britain’s Suella Braverman quit as interior minister on Wednesday, saying she had to go after she breached government rules but that she had concerns over the direction of Prime Minister Liz Truss’s government.
The second senior minister to leave the government in less than a week, Braverman’s departure heaps yet more pressure on Truss as she fights to stay in power just over six weeks after she entered Downing Street. “I have made a mistake, I accept responsibility; I resign,” Braverman said in letter to Truss posted on Twitter. She said she had sent an official document from her personal email to a parliamentary colleague, adding that this marked “a technical infringement of the rules” and that it was therefore “right for me to go”.
Truss, who became prime minister on Sept. 6, initially installed a cabinet of senior ministers who were loyal to her libertarian wing of the Conservative Party. But the launch of a nowscrapped economic programme forced her to fire her finance minister Kwasi Kwarteng and appoint Jeremy Hunt as his replacement. Hunt had backed Truss’s rival for the leadership, Rishi Sunak.
Consumer prices in Britain rose 10.1 per cent in September from a year earlier, continuing their steep climb as the nation grapples with rapidly increasing food prices, high energy costs and political uncertainty.
The annual inflation rate returned to its fastest pace since 1982, matching the pace set in July. It rose from 9.9 per cent in August. Inflation was expected to peak next month, at a slightly higher rate, but a reversal in the government’s policy to hold down household energy bills has made the future path of prices even more uncertain.
President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia declared martial law on Wednesday in four regions of Ukraine that Moscow recently annexed but that it does not fully control. Separately, he handed more power to regional governors in Russian areas.
A presidential decree announced martial law in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions —
whose annexation by Russia last month every country besides North Korea considers illegal. “I signed a decree on the introduction of martial law in these four constituent entities of the Russian Federation,” Putin said at the start of a meeting of his Security Council via video conference, referring to the four Ukrainian regions that the Kremlin unilaterally declared to be part of Russia.
An Iranian female competitive climber left South Korea on Tuesday after competing at an event in which she climbed without her nation’s mandatory headscarf covering, authorities said. Farsi-language media outside Iran warned she may have been forced to leave early by Iranian officials and could face arrest back home, which Tehran quickly denied. The decision by Elnaz Rekabi, a multiple medalist in competitions, to forgo the headscarf, or hijab, came as protests sparked by the September 16 death in custody of a 22-year-old woman have entered the fifth week.
Truss had been struggling to keep her grip on power after a string of political tribulations since she came to office

IRCC also said that minors under the age of 18 will be eligible to apply for citizenship online by the end of the year. This is a significant increase over the 2021-2022 fiscal year and even exceeds the pre-pandemic targets of 2019-2020, when 253,000 citizenship applications were processed.
London: (IANS) Indian-origin British author and academic Preti Taneja has won the 2022 Gordon Burn Prize for “Aftermath”, her “unflinching work of narrative non-fiction”.
The Gordon Burn Prize celebrates the year’s most dazzlingly bold and forward-thinking fiction and nonfiction written in English.
“Aftermath” was selected by a panel of judges, made up of sportswriter and columnist Jonathan Liew, author Denise Mina (chair), broadcaster Stuart Maconie, artist and poet Heather Phillipson, and writer Chitra Ramaswamy.
The killer of an Indian-American Sikh sheriff’s deputy in Texas has been found guilty of murder with the possibility of the death penalty, according to media reports. A jury on Monday found former convict Robert Soli guilty of capital murder in the killing of Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Sandeep Dhaliwal in September 2019 near Houston.
Dhaliwal had made headlines when the obtained a religious exemption in 2015 to wear a turban as part of his uniform.
Ottawa: (IANS) Canada aims to grant citizenship to 300,000 people in the 2022-2023 fiscal year, a move likely to benefit many Indians.
The Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) memo recommends that it process a total of 285,000 decisions and 300,000 new citizens by March 31, 2023.
A decision means a review of an application which is then approved, denied, or marked as incomplete.
The citizenship target means that 300,000 approved applicants must take the oath of citizenship, which would be either in person or virtually.
In March 2020, IRCC became unable to process most applications due to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. This was because the department was only able to process paper applications that were mailed to a central location.
IRCC was unable to conduct interviews with candidates and there could not be any oath swearing at citizenship ceremonies. So far in the 2022-2023 fiscal, Canada has welcomed 116,000 new citizens and is on track to achieve its target. By comparison, over the same period in 2021, the country had only sworn in 35,000 people.
Though there is no country-wise breakup of the numbers, Indians are the top immigrant group to take up residence in Canada in 2022.
London: (IANS) Indian-origin British Sikh Army officer Preet Chandi, who made history by trekking to the South Pole, is now going for a record-breaking 1,100 miles trek across Antarctica -- solo and unaided!
Captain Chandi, also known as “Polar Preet”, became the first woman of colour in January this year to complete a solo and unsupported 700-mile trip to the South Pole in just 40 days, five days ahead of her finishing schedule. The 33-year-old will pull all her kit and supplies on a sledge (pulk), weighing around 120kg (19 stone) at the start of her epic journey in November, while battling temperatures of -50c and wind speeds of up to 60mph. “I expect the journey to take approximately 75 days. Having done 700 miles to the South Pole, I know I can do 1,100 miles,” Chandi, a physiotherapist with the British Army, said.
Chandru Acharya currently serves on the Planning Commission of Canton Township, Michigan, and earlier served as a commissioner on the Michigan Asian Pacific Affairs Commission.
Indian-American Chandru Acharya from Michigan has been appointed to the Faith-Based Security Advisory Council of Homeland Security.
Acharya is the lone Hindu voice in this committee of 25 distinguished faith leaders from the United States, a media release said on Monday. He is widely acknowledged in the Hindu American community and interfaith forums for building bridges with various faith communities through dialogue and peace initiatives, it said.
Over the last two decades, Acharya has been actively involved with diverse community organisations that work locally and nationally for social equity and pluralism. Raising crosscultural awareness among children, embracing inclusivity by working across faith lines during challenging times such as the Covid pandemic, representing a voice of the minority Hindu Americans during incidents of ‘Hinduphobia’, and providing cultural sensitivity training to the local officials are some of his widely acknowledged accomplishments, the release stated.

WASHINGTON, DC— Today the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), in consultation with the Department of Labor (DOL), announced that it will be issuing a regulation that will make available to employers an additional 64,716 H-2B temporary nonagricultural worker visas for fiscal year (FY) 2023, on top of the 66,000 H-2B visas that are normally available each fiscal year. By making these supplemental visas available at the outset of the fiscal year, which began on October 1, 2022, DHS is acting swiftly to address employers’ needs for additional seasonal workers. At the same time, DHS and DOL are working together to institute robust protections for U.S. and foreign workers alike, including by ensuring that employers first seek out and recruit American workers for the jobs to be filled, as the visa program requires, and that foreign workers hired are not exploited by unscrupulous employers. To strengthen these efforts, DHS and DOL also announced the creation of a new White House-convened Worker Protection Taskforce, as described below.
“The Department of Homeland Security is moving with unprecedented speed to meet the needs of American businesses,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “At a time of record job growth, this full year
allocation at the very outset of the fiscal year will ensure that businesses can plan for their peak season labor needs. We also will bolster worker protections to safeguard the integrity of the program from unscrupulous employers who would seek to exploit the workers by paying substandard wages and maintaining unsafe work conditions.”
The H-2B supplemental includes an allocation of 20,000 visas to workers from Haiti and the Central American countries of Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. This advances the Biden Administration’s pledge, under the Los Angeles Declaration for Migration and Protection, to expand legal pathways as an alternative to irregular migration. This is also consistent with the joint commitment President Biden and President López Obrador of Mexico made in July to work together to broaden opportunities for seasonal and circular labor and ensure that migration is a choice and not a necessity. This is one of many ways that the United States and Mexico are partnering to manage migration and fuel economic growth, as
discussed in the bilateral working group on labor mobility.
American businesses in industries as varied as hospitality and tourism, landscaping, seafood processing, and more depend on seasonal workers to meet demand from consumers. The supplemental visa allocation will address the need for seasonal workers in areas where too few U.S. workers are available, helping contribute to the American economy.
In addition to the 20,000 visas reserved for nationals of Haiti and the Northern Central American countries, the remaining 44,716 supplemental visas will be available to returning workers who received an H-2B visa, or were otherwise granted H-2B status, during one of the last three fiscal years. The regulation will allocate these remaining supplemental visas for returning workers between the first half and second half of the fiscal year to account for the need for additional seasonal workers over the course of the year, with a portion of the second half allocation reserved to meet the demand for workers during the peak summer season.
The H-2B program permits employers to temporarily hire noncitizens to perform nonagricultural labor or services in the United States. The employment must be of a temporary nature, such as a one-time occurrence, seasonal need, or intermittent need.
Employers seeking H-2B workers must take a series of steps to test the U.S. labor market. They must also certify in their petitions that there are not enough U.S. workers who are able, willing, qualified, and available to perform the temporary work for which they seek a prospective foreign worker. In addition, employers must certify that employing H-2B workers will not adversely affect the wages and working conditions of similarly employed U.S. workers.
DHS and DOL acknowledge that H-2B workers face structural disincentives to reporting or leaving abusive conditions, and often lack power to exercise their rights in the face of exploitative employment situations. The departments emphasize the importance of protecting all H-2B workers from exploitation and abuse, and of ensuring, consistent with law, that employers do not refuse to hire or appropriately recruit U.S. workers who are able, willing, qualified, and available to perform the temporary work. The forthcoming temporary final rule implementing this allocation will feature several provisions to protect both U.S. and H-2B workers. For example, DHS will subject employers that have committed certain labor law violations in the H-2B program to additional scrutiny in the supplemental cap petition process. This additional scrutiny is aimed at ensuring compliance with H-2B program requirements and obligations.
BOSTON, MA- This week: An Indian man admits to selling Americans smuggled, controlled medicines prescription-free. The U.S. Adderall shortage continues. Dangerous counterfeit medicines were found in Gambia, Mexico and Pakistan. Captagon being produced in Syria. News about counterfeit pills in 14 states and the District of Columbia.
Manish Kumar pleaded guilty in Massachusetts federal court for smuggling prescription drugs from Singapore and India from 2015 to 2019.
Court documents state that Kumar was a partner in a Mumbai-based company
that sold generic prescription drugs, including controlled substances such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, tapentadol, and tramadol, to U.S. patients without prescriptions. Kumar’s company employed internet, radio, and telephone for advertising and operated a call center in India to take orders and payment information.
Seven of the nine companies that supply Adderall to people with ADHD in the United States are reporting shortages.
Americans should be even more alert to the possibility that online storefronts that may look legitimate are selling counterfeit Adderall.
LAYAETTE, IN- The Purdue University student who allegedly killed his roommate in their dorm told he had been “blackmailed” when asked about a motive for the crime.
Ji Min Sha, 22, made his first court appearance Friday before Tippecanoe County Magistrate Sarah Wyatt since being arrested for allegedly stabbing Varun Chheda to death.
“I was blackmailed,” the suspect said, without elaborating When asked if he had anything to say to the victim’s family, Sha replied: “I am very sorry.”
Last week, Sha appeared to mutter “I love my family” as he was hauled to jail for allegedly killing Chheda, a senior
data science major who the Tippecanoe County coroner said died of “multiple sharp-force traumatic injuries.”
Sha called police about 12:45 a.m. Wednesday to say he had fatally stabbed his roommate in their room at McCutcheon Hall, WLFI reported, citing a probable cause affidavit filed Friday. Police found Chheda in a chair and Sha covered in what appeared to be blood, according to the outlet. They also observed what they believed to be blood spattered on the wall, along with a pool of blood and a folding knife on the floor.
The suspect allegedly admitted that the knife was his and that he had used it to kill his roommate.
SALEM, MS- Upset Hindus are urging “World-Renowned” Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) in Salem (Massachusetts) to immediately withdraw from its shop and online the plush toys featuring Hindu deities Krishna-Ganesh-Hanuman, calling it highly inappropriate.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesh and Lord Hanuman were greatly revered in Hinduism and were meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be thrown around loosely on the floor, bathrooms, cars, etc.; or “attach it to your baby’s diaper bag” or “press its belly” to make it sing for you; or hit by feet; or squeezed; or used as a pillow or play ball; etc. (Description of Lord Hanuman Plush toy even hints at bending its “flexible tail”). Inappropriate usage of sacred Hindu deities or concepts
or symbols or icons for mercantile or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees, Zed added.
Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, also urged PEM CEO Lynda Roscoe Hartigan and Trustees
Chair Stuart W. Pratt to offer a formal apology, besides withdrawing KrishnaGanesh-Hanuman plush toys from Museum Shop and website. PEM; “nation’s oldest continuously operating museum”, supported by “state
and federal grants” and which claims to focus on “cultural understanding”; should not be in the business of religious appropriation, sacrilege and belittling sacred Hindu deities. It was deeply trivializing of immensely venerated Hindu deities to be treated like this; Rajan Zed indicated
Moreover, it was saddening for the devotees to see Lord Krishna, Lord Ganesh and Lord Hanuman reduced as a toy under the mercy and control of the owner, while in reality the believers put the destinies of themselves in the hands of their deities; Rajan Zed pointed out.
Krishna-Ganesh-Hanuman plush toys were priced between $20 to $38 at PEM Shop.
Founded in 1799, PEM claims its “collection is among the finest of its kind, with superlative works from around the globe and across time”, and also claims to hold “one of the nation’s most important museum-based collections of rare books and manuscripts”.

CHICAGO, IL – A crime alert on Chicago’s North Side, as people are being victimized in Wrigleyville.
The alarming crimes happened near Wrigley Field over the weekend.
Three people were robbed after they got into strangers’ cars. In two of those incidents, the victims were forced to ride along. The incidents happened very early Sunday morning.
In the 3400 block of North Clark, police say a 27-year-old man was walking after midnight when two men forced him into a gray sedan at gunpoint.
Friends of media executive Zulfiqar Ahmad Khan, who went missing in Kenya 80 days ago, have appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure his safe return.
The 48-year-old Khan, or Zulfi as they call him, as one would call him, is an alumnus of St Joseph’s School, Nainital, and Hansraj College, New Delhi. Having an illustrious media career - he last worked as the COO of Balaji Telefilms, and before that was Managing Director of the OTT platform HOOQ and the Business Head.
This necklace I’m wearing is my favourite piece from the collection. I love the complexity of design in this and the combination of emeralds with pear and round diamonds set in rose gold. This unique piece of craftsmanship reflects the might of the river that overcomes obstacles in its path like pebbles, rocks and stones, and continues to flow
Gauri Khan has been an icon for all things luxury for the longest time! The celebrated interior designer and producer has been known to be very private and so it’s been lovely to see her share the screen, albeit briefly, with her friends on an OTT platform, launch her own show on interiors and even make an appearance on Karan Johar’s show after an 18 year hiatus! With the festive season around the corner, we meet Gauri at the launch of luxury atelier Zoya’s magnificent new collection “Beyond- A Boundless Journey”, where she introduced the collection along with Ajoy Chawla, CEO Jewellery Division, Titan.
The duo started their career in fashion in the year 2006 by launching their label, gaining recognition, laurels and several awards along the journey. “Our journey has been super exciting. We seem to have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go. Our brand keeps evolving with time, but the signature remains. We are grateful for our teams and our loyal customers that have supported us throughout this time. It’s a great feeling to be here,” Pankaj shared.
“This is a beautiful ring that I might pick for Suhana. It has beautiful round emeralds flanked by baguette diamonds with a lovely central morganite. It’s like the sun rising on the river.”
I love emeralds. They are even rarer than diamonds and they are a symbol of hope and renewal. In this piece Zoya honours emeralds in their finest glory. Clean silhouettes combined with versatility make a stunning statement.
