Rivals Biden and DeSantis project unity over Hurricane Ian
At least 108 people were killed by Ian, a category four storm.
Mr Biden said Florida’s recovery may take years.
Officials are searching buildings for more victims as crews begin repairs. The president and the Florida governor have previously clashed over pandemic policies, climate change, abortion and LGBT issues.
Most recently Mr Biden slammed Mr DeSantis for flying undocumented migrants to the wealthy liberal enclave of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts. But on Wednesday the two had only warm words for one another as they focused on hurricane relief during a joint press conference in the city of Fort Myers. Mr DeSantis, who is widely expected to run for president in 2024, and his wife met Mr Biden and First Lady Jill Biden on a wharf littered with storm debris.
Trump asks Supreme Court to intervene in Mar-a-Lago dispute
US President Joe Biden and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis have briefly set aside their political differences to tour damage from Hurricane Ian.
After seeing the storm wreckage by helicopter, Mr Biden shook hands with the Republican rising star and they complimented each other.
Mr DeSantis thanked the Bidens for coming to Florida, and said he had been “very fortunate” to have good co-ordination with the federal government.
Mr Biden told reporters that Mr DeSantis had done a “good job”, and that “we have very different political philosophies, but we’ve worked hand in glove.”
Kevin Spacey facing trial on New York sex abuse claim
Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey is due to go on trial on Thursday in a civil lawsuit over an allegation he sexually assaulted a boy 36 years ago.
We are both daughters of India, in a way: Priyanka Chopra tells Kamala Harris
United States Vice President Kamala Harris and Indian actress Priyanka Chopra shared a stage past week, reflecting on their Indian connections, marriage equality and climate change. Chopra, who is not settled in Los Angeles, was invited by the Democratic National Committee’s Women’s Leadership Forum to interview the Vice President for a fireside chat. The Indian actress kicked off the fireside chat with their Indian connection.
“I think we’re both daughters of India, in a way,” Priyanka told the room full of prominent Democrats invited for the conference from across the country.
Mr Spacey is being sued in New York by Anthony Rapp, who says the actor inappropriately touched him at a party in 1986 when he was aged 14.Mr Spacey, 63, is separately facing five charges of sexual assault in the UK. The House of Cards actor has denied the allegations against him. Both Mr Rapp, now 51 and also an actor, and Mr Spacey are expected to be in the Manhattan federal courthouse when the trial opens with jury selection on Thursday.
Mr Rapp says that Mr Spacey was around 26 or 27 years old when he met him at a party at his Manhattan apartment.
In a Buzzfeed article from October 2017, Mr Rapp said that Mr Spacey had picked him up, placed him on a bed and lay down partially on top of him. “I was aware that he was trying to get with me sexually,” Mr Rapp said. His lawsuit says the alleged encounter lasted no more than two minutes and “there was no kissing, no undressing, no reaching under clothes, and no sexualized statements or innuendo”.
Trump sues CNN claiming defamation, seeks $475 million in punitive damages
New York, Oct 6 (IANS) As students gathered at Purdue University campus in the US to hold a candlelight vigil in the memory of slain Indian American student Varun Manish Chheda, his friends, shocked and shattered, remembered him as a “good and humble person”. “He was a good person and a really good student,” a friend, who took classes with slain Indian-American student Varun Manish Chheda, told the local media in the US. Sumeeth Guda, a mathematics and science student, who worked with Chheda on group projects, described him as a hardworking and diligent person, the Purdue Exponent reported.
Donald Trump claims in his lawsuit that CNN had used its considerable influence as a leading news organization to defeat him politically.
Former US president Donald Trump sued CNN for defamation on Monday, seeking $475 million in punitive damages and claiming the network had carried out a “campaign of libel and
slander” against him. Trump claims in his lawsuit, filed in US District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, that CNN had used its considerable influence as a leading news organization to defeat him politically. CNN declined to comment on the case. Trump, a Republican, claims in the 29-page lawsuit that CNN had a long track record of criticising him but had ramped up its attacks in recent months because the network feared that he would run again for president in 2024.
“As a part of its concerted effort to tilt the political balance to the left, CNN has tried to taint the Plaintiff with a series of ever-more scandalous, false, and defamatory labels of ‘racist,’ ‘Russian lackey,’ ‘insurrectionist,’ and ultimately ‘Hitler,’” the lawsuit claims. The lawsuit lists several instances in which CNN appeared to compare Trump to Hitler, including a January 2022 special report by host Fareed Zakaria that included footage of the German dictator.
Lawyers for former US President Donald Trump asked the US Supreme Court on Tuesday to step into the legal fight over the classified documents seized during an FBI search of his Florida estate, escalating a dispute over the powers of an independent arbiter appointed to inspect the records. The Trump team asked the justices to overturn a lower court ruling and allow the arbiter, called a special master, to review the roughly 100 documents with classification markings that were taken in the Aug. 8 search of Mar-a-Lago. A three-judge panel from the Atlanta-based US Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit last month limited the special master’s review to the much larger tranche of non-classified documents.
US to turn Taiwan into arms base
American officials are intensifying efforts to build a giant stockpile of weapons in Taiwan after studying recent naval and air force exercises by the Chinese military around the island, according to current and former officials.
The exercises showed that China would probably blockade the island as a prelude to any attempted invasion, and Taiwan would have to hold out on its own until the US or other nations intervened, if they decided to do that, the current and former officials say. But the effort to transform Taiwan into a weapons depot faces challenges. The US and its allies have prioritised sending weapons to Ukraine, which is reducing their stockpiles, and arms makers are reluctant to open new production lines without a steady stream of long-term orders. And it is unclear how China might respond if the US accelerates shipments of weapons to Taiwan, a democratic, self-governing island that Beijing claims is Chinese territory.
President Biden said last month that the US is “not encouraging” Taiwan’s independence, adding, “That’s their decision.”
Since 1979, Washington has had a policy of reassuring Beijing that it does not support independence.

US believes Ukrainians were behind an assassination in Russia
US officials said they were not aware of the operation ahead of time and would have opposed the killing had they been consulted.
US intelligence agencies believe parts of the Ukrainian government authorised the car bomb attack near Moscow in August that killed Daria Dugina, daughter of a prominent Russian nationalist, an element of a covert campaign that US officials fear could widen the conflict.
The United States took no part in the attack, either by providing intelligence or other assistance, officials said. US officials also said they were not aware of the operation ahead of time and would have opposed the killing had they been consulted. Afterward, US officials admonished Ukrainian officials over the assassination, they said. The closely held assessment of Ukrainian complicity, which has not been previously reported, was shared within the US government last week. Ukraine denied involvement in the killing immediately after the attack, and senior officials repeated those denials when asked about the US intelligence assessment.
Gen Bajwa discusses India, China with US officials
Rawalpindi, Oct 6 (IANS)
Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa discussed matters related to India, China, Afghanistan in his meetings with top US administration officials on his recent visit to Washington, sources told Geo News on Thursday.
The army chief left for Pakistan after concluding his week-long visit to America, where he held meetings with top US officials. Sources said that General Bajwa told the US officials that Pakistan seeks an early resolution of the Kashmir issue, Geo News reported.
He also called for improvement in bilateral relations, trade and investment between Pakistan and the US.
“Pakistan has been a long-standing partner of the US,” the sources quoted the army chief.
Truss urges party to stick together
British Prime Minister Liz Truss on Wednesday urged her fractious party to stick together and help transform the economy and the country, fighting to restore her dwindling authority after a chaotic first month in office.Addressing Conservative lawmakers and members at an annual conference overshadowed by internal bickering and confusion over policy, Truss said the party needed to unite to kick-start stagnant growth and tackle the many problems facing Britain. So far, however, her misfiring attempt to cut £45 billion of taxes and hike government borrowing has sent turmoil through markets and her party, with opinion polls pointing to electoral collapse rather than a honeymoon period for the new leader.
Suella Braverman objects to increasing visas for Indians
London, Oct 6 (IANS) Suella Braverman has again risked upsetting No. 10 after saying she has “reservations” about Britain’s trade deal with India because it could increase immigration to the UK, The Guardian reported. Liz Truss said she wants to sign a trade agreement with India by Diwali at the end of this month. The Indian government is demanding an increase in work and study visas for Indian nationals and earlier this year Boris Johnson said the agreement would lead to increased immigration.
In an interview with the Spectator, UK Home Secretary Braverman said Indian migrants make up the largest number of visa overstayers in the UK. The home secretary also criticised a deal with India, signed by her predecessor Priti Patel, to increase the number of illegal migrants and overstayers returned to the country, saying the agreement “has not necessarily worked very well”.
SKorea, US, Japan hold joint naval drills in East Sea
Seoul, Oct 6 (IANS) South Korea, the United States and Japan staged another joint naval exercise in the East Sea on Thursday with a focus on countering nuclear and missile threats from North Korea.
The exercise involving the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier strike group opened in the international waters of the sea hours after North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles, Seoul’s military said.
Several warships, including South Korea’s King Sejong the Great destroyer, the USS Benfold destroyer belonging to the USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier strike group, and Japan’s Chokai destroyer, were mobilised, Yonhap news agency reported quoting the Seoul’s military.
They simulated scenarios of North Korean ballistic missile launches and focused on detecting, tracking and intercepting them by sharing target information, it said.
Putin signs land grab laws
The Thailand prime minister has alerted all agencies to take action and apprehend the culprit, said a government spokesperson.
At least 31 people were killed on Thursday in a mass shooting at a children’s daycare centre in a northeastern province of Thailand, a police spokesperson said.
Victims included both children and adults, police said in a statement, adding that the gunman was an ex-police officer and a manhunt was underway.
The prime minister has alerted all agencies to take action and apprehend the culprit, a government spokesperson said.
The rate of gun ownership in Thailand is high compared with some other countries in the region but official figures do not include huge numbers of illegal weapons, many of which have been brought in across porous borders over the years from strife-torn neighbours.
Mass shootings are rare but in 2020, a soldier angry over a property deal gone sour killed at least 29 people and wounded 57 in a rampage that spanned four locations.
President Vladimir V. Putin signed more than 400 pages of legislation annexing four Ukrainian regions, the Kremlin said on Wednesday, forging ahead with a parallel reality in which Russia pretends to exercise sovereignty over thousands of square miles of territory that its military does not actually control. Russia’s economy ministry sought to attach real-world benefits to a largely illusory claim, forecasting that the annexation would raise Russia’s production of metallurgy and sunflowers by 20 per cent each, while coal production would increase by 6 per cent.
Indian-origin university student killed in US
A 20-year-old Indian-origin student has been killed in his dormitory in the US state of Indiana and his Korean roommate was taken into custody, according to media reports.
Varun Manish Chheda from Indianapolis, who was studying at Purdue University, was found dead in McCutcheon Hall on the western edge of campus, police said on Wednesday.
Another university student was arrested on a murder charge Wednesday, NBC News quoted the school’s police chief as saying.

Four kidnapped Indian-origin family members have been killed: Sheriff
An Indian-origin eight-month baby, her parents and an uncle who were kidnapped in California have been killed in “a horribly, horribly senseless” crime, according to the local sheriff.
New York, Oct 6 (IANS)
An Indian-origin eight-month baby, her parents and an uncle who were kidnapped in California have been killed in “a horribly, horribly senseless” crime, according to the local sheriff.
Their bodies were found
in a remote farm on Wednesday, Merced County Sheriff Vernon Warnke said. “There is a special place in hell” for the person who committed the crime, he said at a news conference near where the bodies were found. He said that he hoped the district prosecutor would demand the death penalty.
The suspect in the kidnapping, who was arrested on Tuesday after he had tried to kill himself, was talking to investigators, he said. Baby Aroohi Dheri, her parents, Jasleen Kaur, 27, and Jasdeep Singh, 36, and uncle, Amandeep Singh, 49, were
kidnapped on Monday from the family’s trucking business in Merced, about 225 kilometres southeast of San Francisco.
Warnke said that the victims’ family had been informed and arrangements were made through contacts to get them “spiritual guidance to get through this”.
The bodies were found near each other by a farm worker, who informed the authorities, Warnke said. Earlier at a morning news conference, Warnke ruled out that the kidnapping was a hate crime and said money was the likely motive. The suspect, Jesus Manuel Salgado, was convicted in 2005 of an armed robbery and paroled in 2015. His prior record points to a financial motive, he said. Delgado had told his family that he was involved in the kidnapping and they reported it to the authorities, Warnke said.
Before officers reached him, he attempted suicide and was taken to a hospital, he said.Officers waited there for medical clearance to speak to him, he said. After the bodies were found, Warnke said there was a lot of circumstantial evidence against Delgado and they were trying to build direct evidence. He said he was emotional at the news conference because a child has been killed.

Change is the only constant
Actor Shraddha Kapoor completed 12 years in the film industry in February this year. The actor, who made her debut with 2010 film Teen Patti, found popularity after the release of her 2013 film Aashiqui released. Over the year, the actor who has been part of various films, says that while she has learned a lot over the years, her biggest learning has been to constantly evolve as an actor. The actor, who was last seen in Baaghi 3, in 2020, also believes that the treatment of stories has really changed in last few years, especially the way a female character is written and portrayed onscreen.
Shraddha said, “One lesson that I hold close to
Towards the end of his latest standup special — The King’s Jester — comedian Hasan Minhaj reveals the meaning behind that title. His ultimate effort, he says by way of explanation, is to switch seamlessly between satire and sincerity, and trust the audience to understand the difference. This was essentially what he did — to resounding success, mind you — in his first Netflix special, Homecoming King. Minhaj, an alumnus of the Jon Stewart school of political satire, switched things up, and delivered an hour-long set that had the production value of a Broadway spectacle and the self-reflection of a one-

Shraddha eventually became part of films such as Ek Villain, ABCD 2, Ok Jaanu, Half Girlfriend, Haseena Parkar amongst others. She notes that female characters are not written with more thought and investment as compared to the times before she entered the film industry.
“A lot of things have changed since I started off, especially for female actors, “says Shraddha, who adds, “Now we see films made from a female gaze, with the actress being the driving point of the story. Not only are women headlining many films and stories but they are also written in a deeply layered manner, which can create an impact. It’s a great time for women in Indian cinema.”

Creatively, I am in my most active phase of my career: Hansal Mehta
Much like Pratik Gandhi’s oft-quoted dialogue from their superhit web series Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story– Risk hai to isk hai– director Hansal Mehta says his journey has also been about taking chances regardless of failure.
The filmmaker said 11 years ago he decided to only do what he “enjoys”, and since then life has been about working on stories that are close to his heart, travelling and cooking. “Eleven years ago, I decided I will only do what I enjoy. When I say, enjoy, it is like the story should come from within me, the characters should be those that I could discover through the process of making the film.
. “And in that, even if you take risks and if you fail, you pick up the pieces, get up and start all over again. I have started my life all over again so many times that it doesn’t worry me,” Mehta told PTI in an interview here.
The 54-year-old filmmaker, also known for critically acclaimed movies such as Shahid, Citylights, and Aligarh, said he is cherishing the current phase of his professional life.
“Creatively (I am in the) most active phase
of my career. I am enjoying this phase a lot. I am making films that I want to and at the same time, I am also enjoying a good life. I travel, cook, have ample time for friends, listening to music, writing. It is a good space to be in,” he added. This phase is not only creatively enriching but also his busiest.
Coming up, Hansal Mehta has a murder mystery movie with Kareena Kapoor Khan, which is currently in production in London; an action-drama with Kartik Aaryan; Scam season two and a web series on Mahatma Gandhi which reunites him with Pratik Gandhi. Asked if it is overwhelming to work with popular stars, the National Award winner said it is a “privilege” for him. “I love actors and love directing them and working with them. I neither get overwhelmed or bogged down,” he said.
Mehta tasted success in 1993 with his debut directorial project, the popular TV cookery show Khana Khazana with celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor. After many misses at the box office in the early 2000s such as Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!!, Chhal, and Woodstock Villa, his career turnaround came with the biopic on slain lawyer
Shahid Azmi in 2013, which won him the National Film Award for best director.

Doesn’t want to work in Bollywood Mandana Karimi
The latest season of Bigg Boss is under fire for welcoming Sajid Khan as one of the contestants, despite being accused of sexual misconduct by at least nine women.
Actor Mandana Karimi feels sad how the conduct of filmmaker Sajid Khan, who was accused by multiple women–including Mandana herself– of sexual misconduct during the #MeToo movement, has been normalised with his participation in the popular reality show Bigg Boss. Season 16 of the Salman Khan-hosted show has been receiving tremendous flak for welcoming Sajid as one of the contestants, despite media testimony by at least nine women. Late actor Jiah Khan’s sister Karishma Khan had also accused the director of sexually harassing Jiah when she spoke to BBC for the documentary, Death of Bollywood (2021).
During an interview with Hindustan Times, Mandana Karimi said she
was not surprised how the filmmaker was back in the mainstream. “To be honest, I’m not surprised to see him back in the spotlight. For people, life has become like I will put my head under the sand.
“If it is going to benefit me, and I can make money, then who cares? That shows why the MeToo movement in India and many other countries didn’t really reach anywhere,” she said. Mandana said just a few women came forward and spoke about their experiences during the #MeToo movement but “that was it”. There was no action, no social boycott.
Urmila Matondkar to make her digital debut
OTT is a boon for female actors: Ayesha Jhulka
After trying her hands at politics in 2019, actor Urmila Matondkar is all set to make her digital debut with an action-packed thriller web series Tiwari, where she’ll also be performing some gritty action sequences. The makers of the show, Content Engineers, shared a poster of the Urmilla-starrer. Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the poster on his social media platforms. Talking about the show, the actress said in a statement, “This one offered me characters and a story arc that is challenging as a performer and things that I haven’t attempted so far. Written and created by a team of young writers, the team managed to keep me hooked till the end while narrating it. What I liked the most in the story is that at the core, it’s an emotional mother-daughter story but at the same time it has everything from drama to action to some thrilling twists and turns. I can’t wait to start shooting.”
Ayesha Jhulka, one of the popular 1990s stars, says OTT has empowered storytellers to look beyond the stereotypical portrayal of a woman resulting in meaningful roles for actors of all ages. Jhulka, who recently made her OTT debut with the Prime Video series Hush Hush, said she “waited long enough” to do what she really wanted to.
“The OTT has been changing the game for us, for female actors. It is a boon for us. If we didn’t have the OTT, it would have been still the same. It’s only here that more potential towards acting, characters, barring any age or anything, is there,” the actor told PTI in an interview. With Hush Hush, which has an all-female cast, the 50-year-old actor said she was able to break her on-screen image of a girl next door, attained after blockbuster hits Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar and Khiladi.
“I am actually transcending, cutting off that image and going into a different role altogether. That is a big challenge for me as an artist,” she added.
Actor Riteish Deshmukh shares a great bond with filmmaker Karan Johar. But doing a ‘Dharma-film’ isn’t something that has appealed to him. Karan Johar is the head honcho of one of the Hindi cinema’s biggest production houses, Dharma Productions.
During a recent interview for Netflix, Riteish talked about his friendship with Karan. He said, “Karan Johar is one of my best friends. He is my dearest friend. But we have never mixed our friendship and work. My friendship with him is not because I want to work with him.” The actor further shared that he is friends with almost all of his co-stars.
After delivering a smashing performance in his latest entertainer Vikram Vedha, Hrithik Roshan stepped out to feel the festive vibes. The actor visited Falguni Pathak’s garba night on Sunday in Mumbai’s Borivali.
Hrithik and Falguni danced on Gujarati garba ‘Valsadi’ and the singer took to her social media platforms to share pictures and videos of Hrithik dancing with her. In the Instagram post, the singer wrote, “Vasaldi version by Hrithik Roshan. Navratri hein garba toh banta hein.” Hrithik came to the pandal along with Vikram Vedha director duo Pushkar and Gayathri. Their film released in theatres on September 30 and have received critical appreciation from film critics.
Riteish, who is also a friend of Shah Rukh Khan, talked about parties at King Khan’s mansion Mannat in Mumbai. Asked if he had any anecdotes about the palatial house, the Plan A Plan B star shared that the most special thing about the parties is Shah Rukh Khan himself, and how he treats his guests. “Whenever there is a get-together at Mannat, and you have to leave early, the dinner is served at 3 in the morning. Imran Khan “Biggest Liar On Earth”, He Ruined Country’s Economy: Pak PM
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif accused Imran Khan of “injecting poison into society to dangerously polarise the electorate’” since his ouster through a successful noconfidence vote in April.
Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has accused former premier Imran Khan of being the biggest liar on the face of the earth, alleging that the PTI chief has ruined the country’s economy.
In an interview with the UK newspaper The Guardian, which was cited by Dawn, Shehbaz Sharif spoke about the “damage” that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman had done to Pakistan’s domestic and foreign affairs. Addressing Imran Khan’s recent alleged cypher audio leaks, the Prime Minister said that they were “an irrefutable endorsement that he (Imran) is the biggest liar on the face of the earth”. The cypher is an alleged secret diplomatic cable which fuelled conspiracy theories that the US administration wanted to topple Imran Khan’s government and facilitate regime change in the country. The cypher is based on then-envoy Asad Majeed’s meeting with US State Department official Donald Lu, who has been at the centre of PTI’s claim that the US conspired to dislodge Imran from office in April.

“Putin Facing Further Isolation”: US After PM Modi Dials Ukraine’s Zelensky
Putin is facing further isolation from international communities as countries make clear that Putin’s decisions do have a lot of sympathy, said White House.
Washington: Russian President Vladimir Putin is facing isolation from the international community, the White House said as it took note of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“We’re asking that countries around the world, and we’ve been very clear about that, continue to speak out publicly and continue to engage diplomatically on this as well. And so, I think that’s what you’re seeing from the prime minister (of India),” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at her daily news conference on Tuesday. Responding to a question, the press secretary said she doesn’t have anything to read out on any recent conversation between US President Joe Biden and PM Modi.
“But his public comments directly to Putin are very clear. Now is not the time for war. And it’s not the time, he was even more specific to that, he said his war, Putin’s war, he was alluding to,” she said.
The former couple got married in 1994 and have three children together- Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe.
Melinda French Gates and Bill Gates announced their divorce back in May 2021 after nearly 30 years of marriage. It was finalised in August 2021, but the couple announced that they would continue to run their foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation together. Now, in an interview with Fortune Magazine, Melinda opened up about her “unbelievably painful” divorce with Ex-husband Bill. She said, “I had some reasons I just couldn’t stay in that marriage anymore,” French Gates, 58, told Fortune magazine. “But the odd thing about COVID is that it gave me the privacy to do what I needed to do.” She continued, “It’s unbelievably painful, in innumerable ways, but I had the privacy to get through it.” The former couple got married in 1994 and have three children together- Jennifer, Rory and Phoebe. The philanthropist revealed, “I kept working with the person I was moving away from, and I needed to show up and be my best self every single day.” She added, “So even though I might be crying at 9 a.m. and then have to be on a video conference at 10 a.m. with the person I’m leaving, I have to show up and be my best.”
“Look, Putin is facing further isolation from international communities as countries make clear that Putin’s decisions do have a lot of sympathy,” Jean-Pierre said. “When it comes to the potential nuclear threat, we have been very, very clear about that. We take any nuclear weapons or nuclear saber rattling very seriously here,” she said. “I do want to say that we have not seen any reason to adjust our own strategic nuclear posture, nor do we have indication that Russia is preparing to imminently use nuclear weapons,” she said.
The Ukrainians, she said, are fighting for their sovereignty.
“This is something that we believe, not just the US, our allies and partners around the world,” she said, The US is going to continue to make sure that they are there for the Ukrainians, the press secretary said.

DENVER, CO- Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed a nationwide lawsuit against Global Medical Response (GMR), American Medical Response (AMR), and AMR’s subsidiaries. This lawsuit is a result, in part, of the wrongful termination of Mr. Ravinder Singh, a Sikh paramedic.
In November of 2020, Mr. Singh was dismissed from AMR after he requested and was denied personal protective equipment (PPE) that would accommodate his Sikh articles of faith, including his turban and beard.
Despite the fact that Mr. Singh satisfied his training requirements, was hired to work for AMR, and provided AMR with documentation about the Sikh articles of faith and his sincere need for an accommodation, AMR still insisted
upon Mr. Singh using an N95 mask as opposed to any other kind of PPE. Ultimately, Mr. Singh was dismissed from his position in violation of his rights under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
The Sikh Coalition first filed a discrimination complaint on Mr. Singh’s behalf with the EEOC in May of 2021.
After an initial investigation, the EEOC found reasonable cause to conclude religious discrimination by GMR and AMR in Mr. Singh’s case and other similar cases across the nation, as well as reasonable cause to conclude disability discrimination by GMR and AMR.
The Sikh Coalition expects this case to move forward in the United States District Court for the District of Colorado in the weeks ahead
SPRINGFIELD, IL- While the Midwest is not subject to the devastation caused by hurricanes, residents can fall prey to hurricane-related fraud attempts by scammers. When tragedies like Hurricane Ian occur, the public pulls together to help those in need. Scammers will leverage natural disasters to steal your money, your personal information, or both. Charity fraud schemes seek donations for organizations that do little or no work, using the money instead for the scammer’s own gain. Disaster and charity fraud can come in many forms, from emails and social media posts, to crowdfunding platforms and cold calls. FBI Springfield offers the following tips to avoid becoming a victim of charity or disaster fraud.
• Do your homework when it comes to donations. Research charity reviews online, state regulators of charities, and charity reports and ratings via the Better
• Don’t believe your caller ID. Scammers often spoof agency phone numbers. It is always best to research the organization’s telephone number and call directly to verify. Do not be pressured or rushed to donate. If so, it may be a scam.
• Do not click on links from sources you don’t know. These could be attempts to download viruses onto your computer or cell phone. Manually type out links instead of clicking on them.
• Be wary of charity names which sound very similar to well-known charities, as well as email addresses which are not consistent with the charity soliciting donations.
• Check the charity’s website URL—most legitimate charity organization websites use .org, not .com.
Government workers are required to carry official identification and show it if requested. Closely scrutinize any ID you see and call the agency directly to confirm a worker’s identity if you are unsure.

Hindus Urge South Dakota Firm To Withdraw Lord Ganesha $940 Cufflinks And Apologize
HiIndia Newsdesk
RENO, NV- Upset Hindus are urging “The World’s Largest Retailer of Cufflinks”, named “Cufflinks” and located in Sioux Falls (South Dakota), to immediately withdraw Hindu deity Ganesha shaped cufflinks, calling it highly inappropriate.
Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that Lord Ganesha was greatly revered in Hinduism and was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to secure the cuffs of dress shirts, misused as a fashion statement, thrown around loosely, etc.
“Cufflinks”; which claims to partner with
Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Hudsons Bay, shop Disney, Star Wars, Marvel; should not be in the business of religious appropriation, sacrilege and belittling sacred Hindu deity. It was deeply trivializing of immensely venerated Lord Ganesha to be flaunted like this; Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated. Rajan Zed emphasized that inappropriate usage of sacred Hindu deities or concepts or symbols or icons for mercantile or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees. He also urged “Cufflinks” to offer a formal apology; besides withdrawing $940 “Ganesha Cufflinks” from its website.
Jaywalking Is Decriminalized In California Under New Law
AB-2147, also known as The Freedom to Walk Act, was first introduced by Assembly member Phil Ting (D- San Francisco).
The bill defines when an officer can stop and cite a pedestrian for jaywalking – specified as only when a reasonably careful person would realize there is an immediate danger of a collision.
“It should not be a criminal offense to safely cross the street,” said Ting. “When expensive tickets and unnecessary confrontations with police impact only certain communities, it’s time to reconsider how we use our law enforcement resources and whether our jaywalking laws really do protect pedestrians.”
Zed was of the view that insensitive handling of faith traditions sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols.
In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as god of wisdom and remover of obstacles and is invoked before the beginning of any major undertaking.
Made in USA, “Ganesha Cufflinks” are claimed to be made with 925 Sterling Silver and intricately hand-painted with enamel. “Cufflinks”, established in 1999, defines itself as “The men’s accessories marketplace” and “Details For The Well Dressed Man”.

furnishing post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to uninsured individuals. The legislation was introduced on Sep 28 which is marked as the World Rabies Day. The legislation would help to reduce costs of rabies vaccine for uninsured Americans. Bera had himself received a regimen of immunoglobulin and rabies shots following a fox bite on the US Capitol grounds in April. Bera said, “After being bit by a rabid fox, I was fortunate to have access to readily available and low-cost vaccines. But for too many Americans, the costs of treatment would break their banks. My legislation would seek to reduce the high costs of treatment for uninsured Americans, ensuring that no one has to choose between receiving treatment or not because of high costs.” Rabies can be prevented by timely vaccines. The costs for patients in the US can be very high, with treatment ranging from $1,200 to $6,500.
WASHINGTON, DC —U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services today awarded nearly $20 million in grants to 66 organizations in 35 states to help prepare lawful permanent residents (LPRs) and those with a clear pathway to lawful permanent residency for naturalization. USCIS focused this year on reaching remote, underserved, and/or isolated communities per Executive Order 14012, Restoring Faith in Our Legal Immigration Systems and Strengthening Integration and Inclusion Efforts for New Americans, and corresponding Interagency Strategy on Promoting Naturalization. The grants were made possible thanks to funding provided by Congress, which doubled the funding available for fiscal year (FY) 2022.
Citizenship and Integration Grants provide funding to organizations that prepare immigrants for naturalization and promote civic integration through increased knowledge of English, U.S. history and civics. In addition to the traditional programs that fund citizenship and English acquisition classes, DHS expanded the FY 2022 grants to include opportunities for creative and innovative approaches to preparing immigrants for naturalization. Grants were also made available to fund regional or statewide hubs: citizenship support networks that build capacity among their affiliates to provide direct services to immigrants.
“We enrich the fabric and future of our nation as we welcome new United States citizens and benefit from their many contributions,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “We are therefore proud to provide these grants to organizations that assist lawful permanent residents on their path to citizenship and equip them to embrace the rights and responsibilities that citizenship involves.”

Amit Shah Announces A Quota In Kashmir Which Is A First For India
Rajouri/Jammu: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today declared at Rajouri in Jammu and Kashmir that the Pahari community will soon get reservation in education and jobs as Scheduled Tribe (ST) — a pre-election promise aimed at widening the BJP’s support base. If implemented, this quota will be the first instance of a linguistic group earning reservation in India. The central government will have to amend the Reservations Act in Parliament for it.
“The GD Sharma commission set up by the government has sent the report and recommended reservation for Gujjar, Bakarwal and Pahari communities. It will be given soon,” Mr Shah said at a rally that marked the start of the BJP’s campaign for elections likely next year.

The court, however, stayed the order till October 13 to enable the ED to file an appeal against bail. New Delhi: Russian hacker Mikhail Shargin allegedly aided cheating by 820 students — much more than the initial estimates — by manipulating the online system in last year’s JEE-Mains, the entrance exam for admission to India’s top engineering colleges such as the IITs.
The CBI said this today in a Delhi court that gave it two-day custody of the 25-year-old.
The exam — taken by over 9 lakh students last September — is held only on control-restricted computers at designated centres. Mikhail Shargin hacked into the system so that students could grant “remote access” to his associates, who then solved the question papers on computers elsewhere, says the probe.
Simply put, “teachers” or “coaches” outside the centres were able to take charge of the students’ computers and solve the questions.

Champions League: Several Challenges ahead for struggling Dortmund
three league defeats are accompanied by an unpleasant debate about the team’s mentality problem, triggered by coach Edin Terzic. “The lack of determination has been following us over the past years,” Terzic complained.
Crucial duels against Sevilla (twice) and national issues against Bayern Munich and Bundesliga leader Union Berlin, therefore, turn into do-or-die tasks as the club’s future seems at stake. Plans to challenge the national leagues’ dominant stag Bayern Munich seem already shattered early in the 2022-2023 season, reports Xinhua.
In the Champions League, a significant upswing is required to help survive a challenging group containing Manchester City next to resilient Sevilla.

An inevitable generational change is also burdening the side, including the expiring contracts of several aged leaders such as Mats Hummels and Marco Reus, who had to quit for Sevilla due to injuries. Next to established forces, super-talent Youssoufa Moukoko is said to consider leaving due to a lack of playing minutes, while midfield conductor Jude Bellingham has become a serious target of potent clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester City, Real Madrid, and Liverpool.

Baboo, an unemployed physical education graduate, won the event in 2 hours 36 minutes 34 seconds, bettering the earlier national record of 2:40.16, which was in the name of Haryana’s Juned Khan who finished second on Tuesday with a time of 2:40.51.

“I hope to make it to India soon,” Roger Federer replied to Virat Kohli’s message. Former India men’s cricket team captain Virat Kohli had shared a heartfelt video for Roger Federer to congratulate him on a phenomenal career.
“Hello Roger, it’s a great honour for me to be able to send this video across for you congratulating you on a phenomenal career that has given us so many beautiful moments and memories,” Kohli said in an official video message posted by ATP.
A person familiar with the project told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Ukraine is being added to the Spain-Portugal bid. The bid, which has been in the works for more than three years, is scheduled to be announced on Wednesday at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement has not yet been made public. Ukrainian soccer federation president Andriy Pavelko confirmed to the AP he will go to Switzerland for the announcement, but he declined to confirm details of the project. The addition of Ukraine to the European bid was first reported by British newspaper The Times of London. ‘I don’t know who that guy is [to replace Jasprit Bumrah].’: Rohit Sharma
“We need to look at our bowling to see what more options we can find for in powerplay, middle overs and death overs. We are still working towards it. Guys need lot more clarity and it’s my job to make it happen, “ Rohit said.
HiIndia Newsdesk
Rohit Sharma has said that India haven’t yet identified who will replace Jasprit Bumrah in the playing XI in Australia in the T20 world cup.
“Bumrah is out of world cup; that will be a big miss. We need to find a guy, I don’t know who that guy is yet, there are a few guys.. we will make that call in Australia,” Rohit said at the end of the third T20 against Australia. He also jested a bit about Suryakumar Yadav’s form. “There are lots of areas of concern. To start with Surya’s form is a bit of concern (laughs!)” At the end of the second T20 he had joked that he might not play Suryakumar until the 23rd against Pakistan in the World Cup opener to preserve his form.
“We need to look at our bowling to see what more options we can find for in powerplay, middle overs and death overs. We are still working towards it. Guys need lot more clarity and it’s my job to make it happen. It’s a work in progress.” India leave for Australia and will be based in Perth at the
start. Rohit gave reasons why they chose that particular city as their base.
“Lot of guys haven’t been to Australia. That’s why we are going there early and also play on bouncy conditions in Perth to see what we do out there. Only 7-8 are of squad have gone to Australia before. We have organised couple of practice games in Western Australia plus there are two ICC practice games.”
Indian bowling has been a concern. No one has really claimed the role of a death-overs specialist. Harshal Patel has leaked runs; so has Arshdeep Singh, and tonight at the third T20 even Deepak Chahar went for runs in his last two overs. Mohammad Shami couldn’t play a game after he picked up Covid-19 virus. Umesh Yadav has had a couple of games.
Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has picked Mohammad Shami as the replacement of Bumrah. “Since we already have Bhuvneshwar Kumar and he does a similar job as Deepak Chahar, we need someone with pace, who can get good bounce, and I will go with Mohammad Shami,” he told.

It is well known that aerobic exercise, such as running and cycling, can help you live longer, but less has been known about the effect of lifting weights on longevity. Now, results from a new study suggest that adding weightlifting to your exercise regime, even in later life, is a sensible thing to do if you want to avoid an early death.
The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, aimed to find out if lifting weights was linked to a lower risk of death from any cause, either on its own or alongside moderate to vigorous exercise.
Moderate-intensity exercise was described as “activity where you worked up a light sweat or increased your breathing and heart rate to moderately high levels”, and vigorous activity as “activity strenuous enough to work up a sweat or increase your breathing and heart rate to very high levels”.
The researchers, led by a team from the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, analysed data on just under 100,000 men and women from ten cancer centres in the US. The participants had an average age of 71 and an average body-mass index of 27.8 (overweight). They followed the group for just shy of a decade, monitoring deaths from any cause, including heart disease.
Around a quarter of people (23%) reported lifting weights, with 16% doing so regularly – between one and six times a week. And around a third (32%) either met or did more than the recommended amount of aerobic exercise.
Weightlifting and aerobic exercise were independently linked with a lower risk of premature death from any cause, except cancer.
For adults who reported no aerobic activity, any weightlifting was associated with a 9%-22% lower risk of early death, depending on how often they lifted weights. For those who did not lift weights, but did any level of aerobic exercise, this was 24%-34%.
However, the lowest risk was seen in those who did both weightlifting and aerobic exercise. For example, lifting weights once or twice a week and doing at least the recommended amount of aerobic exercise, had a 41%-47% lower risk of premature death. The study also found that women
To ensure good health, one needs to exercise discipline when it comes to their meal timings and habits. Improper digestion can lead to a host of health issues, which is why knowing what to eat and consuming the food mindfully — while also being aware of just how much to eat — is crucial.
According to Nidhi Sharma, the founder at Half Life to Health — an online nutrition and fitness platform — it is also important to know some dos and don’ts before and after a meal so that one can meet their nutrition goals.
“It is common to make mistakes, and one may not realise they are actually unhealthy practices. Many people have a set of adopted practices with respect to food, but now is the right time to unlearn those unhealthy practices,” she says.

activity.

benefited more from weightlifting than men. Explanation for the findings
Possible explanations for these findings are that weightlifting may have similar beneficial effects to aerobic exercise. For example, reducing heart disease risk factors by improving blood pressure and blood lipid (cholesterol and triglycerides) profile.
Other recent research that combined studies on muscle strengthening and health outcomes found similar results, but also found a reduced risk of cancer, overall. Perhaps this new study did not find effects for cancer as they were targeting a population already at higher cancer risk, given the participants were part of a cancer screening programme. The best effects were again seen from combining aerobic and strengthening
Eight things you must never do after having a meal
Measuring exercise by asking participants to recall how much they exercised over the past year, for example, is a good option for large observational studies of this type, but it can mean over or under-reporting may influence the findings. A study that used digital devices, such as smartwatches, to measure actual activity would provide more accurate results.
People in this study were also recruited as part of a cancer screening trial, so the study would probably recruit people with an interest in health, which means they might be more physically active as a result. This means that in the general population, the risk of earlier death related to not exercising or lifting weights is possibly even higher.
The findings from this study, and others, show that lifting weights, either on their own or with aerobic exercise, can help reduce the risk of early death. Lifting weights should be a lifelong commitment. It is never too late to start, and the results could be a healthier, longer life.
vomiting, causing acid reflux.
Ň
Avoid sleeping or taking a nap: The urge to lie down after a meal is quite common. This causes the digestive juices to rise up, causing severe heartburns; a person may wake up feeling full after a meal.
Ň
Avoid drinking a lot of water: It slows down the digestion process. Drinking excess water dilutes the stomach acid and impairs digestion. Most Indian meals contain enough fluid in the form of gravies, dals, sambhar, chaas, etc. The salads have high water content, too.
Ň
Avoid taking a shower immediately:
Post meal, blood surrounds the stomach to help with digestion and when you take a bath, the body temperature changes. To bring the body back to its original temperature the blood diverts to the skin surface
from the stomach surface leading to impaired and slow digestion.
Ň Avoid exercising: Vigorous exercise right after a meal can disrupt the digestion process. It may cause nausea, stomach/abdominal pain and lead to
Avoid activities that involve bending forward; it can cause acid reflux.
Ň
Avoid eating fruits post a meal, as it can reduce the absorption of nutrients from the fruit.
Ň
Avoid drinking tea/coffee: They contain some phenolic compounds that interfere with absorption of certain nutrients like iron from the meal.
Ň
Avoid alcohol consumption or smoking: Though they are harmful for the body, having them after a meal increases health risks.
How much coffee is too much?
Coffee contains caffeine, and this provides a boost which perks you
up. Unfortunately, the boost is short-lived. An intake of around 400mg of caffeine is safe. This is usually the amount found in four cups of coffee.
If you are sensitive to caffeine or take too much, it can manifest as anxiety, irritability, inability to sleep, restlessness, tremors and palpitations. There are other ways to get a sustained boost, like eating fruit: oranges, bananas or else a handful of nuts.
You might also benefit from standing up, taking a few deep breaths, and doing light stretches.
Feet burn
Vitamin B12 is required to keep the nerves healthy. A nonvegetarian diet with adequate amounts of meat, fish and eggs usually provides sufficient B12. Vegetarians can get it from dairy products. Vitamin B12 binds to an R factor in the stomach for absorption. As age advances (especially after 50 years), the stomach cells producing the R factor may reduce. This can also occur with autoimmune thyroid disease, regular antacid use and some medications. Vitamin B12 can be supplemented with pills or injections.
Processed food
Unfortunately, UPF (ultra processed food) is widely advertised. They are tasty and habit-forming. Chips, candy and cola drinks are the first line offenders. They provide empty calories without nutrients such as protein or fibre. Regular and excessive consumption of these foods leads to obesity and its complications — heart disease and colon cancer.

Wedding shopping: Tips to consider
Love For The Sari Through Inventive Renditions Of The Drape
With the onset of festivities & the much-awaited wedding season, it’s time we rev up our festive wardrobes.
Search for trending designs online
One of the most important steps you should consider before hitting the market is research. Wedding trends keep changing every passing day and it is important that you do not pick outfits that wouldn’t match the trend and ongoing wedding themes. Checking out various designs, colours, and fabric choice is important to avoid confusion while finally purchasing.
Set a budget
Wedding outfits are expensive, so be careful of scams and overcharging. Set up an affordable budget after thoroughly researching. Every wedding outfit differs in terms of quality and price. Creating a budget will help you not to overspend on your wedding attire.
Allot enough time Shopping requires time and patience, especially if you are shopping for a wedding. But, always begin your shopping spree at least 3-6 months prior to the wedding day. Insufficient time, and last moment shopping trips could create problems like alteration, out-oftrend outfits and such.

Lehengas and gowns sure are great, but the sari remains a classic. Generations come and go, yet the allure of the six yard drape stays solid, unperturbed by changing fads or performative gimmicks.
Whilst the core of a sari is consistent in the ways we drape & style the same, certain modifications in the making are a welcome step by the younger lot. Organza, which was big in the 80s is now back with a bang. Gota & zardosi still retain their positions as fan favourites whilst the good old Banarasi silk trumps them all.
An offering by the House of Masaba, this black crinkle gota sari worn by Mouni Roy is a pre-pleated variant. The pleated fall of the sari originating from the navel, features the house’s iconic ethnic print repeat. Just reiterating here, nobody does gold foil better than Masaba. Seems like we’ve found the ideal sari for Durga Pujo.
Spotlight on environmentalist Dia Mirza in a peach coloured, handwoven Ekaya Banaras silk sari. Embossed with delicately-sized rose repeats, the blush hued drape is as elegant as it is timeless. A simple styling & a borrowed heirloom necklace – that’s the not-so-secret recipe to embody the grace of a silk masterpiece.
Styled by Radhika Mehra, this emerald green sari by Picchika is characterized by the peculiar, hand painted white anthuriums & a gota enhancement. The sheerness of the silk organza & its evident lightness is why this sari should be on your radar for the festivities. Prioritize comfort folks.
