Probe reaches civic office, police say no structural tests done during bridge repair
The probe into the suspension bridge collapse that killed 141 people reached the doorstep of the Morbi municipality Wednesday as its Chief Officer Sandipsinh Zala was questioned by the police even as investigators said that the private contractors engaged by Oreva Group did not conduct any “scientific assessment of structural stability” of the bridge during its repair and renovation. Zala, the CO, was summoned by P A Zala, Morbi’s Deputy Superintendent of Police who is the investigating officer of the case. The CO was questioned for four hours and was asked to verify documentation related to the bridge contract.

The Federal Reserve said it was raising its key interest rate by 0.75 percentage points, lifting it to its highest rate since early 2008.
The bank hopes pushing up borrowing costs will cool the economy and bring down price inflation.
But critics are worried the moves could trigger a serious downturn. The latest increase takes the bank’s benchmark lending rate to 3.75% - 4%, a range that is the highest since January 2008. Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell warned that rates were likely to move up again, saying that speculation that the bank might pause was “premature”.

US midterms: Biden warns election denial is ‘path to chaos’

US President Joe Biden has warned any candidates who refuse to accept defeat in next week’s midterm elections could set the nation on “the path to chaos”.
He also urged Americans to unite in opposition to “political violence” in the vote on 8 November.
Mr Biden, a Democrat, said former President Donald Trump and his supporters were peddling “lies of conspiracy and malice”.
in the balance in next week’s elections.
Most forecasts suggest Republicans will win control of the House of Representatives, while the Senate could go either way.
Mr Biden spoke in nationally televised remarks on Wednesday evening at Washington DC’s Union Stationjust a few streets from where Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol last year in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Indian-Americans secret weapon for economic growth: Rep Jim Himes
New York, Nov 2 (IANS) IndianAmericans are a “secret weapon for economic growth”, Congressman Jim Himes said showering praises on the thriving community, which is the highest-earning ethnic group in the US. With a population of more than 4.5 million, Indian-Americans make up 1.4 per cent of the US population and are the largest lot of South Asian Americans. “You are a secret weapon for economic growth... the future of US innovations,”
US remained ‘watchful’: US official on developments along India’s border with China
Washington: The White House on Wednesday said it deleted a tweet after Twitter users flagged the post as lacking context. In its tweet, the White House said that it was “thanks to President Biden’s leadership” that US pensioners had received the biggest benefit hike in 10 years. But a note by Twitter generated by users argued that the boost was in fact due to an automatic adjustment triggered by high inflation -- a mechanism that has existed since 1972. The note was part of Twitter’s Birdwatch program, which adds comments to relevant posts if enough people with a wide range of opinions find them “helpful.”
The US remained “watchful” over developments along India’s frontier with China as it cannot take its eyes off the regional security issues, a senior American official said on Wednesday in the backdrop of the over 29-month border standoff in eastern Ladakh that has significantly frayed ties between the two neighbours.
Rear Admiral Michael L Baker, the Defence Attache at the US Embassy, also said that it is important to be “mindful” of Chinese actions in the South China Sea as well, even as he described IndiaUS defence ties as the “cornerstone” of the overall bilateral relations.
“I cannot speak in this forum on a real, detailed level about what we may or may not observe. But I will tell you that it is certainly an important area for us. We do remain watchful,” he told a small group of reporters.
His remarks came when asked
We do work closely with India to exchange our views on this area to make sure that we have a clear understanding of what we think may be happening: Washington
whether the US has been tracking the developments along India’s border with China and how the US views the lingering conflict playing out in the coming months.
“We do work closely with India to exchange our views on this area to make sure that we have a clear understanding of what we think may be happening and I think it is a space that, for both India and the United States, we are going to remain watchful over time. We cannot take our eye off the regional security issues,” he said.
Indian-Americans are a “secret weapon for economic growth”, Congressman Jim Himes said showering praises on the thriving community, which is the highestearning ethnic group in the US.
Rep Himes, a Democrat representing the 4th district of Connecticut, said during an interactive session with members of Global Organization of People of Indian Origin-Connecticut Chapter (GOPIO-CT).
Washington, Nov 3 (IANS) Johns Hopkins University in the US city of Baltimore has issued a safety warning amid an increase in serious crimes in its premises.
From October 6 to 27 alone, there were six armed robberies reported on and around its Homewood campus, as well as one near its Peabody campus -- two of which were abduction attempts, a Fox News report said citing Branville Bard, the university’s vice president for public safety.
“These acts of violence tear at the fabric of our community, and the university is working to support the victims,” Bard said in a letter to students and staff. The vice president said members of Johns Hopkins community fell victim to “two especially brazen and disturbing incidents” last week, Xinhua news agency reported. On October 24, one of those victims was walking near the Homewood campus in the 100 block of West University Parkway when three suspects “armed with handguns forced the affiliate into their vehicle”, drove to “multiple ATMs, and forced the victim to make cash withdrawals before releasing the victim”, the Fox News report said.

North Korea launches 25 missiles, triggering air-raid alarm in South
The South Korean military’s chief director of operations, called the launch ‘a highly unusual and intolerable act’
missiles in a single day - including one that landed near South Korea’s territorial waters.
Seoul responded by firing three missiles of its own.
North Korea’s multiple launches comes as the US and South Korea are staging their largest-ever joint air drills, which Pyongyang has strongly criticised as “aggressive and provocative”.
The latest launch on Thursday morning led the Japanese government to issue a rare emergency alert to residents in some of its northern regions, telling them to stay indoors.
Rishi Sunak will attend COP27 after all
North Korea has fired at least one long-range and two shortrange ballistic missiles, said South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida says one may have been an intercontinental ballistic missile. It comes after Pyongyang on Wednesday launched its most
Tokyo initially said the missile had flown over Japan, but Defence Minister Yasukazu Hamada later said it did “not cross the Japanese archipelago, but disappeared over the Sea of Japan”.
PM Kishida later condemned North Korea’s “repeated missile launches”, calling them an “outrage”.
Elon Musk Plans to Cut Half of Twitter Jobs to Slash Costs: Report
Elon Musk plans to eliminate about 3,700 jobs at Twitter Inc., or half of the social media company’s workforce, in a bid to drive down costs following his $44 billion acquisition, according to people with knowledge of the matter.
Twitter’s new owner aims to inform affected staffers Friday, said the people, who requested anonymity discussing non-public plans. Musk also intends
to reverse the company’s existing work-from-anywhere policy, asking remaining employees to report to offices -- though some exceptions could be made, the people said.
Musk and a team of advisers have been weighing a range of scenarios for job cuts and other policy changes at San Francisco-based Twitter, the people said, adding that the terms of the headcount reduction could still change.

India’s new visa centre opens in London to address delays

The visa centre, which was inaugurated on Tuesday by Indian High Commissioner to the UK, Vikram Doraiswami, will be operated by VFS Global -- the outsourcing and technology services provider for governments and diplomatic missions.
Rishi Sunak confirmed on Wednesday that he will attend the Cop27 climate change conference next week in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh after all after earlier saying he wanted to stay at home and focus on the financial statement due to be made on November 17.
Sunak tweeted: “There is no longterm prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables. “That is why I will attend Cop27 next week: to deliver on Glasgow’s legacy of building a secure and sustainable future.”
The Prime Minister’s official spokeswoman explained: “He has always recognised the importance of this summit and indeed on tackling climate change more generally. We wanted to make sure we were making good progress on the Government’s domestic agenda and the Autumn Statement in particular.
India abstains on Russiasponsored UNSC resolution involving Ukraine
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s Opposition leader, extended his lead on Wednesday morning in Israel’s fifth election since 2019, but the final result remained unclear because of the uncertain fate of three small parties that could block him from power. With roughly two-thirds of the vote counted, Israel’s three main broadcasters projected that Netanyahu’s party, Likud, would finish first and that his Right-wing bloc was likely to be able to form a majority in parliament. If the results hold, they would propel Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving Prime Minister, back to power with an even bigger majority than exit polls predicted late on Tuesday. But such projections have been wrong before, particularly in tight races, most recently in the previous election in March 2021, when they exaggerated Netanyahu’s eventual tally.
New Delhi: (IANS) A new Indian visa centre has been opened in Marylebone, central London, for swift processing of applications, along with other initiatives like doorstep service and document
“The number of appointments we have been able to do has increased greatly... to about 40,000 per month, thanks to our partners at VFS,” Doraiswami said in a video message shared on Twitter. He added that opening of a new visa processing facility “should be able to facilitate greater access and greater ease of applications”.
Canada reveals immigration plan amid critical labour shortage
Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Sean Fraser on Tuesday released Canada’s 20232025 Immigration Levels Plan which embraces immigration as a strategy to help businesses find workers and to attract the skills required in key sectors, reports Xinhua news agency.
United Nations, Nov 3 (IANS) India has abstained on yet another resolution involving Ukraine, this time a motion sponsored by Russia at the UN Security Council. Only China voted with Russia on Wednesday on the resolution calling for an inquiry into what Moscow alleged was a joint biowarfare programme run by the US and Ukraine in violation of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC).
All the 10 non-permanent members abstained and the only negative votes from the US, Britain and France did not amount to vetoes because the resolution automatically failed without getting the minimum of nine votes.
Ottawa: (IANS) The Canadian government has revealed its immigration plan to welcome half a million immigrants each year by 2025 to tackle the problem of labour shortage.
According to a statement from the Immigration Ministry, the Canadian economy is now facing critical labour market shortages causing uncertainty for Canadian businesses and workers.
Explaining India’s abstention, Counsellor Asokan Amarnath cited the absence of “an effective, universal and non-discriminatory verification mechanism” for implementing the provisions of the BWC.

NYC Mayor honours Indian-American organisations
Indian from Gujarat shot dead in Uganda, cop detained
During the recent Diwali celebrations at his Gracie Mansion, Mayor Adams awarded the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), led by Dr Thomas Abraham, for mobilising the Indian community and working for the common good of the society in the New York area.
Federation of Indian Associations of NY, NJ, CT, Indiaspora, Grammy Award Winner Falu Shah and Tulsi Mandir of Richmond Hill Queens and Lion Romeo Hitlall of the Indo-Caribbean community, were also honoured.
“I looked at during the 70s when we saw such a large wave of those
who came from India, moved to Queens, wanted to believe in American dream and you worked hard and opened small businesses, and you sent your children to school to learn different skills so they can be deputy mayors and doctors and leaders of agencies and help our city move forward, fortifying the strength of our city,” said Mayor Adams, addressing a gathering of over 1,100 people
Bringing cheer to the Indian-American community, Adams had recently announced Diwali as a public holiday in New York City beginning in 2023.

Canada exploiting Indian students for ‘cheap labour’: Report
New York, Oct 31 (IANS) Supporters of the Congress have held a march here mirroring the “Bharat Jodo Yatra” organised in India by party leader Rahul Gandhi. The participants in the programme billed as “Unity Walk in New York” marched on Sunday from Times Square to the Gandhi statue in Union Square, according to the Indian Overseas Congress USA which organised the event.
IOC Chairman Sam Pitroda flagged off the march with a call to adhere to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, the organisation said.
About 300 people participated in the march which was “inspired” by Rahul Gandhi’s “yatra” and aims to promote “unity and peace in India and the subcontinent”, the organisers said.
Toronto,: (IANS) In order to address acute labour shortage, Canada plans to welcome a record 500,000 new permanent residents in 2025, the government said while announcing the Immigration Levels Plan for 2023-2025 on Tuesday.
The North American nation increased its 2023 immigration target to 465,000 and its 2024 target to 485,000, up 4 per cent and 7.5 per cent, respectively.
Canada’s immigration goals include growing the economy, reuniting families,

According to the new plan, there will be 82,880 Express Entry landings in 2023, 109,020 in 2024 and 114,000 in 2025.
The PNP will remain Canada’s leading admissions program for economic class immigrants with 105,500 PNP landings in 2023, 110,000 in 2024 and 117,500 in 2025. Suella Braverman calls migrant crisis an ‘invasion’, faces heat
London,: (IANS) Indian-origin Suella Braverman, already under fire over her reappointment as the UK Home Secretary, has sparked off another outrage by comparing migrant crisis in the country to “invasion”.
Braverman, who was forced to resign from her position under former Prime Minister Liz Truss for breaching the
ministerial code of conduct, said on Monday that migrants have launched an “invasion on our southern coast”.
“Let’s stop pretending that they are all refugees in distress,” she said while responding to questions in the House of Commons amid concerns about conditions at the Manston processing site in Kent.
Manston, a former military base in Kent, opened as a processing centre in February this year, for the growing number of migrants reaching the UK in small boats.
New Delhi: (IANS) Some Indian students in Canada are accusing the country of using them as a cheap source of labour and discarding them once they’re no longer needed, a media report said on Tuesday.
Amid labour shortage and high unemployment rate, which fell to 5.2 per cent this September, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced a new temporary measure aimed at reducing severe labour shortages in Canada, a Bloomberg report said.
According to the report, PM Justin Trudeau’s government introduced the permit extension move to over 5,00,000 international students already in Canada to potentially work more hours, and stay for 18 months after graduation to seek employment.
However, after more than a year, some of these permanent-resident hopefuls have been left without status to work or remain in the country. “I’m basically sitting at home and living off of my savings... Canada should appreciate foreign students more, not just use them as a form of cheap labour,” Daniel D’Souza, an accountant and former student at Seneca College near Toronto, told Bloomberg.

Morbi bridge collapse 141 DIED
Morbi (Gujarat) (IANS) The death toll due to the collapse of a suspension bridge in Gujarat’s Morbi has increased to 141 as of Monday morning, a top police official confirmed.
The toll was confirmed to the media by Rajkot Range Inspector General of Police Ashok Yadav. However, the toll according to the Minister of State
for Home Harsh Sanghavi is 132, while two persons remain unaccounted for.
He also said that when the two missing persons are located, the search and rescue operations will be over.
As of Monday morning, the Morbi government hospital has released a list of 99 deceased, but has not mentioned the age of the victims.
The tragedy took place on Sunday evening when about 400 people were on the suspension bridge on the Machhu river.
A criminal complaint against the cable bridge contractor and manager has been lodged while the police have started a probe into the incident.
US President Joe Biden on Monday extended his deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the bridge collapse tragedy in Morbi, Gujarat, on Sunday in which 141 people were killed.
“Today, our hearts are with India. Jill and I send our deepest condolences to the families who lost loved ones during the bridge collapse, and join the people of Gujarat in mourning the loss of too many lives cut short. “The United States and India are indispensable partners, with deep bonds between our citizens. In this difficult hour, we will continue to stand with and support the Indian people,” Biden said in a statement issued by the White House.
Rajpipla (Gujarat): (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pained by the tragedy of the Morbi bridge collapse in which 141 people were killed.
He was here to pay floral tributes to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birth anniversary at the Statue of Unity on Monday. “My heart goes out to the Morbi bridge collapse victims. In my life I have rarely experienced such pain.
I am at Ekta Nagar but my heart and mind are with the victims,” Modi said while addressing a gathering in Ekta Nagar. He added, “On one hand my heart is in pain and on the other hand I have to discharge my duty.
I pay condolences to those who have lost their lives in the accident and share grief and sorrows of the families.”
Nine Arrested for Morbi Bridge Collapse; FIR Cites ‘Callous Approach’ by Firm That Carried Repair
New Delhi: A day after over 141 people died in a bridge collapse in Gujarat’s Morbi, nine people have been arrested, and a case has been filed against firms tasked with the maintenance and operation of the British-era structure.
Questions have been raised over why Oreva Group, a company which once described itself as the “world’s largest clock manufacturing company”before it also began making lighting products, batteryoperated bikes, home appliances and TV sets - was given responsibility for maintaining a bridge.
Concerns have also been raised about whether safety checks were carried out before the bridge was reopened.
* The company was bound by its contract to keep the bridge shut for at least eight to 12 months for maintenance and repairs. It was a “seriously irresponsible and careless gesture” to open the bridge last week, the police said in an FIR.
* Tickets were sold for ₹ 12 to ₹ 17 on Sunday to more than 400 people, officials said, which resulted in overcrowding on the “hanging bridge”, causing the old metal cables to give way. Gujarat’s forensics laboratory has also found that the bridge collapsed under the weight of the huge rush of people, sources have said.
* Some of the old cables of the bridge in Morbi weren’t changed during the seven-month renovation by the Oreva Group, sources added.
* Nine people have been arrested in the case so far. Among them are managers of Oreva, ticket collectors, bridge repair contractors and three security guards whose job was to control the crowds.
* People fell on top of each other after the bridge snapped. Videos showed many desperately clinging to the remains of the bridge while some were seen swimming to safety. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has declared a statewide mourning on Wednesday for the victims of the bridge collapse.
* At least 47 children, several women and elderly are among the dead, according to the officials.
Among the arrested are managers of Oreva, the company that renovated the bridge, ticket collectors, bridge repair contractors and three security guards whose job was to control the crowds. According to NDTV, none of the top bosses of the firm has been arrested so far, even as the firm faces multiple allegations of violating requisite safety norms.
“We won’t let the guilty get away, we won’t spare anyone,” the news channel quoted Morbi police chief Ashok Yadav as saying hours before the arrest. Video footage emerged of the moments before Sunday evening’s deadly collapse, showing the bridge snapping in a few seconds, taking down scores of visitors seen walking on the swaying British-era structure which reopened five days ago after extensive repair but sans a fitness certificate. The bridge was reopened after a private inaugural event and was yet to receive the municipality’s “fitness certificate,” a civic official said.

No actress should attempt dancing to ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aa Jaa’, says Huma
Bollywood actress Huma Qureshi, who will soon be seen in the upcoming streaming movie ‘Monica, O My Darling’, has said that no actress should attempt to dance to the tune of the iconic song ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aa Jaa’ as a mark of respect for veteran dancer-actress Helen. The actress was speaking at the trailer launch of ‘Monica, O My Darling’ in Mumbai. In the trailer, the audience can hear ‘Piya Tu Ab Toh Aa Jaa’ playing in the background as it flawlessly ties the events in the trailer as it slowly gives way to the title ‘Monica, O My Darling’, which is an expression taken from the track. When asked about the usage of the retro song in the film and the legalities involved, Huma said that the film’s team had already
Waiting for the right script
sorted out the necessary legal proceedings. She further mentioned that since it’s a special track and carries the massive weight of the history of mainstream Hindi cinema no actress should attempt to dance to the song for the camera as it solely belongs to Helen (screen writer Salim Khan’s wife and Salman Khan’s stepmother).
“Not just me but no other actress should attempt the song for the camera as it’s an iconic track belonging to Helen ji and we must give due respect to her craft and her performance in the song which has swayed generations.”
The track in question was composed by music director R.D. Burman for the film ‘Caravan’ which was directed by Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s uncle, Nasir Hussain.
Eid 2024 is blocked
It appears that Vidya Balan’s dream of playing the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi won’t come true. The web series, backed by the actor’s producer-husband Siddharth Roy Kapur and based on the book, Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister, has apparently been shelved. Earlier this year, while promoting Jalsa, Vidya was asked whether her project on Mrs Gandhi, announced four years ago, was still happening. Back then, she had said, “I’d hope so. I’m hoping to be able to share good news very soon. I’ll leave it at that.”
Over a year since Shershaah’s release, there was talk of Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani teaming up on screen again. The couple, who began dating during the making of the biopic on Kargil martyr, Captain Vikram Batra, had reportedly liked a unique rom-com on soul transfers. However, the film, tentatively titled Adal Badal, is still in the scripting stages. Talk in the trade is that only after they hear the narration, will Sidharth and Kiara take a call.
Prabhas and Deepika Padukone’s first film together, Project K has been generating curiosity since its announcement. Nag Ashwin’s directorial venture, set in the time of World War III, also sees Amitabh Bachchan playing an immortal character inspired by Ashwatthama of the Mahabharata. News is that while filming is expected to be wrapped up by early next year, the makers are planning to release it around Eid 2024. Considering that it is a futuristic thriller, it is VFX-heavy. So, after wrapping up the shoot, Nag and his team will dedicate an entire year to VFX and post-production. What makes the release date significant is that the weekend has quite a few holidays including Ambedkar Jayanti, Tamil New Year, and Ram Navami. Given the high stakes, the makers don’t want to take any chances in making the most at the box office.

Audiences should call out bad films, says Kamal Haasan
Chennai: (IANS) Stating that fans had a great responsibility, actor Kamal Haasan said that they must make it a point to call good films good and bad films bad.
Speaking at the audio launch event of director Prabhu Solomon’s ‘Sembi’, featuring Kovai Sarala and Ashwin in the titular roles, Kamal Haasan said: “During those days while seeking a chance, I would carry a photo album with my pics from the film ‘16 Vayadhinile’.
“I would keep showing it to people saying, ‘I am acting in this film as its hero’. Some would have good words to say. There were others who would say, ‘Don’t you feel ashamed carrying a book in which you have a picture of yourself in a loin cloth?’ I remember all those words today when one of the speakers here praised me saying I attend the audio launches of both big and small films.”
“One cannot decide which is a big film or a small film from here,” he said and then pointing to the audience, he added: “They are the ones who decide.”
“If we are talking about ‘16 Vayathinile’, remembering it after almost 40 years after it was made, then that is what is a big film. There are times when we struggle to remember the name of a film, saying, ‘What was that film that was made for so many crores?’ That is a small film,” he explained. Stating that he had watched ‘Sembi’, Kamal Haasan called it a good film.
“The core point the film looks to make is good. I have seen this film. Our silence is the biggest danger. When you don’t question people committing mistakes as to why they are doing so, the mistakes will continue. This film says that and that is why I like this film. It reminds us all that we have a duty.”
Sharad Kelkar Was Offered Shivaji Maharaj Roles After Tanhaji
Sharad Kelkar is now gearing up for the historical drama ‘Har Har Mahadev’ that sees him in the role of braveheart Maratha, Baji Prabhu Deshpande, the commander of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The movie hits theatres on October 25 in 5 languages.
“A lot of films have been made on Indian history by different directors. But I think there was only one film that we made in the last few years based on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s era. And when we were planning the film Har Har Mahadev, we realised that our primary language is Marathi and our budgets are so restricted, we thought that it won’t be justice to Chhatrapati Shivaji’s character if we make a small film about him. Not just content, the script or the story, we wanted to show the grandness of our Maharaja.
So, we designed the film in such a manner that it should look as big as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s persona.
We have tried our best and that is why we are releasing this film in 5 different languages – Marathi, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada so that everybody should know about Shivaji Maharaj and his stories,” said Sharad.

Hindus Seek Apology From Taylor Swift For Trivializing Their Revered Doctrine Of “Karma”
RENO, NV- Hindu devotees, upset about Taylor Swift’s new song “Karma”, are seeking apology from her for trivializing their serious and ancient religious doctrine of karma, calling it highly inappropriate.
Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada today, said that genuine seekers and devotees took the concept of karma very seriously; but Swift irreverently trivialized it for her mercantile or self-serving agenda; handling it frivolously; and equating karma with a boyfriend, cat purring on the lap, guy on the screen, breeze in hair, etc.; and included a lot of cursing in the “Karma” song.
Doctrine of karma had been pervasive in Hindu thought for thousands of years and found expression in ancient Hindu scriptures like BrhadaranyakaChandogya- Shvetashvatara and other Upanishads, Bhagavad-Gita, Puranas, Dharmasastra, Shatapatha Brahmana;
and various sages delved into it. But Swift handled it very flippantly without any regard to the feelings of devotees; Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated.
We welcome Swift’s belief in karma, which seems like having a colossal place
in Swift’s cosmos; but she should have handled the concept more appropriately, responsibly and thoughtfully; giving due respect to the emotions of Hindus spread worldwide, who take karma very seriously. Even Lord Krishna in ancient Bhagavad-Gita talks about
Sikh Religious Society Celebrated Diwali Festival At Palatine Gurudwara
karma yoga, the active path of selfless service; Rajan Zed emphasizes. Singerssongwriters should not be in the business of trivializing serious spiritual concepts. Insensitive handling of faith traditions sometimes resulted in pillaging serious spiritual doctrines and revered symbols, and thus hurting the devotees; Zed noted. Rajan Zed pointed out that Hindus were for free artistic expression and speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith was something sacred and attempts at trivializing it displayed callousness towards the feelings of adherents. Lyrics of “Karma” include: “karma is my boyfriend”, “karma is the breeze in my hair on the weekend”, “karma is a cat purring in my lap…flexing like a goddamn acrobat”, “karma is the guy on the screen”, etc.

Indian American Lawmaker Slams Seattle Police For Not Probing Repeated Attacks Against Her
SEATTLE, WA- An Indian American lawmaker is calling out the Seattle Police Department for purportedly failing to investigate her report about an unidentified man who allegedly threw plastic bags filled with human excrement onto her property.
Kshama Sawant, a 49-year-old member of the Socialist Alternative party and the Seattle City Council since 2014, reported the incident after the suspect repeatedly threw the bags of feces in her yard starting this month – an attack she believes is potentially “politically motivated,” according to reports. Sawant’s husband claimed to have reported the man to the police after the fourth incident on Oct. 8. Instead of launching an investigation, they reportedly told him, “What do you expect us to do?”
Seattle police also did not put a police detail outside Sawant’s home for protection. “As a socialist City Council member who has participated in Black Lives Matter protests, I am being told that my case of six threatening incidents involving human excrement doesn’t merit even a serious investigation, let alone protection,” the City Council member, who is also an activist and an organizer, wrote to Mayor Bruce Harrell, Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz and the City Council.
The incident happened six times near the Leschi neighborhood, with the most recent incident on Oct. 13, according to reports. Although authorities opened an investigation on that day, Sawant told that the Seattle Police Department did not pursue the case further.

Largest, Tallest Sri Venkateswara Temple Unveiled In Cary, NC
HiIndia Newsdesk
CARY, NC- More than two years ago, leaders of the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Cary commenced construction of an ornate religious tower that, when completed, would serve as a “royal gateway” to God and welcome worshipers and members of the Hindu community to the temple grounds.
This week, the 87-foot Tower of Unity and Prosperity was adorned with threads of bright yellow marigold flowers as elected officials and community members gathered to commemorate the tower’s completion, a milestone for the roughly decade-old temple and the Triangle’s fast-growing Hindu community.
The tower, the largest of its kind in the country, is one of the final pieces of the religious complex and perhaps the most important.
Rising above temple grounds, these towers, referred to in India as gopurams, serve as gateways through which worshipers enter the temple.
Walking through a gopuram, temple leaders explained, devotees leave their
worldly problems behind and immerse themselves into their relationship with God.
Addressing members of the community Monday afternoon, Gov. Roy Cooper thanked temple leaders for inviting him to inaugurate the religious tower, and said he was thrilled to attend the tower’s unveiling on a particularly auspicious day, Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.

Chhath Pooja Celebrated By Indian-Americans Across The USA
NEW YORK, NY- Hundreds of Indian Americans worshipped the Sun God on Sunday evening and Monday night at several places in the country, ranging from the Potomac river in a suburb of this city and Query Lake front in Fremont, to a makeshift pond in Connecticut and Donaldson Park in New Jersey.
In New Jersey, India’s Consul General in New York Randhir Jaiswal and his spouse Dr. Abha Jaiswal joined the

Organised by the Bihar and Jharkhand Association of North America and Bihar Foundation, one of the largest Chhath celebrations in the US saw the participation of families of top corporate leaders.
In his brief remarks, Jaiswal highlighted the significance of the diaspora community in celebrating Indian festivals thousands of miles away from the country of their origin.

NEW YORK, NY— Even as New York City’s public school enrollment dipped last year, its number of homeless students grew by thousands, according to a new study.
Homeless students numbered 104,000 during the 2021-2022 school year, a study released Wednesday by Advocates for Children of New York found.
The city had 101,000 homeless students in the previous school year, roughly one out of every 10, the study found.
And its homeless student population has hovered in six digits for seven consecutive years, according to the study.
“If these 100,000 children made up their own school district, it would be a district larger than 99.5% of all other districts nationwide,” said Kim Sweet, executive director of Advocates for Children of New York, in a statement.
Homelessness has been a persistent problem for the city, and advocates worry a 20,000-plus influx of asylum
seekers will only place further strains to an already-burdened shelter system. Roughly 29,000 students lived in city shelters last year, according to the study. Another 69,000 were counted as “doubled up,” meaning they temporarily share the housing of others, the study found.
And about 5,500 were completely unsheltered, living in cars, parks or abandoned buildings, according to the study.
Homeless students were concentrated in districts in The Bronx, Upper Manhattan, Brownsville and Bushwick, the study found.
The numbers show the city and state need to step up, said Letasha Betancourt, an advocate with VOCALNY’s Homelessness Union who lived in a shelter with two special needs kids during the pandemic.
“My experience in the shelter showed me you have to fight on your own, but it shouldn’t be like that,” she said in a statement. “We need our state and city to do better.”

‘We are indebted to tribal society’, PM declares Mangarh Dham as national monument
Jaipur, Nov 1 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has declared Mangarh Dham in Rajasthan’s Banswara district as the National Monument, a government statement said on Tuesday.
The Prime Minister was at Mangarh Dham, also known as the martyrdom site of about 1,500 tribals, and paid rich tributes at the memorial. The tribals were massacred by the British Army in 1913. At the event, Modi shared the dais with the chief ministers from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
Modi said that before the freedom struggle of 1857, the tribal society had sounded the bugle for Independence. “We are indebted to the contributions of tribal society. It is the tribal society that saves the character of India.”

Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra should discuss among themselves and prepare a detailed plan and prepare a roadmap for the development of Mangarh Dham. Together, the four states and the Government of India will take it to new heights, he said.
Praising the presence of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot in the programme, he said, “As CM we worked together. Ashok Gehlot was the senior most in our tribe. Ashok Gehlot is the senior most CM among those who are still sitting on the stage.”
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that the history of Mangarh Dham has been written in golden letters. “We have appealed to the PM to make it a national monument. The tribal society was second to none in fighting the war of Independence.
“Why was a company that makes clocks given the tender of a bridge?
This means he had links with the party (BJP). The FIR in the case mentions neither the company nor its owners,” the Delhi Chief Minister said. He said there are allegations that the ruling party had received a huge donation from the company’s owners, and said such charges need to be probed.
Referring to the clean-up exercise at Morbi civil hospital ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to meet survivors of the bridge accident, “The spruce-up at hospital is a separate matter, but the matter is being covered up. The Chief Minister has no right to continue. He must resign and elections should be held immediately,” he said.
“Modi Government Feels No Pressure”: Minister Sees No “Moral Conflict” In Buying Russian Oil
New Delhi: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said there is no moral conflict, “absolutely none”, in India’s purchase of oil from Russia, which is facing condemnation over its ongoing war on Ukraine.
“We owe a moral duty to our consumers,” Mr Puri said in an interview with CNN at Abu Dhabi, citing India’s population of 1.3 billion.
“We don’t feel any pressure. [Narendra] Modi’s government doesn’t feel the pressure. We are the fifth largest economy in the world,” he further said during the interview, “India will respond according

To a pointed question if there was moral conflict in buying from Russia, he said, “Absolutely none; absolutely none. There

China one step closer to space station

people killed, 47 were children. Over a 100 injured are being treated, many of them at the Morbi civil hospital. The NDTV team visited the hospital last night and found a huge post-midnight “makeover” in progress just hours before the Prime Minister’s visit. A few walls and parts of the ceiling were freshly painted, and new water coolers were brought in. Bedsheets in the two wards where about 13 of those injured in the bridge tragedy are admitted were speedily changed too. Multiple people were seen sweeping the premises late at night. Amid the massive clean-up, old water coolers and damaged walls and ceiling gave away the real picture. Terming it a “tragedy event”, the Congress tweeted from its official handle in Hindi, “Tomorrow, Prime Minister Modi will visit the civil hospital in Morbi. Pakistan’s Semi-final Qualification Scenario
Clinical victory for Novak Djokovic
Scenario 1:Pakistan win both of their matches (against South Africa and Bangladesh), and South Africa go on to lose against the Netherlands. Pakistan will qualify for the semi-finals even if the Netherlands vs South Africa game is abandoned due to rain.
Scenario 2:Pakistan win both of their matches (against South Africa and Bangladesh), and India go on to lose against Zimbabwe by a big margin so that their Net Run Rate drops below Pakistan. Practically, the second scenario looks incredibly less plausible in comparison to the first, though both the scenarios aren’t the easiest to achieve for Pakistan.
The Babar Azam-led first need to beat South Africa on Thursday to keep themselves afloat in the tournament. A defeat against the Proteas would bury all their hopes.
Defending champion Novak Djokovic opened his Paris Masters campaign with a routine 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 win over Maxime Cressy on Tuesday, while Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz stayed in the hunt for a place at the ATP Finals with straight-sets victories. “A break came at the right time, perfect time actually. I was very pleased with the way I held my serve, didn’t face a break point.”
Earlier, Rublev was solid on return as he broke the big-serving John Isner three times to progress 6-2, 6-3.
Rahul, Virat star as India secure tense five-run win over Bangladesh, go on top of Group 2
Adelaide: (IANS) Matches between India and Bangladesh always bring out drama and emotions which leaves players and fans on the edge of their seats. On Wednesday, at the Adelaide Oval, rain added another dose of thrill in the Group 2 Super 12 match in Men’s T20 World Cup.
Eventually, India prevailed over Bangladesh by five runs to go on top of Group 2 and inch closer towards a spot in the semifinals. Fifties from KL Rahul and Virat Kohli (64 not out), along with Suryakumar Yadav’s 16-ball 30, took India to a massive 184/6 in 20 overs. Bangladesh seemed to be cruising to the
taking him for a six and consecutive fours, before scooping a six over his shoulder off the pacer over fine leg in the fifth over. Mohammed Shami was next to be taken to the cleaners, as Das heaved him over backward square leg for four. He brought up fifty in 21 balls with a top-edge on the pull going over deep square leg fence and followed up with an inside-out loft over extra cover for four as Bangladesh made 66 for no loss in seven overs before rain arrived, ahead by 17 runs on DLS method.
The 50-minute rain changed the equation to 151 in 16 overs. It got the momentum to shift in India’s favour as Rahul’s brilliant run-out of Das while going for a second run post rain break.

India To Contribute $500,000 To UN Trust Fund For CounterTerrorism
Delhi Air Quality Now “Severe” AAP vs BJP Over Who Is Responsible
With pollution levels at its highest since January, some areas in Delhi are hovering close to 500 in the index.
S Jaishankar made the announcement during his address at the plenary session of the UNSC’s special meeting of the Counter Terrorism Committee.
New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday said that India will contribute $500,000 to the United Nations Trust Fund for Counter Terrorism this year to aid capacitybuilding support to member states in combating terrorism. He made this announcement during his keynote address at the plenary session of the UNSC’s special meeting of the Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC ) on ‘countering the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes’ in New Delhi today. Addressing the UNSC’s special meeting in the national capital, Mr Jaishankar said, “India will be making a voluntary contribution of half a million dollars to the UN Trust Fund for Counter Terrorism this year to augment the efforts of Office of Counter-Terrorism in providing capacity-building support to member states in preventing and countering the threat of terrorism.”
ISRO carries out key test of its heaviest rocket’s engine
New Delhi: Air quality in Delhi has continued to dip, even as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and opposition BJP trade blame ahead of the civic body polls. The Air Quality Index at 1 pm was in the 400500 range or “severe” category in several
areas of the national capital.
With pollution levels at its highest since January, some areas in Delhi are hovering close to 500 in the index.
The concentration of PM2.5 (particulate matter up to 2.5 micrometres in diameter)
is at 40 to 60 times the World Health Organisation’s annual safe limit.
The latest forecast of air quality warns that it’s set to worsen and remain in the “very poor” category for at least a couple of days, which can trigger health advisories. Meanwhile, AAP workers today protested in front of Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s office, claiming he purposely did not approve their ‘Red Light on, Gaadi Off’ campaign aimed towards reducing pollution. The LG has, however, shot back, saying AAP “lied” about the rollout date of the campaign.
AAP has often attacked the Lieutenant Governor, appointed by the union government, accusing him of acting in “political vendetta” on directions from the Centre’s ruling BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
chief said the former prime minister made a “lucrative offer” to Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa in return for backing his government during the political turmoil in March this year. “DG ISI, listen carefully, the things I know, I am staying silent for my institutions and the country. I don’t want to damage my country,” the PTI chief said as the crowd cheered. “Our criticism is for constructive purposes and for your improvement. I can say more but will not say as it will hurt the institution,” he said.

met President Joe Biden and showcased Micron’s future plans and the creation of the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in Clay, New York.
Washington: Former US president Donald Trump on Friday hailed the sale of Twitter to tech billionaire Elon Musk, but declined to commit to rejoining the platform.
Musk, the world’s richest man, saw his $44 billion bid to buy the company concluded late Thursday after months of uncertainty and speculation.
The flight acceptance hot test of CE-20 engine has been carried out in the High Altitude Test facility of ISRO Propulsion Complex (IPRC) at Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu. The engine is assigned for the LVM3-M3 mission identified for launching the next 36 OneWeb India-1 satellites, the Indian Space Research Organisation said.
New York, Oct 28 (IANS) Sanjay Mehrotra, the Indian-American CEO of Micron Technology, has promised an investment of $100 billion over the next 20 years and creation of thousands of jobs in New York. In his LinkedIn post, Mehrotra said he
“I was humbled to meet with President Biden, introduce him to some of the Micron team, and showcase Micron’s plans for our future megafab in Clay, New York. This $100 billion investment over the next two decades will create the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the US,” the Kanpur-born CEO said in the post shared on Friday.
The top executive said that Micron Technologies will create 50,000 jobs in New York and partner with local colleges, universities and community organisations to build the workforce.
“I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country,” Trump said on his own Truth Social platform.
Musk has indicated he would lift Trump’s Twitter ban, imposed in the wake of the 2021 assault on the US Capitol that the Republican leader is accused of inciting. But Trump did not say whether he intended to make a comeback from his Twitter exile and refused to comment on the issue in a subsequent interview with Fox News Digital.
Babar Azam Should Quit Captaincy After T20 World Cup
Speaking on ARY News, former Pakistan cricketer Younis Khan and Kamran Akmal made a rather bold plea to Babar Azam, asking him to quit captaincy after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in Australia.
“If he considers me an elder brother, Babar Azam should quit captaincy after this World Cup. If you want him to score 25,000 runs or 22,000 runs, he should only play as a player.
Otherwise, he will come under extreme pressure and his performance will go down. If Babar or my uncle understands this, the former should step down as captain. He should focus on his game like Virat Kohli has. He should play for long, as after him, we aren’t able to see a batsman as solid as him,” said Akmal who is a cousin of Babar.
