Foodstuffs with added sugar, sodium and fat are killing us all. Processed food isn’t supposed to be easy to give up (it comprises over half the “dietary energy consumed” in the United States and United Kingdom). But it’s critical that you cut back. Frozen pizzas, mayonnaise, Oreos and the like drastically increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Travellers Vaccinated With China Hits Back After Joe Biden Covaxin Can Enter US From Nov. 8 Criticises Xi Jinping's No-Show The US Centers for Disease Control At COP26 acknowledged World Health HiIndia Newsdesk

Organisation's granting emergency use listing to India's indigenous vaccine Covaxin, developed by Bharat Biotech.

Washington: Travellers fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with Covaxin have been given the green light to enter the US from November 8. Talking to ANI over updating the approved travel list for Covaxin, CDC press officer, Scott Pauley said, "CDC's travel guidance applies to FDA approved or authorized and WHO Emergency Use Listing vaccines and encompasses any new vaccines that may be added to either of those lists over time." The last-minute addition comes less

than one week before the US launches its new travel system, which grants entry to foreign travellers who have received a vaccine that has been approved for emergency use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or WHO. The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Wednesday acknowledged the World Health Organisation's (WHO) granting emergency use listing (EUL) to India's indigenous vaccine Covaxin, developed by Bharat Biotech.

Deadly US drone strike in Kabul did not break law, Pentagon says HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Xi -- who leads the planet's largest emitter of the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change -has not travelled outside of China since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and has not joined world leaders for COP26. Beijing: China hit back Wednesday against criticism by US President Joe Biden, who had accused Beijing of not showing leadership after President Xi Jinping skipped the make-or-break COP26 United Nations summit in Glasgow. Xi -- who leads the planet's largest emitter

of the greenhouse gases responsible for climate change -- has not travelled outside of China since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic and has not joined world leaders for COP26. Biden on Tuesday had launched blistering criticism of the Chinese and Russian leaders for not attending the summit.

Biden rejects blame for shock Virginia election defeat HiIndia Newsdesk

A US drone strike that killed 10 Afghan civilians was an error that did not violate any laws, a Pentagon inspector said following an investigation. "It was an honest mistake," US Air Force Inspector Lieutenant General Sami Said told reporters. The strike on 29 August killed three adults, including a man who worked for a US aid group, and seven children. It took place as Western nations attempted to evacuate Afghans after the Taliban took control of the country.

Joe Biden has rejected suggestions that his Democratic party's shock loss in the Virginia governor's race was a verdict on his presidency.

Mr Biden argued that the miring of his legislative agenda in a Capitol Hill logjam did not sway the outcome. He cited "Trump voters", schools, jobs and petrol prices as other reasons for the surprise defeat of Terry McAuliffe. Republican Glenn Youngkin, a political newcomer, came from behind to win the Virginia governor's race on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the New Jersey governor's race went down to a nail-biting dead heat between the Democratic incumbent, Phil Murphy, and a little-known Republican challenger, Jack Ciattarelli. US media have projected Mr Murphy will win that race, though his opponent has not yet conceded. At the White House on Wednesday, Mr Biden was asked whether he accepted any blame for Tuesday's political earthquake in Virginia. He said voters are "upset and uncertain about a lot of things", including the pandemic, education, the economy and the price of petrol. Mr Biden conceded Democrats should have passed his signature $1.75tn (£1.3tn) package of social and climate programmes and a $1tn infrastructure bill before Tuesday's vote.

First woman, first Asian US slaps trade curbs on Israel’s NSO, maker of Pegasus spyware is new Boston mayor HiIndia Newsdesk

HiIndia Newsdesk

Michelle Wu, who entered public service out of frustration with the obstacles that her immigrant family faced, will be the next mayor of Boston, pledging to make the city a proving ground for progressive policy. Buoyed by support from the city’s young, Left-leaning voters and by black, Asian

and Latino residents, Wu, 36, soundly defeated city councillor Annissa Essaibi George. Essaibi George, who ran as a pragmatic centrist in the style of former mayor Martin J. Walsh, had the backing of the city’s traditional power centres, like its police, its trade unions and its workingclass Irish American neighbourhoods. “From every corner of our city, Boston has spoken,” Wu said, to a jubilant crowd in the city’s South End. “We are ready to meet the moment. We are ready to be a Boston for everyone.” Conceding the race, Essaibi George said, “I want to offer a great big congratulations to Michelle Wu.” “She is the first woman, first person of colour, and as an Asian American, the first elected to be mayor of Boston,” she said. “I know this is no small feat.”

The US government has slapped trade restrictions on Israel’s NSO Group, the maker of Pegasus software, for allegedly supplying “spyware to foreign governments,” that was used “to maliciously target government officials, journalists, business people, activists, academics and embassy workers.” The US decision to blacklist the NSO Group means US companies selling

sensitive American technology to the Israeli firm would need to get licences from the government before any sales could take place. The US Department of Commerce was unequivocal in stating why it had placed the NSO Group on its Entity List. NSO’s tools have “enabled foreign governments to conduct transnational repression, which is the practice of authoritarian governments targeting dissidents, journalists and activists outside of their sovereign borders to silence dissent, the department said. “Such practices threaten the rules-based international order,” the department said. NSO has said it is “dismayed” by the US decision. Last Thursday, Naor Gilon, Israel’s new ambassador to India, said Israel did not allow companies such as the NSO to sell their products to nongovernmental actors.

COP26:

190 nations and organisations pledge to quit coal

HPV vaccine cutting cervical cancer by nearly 90% HiIndia Newsdesk

The human papillomavirus, or HPV, vaccine is cutting cases of cervical cancer by nearly 90%, the first real-world data shows.

HiIndia Newsdesk

Major coal users including Poland, Vietnam and Chile are committing to shift away from the fossil fuel, in pledges made at the COP26 climate summit, the UK government says.

Coal is the single biggest contributor to climate change. The UK said 190 nations and organisations had vowed to quit coal. But some of the world's biggest coal-dependent countries, including Australia, India, China and the US, did not sign up to the pledge. Signatories to the agreement have committed to ending all investment in new coal power

generation domestically and internationally. They have also agreed to phase out coal power in the 2030s for major economies, and the 2040s for poorer nations, the UK said. "The end of coal is in sight," UK business and energy secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said. "The world is moving in the right direction, standing ready to seal coal's fate and embrace the environmental and economic benefits of building a future that is powered by clean energy."

Cancer Research UK described the findings as "historic", and said it showed the vaccine was saving lives. Nearly all cervical cancers are caused by viruses, and the hope is vaccination could almost eliminate the disease. The researchers said the success meant those who were vaccinated may need far fewer cervical smear tests too. Girls are offered the vaccine between the ages of 11 and 13, depending on where they live in the UK. The vaccine has also been offered to boys since 2019. The study, published in the Lancet, looked at what happened after the vaccine was introduced for girls in England in 2008. Those pupils are now adults in their 20s. The study showed a reduction in both pre-cancerous growths and an 87% reduction in cervical cancer.

EU says talks on 2015 Iran nuclear deal to resume November 29 HiIndia Newsdesk

he European Union announced on Wednesday that talks between world powers and Iran to revive the troubled 2015 Iran nuclear deal will resume in Vienna on November 29. The EU said the meeting of the commission of the socalled Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action will be attended by high-level officials from Iran, China, France, Russia, Germany and Britain. “Participants will continue the discussions on the prospect of a possible return of the United States to the JCPOA and how to ensure the full and effective implementation of the agreement by all sides,” a statement said. European nations have tried to bring the United States back into the nuclear accord, but their efforts had been frustrated so far by the unwillingness of Tehran’s new hardline government to resume formal talks that would include reopening parts of the 2015 deal.

Europe's top human rights organisation has pulled posters from a campaign that promoted respect for Muslim women who choose to wear headscarves after provoking opposition in France. The Council of Europe released the images last week for a campaign against antiMuslim discrimination. A slogan on one advert read: "Beauty is in diversity as freedom is in hijab". Several prominent French politicians condemned the message and argued the hijab did not represent freedom.

Covid panel suggests ‘aggressive testing’ over crowding during polls, actor’s death HiIndia Newsdesk

Karnataka recorded 239 new Covid-19 cases Tuesday as per the bulletin issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare. As many as five deaths were also reported.

With huge crowds turning up to pay tributes to late Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar in Bengaluru since news about his death spread Friday till his funeral Sunday and the bypolls held in north Karnataka, the Covid-19 Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) has recommended the government to conduct “aggressive testing”. A senior member of TAC, on condition of anonymity, told The Indian Express that it is imperative to increase testing due to the situation that prevailed in the state during the last few days. “While the situation in Bengaluru was beyond control, TAC had already recommended revision of daily targets in assembly constituencies

(Sindgi, Hangal) where the bypolls were held. With crowds turning up outside the hospital, Sree Kanteerava Stadium, and for the funeral of Puneeth Rajkumar in Bengaluru, the risk of a fresh outbreak persists. Considering this, all symptomatic people in the city should be tested without fail over the next fortnight,” the member explained. The health expert added that all those who test positive while being subjected to Rapid Antigen Testing (RAT) should be followed up with an RT-PCR test even if they test negative. “Tracing, tracking and testing should continue without fail. Special attention should be taken for those with symptoms of influenza-like infection (ILI), severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) and other respiratory diseases,” the member added. Karnataka recorded 239 new Covid-19 cases Tuesday as per the bulletin issued by the Department of Health and Family Welfare. As many as five deaths were also reported.

Hyderabad: Police in the State capital, along with the district administration and Revenue officials, are increasingly seizing premises where illegal activities are taking place, as was seen in recent instances where several houses were seized after police found that they were being misused as hubs for human trafficking, gambling and also storage of gutkha and drugs. With criminals opting for rented houses in residential colonies and other premises in business locations, the police have decided to act tougher with the seizure of all such premises. “Once the First Information Report is registered by the police for illegal activities on a premise, we are ensuring that steps are being taken quickly to seize it and thus prevent it from being misused again,” a senior official from the Cyberabad Police Special Operations Team said.

The results of the by-election, which was being seen as a battle of prestige between Rajender and Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, have raised the BJP’s hopes of emerging as the main challenger to the ruling TRS in the upcoming Assembly polls in December 2023.

NRI techie scales world’s eighthhighest peak without oxygen HiIndia Newsdesk

A Hyderabadi software professional based in Michigan (USA), Anurag took to mountaineering to break the monotony of the pandemic-induced lockdown in June 2020. NRI techie Anurag Nallavalli (29) has achieved the unique feat of summiting Mount Manaslu in Nepal, the eight-highest mountain peak in the world at 26,781 feet (or 8,163 metres), without a personal sherpa (an expert) or supplementary oxygen. A Hyderabadi software professional based in Michigan (USA), Anurag took to mountaineering to break the monotony of the pandemic-induced lockdown in June 2020. A weekend camping trip to a non-profit animal sanctuary in California, he said, changed his life. He was camping in a trailer along with a friend when the lockdown was announced. Stuck at the animal sanctuary owing to the lockdown, he started working part-time on a farm. He also continued working for his regular company remotely. “Amid all the rescued animals from alpaca, lama

and cows to pigs, we found positivity when it mattered. The couple who run the place are like my parents. Even today, that trailer is my address in the US,” he said. During his free time, he researched mountaineering, built connections, trained physically and mentally, and has scaled snow-covered peaks of Mt Hood (11,250 feet) in Oregon, Mt Rainier (14,411 feet) in Washington, Mt Shasta (14,179 feet) in California, Mt Denali (20,310 feet) in Alaska and Mt Pico de Orizaba (18,491 feet) in Mexico over the last 18 months. He has even attended work-related meeting calls at an altitude of 14,000-plus feet. While pandemic brought the worst to the fore for many, someone like Anurag credits the period for bringing out the best in him. “Had the pandemic not happened, I would not have taken hiking or mountaineering seriously.”

Current Affairs 1-billion-tonne emissions cut: Why it’s a big leap forward

W

This is the first time that India has taken any climate target in terms of its absolute emissions.

hile these mark a significant step-up in India’s existing climate targets, four of the five promises made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday are relatively low-hanging fruit – with at least one in response to global pressure. The most substantive new commitment, however, relates to the 1-billion-tonne reduction in its total projected emissions from now until 2030. This is the first time that India has taken any climate target in terms of its absolute emissions. Though it’s not a direct emission reduction target, something that only developed countries are expected to take, the reduction marks a major step towards bending India’s emissions trajectory. According to the World Resources Institute, India’s total greenhouse gas emissions were about 3.3 billion tonnes in 2018. It’s projected to rise above 4 billion tonnes per year by 2030 That would mean between now and 2030, India could be emitting anywhere between 35 to 40 billion tonnes at the current rates of growth. Cutting 1 billion tonnes would, therefore, represent a reduction of 2.5 to 3 per cent in its absolute emissions in the business-as-usual scenario in the next nine years. This was also the most unexpected of the five new announcements. The most anticipated promise was about setting a Net Zero target, something that the world had been demanding of India for long. Net Zero is a state in which a country’s total emissions are offset by absorptions of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, like that done by trees and forests, and physical removal of carbon dioxide through futuristic technologies. More than 70 countries have promised to become Net Zero by the middle of the century, and this is being considered vital for meeting the Paris Agreement goal of keeping global temperatures within 2 degrees Celsius from pre-industrial times.

India’s opposition has a lot to do with it

Prashant Kishor’s prediction about BJP is bang on

P

oll strategist Prashant Kishor is right. The Bharatiya Janata Party will remain powerful for decades. But not because of Narendra Modi’s legacy or Amit Shah’s organisational and electoral management, but because there seems to be no real challenge to it. So if the BJP does indeed continue its iron grip over Indian politics, it can well thank the opposition. As the BJP, under Modi and Shah, first established and began to tighten its grip over national politics 2014 onwards, the opposition too simultaneously abetted

region of the country has been limited. But Modi and Shah have ensured the party becomes a national force to reckon with, even if it remains the weaker party in some states. Just look at the 2019 Lok Sabha numbers in Delhi and West Bengal, the two states where the BJP lost the subsequent assembly polls, and you’ll know how, irrespective of its performance in states, the party has truly established itself a national one. What has made the BJP so powerful and victorious is a matter of greater academic research and debate. As someone who has covered elections, I would say it’s a blend of Modi’s unprecedented popularity and power of messaging, his government’s welfare push, some smart election and voter management and, of course, the party’s success in normalising its parochial version of Hindutva and popularising its majoritarian language.

…and why it will remain so Prashant Kishor’s prediction may not be wrong. He

They say 'who needs enemies when you have friends like these'. For the BJP, who needs friends when you have enemies like these? their rise, leaving the ground unchallenged. There are only two alternatives that can bring a tentacled, and now immensely popular, party like the BJP down — a strong and equally compelling pan-India party or a united opposition with a cohesive and saleable vision.

A stronger BJP under Modi-Shah… Support after the Mandir movement and Vajpayee’s six-year term surely count as the BJP’s milestones but in Modi-Shah era, the party has made huge strides, emerging as the only powerful national party. It’s true it has tasted failure in states like Delhi and West Bengal, where popular regional leaders like Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee got the better of it. It’s also true that the BJP’s expansion in the southern

believes a party that has secured 30 per cent of the vote share isn’t going anywhere in a hurry. The BJP has entrenched itself too deeply in national politics to be dislodged easily. To add to that, it has a well-spread and disciplined organisational structure, a very useful RSS cadre and a popular leader at its helm. But this isn’t just about Modi or present-day BJP. It’s also about how promising (or not) the opposition looks. Modi will not be the BJP’s face forever, and 2024 in all likelihood will be his last Lok Sabha polls as the PM. There is no clarity on who will succeed him and whether she/he will be as effective a leader. Despite this, if it seems the BJP will continue to remain a powerful force, it is because there is no real challenger in the picture even after seven years.

Panaji: Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday slammed the Congress for making Prime Minister Narendra Modi (and the BJP) “more powerful” by acting as the party’s publicist, and appeared to rule out any possibility of an alliance with the GOP ahead of elections in Goa next year. She accused the Congress of failing to recognise the need for the opposition to unite and underlined the importance of regional parties to counter the BJP and strengthen India’s federal structure.“Modiji is going to be more powerful because of the Congress... because the Congress is the BJP’s TRP (television ratings points). Ananya Panday turned heads with her statements On Ananya Panday's birthday, we revisit the times when the actor either generated a conversation on a relevant topic, or quite simply (and perhaps unintentionally) provided some laughs. Bollywood actor Ananya Panday is known for making statements which not only raised a few eyebrows, but also end up stirring a debate online.

On Koffee with Karan and nepotism “It isn’t as easy as people say it is. I think everyone has their own journey. My dad has never been a part of the Dharma film. He has never been on Koffee with Karan,” the actor had said, which prompted her contemporary Chaturvedi to talk about his journey of struggle in the industry — “Jahan hamare sapne poore hote hain vahan inn ka struggle shuru hota hai (Where our dreams are finally realised, that is when star kids’ real struggle starts).” Ananya Panday has often confessed how much of a fangirl she is when it comes to Karan Johar’s popular chat show Koffee With Karan. And in its sixth season, when she finally got a chance to appear on it even ahead of her debut film’s release, Ananya could barely contain herself. Half joking and half in earnest, the actor was heard saying on the show after winning the Koffee Hamper — “I have been waiting for this moment all my life. When the film (Student of the Year 2) got pushed, my mom said I wouldn’t be on this season of Koffee with Karan, so this hamper means a lot to me.” gain, as expected, this kind of praise for what Karan himself has called a ‘frivolous chat show,’ seemed a tad too much for the internet. And so began some funny, and some unhealthy trolling. Ananya chose to not respond to the drama and moved on with her life by signing another set of films.

I thoroughly enjoyed the last season of One Mic Stand. I thought it was hilarious. The sets that the celebrity guests produced were excellent, so the pressure was on to match that level of finesse. I am used to remembering long dialogues and delivering them, but performing live has its own thrill.” “Stand-up comedy is scarier than falling on a ramp during a fashion show. Soni Razdan, Aahana Kumra talk about ageism in Bollywood: ‘Huge struggle’

S

oni Razdan, Aahana Kumra and Ayush Mehra are all set to take us inside the lives of talent managers to Bollywood stars in their upcoming series Call My Agent: Bollywood. Ahead of the show’s premiere, got the opportunity to stream first three episodes of the show. In the very first episode, which has a cameo appearance of the very beautiful Dia Mirza, we are told how Bollywood has no place for an ageing woman while men in their 50s continue to dominate the box office. The term ‘ageism’ is subtly referred, which made us ask the cast their experience in Bollywood and if they have fear of not getting work after a certain age. “You can’t stop aging. It is good to play certain parts at a certain age. There are perfect examples in the West. There’s Meryl Streep, George Clooney and Brad Pitt, who’re playing their age and it’s so beautiful and graceful to see them age so well on screen. I believe our industry is also gradually moving towards that. Not a lot of roles were being written for older people earlier. But now, they are being explored,” Ayush said. Aahana mentions how she has had the honour of working with some great women irrespective of their age, including Konkona Sensharma, Soni Razdan and Ratna Pathak Shah. The “proud” actor, however, recalled her struggle as an outsider. “I did theater for good ten years. In that time, I didn’t take up any work on television or films for because I could not understand those mediums. In films, I was getting roles like heroine ki friend, heroine ki behen. They were really strange roles. On television, I was kicked out because I was not a ‘conventional bahurani.’

Frederick Law Olmsted, the 19th century architect of many great American parks, captured the experience well: It took almost 150 years, but science has verified that statement almost word for word, including by researchers associated with the Greater Good Science Center. While much of the research has been done in the U.S., Japan is where the science has been most readily embraced. Starting with research on blood pressure and stress hormone levels in the early 2000s, there is now a medical specialty in forest bathing—an activity in which more than a quarter of Japanese partake. There are nearly 100 officially sanctioned forest baths where the benefits have been demonstrated, with guides to help visitors get the most from their time. In Japan, the director of the ministry of forestry is a social scientist, not a botanist, which hints at the country’s commitment to health-through-nature. Trees are seen more as a mental health resource than one that can be extracted for profit. What are the benefits? According to research: lower blood pressure, heart rate, and stress; improved mood and immune function; better sleep; and increased creativity. There are surprising social benefits, too. During early forest bathing experiments, physician Qing Li found that after a couple hours in the woods, blood pressure went down an average of five points. The effects didn’t end once people left the trees; stress hormones were measurably lower for a week. After three days with two hours of forest bathing, markers of immune health showed improvement that lasted a week. And, of course, almost all the people said they just felt better, too! We are primarily visual creatures, so it is not surprising that simply looking at beautiful natural scenes makes us feel good. A heart surgeon at Vanderbilt suspected

it did more than that. Looking at it closely, he found that his patients whose hospital room faced the forest healed faster than those who faced the parking garage. I never knew why hospitals are full of nature scenes until I researched for this project. Strange that this bit of data reached the architects, but not the doctors! Nature is, of course, an all-senses experience. It’s not just about looking at the trees—you can smell them, too, and hear the wind in their branches, and touch their bark. Li’s group found that when people slept overnight breathing in essential oil from the Japanese cedar tree, they reported better sleep and had lower stress hormone levels. Since then, researchers at Vanderbilt have demonstrated nurses report less stress if this same oil is infused in their hospital workplace. Sound researcher Joshua Smyth at Penn State has found that when people listen to songbirds, the tension in their nervous systems falls, as measured by heart rate variability; but tension increases with the rumble of cars and roar of airplanes. Researchers with the Nation Park Service found their parks “look” worse when people hear human-made sounds. That kind of urban noise can be more than an irritant: Research in Bonn, Germany, found that kids at schools subject to a lot of airplane noise have a tougher time learning than those in schools across town.

Why nature is good for us So, why is the natural world good for us? The biophilia theory suggested that since we evolved in nature, our senses and body rhythms are best suited for that environment. According to biologist E. O. Wilson, there is an “innate emotional affiliation with other living organisms” that makes us calm and comfortable in nature. The sounds, smells, sights are our evolutionary “happy place” where we can rest and rejuvenate. We are deeply tied to a world from where we have strayed. Despite the comforts and safety of the modern world, there is a price to pay for urban living.

Other scientists espouse something called the attention restoration theory. Rachel Kaplan at the University of Michigan says “soft fascination” with the beauty and mystery of the natural world draws us in. Nature, she says, is “enticing but not demanding.” Neuroscience research by her student Stephen Kaplan shows that looking at nature pictures let the hard-working executive function parts of the brain recover, compared to looking at urban landscapes. Emotion scientists like the GGCS’s own Dacher Keltner believe there is something else going on as well: awe. That’s the feeling we get from encountering something vast and wondrous, that challenges our comprehension. In an awed state, our jaw drops and we get goosebumps. But more than that, we have the same physiological effects we see in forest bathing, where heart rate and blood pressure drop. Beyond the physiological, there are prosocial effects to awe: less concern for self, increased generosity, and more cooperation. This might be why research suggests there is less violence when trees are incorporated into low-income housing developments.

What a prescription looks like Researchers from Finland suggest that five hours a month is the minimum to have lasting effects (though you should leave the technology behind, or at least keep it in your pocket). It doesn’t have to be the forest; water, even urban parks, can be healing, too. For those with the resources, I prescribe breaks to a quiet cabin or tent for at least three days, once or twice a year. I also recommend house plants for home and office, microbreaks where you stop work to look out the window, or a couple short walks even if it is in an urban environment. If all else fails, there are always nature videos, which have been shown to have positive effects. A walk with a friend outside is a Greater Good “three-fer”: exercise, friendship, and nature all at once.

THINGS TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS Don’t ride a motorcycle Motorcycles look great, but their mortality numbers don’t. According to the NHTSA, motorcyclists are 35 times more likely to have a fatal accident than car drivers. Even survival comes with a cost: 96% of motorcycle accidents result in injury.

Don’t eat processed foods

Foodstuffs with added sugar, sodium and fat are killing us all. Processed food isn’t supposed to be easy to give up (it comprises over half the “dietary energy consumed” in the United States and United Kingdom). But it’s critical that you cut back. Frozen pizzas, mayonnaise, Oreos and the like drastically increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.

Don’t overeat

Calorie restriction can play a small part in adding years to your life, but unchecked calorie intake plays a very loud role in taking them away. The average American eats 3,600 calories a day (up nearly 25% from the 1960s), and the national obesity rate sits at 42.4%. Obesity coincides with common comorbidities like Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cancer.

Be stupid, just once, really often Vir Das

"What's the worse thing that could happen? Somebody will call you stupid? Somebody will say your life a joke? I 'm saying you should be that somebody," he said.

Period underwear

/hiindialive

@hiindia

/hiindiaNews

Speaking at Knox College, comedian Vir Das asked student to “be stupid”. “Be stupid, just once, really often. Because when you embrace the stupidity in your life, you really live. The dictionary defines stupidity as a person or situation that showcases a lack of common sense. I submit to you that common sense is overrated. And much worse than that, it’s common,” he said. “Be stupid in love. Get your heart broken. Shoot way above your league. Say outrageously romantic things, propose after a week! Go big and then go home, probably alone, but do it,” he advised. “Every single day … do one stupid thing with your body. Just one. No matter how your body ends up looking. Those are just phases in your life affected by how lonely you are, what magazines you are reading, and whatever a Kardashian is doing. But, I’m saying, jump for no reason, dance badly, never underestimate the power of a pelvic thrust in a public place. Play with your body. Play with your body It will save your heart when you are losing your mind,” he said in addition.

‘Period underwear is a game changer’ : Sarah Paulson pens a note

A

round the world, many people do not have access to safe period products, leading to them being exposed to infections and health risks associated with unhygienic practices. Then, there is also the issue of sustainability while using period products, because the ultimate goal should be to reduce the burden on the environment. Actor Sarah Paulson seems to have found a solution for both; she took to Instagram to share a real and raw take on what she feels about it. Writing a alongside a picture of herself posing in a white shirt, the 46-year-old wrote, “Ok…The only way to get me to photograph myself in my underwear (please don’t say panties, I cannot handle that word) is because these literally changed my life, and this isn’t an ad – it’s just something I LOVE. Period underwear.” She continued, writing, “Yes, underwear for your period. It’s a game changer. it’s made by my dear Karla Welch and it’s affordable and amazing, and since I love it so much- Karla and I are going to donate a whole bunch of it to help others have a sustainable period.” The actor pointed out that many people around the world “don’t have access to period products”, and “these underwear can help end period poverty”.

Skincare

Five ways to get glowing, tan-free skin this fall season

Be gentle

Though it is important to completely remove pore-clogging dirt and oils from the skin, it’s crucial to be gentle. It is recommended to stay away from drying soaps and harsh scrubs that can do more damage. It’s always a good idea to use a cleansing oil to get rid of the impurities and grime and use a gentle cleanser to remove the oil.

Include exfoliation in skin care routine

Fo r a g l ow i n g c o mp l e x i o n , exfoliation is important. The major reason behind the dull, flaky and dry look of the skin is the accumulation of dead cells on the outer layers. With exfoliation, it is possible to get rid of the layers and expose fresh skin that looks smoother, younger and healthier. One should start with a couple of exfoliations every week and depending on the skin toleration, increase the frequency.

Avoid travelling in the afternoon hours

The afternoon hours, especially the time from 11 am to 3 pm, is when the heat is extreme outside. So, it’s always better to avoid travelling to reduce skin tan and burn. Those who have no option but to go outside during this time should make sure they wear light-coloured clothes that are airy. Also, one should keep a water bottle and wet tissues handy to stay cool and hydrated.

Watch your diet

It’s important to keep a watch on the diet to get radiant, glowing skin even. It is necessary to include lots of vegetables like spinach, carrots, beans, peas and tomatoes along with fruits and nuts to optimise nutrition and provide the body with the key ingredients for healthy skin.

Use sunscreen

Applying sunscreen can go a long way in preventing suntans. For Indian skin tones, any sunscreen containing an SPF of 30 or above is recommended. By blocking the harmful UV rays of the sun, sunscreen greatly reduces the chances of getting a tan. Sunscreen is also effective in preventing dark spots and discolouration of the skin.
