Good Day For Democracy : Joe Biden Cheers Democrats’ Show

future of Joe Biden’s presidency awaited in more competitive territory.
US midterms 2022
US midterm elections: “It was a good day I think for democracy. And I think it was a good day for America,” Joe Biden told a White House news conference.
Washington: US President Joe Biden on Wednesday hailed a “good day for democracy” after a surprisingly strong performance in midterm elections with Republicans inching toward a slim majority in only one chamber of Congress. Biden acknowledged voters’ frustration but said the “overwhelming majority” of Americans supported his economic agenda after Tuesday’s election in which Republicans hammered him over stubbornly high inflation and some questioned the legitimacy of his election two years ago.
“It was a good day I think for democracy. And I think it was a good day for America,” Biden told a White House news conference.
“While the press and the pundits were predicting a giant red wave, it didn’t happen.”

Despite their liberal history, states like Massachusetts, Maryland and Illinois have elected moderate Republican governors in the past. But the Republicans this year appeared to be too conservative in these states, handing Democrats easy victories in midterm elections that could otherwise prove difficult for the party.
Massachusetts and Maryland also saw historic firsts: Democrat Maura Healey became the first woman elected as Massachusetts governor, as well as the first openly lesbian governor of any state, and Wes Moore became the first Black governor of Maryland.
American basketball star Brittney Griner moved to a penal colony in Russia
The Biden administration is committed to work with India on its transition away from Russia, the White House has said. It said there are a number of countries that have learned “the hard way of the fact” that Moscow is not a reliable source of energy or security.
When it comes to India’s relationship with Russia, the US has consistently made the point that it is a relationship, that developed and was cemented over the course of decades, really came to be during the Cold War at a time when the United States was not in a position to be an economic partner, a security partner, a military partner to India, State Department Spokesperson Ned Price told reporters at a news conference in Washington Tuesday.
“India again reaffirmed that it stands against this war, that it wants to see dialogue, it wants to see diplomacy, it wants to see an end to this needless bloodshed that Russia is responsible for inside of Ukraine,” he said.
The jailed American basketball star Brittney Griner has been moved to a penal colony in Russia, her legal team said Wednesday. A Russian court rejected her appeal of her nine-year sentence for drug possession last month. “Brittney was transferred from the detention center in Iksha on the 4th November. She is now on her way to a penal colony. We do not have any information on her exact current location or her final destination,” the statement from her legal team said.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, “Every minute that Brittney Griner must endure wrongful detention in Russia is a minute too long.
As the Administration continues to work tirelessly to secure her release, the President has directed the Administration to prevail on her Russian captors to improve her treatment and the conditions she may be forced to endure in a penal colony.
Indian-Americans Shine As 4 Elected To US House, Several Win Midterm Polls
Four Indian-American politicians from the ruling Democratic Party, including Raja Krishnamoorthi, Ro Khanna and Pramila Jayapal, were elected to the US House of Representatives on Wednesday and many others won across the country to state legislatures in the highly polarised midterm elections.
Indian-American entrepreneur-turnedpolitician and Democrat Shri Thanedar became the first Indian American to win the Congressional elections from Michigan, pipping Republican candidate Martell Bivings.
Thanedar, 67, currently represents the third district in the Michigan House.
In the eighth Congressional district of Illinois, Raja Krishnamoorthi, 49, was re-elected for the fourth consecutive term by a comfortable margin. He defeated his Republican opponent Chris Dargis.
In Silicon Valley, Indian-American Ro Khanna, 46, defeated his compatriot Republican opponent Ritesh Tandon in the 17th Congressional District of California. Chennai-born Congresswoman Pramila

The Washington Post newspaper on Friday said that Indian-Americans can play an important role in some of the tightly contested races. “Ahead of mid-term elections that could be decided by razorthin margins, Democrats are hoping to capitalise on some of the optimism felt by IndianAmericans, a growing and increasingly vital bloc of voters,” the daily wrote.
Jayapal, the only Indian-American woman lawmaker in the House of Representatives, defeated her Republican rival, Cliff Moon in the 7th Congressional District of Washington state. Khanna, Krishnamoorthi, and Jayapal were seeking their fourth consecutive terms. Ami Bera, 57, the seniormost among all Indian-Americ of Representatives from the 7th Congressional District of California.

maintaining combat readiness to fight and win wars as he took charge of the military for a record third five-year term. Xi, 69, has been reappointed as the General Secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) and head of the Central Military Commission (CMC) -- the overall high command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) for an unprecedented third five-year term by the party’s once-in-afive-year Congress here last month. Holding the three powerful posts of the head of the party, the military, and the Presidency, Xi is the only leader besides the party founder Mao Zedong to continue in power after completing 10year tenure, while all his predecessors retired. On Tuesday, Xi inspected the joint operations command centre of the CMC here which provides vital support to the strategic command of the CPC Central Committee and the CMC.

Sunak said he accepted Williamson’s resignation “with great sadness” and thanked him for his “personal support and loyalty”. “Your commitment to successive Conservative governments and the party over the years has been unwavering,” he said. However, the Opposition has branded the episode as a sign of “poor judgement and leadership” by Sunak, and Labour Party Leader Sir Keir Starmer will use the weekly PMQs in the House of Commons to pile on further pressure over the issue. Downing Street has maintained the new Prime Minister “knew there was a disagreement” but that he didn’t know the “substance” of the messages until they were published by The Sunday Times’ newspaper.
At least 64 children killed in UK military Afghan operations
Pakistan’s former premier Imran Khan on Wednesday threatened to disclose the name of a second military officer who he claimed monitored his execution plan from the control room along with Major General Faisal Naseer.
Khan, 70, suffered a bullet injury in the right leg when two gunmen fired a volley of bullets in the Wazirabad area of Punjab province on Thursday, where he was leading a protest march against the Shehbaz Sharif government.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he discussed the joint production of modern weapons with his Indian counterpart during talks in Moscow on Tuesday.
“We discussed in detail the state and prospects of military-technical cooperation, including joint production of modern arms,” Lavrov said, in comments carried by the TASS news agency, without providing more information.
The two countries are seeking to expand their trade ties and cooperate more closely in the fields of nuclear energy and space travel, Lavrov said. For decades, India has relied on Russia for its military equipment. Russia is also the fourth-biggest market for Indian pharmaceutical products.
At least 15,000 killed by hot weather in Europe in 2022: WHO
The UK government has paid out for the deaths of at least four times as many Afghan children than it has previously admitted to.
Compensation payments have been issued for 64 children, rather than the 16 publicly acknowledged. All were killed in fighting involving UK forces between 2006 and 2014. The new figures come from Freedom of Information requests made by the charity Action on Armed Violence (AOAV).
Airstrikes and being caught in crossfire were among the most common causes of death that were listed.
AOAV believes the number of recorded civilian deaths caused by British forces is likely to be an underestimate.
Islamabad: (IANS) In a sudden decision, the Pakistan government on Wednesday announced that it will move ahead to establish an interestfree, Islamic banking system and withdraw in the coming days appeals filed against it in the Supreme Court, according to a media report. This was announced by Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Wednesday, Samaa TV reported.
At least 15,000 people have died in Europe because of hot weather in 2022 so far, the World Health Organization said Monday, with Spain and Germany among the worst-affected countries, according to media reports. The three months from June-August were the hottest in Europe since records began, and the exceptionally high temperatures led to the worst drought the continent has witnessed since the Middle Ages.
“Based on country data submitted so far, it is estimated that at least 15,000 people died specifically due to the heat in 2022,” the WHO’s Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said in a statement.

Of those deaths that have been recorded, the actual number of children killed could actually be as high as 135, because some of the fatalities are described in Ministry of Defence (MoD) documents merely as sons and daughters - with ages and circumstances of deaths not always included.
AOAV says it is possible some of those 135 were adults, but the likelihood of them having been under 18 is high because of the very young average age in Afghanistan. Most of the 881 fatality claims made to the British were rejected and only a quarter received compensation.

T20 WC: England Destroy India, Set Final Date With Pakistan
India suffered a 10-wicket drubbing at the hands of England in the second semifinal to end their campaign at the T20 World Cup on an embarrassing note at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.
England thus entered the final where they will take on Pakistan at the MCG on Sunday.
Put in to bat, India posted 168 for six after Virat Kohli’s 40-ball 50 and Hardik Pandya’s 33-ball 63. In reply, England made a mockery of the chase as they romped home with four overs to spare, with Alex Hales (86) and Jos Buttler (80) producing commanding fifties during their unbroken opening stand.
While the Indian bowlers cut a sorry figure and stayed wicket-less, Chris Jordan returned with 3 for 43 for England.A six from Jos Buttler down the ground was how England scored the winning runs.
“On the day we were not good enough,” said India coach Rahul Dravid at his post-match press conference. “We were out-classed and out-played in every department,” he added.
It was a one-sided victory for England as they dominated ever since the start and their openers just threw India out of contention.
Mind India Losing, But...”: Shashi Tharoor On T20 WC Semis Rout
New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had a unique take as India was drubbed by 10 wickets by English in the T20 World Cup semifinal today. Mr Tharoor said that he does not mind the loss, but he does mind India not showing up today.
“I don’t mind India losing: victory and defeat are part of sports. But I do mind India not showing up today,” Mr Tharoor tweeted. The Congress leader put out the tweet just a couple of balls before England hit the winning runs and sealed a berth in the T20 World Cup final.
In Delhi Liquor Policy Case, Boss Of Hyderabad Pharma Firm Is Arrested
New Delhi: The Director of a pharma company was among two people arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday in connection with its money laundering probe into alleged irregularities in the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy.
Sarath Reddy, Director of Hyderabadbased Aurobindo Pharma, was arrested along with Benoy Babu of Pernod Ricard late Wednesday night by the agency in the Delhi liquor policy case. Both officials have been arrested under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
The probe agency had previously searched his premises and had questioned him twice.
The Enforcement Directorate has conducted multiple raids in this case so far. In September, it arrested Sameer Mahandru, managing director of a
After Mass Layoffs, Meta Offers Immigration Help To H-1B Visa Holders
As large-scale layoffs begin at Facebook’s parent company Meta, employees on work visas such as H-1Bs are now faced with uncertainty over their immigration status, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg acknowledging “this is especially difficult if you’re here on a visa” and offering support to those impacted.
Meta announced that it is laying off 11,000 employees or 13 per cent of its workforce, with Zuckerberg describing it as “some of the most difficult changes we’ve made in Meta’s history.” US-based technology companies hire a large amount of H-1B workers, the majority of whom come from countries such as India.
Meta announced that it is laying off 11,000 employees or 13 per cent of its workforce
The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like
India and China.
“I’ve decided to reduce the size of our team by about 13 per cent and let more than 11,000 of our talented employees go. We are also taking a number of additional steps to become a leaner and more efficient company by cutting discretionary spending and extending our hiring freeze through Q1,” Zuckerberg said in a letter to employees.
“I want to take accountability for these decisions and for how we got here. I know this is tough for everyone, and I’m especially sorry to those impacted,” he said.
Among the measures being put in place by the company in the US to help those impacted by the layoffs is “immigration support”.

For India, US Visa Processing Time To Become Shorter
By Mid-2023
New Delhi: The waiting period for issuance of American visas is expected to see a significant fall by summer of 2023 and the number is projected to reach around 1.2 million, a senior official of the US embassy said on Thursday.
“India is number one priority for Washington (for issuance of visas). Our aim is to bring the situation to the pre-Covid-19 level by the middle of next year,” the official said.
India has been one of the very few countries where applications for US visas saw a major upswing after coronavirus-related travel restrictions were lifted.
Considering the long wait time for grant of visas, the US is also rolling out a series of initiatives including hiring of more personnel and increasing the “drop box” facilities, the official said.

New York: (IANS) Pavithra Prabhakar, an Indian-American professor of computer science at the Kansas State University, has received an Amazon Research Award to design a tool that minimises negative user experiences.
Prabhakar, who is the Peggy and Gary Edwards chair in engineering, was one of 74 recipients of the awards from Amazon, which also includes an unrestricted gift, access to more than 300 Amazon public datasets, and Amazon Web Services’ artificial intelligence and machine learning services and tools.
The tool designed by Prabhakar would be utilized to minimise disruptive changes to user experience of machine learning-based software systems as the product is refined and retrained over time.
“The broad objective of the project is to automatically characterize how much two versions of machine learningbased systems are similar or different,” Prabhakar said.
She further said even though these systems are regularly retrained to achieve superior performance, it does not often translate to a better user experience.

US risks losing talented H1-B visa holders to Canada: Study
New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS) The US risks losing talented foreigners, particularly those married to other skilled professionals, to Canada, which grants work authorisation to spouses of all skilled foreign workers, says a new study. But granting employment authorisation to all spouses of H-1B visa holders would encourage more skilled migrants, including Indians, to choose the US over Canada, the study by National Foundation for American Policy revealed.
In 2015, then President Barack Obama allowed the spouses of H-1B visa holders to work in the US via the H4 (dependent) visa.
H4 visas are issued to dependent spouses and children who accompany H-1B, H-2A, H-2B, and H-3 visa holders to the US.
The spouses of H-1B visa holders tend to be highly educated, many of them in STEM fields, and previously had careers of their own or worked to support their families.
London: (IANS) King Charles III welcomed members of the Asian community, including Indians, who came to the UK some 50 years ago after they were expelled by Ugandan dictator Idi Amin. The first major engagement to take place at Buckingham Palace since royal mourning was attended by distinguished business leaders from
“The ceremony offered thanks to over 60 voluntary organisations who provided humanitarian assistance and reunited many of the refugees and volunteers,” The Royal Family said in a tweet. The King spoke to Virginia Bottomley and Peter Bottomley, MP, who opened their home to Indian-origin Razia Jetha and her late husband Roshan when they arrived from Uganda in 1972, The National reported.
“The US can reap significant economic benefits, ease labour shortages, and attract more workers in the global competition for talent if it expanded current rules on work eligibility for the spouses of H-1B visa holders,” the study, authored by Madeline Zavodny, said. The number of Indians who became permanent residents in Canada increased by over 115 per cent between 2016 and 2020 and 2021.
“Allowing the spouses of H-1B visa holders to work upon arrival would help recruit and retain skilled workers and increase the already-considerable economic benefits of the H-1B visa category,” Zavodny said.
She estimates that almost 90 per cent of the spouses of H-1B visa holders have at least a bachelor’s degree, and over half have a graduate degree, based on American Community Survey data (2017-2019).

Perhaps the most notable outcome to be expected from the new US Congress that will emerge from the November 8 midterm elections would be President Joe Bidens nominee for Ambassador to India, a position that has been vacant for nearly two years.
Perhaps the most notable outcome to be expected from the new US Congress that will emerge from the November 8 midterm elections would be President Joe Bidens nominee for Ambassador to India, a position that has been vacant for nearly two years.
Biden’s last nomination -- Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti -- was returned by the outgoing US Senate, effectively killing it, way back in January. The administration did not return it forcing Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which must approve ambassadors and foreign policy-related postings, to reconsider it or name a replacement.
The US recently named Elizabeth Jones to serve as Charge d’Affaires, ad interim in New Delhi. Foreign policy is rarely an issue in US elections.
“Americans don’t pay close attention to foreign policy, and as a general rule, it’s not uppermost in their minds when they go to cast ballots,” said Doug Schwartz, director of the Quinnipiac University Poll, which is closely monitored by political strategists.
“It’s more kitchen table issues, things that they regard as affecting their day-to-day life, pocketbook issues like inflation.”
Having said that, US-India relations enjoy wide bipartisan support among Democrats and Republicans alike. It is unlikely to fare any better or worse with either party’s control on Congress -- all 435 seats of the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats.
“The US midterm elections should not have a direct impact on US-India relations,” said Richard Rossow, head of the India chair at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a leading US think-tank.
TWITTER
Elon Musk’s revelation that Twitter has suffered a “massive” revenue drop since he took over 10 days ago underscores the precarious nature of the social media company’s finances after he saddled it with $13 billion in debt, credit experts say.
Elon Musk tweeted on Friday that Twitter was losing more than $4 million a day, largely because advertisers started fleeing once he took over. He has blamed civil rights activists pressuring advertisers, though many in the advertising industry say his tweets spreading conspiracy theories have contributed.
Yet even before this upheaval, Musk had engineered an acquisition that pushed the San Francisco-based company’s finances to the edge.
Twitter faces interest payments totaling close to $1.2 billion in the next 12 months on the debt that Musk piled on it, following a string of interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, an analysis of the financing terms disclosed in regulatory filings shows.
The payments exceed Twitter’s most recently disclosed cash flow, which amounted to $1.1 billion as of the end of June, according to financial disclosures Twitter made before Musk took it private on October 27.
Some aspects of Twitter’s current financial health are uncertain, because the company hasn’t made enough disclosures. It’s not clear how much of the $5.29 billion debt Twitter had before the acquisition was refinanced or remained with the company. It’s also

With bipartisan backing, IndiaUS ties safe no matter which party wins midterms
The civil nuclear agreement, which Rossow referenced, ended India’s nuclear isolation caused by the 1998 Pokhran II nuclear tests. It also paved the way for India’s membership of the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group, an elite club of nations that controls global trading in nuclear material.
The deal was proposed and pushed by George W. Bush, the then Republican President. And after India signed on, agreeing to the separation of civilian use nuclear plants that would be open to international inspection from its military use facilities, the deal was passed by the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives and the Senate.
It was bipartisan congressional support for ties with India that killed a US move to sell F-16s to Pakistan in 2016. It was proposed by the administration of President Barack Obama, a Democrat. And it was struck down by a Republican-controlled Congress, in a bipartisan vote.
It was a Republican-controlled congress that sympathetically considered an appeal from the Trump administration’s defense secretary Jim Mattis in 2018 to waive sanctions against India under a US law that seeks to punish Russia by scaring away its military equipment customers with the threat of secondary sanctions -- under a 2017 law called Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA).
“The relationship does not require regular legislative boosts, so Congress’ impact is normally quite nominal, barring when a ‘big deal’ like civil nuclear cooperation requires legislative support.”
And when a “big deal” such as the civil nuclear deal comes up, the relationship’s bipartisan support carries it across the finish line. “Both Democrats and Republicans have been supportive of strengthening the relationship, and I expect this will remain the case,” Rossow added.
India became a target for US sanctions under this law for buying Russian S-400 missile defence systems, deal worth more than $5 billion in all. The US had previously sanctioned China -- its military purchases department -- and Turkey, a NATO ally, for buying the same weapon system.
India appears to have escaped these sanctions. So far. And despite the fact that Robert Menendez, a Democrat who wrote the CAATSA bill, is chairman of the Senate committee that will determine if India deserves to be sanctioned. He has aggressively tried to corner India but hasn’t succeeded.
Not yet, and only because of the strong bipartisan support for ties with India.
Burden
not clear how much of the $2.7 billion in cash that Twitter held as of the end of June it got to keep once it went private.
Debt investors and analysts said Musk needs to ensure the company is profitable enough to meet its debt payments or it will require a cash infusion.
“Leverage could spike into the double digits unless Mr. Musk contributes significantly more equity than previously contemplated or significantly improves profitability,” S&P Global analysts wrote in a credit research note. They have given the company a “junk” B-minus rating. Twitter and Musk representatives
did not respond to requests for comment. Musk and his co-investors collectively cut a check for more than $30 billion of their own money for the Twitter deal. That money would be at risk if Twitter required a debt restructuring down the line.
Musk has started to dramatically slash costs, letting go of half of the company’s 7,400 employees. Overall, he is trying to find up to $1 billion in annual infrastructure cost savings, including from servers and cloud services. In 2021, Twitter had total costs and expenses of $5.6 billion.
Musk has also outlined plans for a new subscription service that will include the verification of Twitter users’ authenticity and cost $8 per month. If he can generate enough revenue to diversify Twitter’s profits without alienating users, that would be a boon, credit analysts said.
“It’s going to be hard to sell the debt because the business is expected to decline next year,” said Roberta Goss, a senior managing director at Pretium Partners LLC, which invests in corporate debt.

The Congress on Wednesday deployed its top leaders in Himachal Pradesh, which votes on November 12, to spread the word about its promised comprehensive welfare package that appears to have caught people’s attention more than the BJP’s “doubleengine” rhetoric.
While Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a meeting in Shimla rural, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot, his Chhattisgarh counterpart Bhupesh Baghel and Sachin Pilot campaigned elsewhere in the hill state.
A health regulatory authority on Wednesday, citing misleading advertisements, asked Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved to stop manufacturing five products the company has promoted as a treatment for blood pressure, diabetes, goitre, glaucoma and high cholesterol.

“No One Above Law”: Telangana Minister Back From Dubai After Raids
Hyderabad: Telangana minister Gangula Kamalakar returned from Dubai hours after his properties were searched by the Enforcement Directorate in an illegal mining and money laundering case, and said he has nothing to hide. “I have been in the (mining) business for 32 years, and have always worked within the purview of law, in a transparent manner,” he told reporters last night at the airport.
“No one is above the law, so I will cooperate. That is why I returned within 12 hours. I will clarify everything and go back to Dubai,” he said as he headed for Karimnagar, his constituency. He had gone to Dubai for a family trip.
In Karimnagar, inspections by the central agency ED and an Income Tax
team are likely to continue today, after a 10 am-to-8.30 pm operation yesterday. The 12-member team, including three
Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers, had come to the minister’s house in 12 vehicles. They carried important documents in seven bags.
Mr Kamalakar, Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, Food and Civil Supplies, has granite firms in Karimnagar. A case was filed against him in 2012 alleging the exchequer lost some ₹ 750 crore due to his “illegal” operations. BJP leaders had complained against him again in November last year.
The ED action against the minister is likely to further fuel the fight between the BJP and the TRS government led by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (‘KCR’), who has alleged the Narendra Modi government of misusing central agencies to harass non-BJP leaders.
Mr Amrutiya was seen in videos wearing a life tube and trying to rescue people who fell into the river after the cables of the century-old bridge snapped on October 30.
Various reports said he “jumped into the river to save lives”. The act won him a BJP “ticket” to contest the Gujarat election from the Morbi constituency, sources said.
Mr Amrutiya was not on the BJP’s original list of Gujarat candidates, said the sources.
Some 135 people died in the bridge disaster, one of the worst in recent times.
The BJP, which has ruled Gujarat - Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state - for 22 years, has faced a huge backlash over the way the bridge maintenance contract was given to a Gujarat-based clockmaker, Oreva.
Oreva, known for making clocks, watches, fans, e-bikes and LED lights, won a 15-year contract to operate and maintain the bridge despite its lack of experience in repairing public infrastructure.
PM’s plea to Himachal: Don’t change govt
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday skipped the swearing-in of the Chief Justice of India to address election rallies in Himachal Pradesh, where the ruling BJP appears on shaky ground.
Addressing his last two meetings ahead of Saturday’s polling, Modi urged voters to buck the state’s trend of changing the government every five years.
Reports from the ground suggest simmering anti-incumbency. Besides, many BJP leaders are contesting as rebels, defying a party crackdown and even persuasion by Modi and party chief J.P. Nadda.
At the first rally in Chambi in the Kangra valley region, Modi said Himachal was at a crucial juncture and needed a stable government.

‘Very embarrassing’, SC adjourns demonetisation hearing

New Delhi: (IANS) The Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned until November 24 the scrutiny of the decision-making process behind the 2016 demonetisation policy as Centre failed to affidavit, saying “it is very embarrassing”.
On October 11, the Supreme Court asked the Centre and RBI to file comprehensive affidavits on the 2016 demonetisation decision and also keep the files ready in connection with Centre’s letter to the RBI, the decision of the RBI Board, and
the demonetisation announcement. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Justice S.A. Nazeer and comprising Justices B.R. Gavai, A.S. Bopanna, V. Ramasubramanian, and B.V. Nagarathna adjourned the matter after Attorney General R. Venkataramani sought time to file a comprehensive affidavit. The AG apologised to the bench for not
being able to prepare the comprehensive affidavit and sought a week’s time. The bench remarked: “Normally a constitution bench never adjourns like this. We never rise like this. It is very embarrassing for the court also.” On the aspect of adjournment, Venkataramani said that it was embarrassing for him also.

Bollywood is getting its ‘a** kicked’ by films like Kantara
Actor Varun Dhawan is mostly known for his mainstream Bollywood movies, but he said in an interview that he is keen on starring in South Indian cinema. The actor said Bollywood should take inspiration from films like Kantara and KGF, and work towards making Indian cinema as a whole shine.
The actor, who was last seen in the relationship drama JugJugg Jeeyo, will next be seen in the horror comedy Bhediya. Varun was speaking at the India Today Conclave when he expressed his desire to work in South cinema.
Varun said, “Indian films are doing really well… If Kantara is doing really well or KGF 2 or Vikram, we should seek inspiration from these films and try and work with each other. It’s the best thing for Indian films to grow right now. I know it sounds really easy right now because the Hindi films are getting their a** kicked right now. So maybe it’s a great time and easy answer for me to say that. I have always wanted to do films in Telugu, Tamil, and Bhediya is going to release in Telugu and Tamil as well.” The actor said that while many people can divide them, the Indian film industry functions with unity. “I just seek inspiration… I think Allu Arjun is amazing and Yash has done great with KGF. Even now, if you see, Kantara, the way the film has been written, directed and acted by the same person, Rishab Shetty. People can divide us, but we are one country and it is a good time to be collaborative because cinema, in general, we are going through a big transition all over,” he said.

Actor Abhishek Bachchan says the film industry has long been “obsessed” with box office numbers but the influx of OTT has put the spotlight on content. The 46-year-old actor, who made his foray into the digital space with psychological thriller series Breathe: Into the Shadows, said streaming platforms have given Indian stories an opportunity to shine on global stage.
“When OTT platforms came into being, everybody was accessible to anybody at the push of a button. We have a larger audience now and better reach. You can watch shows in every language – be in Indian or foreign. “There is a huge appetite for Indian story telling. Good content will always work no matter the medium… Fortunately, digital platforms do not put out numbers. It keeps the focus on content. We have become far too obsessed about collections and money as opposed to the content,” Bachchan said at an event. At the event, the actor was joined by Breathe: Into the Shadows season two co-stars Amit Sadh, Naveen Kasturia, Saiyami Kher and director Mayank Sharma. Abhishek Bachchan said it’s one of the toughest task to flesh out an engaging thriller. “It’s a very difficult genre to execute because thriller is a rarity. For me, it was the character that drew me to the project. I loved Mayank’s writing…That is integral to a good thriller. It wasn’t superficial at all. If you are not emotionally invested, it goes to waste. Mayank has done a great job,” he said.

Acclaimed film actress and director Nandita Das, who is always passionate about women’s welfare and gender equality, is no stranger to tackling difficult issues that are often missed or go unnoticed, as did most notably in her film “Zwigato”, starring Kapil Sharma.
At the launch of the ILSS Emerging Women’s Leadership Program in New Delhi, Das, however, spoke about her short film “Listen to Her”.
She shot the film, which, like “Zwigato”, also revolves around the theme of the complexities of life under Covid-induced lockdowns, at home with son Vihaan and it zeroes in on the issue of women being overburdened while staying back and facing domestic violence to

Dugal credits directors Gaurav Chawla and Ananya Banerjee for guiding her through the project, but claims that sometimes she couldn’t comprehend their explanations. “To dispense logic and understand a scene, Ananya would tell me, ‘Like in a horror film…’, but I would look blankly at her because I had no [reference in my head]. I would tell her, ‘I don’t know what that means,” jokes Dugal, adding, “Gaurav and Ananya are two talented directors and I had a ball working with them.”
Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt welcome baby girl
People are slowly realising I’m not an idiot : Jahnvi Kapoor
Bollywood starlet Janhvi Kapoor is back in theatres after a considerable gap as Mili has released on the big screen. Her last theatrical release was in March 2021. Mili is extra-special for Janhvi as it has been produced by her dad Boney Kapoor, markng the first time that father and daughter have collaborated.
Bollywood filmmaker Sajid Khan, who was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women during the #MeToo movement in India, is a part of the sixteenth season of TV reality show Bigg Boss, and his participation has been questioned by many. In this week’s Friday Ka Vaar, host Salman Khan will also question Sajid’s presence on the show, but for different reasons. A new promo of the show, shared by Colors, has Salman asking what is Sajid even doing on the show because he is barely seen throughout the episode. “Sajid iss ghar ke andar kar kya raha hai? (What is Sajid doing in this house?” Salman asks in the video. In response, the filmmaker says, “Waqt aane pe apne patte dikhaunga (Will show my cards at the right time).” Salman then explains to Sajid that this show doesn’t give time to anyone and he himself is giving reasons to the audience and the makers to evict him from the show.
Janhvi added, “Business wise and creatively (Mili), this was a safer option. The timing and story were also just right as at the heart of it, it’s the story of a father and daughter. When papa saw this film (the original Malayalam version), he called me and began crying and told me that he thought he was seeing the both of us in the film. It just felt like it was coming from the right place, it didn’t feel like we’ll be making a project together. It felt dil se (from the heart).”
Janhvi Kapoor calls out her own privilege;
Janhvi Kapoor said, “We had both take this decision consciously. It would’ve been the easier way out if I’d have done my first film with him, but, I also think, there’d have been more pressure on the both of us. From his side, I think, not from a business point of view, but rather, emotionally, because he’d have been launching his daughter. And from my side, it would’ve been about giving my father (Boney Kapoor) a viable film to work and perform that way, I think, it’d have been too much.”
Now, the couple has shared the official announcement regarding the same. “And in the best news of our lives- Our baby is here..and what a magical girl she is ! We are officially bursting with love- blessed and obsessed PARENTS!!!,” wrote Alia and Ranbir in a post shared on Alia Bhatt’s social media handle.
Black Adam tops box office again on quiet weekend
On a quiet weekend in movie theaters before the upcoming release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Warner Bros. Black Adam topped the box office for the third straight weekend with $18.5 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson’s bid to launch a new DC Films superpower, has surpassed $300 million globally in three weeks of release, including a domestic tally of $137.4 million. That puts the $195 million-budgeted film — the third film this year to lead the box office three consecutive weeks — on a trajectory to likely surpass the $366 million that Shazam! grossed in 2019, but less certain to notch a profit in its theatrical run.

Hindu Mantras Open Commissioners Meeting Of Nevada’s Largest County Nye
RENO, NV- Hindu prayers opened the Board of Commissioners meeting of Nye County, reportedly the thirdlargest county in the contiguous USA, on November one; containing verses from world’s oldest extant scripture. Distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed; wearing a saffron-colored attire, rudraksa mala and tilak on forehead; delivered the invocation from ancient Sanskrit scriptures before Nye County Board of Commissioners, after Chair Frank Carbone introduced him. After Sanskrit delivery, he then read the English interpretation of the prayers. Sanskrit is considered a sacred language in Hinduism and the root language of Indo-European languages.
Zed, who is the President of Universal Society of Hinduism, recited from Rig-Veda, the oldest scripture of the world still in common use; besides lines from Upanishads and BhagavadGita (Song of the Lord), both ancient Hindu scriptures. He started and ended the prayer with “Om”, the mystical syllable containing the universe, which in Hinduism is used to introduce and

LA County Urges Families To File For Expanded Child Tax Credit
LOS ANGELES, CA — For more than 30
years, Gabriela Gomez has been helping families access critical benefits through the LA County Department of Public Social Services.
“People a lot of times don’t know what programs are out there for them that can help them,” Gomez said.
The LA County Department of Public Social Services is encouraging families with little to no income to take advantage of the Expanded Child Tax Credit.
Families can receive up to $3,600 per child under 6 and $3,000 per child ages 6-17.
They can fill out forms online at getctc.org
It’s estimated close to 372,000 children in California are at risk of missing out on benefits because their families did not file income taxes in 2019 or 2020. Because of the pandemic, the child tax credit was significantly expanded in 2021 through the American Rescue Plan. Parents can

now receive $3,600 per child under 6 and $3,000 for children ages 6-17. Previously, it was $2,000 per child, and many lowincome families didn’t qualify.
“If you’ve got a family that’s got 3 kids ages 6-17, that’s $9,000. That is a life-changing lump sum amount for a lot of people,” Gomez said.
It’s money she said can pay for tuition, books, or becoming an entrepreneur.
“You can start a small business with $9,000 or $10,000 and that is something that can
help you move beyond being on public assistance,” Gomez said.
According to the Tax Policy Center, close to 372,000 children in California are at risk of missing out on benefits because their families did not file income taxes in 2019 or 2020.
“We want to make sure that even if they don’t have any income to declare, that they complete the child tax credit forms, the IRS forms, so they can claim that tax credit,” Gomez said.
Those individuals can go to GetCTC. org and use a simplified tax filing tool to claim their benefits, including the third stimulus payment, but it’s only available until Nov. 15. According to the website, it only takes 15 minutes to complete.
“The federal government essentially is like, look, we’re coming out of COVID. There are people that have lost their jobs. There’s inflation, gas prices. Everything is just through the roof, so they want to make sure that families are able to afford the things that they need,” Gomez said.
DHS Begins Limited Implementation Of DACA Under Final Rule
WASHINGTON, DC— On Monday, October 31, 2022, the Department of Homeland Security’s final rule (PDF) to preserve and fortify Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) went into effect. The final rule’s implementation means that DACA is now based on a formal regulation, thereby preserving and fortifying the program while the program remains the subject of litigation in court.
Previously, DACA was based on a policy memorandum that then-DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano issuedon August 15, 2012. Since its inception in 2012, DACA has allowed over 800,000 young people to remain with their families in the only country many of them have ever known and continue to contribute to their communities in the United States. Under the final rule, USCIS will continue
to accept and process applications for deferred action, work authorization, and advance parole for current DACA recipients. Due to ongoing litigation, USCIS will continue to accept but
cannot process initial DACA requests. “This final rule is our effort to preserve and fortify DACA to the fullest extent possible,” said Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas.
“Ultimately, we need Congress to urgently pass legislation that provides Dreamers with the permanent protection they need and deserve.”
“Implementation of the DACA final rule illustrates USCIS’s continued commitment to Dreamers,” said U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Ur M. Jaddou. “While court orders prevent us from adjudicating requests from initial applicants, we will continue to carry on the important work of renewing and continuing protections for current DACA recipients, as outlined in this final rule.” The final rule is a product of careful review that considered the more than 16,000 comments received during the public comment period. It codifies existing DACA policy, with limited changes, and replaces the guidance set forth in the 2012 Napolitano memorandum

Krishnamoorthi congratulated his Republican opponent, Chris Dargis, for running a hard-fought campaign, adding, “I appreciate his service to our country, and I wish him and his family well.”
“My parents came to this country
with little more than a dream for their family’s future and the faith that they could achieve it here in America,” Krishnamoorthi concluded. “And despite some hard times, we did. Now, we need to make sure that those opportunities continue for all of our people, whether they’ve been here for generations, or are relatively new to our shores,” he said.
The race to represent Illinois’ 8th Congressional District was one of 75 “top targets” declared by the National Republican Campaign Committee early in the 2021-2022 election cycle. Although the national Republican Party worked to flip this seat red, Congressman Krishnamoorthi emerged victorious. “Representing this community is the honor of my lifetime,” he said. “I’m not going anywhere.”

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS) The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the validity of the 103rd Constitution amendment providing 10 per cent reservation to economically weaker sections (EWS) in admissions and government jobs. Three out of five judges, which heard the petitions challenging the EWS reservation, upheld the EWS quota.
Justice Dinesh Maheshwari in the judgment said the EWS quota law did not violate the basic structure or equality code for taking into account the economic criterion. He said the EWS reservation does not cause damage to any essential feature of the Constitution by exceeding the 50 per cent ceiling for quota since the ceiling is itself flexible.
Justice Trivedi said she concurred with the judgment passed by Justice Maheshwari. Trivedi said the EWS quota is valid.
Justice Pardiwala also ruled in favour of the EWS quota. However, Chief Justice U.U. Lalit and Justice Bhat dissented with the other three judges on the bench.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today freed three men convicted of raping and torturing a 19-year-old Delhi woman before killing her in 2012, months before the Nirbhaya case. The Delhi High Court had described them as predators trawling the streets for prey. In February 2012, the young woman’s

The death penalty was backed by the Delhi High Court the same year, with the court saying that the convicts were “predators” moving on the streets “looking for prey”.
The three challenged the High Court ruling in Supreme Court, asking that their sentence be reduced. The bench of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justices S Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi cancelled the High Court ruling and said all three would be freed.

Gujarat polls: Jaynarayan Vyas resigns from BJP
Arvind Kejriwal’s Big Claim: “BJP Offered Deal To Spare Ministers”
Arvind Kejriwal said the BJP was worried about losing both the Gujarat elections and the municipal polls in Delhi.
Ahmedabad: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday claimed the BJP had offered him a “deal to spare” his ministers Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain who are embroiled in investigations by central agencies, if the Aam Aadmi Party pulled out of next month’s Gujarat elections.
Former Gujarat minister and veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Jaynarayan Vyas on Saturday resigned from the ruling party citing personal reasons ahead of the Assembly elections next month.
A Gujarat Congress leader said Vyas is likely to join the grand old party. However, Vyas has kept the cards close to his chest so far.
Vyas, 75, had recently met former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, the Congress leader said.
In his resignation letter to state BJP president C R Paatil, Vyas said, “I have been actively serving the BJP for the last three decades as per the ideology of the party. I am today resigning from the party for personal reasons.”

Pakistan Pummel New Zealand By 7 Wickets To Enter 3rd T20 World Cup
Sydney, : (IANS) After storming into the final of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam on Wednesday lauded Shaheen Shah Afridi for setting the tone with the ball in the semifinal against New Zealand, adding that the fast bowler is improving day by day after his injury layoff and using his experience well.
Coming back from injury in the buildup to the T20 World Cup, Shaheen continues to go from strength to strength, and looms as a pivotal figure in Pakistan’s trophy hopes. The leftarmer was at his brilliant best in spite of a docile Sydney Cricket Ground surface, taking the wicket of Finn Allen up front in the first over, before returning to outfox Kane Williamson with a cunning slower ball.
The 22-year-old finished with 2/24 from his allotment, moving to ten wickets for the tournament, joining Shadab Khan as the most prolific in Pakistan’s campaign in Australia.
“He (Shaheen) set the tone. After the
injury, day by day he’s improving because you see him playing for the team and performing after the injury,” said Babar at the post-match press conference.
“He had a little bit of time (to recover). He has really been using our experience and now everyone knows he’s the best bowler in Pakistan and in the world, so we know he’s bowling and he’s doing fine out there,” he added.
Pakistan were better in all three facets against the Kiwis, punching their ticket to Melbourne on Sunday, the first T20 World Cup final appearance since they won the tournament in 2009.
A journey with the up-and-down parallels of the Cricket World Cup campaign their forefathers had in 1992, Babar does not play down the significance of their 50/50 shot of a tournament win.
Virat Kohli wins ICC Player of Month Award for October 2022
India star Virat Kohli won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Player of the Month Award for October 2022 for his exploits in the T20 World Cup 2022. Kohli won the honour after having been nominated for the new award for the first time in his career. The former India captain pipped the likes of David Miller of South Africa and Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe for the top prize.
“It is a great honour for me to have been voted the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for October. Being chosen as the standout player by fans across the globe as well as the panel makes this accolade even more special for me,” Kohli said, as quoted by the ICC.
I would like to play against India in final: Pakistan Mentor Matthew Hayden
Pakistan team mentor Matthew Hayden wants to play the World Cup final against India purely for the sake of “big spectacle”. An India-Pakistan clash generates much interest, mostly to the level of obsession, which was evident in the Group stage when Virat Kohli earned plaudits for orchestrating his team’s much talked-about victory under pressure.
Pakistan stormed into the final with a comfortable sevenwicket win over New Zealand and now await the winner of the second semifinal between India and England. “I would like to play India in the final purely because of the big spectacle,” he said when asked which opponent he will choose for the final.
Pakistan were on the verge of an early exit after defeats against India and Zimbabwe but luck smiled on them when Netherlands knocked South Africa out of the tournament to open up an opportunity for Pakistan. Babar Azam’s side then beat Bangladesh to qualify for the semifinal.
“Could be a truer surface and nicer batting track in Melbourne. Sky is the limit. You can never beat down class. Both these guys (Babar, Rizwan) have done it for a number of years. I’ve practiced scoop shots a lot when I used to play rubber-ball cricket: Suryakumar Yadav
Former cricketers are gushing about his strokeplay, with Sunil Gavaskar calling him a ‘Mr 360 cricketer’, while former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram said ‘he is from a different planet.’
“I have practised that stroke a lot when I used to play rubber-ball cricket,” Suryakumar Yadav told Star Sports.
The 32-year-old was given Man Of the Match for his knock. Some of his shots in the innings were jaw-dropping to watch when asked about his scoop shots he said “You got to understand what the bowler is going to bowl at that time, which is a little pre-determined at that moment.” The player when asked about handling pressure further said how he tries to hit the gaps and run as hard as possible. SKY further said “If you have to bat with Virat Bhai then you have to run hard as well. But I try and do that, hit it in the gaps and run hard” Surya Kumar Yadav has become the second player in the history of T20Is to score 1000 runs in a calendar year after Pakistan’s Mohamad Rizwan.

Only One Mr.360’: Sky
‘There’s
Exercise has both direct and indirect benefits in reducing heart disease risk. It helps control most modifiable risk factors apart from lowering your blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol and body weight. Besides these, exercise has a direct effect on the functioning of the heart and allows it to work more efficiently over a longer period of time. With regular exercise, your heart rate at rest is reduced but the amount of blood pumped during each beat actually increases. In simple words, your heart pumps more efficiently. Besides this, regular exercise causes your blood to become “less sticky”, which is beneficial in preventing a clot (thrombus), a major trigger of a heart attack. It also modifies the release of some hormones such as adrenaline and conditions your heart to better deal with emergencies arising out of abnormal heart rhythms. Since “exercise is medicine”, the amount of exercise recommended should be called the exercise prescription. Many patients after a heart attack or surgery are extremely deconditioned. This is a combination of the actual heart ailment as well as the prolonged bed rest that often accompanies it. In addition, the disease tends to have a huge psychological burden, which tends to have physical manifestations. After a cardiac event, the first few weeks should be focussed on gradually getting you back on your feet and ideally should be done in a cardiac rehabilitation programme.
Build it up gradually
The goal is to achieve 30-60 minutes of exercise per day but that does not mean you need to achieve it on day one. In fact, that would be the wrong thing to do. After you have been discharged from the hospital, start with walking for five to 10 minutes, four times a day. Each week, increase the time by five to 10 minutes. When you are able to walk 20 minutes at a stretch, you can reduce the frequency
The internet throws up many trends about drinking jeera water in the morning that may help in melting that stubborn layer of visceral fat that we all deal with, namely belly fat. But truth be told, jeera water improves the overall state of your gut health and boosts metabolism, which actually contribute to overall weight loss by busting fat-buildup. So, it is certainly an enabler, though not the only miracle drink that works.
Says Diksha Dayal, Head of the Department, Nutrition and Dietetics, Sanar International Hospitals, Gurgaon, “I think much of the virtues of jeera water in fat reduction have to do with its digestive properties that lead to a well-oiled stomach functioning and a boost in metabolism. A glass of jeera water in the morning can stimulate the production of enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, glucose and fats. This enhances your metabolism and prevents indigestion. And in the long run, this enhanced metabolism stops fat accumulation.”
She also lists its anti-inflammatory properties that power digestion. “The thymoquinone in jeera protects the liver. It activates the pancreas to produce enzymes and bile, promoting digestion. Better digestion is directly responsible for reducing belly fat,” says Dayal.
Further jeera water controls diabetes that usually leads to increase in body weight.
Had a bypass surgery or stenting? How can a heart patient get back to exercise?
There is no defined limit to the amount of exercise you can do with heart disease but at the same time, it’s important to discuss your case with your doctor and listen to your body. Your programme should include a pre-exercise medical evaluation, graded exercise test and a specific exercise prescription, tailored for you. High-risk individuals need continuous heart rate monitoring, says Dr Aashish Contractor, Director, Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, Mumbai
to twice a day, and when you reach 3060 minutes, once a day is good enough. After a heart ailment, you should take you about six weeks to reach this goal. As you achieve this, it is important to add strength training to your routine, for maximum health benefits.
Special precautions
While exercising you need to be particularly aware of any symptoms such as angina or shortness of breath. It’s important to remember that any discomfort in the upper part of the body,
from navel to nose, which increases with exertion, should be viewed as angina, unless proven otherwise. If you do notice angina, unusual shortness of breath or fatigue with exercise, then you need to stop exercising and seek the advice of your doctor before continuing with exercise. We have all heard the phrase “no pain, no gain”, but this is absolutely not true when it comes to heart disease and exercise. There is no defined limit to the amount of exercise you can do with heart disease but at the same time, it’s important to
discuss your case with your doctor and listen to your body. Your programme should include a pre-exercise medical evaluation, graded exercise test and a specific exercise prescription, tailored for you. High-risk individuals need closer supervision and continuous heart rate monitoring. All patients should be encouraged to enrol in a formal cardiac rehabilitation programme. A lifetime of moderate intensity exercise, which is sustainable and enjoyable, will yield the best results in terms of both quality and quantity of life.
of warmth or Pita, which encompasses the functioning of our enzymes, insulin and hormones. Then there is the system of control which keeps the two other energy systems in balance. This third factor is called the Kapha. Jeera affects both the systems of activity and control, that is Vata and Kapha, more dominantly the latter.”
Can jeera water reduce belly fat?
“If you have it in the morning, it stimulates the production of insulin in the body and decreases the levels of glycosylated haemoglobin,” says Dayal. “Further it is rich in iron, which is an essential element for the formation of haemoglobin in the blood required for transport of oxygen,” she adds.
In the ayurvedic knowledge system,
jeera is considered one of the many foods for preventing obesity. Says Dr Subhash Markande, consultant Ayurvedic physician at CGH Earth’s SwaSwara clinic, Gokarna, “There are three systems in Ayurveda that one has to factor in. First is the system of activity, which we call Vata, where the entire energy is about activities and movements in cells. There’s a system
Obesity is a result of the pileup of postdigestive cellular waste in our body. What is fat but unwanted digestive waste. Jeera clears this waste by breaking the fat molecules present between the cells. Jeera, by smoothening digestion, assimilation and absorption of nutrients, blocks the generation of body waste. In the process, it prevents malabsorption of what we do not need.” Jeera is hot in potency, so generates warmth, and is a bit dry in nature. “With these features, it supports body metabolism,” says Dr Markande. Besides, jeera has multifarious uses that keep the body well-oiled. “It is an appetiser, anti-fungal, an analgesic, detoxifies the uterus, cleanses your palate by interacting with saliva. Jeera with jaggery is good for fighting gas,” says Dr Markande. So what’s the best way to have jeera water? “Though people prefer to have it in the morning, it can be had at any time of the day. You can even have it with the food itself, taking sips of jeera water in between to prevent manufacturing of fat. It is best had parboiled but you can have it warm or cold depending on the season,” adds he.
