Democrats in Senate majority
Senator Raphael Warnock defeated his Republican challenger, Herschel Walker, in a runoff election that capped a gruelling and costly campaign, secured a 51-seat Democratic majority and gave the first Black senator from Georgia a full six-year term. Warnock’s victory was called by The Associated Press late on Tuesday evening as the senator’s lead was expanding to 51 per cent compared with Walker’s 49 per cent. It ended a marathon midterm election cycle in which Democrats defied history, as they limited the loss of House seats that typically greets the party that holds the White House and now gain a seat in the Senate.

Musk launches govtfocused satellite internet service called Starshield
San Francisco: (IANS) Elon Musk-run SpaceX has announced a new government-focused satellite internet service called Starshield with a focus on “national security”.
Starshield leverages SpaceX’s Starlink technology and launch capability to support national security efforts, the company said on its website.
While Starlink is designed for consumer and commercial use, Starshield is designed for government use, with an initial focus on three areas: Earth observation, communications and hosted payloads.
SpaceX said that Starshield will launch satellites with sensing payloads and deliver processed data directly to the user. “Starshield provides assured global communications to government users with Starshield user equipment and builds satellite buses to support the most demanding customer payload missions,” it further informed.
Starlink already offers end-to-end user data encryption and Starshield will use “additional high-assurance cryptographic capability to host classified payloads and process data securely, meeting the most demanding government requirements”. The company said that Starlink’s inter-satellite laser communications terminal, which is the only communications laser operating at scale in orbit today, can be integrated onto partner satellites to enable incorporation into the Starshield network.
Turkish FM urges US to finalise F-16 sale ‘as soon as possible’
Jury: Trump company guilty of tax fraud
An 18-year-old college student in the state of Arkansas has reportedly become the youngest black mayor to be elected in the US.
Jaylen Smith just left high school in May. On Tuesday, he was voted in to lead the rural town of Earle, 30 miles (48km) west of Memphis, Tennessee. He’s not the first 18-year-old mayor in US history, but that hasn’t stopped his family celebrating the major win.
Ankara: (IANS)
Cavusoglu made the remarks at a joint press conference in Istanbul with visiting Moldovian Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu, in response to the latest US Congressional agreement to remove restrictive conditions in the final text of the defence budget on the sale of F-16s to Turkey, reports Xinhua news agency. Turkey, aiming to bolster its airforce with 40 F-16 jets, has been adamant in its opposition to any conditions which included a ban on using the jets for “unauthorized overflights”.
Cavusoglu noted that the presence of any condition nullifies the benefits of acquiring the jets. “The absence of a negative element is a positive development ... That is in everyone’s interest,” said the Turkish foreign minister. Ankara said earlier that it would consider alternatives including Russia if the F-16 purchase deal fails to follow through.
The Trump Organisation, the family real estate business that made Donald J. Trump a billionaire and propelled him from reality television to the White House, was convicted on Tuesday of tax fraud and other crimes, forever tarring the former President and the company that bears his name.
The conviction on all 17 counts, after more than a day of jury deliberations in the State Supreme Court in Manhattan, stemmed from the company’s practice of doling out off-the-books perks to executives: They received luxury apartments, leased MercedesBenzes, extra cash at Christmas, even free cable television. They paid taxes on none of it.
Biden attends gun violence vigil
Washington,: (IANS) Just a week before the 10th anniversary of the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting that claimed the lives of 20 children and six teachers, US President Joe Biden attended a national vigil for victims of gun violence. Wednesday night’s vigil at the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill, sponsored by the Newtown Action Alliance Foundation, has occurred every year since the December 14, 2012 carnage, which remains one of the deadliest school shootings in US history, reports Xinhua news agency.
New York Times faces first major walkout since 1970s
The New York Times is facing its first major work stoppage since the 1970s, after staff demanding better pay and benefits declared a 24-hour walkout The firm said it was disappointed by the decision but was prepared to serve readers “without disruption”.
The stand-off comes at a time of heightened labour unrest in the US, as the cost of living continues to rise.
Union members say the company can afford their demands, despite challenges in the wider news business.

At the end of 2021, the New York Times employed about 5,000 people, including more than 2,000 in journalism operations.
The union said it would leave some departments with nearly no one at work - though some units will be less affected.
International staff, for example, are not part of the union, which means the World Cup coverage that has been dominating sports news is unaffected, Mr Draper said.

Germany arrests 25 suspected of planning to overthrow government
This was the latest of a series of plots discovered in recent years of extremist networks preparing for a day the democratic order collapses, a day they call Day X.
A man named as Heinrich XIII, from an old aristocratic family, is alleged to have been central to their plans. According to federal prosecutors, he is one of two alleged ringleaders among those arrested across 11 German states.

Twenty-five people have been arrested in raids across Germany on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government.
The group of far-right and ex-military figures are said to have prepared for a “Day X” to storm the Reichstag parliament building and seize power.
Peru gets 1st female President after dramatic impeachment
Lima,: (IANS) Peru’s Vice President Dina Boluarte has become the country’s first female President after she was sworn in following the impeachment of former President Pedro Castillo for alleged “permanent moral incapacity”. Boluarte was sworn in on Wednesday shortly after Congress dismissed Castillo with 101 votes in favour, six against and 10 abstentions, reports Xinhua news agency. This was the third impeachment proceedings against him since he came to office in July 2021.
The former President has been detained after he had said earlier in the day that he was replacing Congress with an “exceptional emergency government”, Peru’s National Police (PNP) confirmed.
EU new sanctions target Russia’s armed forces, drone supply
Brussels, Dec 8 (IANS) The European Commission has proposed the ninth package of sanctions against Russia that will include nearly 200 individuals and entities and cut Russia’s access to drones.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Wednesday in a statement that the eight packages of sanctions introduced so far were “biting hard” but the Commission was “stepping up the pressure on Russia”. The ninth package proposes adding nearly 200 additional individuals and entities to the sanctions list, including the Russian armed forces, as well as individual officers and defence industrial companies, among others. It also proposed sanctions against three additional Russian banks, including a full transaction ban on the Russian Regional Development Bank, Xinhua news agency reported.
The plotters are said to include members of the extremist Reichsbürger [Citizens of the Reich] movement, which has long been in the sights of German police over violent attacks and racist and antisemitic conspiracy theories. They also refuse to recognise the modern German state. Other suspects came from the QAnon movement who believe their country is in the hands of a mythical “deep state” involving secret powers pulling the political strings.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser assured Germans that authorities would respond with the full force of the law “against the enemies of democracy”.
Finland introduces new ways to monitor Covid deaths
Helsinki, Dec 8 (IANS) Finland is set to change its method of collecting data of deaths caused by Covid from Thursday onwards, to make the information more accurate and uniform throughout the country.
The reporting of Covid-19 deaths will be based on the causes of death, not on the temporal connection between infection and death, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) said. Reporting will be harmonised with regard to which patients are in hospital with Covid-19, and which are due to the virus, reports Xinhua news agency.
In Finland, since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, deaths that have occurred within 30 days of confirmed Covid-19 infection have been monitored.
The Taliban administration on Wednesday put to death a man accused of murder in western Afghanistan, its spokesperson said, in the first officially confirmed public execution since the group took over the country last year.
The execution in western Farah province was of a man accused of stabbing another man to death in 2017, Taliban spokesperson
Zabihullah Mujahid said and was attended by senior officials of the group.
The case was investigated by three courts and authorised by the group’s supreme spiritual leader, who is based in southern Kandahar province, said Mujahid. He did not say how the man was executed.

New York: (IANS) An Indian-origin entrepreneur, who lost $2 million after FTX went kaput last month, is taking legal action against the cryptocurrency exchange’s founder, according to a report.
Delhi-born Evan Singh Luthra, 27, first invested in crypto with FTX in 2020. He told Fox Business that a legal team representing him is currently pursuing legal action against FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) for his alleged wire fraud. “This was a con. Sam BankmanFried is a fraud. He committed fraud,” Evan Singh Luthra said on Fox’s “Mornings with Maria”. “You would not have expected this to turn out the way it has happened. So this was not a risk I was taking when I was investing, this was somebody like Sam Bankman-Fried who committed a crime.”
Putin: Nuclear risk is rising, but we are not mad
Vladimir Putin has said the threat of a nuclear war was rising, but insisted Russia had not “gone mad” and would not use its nuclear weapons first. The Russian president insisted that his country would only use weapons of mass destruction in response to an attack. Speaking at Russia’s annual human rights council meeting, he also said the war in Ukraine could be a “lengthy
process”.
Western officials believe Putin initially planned for a rapid victory.Russia’s capacity to use nuclear weapons has come under increased scrutiny since it invaded Ukraine in February. “Such a threat is growing, it would be wrong to hide it,” Putin warned while talking about the prospect of nuclear war via video link from Moscow.
The Chinese government announced on Wednesday a broad easing of its exceptionally stringent Covid restrictions, an implicit concession to public discontent after mass street protests in more than a dozen cities a week ago challenged Beijing’s authority. The changes are not a complete dismantling of China’s “zero Covid” policy, but still represent a considerable loosening of measures that have dragged down the economy by disrupting daily life for hundreds of millions of people.

BJP Sets Gujarat Record Congress wins In Himachal

Stolen Data Of 600,000 Indians Sold On Bot Markets: Report
BJP raced to its best-ever result in Gujarat, with the AAP cutting into Congress votes, as votes were counted today in two states. In Himachal Pradesh, the Congress is leading and Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has conceded the BJP’s defeat
The BJP is ahead in 158 seats in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state. The Congress, which delivered a strong performance in the last election, is leading in 16 seats -- about 60 down from its 2017 tally.
Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP, which was eyeing a big entry into the Gujarat political landscape with this election, is ahead in five seats. Gujarat has 182 seats and the majority mark stands at 92.
In Himachal Pradesh, which has 68 seats, the BJP took an early lead but the Congress overtook it after an hour of counting. Currently, the Congress is leading in 39 seats, but incumbent Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has accepted defeat and said they will “continue to play a positive role”. The BJP may well register the best-ever poll score in Gujarat Assembly elections. The record was earlier held by the Congress, which won 149 seats in the 1985 state polls. Led by PM Modi, the BJP had campaigned in the western state with all its might and star power. The Prime Minister held over 30 rallies after the elections were announced.
Incumbent Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is set for a massive win in his constituency Ghatlodia in Ahmedabad,
Bengaluru: Around five million people globally have had their data stolen and sold on the bot market till date, of which 600,000 are from India, making it the worst affected country, according to one of the world’s largest VPN serice providers NordVPN. Bot markets are used by hackers to sell stolen data from victims’ devices with bot malware.
The study by NordVPN, of Lithuania’s Nord Security, said the stolen data included user logins, cookies, digital fingerprints, screenshots and other information, with the average price for the digital identity of a person pegged at 490 Indian rupees($5.95).
NordVPN tracked data for the past four years, ever since bot markets were launched in 2018. A week after the ransomware attack on AIIMS, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) faced around 6,000 hacking attempts within 24 hours on Nov. 30, Times of India reported.
Shimla: (IANS) Admitting that the Assembly polls was neck and neck between the BJP and the Congress with a victory margin on at least 11 seats less than 1,000 votes, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Thursday said that he was going to submit his resignation to the Governor. Setting aside rumours of horse-trading to stake claim to form the government, plain speaking Thakur, who retained his Seraj Assembly seat for the sixth consecutive term.
leading by a margin of about 1.34 lakh votes as per the latest trends. Home Minister Amit Shah has earlier said Mr Patel would return as Chief Minister if the BJP posted another victory in its stronghold.
In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP had been banking on the achievements of PM Modi for a smooth transition to a second term, even though the state diligently swings between the BJP and the Congress every five years.
The message to Himachal Pradesh was of central development, with PM Modi flagging off a Vande Bharat Express ahead of elections and opening a new AIIMS at Bilaspur. In many party hoardings, Chief Minister Jairam Thakur was missing.
AAP practically dropped out of the race in Himachal to focus its energies in Gujarat and Delhi. In Gujarat, Mr Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held multiple rallies -- neck and neck with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As a counter to the BJP’s “Phir ek baar Modi Sarkaar” (Another term or Modi government), it has raised the slogan of “parivartan (change).
Even if AAP does not manage a double-digit tally, its foothold in Gujarat is expected to bring a change in the binary politics of Gujarat and present the BJP with a more persistent and strategic opponent than the Congress. Party leaders have already said that this election marks the beginning of AAP’s journey as a national party.
SP wins Mainpuri, Khatauli goes to RLD and BJP gets Rampur
‘Gujarat rejected politics of revadi’
Lucknow, : (IANS) The Samajwadi Party on Thursday scored a major victory when it retained the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat and wrested the Khatauli Assembly seat from the BJP. The BJP won the Rampur Assembly seat.
SP candidate Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri seat with a margin of 2.9 lakh votes, defeating Raghuraj Shakya of the BJP. The Mainpuri victory is doubly significant for Akhilesh Yadav since it retaining the family seat.
Senior BJP leader and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday said the people of Gujarat have given an unprecedented mandate to the party by rejecting those who do politics of hollow promises, freebies and appeasement. In a series of tweets, Shah said he salutes the people of Gujarat on this historic victory and it shows the “unwavering faith of the public in Narendra Modi’s development model”. The minister said this massive victory has shown that every section, be it women, youth or farmers, is wholeheartedly with the BJP.

I-T searches at premises of real estate developer in Hyderabad
Hyderabad,: (IANS) The Income Tax (IT) department officials were on Tuesday conducting searches on the premises of leading real estate developer Vamsiram Builders.
The I-T sleuths were carrying out simultaneous searches in Hyderabad and at Vijayawada and Nellore in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
About 20 teams of the I-T officials began the searches at the houses and offices of the CEO, managing director, directors, partners and investors early Tuesday. The searches were on at the offices of the top executive of the company in upscale Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. The officials were checking records following complaints of alleged tax evasion. Personnel of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were also deployed to provide protection to the I-T officials.
The searches are likely to continue throughout the day and may even extend to Wednesday.
The accused have been booked under Section 370 (buying or disposing of any person as a slave) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act at four police stations in Cyberabad. Earlier, 40 cases were registered against the 15 organisers at Cyberabad and Hyderabad Commissionerates and in most cases, they were absconding. Fearing poaching, Cong MLAs in Himachal to be shifted: Sources
After crossing the halfway mark in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress leadership on Thursday deputed senior leaders to keep the flock together amid poaching fears.
It also plans to shift the MLAS to Rajasthan via Chandigarh. According to sources, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is personally monitoring the situation. She has deputed Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda for the purpose, while state Incharge of the state Rajeev Shukla is in the process of talking to each elected MLA personally.
The Congress on Thursday was leading the initial vote count in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls.

New Delhi: (IANS) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi skipped the Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra campaigned for the party which has yielded good results. The party is on the verge of forming the government in the state with leads in 38 seats.
Bengaluru: Rejoicing over the BJP’s landslide victory in Gujarat, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the election results there will have a positive effect on the party’s prospects in poll-bound Karnataka. He was reacting to the Gujarat election results where the BJP won to retain power for a seventh straight term and its effect on Karnataka Assembly elections, which is less than five months away. “This election result will have a positive effect on the Karnataka elections as well. It will be a major morale booster for the BJP cadre and supporters. Our victory is guaranteed if we work with more vigour,” Mr. Bommai told reporters here.
BJP’s Rivaba Jadeja,
Wins Gujarat Seat
New Delhi: (IANS) Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Thursday claimed that Gujarat Assembly polls will elevate Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to the national level.
“Through the votes of Gujarat, AAP is becoming national party. For the first time, politics based on education and health is getting recognition in the country. Congratulations to the people
of India”, Sisodia said in a tweet. However, the early trends of vote counting indicates the saffron party is on course for its best-ever performance in Gujarat by leading in 144 Assembly seats while the main challenger Congress is far behind with a lead in only 20 seats. Meanwhile, the AAP which had launched an aggressive campaign to make it a three-cornered contest for the first time in Gujarat, is leading in six seats. With AAP’s government in Delhi and Punjab, the party has achieved the status of state party and the fate of becoming the national party depends on Gujarat Assembly Election Results 2022. A political party needs to be recognised in at least four states to become a national party. To be recognised as a party in the state, it needs to win at least two seats and 6 per cent of votes.
The Congress General Secretary failed miserably in Uttar Pradesh, but has outperformed the BJP in the hill state which changes governments after every five years. Priyanka Gandhi addressed several rallies and held roadshows in the state. Her pick, Rajeev Shukla was made the in-charge of Himachal Pradesh and along with him micromanaged the show as the party was going into election for the first time after the demise of stalwart like Virbhadra Singh. The Congress on Thursday was leading on 38 seats in the initial vote count. It crossed the half-way mark and was leading in 38 seats at around 1 p.m.
In More Trouble, Congress May Lose Leader Of Opposition In Gujarat
Ahmedabad: The Congress will close 2022 with a handful of problems in Gujarat, where it managed to win only 16 seats in the assembly, as the party is likely to lose the post of the Leader of Opposition.
Gujarat’s assembly has 182 seats and a party needs at least 10 per cent strength to send a Leader of Opposition, or LoP. The Congress with its worst ever performance in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state doesn’t have the numbers needed to appoint a LoP.
New Delhi: Rivaba Jadeja, the wife of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, and the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate from the Jamnagar North constituency in the Gujarat Assembly elections, has won with over 57 per cent vote share. Aam Aadmi Party’s Karshanbhai Karmur, with 23 per cent votes, was her closest competitor, and Bipendrasinh Chatursinh Jadeja from Congress came third with 15.5 per cent votes.
In the centre too, the Congress couldn’t send a LoP after two national elections, one in 2014 and the other in 2019, as it won only 44 and 52 seats, respectively. It tried to make Mallikarjun Kharge the LoP, but the then Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan blocked the attempt, citing rules. A party needs 55 seats to send a LoP in parliament.
Mr Kharge is the first Congress chief who is not from the Gandhi family in two decades.
In the first term of the Modi government that began in 2014, Mr Kharge was invited to meetings of a panel to appoint the anti-corruption body Lokpal. But he turned down the invitation in protest against not getting the LoP’s post. The Congress had also done the same with the opposition back in 1980 and 1984, when the LoP post was not given to any party after the Congress won with massive numbers in the national elections.

Actor Paresh Rawal Apologises
AIIMS unprecented data breach sparks fears hackers could misuse information
The serpentine queues that once started at 6 am outside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are now forming well before dawn. The hospital’s computer systems have been down for 10 days and all patients have to be registered in the old-fashioned way, using pen and paper. “We are seeing huge lines outside OPDs and in every department,” says a senior doctor, adding: “The logistics of working without the server are bad.”
New Delhi: Actor Paresh Rawal, campaigning in Gujarat for the BJP, has landed in a controversy with his comments on Bengalis. At a rally, he said the people of Gujarat would tolerate inflation but not “Bangladeshis and Rohingya” next door. Facing a huge backlash, he apologised today.
“Gas cylinders are expensive, but their price will come down. People will get employment too. But what will happen if Rohingya migrants and Bangladeshis start living around you, like in Delhi? What will you do with gas cylinders? Cook fish for the Bengalis?” Paresh Rawal said on Tuesday in Valsad, which voted in the first phase of the Gujarat election yesterday.

The Presidency will bring the curtains down on India’s twoyear tenure as elected non-permanent member of the powerful UN organ. This week, technicians managed to restore some of the systems – including the e-data – but the network is being “sanitised” so that services can be restored, AIIMS said. The sanitisation “process is taking some time due to the volume of data and the large number of servers/computers for the hospital services,” the hospital said.
The people whose data has been exposed could include many of the country’s top political figures for whom AIIMS is often a first stop if they fall sick. RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav spent a long stretch there recently. At another level, patient confidentiality could also take a hit. Says a doctor: “Confidentiality is another aspect.

Indian-American model calls Varanasi ‘scariest city’; slammed
The Supreme Court Friday quashed the Kerala High Court order granting anticipatory bail to four people, including a former Director General of Police (DGP), in a case of alleged frame-up of scientist Nambi Narayanan in the 1994 ISRO espionage matter.
A bench of Justices M R Shah and C T Ravikumar remanded the matter back to the high court and directed it to decide the issue within four weeks.
“All these appeals allowed. Impugned orders granting anticipatory bail passed by HC are quashed and set aside. All matters are remitted back to the HC to be decided afresh on it own merits. This court had not observed anything on merits for either of the parties.
“It is ultimately for the HC to pass orders. We request the HC to decide the anticipatory bail applications at the earliest preferably within four weeks from date of this order,” the bench said.
Sidhu Moose Wala Murder Mastermind Goldy Brar Detained In US
A member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Goldy Brar had recently moved to the US from Canada claiming he was under tremendous danger after the murder of the singer in May.
New York, Dec 2 (IANS) An IndianAmerican model and social media influencer, whose family hails from Lucknow, has apologised after being slammed for calling Varanasi ‘scariest city’ in her TikTok video.
New Delhi: Gangster Goldy Brar, allegedly the mastermind behind Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s murder in May, has been detained in the US, sources have told NDTV. A member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, Goldy Brar had recently moved to the US from Canada, where he was based since 2017.
The gangster was detained in California around November 20, the sources said, adding that the Indian government is yet to receive any official statement
from California. Brar, who owned Moose Wala’s murder in a Facebook post, moved to the US reportedly under pressure.
He had been living in Fresno city and had cities like Sacramento, Frizow, and Salt Lake as his safe house.
India’s spy agency Research And Analysis Wing (R&AW), the intelligence wing of Delhi Police, and their counterparts in Punjab are learned to have received inputs that Goldy Brar’s arrest has caused a big stir in California.
Atlanta-based Aparna Singh was in the city, which is regarded as India’s spiritual capital, on a business trip to meet manufacturers behind her jewellery brand, Indian Goddess Boutique, The New York Post reported. On her trip, she shot a TikTok video titled, ‘Scariest city I ever visited: Varanasi, India’, which received comments from almost 10,000 people with many asking her to “travel with an open mind”.
A barrage of criticism forced her to share another clip in which she apologised for coming across as “disrespectful”.

India Could Soon Experience Heat Waves Beyond Human Survival Limit: World Bank
HiIndia Newsdesk
Thiruvananthapuram: Severe heat waves, responsible for thousands of deaths across India over the last few decades, are increasing with alarming frequency and soon the country could become one of the first places in the world to experience heat waves that break the human survivability limit, according to a new report.
The World Bank report titled “Climate Investment Opportunities in India’s Cooling Sector” said the country is experiencing higher temperatures that arrive earlier and stay far longer.
“In April 2022, India was plunged into the grip of a punishing early spring heat wave that brought the country to a standstill, with temperatures in the capital, New Delhi, topping 46 degrees Celsius (oC) (114 degrees Fahrenheit). The month of March, which witnessed extraordinary spikes in temperatures, was the hottest ever recorded”, it said.
The report will be released during the two-day “India Climate and Development Partners’ Meet” being organised by World Bank in partnership with the Kerala government.
Predicting that heat waves situation in India could break the human survivability limit, it said the recent heat wave supports what many climate scientists have long cautioned about with reference to rising temperatures across South Asia.
“In August 2021, the Sixth Assessment Report of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that the Indian subcontinent would suffer more frequent and intense heat waves over the coming decade.
Universities in the UK are paying education agents that recruit Indian students to lure them with an offer, which allows them to bring along their families to the country, a media report said.
HiIndia Newsdesk
London: (IANS) Universities in the UK are paying education agents that recruit Indian students to lure them with an offer, which allows them to bring along their families to the country, a media report said.
According to the Telegraph, commissions are paid to agents who market “graduate visas” and help potential Indian students get visas for their spouses and children.
A graduate visa, previously known as the
“The G20 Climate Risk Atlas also warned in 2021 that heat waves across India were likely to last 25 times longer by 2036-65 if carbon emissions remain high, as in the IPCC’s worst-case emission scenario,” the report said.
It also warned that rising heat across India can jeopardize economic productivity.
“Up to 75 percent of India’s workforce, or 380 million people, depend on heat-exposed labor, at times working in potentially life-threatening temperatures. ...By 2030, India may account for 34 million of the projected 80 million global job losses from heat stress associated productivity decline”,
the report said.
It further said India showed the largest heat exposure impacts on heavy labor among South Asian countries, with more than 101 billion hours lost a year. Analysis by global management consulting firm, McKinsey & Company shows that lost labor from rising heat and humidity could put up to 4.5 per cent of India’s GDP- approximately USD 150-250 billion - at risk by the end of this decade.
It said India’s long-term food security and public health security will depend on a reliable cold chain network. Transporting food and pharmaceutical goods across India requires a system of cold chain refrigeration that works
every step of the way.
“A single temperature lapse in the journey can break the cold chain, spoiling fresh produce and weakening the potency of vaccines. With only 4 per cent of fresh produce in India covered by cold chain facilities, annual estimated food losses total USD 13 billion”, it said.
It also noted that the third largest producer of pharmaceuticals in the world, pre-COVID-19, India lost approximately 20 percent of temperature-sensitive medical products and 25 percent of vaccines due to broken cold chains, leading to losses of USD 313 million a year.
“As temperatures rise across India, so will the demand for cooling. However, in a country where two-thirds of the population live on less than USD 2 a day, and where the average cost of an air-conditioning unit can vary between USD 260 and USD 500, air-cooling systems are a luxury available only to a few.” According to analysis presented in the India Cooling Action Plan (ICAP), only eight per cent of Indian households own air-conditioning units.
“Indoor and electric fans can help to maintain thermal comfort, but these too are expensive to buy and inefficient. As a result, many poor and marginalized communities across India are more vulnerable to extreme heat, living in inadequately ventilated, hot and crowded homes without proper access to cooling”, the report warned.
Staying cool during extreme heat is about more than just comfort - it can constitute the precarious line between life and death, it added.
UK univs luring Indian students with ‘bring your family’ offers: Report
warn that the restrictions will bankrupt UK universities, which depend on foreign students for money.
The British High Commission revealed recently that it granted 1.27 lakh student visas to Indians in the year ending September 2022, an increase of 273 per cent over the same period in 2019.
According to reports, India surpassed China to become the largest source of students for the UK with 161,000 students, including 33,240 dependents, coming to the UK last year.
post-study visa, gives one permission to stay in the UK for at least two years after successfully completing a course in the country.
Indians received 41 per cent of the total number of Graduate Route visas after it was introduced in 2021, according to recent UK immigration statistics.
While some agents come up with offers assuring a “full-time job” for a spouse as well as a two-year “stay” in the country, others tell prospective students to hurry
as the UK could soon put restrictions on dependents.
The report comes as immigration situation in the country is becoming a migraine for the Conservative partyled government with net migration numbers rising to an estimated record of 504,000 in the year to June.
While ministers are considering curbs on the number of dependents allowed into the UK and restricting foreign students attending “low-quality” courses, experts
New Way Consultancy (NWC) says it works for more than 70 universities and is paid on commission for each student it recruits, the Telegraph reported.
NWC said that foreign students and their dependents contributed to the UK economy not just through fees of 10,000 pounds to 26,000 pounds but also via an NHS surcharge of 400 pounds a year for the student and 600 pounds for a dependent.
“International students are not migrants, they never stay here,” Moe Sobahan, NWC’s recruitment head told Telegraph.

Facing flak from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over his “Ravan” jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has accused the ruling party of misusing his remarks for electoral gains in Gujarat, and said that politics is not about individuals but policies.
In his first reaction over the controversy, Kharge told PTI that he believes in “performance politics”, but the BJP’s style of politics often lacks the spirit of democracy as “they make it about one person only, who is everywhere”. On the AAP’s prospects in the ongoing Gujarat elections, he alleged that it was working at somebody’s behest “to divide the Congress’s votes.” Asked whether personal attacks, such as his own “Ravan” jibe, have become a key feature of the campaign, Kharge said, “They are misusing it for electoral gains.”
“For us, politics is not about individuals. It is about policies, it is about their (BJP’s) performance, and it is about the type of politics they practice. They make it about only one person, who is everywhere,” the veteran Congress leader said.
Biden will support ‘dear friend’ Modi during India’s G-20 Presidency
US President Joe Biden said on Friday that he is looking forward to “supporting my dear friend” Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Indias G-20 Presidency.
Washington, Dec 2 (IANS) US President Joe Biden said on Friday that he is looking forward to “supporting my dear friend” Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Indias G-20 Presidency.
India assumed the rotational G-20 chair for a year on Thursday, the same day that it also took the month-long Presidency of the UN Security Council, which will also be the last month of its eighth nonpermanent membership of what is really the world’s most elite club on global security issues.
“India is a strong partner of the United
States, and I look forward to supporting my friend Prime Minister Modi during India’s G20 Presidency,” President Biden wrote in a tweet. “Together we will advance sustainable and inclusive growth while tackling shared challenges like the climate, energy, and food crises,”he added. Biden’s offer of support comes at a time when India’s growing proximity to the United States is attracting unsolicited concern from Beijing and Moscow, for their separate reasons. A US Department of Defense report issued earlier this week said the Chinese government officials had specifically asked US officials “to not interfere” in China’s relationship with India.
Washington: Two Indian-Americans
- Congressman Ro Khanna and Vijaya Gadde - prominently figure in US President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden’s laptop story whose full disclosure Twitter CEO Elon Musk has announced would be released on the micro-blogging site.
Musk, the world’s richest man who purchased Twitter last month, said on Friday that he would release details about what he characterised as Twitter’s “suppression” of a controversial story done by the New York Post newspaper about Hunter Biden’s laptop that was published before the 2020 US election.
He also tweeted that it would be “awesome” and there would be a “live Q&A” on the topic. The story claimed to contain emails retrieved from a laptop belonging to Hunter. The New York Post said it learned of the emails’ existence from Trump’s ex-White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, and obtained the emails from Trump’s personal lawyer at the time Rudy Giuliani. Twitter initially limited the distribution of the story, citing concerns that it could be the result of a foreign disinformation campaign. But the social media company quickly backtracked on its response, with then-CEO Jack Dorsey calling the decision to block the link “unacceptable.”
Ro Khanna is the Democratic Congressman representing Silicon Valley in the US House of Representatives, while Vijaya Gadde, an attorney, served as general counsel and the head of legal, policy, and trust at Twitter, before she was fired by new boss and CEO Musk.
A series of tweets along with internal communications of Twitter was released by writer Matt Taibbi regarding the allegations that the social media platform during the 2020 election cycle had suppressed news and information related to the laptop of Hunter. According to the information released by Matt Taibbi, Ro Khanna appears to have questioned the decision of Twitter to restrict access to an investigative report of the New York Post newspaper on the laptop of Hunter. Mr Khanna said that such a move by Twitter seems to be a violation of the 1st Amendment principles.
“If there is a hack of classified information or other information that could expose a serious war crime and the NYT was to publish it, I think NYT should have that right.

11th Intl. Maheshwari And Rajasthani Convention Hosted In Houston
WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), will collaborate with 13 partner government agencies to deploy a Global Business Identifier (GBI) pilot program that will test the concept of a single business identifier solution to improve the US Government’s ability to efficiently identify high-risk shipments and facilitate legitimate trade. Through the GBI Evaluative Proof of Concept (EPoC), volunteers from the trade community will provide CBP with entity identifier codes, used widely in various industries, to allow more comprehensive insight into shipper, seller, and manufacturer data.
NEW YORK, NY — New York City became ever-so-slightly safer in November even as murders rose, according to newly released NYPD crime statistics. Major crimes fell 1.2 percent in November compared to the same month last year, the data shows. The main exception to this overall crime decline was seen with murders, which had increased 20 percent compared to November 2021, the statistics show. There were 30 murders last month and 25 at the same point a year ago.
But, still, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said officers and other police workers have brought about “substantial, tangible progress” toward public safety goals.
“Their work has yielded positive results, with major crime down in the month of November 2022 compared to the same period last year,” she said in a statement. Crime has been a persistent issue throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Border Patrol Agent’s Quick Actions Save Man’s Life
BELLINGHAM, WA. — A Blaine Sector
Border Patrol agent provided lifesaving medical aid over the weekend.
At approximately 5 p.m. Saturday an agent assigned to the Bellingham Station was patrolling near Squalicum Harbor when he was flagged down by a community member.
The agent immediately followed the individual across the boat launch parking lot to where a 27-year-old man was lying on the ground unconscious and surrounded by onlookers. After checking for vital signs and finding
none, the agent began cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The unconscious man quickly began to show signs of life. He was treated and transported by local Emergency Medical Services. “Border Patrol agents serve the public in many
ways while securing the nation’s borders,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Andrew K. Scharnweber. “During their patrols they are often the first on scene in emergency situations. The agent’s quick response and training proved critical to saving this man’s life.”
The men and women of the United States Border Patrol stand ready to prevent the illicit smuggling of humans, drugs, and other contraband, along the United States border. To report suspicious activity to the U.S. Border Patrol, contact Blaine Sector at 360332-9200.
The pilot seeks to modernize trade processes by evaluating unique business identifiers or a combination of identifiers to replace, at a future point, the decades-old Manufacturer/Shipper Identification (MID) number currently used to track customs information, which only includes importer name and address and is not a managed, unique identifier.
Through the pilot, industry volunteers will submit three entity identifiers to CBP – Data Universal Numbering System, Global Location Number, and Legal Entity Identifier – in addition to the MID. CBP will then evaluate the optimal combination of identifiers to capture critical data including the main legal entity, specific business locations, and supply chain roles while optimizing GBI design, usability, and scope.
The GBI EPoC offers the potential for CBP, and other U.S. partner government agencies with equities at the border, to achieve greater visibility into U.S. supply chains – enhancing CBP’s enforcement capabilities while facilitating clearance of fair and legal trade.
“The complexity of modern, global supply chains requires innovative solutions to increase transparency. Our hope for this pilot program is that it will give us a more complete picture of goods making their way into the U.S. so that we can focus enforcement efforts on high-risk shipments while ensuring the free flow of legal trade that supports our economy,” said AnnMarie R. Highsmith, Executive Assistant Commissioner, CBP Office of Trade.
“With the GBI pilot, we expect improved data quality, industry cost and time savings, streamlined supply chain tracking, and increased protection from counterfeiting –wins for both the trade community and the U.S. government.”

$100 Million Gift To NYU School Of Engineering From Indian American Couple
Indian American Chandrika Tandon, who, along with her husband, Ranjan, gifted $100 million to the school in 2015, welcomes the investment.
The investment, announced by NYU President Andrew Hamilton, is also aimed at raising the profile of New York City as a technology hub. A news release issued by the university said it has already acquired a 350,000 square foot building adjacent to Tandon School. “The purchase of the new facility will help support an ongoing $1 billion investment in Tandon to significantly advance engineering at NYU by recruiting 40 new full-time tenure track faculty, fueling groundbreaking research, and growing and modernizing its Downtown Brooklyn campus,” the release said. “The funding will fuel basic and applied research in key interdisciplinary areas of global import—secure wireless ecosystems and supply chains, health engineering, sustainable engineering, and data science to improve the human condition.”

“Army Outpost Near India, China LAC Concerning:” Raja Krishnamoorthi
WASHINGTON, DC – In response to report that the People’s Liberation Army has constructed a military outpost at Pangong Tso, a lake extending across the Line of Actual Control between the People’s Republic of China and India, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence said, “The report is another disturbing sign of Beijing’s growing regional aggression, reinforcing the need for the United States to reaffirm and strengthen joint efforts with India and other security partners.” He added, “As the Chinese Communist Party’s domestic repression, brutal persecution of Uyghurs, and online misinformation efforts continue to escalate, so too do the signs of its growing international military aggression stretching from India to the Taiwan Strait. In the face of these belligerent ambitions, it is imperative that the United States maintains and expands our security and intelligence cooperation with allies and partners to send the clear messages that the United States stands with India, Taiwan, and democracies across the region.”
NEW YORK, NY — Single in Steinway? Good luck with that — a new study found it’s much better to be Sleepless in Seattle than dating anywhere in New York City.
New York City ranked 151st out of 182 cities in WalletHub’s new “2022’s Best & Worst Cities For Singles” study.
The Big Apple’s dating scene is simply too expensive, the study found. The famously pricey city ranked dead last in terms of cost for dates — one of three factors taken into consideration by the study.
“The average date costs over $90 and 19% of people in Gen Z and 22% of millennials report going into debt for dates,” the study states. “Therefore, it certainly pays to live in a place where dating activities, such as dining out or watching a movie, are relatively cheaper.”
So, what U.S. city fared the best for single ladies and gentlemen?
Seattle, Washington, grabbed the top honor, followed by Madison, Wisconsin, and Denver, Colorado, according to the study.
The trio of cities ranked high — in the top three, in fact — when it came to “dating opportunities,” another factor measured by the study. The factor took into account each city’s share of singles, online and mobile dating opportunities, and Google search traffic for “Tinder,” according to the study’s methodology.
Blind Indian-American Professor Sued For Gender Discrimination By Columbia Business School Alumnus
NEW YORK, NY A Columbia University graduate has filed a lawsuit against professor and author Sheena Iyengar for gender discrimination.
Elizabeth Blackwell first received a job offer from Iyengar in 2017 for a research position, which she thought would prepare her for graduate school, according to court documents obtained by Washington Square News. Iyengar, who is blind and rose to fame as an expert on decision making through her TED Talks, is a Professor of Business in the Management Division at Columbia Business School.
In a lawsuit, which was filed on 1 February 2022, Blackwell claimed that when she started her job, Iyengar gave many of her research responsibilities to a male worker instead of her since “she was a ‘woman’”.
The graduate also accused the professor of “disturbing gender-based discrimination behavior and retaliation”,
after Iyengar allegedly assigned the male co-workers some of Blackwell’s duties.
Blackwell claims in the legal documents that she was given “personal and supportive” tasks, since they had been “better suited” for the “female gender”.
WSN reported that some of these responsibilities included applying Iyengar’s makeup and booking
the professor on dates at different restaurants, which Blackwell said was “extremely upsetting”.
The publication noted that when Blackwell confronted Iyengar about her job, the book author reportedly told her that she was “lucky” to have been hired. Iyengar also told the research associate that if she were a man, she “would have been out on [her] a** a long time ago”.
Per recorded conversations obtained by WSN, Iyengar told Columbia University that she was being harassed by Blackwell.
The writer said that while she wanted to support Blackwell “at every step,” there was “no fit” between their interests. She also offered to write the Columbia graduate a letter of recommendation for her next position.
Additionally, Iyengar claimed that she was the one who was being discriminated by Blackwell at their workplace.
“If there was discrimination in this office, it was, it is, the discrimination that I felt as a blind professor who was being
perpetually bullied by my employee and does not accommodate the very needs of this position,” she said.
Columbia University has launched an investigation into both Blackwell’s and Iyengar’s allegations. In January 2019, Blackwell’s contract with Columbia University was terminated due to lack of funding, even though her position was up until June of that year. To WSN, her attorney, David DeToffol, called her termination a “retaliatory” decision. During an interview, Blackwell said that it has been difficult for her to find work since leaving Columbia. She also claimed that she’s been suffering from insomnia, depression, and anxiety, which first developed when she was working for Iyengar.
“These are stories that need to be told — stories that women need to share with each other,” she said. She criticized the university, alleging that the institution disregarded most of her comments about the gender discrimination she was experiencing.

Chicago Sikh Community Serves Thanksgiving Lunch To Needy At Salvation Army
CHICAGO, IL – Members of the Sikh Religious Society of Chicago helped feed the needy visitors at the Salvation Army located at 825 Christiana Ave in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Food was packed and distributed to the families and individuals who came to pick up the food at the Salvation Army. Local members of Sikh Religious Society and Sikhs from the Chicagoland area have been doing this service since 1992. This is the first time the Salvation Army had a sit down Thanksgiving lunch after the Covid19 pandemic. People from all faiths contribute money and volunteer time and labour for serving traditional meals on Thanksgiving day. It’s an honor, duty and personal satisfaction for Sikhs to feed the needy following their scripture Guru Granth Sahib’s teachings; “Jithai Neech Samaalian, Tithai Nadar Teri Bakhsees. . . . .” “God’s grace is especially present when the poor
and the lowly are looked after.”
A person develops a sense of humility while doing service. Service is surrendering one’s ego and giving oneself to the Guru. “By doing service one loses his egoistic nature and thereby gets respect from our creator.” Giving donations from one’s earnings is another form of Sewa (service). One must share his/ her earnings with the poor and the needy people (Wand Chhaknaa). This is one of the “Three Golden Rules” of Sikhism.
“Nanak agai so milai je khate ghaale deye” . . . . . . . Guru Granth Sahib Ji (Page 472)
“Nanak Says, you get in future the reward of charity given out of your earnings, earned by hard labor.”
“Once you start doing SEWA there, you start realizing how blessed we are, who have food on table.” Many of these needy families bring their kids with them who
otherwise may have not gotten any hot traditional meals at home,” said Sarwan Singh, the coordinator of this effort.
A cargo van full of canned and other food was donated to the Salvation Army by the Sikh community members and family friends. The Salvation Army prepared hot food (turkey, mash potatoes, beans, sweet potatoes, stuffing, and bread rolls, and pumpkin pie) in their kitchen. Sikh Community members served the meals, and also collected $1400.00 and handed over the donation to Captain Nikki Hughes and Captain Corey Hughes of Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army thanked the members of Sikh Community for their contribution of the pantry food and the cash. Needy families also come during the weekdays to get food from the pantry located at the same location.

NYPD, FDNY To Involuntarily Commit More Mentally Ill New Yorkers
NEW YORK, NY— More New Yorkers who appear severely mentally ill will be involuntarily taken off the street faster and committed for their own good, Mayor Eric Adams said.
A new directive to NYPD, FDNY and other first responders will set up an expanded and expedited process for involuntarily transporting people experiencing a mental health crisis to a hospital, Adams said.
The directive clarifies that not just people who are violent, suicidal or dangerous can be sent to the hospital against their will, but also those whose mental illness creates an “inability to meet” their own basic needs, Adams said.
“It is not acceptable for us to see someone who clearly needs help and walk past,” he said.
Adams’ announcement came during an address Tuesday on what he called a city crisis: people with untreated severe mental illness who live out in the open, on streets and in subways.
But the plan to involuntarily send such people to the hospital if they appear to be having mental health problems drew sharp criticism from advocates, who argued it would violate the rights of New Yorkers who pose no imminent harm.
“The decades-old practice of sweeping deep-seated problems out of public view may play well for the politicians, but the problems will persist – for vulnerable
people in desperate need of government services and for New Yorkers,” said Donna Lieberman, executive director for the New York Civil Liberties Union, in a statement. “The Mayor’s attempt to police away homelessness and sweep individuals out of sight is a page from the failed Giuliani playbook. With no real plan for housing, services, or supports, the administration is choosing handcuffs and coercion.”
Involuntary commitments won’t help mentally ill New Yorkers, especially if they’re started by cops, said Jawanza Williams, director of organizing for VOCAL-NY.
“New Yorkers will see this plan for what it is: a draconian attempt to say the Adams’ administration is tackling a problem, while only making it worse,” Williams said in a statement.
“The lives of people dealing with mental health crises won’t be improved by forcing them into treatment, especially if it’s coming from law enforcement. All this directive will do is disappear them.”
Adams argued that hundreds of New Yorkers need intervention that sends them to the hospital against their will for necessary mental health treatment, he said.
But he said responders are often under the misunderstanding that they can only intervene if someone is violent, suicidal or present a risk of imminent harm, which he claimed is “myth.”
State health laws give the city sweeping authority to do involuntarily take people to the hospital, Adams said. He recounted recently seeing police officers in subway stations who effectively ignored people in clear need of mental health help.
“In short, we are confirming that a person’s ‘inability to meet basic needs,’ to the extent that it poses a risk of harm, is part of the standard for mental health interventions,” he said.
Lieberman said Adams’ plan plays “fast and loose” with legal rights.
“The federal and state constitutions impose strict limits on the government’s ability to detain people experiencing mental illness – limits that the Mayor’s proposed expansion is likely to violate,” she said.
Adams also pushed for an 11-point legislative agenda he’ll push Gov. Kathy Hochul to support. The agenda argues state laws should be more clear about when involuntary hospital admissions can be made, as well as stricter discharge procedures.

Diverse Clergy Rrges Dutch Bros Coffee To Stop Charging Extra For Plant-Based Milk Alternatives
Looks like there is another desi drink that has caught the fancy of the West. A few days ago, Cola giant Pepsi launched a new holiday commercial showing Lindsay Lohan mixing Pepsi with milk. Calling the new combination ‘Pilk,’ the company is also promoting the drink for Christmas and asking people to go for Pilk (Pepsi+ milk) and cookies.
While one could have passed this as another of fancy holiday drinks but this time the combination has struck a chord with the desis. Interestingly, milk with soda or doodh soda has been a popular summer drink in the subcontinent. People in the parts of Punjab province in Pakistan and some parts of India have been relishing this drink for ages now. In fact many Pakistanis say that during the Ramadan in summer months, doodh soda is a staple on their Iftar table. Many Pakistani cookbooks have the recipe of doodh soda and Punjabis both Indian and Pakistanis swear by drinking this combination at many roadside dhabas, usually made by mixing 7 Up or Sprite with milk and ice.

Dutch Bros Coffee locations reportedly charge customers 70¢ extra per coffee cup for almond, coconut, oat milk if customers choose these substitutes replacing dairy milk.
RENO, NV- A multi-faith coalition of Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish leaders is urging Dutch Bros Coffee; large drive-through coffee chain headquartered in Oregon; to immediately stop charging extra for plant-based milk alternatives; calling it “unethical” and “unfair”. Greek-Orthodox clergyman in Nevada Father Stephen R. Karcher, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, renowned Buddhist minister Reverend Matthew T. Fisher, esteemed Jewish rabbi in California-Nevada ElizaBeth Webb Beyer; in a joint statement in Nevada today; reminded Dutch Bros Coffee to follow its own commitment to “inclusion” and “people-first culture” by fixing this issue of unfairness.
A coffee company should not be in the business of taxing individuals who had chosen the plant-based lifestyle and thus dairy-milk-alternatives for dietary restrictions, ethical issues, health risk worries, environmental concerns, lactose intolerance, milk allergy, increased prostate cancer risk, unease at antibiotics-hormonespesticides, animal welfare, etc.; Karcher, Zed, Fisher, Beyer wrote. Why does Dutch Bros Coffee perpetuate such unfairness simply for its mercantile greed; Rajan Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, asks. On the other hand, Dutch Bros Coffee, which boasts of “vision of making a massive difference”, should work towards making plant-based milk alternatives more accessible to every customer by removing the surcharge barriers; Zed added.
These Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish religious leaders urged Dutch Bros Coffee Executive Chairman
Travis Boersma and CEO Joth Ricci to immediately drop this surcharge for choosing plant-based milk alternatives and not blatantly ignore the company slogan of “serving up smiles”.
Dutch Bros Coffee locations reportedly charge customers 70¢ extra per coffee cup for almond, coconut, oat milk if customers choose these substitutes replacing dairy milk.
Headquartered in Grants Pass, Oregon; Dutch Bros Coffee, launched in 1992, has reportedly 641 locations across 14 states.

Ex-Theranos president Ramesh ‘Sunny’ Balwani gets nearly 13 years in prison for fraud
Zofeen Maqsood
Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani’s journey from fame to shame seems straight out of a Bollywood plot. The shrewd Indian American entrepreneur began rather impressively like many desi visionaries in Silicon Valley. At the onset, what seemed like another spectacular tale of an Indian-origin entrepreneur creating history for generations to see in America, went bust a little too soon. The story seemed like the stuff immigrant dreams are made of – Balwani along with the founder Elizabeth Holmes take Theranos – a blood testing start-up to dizzying heights. The company valued at $9 billion during its hey days, promised various medical tests using just a few drops of blood. The exemplary idea led Theranos to raise $945 million from A-list of investors.
However, this façade began crumbling when reports began coming that the lab had actually performed only a dozen out of the hundreds of tests it offered. Not only the accuracy was questionable it came to light that Theranos was using third party devices rather than
City Of Chicago Reaches $10 Million Settlement With Uber Eats, Postmates
CHICAGO, IL — The City of Chicago has reached a $10 million settlement with Uber Technologies Inc. (UBER) stemming from the city’s investigation that Uber Eats and Postmates listed restaurants on their platforms without the consent of the restaurants.
The City of Chicago Monday said that UberEats’ and Postmates’ practices of listing Chicago restaurants on their platforms without the restaurants’ consent was in violation of the City’s emergency fee cap ordinance, and other advertising-related conduct.
“Today’s settlement reflects the City’s commitment to creating a fair and honest marketplace that protects both consumers and businesses from unlawful conduct,” said Mayor Lightfoot.
Cook County Sheriff Issues Warning About Holiday Scammers
CHICAGO, IL- The Cook County sheriff says ’tis the season for scammers and is warning of the most prevalent holiday crimes. Sheriff Tom Dart and his detectives spoke Tuesday about cyber crimes and scams before a crowd of seniors at Smith Village — a retirement community in Chicago. The sheriff’s department highlighted the use of social media and online shopping as key tools used by holiday scammers.
Dart says the majority of houses have packages delivered during the daytime when no one is home. Porch pirates are the most popular crime at this time of year, but dart also warned of scammers who knock on doors.
“Chicago’s restaurant owners and workers work diligently to build their reputations and serve our residents and visitors. That’s why our hospitality industry is so critical to our economy, and it only works when there is transparency and fair pricing. There is no room for deceptive and unfair practices.”
“We delivered on our commitment to
protect consumers and businesses,” said Kenneth J. Meyer, Commissioner, Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection. “The settlement is the result of the City acting swiftly and holding companies accountable for deceitful practices.”
“We welcome any relief provided to the independent restaurants that struggled throughout the pandemic and continue to shoulder the rising costs of doing business,” said Sam Toia, President and CEO, Illinois Restaurant Association. “No third party delivery company should be listing restaurants without their consent, and all third party companies should have been following the emergency cap imposed during the pandemic. Our restaurants will receive immediate benefit from this settlement.”

According to sources, corporate employees who will be sacked will receive a 24hour notice and severance pay per the company’s contracts.

The sacking will be carried out as Amazon over-hired during the pandemic and is now implementing cost-cutting measures. In October, Amazon forecasted a slowed-down sales growth for this year’s holiday season, which usually records the highest sales. The company had attributed this slowdown to consumers and businesses having less money to spend amid rising prices.

Gujarat Police detain TMC’s Saket Gokhale over ‘fake news’ tweet
The Gujarat Police have detained Trinamool Congress’s national spokesperson Saket Gokhale over a tweet endorsing an alleged fake news about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Morbi after a bridge collapse incident there, an official said on Tuesday.
Gokhale was apprehended from Jaipur in Rajasthan during the early hours by officials of the Ahmedabad Cyber Crime Cell, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Cyber Crime, Jitendra Yadav said.
Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad underwent a successful kidney transplant at a hospital in Singapore, his son and Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Prasad Yadav announced on Twitter on Monday.
“Papa was shifted from the operation theatre to the ICU after a successful kidney transplant operation. The donor, elder sister Rohini Acharya, and the RJD president, both are healthy. Thanks to prayers and good wishes of you all,” Tejashwi tweeted in Hindi in the afternoon.
Tejashwi also posted a video that showed Lalu being wheeled out on a bed from the operation theatre to the ICU of Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Tejashwi, his mother and former chief minister Rabri Devi, eldest sister and Rajya Sabha member Misa Bharti were present at the hospital during the surgery. RJD national general secretary and Lalu’s Man Friday Bhola Yadav was also there. They met Lalu after he regained consciousness. Misa posted a video in which Lalu is seen waving from the hospital bed. “It was a very comforting moment for us when we got permission to meet papa (Lalu) in the ICU for some time. He waved his hand to accept the good wishes of all of you (the public) and express gratitude,” Misa tweeted along with the video.
“Based on a complaint we received from a citizen, an FIR has been lodged against Gokhale for spreading fake news about the PM’s visit to Morbi. We detained him from Jaipur today morning and he is being brought here for further legal process,” Yadav said, adding a formal arrest will be made after a COVID-19 test. The FIR was registered under
Indian Penal Code Sections 465, 469, 471 (all pertaining to forgery) and 501 (printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory), police said.

“Europe’s Choices”: S Jaishankar Slams Double Standards Over Russian Oil
Europe can’t make choices to prioritise its energy needs while asking India to do something else, noted S Jaishankar.
New Delhi: India on Monday stoutly defended its import of crude oil from Russia amid the Ukraine conflict with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar asserting that New Delhi’s procurement was just one-sixth of the European purchase in the last nine months, in comments that came as a G7 price cap on Russian crude at $60 a barrel came into effect.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister also said that India, specifically Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has a key role to play in helping to end the war.
ranging talks with visiting German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock, Mr Jaishankar also noted that Europe can’t make choices to prioritise its energy needs while asking New Delhi to do something else, asserting that discussions between India and Russia to expand the trade basket started much before beginning of the Ukraine conflict. Prioritise countering terror financing: Doval
NSA Ajit Doval on Tuesday strongly pitched for giving greater priority by countries of the region to counter terror financing, saying monetary resources are the “lifeblood” of terrorism. Rivals try to flatten Narendra Modi’s G20 bubble
New Delhi: Ukraine’s Foreign Minister has hit out at India over imports of cheap Russian oil, referring to it as being ‘’morally inappropriate.’’
‘’The opportunity for India to buy Russian oil at a cheap price comes from the fact that Ukrainians are suffering from Russian aggression and dying every day,’’ said Dmytro Kuleba in an exclusive conversation with NDTV.
‘’If you benefit because of our suffering,
‘’India is a very important player in the global arena and the Prime Minister of India, with his voice, can make a change.’’
At the same time, New Delhi, he believes, needs to be direct in referring to the situation in Ukraine.
‘’We are waiting for the moment when Indian foreign policy will call spade a spade, and name the conflict - not ‘war in Ukraine’, but what it is, a ‘Russian aggression against Ukraine’,” he said.
Several Opposition parties on Monday sought to drive home the fact that G20 presidency was rotational and not the first time India had hosted an international conference of this scale, amid efforts by the ruling ecosystem to showcase it as a big achievement of the Modi government.
This fact-check was provided to the government in person by Opposition
leaders during the all-party meeting convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to brief the country’s political class about the presidency and the meetings that have been scheduled in the run-up to the summit next September. Since many of these meetings will be held in states — as is the first Sherpa meeting of India’s presidency currently on in Udaipur — the Prime Minister sought the support of all state governments in ensuring their smooth conduct and success.
In his intervention, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge referred to the NonAligned Movement Summit held in New Delhi in 1983 in which over 100 countries participated and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting a year later which saw participation from 40 countries.

World Cup 2022: England believe they can win tournament - Harry Maguire
England “really believe” they can win the World Cup, unlike in 2018, says centre-back Harry Maguire.
Gareth Southgate’s side reached the semi-finals in Russia four years ago and face world champions France in the last eight on Qatar on Saturday.
Victory would see them then take on Portugal or Morocco for a place in a first World Cup final since 1966.
After reaching the Euro 2020 final, Maguire says there has been a positive shift in the team’s mindset.
“I think that’s the one thing I’d say that’s a lot different from the 2018 squad to this squad - I think we really believe that it is possible,” said the Manchester United captain.
“I played in 2018 and we got to the semi-
final and I think a lot of the lads were happy. You were happy to be part of the semi-final.
“You know that whatever happened in that semi-final that you’d go home and be classed as a hero and everyone would be patting you on the back.
“I think now there’s a belief that we’ve got to win this tournament. It is a good

change in the mentality. “Of course, we know how tough it is going to be. I think there are probably five or six teams with the same belief.
“But in 2018, we probably weren’t one of those teams that had that belief. Now there’s five or six who have that belief and we’re one of them.”
Maguire, 29, has started every England game at the World Cup so far despite struggling for game time and form this season at club level.
His performances in Qatar have repaid the faith put in him by manager Southgate but Maguire says his selfconfidence has never wavered.
“I don’t read too much if I’m being honest,” he said. “You pick up bits and bobs and maybe my family read things more than me. I tell them to stay off , but maybe they don’t because it’s a habit for most people these days.

Doha: (IANS) A hat-trick from Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos helped Portugal to coast to an emphatic 6-1 win over Switzerland and set up a quarter-final clash with dark horses Morocco.
On Tuesday at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, the 21-year-old striker, who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting lineup, scored three decisive goals in the 17th, 51st and 67th minute to notch the first hat-trick of the tournament and to live up to the faith reposed by Portugal coach Fernando Santos. Switzerland pulled one back in the 58th minute with Manuel Akanji scoring a consolation goal.
Thereafter, Portugal brought in Ronaldo in the 73rd minute as a substitute much to the roar of the crowd but he could not add his name on the scorers list, instead it was Rafael Leao, who added a sixth one in the injury stoppage time to complete a resounding win

In a statement, the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) said India has denied the team visas for the tournament, which is taking place in the neighbouring country from December 5 to 17, Dawn reported.
In the statement issued on Tuesday, the PBCC highlighted that Pakistan had beaten current T20 world champion India five times in a row during two trination competitions in 2021 and 2022, winning both the events.
“It was highly likely that Pakistan and India would have locked horns in the final of [the] ongoing World Cup, and considering the current form of [the] Green Shirts, Pakistan had high chances to win the World Cup,” the statement said. The PBCC went on to say that as per the information available, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs had denied the players clearance on “political grounds”.
Lausanne,: (IANS) The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Tuesday discussed and gave final touches to the delivery model for the Paris 2024 Olympic boxing competition and Olympic qualifiers, opening up an increased number of qualification opportunities in comparison to Tokyo 2020.
The Executive Board of the IOC discussed the Olympic qualification system for boxing for 2024 designed by the IOC in close collaboration with boxing experts. The EB on Tuesday decided that the two extra qualification events will be held after the completion of regional competitions to give boxers another clinch to bag quota places.
The “Paris 2024 Boxing Event Regulations” for the qualification tournaments and the Olympic Games are due to be published as early as possible in 2023, the IOC said in a statement on Tuesday.

When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
When Breath Becomes Air, a unique autobiographical work by US neurosurgeon Paul Kalanithi, a terminally ill physician-turnedpatient who passed away at age 36, has received a lot of praise and favourable reviews. This has an air of haste and inevitability to it, in comparison to other works of the same genre, which lean towards relaxed reminiscences and extended contemplating. After learning that he had terminal cancer, Kalanithi’s “capacity to make lunch plans had been shot to hell,” and he discusses with readers his thoughts on life and death, on being a doctor and then a patient, and on leading a meaningful existence.

Why Nachni (ragi) rotis are good for weight loss and managing diabetes
Often the healthiest food happens to be the one we grow up with. And so it is with ragi or finger millet, which has been cultivated since 4,000 years in the southern states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Bihar up north and Maharashtra in the west. It is a sturdy crop and stays pest-free after harvesting. So it doesn’t need chemical fertilisers and pesticides, making it a safe food. It is also a cost-effective source of protein, iron, calcium and fibre and a rare source of amino acid. And although Bollywood actress Kiara Advani may have just popularised it, saying she has ragi rotis, popularly called nachni rotis, for lunch, it is the most body-friendly gift that nature has given us.
High in nutrients
Finger millet is commonly known as ragi. It is an extraordinary source of calcium (350 mg %) and potassium (410 mg % ). It is known to have several potential health benefits, some of which are attributed to its polyphenol contents. It has a carbohydrate content of 70 %, protein 8 %, crude fibre 3.4 % and mineral 2.7% that is comparable to other cereals and millets. Its crude fibre and mineral contents are markedly higher than those of wheat (1.2% fibre, 1.5% minerals) and rice (0.2% fibre, 0.6% minerals); its protein is relatively better balanced; it contains more lysine, threonine and valine than other millets. The chemical score (percentage of the most limiting amino acid compared to a standard protein like egg protein) of finger millet is about 50 which is relatively better than other millets, jowar and pearl millet.
Though low in fat content (1.3%), it is high in PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty
acids). The lower fat content could be one of the contributing factors for the extremely good shelf life of finger millet.
Good for diabetes
Research shows that ragi is a fine choice for people living with diabetes, as it is higher in fibre, minerals and amino acids than white rice. Plus, emerging research shows it may improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels. However, processed finger millet needs to be avoided. This is why. The mean value of Glycemic index [GI] of upma made from decorticated or processed finger millet (husk is removed from the grain) is high at 87, similar to the GI of white polished rice.
Ideal for weight loss
Ragi is gluten-free, so the sugar load is far less. Being rich in fibre, it takes more
time to get digested in the stomach. As a result, it keeps you fuller for a longer time. This stops the urge to consume more food, thus reducing excess calorie consumption eventually.
Best for heart health
Whole grains like finger millet are connected to lower risk of heart disease. Finger millet is full of dietary fibre, which helps control the “bad” cholesterol that can accelerate plaque build-up or atherosclerosis.
Improves gut health
The fibre in ragi can also help support your digestive health. Insoluble dietary fibre is “prebiotic,” meaning it helps support the good bacteria in your gut. Eating prebiotics like the fibre in millet can support gut health by keeping your digestive flora healthy. This, too, aids weight management.
Cut calories by 10%, take fruit & veggies to 5-7 servings: How to delay ageing because of diabetes
Okinawans eat fewer calories (much comes from sweet potatoes) and have plenty of vegetables, including bitter melon. They eat seaweed and spices, including turmeric, like in India. Interestingly, the diet contains 10 parts carbohydrates and one part protein (Okinawan ratio), unlike most of the currently trending diets.
It is reasonable to state that Indians have worse metabolism compared to many other races. Our bodies harbour inflammation (“fire within”) which corrodes the liver, arteries and kidneys. Ageing molecules are activated, which lead to the withering of organs, including the brain. Within these ageing molecules reside rogue ones, which start cancer. One or multiple diseases emerge, which further cut down life years. Diabetes is one of the most important diseases, which can decrease life. Our recent research shows that even prediabetes decreases lifespan.
How can we delay ageing?
What can we do to avoid deterioration of our cells? If we cannot entirely avoid atmospheric pollution, we should at least quit smoking, including the
company of smokers. We should eat lesser calories by about 10 per cent (that is what the Okinawa population eats). Green vegetables and fruits intake should increase to five-seven servings daily. Foods should be rich in polyphenols (berries, nuts, flaxseeds etc) and carotenoids (avocado, spinach, yellow-fleshed vegetables etc). Tree nuts, fish and Omega-3 fatty acids may help. Weight must be maintained at low normal (“lean”) with little gain over the years as age progresses. Muscles must be made strong by working on resistance exercises (with weights and elastic bands). Activity must be maintained throughout the day and not in short
bursts.
An interesting question is often asked, “If I settle in Okinawa at the age of 45, would I have a longer lifespan?” Not likely. Pure seeds (good lifestyle) to nurture cells must be sown in childhood and the legacy will be a good and long life. Another caveat is that all lifestyle measures that are so suitable to Okinawa residents may be unsuitable to us. Unlike Okinawans, who have high carbohydrate meals, Indian bodies will respond better with low carbohydrate, high protein foods. Tailoring food and exercise to different races and environment must be taken into account. What are the parameters which ensure good metabolic health and longevity?
Fasting blood sugar below 100 mg/dL, BP below 130/80 mmHg, cholesterol below 150 mg/dl, body mass index below 23, waist circumference below 80 and 90 cms in women and men, respectively, and normal-sized liver. Above all, the most important parameter is the fitness of the individual, which is measured only in laboratories. It is the sum total of nutrition, exercise, weight and robust functions of lungs and heart.
Does muscle turn into fat if I skip my exercise routine?
Why do you lose the toned look so easily?
That’s because it is a cosmetic manifestation of your workouts. And when you stop doing that, either because of a change in lifestyle or work routine, or a physical condition or illness, your body composition begins to change. With little physical activity and prompting from exercise, your muscles will shrink and lose their ability to convert fat that much rapidly. And with less calories being burnt, fat cells will start to take over. This process is usually hastened by the fact that you do not adjust your calorie intake to a more inactive lifestyle but keep eating the same as before or even more without the discipline of routine. The excess calorie load easily gets converted to body fat. A gym routine keeps your metabolism intact and once that slows down, your calorie burns are also slowing down. Then there is sugar, which gets easily absorbed by muscles and other tissues in a person practising regular exercise. When you stop, any extra sugar in the blood will add to the caloric load.
So what do you do to keep your muscle mass even when a certain situation in life makes it impossible for you to resume as active a regime? The good part is muscles have memory and can be retrained as borne out by many studies. But they have to be built up slowly and steadily. Begin with walking, pushing up the time from 15 minutes, to 30 minutes, 45 minutes, then an hour. Then maybe move to jogging and running, depending on your individual capacity. Then once the body is primed and at ease with the daily rhythm, you can move to moderate exercises.
The first rule of internalising an exercise regime is to ensure that it doesn’t seem like an extreme external imposition but something that you like and goes with the flow of your own life. There should be a feel-good air about your routines. Most recommendations by experts say that 30 minutes of a walk and moderate exercise are good enough to keep your body well-oiled. Try to factor this half-hour early morning because you will find many reasons to procrastinate later in the day. Let’s say you find it hard to get 30 minutes at a stretch, then, for regularity’s sake, try out 15-minute sets to get your energy going and burning calories.
