HiIndia Newsdesk In a huge relief to tens of thousands of Indian professionals and top American IT firms, a US court has blocked two H-1B regulations proposed by the Trump administration to restrict the ability of American companies to hire foreign employees. H-1B visas is a non-immigrant visa that allows American companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise. The US issues up to 85,000 H-1B visas each year. Usually, they're issued for three years and renewable. Most of the nearly 600,000 H-1B visa holders are from India and China. In his 23-page order on Tuesday, US District Judge Jeffrey White of Northern District of California blocked the Trump administration's recent policy that required employers to pay foreign workers on H-1B visas significantly higher wages.

It’s too much.” Sterling’s outburst of anger and frustration came amid a sustained assault on Georgia’s election process by Trump as he seeks to reverse his loss to his Democratic rival, former Vice-President Joseph R. Biden Jr. Sterling, who previously said he had received threats himself, said that threats had also been made against the wife of his superior, Brad Raffensperger, the Republican secretary of state.

Facebook sued for 'denying Ivanka Trump questioned opportunities to US workers' over inauguration funds 'misuse'

HiIndia Newsdesk The US Department of Justice has accused Facebook of discriminating against American workers by giving hiring preferences to immigrants. A lawsuit alleges the social media firm refused to recruit, consider or hire qualified and available Americans for more than 2,600 positions. Those jobs instead went to foreigners on temporary visas, the lawsuit says. Facebook disputed the allegations, but said it was co-operating with the department. The lawsuit concerns Facebook's use of temporary H-1B visas, which are often used by tech companies to bring highly skilled foreign workers to the US. In its lawsuit, filed on Thursday, the department alleged that Facebook "intentionally created a hiring system" that favoured H-1B visa holders and other temporary workers over Americans. The department said it filed the lawsuit after a two-year investigation into Facebook's hiring practices. The lawsuit seeks "back pay on behalf of US workers denied employment at Facebook" among other remedies.

However, the inaugural committee has said its finances were independently audited and none of the money was spent unlawfully.

Even after the lock out was lifted by TKM, only a few team members have reported to work, the company said.

he controversial former US National Security Advisor John Bolton is worried about Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities falling into terrorist hands as well as the country being vulnerable to a terrorist takeover. With the outgoing President Donald Trump having ordered a nearly full US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan after almost two decades in the war-torn country, in Bolton’s assessment there are clear dangers of a serious instability that could threaten not only the South Asian region but the rest of the world. In an interview with this author on behalf of the Indian American radio station Bharat FM, Bolton, who served as Trump’s top national security expert for 17 months before being acrimoniously fired in September 2019, said, “I am worried about Pakistan as well. I am worried at the terrorist level. I am worried at the level of nuclear capabilities falling into terrorist hands. I am really worried at the macro level that Pakistan remains vulnerable to a terrorist takeover of the government.” Bolton said, “There are already significant terrorist elements in parts of the Pakistani military and if you envision the absolute worst case the Pakistani Taliban or others took control of the government to see those nuclear capabilities spread by design into terrorist hands and obviously the overall risk of nuclear confrontation with India. These are dangerous times, and an unstable Afghanistan contributes to that in measurable ways.”

With a reputation of hawkishness and roots in America’s conservative Republican ideology, Bolton has since his departure from the Trump administration become a much sought-after figure in the aftermath of his huge best-seller memoir ‘The Room Where it Happened: A White House Memoir” about his tenure as Trump’s National Security Advisor. The president routinely derides him on his Twitter handle and Bolton returns fire but not in the kind of language that Trump uses. For instance, in a recent tweet the president called him a “real dope” and “one of the dumbest people in government.” He called Bolton, “A sullen, dull and quiet guy, he added nothing to National Security except, “Gee, let’s go to war.” Also, illegally released much classified Information. A real dope!” Asked how he would respond to that characterization, Bolton said it was “juvenile” of the president to use such terms but added he drew some solace from the fact that he was not the only one being so attacked. Bolton, once a US Ambassador to the United Nations despite his disdain for the international organization, said it was it was a “mistake to negotiate directly with the Taliban, at least for as long as we did without bringing the Afghan government in.” He called the Trump administration’s negotiations with the Taliban “poorly advised”. “The deal that was done with the Trump administration is coming apart right in front of us. I am worried that if the troop drawdown continues and (President-elect Joe) Biden simply acquiesces in it, that immeasurably strengthens the Taliban in Afghanistan with implications right across the border,” Bolton said.

He called for maintaining the US presence to “watch what is going on inside Iran and Pakistan, two nuclear powers or aspiring nuclear powers pose great threat to the region, to the United States and to the whole world and we are severely undermining that capability if we come down as low as Trump has proposed.” In President Trump’s proposal, the US will leave only 2500 troops in Afghanistan which Bolton said “makes no military sense.” His is by no means a very widely prevalent view in America other than inside the conservative thinking since the US has been in Afghanistan since 2001 from the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks. Despite being there for almost two decades Afghanistan remains a cauldron boiling with terrorist and Taliban bloodletting with Pakistan constantly making its presence felt there. There is a considered view among many experts that Islamabad views the control of Afghanistan as part of its strategy of achieving geostrategic depth in light of its tensions with India. In a sense Trump’s decision to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan and Iraq resonates even outside his core base, especially at a time America has been ravaged by the COVID pandemic which has not only left 272,820 Americans dead and over 13.8 million sick at the time of writing this, it has created rampant joblessness and enormous business losses. NEW TRUMP ADMINISTRATION CITIZENSHIP TEST IS MORE DIFFICULT FOR IMMIGRANTS TO PASS

he test for legal immigrants to become naturalized U.S. citizens is about to get harder. Every person who applies for citizenship after Tuesday, Dec. 1, will have to study 128 questions about American history and government instead of the previous 100 questions. They also will have to answer 12 out of 20 questions correctly to pass instead of the previous six out of 10. Passing the test is the final requirement for legal permanent residents to become full-fledged naturalized citizens, which includes voting among other rights. Legal permanent residents eligible to naturalize already typically spend months studying for the citizenship test. The revised citizenship test was announced Nov. 13 by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and, officials said, is part of a decennial update intended to ensure the test comprehensively assesses applicants’ knowledge of American history, government and civic values.

But critics say the previous exam was adequate and the revised version is part of the Trump administration’s long list of efforts to curb immigration, including legal immigration. “I think it’s unfortunate that they are making it more difficult to become a citizen of the United States,” said Ray Ybarra Maldonado, a Phoenix immigration lawyer. “The test was already difficult. It required people to learn a lot that even the average person who was born a citizen didn’t know, so to me it’s disappointing to see them put another barrier between people who are legal permanent residents and U.S. citizens.” Analysts say the longer, more difficult test will discourage legal permanent residents from applying for citizenship, and note that it comes on the heels of the Trump administration’s attempt

to significantly increase the fee for applying for naturalization. The cost for applying for citizenship was set to jump at least 80% on Oct. 2 to $1,170, or $1,160 if filed online, until a federal judge in September temporarily put the scheduled fee increases on immigration benefits on hold.

The revised test also comes on top of the Trump administration’s increased vetting of all immigrant benefit applicants. “It will probably mean that a higher number will have difficulty passing it the first time around,” said Randy Capps, director of research for U.S. programs at the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute. Applicants get a second chance to take the test if they don’t pass the first time.

In addition to making it more difficult for legal permanent residents to become citizens, the longer test will make more work for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services at a time when the agency is already under budget constraints, Capps said. The longer test means that the citizenship interview will take longer, Capps said. And because more people probably won’t pass the first time, they will have to take the test a second time, which will mean even more work for USCIS officials, Capps said. “It’s not just going to be a burden on the applicant. It’s going to be a burden on USCIS because it’s going to take more processing time,” he said. It’s possible the new Biden administration may scrap the new citizenship test and go back to the previous test, Capps said.

In simple words, immunity is our body’s natural defence system, which protects us from invasions by foreign substances. There are special mechanisms in place, which can destroy foreign substances, like bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasite; before they multiply and cause illness. The immune system is made up of special organs, cells and chemicals. The main parts of the immune system are white blood cells, antibodies, the complement system, the lymphatic system, the spleen, the thymus, the bone marrow and even the gut wall.

Betacarotene: It is converted into vitamin A in the body. It helps protect the immune system from the action of damaging free radical molecules. Vitamin A strengthens the skin inside and out, and therefore acts as a first line of defence and keep viruses and bacteria out of the body. Viruses cannot survive in a vitamin C-rich environment, making it an incredible antiviral agent. However, mega doses of vitamin C can cause diarrhoea and gastrointestinal disturbances. The US Food and Nutrition Board recommended a tolerable upper intake level (UL) for vitamin C of two grams daily. Sources: Fruits like orange, sweet lime, grapefruit, kiwi, strawberry and Indian gooseberry (amla). Guava has more vitamin C than the orange, making them excellent source of the vitamin. Vegetables such as bell pepper, cabbage, broccoli, tomato, cauliflower also contain it. Vitamin D: It enhances the function

of immune cells including macrophages and T-cells that protect your body against pathogens. Deficiency of vitamin D can increase risk of respiratory infections. Sources: Fatty fish like salmon, sardine, egg yolk, mushroom, fortified products such as cow’s milk, soy milk, cereals and orange juice. Vitamin E: It is a powerful antioxidant and can protect immune cells from oxidative damage. In vitamin E deficiency, most of the immune parameters show a downward trend, which increases the risk of infectious disease. The vaccine was 62 per cent effective when administered as two complete dosages and 90 per cent effective when given as a half dose followed by a full dose, both with a month’s gap. The clinical trial results were based on 23,000 volunteers from the UK and Brazil and the results invited significant positive response globally, considering that the world is in the race for finding a cure to the pandemic. However, on Wednesday, a statement from Oxford University confirmed that the problem of some volunteers receiving only half a dose was due to the fact that the right concentration of the vaccine was not there in some vials, as reported by the Associated Press. This manufacturing error didn’t find any mention in the earlier report by AstraZeneca, in which the efficacy of

AstraZeneca’s chief executive officer Pascal Soriot comments that the company might perform more research on their Covid-19 vaccine is a possibility, given that the earlier efficacy was declared by pooling the results obtained from two countries - the UK and Brazil. Union health minister Harsh Vardhan has reiterated that India may not require Pfizer’s vaccine against coronavirus disease (Covid-19), with other vaccine candidates being tested in the country showing promising results in safety trials so far. According to media reports, the health minister said that it did not make sense to consider the Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine as even the US regulatory authority had not yet granted approval to the vaccine. And even if the approvals are granted, the manufacturer would first attempt to cater to its local population before supplying the vaccine to other countries, he said. India has at least five vaccine candidates against Covid-19 under human trial, of which three vaccine candidates are undergoing advanced phase 2/3 clinical trials to establish safety and efficacy. The Serum Institute of India is conducting the phase 3 trial with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)

for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine candidate. The Bharat Biotech-ICMR vaccine candidate, Covaxin, has also progressed, and phase 3 trial has started. The results of its phase 2 trials are expected anytime now. Cadila Health’s vaccine candidate, ZyCovD, has also completed the phase 2 trial, and is awaiting results, even as the follow up period is nearing its end. Apart from these three, phase 2/3 trials for the Sputnik V Russian vaccine, for which India’s Dr Reddy’s labs has tied up with the Russian vaccine developers, is going to start anytime this week. Hyderabad-based Biological E’s vaccine candidate also has early phase 1/2 trials in the pipeline. The government is in talks with developers and manufacturers of all potential Covid-19 vaccine candidates for procurement of their product. According to the health minister, the government will start the immunisation process in a phased manner.

The Utah monolith has now disappeared almost as abruptly as it was discovered. The Utah Bureau of Land Management released a statement that the “illegally installed structure” had been removed from its public lands by an unknown party, likely on November 27th, after receiving national and international attention. “The BLM did not remove the structure which is considered private property,” according to the statement posted to the agency’s Facebook page. “We do not investigate crimes involving private property which are handled by the local sheriff ’s office.” The 10- to 12-foot steel object was first discovered by the Utah Department of Public Safety during a sheep-counting expedition in the Utah desert on November 18th. There was “no obvious indication” where it came from or who put it there. The agency posted photos of the monolith to Instagram and its website. Facebook News will pay UK outlets for content in 2021

Facebook will begin paying UK news publishers for some articles with the launch of Facebook News in January. The feature adds a dedicated news tab to the Facebook app, and has already launched in the United States. Facebook said it will "pay publishers for content that is not already on the platform" and prioritise original reporting. It comes after years of tension between Facebook and news publishers, who have often accused it of "stealing" content. But hundreds of UK news outlets are already signed up to deals for the new feature, Facebook said. They include publishers such as Hearst (Cosmopolitan, Elle, Esquire); the Guardian Media group; regional newspaper giant JPI Media; and the Midland News Association. Facebook said it expects more publishers to join after the launch. Facebook said its launch in the US has shown it that 95% of the traffic to Facebook News publishers through that tab, are new readers who "have not interacted with those news outlets in the past".

Indian Origin Call Center Owner Patel Sentenced 20 Year Prison for Fraud HI INDIA NEWS DESK HOUSTON, TX -

he U.S. Department of Justice Nov. 30 announced that Indian national Hitesh Patel was sentenced to 20 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release in the Southern District of Texas for his role in operating and funding India-based call centers that defrauded U.S. victims out of millions of dollars between 2013 and 2016. Patel, aka Hitesh Hinglaj, 44, of Ahmedabad, India, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge David Hittner for the charges of wire fraud conspiracy and general conspiracy to commit identification fraud, access device fraud, money laundering, and impersonation of a federal officer or employee, the release said. Patel was also ordered to pay

Patel corresponded by email and WhatsApp messaging frequently with his co-defendants to exchange credit card numbers, telephone scam scripts, and call center operations instructions. The scripts included IRS impersonation, USCIS impersonation, Canada Revenue Agency impersonation, Australian Tax Office impersonation, payday loan fraud, U.S. Government grant fraud, and debt collection fraud, according to the DoJ. A co-defendant described Patel as “the top person in India and the boss for whom most of the other defendants worked,” and the owner of multiple call centers. Another co-defendant stated that Patel was arrested in India in 2016, but then paid a bribe and was released. Additionally, Patel admitted that a reasonably foreseeable loss of more than $25 million but less than $65 million was attributable to him, based on the government’s evidence against him, the release adds. Patel was prosecuted in the United States after being extradited from Singapore in April 2019 to face charges in this large-scale telefraud and money laundering scheme. The indictment in this case, which was unsealed in October 2016, charged Patel and 60 other individuals and entities with general conspiracy, wire fraud conspiracy and money laundering conspiracy. A total of 24 domestic defendants associated with this transnational criminal scheme were previously convicted and sentenced to terms of imprisonment of up to 20 years in the Southern District of Texas, District of Arizona and Northern District of Georgia, the release said. The defendants were also ordered to pay millions of dollars in victim restitution and money judgments and to forfeit seized assets.

Massive Sinkhole Swallows SUV In New York City

A massive sinkhole opened up in New York City this Thanksgiving Day, swallowing an SUV. The vehicle, an unoccupied orange Toyota RAV4, was found nose-down in the sinkhole in Queens early on Thursday morning, reports the New York Post. Luckily, the vehicle's owner was not inside it when the sinkhole swallowed it. According to NBC News, the SUV belongs to a livery driver who is counting his blessings for escaping what could have been a dangerous accident. "I feel lucky today," said Thupten Topjy, whose shift usually begins around the time his SUV was swallowed up by the sinkhole. Shocking photos from the scene were posted on Twitter by City Councilman Robert Holden, who said that the sinkhole led to the closure of certain streets in the neighbourhood.
