The US Department of Justice has accused Walmart of helping to fuel America's opioid crisis.

In a lawsuit filed on Tuesday, prosecutors said the retail giant filled hundreds of thousands of questionable prescriptions, "knowingly" violating vetting rules. Walmart revealed in October that it had been threatened with such a suit. At the time, Walmart said the US was imposing "unworkable requirements that are not found in any law". Walmart, the world's largest retailer, operates more than 5,000 pharmacies at its stores across the US and for years has also acted as a drug distributor. According to the lawsuit, the company pressured staff to fill prescriptions as fast as possible and withheld information from pharmacists, collected by its compliance unit, which indicated such orders did not have valid medical purposes. Jeffrey Bossert Clark, acting assistant attorney general of the Department of Justice's civil division, said Walmart's actions "contributed to the epidemic of opioid abuse throughout the United States". Instead, for years, it did the opposite - filling thousands of invalid prescriptions at its pharmacies and failing to report suspicious orders of opioids and other drugs placed by those pharmacies." For example, when pharmacists reported problematic orders to the compliance unit, it did not share information about the prescribers more widely, according to the lawsuit. Walmart also did not respond to concerns from distribution staff that they did not have enough time to evaluate orders, it said.

Earlier, some hardline clerics had warned the government not to allow the construction of the temple in Islamabad. The CDA in July stopped construction of the boundary wall on the plot meant for the temple, citing legal reasons. Religious Affairs Minister Pir Noorul Haq Qadri had forwarded the matter to the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) - Pakistan’s state-run council of clerics - for its advice along with a summary for grant of Rs 100 million to the prime minister for construction of the building.

The Karnataka government Monday mandated RT-PCR testing for all passengers arriving from the United Kingdom (UK) to the state and also announced new quarantine rules for people arriving from Europe. The move comes following the detection of a new variant of coronavirus in the UK. The health department said that RT-PCR tests will also be mandated for those transiting in other airports outside the UK, from December 22.

As a precautionary measure, the state govt has mandated RT-PCR tests and quarantine for travellers from the UK, Denmark and Netherlands, the minister explained. “Travellers who have arrived in the state from these three countries in the last 14 days will also be traced in the next 24 hours and subjected to an RT-PCR test. While there is no need to panic, I urge people to follow all precautionary measures and stay safe,” the minister added.

The forest department has set up a campus in Chincholi village for housing up to 200 monkeys for a period of 10 to 15 days, after which they will be released in forest areas. Speaking to indianexpress.com, A Shankaran, the officer on special duty to the Telangana forest department, said four special enclosures are readied with a capacity for 50 monkeys each. Monkeys captured by Gram Panchayat will be sterilized and housed at the campus and later released in interior forest areas identified by the department.

In India, the pandemic, protests and political faceoffs, dominated the news space.

India-China Clash Along LAC In Ladakh In September 2020, both the houses of parliament passed the farm bills amid protests by the opposition parties and a longtime ally of the ruling party. Delhi Riots:

20 Indian soldiers were killed in action, and 76 injured, after a clash with Chinese troops that started late in the night on June 15. The violence, the first to claim lives since four Indian soldiers were killed in Arunachal Pradesh in 1975, led to a rapid escalation of tension between the two countries. There were casualties on the Chinese side as well, but the numbers have not been declared by Beijing.

Speaking on the crisis of lakhs of migrants forced to walk to their states after losing their homes and jobs in the coronavirus lockdown, Mr Gandhi said: "He says he bows before mazdoors (labourers) but when they really need him, he does nothing. While the BJP said the Congress doesn't care about the welfare of the people and has a "political agenda" in everything it does, the Congress accused the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh of being insensitive in dealing with the incident and the protests that followed.

Notable stars, a celebrities who bid Legendary actor Irrfan Khan breathed his last on April 29 in Mumbai. The actor had been unwell for a long time and a week before his demise, he was admitted to Kokilaben Hospital after being diagnosed with colon infection. Ace Bollywood actor Rishi Kap o or p ass e d away in Mumbai at the age of 67 on April 30 following a two-year-long battle with leukemia. The actor returned to India in September 2019 after reportedly undergoing treatment in the US for almost a year. In February, 2020 Rishi Kapoor was hospitalised twice due to his health issues. Wajid Khan, of composer duo Sajid-Wajid, died at the age of 42 on June 1. The news was confirmed by singer Sonu Nigam, who wrote in a social media post, “My brother Wajid left us.” Wajid's family in an official statement had said cardiac arrest was the cause of his death.

2020 took the sheen off Bollywood. Celebs were stripped of their stardom for they were just as home-quarantined as we were. They were in their PJs, just like us. The actor had become a household name with the television show Pavitra Rishta before entering Bollywood. His performance as Manav Deshmukh had touched millions of hearts. Sushant then made his debut on the big screen in 2013 with the film Kai Po Che. It was the beginning of his amazing and eventful career. He earned praise for his performance in MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Shuddh Desi Romance, and Chhichhore, among others. His demise has sparked a debate on social media about the alleged nepotism and favouritism in Bollywood and several celebrities and politicians demanding a CBI enquiry into his death Three-time National Award winner, veteran Bollywood choreographer, Saroj Khan, passed away due to cardiac arrest on July 3. TV actor Divya Bhatnagar, who was known for her role in Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai passed away, rep or te d ly fol lowing Covid-19 complications. The actor had been on ventilator support in a Mumbai hospital. Fellow actors and colleagues Devoleena Bhattacharjee and Shilpa Shirodkar were among celebs who said they were heartbroken to hear of her demise. Divya Bhatnagar was 34 years old. Known for his powerful roles and deep voice, noted Marathi and Hindi film actor Ravi Patwardhan passed away on December 6. He suffered a cardiac arrest. He was 84 years old. The 50-year-old filmmaker was undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with a chronic liver disease. On July 31, he was admitted to AIG Hospitals, Gachibowli with jaundice and abdominal distention. Kamat is known for directing Bollywood films like the Ajay Devgn-Tabu starrer Drishyam and Irrfan Khan-starrer Madaari.

Just like the title, the women and their antics are a handful. Konkona Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar play cousins who are refreshingly unsentimental and unapologetic about their desires and revel in making bewildering life choices. ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’: Be sure to put a ring on this relationship comedy about a whacky dysfunctional family. Actor Saif Ali Khan excels in his role as a reluctant dad in ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’, but the real find in this film was the spunky star Alaya F, the daughter of Pooja Bedi who makes her acting debut with this fun, family adventure. ‘Chhapaak’: Director M e g h n a G u l z a r ’s ‘C h hap aa k’ — a haunting tale of acid attack survivor Malti played brilliantly by Bollywood A-lister Deepika Padukone — operates at a visceral and an intellectual level. The drama dwells into the hate crime that’s bestial and senseless on many levels. Even though the subject is grim, Padukone and Vikrant Massey keep the tone hopeful. It explores how a man and his sister use a corrosive acid as a weapon of control and subjugation. ‘Ludo’: This witty starstudded film is a strong contender for this year’s most audacious work. With its multiple storylines, mad-hatter characters and eccentric personalities, ‘Ludo’ has enough twists and turns to keep us all entertained. The movie featuring Aditya Roy Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Sheikh and the wonderfully versatile Pankaj Tripathi is a zany caper that hits the right notes. Director Anurag Basu — known for his maverick films — is on a roll here. While it’s a tad lengthy, the jokes land and the crazy situations weirdly make sense.

‘ K a m y a a b’ : T h i s touching film is a nod to all those ‘extras’ in a movie set that are forgotten and remain on the sidelines for most of their careers. They are always in the shadows of a superstar, but these actors who do miniscule and insignificant roles in films are battling for their place in the sun. ‘Angrezi Medium’: This isn’t a flawless daughter-dad drama, but it’s late actor Irrfan Khan’s final film before h e s u c c u mb e d t o cancer and it’s only fair that it features on this list. Khan plays a doting dad from a small Indian town who goes to bizarre lengths to enrol his daughter into a university in London. His incredible acting and his faulty English makes you forget the bloated narrative of the film, directed by Homi Adjania. Like us, the director too seemed to be smitten by his lead actor and turns indulgent mid-way. But it’s a pleasure to watch Khan in his element as a sprightly sweetshop owner Champak Gasiteram from Udaipur. His selfabsorbed daughter Tarika, played achingly well by Radhika Madan, is also a spot-on. Watch this as an ode to an amazing actor who can light up the screen at any point. ‘Bulbbul’: This supernatural thriller set in 19th century Bengal is a fine example of an enchanting union between Indian folklore, mythology and fantasy. ‘Bulbbul’ draws you into the world of a child bride who’s married to a much older man (Rahul Bose) and how her life is upended within the walls of a palatial manor. The film — fuelled by good performances and sumptuous cinematography — is the cinematic equivalent of your grandmother telling you scary folk tales in your childhood steeped in myth and legend. This film is superbly crafted and has a fierce, feisty leading lady. We were hooked from the word go. ‘Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari’: This comedy, starring the talented trio Manoj Bajpayee, Fat i m a S a n a Sheikh and Diljith Dosanjh, takes a swipe at the tradition of arranged marriages in India and a family’s obsession with hunting for a ‘cultured’ and ‘refined’ bride for their eligible sons. My all-time favourite joke: “Do you know how tough it’s to find an uneducated daughter-in-law and wife these days?” remarks the movie’s matriarch played efficiently by Seema Pahwa. It’s comedy that makes you laugh at some of the archaic customs that some traditional Indians have embraced. But what makes this comedy tick is the engaging and endearing performances of the cast. Bajpayee as the wicked wedding detective/ wrecker — who is a master of disguises and is on call to find out dirt about potential suitors in an arranged marriage set-up is a hoot, while Dosanjh is adorable as a good-hearted Punjabi.

Mahesh Bhatt made a big comeback on television, backing the ambitious project Dil Jaise Dhadke… Dhadakne Do. Initially titled Jannat, the show focused on a man, who has given up worldly affairs, and promotes a young child as the return of a goddess on earth. The show only aired 38 episodes, and was brought to a halt due to the pandemic-induced lockdown. Soon, Star Plus announced that it would be cancelling the show as it had failed to garner good ratings.

A not too impressive star cast with average performance led to the show’s early exit. Even before it could complete 100 episodes, it was pulled off the air.

This reality TV show by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment captured the imagination of many people. Cheeky, loud and sufficiently dramatic, Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives saw Maheep Kapoor, Seema Khan, Neelam Kothari and Bhavana Pandey in action.

Dadi Amma… Dadi Amma Maan Jaao brought veteran actors Seema Biswas and Mohan Joshi together on screen for the first time. The Rajshri Productions’ drama wanted to bring to the fore the relationship between millennial kids and their grandparents. While the serial had good intent, given the times of fastpaced shows, there was hardly any buzz about it. After shoots were brought to a halt due to lockdown, the channel announced that it would not bring back the daily owing to its low ratings.

China to inoculate frontline workers first with Covid-19 vaccines

China will begin its Covid-19 inoculation programme by first vaccinating some key priority groups, including those involved in medical treatment and disease control, within the winter-spring period, before starting a mass roll out, the National Health Commission (NHC) said on Saturday. The vaccination programme will also cover those who plan to work or study in counties and regions with medium or high risks of exposure to the virus, Cui Gang, an official with NHC’s disease control department, told reporters.

Covaxin’s phase 1 trial result shows robust immune response

Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech on Wednesday released the results of the Phase 1 trials of its coronavirus (Covid-19) vaccine ‘Covaxin’ - which produced a robust immune response against the disease and showed that the majority of the adverse events were mild and got resolved. The vaccine is being stored between 2-8 degrees Celsius and further efficacy trials are underway. The results of the first phase of Covaxin- which Bharat Biotech is developing in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) comes a day after the Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) had said that it was examining the application submitted by the company seeking emergency use authorisation of its vaccine.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Conduct UK-NY Flight Passengers Coronavirus Screenings

HI INDIA NEWS DESK NEW YORK, NY- Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged three airlines that fly between UK and JFK Airport to voluntarily start screening passengers for COVID-19 amid the development of a new, highly-contagious virus strain.

The discovery of the UK strain prompted 120 countries — but not the U.S. — to institute bans and other restrictions on British travel. Cuomo on Monday repeated his past call for federal authorities to enact a UK travel ban or, at least, require travelers from Britain to pass COVID-19 tests. He said New York officials like himself are limited in what they can do, so he appealed directly to British Airways, Delta and Virgin Atlantic and asked for them to voluntarily add the state to the list of 120 countries requiring tests. New York isn’t a country, he acknowledged. “But as governor of New York State I have asked them to do that,” he said. “We do have a public health emergency in existence in New York State. The British Airways, I have spoken to myself and they have voluntarily agreed to add New York to the 120 countries that will do pre-boarding testing.”

British Airways will begin those tests on Tuesday, Cuomo said. He later said Delta officials agreed to do so as well. The three airlines combined bring in thousands of passengers a day from the UK to JFK Airport. Cuomo said it could turn into the landing point for a true second wave of coronavirus infections. The “second wave” in the 1918 influenza pandemic was a similarly-mutated strain of that virus, he said. He said he requested Virgin to voluntarily agree “If they do not agree voluntarily then New York State will pursue other options,” he said. “But I would not be doing my job as governor of New York if I sat here and let the federal incompetence create another emergency and disaster that cost the lives of New Yorkers. “I am only a governor but I will do anything I can and whatever I can to protect the people of the state of New York. That is my job. And I know and I believe my intuition is correct that this is another disaster waiting to happen.”

Coronavirus Rapid Tests Are ‘Far Less Sensitive’: UW Study HI INDIA NEWS DESK SEATTLE, WA — Coronavirus antigen tests can be useful at detecting certain infections, but are about 100 times less sensitive than traditional lab methods, according to new research from UW Medicine. In August, the Food and Drug

Administration granted an emergency use authorization for the BinaxNOW rapid test designed by Abbott Laboratories. Unlike PCR tests, which must be processed in a lab, the antigen tests typically return results within 15 minutes. The federal government bought 150 million of the test kits and shipped them across the country, including millions sent to Washington. While authorized use only includes people within seven days of developing symptoms, UW Medicine said some organizations, like sports

teams and nursing homes, have utilized the tests “off label.” Researchers found using the rapid tests as a screening measure for asymptomatic people was much less effective than detecting illness in those with recent symptoms, when patients are most likely to shed large amounts of the virus.“The Abbott test works surprisingly well, but it will likely miss cases from whom live virus would be detected by other methods,” said Dr. Alex Greninger, the senior author of the study. To contrast the two tests, UW

researchers compared antigen results with PCR lab results, finding the rapid tests to be far less sensitive and require a much higher level of virus present to successfully detect infection in 95 percent of cases. “Although affordable, rapid testing is critical for reducing transmission in this pandemic, it’s important to understand how these tests perform and use them appropriately,” Greninger said. “There simply aren’t enough of these tests yet to enable widespread, repeated screening of the general population.
